Allah tells us in the Quran:

“Muhammad is not the father of [any] one of your men, but [he is] the Messenger of Allah and Seal (last) of the prophets. And Allah is over all things, Knowing.” [Quran 33:40 ]

From the hadith Abu Huraira r.a. narrated:

My similitude to other prophets before me is of a man who built a house complete, except for a missing corner brick. people go about it and wonder at its beauty. They say: ‘Would that this brick be put in its place!’ So I am that brick, and I am the last of the Prophets.

The Role of the Prophets

Allah tells us in the Quran:  

“Get you down all from here; and if, as is sure, there comes to you Guidance from me, whoever follows My guidance, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve .”  [Quran 2:38 ]

In this last passage, Allah is sending Adam and Eve (Hawaa) and Shaitan to earth. At the same time, He is promising He will send Guidance (in the form of revelation to His chosen Prophets). All the Prophets came with a similar message, in essence, Believe in One God and follow my example. Muslims believe in all the Prophets of God, those we know and those we don’t know. As we saw in the first two references, the line of Prophets culminated with Muhammad pbuh.

But, the Quran also tells us:

“…. Today, I have perfected your religion for you, and have completed My blessing upon you, and chosen Islam as your Dīn (way of life) ….” 

Here, Allah is telling us; the religion (revelation) is complete and perfect. This means, no addition and no subtraction, It is final. Therefore, the revelation will come to an end with the demise of the Last Prophet – Muhammad pbuh.

The first two quotations substantiate this. 

”There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.” [Quran 33:21]

Muslims believe that the Guidance as to how we should live our lives is in the Book of Guidance – The Quran. As we can see from the hadith, the life of Muhammad pbuh was the Quran lived in practice. It is the example we should all follow.

In this day and age, we have role models. For a Muslim, the best role model is Prophet Muhammad pbuh. We know how he spent his day, and the prayers he said. How he maintained contact with Allah at all times. When he rose in the morning, he remembered Allah. Before and after eating, sleeping, leaving the house, and even before doing any action he would remember Allah. This, was because all his actions were according to good intentions. If he did make a minor mistake, this was corrected by Allah. This, by itself, confirms that all his other actions were acceptable. 

The sunnah (the practice of the Prophet pbuh) is second only to the Quran in significance for a Muslim. The term sunnah as used in the hadith of the Prophet, and the words of the Companions and followers of the Prophet, indicates collective deeds. It involves every part of life; such as faith, worship, morality, and ethics.

May we learn to understand the Quran and iterate its teachings into our lives, following the practice of our beloved prophet pbuh, Ameen.

The Significance of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

After writing the title of this post, I had to sit back and take a deep breath. How can I begin to explain the significance Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has in my life? Muslims everywhere look to him as their role model, the exemplar Muslim, the best of all creation, and a mercy to mankind. We have numerous narrations from his life passed down from generation to generation. These narrations not only discuss issues of practice, but also illustrate his beautiful character—a character that Muslims all around the world try to embody.

A Model of Undivided Attention and Genuine Connection

The Prophet (peace be upon him) played with children and respected women. He walked with his head down out of humbleness and embodied ultimate trust in God. His companions said his face was more radiant than the full moon [Shamaa’il]. He gave people his full attention when speaking with them. He turned his whole body toward them, and made each person feel like his best friend. Imagine that today. The Prophet (peace be upon him) would be that person who never pulled his phone out during dinner. He would never let a text message interrupt his conversation with another person. We all know this is a characteristic that is admired in another human being, to give someone undivided attention, and yet we allow our minds to remain very fragmented.

The Story of Ta’if

I remember one evening many years ago, my aunt gathered my cousins and I in her living room. We were told prior to the gathering to prepare something about the Prophet (peace be upon him) and be ready to share what we learned with one another. During my research, I came across the story of Ta’if, and it brought tears to my eyes and sent a chill down my spine.

Ta’if was a town near where the Prophet (peace be upon him) lived. He traveled there to spread the message of Islam after suffering the loss of his beloved wife and uncle. But upon his arrival to the town, he was treated with the utmost disrespect. He was kicked out. In addition to verbal abuse, he was subject to physical violence at the hands of people throwing so many stones at him that his body bled. After coming to a safe place, he stopped and prayed to God. Instead of ranting about the difficulties he faced, the Prophet (peace be upon him) complained of his own weakness to God, as if there was something lacking within him that caused the people of Ta’if to react in such a way. He was afraid that maybe God was displeased with him. On the contrary, God sent angels to the Prophet (peace be upon him) who offered to destroy the town of Ta’if for the grief and pain its people inflicted. However, the Prophet (peace be upon him) declined this offer out of his mercy, that perhaps their offspring would accept Islam. Now 1400 years later, the people of Ta’if are all Muslim.

