Everything to Know About Prince Harry's Upcoming Memoir: 'I'm Writing This Not as the Prince'

"I'm writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become," the Duke of Sussex said of his memoir

Stephanie Petit is a Royals Editor, Writer and Reporter at PEOPLE.

Prince Harry 's forthcoming memoir promises to be an "intimate" and "heartfelt" look into the "experiences, adventures, losses, and life lessons that have helped shape him."

In July 2021, Penguin Random House announced that the Duke of Sussex was putting his life story — which will cover his childhood in the public eye and his military duty in Afghanistan to becoming a husband to Meghan Markle and father to son Archie , 3, and daughter Lilibet , 1 — into a book.

"I'm writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become," Prince Harry , now 38, said in a statement. "I've worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story — the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned — I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think."

He continued, "I'm deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I've learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a firsthand account of my life that's accurate and wholly truthful."

When is Prince Harry 's book coming out?

Penguin Random House initially announced that Harry's memoir would be released in late 2022. In October 2022, however, the publisher shared the official release date : January 10, 2023.

What is Prince Harry 's memoir called?

Penguin Random House's October 2022 announcement also included the title and cover photo of the book. It's titled Spare , a nod to Prince Harry's former position within the royal family. As the second-born son of then- Prince Charles and Princess Diana , he was often referred to as the spare to the heir Prince William , his older brother. (Currently, the Duke of Sussex is fifth in the line of succession, following Prince William's three children.)

The publisher went on to note that Spare takes "readers immediately back to one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother's coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror."

"As Diana, Princess of Wales was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling — and how their lives would play out from that point on," Penguin Random House said.

How much money will Prince Harry make from his memoir?

Proceeds from the book and audiobook are expected to be donated to charity.

During a surprise appearance at an August 2021 polo match benefiting Sentebale in Aspen, Colorado, the Duke of Sussex announced that he has committed $1.5 million of the proceeds from his forthcoming memoir to the charity. Harry co-founded Sentebale in 2006 with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho to help children affected by HIV in Africa.

"This is one of several donations I plan to make to charitable organizations, and I'm grateful to be able to give back in this way for the children and communities who gravely need it," he said in a statement.

According to the official website for Spare , Prince Harry will also give £300,000 to WellChild. He has been a patron of the organization that works to support seriously ill children and their families since 2007, and Meghan joined him at the annual awards in 2018 and 2019 .

Did the royal family know about Prince Harry 's book?

While Prince Harry did not have to ask his grandmother Queen Elizabeth for permission to write his memoir, he did give the royal family a heads-up.

Harry spoke privately with the royal family regarding the book's publication, a spokesperson told PEOPLE last year. The spokesperson added that Harry would not be expected to obtain permission from Buckingham Palace for the project.

Buckingham Palace declined to comment, telling PEOPLE at the time: "Any clarification about the book would be a question for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex."

How will Prince Harry promote the book?

In early January 2023, it was announced that Prince Harry sat down for two interviews that will air on Jan. 8, two days before the memoir's release. Both the British outlet ITV and CBS News' 60 Minutes shared portions of their interviews with the Duke of Sussex.

"It never needed to be this way," Harry told ITV's Tom Bradby in a preview. He went on to refer to "the leaking and the planting" of stories in the British press before telling Bradby, "I want a family, not an institution."

In an interview with Anderson Cooper for 60 Minutes , Harry expanded on allegations of "leakings" in the media and how negative stories have affected him and Meghan. He also told Cooper why he's addressing these matters publicly.

"Every single time I tried to do it privately, there have been briefings and leakings and planting of stories against me and my wife," Prince Harry said. "You know, the family motto is 'never complain, never explain' … it's just a motto and it doesn't really … hold."

Have other royals written memoirs?

