Courtesy, in fact, springs from good parentage, nobility of mind, and a gentle heart. To be more precise, doing one’s duty in a consummate manner displays courtesy. Law of injustice is ruling the universe, misdeeds are punished and noble deeds are rewarded by a hidden power. It is not possible that If we sow seeds of corn, we cannot expect a crop of wheat. Courtesy deals with manners. Good manners spread love, affection, and kindness and win others’hearts and make sincere friends. Courtesy brings decency and politeness. A courteous person is liked and loved by all. A courteous person remains very popular among his friends and relatives. The well- behaved courteous people are the foundation of a good society and nation.The Holy Prophet (SAW) says:

”THE BEST AMONGST YOU IS THE ONE WHOSE MANNERS ARE THE BEST”

The saying shows the importance of courtesy. The Holy Prophet (SAW) himself showed a high degree of courtesy throughout his life. The Holy Prophet (SAW) gave great importance to courtesy. The Holy Prophet (SAW) condemned irrational attitude in these words; ”Do not inflict injury, nor repay one’s injury” A courteous person always shuns bad ways and follows the right one. Men have been created for perfection. The Holy Quran exhorts in these words;

”YOU ARE THE BEST OF PEOPLE EVOLVED FOR MANKIND, ENJOINING WHAT IS RIGHT, FORBIDDING WHAT IS WRONG”

A courteous man is kind and polite to everyone. He adopts good and decent manners all the time. He always respects of feelings of others. He never teases or disturbs anybody. Hazrat Ali (R.A) says; ”Meet others with smiling face, It is the very first good to others . courtesy earns good social and mutual contacts. When we say to others ”salaam” it means ”May Allah keep you in safety” In fact, we pray for the safety of the other and get the same in return. If we have good wishes for others, naturally others will also regard our sentiments and feelings. A courteous person earns great fame, even without spending a penny.

It teaches us great values. It teaches us to be ready to help others. It encourages us to join hands with those who may be in trouble. They may be sick, old or depressed. Aristotle has said: ”The goodness of good man shines through his deeds” We should not bear malice and ill-will in our hearts. We should work for the betterment of others. We should develop friendly and cordial relations with others. This is possible only through soft and polite conversation. There is a French Proverb:

”TO SPEAK KINDLY DOES NOT HURT THE TONGUE”

The elders, the seniors, and parents should act as a role model of courtesy for the youngsters and children. Teachers can play an important role in making people courteous. The value of courtesy must be kept at the priority level in educational institutions and offices.

Courtesy is a term which can be explained and interpreted in various ways. Courtesy, as a matter of fact, is a term that embraces every walk of life and concerns all of us. Each of us is normally bound with one or other forms of curtest. We have to show courtesy, on one part to elders while they, on their part too, maintain certain principles of courtesy to be extended to their young ones. That is why the cult of courtesy is governed by the principle of “give and take”.

There are numerous instances of showing courtesy to others very simple and easy causing you absolutely no difficulty on strain. For example, if you are traveling in a bus which is packed with people and you have got seat but a lady is standing. It is the principle of courtesy that you should offer her your seat, no matter whether she accepts your invitation or not.

Another form of courtesy which is generally ignored by us is that of “thanking” and saying “Please” If someone offers you a cup of tea, before you accept it, you should say “thank you.” Even if you do not want to drink it, you should say.” Thank you, but I do not drink tea.” Similarly people also refuse to use the word “Please” which as a matter of fact costs nothing. It also has a tremendous impact on the other person.

Extension School allowed trapeze artist Izzy Patrowicz to pursue big-top dreams alongside bachelor’s degree

Over the past 12 years, when trapeze artist and circus ringmaster Izzy Patrowicz wasn’t flying 40 feet in the air all over the world and performing in up to three shows a day, she was taking classes at Harvard Extension School to get her bachelor of liberal arts degree in the field of psychology.

The Salem, Massachusetts, native “was hooked” after taking her first class in “Creativity Research: Madmen, Geniuses, and Harvard Students” at the Extension School in fall 2012. “Then I decided to apply for the program and was accepted.”

