When submitting your information in our cover letter generator, be sure to add experience details that help you stand out from other applicants. In this example, highlighting from the start that you already have a number of years working in a similar role in the same type of setting shows that you can handle the pressure and demands the role requires.

How do you write a cover letter?

If you have more time and are feeling up to the task, you might be interested in writing a cover letter from scratch. But maybe you’re not sure where to begin. Here are three simple steps to get started.

Research the company and position

Take some time to look into the company where you’re applying and the position you’re interested in. You can see if the company has been in the news for any achievements or read reviews that might give insight into the company culture.

Read the job description thoroughly so you understand the role. In addition to the job duties and requirements, be sure you understand the expected schedule—is it strictly work-from-home, or is it more of a hybrid model?

The more you know about the place you’re applying to and the role you want, the more personalized your content will be.

Outline your letter

The structure of your cover letter is as important as the content. There are lots of job seekers out there, so you want your cover letter to be easy to read for whoever receives it.

Here’s a sample cover letter outline to follow:

  • Greet the reader in the opening paragraph
  • Introduce yourself and why you’re writing
  • Explain your interest in the job and the company
  • Describe your relevant experience and skills
  • Thank the reader for their time and consideration
  • Sign off with a promise to follow up in the near future

Some people also include their contact information and their LinkedIn account at the end of the cover letter or in a header.

Be mindful of the tone

You want to be enthusiastic and authentic. Express your excitement about your potential move into the role you’re applying for, but don’t make any sweeping, potentially fake-sounding statements about the company.

Don’t be afraid to talk yourself up

Sure, a professional resume will have all the stats, but the cover letter is where you can shine.

Sure, your resume will show you have X amount of years in a certain position, but in the cover letter, you can go deeper. Tell a brief story about your responsibilities or explain how you made a positive impact in that role. You want your future employer to see what you’re capable of and how you can make a difference.

Cover letter support, do i need a cover letter.

Yes! A lot of job seekers wonder what is the purpose of a cover letter in 2024.

But they’re still useful. Even if it isn’t required, you should write a cover letter to expand on your resume and provide details about your background that can’t be included in a resume.

Cover letters also give you a chance to tell a story about why you’re the best choice for the position. A good cover letter can distinguish you from a crowded field and significantly increase your chance of landing an interview.

The same goes for writing a resume . Whether you’re choosing a format , creating an outline or even working on a specific section like your resume profile , every step of making a resume builds your chances of getting that fateful call for an interview.

How do I write a student cover letter?

Cover letters are even more important for students than seasoned professionals because they may not have the work experience to make a perfect resume . When you’re making a student resume , you should use your cover letter to:

  • Explain your career goals and why you’re interested in the job.
  • Highlight successful school projects that speak to your ability to do the job.
  • Touch on skills you picked up in and outside of school with extra attention given to workplace experience.

If you put a lot of care into your cover letter, you’ll have an advantage over similarly qualified applicants.

What goes in a cover letter?

When writing a cover letter, you should make sure you include the key components, such as:

  • Contact information: In your cover letter header , make sure to add your contact info and the addressee’s info.
  • Introduction: Write a compelling cover letter opening that captures your enthusiasm for the role and gives a snapshot of your professional background.
  • Middle paragraphs: The middle of your cover letter is where you share some details about your work history, focusing on one or two significant achievements or experiences that align with the job requirements.
  • Closing: The cover letter closing should have a strong conclusion that reiterates your interest in the role and invites further discussion in an interview.
  • Signoff: Use a professional salutation and sign your name at the end.

Remember, a cover letter should complement your resume, providing a more personal insight into your qualifications and enthusiasm for the opportunity.

How do I personalize a cover letter using a template?

You should create a new cover letter for every prospective employer. A customizable cover letter design helps you move quickly from one application to another by following a few simple steps.

Here’s how to personalize a cover letter on your own:

  • Start by downloading a free cover letter template in a format compatible with Microsoft Word or Google Docs.
  • The template comes with guidelines on how to fill it out. Replace the placeholder text with specific details relevant to your skills and experiences.
  • After customizing, save the document under a new file name. You can use this file (or the original template) as a base for future cover letters.