Choosing Peace Over Revenge

The character of the Prophet (peace be upon him) shone through with such brightness in that moment. He essentially received a green light from God to allow the angels to destroy the town of Ta’if and everything it contained. But out of his pureness, mercy, and forgiveness, the Prophet (peace be upon him) chose peace over revenge. This is no easy task. Remember this was one of the lowest times of the Prophet (peace be upon him)’s life. He had recently lost his wife, Khadija, the mother of all his children and the woman who supported him after he received the first revelation. He also lost his uncle, Abu Talib, the one who protected him from his enemies in Makkah. While still mourning the passing of these very important pillars in his life, he went to Ta’if and there endured even more pain. Those people kicked him when he was already down. So many of us would have reacted in the opposite way of the Prophet (peace be upon him). We would perhaps complain to God, ask “why me?” and most likely say many horrible things about the people who mistreated us. The Prophet (peace be upon him) instead looked inward, questioned if there was anything he could do better, and gave those people a second chance.

The Paragon of Love and Compassion

This sacrifice of the Prophet (peace be upon him) allowed for the spreading of Islam. He will be the only one on the Day of Judgment concerned for people other than himself, just as he was after leaving Ta’if. He loves and cares for the wellbeing of people without having ever met them. This is but one story that comes to my mind when thinking about the beautiful character of my Prophet (peace be upon him), but books can be and have been written about him and his life, his traits, and mannerisms. For Muslims everywhere, he is the most interesting and most influential man in the world. May blessings and peace be upon the Beloved Messenger of God.

Essay on The Holy Prophet, Hazrat Muhammad (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم)

Our Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) was born in Makkah in the famous tribe of Quraish. His father, Abdullah died before his birth. So his mother, Amna Bibi looked after him. But she also died when he was only six years old. New, his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib took charge of him, but he did not live long. Finally, his uncle, Abu Talib looked after him and never left him alone in any hardship.

Our Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) married Khadija, a wealthy lady of Makkah when he was twenty-five years old. Hazrat Khadija handed over all her wealth to our Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) to spend for good and noble purposes. He helped the poor and needy. When our Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) reached the age of forty he was commanded by Allah, the Almighty to preach Islam. Our Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) started preaching that there is no God but Allah who is the creator of the universe and to whom all human beings would return.

The people of Makkah accepted Islam very slowly. In the beginning, only a few people accepted the new religion. The Makkans indeed became the sworn enemy of the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) and his follower. They created all sort of troubles for the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) but he stood firm. At last, they planned to kill the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) and he was compelled to leave for Medina where he was accorded a warm welcome by his followers. But the infidels did not allow him to live even there in peace. They fought several battles in order to wipe out the followers of Islam. However, Allah granted strength to our Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) to defeat them and come out successful in his mission.

After ten years stay in Medinah, the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) came back to Makkah with ten thousand of his followers and conquered Makkah. On the day of his conquest, he could severely punish those who caused so much trouble and planned to kill him, but he excused everybody. After that, the new religion prospered by leaps and bounds.

Our Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) returned to his Creator at the age of sixty-three. He left for his followers the Holy Quran and the Sunnah.

Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) is a role model – in character, virtues and personality – for whole mankind. He was a great motivator, teacher and orator.

He knew how to address the hearts. He would inspire his followers to listen to his message . in order to maximize the effects of his message that could permanently transform the behavior of people , he used a type of speech that made his followers think .

Here are some of the key features of his teaching methods:

Use of Analogies: Prophet (PBUH) would use analogies to explain a topic verbally, and to enhance the imagination and curiosity of the listeners . For example, once he asked his companions, “What would be the condition of someone who has a river at his door and every day, five times a day, he comes out and he takes a bath in that river? At the end of the day would he have any dirt on his body?” They responded, “There would be no dirt on him, O Rasul Allah.” Then the Prophet said, ” five prayers are like that, they cleanse a person and wipe out the sins.”

Use of Drawings : Prophet (PBUH ) also made use of drawings and graphs for illustration . In this context, the Prophet once drew a straight line through the sand and then lines to the right and lines to the left of the first line. Then, while the people were looking attentively at the drawing, he recited the Quranic verse “And verily, this is My Straight Path, so follow it, and follow not (other) paths, for they will separate you away from His Path” ( Quran; 6:153 )

Use of Hands : Prophet illustrated his point using his hand as once he said, “I and the one who takes care of the orphans will be in paradise, like this (as he was speaking, he interlaced his fingers).”