“It’s been nice, honestly, to do it slowly,” Patrowicz said of her academic journey.

Patrowicz first began performing at age 10 with Circus Smirkus, an international youth troupe that hosts sleep-away camps and tours New England. While she mainly did a partner acrobatic hand balancing act, Patrowicz said her favorite stunt was the duo trapeze. Her love for the circus grew, which led to a difficult decision after high school: college or circus school?

Ultimately, Patrowicz left Salem for Whittier College in California, but only lasted a year and a half. The call of a lifetime came from a fellow artist leading Patrowicz to join the Big Apple Circus and learn the art of flying trapeze. While touring with Big Apple and other groups, Patrowicz briefly let her college career stall.

Fast-forward to 2012. Although she took a few Harvard classes in person, Patrowicz juggled most of her education online between circus stops. “All of the traveling has been amazing, but it’s been nice to take classes with people from all over the world,” she said. “It’s been really cool that everybody’s in different time zones, but they’ll come and meet at the same time for lecture.” 

“The flying trapeze act is an incredible amount of work. It’s an hour to warm up and then the act is 10 to 15 minutes long.”

This spring, Patrowicz took “The Psychology of Competition and Peak Performance” with Emily Hangen, a visiting assistant professor from Fairfield University. The course explored why some competitors choke and others thrive under pressure.

“It is not often we have a professional circus performer in the class,” Hangen said. “During the first day of introductions, her fascinating background immediately stood out and caught my attention.” Patrowicz’s experience made her an engaged student who always had insightful comments to contribute, the instructor added.

Patrowicz’s art has taken her throughout Europe, Australia, and the Middle East. “The flying trapeze act is an incredible amount of work. It’s an hour to warm up and then the act is 10 to 15 minutes long,” she explained. Evenings are spent practicing for the next day’s performance.

Recently, Patrowicz became one of the few women who can do a triple somersault — an act first performed by the young Latvian aerialist Lena Jordan in 1897, according to Guinness World Records. The daring act has Patrowicz soar through the air, tuck into a somersault, and open out for the catch.

When she wasn’t under the big top or in class, Patrowicz made elaborate costumes for herself and her boyfriend, who also performs. But the 33-year-old knows she can’t perform forever. She hopes to use her entertainment expertise as well as her psychology degree to plan for her future.

“I am confident that Izzy will continue to impress with her educational and professional pursuits,” Hangen said. “She is clear-eyed, intelligent, and has shown a maturity in considering and exploring future aims in her life. Given her work ethic and intelligence, I’m excited to see how far she goes and the contributions she will make in her next endeavors.”

Five MIT faculty elected to the National Academy of Sciences for 2024

Guoping feng, piotr indyk, daniel kleitman, daniela rus, senthil todadri, and nine alumni are recognized by their peers for their outstanding contributions to research..

The National Academy of Sciences has elected 120 members and 24 international members, including five faculty members from MIT. Guoping Feng, Piotr Indyk, Daniel J. Kleitman, Daniela Rus, and Senthil Todadri were elected in recognition of their “distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.” Membership to the National Academy of Sciences is one of the highest honors a scientist can receive in their career.

Among the new members added this year are also nine MIT alumni, including Zvi Bern ’82; Harold Hwang ’93, SM ’93; Leonard Kleinrock SM ’59, PhD ’63; Jeffrey C. Lagarias ’71, SM ’72, PhD ’74; Ann Pearson PhD ’00; Robin Pemantle PhD ’88; Jonas C. Peters PhD ’98; Lynn Talley PhD ’82; and Peter T. Wolczanski ’76. Those elected this year bring the total number of active members to 2,617, with 537 international members.

The National Academy of Sciences is a private, nonprofit institution that was established under a congressional charter signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. It recognizes achievement in science by election to membership, and — with the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine — provides science, engineering, and health policy advice to the federal government and other organizations.

Guoping Feng

Guoping Feng is the James W. (1963) and Patricia T. Poitras Professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences. He is also associate director and investigator in the McGovern Institute for Brain Research, a member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and director of the Hock E. Tan and K. Lisa Yang Center for Autism Research.

