Case Study and Passage Based Questions for Class 10 Science Chapter 10 Light Reflection and Refraction

In CBSE Class 10 Science Paper, Students will have to answer some questions based on  Assertion and Reason . There will be a few questions based on case studies and passage based as well. In that, a paragraph will be given, and then the MCQ questions based on it will be asked.

Here, we have provided case based/passage based questions for Class 10 Science  Chapter 10 Light Reflection and Refraction .

Question 1:

Read the following and answer any four questions from (i) to (v).

The spherical mirror forms different types of images when the object is placed at different locations. When the image is formed on screen, the image is real and when the image does not form on screen, the image is virtual. When the two reflected rays meet actually, the image is real and when they appear to meet, the image is virtual.

A concave mirror always forms a real and inverted image for different positions of the object. But if the object is placed between the focus and pole. the image formed is virtual and erect.

A convex mirror always forms a virtual, erect and diminished image. A concave mirror is used as doctor’s head mirror to focus light on body parts like eyes, ears, nose etc., to be examined because it can form erect and magnified image of the object. The convex mirror is used as a rear view mirrors in automobiles because it can form an small and erect image of an object.

(i) When an object is placed at the centre of curvature of a concave mirror, the image formed is (a) larger than the object (b) smaller than the object (c) same size as that of the object (d) highly enlarged.

(ii) No matter how far you stand from a mirror, your image appears erect. The mirror is likely to be (a) plane (b) concave (c) convex (d) either plane or convex.

(iii) A child is standing in front of a magic mirror. She finds the image of her head bigger, the middle portion of her body of the same size and that of the legs smaller. The following is the order of combinations for the magic mirror from the top. (a) Plane, convex and concave (b) Convex, concave and plane (c) Concave, plane and convex (d) Convex, plane and concave

(iv) To get an image larger than the object, one can use (a) convex mirror but not a concave mirror (b) a concave mirror but not a convex mirror (c) either a convex mirror or a concave mirror (d) a plane mirror.

(v) A convex mirror has wider field of view because (a) the image formed is much smaller than the object and large number of images can be seen. (b) the image formed is much closer to the mirror (c) both (a) and (b) (d) none of these.

Question 2:

The lenses forms different types of images when object placed at different locations. When a ray is incident parallel to the principal axis, then after refraction, it passes through the focus or appears to come from the focus.

When a ray goes through the optical centre of the lens, it passes without any deviation. If the object is placed between focus and optical center of the convex lens, erect and magnified image is formed.

As the object is brought closer to the convex lens from infinity to focus, the image moves away from the convex lens from focus to infinity. Also the size of image goes on increasing and the image is always real and inverted.

A concave lens always gives a virtual, erect and diminished image irrespective to the position of the object.

(ii) When the object is placed at the focus of concave lens, the image formed is (a) real and smaller (b) virtual and inverted (c) virtual and smaller (d) real and erect

(iii) The size of image formed by a convex lens when the object is placed at the focus of convex lens is (a) small (b) point in size (c) highly magnified (d) same as that of object

(iv) When the object is placed at 2F in front of convex lens, the location of image is (a) at F (b) at 2 F on the other side (c) at infinity (d) between F and optical center

(v) At which location of object in front of concave lens, the image between focus and optical centre is formed (a) anywhere between centre and infinity (b) at F (c) at 2F (d) infinity

Questions based on case studies are some real-life examples. The questions are asked based on a given paragraph i.e. Case Study.  Usually, 4-5 questions are asked on the basis of the given passage. In most cases, these are either MCQs or assertion & reason type questions. Let’s take an example to understand. There is one paragraph on how nitrogen is generated in the atmosphere. On the basis of this paragraph, the board asks a few objective-type questions. In other words, it is very similar to the unseen passages given in language papers. But the real cases may be different. So, read this article till the end to understand it thoroughly.

What is CBE?

CBSE stands for competency-based education. The case study questions are part of this CBE. The purpose of CBE is to demonstrate the learning outcomes and attain proficiency in particular competencies.

Case-based Question -1

Read the following and answer any four questions: Salt of a strong acid and strong base is neutral with a pH value of 7. NaCl common salt is formed by a combination of hydrochloride and sodium hydroxide solution. This is the salt that is used in food. Some salt is called rock salt bed of rack salt was formed when seas of bygone ages dried up. The common salt thus obtained is an important raw material for various materials of daily use, such as sodium hydroxide, baking soda, washing soda, and bleaching powder.

