Food processing is the preparation of food items from one or more ingredients to produce a consumable food that is either eaten directly like fried cocoyam or added to cooked meals like ketchup. Processed food can be seld to consumers both locally and abroad. There are different set of food products that can be processed from. Example are baking bread, chocolate, fruit juice processing, cashew nut processing, fried food, and manufacturing of an ice block. The processing of the food items is usually processed by machines, some of which are deep fryers, some cutters, some crushers and grinders etc. the kind of machine you need will depend on the type of food processing you wanted to do. To begin, you have to understand thoroughly the business landscape of whichever food processing faction you chose by carrying out a market research. You have to formulate a schedule; where you mark the time when your ingredients will be arriving. How many hour it will take you to process it, and how many hour it will take to hit the shelves.

MARKET RESEARCH It’s very crucial to know the level of demand for the process foods you are intending to produce. Provide samples of the products to be registered when notified by NAFDAC for laboratory analysis. Ensure all payments are made as at when due. Ensure all documents are complete and with the appropriate description to prevent unnecessary delays. Timelines Registration of food product not more than 90 days from acceptance of application. Registration of drug product not more than 120 days from acceptance of application. Variation of product registration takes not more than 60 days Compliance Directive A client is mandated to comply with Compliance Directive (CD) within 7 days of issuance. Note failure to comply with any CD issued by NAFDAC may be a basis for cancellation of the application and all delays of the client will not be counted within the 90 days for registration. Summary of Registration processes with timelines 1. Submission of Application – 0 days 2. Document Verification – 10 days 3. Facility Inspection/Sampling – 10 days for Food, 20 days for Drugs 4. Laboratory Analysis – 30 days for Food, 40 days for Drugs 5. Final Vetting – 10 days 6. Approval Meeting/Issuance of NAFDAC registration Number(Certificate of registration) – 20 days Pricing policy Getting your price right is the most important aspect. You must be certain that the mark-up is enough to cover all other expenses on your cost of production and profit margin It’s also advisable to allocate some future income to invest in new equipment and technology. It will also help to upgrade your labour-saving equipment to help you to reduce your unit costs. Your largest expenditure should be on raw materials and staff cost not on over-head cost To follow up your level of performance you could regularly look at the relationship between your raw materials costs and your turnover, and your direct labour costs and your turnover. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) says the US government has unveiled its new Global Food Security Strategy Country Plan for Nigeria. Mission Director Melissa Jones, who announced this at the “1st Post-harvest Connect Conference and Exhibition” in Abuja, said the plan was unveiled in March. Jones said the plan was in tandem with President Joe Biden’s commitment to improve food security in Nigeria.

The conference was organised by the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, and the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), among others. Jones said the new strategy prioritised the value chains of rice, maize and horticulture in Kaduna, Kano, Nasarawa, Plateau, Sokoto and Zamfara.

According to him, the programme builds on previous achievements and lessons learned; prioritises inclusive participation, value chain, climate adaptation and private sector engagement. The director said USAID looked forward to partnering with the Nigerian Government, specifically the NSPRI to advance the technology and infrastructure needed to reduce postharvest losses in Nigeria.

US unveils global food security strategy plan for Nigeria

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) says the U.S. government has unveiled its new Global Food Security Strategy Country Plan for Nigeria.

Melissa Jones , Mission Director, USAID, who disclosed this at the “1st Post-harvest Connect Conference and Exhibition” in Abuja, said the plan was unveiled in March.

Jones said the plan was in tandem with President Joe Biden’s commitment to improve food security in Nigeria.

The conference was organised by the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) and, the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), among others.

Jones said the new strategy prioritised the value chains of rice, maize, and horticulture in six states Kaduna, Kano, Nasarawa, Plateau, Sokoto and Zamfara.

According to him, the programme builds on previous achievements and lessons learned; and prioritises inclusive participation, value chain, climate adaptation and private sector engagement.

The director said USAID looked forward to partnering with the Nigerian Government specifically the NSPRI to advance the technology and infrastructure needed to reduce post-harvest losses in Nigeria.

Jones identified the conference as timely given the growing food insecurity coupled with a food price inflation rate of over 40 per cent and a rise in the overall cost of living.

He decried that the rise in the cost of living had brought untold hardship to millions of the populace who could not afford basic staples.

“Currently, Nigeria's post-harvest losses are almost 50 per cent for fresh produce.

“It is critical that we all come together to focus on ensuring that the hard work of farmers is not lost in post-harvest and passes to the consumers who are in need,” Jones said.

Prof. Garba Sharubutu , Executive Secretary, ARCN, identified one of the major problems in the country as concentrating all efforts on food production and neglecting post-harvest activities.

According to him, the conference is the beginning of sensitising the public, government and farmers to the need to actually look at post-harvest activities.

The theme of the conference was “Scaling Appropriate Post-harvest Solutions for Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security.’’

Ravi Jaipuria finalises succession plan for RJ Corp for children Varun and Devvyani

Master franchise company, RJ Corp, that runs PepsiCo’s second-largest bottling plant outside the US, Varun Beverages, and Devyani International that runs KFC, Pizza Hut and Costa Coffee outlets in India, is looking into the next generation to take on the mantle. Ravi Jaipuria, Chairman of the $3 billion-RJ Corp, formalising the succession plan, has given the food and beverages business to his son, Varun, while the daughter, Devyani, has been given charge of the healthcare and education side.

According to a report in the Economic Times, Ravi Jaipuria told the financial daily that the succession planning of the conglomerate has been established, including a roadmap for Varun and Devyani to take on strategic leadership roles. He added that the daily operations would be run by the professionals as usual.

He will remain the chairman of RJ Corp, as well as oversee growth, policies, expansion and diversification. The 70-year-old billionaire said that the framework was envisaged with stability and continuity, as well as the addition of fresh perspectives into new leadership. The succession plan allows his children, Varun and Devyani, to focus on the broader strategic initiatives and long-term vision.

Jaipuria said that the professional team will continue to be central to the strategy, and that the blend of professional management and strategic leadership is key to driving RJ Corp forward.

WHAT VARUN AND DEVYANI JAIPURIA WILL GET

Varun Jaipuria, 36, has been given charge of Varun Beverages and Devyani International. Varun Beverages and Devyani International, named after the siblings, are listed.

Devyani Jaipuria, 39, has got the healthcare businesses, including hospital chain Cocoon, Delhi Public Schools in Gurugram and Jaipur, along with DPS International School in Gurgaon and Dharav High School in Jaipur.

Varun Beverages bottles and distributes PepsiCo beverages like Pepsi, Mirinda, 7UP, Mountain Dew fizzy drinks, Sting energy drink, Tropicana juice, Slice juice, and Aquafina water. It has 45 manufacturing facilities and operates in nine countries, including South Africa, Morocco, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Devyani International runs KFC, Pizza Hut and has exclusive franchise of Costa Coffee, homegrown chain Vaango, and Food Street brand that runs food courts in malls, airports, highways and hospitals. It has its presence in Nepal, Nigeria and Thailand.

RJ Corp’s healthcare vertical includes Cryovia Biotech that provides umbilical cord blood stem collection, processing and storage. It operates in Thailand, Singapore, West Asia, Nepal, Vietnam and east Africa.

DPS, DPS International, Pravaah, Modern Montessori International London are part of its education vertical.