His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate the development and function of synapses, the places in the brain where neurons connect and communicate. He’s interested in how defects in the synapses can contribute to psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. By understanding the fundamental mechanisms behind these disorders, he’s producing foundational knowledge that may guide the development of new treatments for conditions like obsessive-compulsive disorder and schizophrenia.

Feng received his medical training at Zhejiang University Medical School in Hangzhou, China, and his PhD in molecular genetics from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He did his postdoctoral training at Washington University at St. Louis and was on the faculty at Duke University School of Medicine before coming to MIT in 2010. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2023.

Piotr Indyk

Piotr Indyk is the Thomas D. and Virginia W. Cabot Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He received his magister degree from the University of Warsaw and his PhD from Stanford University before coming to MIT in 2000.

Indyk’s research focuses on building efficient, sublinear, and streaming algorithms. He’s developed, for example, algorithms that can use limited time and space to navigate massive data streams, that can separate signals into individual frequencies faster than other methods, and can address the “nearest neighbor” problem by finding highly similar data points without needing to scan an entire database. His work has applications on everything from machine learning to data mining.

He has been named a Simons Investigator and a fellow of the Association for Computer Machinery. In 2023, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Daniel J. Kleitman

Daniel Kleitman, a professor emeritus of applied mathematics, has been at MIT since 1966. He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and his master’s and PhD in physics from Harvard University before doing postdoctoral work at Harvard and the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Kleitman’s research interests include operations research, genomics, graph theory, and combinatorics, the area of math concerned with counting. He was actually a professor of physics at Brandeis University before changing his field to math, encouraged by the prolific mathematician Paul Erdős. In fact, Kleitman has the rare distinction of having an Erdős number of just one. The number is a measure of the “collaborative distance” between a mathematician and Erdős in terms of authorship of papers, and studies have shown that leading mathematicians have particularly low numbers.

He’s a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has made important contributions to the MIT community throughout his career. He was head of the Department of Mathematics and served on a number of committees, including the Applied Mathematics Committee. He also helped create web-based technology and an online textbook for several of the department’s core undergraduate courses. He was even a math advisor for the MIT-based film “Good Will Hunting.”

Daniela Rus

Daniela Rus, the Andrew (1956) and Erna Viterbi Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, is the director of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). She also serves as director of the Toyota-CSAIL Joint Research Center.

Her research on robotics, artificial intelligence, and data science is geared toward understanding the science and engineering of autonomy. Her ultimate goal is to create a future where machines are seamlessly integrated into daily life to support people with cognitive and physical tasks, and deployed in way that ensures they benefit humanity. She’s working to increase the ability of machines to reason, learn, and adapt to complex tasks in human-centered environments with applications for agriculture, manufacturing, medicine, construction, and other industries. She’s also interested in creating new tools for designing and fabricating robots and in improving the interfaces between robots and people, and she’s done collaborative projects at the intersection of technology and artistic performance.

Rus received her undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa and her PhD in computer science from Cornell University. She was a professor of computer science at Dartmouth College before coming to MIT in 2004. She is part of the Class of 2002 MacArthur Fellows; was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; and is a fellow of the Association for Computer Machinery, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence.

Senthil Todadri

Senthil Todadri , a professor of physics, came to MIT in 2001. He received his undergraduate degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur and his PhD from Yale University before working as a postdoc at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara, California.

Todadri’s research focuses on condensed matter theory. He’s interested in novel phases and phase transitions of quantum matter that expand beyond existing paradigms. Combining modeling experiments and abstract methods, he’s working to develop a theoretical framework for describing the physics of these systems. Much of that work involves understanding the phenomena that arise because of impurities or strong interactions between electrons in solids that don’t conform with conventional physical theories. He also pioneered the theory of deconfined quantum criticality, which describes a class of phase transitions, and he discovered the dualities of quantum field theories in two dimensional superconducting states, which has important applications to many problems in the field.