Q and A session : Question-answer method stands out as his most used teaching method. He would sometimes ask questions randomly to the companions in order to keep their curiosity about learning alive, provide mental alertness and enhance better learning. Once he asked the companions; according to you who is the most strong person? They replied one who can wrestle down others? Prophet (PBUH) said No, most strong person is the one who can control his anger.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraged the companions to ask questions too and they would often ask questions to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) about various subjects that they wanted to learn. One day, Abdullah bin Amr came to the messenger of Allah and asked “Is it vanity if I wear a nice cloth?” The Prophet answered, “No.” then Abdullah said “Okay” and asked “Is it vanity if I cook and invite people?” the messenger of Allah answered, “No.” “So, what is vanity?” asked Abdullah. The messenger of Allah said: “Vanity is underestimating the right and looking down on people” (Hadislerle Islam, Vol. 3, 2014: 520). When a companions asked to the Prophet “Whom should I do favour?” the Prophet answered “Do firstly your mother, then your father favour.”

“One day, people asked to the beloved Prophet “Oh, the messenger of Allah, which of the believers is more virtuous?” Beloved Prophet replied, “The one from whom the Muslims are safe from the harm of his/her tongue and hand”. Asking and seeking questions is the best way to clear doubts and enhance better learning. It enriches understanding and provides food to thought.

Teaching People According to Their Nature and Ability : It was also part of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) wise method to teach people on the basis of their level of intellect and understanding and in a way that suited their psycho-emotional faculties, their nature, and their customs; and would impart his message with a spirit of tolerance and ease. He would use with each group the discourse that suited them, and address them in their own language. The Prophet (PBUH) used to bring himself down to the level of those whom he was talking to. It was narrated by Umar ibn Abu Salamah; Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said “Come near, my son, mention Allah’s name, eat with your right hand …”(Sunan Abi Dawud 3777). In every gathering prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would come up with something beneficial. His way of imparting knowledge was such that both wise and mediocre could learn something.

Effective Comparison Technique: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would often teach people by giving comparative examples for clear understanding. Once the prophet went to market with his companions. They saw a dead lamb and the prophet asked companions who would buy it for one dirham . One of the companions replied even if I will be given in free I still will not take this. This is just useless. Prophet replied same is the value of Duniya in comparison to Akhirah. This world is more insignificant in the eyes of Allah than it (dead lamb) is in your eyes

Criticize the behaviour not the agent : The prophet made people realize that what is wrong is the behaviour, and he never insulted or scolded people. He did not criticize the person, but rather the faulty action and he always did this correction in the best of ways. Educationalists and psychologists say that for sustainable long-term education, a stable and uncritical relationship between teacher and learner is a must. Artful criticism aims at correction and learning not in personal attack and demoralizing.

Repetition: Prophet (PBUH) would often repeat his lesson three times to the same people so that they can understand and retain well. Once a companion requested prophet to show him how to perform ablution? The prophet performed ablution three times so that the companion could retain it well.

Learning by doing: P rophet Muhammad (PBUH) would perform the actions in front of companions so that there remains no discrepancy between words and actions. From performing ablution to offering namaz, to skinning an animal, to wearing Ihram; everything was shown in a hands on training approach.

Exhaustive learning: Prophet Muhammad(SAW) as a messenger and teacher would impart knowledge about each and every aspect of life. He would shed light even on the most private and personal aspects of life without inhibition so as to save people from hellfire.

Home message: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was the best of teachers. His teaching strategy was so modern, applied, and appealing that it would engage all senses. He would make use of analogy, question-answer method, and experiential learning. He was an empathetic teacher and an epitome of virtues. He would never teach anything that he didn’t follow. Words and actions were in complete consonance. He was an effective communicator and a great motivational speaker. All the 7 Cs of effective communication: Clarity, Correctness, Conciseness, Courtesy, Concreteness, Consideration and Completeness were there in him. If we reflect on the way our prophet would teach his companions we will surely learn the art of effective teaching. As role models in teaching we usually quote Aristotle, John Dewey, Piaget, Berkley and Rortey etc., but we overlook the teaching-learning methods of our beloved prophet who is a great role model for all.

Honesty and Integrity:

Throughout his life, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ exemplified honesty and integrity in his actions and words. He was known as “Al-Amin” (the trustworthy) among his people, and even before his prophethood, he was known for his honesty and fairness in business dealings.

Justice and Fairness:

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ upheld justice and fairness in all aspects of life. He treated everyone with equal respect and ensured that justice was served, even when it meant going against the interests of powerful individuals.

Humility and Modesty:

Despite his profound wisdom and status as a prophet, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remained humble and approachable. He did not seek worldly riches or status and lived a simple and modest life.