Customizing a template using a cover letter builder:

  • Open our Cover Letter Builder and decide whether to upload an existing cover letter or start from scratch.
  • Indicate your level of professional experience.
  • The builder will suggest appropriate templates, including exclusive premium designs, based on your experience.
  • The builder then guides you through each section of the cover letter, providing tips and auto-generated text to assist you in crafting a compelling summary of your career that showcases your experience , skills and more.
  • Once complete, download your tailored cover letter in the desired file format. It will also be saved in your account on our platform, enabling you to create and save multiple versions as needed.

How to use a cover letter template

Choose a cover letter template that highlights your unique qualities..

A cover letter is an extension of your resume. It’s your chance to present yourself to the employer and explain how your skills and experience suit the job. Your cover letter design template should answer four significant points:

  • Why you want the job
  • How you’re prepared to handle the daily requirements of the job
  • How you can fit in and adapt to the company’s culture
  • How you can help the company move forward

Show your passion and interest in the company.

Use our professional cover letter templates to explain what inspires you about your potential employer. It could be the company’s mission, a new initiative, or how you can contribute to its long-term goals. Show the hiring manager you’ve already invested time researching the company; they’ll be more likely to invest in you.

Match your skills and experiences to the job’s requirements with a suitable cover letter template.

Respond directly to duties and  skills  listed in the job description, and show your capabilities in those areas through concrete examples from your own experience and training. You can also point out a challenge the company is currently facing and how you can help solve it, similar to what our cover letter templates showcase.

Encourage the hiring manager to learn more about you.

Your cover letter should incentivize hiring managers to read your resume and follow up for an interview. Be forthright. Direct the reader to examine your resume for more details on your relevant skills and accomplishments. Conclude by expressing your readiness to meet and discuss how you can contribute. If you’re unsure how to do this, you can personalize one of our cover letter templates in our Cover Letter Builder to access professionally written content suggestions tailored to your job title.

Avoid repeating information from your resume.

While your resume and cover letter template must be similar, they shouldn’t reiterate the same information.  Review your resume  and note what you want to explain further in your cover letter; it could be a set of skills, a work achievement relevant to the job you’re applying for, or a project you know will help you stand out. A free downloadable cover letter template from this page will help you tell your story to get noticed.

Tailor your cover letter template to the job.

Whether a resume or cover letter,  tailoring your document  to the job is critical. This includes using keywords from the job description in your writing, using a tone of voice that reflects the company culture and addressing the letter to the hiring manager and not “To whom it may concern.” A cover letter Word template or Apple Pages cover letter template is easy to customize.

Match your resume and cover letter template

Matching your cover letter and resume template helps you craft a polished and cohesive job application. After all, cover letters and resumes are strong when they both read and look their best. We have all the tools and guides you need to build the perfect resume to complement your cover letter.

  • How to Write a Resume : Follow our in-depth guide to learn how to write a strong resume that effectively captures your skills and qualifications.

Cover letter template FAQ

A cover letter is a one-page document you submit alongside your resume or  CV . Its purpose is to support the content of your resume or CV by expanding on your achievements, showcasing your personality and explaining why you’re a great fit for the company.

Even though a cover letter has a supporting role in the application process, it’s no less critical and could decide whether you get hired. Check out these  cover letter basics  and our  cover letter writing tips  to get hired fast.

Yes. A recent survey found that 83% of hiring managers, recruiters and HR staff consider cover letters essential to decision-making. We always recommend writing a cover letter because:

  • It allows you to provide information that isn’t in your resume.
  • It gives hiring managers and recruiters a glimpse into your personality.
  • It has the space you need to market yourself as the best candidate.

Choose a cover letter layout template from this page to increase your chances of getting the job. Look at the  five qualities of every successful cover letter  to learn more.

You can write a cover letter for your resume in just 15 minutes — and we’re here to help you.