Todadri has been named a Simons Investigator, a Sloan Research Fellow, and a fellow of the American Physical Society. In 2023, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

The Black Female Artists Redefining Minimalism

A new generation of painters and sculptors is finding creative freedom by making rigorously pared-down work.

JENNIE C. JONES was a 20-year-old art student when she first saw the work of the minimalist painter and sculptor Ellsworth Kelly installed at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1989. These were some of Kelly’s signature panels: bold, monochromatic shapes of saturated color in oil on canvas. They were flat like paintings but sculptural in their defiance of right angles. Jones recalls being struck most of all by what Kelly’s work displaced. It occupied the second floor of the museum’s two-story sculpture court, which had been redesigned the previous year to showcase classical sculpture and painting. “They took down all these other artists to put up this suite,” Jones says. “I was so secretly envious that Kelly was able to hold that space.” Such freedom claimed by a renowned white male artist stood in contrast to her own growing sense as a young Black woman artist of being pigeonholed, of that same freedom — of space, of form — not being available to her.

Today, Jones, 55, is a celebrated minimalist whose work on paper and canvas, in sculpture and sound, is scrupulously reduced to its geometries, its tones, its colors. Next April, she will take over the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s roof garden, where she’ll debut her first multiwork outdoor sculptural installation. She occasionally paints in acrylic directly onto acoustic panels, sometimes in muted grays and whites that very nearly appear to blend into the wall. Seeing Kelly’s radical reductivism on such a grand scale was a provocation, one that redirected her trajectory. “Where am I in this story?” Jones thought. Over time, she found answers, both in the work of artists like Kelly and in what she calls “alternative origin stories” through which she traced her nascent interest in minimalism to the Black diasporic tradition, from Gabonese masks and Cameroonian mud huts to Miles Davis’s spare solos performed with his back turned to the audience.

JONES IS ONE of several contemporary Black women artists for whom minimalism — long marked by its hypermasculinity and by the conspicuous absence of nonwhite artists — has unexpectedly become an expressive language in which they are fluent but don’t always, or only, choose to communicate. The first wave of minimalism in America emerged as a postwar avant-garde that sought to extinguish artist subjectivity in favor of the object — a rejection of the excesses of self-expression and of the cult of genius that had come to define Abstract Expressionism and other movements of the 1940s and ’50s. In response to political polarization, economic instability and war, minimalists in the 1960s called for austerity and a return to aesthetic first principles: A work of art should reveal nothing more than itself; or as Frank Stella put it in 1966, “What you see is what you see.” Minimalism embraced cheap, mass-produced materials — plywood, granite, brick, metal — in order to, in the late Carl Andre’s words, “get down to something which resembles … some kind of blankness.” One of the most famous works of minimalism is Andre’s “ Equivalent VIII ” (1966), an arrangement of 120 firebricks, about which the artist told the BBC, “My work doesn’t mean anything.”

Drawing upon a minimalist vocabulary of object and image, Jones and her peers often bring to bear a more personal and expressly political set of conceptual and aesthetic aims. Aria Dean , 30, a New York-based sculptor and theorist who crafts “objects that speak to the truth of the process of their coming into being,” cites the influence of Robert Morris , who used basic carpentry techniques to argue that art should allow “the spectator to focus on their physical relationship to the work, the particularity of its space of encounter in real time.” Bethany Collins, 39, who lives in Chicago, occasionally makes simple shapes on handmade paper that have been compared to the work of Agnes Martin ; she also recently completed a series titled “ Old Ship ,” in which she uses pink granite dust from the base of a dismantled Confederate monument in Charlottesville, Va., to forge three-dimensional forms on canvas inspired by architectural details from the Old Ship A.M.E. Zion Church in her hometown, Montgomery, Ala. Nikita Gale , 40, lives in Los Angeles and uses manufactured materials that riff on the legacies of Andre and Michael Heizer. In the artist’s 2022 exhibition “ End of Subject ” at New York’s 52 Walker gallery, everyday objects like barricades became metonyms for the ways in which individuals organize, divide and view one another in social settings.