How to Attempt the Case-Based Questions in Science?

Before answering this question, let’s read the text given in question number 17 of the CBSE Model Question Paper.

All living cells require energy for various activities. This energy is available by the breakdown of simple carbohydrates either using oxygen or without using oxygen.

See, there are only two sentences and CBSE is asking you 5 questions based on these two sentences. Now let’s check the first questions given there.

Energy in the case of higher plants and animals is obtained by a) Breathing b) Tissue respiration c) Organ respiration d) Digestion of food

Now let us know if you can relate the question to the paragraph directly. The two sentences are about energy and how it is obtained. But neither the question nor the options have any similar text in the paragraph.

So the conclusion is, in most cases, you will not get direct answers from the passage. You will get only an idea about the concept. If you know it, you can answer it but reading the paragraph even 100 times is not going to help you.

Long Answer Questions (5 Marks)

1. A convex lens has a focal length of \[10\] cm. At what distance from the lens should the object be placed so that it forms a real and inverted image $20$ cm. away from the lens? What would be the size of the image formed if the object is $2$ cm high? With the help of a ray, the diagram shows the formation of the image by the lens in this case?

Ans: Given, the focal length of the convex lens,

$\Rightarrow f=+10$ cm

Also, given the image formed is real and inverted with the image distance as $20$ cm.

$\Rightarrow v=+20$ cm

From the lens formula, we have: 

$\Rightarrow \dfrac{1}{f}=\dfrac{1}{v}-\dfrac{1}{u}$

$\Rightarrow \dfrac{1}{10}=\dfrac{1}{20}-\dfrac{1}{u}$

$\Rightarrow \dfrac{1}{u}=\dfrac{1}{20}-\dfrac{1}{10}$

$\Rightarrow \dfrac{1}{u}=\dfrac{-1}{20}$

$\Rightarrow u=-20$ cm.

$\therefore $ The object is placed at a distance of $20$ cm.

Magnification is given as,

$\Rightarrow m=-\dfrac{v}{u}$

$\Rightarrow m=-\dfrac{20}{\left( -20 \right)}$

$\Rightarrow m=+1$

Also, magnification is given by, $m=\dfrac{Height\text{ of the image}}{Height\text{ of the object}}$.

$\therefore m=\dfrac{Height\text{ of the image}}{2}$

$\Rightarrow 1=\dfrac{Height\text{ of the image}}{2}$

$\Rightarrow Height\text{ of the image}=2$ cm.

Thus, the image is of the same size as that of the object and it is real and inverted.

2. Draw a ray diagram to show the use of a convex lens for the formation of images having the following characteristics.

3. A convex lens forms a real and inverted image of a needle at a distance of $50$ cm. from it. Where is the needle placed in front of the convex lens if the image is equal to the size of objects? Also, find the power of the lens.

Ans: Given, the image is real and inverted at a distance of $50$ cm.

$\Rightarrow v=+50$ cm

Also given, Height of image $=$ Height of object

We know, magnification is given as,

$\therefore -\dfrac{v}{u}=\dfrac{Height\text{ of the image}}{Height\text{ of the object}}$

Since, Height of image $=$ Height of object and $v=+50$ cm

$\Rightarrow -\dfrac{50}{u}=1$

$\Rightarrow u=-50$ cm

$\Rightarrow \dfrac{1}{f}=\dfrac{1}{50}-\dfrac{1}{-50}$

$\Rightarrow f=25$ cm

$\Rightarrow f=0.25$ m

The power of a lens is given by,

$\Rightarrow P=\dfrac{1}{f}$

$\Rightarrow P=\dfrac{1}{0.25}$  m

$\Rightarrow P=+4$ D

4. One-half of a convex lens is covered with black paper. Will this lens produce a complete image of the object? Verify your answers experimentally. Explain your observations.

Ans: If we cover one-half of a convex lens with black paper it is observed that it produces a complete image of the object.

Representing the given situation with a ray diagram.

One-half of a convex lens is covered with black paper

Adjust the position of the burning candle such that its image is formed on the screen placed on the other side of the lens.

We get a full image of the burning candle on the screen.

Thus, from the above observation, we conclude that the formation of an image does not depend on the length of the lens, but the brightness of the image formed on the screen depends since the number of rays passing through the lens gets reduced on covering half the lens with black paper.

5. An object $5$ cm in length is held $25$ cm away from a converging lens of focal length $10$ cm. Draw the ray diagram and find the position, size, and nature of the image formed.