A successful cover letter should be formatted neatly for easy reading, and the content should catch hiring managers’ attention. To achieve the first goal, use a cover letter sample template as a model, and keep your letter to the point and one page long.

To ensure your content fits the bill, consult the job description and pinpoint essential  keywords  that you should mention in your letter. For example, if you’re applying to a customer service position that stresses knowledge of customer relations management (CRM) systems, mention your experience with CRM in your cover letter.

Doing so will also help your letter pass automated  applicant tracking systems  (ATS), which many employers use to scan cover letters for the right keywords. Using an  AI cover letter generator  can help you tailor your cover letter to your target job with keywords and industry-specific content.

Finally, your cover letter should answer the most critical question: Why are you interested in the job and the company? Explain  why you should be hired for the role  and what makes you the best fit. Employers will be impressed by a cover letter that shows you’ve done your homework and thought about how you can contribute. Download a free professional cover letter template and get started today!

A cover letter is a blank canvas where you can formally introduce yourself to the hiring manager — think of it as your sales pitch. Generally speaking, the hiring manager wants to know more about your skills and background, why you want to work for them and how you will help them. Still, this approach may differ depending on your professional experience.

For example, hiring managers will want to know why you have a career gap in your resume if you have one. If you ventured into running a small business or were affected by COVID-19, you’d want to explain what happened and show how your past experiences will help you fill this new role, as our professional cover letter templates show.

We recommend checking out our guide on what to include in a cover letter for tips from career advice experts.

Using a cover letter builder is not just OK but encouraged! Our Cover Letter Builder makes the writing process a breeze by providing over 15 cover letter templates, expert suggestions, step-by-step guidance, and customization tools to create and save as many versions of your cover letter as you want.

It’s the easiest way to assemble a professional cover letter for your resume, and all you have to do to get started is choose the downloadable cover letter template that best works for you.

A cover letter should be one page long. This  cover letter length  allows you to detail key achievements without overwhelming the reader. The recruiter or hiring manager won’t spend that much time reviewing your application, so your writing must be concise and straightforward. A work cover letter template from this page can help you organize your cover letter on one page.

If you don’t know who to address your cover letter to, here are some options to try:

  • Address the cover letter to the department you’re interested in joining. For example, “Dear Creative Department,” “Dear Accounting Department,” or “Dear [Company] Team.”
  • If you have the hiring manager’s name but are unsure whether to use titles like Mr., Mrs., or Ms., you can leave it out and use their full name. For example, “Dear John Smith” or “Dear Helena Law.”

Avoid starting your cover letter with greetings such as “To whom it may concern” or “Dear sir or madam” — it’s old-fashioned. This page’s cover letter samples can point you in the right direction.

What’s a cover letter?

What does a cover letter include, 3 cover letter samples to make your own, 3 more tips for a winning cover letter, letter for success.

You studied the job application, polished your resume, and are ready to hit “send.” But before you do, you need to craft a cover letter to support your candidacy.

A hiring manager’s job is to quickly gauge whether you have the know-how to fit the roles and responsibilities of a job. And they also want to know if you possess soft skills that bring value to company culture and the business as a whole. Every document you send to a potential employer should prove you’re the best person for the job.

Your resume or CV showcases your professional development based on skills and work experience. But the best resumes are concise, with bullet points that lead the reader to the most important information. You often don’t have enough space to truly express your value.

A good cover letter is an opportunity to highlight your experience and display your workplace personality . It gives a hiring manager a taste of what it’ll be like to work with you — and going the extra mile shows you’re genuinely interested in the job description.

To help you write a successful application for your dream job, here’s information around cover letters plus three cover letter examples to adapt to your needs.

A professional cover letter is a document you submit to a hiring manager or recruiter with your application. It’s a persuasive letter that dives deeper into your skills and experience.

But an effective cover letter should do more than just copy and paste the content of your resume. It describes how you’ll use those skills on the job. You can highlight your most relevant personal achievements and speak directly about the value proposition you’ll bring to the company.

