D.Sc. Cybersecurity Program Overview

Marymount University’s doctorate program in Cybersecurity prepares highly qualified individuals for elite careers in cybersecurity, with unique knowledge and skill sets to manage increasingly complex networks and information systems to protect the nation’s digital infrastructure and our national security.

The D.Sc. in Cybersecurity program teaches candidates higher-order thinking and diversity of thought surrounding current and future cybersecurity issues, such as exploration of new technology, the role of artificial intelligence, and research to develop expertise in an area of cybersecurity of their choice.

While available online and in person, Marymount’s Cybersecurity doctorate program takes advantage of the University’s strategic location. The national capital region is near more cybersecurity firms and related employment opportunities than anywhere else in the U.S. Here, you can find the Dept. of Homeland Security, Dept. of Defense, National Security Agency, Central Intelligence Agency, and National Science Foundation, as well as major companies such as Amazon Web Services, Capital One, Northrup Grumman, L-3, CACI, and more. Our faculty are also experts who are active in the federal government and corporate security, with experience you can’t easily find anywhere else.

Marymount’s Cybersecurity doctoral program goes beyond basic network security, recognizing an evolving field that is at the intersection of technology, management, ethics, leadership, human behavior, policy, and data science. We are a designated National Center of Academic Excellence for Cyber Defense Education (CAE/CDE) by the National Security Agency and the Dept. of Homeland Security, a distinction in the cybersecurity domain held by only select universities in the country. Marymount is also a recipient of the CyberCorps Scholarship for Service grant from the National Science Foundation, allowing us to offer scholarships to Cybersecurity students in turn for the same length of service in government cybersecurity positions.

Our goal is to share the expertise of cybersecurity professionals with students who will become the future leaders and educators in the field. We accomplish this through scholarly inquiry involving real-world situations as well as extensive research into the technological, societal, ethical, and policy domains of cybersecurity.

  • Interview is required for qualified applicants

International Students: For university coursework completed outside the U.S., a course-by-course transcript evaluation is required from a  NACES  member evaluation agency such as  World Education Services  or  Educational Credentials Evaluators .

Students for whom English is a second language must submit a recent official score of 96 from TOEFL, 6.5 from IELTS, or 58 from the PTE academic exam, or documentation of program completion at 1 of Marymount University’s language partners. IT 727: Managing Cybersecurity Risk

In general, the digital assets of modern-day organizations are susceptible to numerous threats and potential vulnerabilities — but there’s not always enough money and resources to protect them. This course covers all aspects of managing cyberattack risk and covers the foundations of developing cyber defense strategies for any organization. Also covered is the strategic decision-making process, including formal methodologies, of which assets to defend and why.

IT 757: Cyber Threat Intelligence

This course covers the cyber threat intelligence landscape, including tactical, operational, and strategic dimensions. It includes open-source, social media, and mobile app intelligence gathering techniques. Investigational strategies such as counterintelligence methods and attribution are also discussed.

IT 777: Malware Analysis

This is an advanced hands-on class that explores the roles of malware analysis, cybersecurity defenses, developing policies to handle malware, and performing dynamic and static analysis to recognize existing and potential malware. Students learn how and when to use analysis techniques to mitigate risks associated with malware.

IT 800: Beginning Applied Research in Cybersecurity

This course prepares doctoral students for the applied research process in the cybersecurity field. Students review APA guidelines and look at special requirements for academic writing. They start thinking of issues in the field that could benefit from additional research and then develop these ideas into potential dissertation topics. Students also analyze past work and consider ethical issues that might occur during their cybersecurity research.

Career and Salary Possibilities

Through the D.Sc. Cybersecurity program, we offer work opportunities and other experiential learning practicums, including a variety of paid research and teaching assignments through the CyberTeach program and publications of group research projects completed with other D.Sc. in Cybersecurity students. In addition, the Center for Career Development has experts to help with résumés, LinkedIn, and interviewing.  

The median annual salary for Computer and Information Systems Managers in 2021 was $199,010, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. During the next decade, the career outlook for cybersecurity professionals is expected to grow 33%, far above the national average.