Ans: Given focal length of the lens, $f=+10$ cm.

Object distance from the converging lens is given to be $25$ cm and the height of the object ($ho$) is given to be $5$ cm.

$\Rightarrow u=-25$ cm

$\Rightarrow ho=5$ cm

$\Rightarrow \dfrac{1}{10}=\dfrac{1}{v}-\dfrac{1}{-25}$

$\Rightarrow \dfrac{1}{v}=\dfrac{1}{25}-\dfrac{1}{10}$

$\Rightarrow v=\dfrac{50}{3}$ cm

$\Rightarrow v=16.7$ cm

Thus, we conclude that the image formed is real and inverted and is formed at a distance of $16.7$ cm on the other side of the lens.

Also, magnification is given by, $m=\dfrac{Height\text{ of the image}}{Height\text{ of the object}}=\dfrac{hi}{ho}$.

$\therefore -\dfrac{v}{u}=\dfrac{hi}{ho}$

$\Rightarrow \dfrac{16.7}{-25}=\dfrac{hi}{5}$

$\Rightarrow hi=-\dfrac{10}{3}$ cm

Hence, the image is diminished.

Ans: Given focal length of the lens, $f=15$ cm.

$\Rightarrow v=-10$ cm

We observe that the image distance is less than the focal length, hence the image formed would be virtual and erect.

$\Rightarrow \dfrac{1}{15}=\dfrac{1}{-10}-\dfrac{1}{u}$

$\Rightarrow \dfrac{1}{u}=-\dfrac{1}{10}-\dfrac{1}{15}$

$\Rightarrow u=-6$ cm

These chromosomes are called sex chromosomes or allosomes. X and Y chromosomes are called sex chromosomes. In Kunjpura village, located in Karnal district, Haryana, Aditya Aggarwal and his older brother Amit Aggarwal run Tee Cee Industries, a steel plant set up by their ancestors in 1984. Along with this, they also run a gaushala that houses 1,200 cows that can no longer produce milk. Ozone (O3 ) is a molecule formed by three atoms of oxygen. While O2 , which we normally refer to as oxygen, is essential for all aerobic forms of life. Ozone, is a deadly poison. However, at the higher levels of the atmosphere, ozone performs an essential function. It shields the surface of the earth from ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun.

In our daily activities, we generate a lot of material that are thrown away. What are some of these waste materials? What happens after we throw them away? Let us perform an activity to find answers to these questions.

  • Collect waste material from your homes. This could include all the waste generated during a day, like kitchen waste (spoilt food, vegetable peels, used tea leaves, milk packets and empty cartons), waste paper, empty medicine bottles/strips/bubble packs, old and torn clothes and broken footwear.
  • Bury this material in a pit in the school garden or if there is no space available, you can collect the material in an old bucket/ flower pot and cover with at least 15 cm of soil.
  • Keep this material moist and observe at 15-day intervals.

These materials will be acted upon by physical processes like heat and pressure, but under the ambient conditions found in our environment, these persist for a long time.

It was led by Mahatma Gandhi and lasted from March 12, 1930 to April 6, 1930 . The march was a direct-action campaign of tax resistance and nonviolent protest against the British salt monopoly. Gandhi led a large group of people from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi , a coastal village in Gujarat. The group produced salt from seawater to break the salt law.

What was the Salt Satyagraha?

The Salt Satyagraha, also known as the Salt March, was a nonviolent civil disobedience movement in colonial India. It was led by Mahatma Gandhi and lasted from March 12, 1930 to April 6, 1930.

  • The march was a direct-action movement against the British salt monopoly, focusing on tax resistance and nonviolence.
  • Gandhi led a large crowd from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi, a coastal village in Gujarat. To avoid the salt prohibition, the gang made salt from seawater.
  • The Salt Satyagraha was a major turning point in the Indian independence movement. It showed the British that Indians were willing to stand up for their rights and that they were united in their opposition to British rule.
  • The Salt Satyagraha also inspired other movements around the world, including the American Civil Rights Movement. The Salt Satyagraha was a significant event in Indian history.

The Salt Satyagraha – A Case Study

Mahatma Gandhi, after the Non-Cooperation Movement ended, focused on social reform. In 1928, he re-entered politics, leading to an all-India campaign against the all-White Simon Commission.