Think of your cover letter like a movie trailer. It should make an engaging first impression , tell an exciting story , and entice the hiring manager to learn more about you.

Many people dread writing cover letters . They take time to compose, and you never know if hiring managers will actually take the time to read them. But submitting one at all shows the company that you’re serious about earning a position , proving you’re a high-quality applicant who cares about the job.

Most professional emails and letters follow the same format, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Typically, a cover letter is between 250 and 400 words and fits onto one page.

You can send a cover letter in three ways: as an email attachment, in the body of an email, or as part of an online application. Pay careful attention to the instructions in the job posting .

Some companies may prefer a specific file attachment for easy internal sharing, and sending the right format tells the hiring manager you have an eye for detail and take direction.

Here’s an example of what you’ll find in a basic cover letter template:

Header with contact information: Let your reader know who you are, with your full name and professional email address at the top of the page. You may include additional information like a personal website or LinkedIn profile , location, and contact information like a phone number.

Opening paragraph: Begin with a professional salutation . Research the company and try to find the hiring manager or recruiter's name to demonstrate professionalism and due diligence. Your opening paragraph should be a quick show of gratitude that thanks them for their time and consideration.

Body: Your second and third paragraphs should tell an engaging story introducing you as a person and an employee.

This might include a relevant anecdote about why you’re interested in the company and a personal achievement that connects the role to your professional development goals .

Always tie in skills and keywords from the job posting, and consider researching the company’s core values and wrapping them into the text.

The closing sale: Your final paragraph should reiterate your main selling points, demonstrate your enthusiasm for the job, and thank the person for their consideration. Conclude with an appropriate email sign-off .

Professional communication should be short and to the point, whether you’re writing an out-of-office message , letter of interest , or promotion announcement . Developing a cover letter format that self-promotes your best qualities without losing your reader’s attention requires careful, purposeful writing.

To write your own, here are three examples to edit based on your needs and the new job's requirements:

1. Simple cover letter template for an entry-level job

Remember that a cover letter is specific to the job and to your experience, and even putting in just five extra minutes of effort can show a potential employer you care. Here are some extra tips to make sure your application is perfect:

Prepare ahead of time: There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all application. The perfect resume is specific to the job search, responsibilities, and company you’re applying to — and the same goes for your cover letter.

Read the job post thoroughly for keywords and use them to guide your writing. Incorporating company language into your own will show that you fit the team.

Double-check your work: Misspellings, grammar mistakes, and inconsistent formatting can ruin your chances of getting an interview . Small or consistent errors insinuate that you lack effort and care.

Ask a colleague to give it a read-through to make sure you're effectively representing yourself. Likewise, run your final draft through a grammar app to ensure punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure are perfect.

Use a cover letter builder: If you’re drawing a blank on the best cover letter design or can’t find the right words, lean on available online tools. You can use a professional cover letter template on a resume builder site to guide you and ensure you check off all the right boxes for a hiring manager.

shaking-hands-after-job-interview-cover-letter-examples

While your resume highlights your skills in a structured format, the cover letter gives you more freedom to showcase your positive personality traits , celebrate your achievements, and impress a potential employer. While not every job will require a cover letter, it’s never a bad idea to go the extra mile to make a case for yourself as the best candidate.

Now that you have several cover letter examples, it’s time to get writing. Research the company, study the role, and draw the right parallels between its needs and your abilities. It could be just the motivation for a hiring manager to give your resume a little extra attention — and for you to land your next job.

1. What Is a General Cover Letter?

A generic cover letter is a universal document you can use to apply for all job types. A general cover letter highlights your key skills and experience by providing insight into the most impressive points of your resume. Knowing how to write a general cover letter can help you apply for jobs faster.

It's understandable that when you’re pressed for time, you want a universal cover letter. Something that would work for any job and position. Problem is: if you make a general cover letter too generic, you’ll hurt your chances of getting the job.