While a bachelor's degree in Cyber Security or Computer Science is a common pathway to gain proficiency in these subjects, related fields such as electrical engineering or mathematics can also foster valuable skills. 

Although not mandatory, pursuing a degree is often advantageous, as evidenced by a survey conducted by ISC2 , an international nonprofit information security organization. Their findings indicate that 31% of cybersecurity professionals possessed a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity or a closely related field upon entering the industry.

Additionally, the survey revealed that 20% of respondents obtained an advanced degree, such as a master's or Ph.D., in cybersecurity or a related field, while an additional 16% pursued advanced degrees in a field unrelated to cybersecurity.

Next, consider seeking entry-level positions in cybersecurity engineering and related fields to gain practical experience and enhance your skills. Various roles are available for newcomers to explore, including cybersecurity specialist, cybercrime analyst, incident and intrusion analyst, and cybersecurity analyst.

According to the survey, 86% of professionals value senior-level experience more than doctorate degrees, while 70% prioritize entry-level cybersecurity experience over cybersecurity bachelor's degrees, which are favored by only 30% of respondents. This highlights the importance of hands-on experience in the cybersecurity field, suggesting that employers highly value practical skills and real-world expertise.

Obtaining cybersecurity certifications can significantly enhance your competitiveness in the job market. As you pursue a career in cybersecurity engineering, consider acquiring certifications such as CompTIA's Security+ and Network+ . These certifications strengthen your résumé and fulfill the prerequisites for various positions.

For intermediate-level professionals, options like ISACA's Certified Data Privacy Solutions Engineer and the Global Information Assurance Certification certifications can further validate your expertise in specific areas. Additionally, specializing in a specific area can lead to opportunities for advancement, as employers often seek specialists to address specific cybersecurity challenges and projects.

Computer Science PhD Student First to Receive Competitive Award

BATON ROUGE, LA – LSU Computer Science Ph.D. student Ruxin Wang is the recipient of the highly competitive 2024 Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) Rising Stars Award, making her the first-ever LSU student to receive the honor. She is also the first female LSU student to publish a first-author security paper at one of the Big 4 Security conferences.

Wang will next attend the 2024 CPS Rising Stars Workshop in May at the University of Virginia. There, she will receive the award, which aims to identify and mentor outstanding Ph.D. and post-doctoral students who are interested in pursuing academic careers in CPS core research areas.

“This award recognizes my research in CPS security and using CPS to improve traffic safety and public health,” Wang said. “In addition to my research, this award also recognizes my efforts in engaging women scholars in STEM research. I greatly appreciate the help and guidance of my Ph.D. advisor, Dr. Chen Wang, who consistently encouraged me to apply for this national award and be brave enough to compete with other top-ranking university peers. I am now more determined to pursue a faculty position after graduation, and I am now more confident that I can make significant contributions to CPS research and education.”

Last May, Wang became the first female LSU student to publish a first-author security paper at a Big 4 Security conference when her paper on developing a low-effort authentication method for VR headset users was published at the 44th IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy. Existing VR authentications require users to enter a PIN number or draw graphical passwords, which can be observed by others in proximity to the user and create security issues. Wang’s proposed method would be based on the unique skull-reverberated sounds, which can be acquired when the user wears the VR device.

“It is very challenging to publish a first-author paper at a Big 4 Security conference, such as IEEE S&P, which has a low acceptance rate (e.g., 13%),” Wang said. “The review process is double-blind, and reviewers don’t know who you are…[they only have] your submitted paper to make decisions. I worked with my advisor, Dr. Wang, and my colleague, Mr. Long Huang, for over two years on the VR authentication topic, and our submission has been rejected many times. We kept researching on this area, solving challenges, and improving our paper to finally make it to the level of the Big 4 Security conferences.

“To me, it is a high recognition of my research achievements in ‘Cyber-Physical Systems for Security, Safety, and Healthcare’ at LSU and a milestone in my academic career. ‘First’ means there will be a second and a third. I am now working towards publishing the second Big 4 paper.