In making such work, they are often still — as Jones was in 1989 — coming up against the expectation that their art should hew to a different set of traditions. Though the history of nonfigurative work by Black artists is rich and deep, from Sam Gilliam to Alma Thomas , Norman Lewis to Stanley Whitney , Black art has long borne the expectation of figuration and of explicit political statement. The imperative to make meaning clear — and to do so primarily through figuration — has its roots in a tradition of resistance. It is a matter not simply of style but of political necessity: that the Black artist’s mastery of form could serve as evidence against white supremacy’s mismeasure of Black creativity. Images of noble and beautiful Blackness could also function as a necessary counterbalance to the pernicious output of Black stereotypes found throughout the history of Western art. The greatest champion of the power of such images was W.E.B. Du Bois, who argues in his essay “ Criteria for Negro Art ” (1926) that “[a]ll art is propaganda and ever must be, despite the wailing of the purists. … I do not care a damn for any art that is not used for propaganda.” Both the commercial marketplace and Black people themselves have called upon Black artists to render Black faces, Black bodies, Black lives.

Jones recalls, several years ago, being at the home of a Black collector who clinked his wineglass and announced to the table that he was puzzled at first when an institution asked him to host a dinner in Jones’s honor. “I didn’t know from her work that she was Black,” he said. Jones was quick to reply, “I didn’t know you were Black, either, until tonight. What are you saying?” For Jones, minimalism offers a subversive aesthetic strategy, coded like the talking drums of her enslaved ancestors. It’s also no coincidence that Jones and her peers are making minimalist work in a moment that mirrors the conditions that gave birth to minimalism in the first place. In a noisy and contentious cultural moment, perhaps restraint, a conscious quiet, a studied refusal, might be the most powerful statement of all.

STILL, IT’S A fair question to ask: What does a mirrored cube have to say about geopolitical unrest? What do blocks of color on canvas care about deforestation in the Amazon? On the surface, minimalism is not politically prescriptive, though the minimalists of the 1960s could be propagandists, too, using their platform to promote political causes. One of the first major minimalist group shows, featuring works by Andre, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Robert Mangold and others at New York’s Paula Cooper Gallery in 1968, was a benefit for Veterans Against the War and the Student Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam. In 1970, when the United States was engaged in a secret bombing campaign of Cambodia, Morris produced five detailed proposals for war memorials; one of them, called “Crater With Smoke,” was to be, in minimalist fashion, just that. That same year, in a symposium in Artforum titled “The Artist and Politics,” Judd submitted a handwritten letter that began , “I’ve always thought that my work had political implications,” and continued to explain that he was influenced by “the events of the ’50s, the continued state of war, the destruction of the U.N. by the Americans and the Russians, the rigid useless political parties, the general exploitation and both the Army and [the Red Scare tactics of Joseph] McCarthy.”

“The choice of being an artist for me is bound in the condition of politics,” the Beacon, N.Y.-based painter and sculptor Torkwase Dyson , 51, explains. Dyson creates surfaces that often underscore the means of their making, accumulating depth of color and texture through the accretion of pigment and washes, blowing paint across canvas, scratching and scoring what she’s built up to reveal tensions on the surface and what lies beneath. These formal practices are an outgrowth of her critical perspectives on power and politics, which she traces in part to the work of the post-minimalist painter Mel Bochner , “who was asking radical, spatial questions — questions about language and class and production and belonging.” Dyson has distilled much of her efforts into a vocabulary of shapes and forms, what she calls “hyper shapes,” that comprise her theory of Black Compositional Thought, an “ecosystem of geometries connected to liberation strategies.” These hyper shapes began as visualizations of the various enclosures that enslaved Black Americans used as vehicles for their own liberation: The hull of the ship docked in Richmond, Va., in which Anthony Burns stowed away for Boston becomes in Dyson’s hands a curved line; the box in which Henry “Box” Brown mailed himself to freedom becomes a square.