A generic cover letter feels like a timesaver, but instead, it could be an  opportunity killer . The good news is, we’ll show you how to make a general cover letter read like a love letter to the company you want to work for. Just like in this general cover letter example below:

That's a general cover letter that isn't generic. In the following chapters, you'll learn how to write one just like that.

2. How to Write a General Cover Letter

Yes, writing specific cover letters for individual job openings takes time. So here’s a strategy to speed things up:  make a universal cover letter to use as a template.

Good cover letter templates do the heavy lifting for you. You’ll still tailor this generic letter for each company and position you apply to. But it will take no more than 5 minutes per document. A perfect generic cover letter template is like playing Mad Libs: the main components of a story are already there—just fill in the blanks to make it unique.

How to write a generic cover letter quickly:

  • Create a  cover letter outline  by following the current cover letter formatting guidelines .
  • Make a cover letter header with your contact information and the information of the company you're applying to.
  • Start your cover letter with Dear + the name of the hiring manager (“Dear Hiring Manager” is a last resort.)
  • Fill the contents of your cover letter with information about your career achievements, the key skills, and most impressive work experience. Make sure that they're relevant to the job you're pursuing.
  • Use the company’s name throughout your cover letter to make it non-generic.
  • End your cover letter with a call to action that makes them reach out.
  • Include a postscript to intrigue the recipient.

Want a solution that's even faster than completing these steps? Check the general cover letter templates in the following chapters!

Well, how about that?

This general cover letter sample is enthusiastic, short, and damn compelling. It gives them some key achievements and accomplishments from your current job to show how well you’d do in the new one.

It easily allows them to picture you as the perfect candidate for the job.

Pro Tip : In your generic cover letter use the name of the company you’re applying to. It adds oomph and shows you took the time to write specifically to them.

A great cover letter can be a game-changer, but to have a shot at that dream job, you still need to write a perfect resume.

Humphrey Watson

Content Team Leader

Criminy Jickets

Brooklyn, NY 11201

Dear Mr. Watson:

I was thrilled to see the position you’ve advertised for a new copywriter. I’ve always longed to be a writer, and I would be proud to begin my writing career with the Criminy Jickets website.

During my university studies, I had many tasks which would translate well into a role as a copywriter, including research and editing of an 85-page thesis. Some achievements include:

  • My final assignment was a paper which was scored a perfect 100%.
  • I successfully tutored students who had failed a semester, improving their grades cumulatively by an entire GPA point.

Becoming the new staff copywriter on your blog would really be the highlight of this year. I love following the other writers, and I’d bring that same enthusiasm and dedication to my writing each and every day.

I would be grateful for the opportunity to prove that my university achievements can be built upon for a copy career at Criminy Jickets.

In this one, even though Jane is giving in a cover letter with no experience , she transferred some skills and achievements from her college years which fit the position.

Also, see that she called the HR manager by name in her general cover letter? This personalization shows the employer she did her homework and immediately puts her in front of other universal cover letters.

Pro Tip : Even if the rest of it is a generic cover letter, avoid the general intro statement, “ To whom it may concern .” Whether it is in basic cover letter correspondence, emails, or when you’re waiting for your grande soy latte at Starbucks, it rarely works.

But, what if you can’t find a name and need a more generic cover letter greeting? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered: How to Address a Cover Letter: Sample & Guide [20+ Examples]

4. Generic Cover Letter Template for Career Changers

If you’re not sure how to explain in your resume why you’re switching between careers, a cover letter is the right place to do it.

So show your motivation, willingness, and enthusiasm and make it work to your advantage: present how your previously-acquired skills can translate to the new position.

Here’s an example of a cover letter for a career changer:

Patricia Fuller

General Manager

2370 Belmont Ave

Bronx, NY 10458

Dear Ms. Fuller:

I’ve only ever had pleasant experiences when dealing with the sales staff at Fuller’s Furniture, from when I furnished my first apartment to recently as I renovated my kitchen. Now you have an availability for the very same sales team, and I’d love to put in my application.

