They can visually see what is in the bag and dispensing instructions and times are clearly visible inside of the bag. They can quickly determine if refills are needed as well. They also state that the name card on the outside allows them to clearly identify which bag is for each student.
Made of durable poly/cotton Laminated material, the book and homework pouch measures 10.5"W x 16"H (includes handle) with a 2" diameter gusset to hold more books and folders. The sides are double stitched with non-rip seams. Take Home Book Bags – The Organization
Take Home Book Bags are one of my favorite alternatives to homework for my second graders. They give my students the opportunity to read at home if they don’t have access to books, but also involves their families in the reading process. To learn more about the what and why of Take Home Book Bags, check out this post .
Today, I want to share with you how I organize my Take Home Book Bags and what the check-out process looks like. Once you get into a routine, it is so easy!
Check-Out My students check-out Take Home Book Bags once a week. I don’t know about you, but in my classroom, Mondays and Fridays were typically very busy days. So the students check out their book bag on Thursday and return them on Tuesday. That gave me a day in between to make sure the bags were in order. It also gave the students an extra day to return their bag if they forgot. The check-in/check-out process only takes about 8 minutes and I usually do this during Morning Work time.
To check books out, I randomly call students up to the Check-Out pocket chart. I hand them a card with their class number on it. They place their number next to the book bag label that they want to check out that week. They know that only one number can go next to each label. If another student had already checked it out, they can’t choose that one. I encourage them to choose a new book each week, so that all students can have a turn reading each one.
I have a checklist of all the students and bag names. When they check out a bag, I put a circle on the chart. Once they return the bag, a checkmark goes in the circle. This list makes it easy to see which bags are out and which students have them. Students are only allowed to have one book bag out at a time. They are not allowed to choose another one until their current bag has been returned.
Bag Storage I store the Take Home Book Bags on a shelf in my classroom. They easily stand up and students are able to quickly search for the bag that they want. I also place the check-out chart right next to the shelf so that everything is together. This makes the process so much easier and quicker!
Material Storage I store extra copies of game pieces and worksheets in a file box.

At-Home Book Bags
Filling Our Book Bags
- Every student gets a plastic, gallon bag. (this way when bags get torn/dragged through mud/lost), it truly doesn’t matter. I just grab another gallon bag.
- Add this blurb to the front. Cover with clear packing tape to secure.
- Spread high-interest books from Half-Price Books, Scholastic, Good Will, or Chickfila on the ground.
- Have students sit around the perimeter of the carpet or area where the books are spread.
- Call on groups of students to fill (pick a nonfiction/fiction book you want to read, a book that looks funny, a book an adult in your house would want to read, a book you could read by yourself etc.)for a total of 4-6 bookish.
- Put book bags in backpack and let families read.
- Each Friday morning (6:30 AM) send a Remind text to encourage the return of the bags.
- Children set bags on their table when they get to school.
- Play “Musical Book Bag” to get new books bags each week. To play Musical Book Bag, students stand around the tables (with book bags on the table) and cake-walk it until the music stops.
- Once a month, return to Step 2 and resort/pick books.
- Boom. Done. It’s a simple, no-stress way to make sure students have lots of books to read. The books are books students wants to read and can be read by themselves, with an adult, before school, or even with a friend.

I so appreciate your posts! I also send books home every week. I include a couple reading strategy bookmarks in a plastic envelope for parents to use with their child. I think it’s one of the best routines I do in terms of supporting reading development, love of reading and also a positive relationship between my students, their families and me. My students bring their book “envelope” back every Friday. During guided reading, I call them individually to bring their books to me. They select one to read (a few lines/paragraphs/pages depending on the amount of text) and we have a quick comprehension talk about the book or I teach/review a quick strategy. I take a brief note about successes and struggles on a recording sheet as the student heads to the book boxes to select a couple leveled books and “free reading” books to refill their envelope. Their job is to read, read, read throughout the week and bring them back the following Friday. It’s the best part of my week!

I am always looking for cheap books. I haven’t been very pleased with Scholastics books for a dollar. The ones that are 25 for $25. They seem to be ones that aren’t very popular. I had found a link that had cheap books but when they came, they were used and some were old. Any suggestions?

Hey Michelle! It’s definitely a catalog-by-catalog roulette. Sometimes the books are awesome and sometimes, not so much. Typically in November/December and April/May I have the best luck!

Love your suggestions and we are looking to implement at home book bags next year. Thank you!

Hi, I read your blog about at home book bags and I love the idea of students picking out the books but how do you differentiate the bags when you play musical book bags?
February 9, 2020 at 4:26 am
Hey Vicki! Honestly, these bags aren’t differentiated. Just full of lots of awesome, fun books!

Hi! I am loving this idea. I’m new to primary after years of upper elementary and I have not yet been able to find a system that is quick and efficient! This sounds like a win for all invovled. I also love the unhomework calendar idea -just awesome! I’m curious, do you have students and/or parents log in any manner what they were able to read that week? As a bit of an accountability tool? My gut is saying no with this method, but checking in on this! Thanks so much.

I am so excited to implement this book bag program in my 1st grade classroom! This is my first year teaching 1st grade and the thought of a book bag program freaked me out. Haha! I guess I just didn’t know where to start and the whole thing overwhelmed me. I love that this is such a simple and easy routine that will allow students to fall in love with reading!! This routine makes reading fun rather than a chore. No more book bag programs that feel like homework!

The Moscow Free Library and Reading Room opened in March of 1901 in one room of the Brown Building in downtown Moscow. The library was open two afternoons and two evenings a week and was operated by the Pleiades Club and the Moscow Historical Club. In 1903 members of the two clubs formed a committee to secure funding for a library building from the Andrew Carnegie Library Endowment. The Endowment granted the group $10,000. In 1904 Moscow residents approved a special tax to raise money for the building’s operation. A lot was purchased on the corner of Second and Jefferson Streets and Boise architect Watson Vernon was hired to design the library in the Mission Revival style, unique for northern Idaho. The building was completed in 1906 for just under $9,500, making it one of the last Carnegie libraries funded. The first major building improvement was made in 1931 with an addition that doubled the available space. In 1938 the front steps were rebuilt, replacing the curved stairs which had been a feature of the original architecture. In 1964 the basement was remodeled into a children’s library. Construction started in August 1982 to remodel and add to the original Carnegie building. In April 1983 the building was opened to the public, with the Carol Ryrie Brink Reading Room in the historic Carnegie building designated a special place for the children of the community. This addition more than doubled the space again. The Moscow branch serves as headquarters of the Latah County Library District, housing the administrative, adult services, youth services, access services and technical services departments. The Moscow Carnegie Library was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. More information about the library may be found on the Society of Architectural Historians’ “Archipedia” website.

First destination, of course - Red Square, which plays important role in the history of Russia. The buildings surrounding the Square are all significant in some respect. Lenin's Mausoleum, for example, contains the embalmed body of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, the founder of the Soviet Union. Nearby there is brightly domed Kremlin and the palaces and cathedrals of the Saint Basil's Cathedral, and one of the oldest and authentic Russian Market called GUM.
What to do in Moscow
There are plenty of activities for all ages that you can do in this beautiful city. If you like Art and History, you are in the right city. One of the most notable art museums in Moscow is the Tretyakov Gallery. It is one of the biggest Museums in Russia and contains both permanent and temporary exhibitions. Other great Museums options: Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, The State Historical Museum of Russia, and the Polytechnical Museum. Also, Moscow is the heart of the Russian performing arts, including ballet and circus. So if you are traveling with kids go visit Moscow Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard and in the evening you can enjoy the Bolshoi Theatre.