There is another Black artistic tradition, one that promotes beauty as an end in itself and insists upon indeterminacy as the closest approximation to the lived experience of being Black in America. John Coltrane’s “ Alabama ” (1963) expresses the anguish and rage against the Ku Klux Klan’s murder of four little girls at 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala., without language, in the doleful tones of tenor saxophone, piano, bass and drums alone. For the artists who make such pieces, minimalism’s austerity and self-restriction hold the potential for freedom. At a time in which the market for demonstrably Black art is booming, the avant-garde might well reside in work that denies the easy consolation of signposting and signaling in favor of a subterranean and subversive mode that resists literal interpretation, that demands rumination, self-reflection and might even deflect consumption. In this regard, minimalism is both a style and a strategy for Black artists today. “My responsibility,” Jones says, “is to afford myself all the creative freedoms that my ancestors didn’t have.”

San Diego State adds another defensive lineman from the transfer portal

Arizona State transfer Samuel Benjamin, a 6-foot-5, 285-pound defensive tackle, is San Diego State’s third portal pickup in two weeks on the defensive line

San Diego State added more depth on the defensive line Monday morning, when Arizona State transfer defensive tackle Samuel Benjamin announced his commitment on social media.

Benjamin, a 6-foot-5, 285-pound redshirt sophomore, is from the Tucson suburb of Oro Valley, Ariz. He spent a year at Idaho State before transferring last year to ASU.

Benjamin also considered offers from Colorado State, UNLV and Bowling Green before choosing the Aztecs.

“I see my role as coming in and competing for the starting spot and trying to make an immediate impact on the team,” he said.

Benjamin played in 10 games for the Sun Devils, recording five tackles with one quarterback hurry.

Benjamin was lightly recruited out of Ironwood Ridge High School before recording 10 sacks his senior season.

SDSU focused on adding depth along the defensive line after recording only 18 sacks last season, six by linemen. Coaches identified it as an ongoing area of need during spring practice.

Benjamin is the eighth player to commit to SDSU from the spring portal window, leaving the Aztecs with one remaining scholarship available.

The five defensive transfers include linemen Benjamin, Ezekiel Larry (Yale) , Jared Badie (Illinois) and Krishna Clay (College of San Mateo) and linebacker Kyle Moretti (Central Michigan) .

Three offensive transfers include offensive linemen Nicholas Green (Tennessee State) and Joe Borjon (Arizona) and running back Marquez Cooper (Ball State) , who played for SDSU coach Sean Lewis from 2020-22 at Kent State.

SDSU also recently awarded a scholarship to kicker Gabriel Plascencia, a junior walk-on from Oakland who is competing with Nick Lopez to be the Aztecs’ starting kicker.

Plascencia had an opportunity to kick late last season when starter Jack Browning had a leg injury, going 4-for-4 on field goals with a long of 46 yards.

Professor Emeritus Jerome Connor, pioneer in structural mechanics, dies at 91

Jerome J. Connor ’53, SM ’54, ScD ’59, professor emeritus in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and a member of the MIT faculty since 1959, died on March 31. He was 91 years old.

Over a remarkable career spanning nearly six decades at the Institute, Connor was a prolific scholar and highly respected mentor to several generations of students, many of whom now hold notable positions in academia and industry around the world. His earliest research contributed to the pioneering numerical methods widely used today in structural engineering, such as the finite element method, and was also an early pioneer of the boundary element method. In addition, Connor was the lead proponent of the technical discipline referred to as motion-based design, which is based on limiting displacements against earthquake effects by means of structural control. His leadership role in the application of numerical methods to structural engineering led to significant advances in the numerical simulation of structural and material behavior.

“He was well-known for his intellectual leadership, exceptional dedication to the department, and extraordinary mentoring of students, faculty, and staff,” says Oral Buyukozturk, the George Macomber Professor in Construction Management, who first met Connor when he was an adjunct associate professor at Brown University and was invited to lecture at MIT.

Connor led the department in new teaching and research directions, advocating the importance of materials research and of design education in the civil engineering curriculum. For over 20 years, Connor led the high-performance structures track in the Master of Engineering (MEng) program as faculty advisor. In addition to classroom teaching, he helped MEng students think outside of the box in their design of skyscrapers and bridges. He often accompanied students on weeklong national and international visits to prominent construction sites during MIT’s Independent Activities Period. With his wife Barbara and their family, he regularly entertained students at their summer home on Cape Cod. His dedication and development of the program contributed to its success and recognition at peer institutions as one of the best professional MEng programs in the nation — eagerly sought out by students in structural engineering.