Patience and Perseverance:

Throughout his mission as a prophet, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ faced numerous challenges and hardships. However, he demonstrated immense patience and perseverance in spreading the message of Islam, never giving up despite the obstacles he encountered.

Forgiveness and Tolerance:

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ forgave even his harshest critics and enemies. He emphasized the importance of forgiveness and encouraged Muslims to be tolerant and understanding towards others.

Love for Learning and Knowledge:

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the value of seeking knowledge and learning throughout life. His love for knowledge and education set an example for Muslims to prioritize education and continuous learning.

Conclusion:

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remains an exceptional role model for all of humanity. His life exemplifies compassion, honesty, justice, humility, and perseverance. His teachings encourage forgiveness, tolerance, and the pursuit of knowledge. Muslims and non-Muslims alike can draw inspiration from his life and apply his teachings to become better individuals and contribute positively to society. Following in the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ leads to a path of compassion, integrity, and righteousness, making the world a better place for all.

Lessons in Leadership from the Life of the Prophet Muhammad

The Leadership of Muhammad is a new book by British management scholar John Adair that mines the life of the Prophet Muhammad to highlight his extraordinary qualities as a leader. According to Adair, success is a function of leadership, and his short work provides anyone interested in learning how to lead and motivate with a wealth of insight, according to this review by Muqtedar Khan, an associate professor of political science and international relations at the University of Delaware.

Over the years, Muslim and non-Muslim historians have written many books about Prophet Muham mad as a leader, highlighting the divinely guided qualities of his personality as the final messenger of God, according to Islamic beliefs. But in the past century or so, a modernist, rationalist school of Islamic thought has emerged, which focuses on examining Prophet Muhammad as a charismatic leader as well as being the messenger of God.

Developed by thinkers like Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and Shibli Nomani in India and Sheikh Muhammad Abduh and Rashid Rida in the Arab world, this school seeks to minimize the miraculous nature of the Prophet’s biography to explore the rationalist and humanist dimensions of his personality. Their interpretations are formed by many categories that guides modern thinking — the Prophet Muhammad as statesman, as a businessman, as a political leader and a spiritual guide.

British management scholar John Adair’s new book, The Leadership of Muhammad, joins this body of work, even though he is not a modernist Muslim. But Adair’s interpretation is different from most Muslim biographers of Prophet Muhammad in several key ways. First, Adair, who served with a Bedouin regiment in the Arab Legion, emphasizes the context in which he lived over abstract moral principle. His narrative is rich with discussions of tribal practices and the day-to-day habits and traditions that had an influence on Prophet Muhammad. If Adair’s goal is to argue that leadership styles must conform to the cultural context in which they find themselves, he succeeds. In episode after episode, he shows how Prophet Muhammad’s understanding of the tribal norms of Arabia helped him become an inspirational leader as well as an effective manager .

Leading from the Front

Adair is singular in his focus on Prophet Muhammad as a leader. Unlike other commentators, he does not aim to explain or glorify Islam and Islamic teachings, and this allows him to home in on the aspects of Prophet Muhammad’s personality and cultural context to illuminate his leadership qualities.

Metaphors, such as comparing leaders to shepherds, and adjectives like humble and courageous appear frequently throughout the book. A good shepherd guides his sheep, unites them, works for their welfare without taking advantage of them and cares for each individual. Adair sees those characteristics in the Prophet Muhammad. Not only did he care for the well-being of each and every member of his flock, he was uncompromising in his determination to protect the integrity of his mission.

Adair conveys many nuggets of wisdom about what constitutes leadership, how it can be developed and understood, using a simple narrative style to tell the story of a very special man, one who was at once a business leader, a political authority, a community activist, a social entrepreneur, a divine source and a humane role model.

Adair has strong views about what makes great leaders stand out. They lead from the front and lead by example. They must eschew arrogance, exude humility, be truthful, be prepared to share any hardship with followers, and provide both vision and dedication to achieving a task at hand. Success to Adair is a function of leadership, and Muhammad — as a prophet who transformed Arabia and much of the world with his teachings — could not have achieved success without being a good leader. This is the unstated assumption that holds the book together.

Based on that, Adair mines the life of Muhammad to highlight his extraordinary qualities as a leader and the acumen with which he deployed these attributes. One is an account of an encounter between one of his followers and the Prophet while he was drawing up the formations of Muslims before the battle of Badr, a key military victory for the fledgling religion:

As Muhammad was walking up the line straightening it with an arrow in his hand, he came to one Sawadi Ibn Ghaziya, who was standing too far out of line. "Stand in line, O Sawadi," the Prophet said, gently pricking him in the belly with his arrow. "You have hurt me, O apostle of God," Sawadi cried, with a much-exaggerated cry of pain. "God has sent you to teach us about right and justice, so please allow me to retaliate". "Take your retaliation," said Muhammad with a smile, uncovering his own belly. Sawadi kissed it and embraced him. "O Messenger of God," he said. "You see what is before us, and I may not survive the battle, and as this is my last time with you I want my skin to touch yours.’ Muhammad then blessed him. With soldiers like that you tend not to lose battles.

