One of the most impressive things that real experts do is to communicate complex ideas in a clear way for their readers. Gary Thomas’ book has been doing this for university students over many years. It is deservedly a classic textbook, which is now in its 4th edition - a further mark of success!

Gary Thomas writes clearly and it is understood by undergraduates - and indeed this book is also useful for post-graduate students. I will certainly recommend this book and I will ask the library to keep several up to date copies too.

Easy to read. Simple structure. Accessible language and very informative. Can guide students through the research process.

Great resources. Comprehensive and easy to follow.

a wonderfully comprehensive resource written in simple and accessible style, particularly helpful to international students. I love the interactivity resources, they add value to my teaching

This appears an excellent book and one I will be suggesting to future students as an easy yet robust text to assist them in their research journey

Thomas provides a clear, comprehensive text that is useful at a range of levels of study.

This is really an amazing book and really easy to follow. Students will love it.

I have used previous editions of this book. and always found it beneficial. Love this updated version. It is easy to use and understand for UG students yet it is still comprehensive.

This is an excellent book and fantastic for doing a research project. The only reason it is not adopted is because for this module the students do a scoping review rather than empirical research.

  • Additional advice on concluding, writing, and presenting research, using social media and digital methods, and understanding how to effectively work with supervisors
  • Supported by an interactive website featuring worksheets, videos, SAGE Journal articles, and more

Your Research Project

Your Research Project Designing, Planning, and Getting Started

  • Nicholas Walliman - Oxford Brookes University, UK
  • Description

With a calming, reassuring tone, Nicholas Walliman gives you the ability and confidence to plan, design, and prepare for your research project.  The new edition of this bestselling book will help you:

- Explain research theory within the context of your own project

- Curate, structure, and format your literature review

- Anticipate the challenges of social media and web-based research

- Apply ‘how to’ tips quickly to your own research planning and design

- Monitor your progress in the field with checklists

- Develop writing habits to use as a springboard for dissertations, reports, and articles

- Build a foundation of practical, general research skills like time management, organization, and critical thinking to carry you beyond your project.

New to the 4th Edition :

- New step-by-step chapter on how to write a successful research proposal  - New chapter  'Writing Strategies ' offers guidelines for different assignments to help carry students beyond their research proposal - More ‘How To’ examples of literature reviews, proposals and ethics applications - Expanded coverage of literature review strategies - more emphasis on accessing on-line resources and use of the internet - Enhanced checklists of issues for consideration or tasks students should undertake in order to progress their work - More information surrounding online and social media research and implications on information sourcing, ethics, and methods  - Increased coverage of the research methods section to include more practical support and additional information on mixed-methods  - Further stresses the importance of avoiding plagiarism with an expanded section on this topic.

I found this source too convoluted and complicated for a second year undergraduate unit. I think this is best suited to PhD studies.

A really helpful book for our Level 3 and HE students who have to undertake a Research project as part of their final year.

It continues to provide a clear overview of the research process.

Offers an alternate perspectives compared with other 'how to' texts.

It is a useful resource with a good structure that matches very well the process of empirical research and writing a dissertation.

Really useful for final year dissertation students and PGRs as a grounding text

This book is a useful guide for students approaching their first university research project. The sections are well designed so that students (and lecturer) can access the info relevant to them. The examples and writing style make the book enjoyable.

a well written and readable text which will appeal to students from many disciplines.

Didn't think it worked with what the students are expected to do on the course. However, have suggested it to colleagues on other course where it may be more applicable.

A clear, straightforward guide for undergraduates embarking on their first research project
