Apply for a job

Once you've found a job you want to apply for, click the APPLY button near the top of the job description.

Sign in to your Google Account.

When you're signed in to a Google Account while applying for a job, only data that you explicitly put into the application form is sent to Google Staffing with your application. (See also Privacy policies .)

You will be prompted to create a Careers Profile and use it to apply for jobs at Google. The Careers Profile is a central place for you to add your information, upload your resume, and is required to apply to jobs at Google.

See our  Privacy Policy  to learn more about how your Careers Profile information is used, and to request removing your information.

Once you complete your profile and begin an application, you will see the status of your application (Draft, Submitted, etc).

Once an application is in a final state for 60 days, you’ll be able to place that application in the archive.

Keep in mind

  • Resume must not be over 2 MB.
  • Education, work history, and cover letter are all optional.
  • Ensure you are signed into the correct Google account, and have not switched to a different one during the application process.

You can make changes to an application before you submit it, including loading a different resume, but you can't make changes after you submit.

  • You must wait 90 days before re-applying for the same job. However, we find that candidates reapplying for technical roles are most successful when they've added 12 - 18 months more experience.
  • You can apply to up to three jobs within a rolling 30 day window. Focus on applying to jobs that are the most suitable match for your talents by carefully reading the overview and qualification information. See My Applications to review the jobs you've already applied for.
  • Save draft applications before you complete and submit them.
  • Pre-populate information from your last-submitted application into any new applications you create.
  • Maintain a history of the jobs you applied to on the Applications tab.

When using a desktop computer, you can upload your resume and transcript either from Google Drive or from files saved to your hard drive. When using a mobile device, you can only upload these documents from Google Drive.

When you upload a resume or transcript from Google Drive, a copy of the document, separate from the original, is attached to your application. Google Staffing doesn't have access to your actual Drive file, and no additional copies of your resume or transcript appear in your Drive file list as a result of this copying process. If you change your resume after uploading it, you must upload it again to ensure that the most recent version is included in your application.

See also Upload files and folders in the Drive help center.

We know you put a ton of time and energy into applying for a job. But unfortunately, we can't provide information about the status of an application. Our recruiters carefully assess your skills and experience for the roles you apply to. If there's a potential match, a recruiter will get in touch with you directly.

Fret not! We did receive your previous application. It may not appear in your account for one of these reasons:

  • You applied before our new application system launched in November 2013.
  • You didn't sign in to your Google Account when completing your application.

Troubleshooting: Resume parsing

  • Sometimes our resume parser may not get complete or fully accurate data. If you’re missing data, we recommend filling in the missing fields manually, and double check that the fields are filled accurately and fully represent your previous experience.
  • If you receive an alert that indicates the resume upload failed, please delete the existing resume from the parsing tool and upload it again.

Smashing the paper ceiling: Why employers are dropping college degree requirements

It’s a commonly held assumption that education holds the key to future prosperity and financial security.

But is college now just an expensive and antiquated rite of passage for affluent Americans that doesn’t necessarily equate to gainful employment at the end of a four-year degree?

According to a recent joint report by the Burning Glass Institute and Strada Institute for the Future of Work, a college degree no longer guarantees a “college-level job”—a job that requires a four-year degree at a minimum—and only half of college graduates have managed to secure employment in a college-level job within a year of graduation.

Additionally, for those who don’t manage to secure a college-level job, they will typically earn 25 percent more than someone with no education beyond high school, leaving them on weaker financial footing thanks to student loan debt.

However, many companies have started to eschew formal education when it comes to hiring talent and are doing away with college degrees from job requirements entirely.

In 2022, General Motors announced that it was dropping the four-year degree mandate from the majority of job descriptions, as did Delta Airlines, which now does not require pilots to have a four-year degree.

This emerging shift in attitude has become particularly prevalent in the tech industry as a response to the talent shortage— a report by Korn Ferry has predicted that there could be a global talent shortage of 85.2 million people in the tech sector by 2023, leading to a loss of $8.5 trillion if the skills gap isn’t addressed.

Google, IBM, Apply and Tesla have all removed college degrees from job requirements.

Move towards skills-based hiring

As a result, skills-based hiring is now a major focus.

“Accessing any talent pool that is traditionally overlooked is essential to the tech industry growing and prospering,” suggests Julian Nicks, CEO of LaunchCode, a tech training platform that offers free part-time and full-time courses to help those without a college degree or access to further education upskilling, so that they can access a career in tech.

This alternative pathway is also proving to be more equitable for women who want to break into tech, where only 27 percent of all positions are currently held by women.

“The reality is the demand for tech workers is growing faster than the traditional college pipeline, so it has been imperative that employers look for talent elsewhere. The way people learn tech skills has also evolved – more and more developers are self-taught or learned through accelerated, alternative skilling programs like LaunchCode.

“Our employer partners often prefer our ‘nontraditional’ candidates because they outperform their college degree peers. They bring more life and transferable skills such as direct industry context, customer-centricity or service mindset, passion for learning, higher adaptability to change, and more resilience in difficult situations.”