Elsewhere, Adair captures the love and affec tion that Prophet Muhammad’s followers showered on him. As the thinking goes, You can be appointed a commander or a manager, but you are not a leader until your appointment is ratified in the hearts and minds of those who you lead.

The Advice of Women

Adair’s book is neither a scholarly nor a systematic study of the subject. It is a short book of 117 pages, which brings insight into the decisions of the Prophet. It does have one shortcoming: The author fails to explore fully how the Prophet Muhammad respected the opinion and advice of women even while making very serious decisions. One of his anecdotes from the Prophet’s life captures this quality aptly:

After Prophet Muhammad agreed to the terms and conditions in the peace treaty imposed by the Quraysh tribe at Hudaybia, many of his companions were profoundly upset with him, since the terms were favorable to the enemy. All of his companions refused to obey a direct command of his, which was to make the sacrifices and complete some of the rituals of the Hajj. Prophet Muhammad, saddened and worried by this development, retreated to his tent where his wife Umm Salama, advised him to go back out and silently perform the very acts he had ordered. When his companions saw him lead by example, they immediately followed him and a major mutiny was averted.

At a time when the public sphere is filled with Islamophobic narratives determined to caricature the noble Prophet and demonize the Islamic faith, this cameo about his leadership lessons comes as a welcome and edifying relief.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the best role model for all humankind. Among his outstanding virtues and characteristics, he was an extraordinary husband, a perfect father, and a unique grandfather. He was also a great statesman, judge, and spiritual leader. His most distinctive quality, however, was the fact that he was a blessing to all in both word and deed. He infused justice, love, and dignity in those around him. He spread the power of brotherhood to the extent that it became exceptional in human history. Affirming that these grand virtues were bestowed on him by Allah the Almighty and that He prepared His loyal messenger to call for the true religion, is part of one’s belief. Qur’an The Qur’an describes the Prophet(PBUH)as merciful and kind to the believers. Allah the Almighty says, “There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer; [he is] concerned over you and to the believers is kind and merciful.”(Quran Surah Tawbah 9:128) “ And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.” (Quran Surah 21:107) Mercy to Kids Anas said that “Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) greeted children as he passed them, saying that he did so because he had observed the Prophet doing the same thing”. ( Bukhari and Muslim) According to Ibn `Abbas , “ the Prophet(PBUH) used to hold the first of any seasonal harvest, he used put it on his eyes then on his lips and say “Oh Allah! Like you have made us see its beginning (of the season), allow us to see its end.” Then he would give it to any child sitting around him.” (Tabarani) When his guests brought children with them, the Prophet(PBUH) called them towards him and placed them on his lap. One day an infant urinated on his clothes. He simply poured water over the area but did not wash the clothes (as the infant was only breast-fed). ( Bukhari ) Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) used to set some kids in a row and saying, “I’ll give such and such (i.e gift or so) to the one who come to me first.” So they used to race and fall on his back and chest. (Ahmad) Mercy to Women Once many women relatives of Prophet Muhammad were sitting around him and talking loudly to him. When Omar came they all left, at which the Prophet laughed. Omar said, “, who, on hearing Omar’s voice, had all hidden themselves from him. Omar, addressing them, said, “You fear me but do not fear Allah’s Messenger.” They all said, “.” (Muslim) Once the , Noble Prophet(PBUH) was sleeping with his face covered in the apartment of Aisha. It was the day of Eid (Muslim holiday) and young girls were singing. Abu Bakr entered the house and asked the girls to stop. The Prophet said, “Let them sing, it is the day of Eid for them.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 3931) He said: The most perfect Muslim in the matter of faith is one who has excellent behavior; and the best among you are those who behave best towards their wives. (Tirmidhi Vol. 1, Book 7, Hadith 1162) He said, “Whoever [brings up] two girls till they come of age, will be in the next world along with me, like my two fingers joining each other.” (Abu Dawud) He said, “A believing man should not hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another. (Muslim ,Book 1, Hadith 275) He said, “ “I start the prayers, intending to lengthen them. I then hear a child crying so I make them shorter, knowing how emotional a child’s mother gets.” ( Bukhari and Muslim) Caliph Umar(RA-the second leader after prophet Muhammad(PBUH)) wanted to limit the amount of dowry. Most Muslims agreed with him but a old poor woman declared her disagreement. Umar(RA) didn’t mute her. Instead, he heard her opinion which was proofed and then he said, “The lady is right and Umar is wrong.” Mercy to Orphans, Needy and Widows From his mercy is that he never used to disdain from walking along with a widow or with a poor person and fulfill their needs . He used to visit the weak and sick Muslims and