In my previous role as a self-employed graphic designer, I developed many skills which would be perfectly suited to a job as a salesman, including managing clients, ensuring reliable and friendly service, and fulfilling orders. I’m sure that I could achieve similar results at Fuller’s Furniture, such as:

  • I won a design competition for color matching, which led to a 17% increase in sales
  • I won the community board’s certificate of achievement for my customer service 3 years in a row.

I enjoy helping guests with beautifying their homes and delivering great customer service, and I would really love to continue this dedication as a member of your sales team.

I eagerly look forward to the chance to show you how my graphic design experience would make me a perfect fit for your furniture store.

P.S. I’d love to sit down with you (maybe on a piece of Fuller furniture!) and go over how I can bring my knack for client-building over and replicate it at your store.

This general cover letter shows you that you might have more experience than you’d previously thought.

A graphic designer applying for a furniture sales job didn’t seem too related, but our buddy Jacob here highlighted some transferable skills and accomplishments to show them he’s more than capable.

Pro Tip : Did you notice this one has a postscript at the end? A P.S. at the end of a general cover letter is a great little hack. It grabs their eye at the beginning, even if they don’t read the rest of it.

  • Start with “Dear” and the name of the hiring manager (“Dear Hiring Manager” is a last resort.)
  • Add achievements, accomplishments, experience, and skills relevant to the job.
  • Optionally, include a postscript to intrigue them even if the rest of the letter doesn’t get read.

Remember: a cover letter should never reiterate a resume. Rather, it should complement the resume by adding supporting details and explaining certain items (such as a resume gap in employment).

Dear Mrs. Parker,

Since my sophomore year at university, DELL has been an industry trend-setting company which I would love to work for. Luckily, yesterday my colleague Marko Marletti (one of the organization's employees) called me in a hurry to inform me of DELL`s brand new Graduates program. I'm delighted to express my motivation for the entry-level ICT Assistant role.

As a recent graduate from the University of San Francisco with a B.S. in Computer Science, I would bring to the team my strong knowledge of Microsoft SQL, MS Dynamics, MS SharePoint, as well as Linux systems. Moreover, I am very passionate about backend coding, and last year I completed with excellence one of the most prestigious boot camps in San Fransisco - Nucamp.

Almost throughout my whole study, I have been working part-time as a System administrator, as I aspired and was eager to get both theoretical and practical knowledge at the same time. In this role I gained invaluable experience in server maintenance, assistance in the roll-out of Release & Deployment campaigns, setting up and configuring desktop computers, peripherals, and accounts, and assigning security levels. I built proficiency to efficiently troubleshoot a variety of technical issues for staff and end-users.

I feel ready to rise up to the challenge of an ICT Assistant role at DELL. Enclosed, please find my resume, which further illustrates my skills and educational background. Should you have any follow-up questions, I`d be happy to answer them. I look forward to further discussing this great opportunity and DELL`s needs from the Graduates program.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Career Change Cover Letter

Dear [Mr./Mx./Ms.] [Manager’s Name],

I’m writing to you regarding the currently open role of Project manager at Max Legal, which I came across on your company website. After carefully reviewing the job description, I was delighted to find out that my academic accomplishments and professional background meet all of the necessary requirements.

For the last 5 years, I have had the chance to acquire invaluable experience as a Project assistant in a multinational organization like Hewlett-Packard. I have established myself as the go-to trusted advisor for Project managers and other functional experts regarding

Project documentation excellence. My daily coordination and interaction with the big teams regarding readiness for bid submission have let me in on many insider's secrets from the PM field. One of my biggest achievements is getting the award PMO Employee of the year in 2020.

I am passionate about applying my PM expertise from the streamlined processes in a large corporation to the exciting Project manager role in Max Legal.

In addition, I am certain I can bring a high-value proposition to the team, as I have made sure to accompany my practical experience with getting PMP (Project Management Professional) certified last year. During my study, I have strategically focused my coursework and practical assignments in the following areas:

  • Project plan design
  • Project resources designation
  • Scope of work and Work breakdown structure
  • Budget plan
  • Stakeholders management
  • Project monitoring and project lifecycle management

Lastly, my colleagues say that I have naturally grown to the role of Project manager and I am excited to bring this expertise on-board.