  • Gandhi did not participate in this movement but gave blessings to a peasant satyagraha in Bardoli.
  • In December 1929, the Congress held its annual session in Lahore, which marked the election of Jawaharlal Nehru as President and the commitment to “Purna Swaraj” or complete independence.
  • On January 26, 1930, “Independence Day” was observed, with the national flag hoisted and patriotic songs sung.
  • Gandhi instructed that the Declaration of Independence should be made by all villages and cities and that meetings should be held at the same time in all places.
  • Participants would take a pledge affirming the inalienable right of the Indian people to have freedom and enjoy the fruits of their labour.

Mahatma Gandhi announced his intention to lead a march to break the salt monopoly in British India, which gave the state a monopoly over the production and sale of salt.

  • This was seen as a tactical move by Gandhiji to mobilise wider discontent against British rule. However, the British Raj failed to understand the significance of the action.
  • On 12 March 1930, Gandhiji began walking towards the ocean, making himself a criminal in the eyes of the law.
  • Parallel salt marches were being conducted in other parts of India, and the rulers responded by detaining dissenters.
  • In the wake of the Salt March, nearly 60,000 Indians were arrested, including Gandhiji himself.
  • The progress of Gandhiji’s march can be traced from secret reports filed by police officials to monitor his movements.
  • These reports reproduce speeches he gave at villages en route, calling upon local officials to renounce government employment and join the freedom struggle.
  • In one village, Gandhiji told the upper castes that for Swaraj to be achieved, they must unite Hindus, Muslims, Parsis, and Sikhs.
  • The American news magazine, Time, initially scorned Gandhiji’s appearance and scepticism about his physical abilities.
  • However, within a week, Time changed its mind, realizing the massive popularity following the march had garnered and saluting Gandhiji as a “Saint” and “Statesman,” using “Christian acts as a weapon against men with Christian beliefs.”

Significance of Dandi March

The Salt March was a significant event that brought Mahatma Gandhi to world attention, as it was the first nationalist activity in which women participated in large numbers.

  • It also forced the British government to realize that their Raj would not last forever and that they would have to devolve some power to the Indians.
  • To achieve this, the British government convened a series of “Round Table Conferences” in London, which led to the Gandhi-Irwin Pact, which called off civil disobedience, released all prisoners, and allowed salt manufacture along the coast.
  • However, the conference was inconclusive, and Gandhiji returned to India and resumed civil disobedience.
  • In 1935, a new Government of India Act was proposed, and the Congress won a comprehensive victory in an election held based on a restricted franchise.
  • In September 1939, the Second World War broke out, and Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru promised Congress support to the war effort if the British promised India independence once hostilities ended. However, the offer was refused, and the Congress ministries resigned in protest.
  • The political landscape became complicated, with the Congress, Muslim League, and British all-party government struggling for control.
  • In 1942, Churchill sent Sir Stafford Cripps to India to try and forge a compromise with Gandhiji and the Congress, but talks broke down when the Congress insisted that the Viceroy had to appoint an Indian as the Defence Member of his Executive Council.

The Salt March was notable for at least three reasons. First, it was this event that first brought Mahatma Gandhi to world attention.

  • The march was widely covered by the European and American press. Second, it was the first nationalist activity in which women participated in large numbers.
  • The socialist activist Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay had persuaded Gandhiji not to restrict the protests to men alone.
  • Kamaladevi was herself one of the numerous women who courted arrest by breaking the salt or liquor laws.
  • Third, and perhaps most significant, it was the Salt March that forced upon the British the realisation that their Raj would not last forever and that they would have to devolve some power to the Indians.
  • To that end, the British government convened a series of “Round Table Conferences” in London. The first meeting was held in November 1930, but without the pre-eminent political leader in India, thus rendering it an exercise in futility.
  • Gandhiji was released from jail in January 1931 and the following month had several long meetings with the Viceroy.
  • These culminated in what was called the “Gandhi-Irwin Pact’, by the terms of which civil disobedience would be called off, all prisoners released, and salt manufacture allowed along the coast.
  • The pact was criticised by radical nationalists, for Gandhiji was unable to obtain from the Viceroy a commitment to political independence for Indians. he could obtain merely an assurance of talks towards that possible end.
  • A second Round Table Conference was held in London in the latter part of 1931. Here, Gandhiji represented the Congress.
  • However, his claims that his party represented all of India came under challenge from three parties: from the Muslim League, which claimed to stand for the interests of the Muslim minority; from the Princes.
  • The Conference in London was inconclusive, so Gandhiji returned to India and resumed civil disobedience. The new Viceroy, Lord Willingdon, was deeply unsympathetic to the Indian leader.