attend their funerals . He used to treat orphans well and charitably. He used to commend people to sponsor them and treat them with excellence and he also used to announce the consequent virtues of that saying, “I and a patron of an orphanage are as close in Paradise (while waving with the index and middle finger and parting them .” He also said that the best house in Muslim houses is the one with an orphan being treated well in it. ” ( Bukhari and Ibn Majah) Ibn Omar(RA) reported Allah’s Messenger as saying, “A Muslim is a Muslim’s brother; he does not wrong him. If anyone cares for his brother’s need, Allah will take care of his need; if anyone relieves his brother’s anxiety, Allah will remove from him one of his anxieties on the Day of Resurrection; and if anyone conceals a Muslim’s secrets, Allah will conceal his secrets on the Day of Resurrection.” ( Bukhari and Muslim) Abu Hurairah(RA) reported Allah’s Messenger as saying, ‘The best house among the Muslims is one where an orphan is well treated, and the worst house among the Muslims is one where an orphan is badly treated.” (Ibn Majah) Abu Omamah (RA)reported Allah’s Messenger as saying, “If anyone caresses an orphan by moving his fingers in his hair, doing so only for God’s sake, he will have blessings for every hair over which his hand passes and if anyone treats well ail orphan girl or boy under his care, he and I shall be like these two in Paradise,” putting two of his fingers together. (Ahmad) Abu Hurairah(RA) reported Allah’s Messenger as saying, He who strives to serve a widow and a poor person is like the one who strives in Allah’s way.” He also reported that when a man complained to the Messenger of Allah of being hardhearted he said, “Show affection to the orphans and feed the poor. Mercy to Domestic Workers Once a man came to Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) and said, “O Allah’s Messenger! How many times should I forgive the mistakes of slaves?” The Noble Prophet(PBUH) kept quiet. The man repeated his question three times, and the Prophet replied at the third time, “Forgive them seventy times every day.” A man had two slaves but was not happy with them. He used to beat and abuse them but they did not change their ways. He complained to the Prophet and asked for his advice. Prophet Muhammad said that if his punishment was in proportion to their wrongs, well and good; otherwise Allah would punish him for his excess. On hearing this the man was upset and began crying. Prophet Muhammad recited from the Qur’an, “We shall set up scales of justice on the Day of Resurrection.” (Quran 21:47) and observed that the man did not read the Qur’an. After this he said, “O Allah’s Messenger, it is better that I release them from my possession. Be witness that they are now free.” Mercy to Animals Aisha(RAA) narrated that she once found difficulty in riding a horse, so she kept reining it in repeatedly. The Prophet then said, “You must have gentleness.” (Muslim) Once the Prophet(PBUH) passed by a camel that was so emaciated its back was one with its abdomen. Upon that, the Prophet(PBUH) said, “Fear Allah with regard to livestock. Ride them in a fitting way and eat them when they are in good condition.” (Abu Dawud) He once entered the garden of man from the Ansar (Muslims of Madinah) and there was a camel. When the Prophet(PBUH) saw the camel it froze and its eyes started watering. Then the Prophet of Allah came to it and rubbed its ears so it calmed down. Then the Prophet said, “Who is the owner of this camel? Whose camel is this?” A young man from the Ansar told him, ”O Messenger of Allah, it belongs to me.” Then he told him (, “Do you not fear Allah with regard to this beast which Allah has let you own? It complained to me that you starve it and tire it by overworking it and using it beyond its capacity.” (Ahmad and Abu Dawud) He saw some people sitting on animals so he commented, “Keep them safe and sound when riding them and when leaving them, don’t use them as chairs for your side talks in the streets and markets. A ridden animal might be better than its rider and might remember and mention God more than its rider does.” (Ahmad and Abu Yali) Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)once said, “A woman was doomed to enter the Fire because of a cat. She imprisoned it and neither fed it nor set it free to eat the rodents of the earth.” ( Bukhari ) Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) warned against any human being causing a bird to feel panic about its little offspring. Someone took two chicks of a bird, which came in panic searching for its chicks. Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) then asked, “Who has distressed it by taking its chicks?” Then he asked them to return the chicks. (Abu Dawud) The Prophet(PBUH) once passed by a burned out anthill. When the Prophet saw it he asked, “Who has burned it?” When he was informed of who had done it, he said, “Only the Lord of Fire has the right to punish with fire.” (Abu Dawud) The Holy Prophet(PBUH)prohibited the killing of a bird for the sake of pleasure and not for a specific beneficial need. He, “Anyone who would kill a bird, this bird would come on Doomsday and say, “God, this person killed me for pleasure and not for benefit.” (An-Nasaai) Once , Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) saw a person preparing lamb, laying it down while he was still sharpening his knife. The Prophet(PBUH) then commented, “Do you want to kill it twice? Sharpen your knife before you lay it down.” ( Bukhari and Muslim)