I would be delighted to have an opportunity to personally interview you. Please accept the enclosed resume and feel free to contact me at your earliest convenience. I appreciate your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Scholarship Cover Letter

[Scholarship organization name]

[Organization address]

[Organization phone number]

Dear [Mr./Ms./Mx. Recipient’s name] / [Scholarship Committee],

My name is [NAME] and I have recently graduated with my Master in Child Psychology from UVIC - Universitat Central de Catalunya. I have found out about the Scholarship from my professor at Clinical Psychopathology - Dra. Jane Peterson, who believes I would be a great match for your Scholarship program at Child Care Association “Anima”.

Personally, I feel very passionate about working with children with special needs and enabling them to become more autonomous in daily life and self-empowered. Hence, it would be an honor for me, should I be selected for the Scholarship position of Child Assistance Counselor at Association “Anima”. In addition to my in-depth academic knowledge in the field, my value proposition to the organization is also in having 3+ years of Volunteer experience as an Assistant teacher of disadvantaged children via several ERASMUS+ international projects.

Thanks to this work I have practiced with the kid's modalities like Play therapy, Art & Music therapy, and English lessons. Apart from becoming proficient in structuring and successfully delivering Didactical lessons, I have built the necessary instrumentarium of skills to create safe emotional connections and rapport with the children.

As you can see, my expertise is a very close match to what the beneficiaries of Association “Anima” - children with disabilities, need.

Should you require references for my credentials and suitability, please do let me know.

I am really inspired by this opportunity to make a difference in the life of children and looking forward to further discussing it with you.

[Sincerely / Best / Best regards],

Cover Letter Examples That Will Help Get You Hired

Newsflash: a cover letter is not a repeat of a resume. these examples show you how it's done..

man_working on laptop_with headphones

If you're wondering how to write a cover letter , you're in the right place! Monster's library of cover letter examples can help you do exactly that.

It doesn't matter what industry you're in or level you're at in your career—to get noticed by potential employers, your professional cover letter needs to knock their socks off. Writing a good cover letter is about much more than friendly greeting; it's a tool that lets hiring managers know that you're the candidate they've been hoping for.

Because recruiters and hiring managers have seen every type of cover letter format imaginable, for maximum wow-factor, you must build a cover letter that highlights your industry-specific experience, accomplishments , and credentials.

Is a Cover Letter Necessary?

If the job ad calls for a cover letter, yes, it is necessary to include one. Failure to have a cover letter for a job can immediately disqualified you from consideration if it’s explicitly stated that one is required. As a job seeker, you need to demonstrate that you’re able to follow directions. An employer might interpret your missing cover letter to mean that you didn’t pay attention to what was asked of you. Not a good look.

If a job ad doesn’t say a cover letter is required , then you do not need to include one with your application. That said, if the job application has a section for any additional information you would like to share with an employer, it’s highly recommended that you copy and paste the text of your cover letter into this area. The same is true if you’re required to email your application; copy and paste your cover letter into the body of the email.

As good a source of candidate information as a resume is, it doesn’t really give you the same kind of opportunity to share your personality with an employer. Culture fit is very high on the list of determining factors that can cause you to be hired, and a good cover letter can mean the difference between you getting called in for an interview or not.

Cover Letter Length

A cover letter shouldn't be longer than one page; three or four paragraphs will suffice. Aim for about 250 to 400 words. Any longer, and your efforts risk being wasted.

First of all, hiring managers and recruiters are busy people who don’t have time to read through pages and pages of copy. Second, you should be able to succinctly hit your selling points. This may take a few rounds to perfect, but it’ll be worth it. Nobody wants you to spend time and energy writing scrolls of copy that a hiring manager won’t even both reading on account of you being long-winded.