“Connor was truly devoted to our students and he was passionate about the field of structural design. He introduced a number of pedagogical innovations that we still use today, such as semester-long design projects as well as on-site visits to innovative, signature projects together with their design engineers,” says John Ochsendorf, professor of architecture and civil and environmental engineering, who taught with Connor for 10 years and currently leads the structural mechanics and design track of the MEng program.

Adoring mentor and visionary

Connor was a beloved mentor, and from 2007 to 2014 organized and managed MIT undergraduates’ participation in the National Steel Bridge competition. Buyukozturk recalls how “he was always coming up with new and innovative concepts for the competition; several times his team was selected as top in the nation and year after year his students were placed in the top three.”

MIT professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering Eduardo Kausel, who was a graduate student of Connor’s and then later a colleague, remembers him fondly as an incredible teacher and colleague.

"Jerry was an excellent teacher and I enjoyed taking his advanced computational mechanics class. He was brilliant in computational mechanics and excelled in everything he did,” says Kausel. “As a colleague, he was always kind and had a gentle demeanor; I never saw him getting angry or voicing harsh words. He also had this fantastic ability to mentor students who would go on not only to become very successful as outstanding professionals, but also very wealthy,” Kausel says.

Kausel also remembers Connor’s uncanny ability to look into the future and know where the next big trend occurred in the field. Connor was one of the first researchers to work on the boundary element method in structural engineering. The method is effective in understanding how fluid interacts with structures to ensure its stability, safety, and efficiency. Connor also experimented with artificial intelligence well before it became popular and played a significant role in leading a team of MIT researchers in the development of the STRUDL computer code, which became a highly influential software package for structural analysis and design.

In addition to structural mechanics, he pursued computational fluid mechanics, helping develop early finite element analysis in both the time and frequency domains. His models had applications to offshore engineering, including tidal circulation, and the behavior and design of marine structures for resiliency in withstanding extreme events, including those related to climate change.

Buyukozturk credits the way the department has evolved into what it is today because of Connor’s direction and vision. “Priorities for research change over time, but Jerry set forth a basic roadmap for prioritizing research in computational mechanics, engineering design, and the development of sustainable materials that cut across the entire department in a wider scope,” he says. 

Influential wide-ranging career

Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, on May 19, 1932, Connor attended Boston College High School and received his bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees in civil engineering from MIT. Before he returned to MIT to become a faculty member, he went to work at the Army Materials Lab in Watertown, designing missile systems during the Vietnam War. While on sabbatical in 1983, he served as the dean of the Department of Engineering at Northeastern University and the director of the MIT Sea Grant Program.

Over the span of his career, Connor’s research in structural mechanics attracted the interest of the international community. He spoke at conferences around the world and consulted on many engineering projects, including the Hancock Tower glass crisis, the Twin Towers in New York, and the Parthenon in Greece, among many others. His papers were cited and published among the top engineering journals, and he was honored with numerous awards, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Thessaloniki in Greece. He authored many books on structural engineering, the boundary element method, motion-based design, and computational fluid mechanics. His books have been used in doctoral programs at universities around the world.  

Connor led a rich and adventurous life outside of his academic one. Known as “Jerry” to his friends and colleagues, Connor traveled to more than 25 different countries around the world with his wife, Barbara, but was especially fond of the Provence in southern France. Some of his memorable adventures included taking the family by Volkswagen bus throughout Europe during the holiday periods and, during a sabbatical from MIT in 1970, sailing to England on the Queen Elizabeth 2 with his then-young children.

Connor is survived by his wife Barbara, and by his six children: Patricia and her husband Richard, Stephen and his wife Madeline, Brian and his wife Michele, Michael and his wife Christine, Mark and his wife Kathy, Tracey and her husband Maurice, and 14 grandchildren. Gifts in Connor’s memory can be made to Boston College High School .