Leadership Qualities of the Imam: Our Prophet as a Role Model

Contemporary reality of the preaching activity requires a leading Imam who has a sharp mind, pure heart and righteous moves to lead and guide people. Our prophet (PBUH) was really a great role model in all fields including preaching and leadership. He was an insightful Imam, educator and guide to the way of Allah, who acted wisely and provided good advice deriving guidance and insight from His Lord. 

The preaching career of our prophet was characterized by notable leadership qualities. He managed to unify people and establish a great nation that had a great resonance all over the world. Leading His nation wisely has resulted in a resounding success, which drove it to gain the benefits of this world and the hereafter. After Allah’s grace and support, this huge success and excellence is attributed to leadership characteristics, in addition to kind traits and manners that qualified Him to be a paradigm and a role model of a successful wise leader who is capable of leading the nation to achieve the goals and objectives that Islam came to establish. Below are the most important leadership characteristics that distinguished our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): 

First: Forgiveness and Tolerance 

A leader needs this characteristic to succeed in leading those whom he leads to gain their loyalty. Allah the Almighty says in the Holy Qur’an (So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], You were lenient with them. And if You had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about You) (Al Imran: 159). Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was a tolerant leader who forgave and made excuses for the offenders and pardoned them. His forgiveness encompassed both enemies and friends. It was clearly manifested on the day of the conquest of Mecca when he entered the city as a victorious conqueror. On that day, the polytheists had no refuge or escape. His noble manners and goodness were manifested when he forgave and pardoned them. 

Second: Firmness 

Despite his tolerance and easiness, He was firm in making some decisions. He was not known for reversing his decisions or being lenient in implementing them when necessary. Examples of his firmness include his order to cut off the hand of a Makhzumi noble woman who had committed theft. 

Third: Taking Advice and Consultation 

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to consult His companions in important matters and accept the sound opinion and logical reasoning in public affairs that have not been decided over by a revelation from Allah. He was in the habit of doing so to accustom His companions to think about public affairs, to raise their sense of responsibility and to implement the commands of Allah ordering Prophet Muhammad to apply the mutual consultation practices. 

Fourth: Reconciling Hearts and Removing Grudges 

The successful leader needs this characteristic to unite the ranks and increase intimacy and love between people. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was a paradigm and a role model in doing so.

Fifth: Assignment of Tasks and Roles 

The successful leader should assign tasks and roles to people according to their energies, inclinations and efficiencies. One of the well-established facts in leadership is that most people do not achieve success without receiving help from others. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to assign tasks and roles to His companions according to their efficiencies and capabilities. 

Sixth: Paying Attention to People and Appreciating Them 

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to pay attention to his people and appreciate them. He was very compassionate, loving and merciful to his companions. Our prophet used to console them in times of sorrow, visit them to ask about their conditions and teach them good manners and ethics.   

Finally: Setting Priorities

Among the leadership qualities required by a leader or an Imam is the skill of setting priorities and giving attention to the most important issues, both wisely and fairly. A true leader should give priority to the public interests compared to private interests by paying attention to preventing mischiefs and favoring this over bringing benefits. This element plays a great role in achieving success, victory, and empowerment.

The purpose of this study is to closely examine the life and leadership skills of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in order to discover conflict resolution strategies adopted by the leading figure of Islam and evaluate those lessons to ascertain possible solutions to the contemporary global problems and challenges across the globe. Understanding is the catalyst for peace. This paper also aims to contribute to world peace and interfaith dialogue albeit its limited capacity in scope through the illustration of the exemplary character of this well-known persona who is not otherwise very well understood in largely the non-Muslim world but also within the Muslim world. Particular attention is paid to the identification of key attributes of a successful leader in the light of Muhammad (pbuh)'s success. A cross-examination of the evidence available to us, it is strongly noteworthy that Muhammad (pbuh) showed great respect for other faiths, cultures and ideas; even when he did not agree on certain matters, he listened and engaged with tolerance and sensitive care. His service of what he ardently believed to be the truth and his style and approach in dealing with would oppose those beliefs provides an acute insight on the character of this leading figure of Islam whose success in overcoming almost impossible barriers and conflicts at many layers of society becomes a strong case-study for modeling conflict resolutions beyond its theoretical frameworks and examine this applied science in the art of leadership and peace building. This paper would then conclude that one of the greatest legacies of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is the essential appreciation of the dignity of all living beings irrespective of their gender, race or societal status; with Muhammad's followers from diverse socio-cultural and socio-lingual backgrounds, ethnicities, civilizational development – this essential attribute becomes noteworthy to examine closely the veracity of his appreciation, respect and dignity afforded to all.