Tips for Using Cover Letter Templates

1. Customize your cover letter for each job. In the examples below, you’ll see the advantage of having a dedicated space to engage with an employer, but don't rely on a generic cover letter to get noticed. Create a different cover letter for each job to which you're applying. Companies want to feel special, like you're applying to their job, not just any old job. Tell a brief story or two that demonstrates how your skills and experience can benefit the company’s particular needs.

2. Don't simply reiterate your resume. In a cover letter, you don’t just list facts about your work history—you use emotion and storytelling to add some life to the page. For example, if you see on a company’s website that they’re in the process of rolling out new products to the international market, you can talk about how you’ve been involved in a number of successful global product launches and really loved developing marketing campaigns for different countries and customs, which strengthened your dedication to connecting with customers all over the world.

3. Put your personality into it. Whatever you do, do not simply copy and paste these cover letter examples and pass them off as your own. The whole point of a cover letter is to convince an employer of your one-of-a-kind value.

Steps to Write a Cover Letter

Start with the proper greeting: Address your cover letter to the person who will be reading it. If you do not know the person's gender, write out their full name.

  • Dear Ms. Smith / Dear Mr. Jones / Dear Lee Caroll

Introduce yourself with an opening : Write a personable, inviting opening paragraph that highlights how your skills are a perfect fit to the company and position.

  • I was so excited to see your product photographer job posting on Monster, and I am confident I can support your creative department in producing high-quality product shots for marketing and social media—especially for your highly anticipated upcoming summer catalog.

Get them interested with a compelling hook: Highlight your past achievements as they relate to the job you're applying for.

  • Skilled at creating images that capture attention on social media, I've had thousands of my images appear on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, Twitter, and Tumblr. I play a key role in the visual storytelling and branding of leading consumer product companies and contribute to successful marketing campaigns.

Promote your skills : Highlight your additional relevant skills, such as computer languages or certifications.

  • I have expert knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign, Lightroom, Bridge, Illustrator, and Capture One Pro; studio and lighting setups; and equipment including ZZY cameras (I currently shoot with an EOS 5D Mark IV). I love learning about and applying the latest advances in photography tools, services, and equipment to enhance photo quality and streamline workflows.

Thank them in the close : Briefly recap your strengths as a candidate, thank the reader for their time, and include your contact information.

  • I would love the opportunity to discuss with you how I can create images that bring your brand's strategic vision to life. I can be reached at (555) 555-5555 or [email protected]. Thank you so much for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Choosing a Microsoft Word Cover Letter Template

Now that you’ve seen so many great free cover letter templates for Word, you’re probably rearing to download one, fill it out, and send it. But before you do so, please answer these questions:

  • Are you sure that you can accurately judge cover letter templates? In other words, can you identify if it really is a professionally designed cover letter template that matches both your personal brand AND the culture of your dream company?
  • Do you know exactly what to include in a cover letter ?
  • Do you have a matching resume template on hand?

If you’re a seasoned job-seeker, the first question won’t pose a major challenge: you’ve already developed a gut feeling that tells you if a random letter template you found online will work for you. But if you’re new to the job market and to the world of business letters in general, you might have a hard time estimating the visual impact of different letter templates, especially the more unusual ones.

Now let’s move on to the second question. If you’re not experienced in writing cover letters, it’s very easy to commit one or more cover letter mistakes —and get rejected as a result. Even the most professional-looking template won’t hide any potential weaknesses in the content of your cover letter. To remedy it, we recommend reading our foolproof cover letter writing guide .

Last but not least: don’t forget your resume! Ideally, your resume and your cover letter should have a matching design. But when browsing through cover letter templates for Word, you may notice that not all template designers offer matching resume templates.

This is why we recommend a safe option of going with a dedicated resume and cover letter builder—all the templates are designed with maximal versatility in mind so that you can use them to apply for any job. And it comes with helpful writing prompts you can use to speed up the process of writing your cover letter. You also won’t need to worry about formatting your cover letter . Our builder takes care of it for you.

And what cover letter templates can you expect to see? Here are just five out of all of our templates.

Expert Hint: Wait—do you even need a cover letter ? Well, almost half of all employers will skip job applications without them!