The Islamic faith is viewed by many across the world with limited understanding and the image of Muslims has been tarnished by radical members of that religion whose actions do not reflect the religion’s core beliefs. Because Muslims represent the world’s second largest religious group with more than 1.6 billion adherents, understanding the ethical principles of the Islamic faith is in the interest of others throughout the world who live, do business, and/or associate with Muslims. In this paper we examine principles of the Islamic faith, as set forth in the Qu’ran and the Sunnah, and compare them with twelve other well-recognized ethical perspectives, comparing differences and similarities. We suggest that understanding the tenets of the Islamic faith will enable others to interact more effectively with Muslims as colleagues, business associates, and community members.

This article focuses on the Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) as an exemplary model for universal peace and justice. According to the Qur’an Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) was, is and will always be a perfect role model for all of humanity. Evidence from the annals of authoritative Islamic history, Sirah works and the collections of Hadith is drawn upon in this paper to identify from the articulations and practices of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) the modus operandi for peaceful implementation of universal peace and justice in the present global scenario.

Prophet Muhammad as my Role Model

A role model is someone whose behavior, style, or accomplishments can be imitated by others, especially younger people. The term role model was coined by sociologist Robert K. Merton, who came up with the phrase during his career. Merton proposed that individuals compare themselves to reference groups of people who occupy the social role that the person aspires to. A role model could be a sports athlete, an actor, or simply a person of good character. In this essay, I want to discuss Prophet Muhammad as a role model.

Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Sallallahu-Alayhi- Wa-Salam) is my idol, and I believe he is the best role model for all humanity because of his good character. Furthermore, Prophet Muhammad was the best teacher, the best friend, the best father, the best husband, and the best protector of the needy, among others. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was compassionate and friendly, and he loved helping others. He never intentionally hurt others’ feelings and always made an effort to make others smile and assist them in their difficulties. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) possessed the best character, qualities, and morals, and I aspire to be like him.

Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH) was born in the month of Rabi-ul-Awal. He is a symbol of kindness for all humanity. While all prophets guided their people, Mohammad (PBUH) brought about a revolution in people’s lives. This revolution is unparalleled in human history. Our love for the Prophet (PBUH) entails not only devotion and admiration but also following his actions. We have no choice but to follow his teachings. The Quran and Sunnah are the foundations of our religion. The Prophet’s (PBUH) holy way of life guides us in our personal and collective lives.

Even at a young age, Prophet Muhammad showed remarkable compassion to everyone around him. Despite the absence of a consistent father figure and the numerous trials he faced in his childhood, the Prophet continued to persevere and serve those who were around him.

After the death of his grandfather, he was sent to live with his Uncle, Abu Talib. Abu Talib had many children, but he always treated Prophet Muhammad as his own and did not deprive him of what he needed. Abu Talib was known to be a generous man and would always assist the travelers when they came to make the pilgrimage.

Prophet (PBUH) was the epitome of good manners. Every action He took in life represented the highest ethics and manners that a person could exhibit. He was an ideal being in terms of manners and morals, unlike anyone the world has ever seen. “The Prophet (PBUH) did not swear at anyone, nor was He rude, nor did He curse anyone. If He desired to reprimand someone, He would say: ‘What is wrong with him, may dust be cast in his face!”

The general misconception about Islam and the Prophet (PBUH) is that they both advocate violence and are not for peace. This is completely false, as the religion Islam itself is peace, and the Prophet (PBUH) was a promoter of peace. He wanted people to live in harmony and always encouraged them to resolve their differences peacefully.

By choosing to prioritize peace and harmony instead of resorting to violence.

“Let’s go and find a resolution to the situation and bring about peace between them.”

I always strive to follow the teachings of Hazrat Muhammad (Sallallahu-Alayhi-Wa-Salam) because he is my favorite role model. I always try to speak the truth and never harm anyone with my actions. I always stand with the weak and make my best effort to help them. I always show respect and appreciation to both familiar and unfamiliar individuals. By following his example, I feel blessed.