Prince Harry isn't the first member of the royal family to share his story. Edward, Duke of Windsor — who was Queen Elizabeth 's uncle and had been coronated King Edward VIII before abdicating the throne in 1936 so he could marry American Wallis Simpson — produced a ghost-written biography titled A King's Story: The Memoirs of the Duke of Windsor in 1951.

The memoir recalled his royal upbringing and schooling, leading up to falling in love with the American divorcée and ultimately giving up the position as monarch.

What will Prince Harry write about in the book?

Harry promised a "firsthand account of my life that's accurate and wholly truthful." According to his publishers, the book will cover his lifetime in the public eye from childhood to the present day, including his dedication to service, the military duty that twice took him to the frontlines of Afghanistan and the joy he has found in being a husband and father.

" Prince Harry will offer an honest and captivating personal portrait, one that shows readers that behind everything they think they know lies an inspiring, courageous, and uplifting human story," Penguin Random House said in a statement about the memoir, which is being touted as "the definitive account" of the Duke of Sussex's life.

" Prince Harry has harnessed his extraordinary life experience as a prince, a soldier, and a knowledgeable advocate for social issues, establishing himself as a global leader recognized for his courage and openness. It is for that reason we're excited to publish his honest and moving story," Markus Dohle, CEO of Penguin Random House, said.

Prince Harry and Meghan relocated their family to the Duchess of Sussex's home state of California in 2020 after stepping back from their roles as working royals. Since then, there have been tensions between the couple and members of the royal family. Meghan and Prince Harry spoke about these issues during a March 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey , where they revealed there were "concerns and conversations" about what Archie's skin color would be before he was born as well as claims that Meghan didn't receive the mental health help she needed when she was feeling suicidal. In the same interview, Harry said that father Prince Charles had "stopped taking my calls."

Buckingham Palace responded to the interview with a statement: "The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members."

Prince Harry and Meghan returned to the U.K. together in April 2022 to visit the Queen en route to Harry's Invictus Games in the Netherlands. They returned in June to participate in the monarch's Platinum Jubilee weekend, attending Trooping the Colour and a service of thanksgiving.

However, the couple noticeably didn't publicly cross paths with any of the senior royals, including Harry's father, Prince Charles , and brother, Prince William . ( Prince Charles later announced that he had a "very emotional" first meeting with his granddaughter, Lilibet, during the trip.)

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were in Europe for a series of events with longstanding charities when Queen Elizabeth died on Sept. 8, 2022. They remained in the U.K. to attend services to honor Harry's grandmother, including her state funeral and committal service on Sept. 19 before returning home to California.

In December 2022, the couple's docuseries Harry & Meghan was released on Netflix. The show touched on their tensions with Prince Harry 's family, including inside the Sandringham Summit shortly after they announced their decision to step back as working royals.

Harry said, "It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me, and my father say things that simply weren't true and my grandmother quietly sit there and sort of take it all in."

Harry S. Truman

The 33rd President of the United States

The biography for President Truman and past presidents is courtesy of the White House Historical Association.

During his few weeks as Vice President, Harry Truman scarcely saw President Franklin Roosevelt, and received no briefing on the development of the atomic bomb or the unfolding difficulties with Soviet Russia. Suddenly these and a host of other wartime problems became Truman’s to solve when, on April 12, 1945, he became America’s 33rd President.

During his few weeks as Vice President, Harry S. Truman scarcely saw President Roosevelt, and received no briefing on the development of the atomic bomb or the unfolding difficulties with Soviet Russia. Suddenly these and a host of other wartime problems became Truman’s to solve when, on April 12, 1945, he became President. He told reporters, “I felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me.”

Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri, in 1884. He grew up in Independence, and for 12 years prospered as a Missouri farmer.

He went to France during World War I as a captain in the Field Artillery. Returning, he married Elizabeth Virginia Wallace, and opened a haberdashery in Kansas City.

Active in the Democratic Party, Truman was elected a judge of the Jackson County Court (an administrative position) in 1922. He became a Senator in 1934. During World War II he headed the Senate war investigating committee, checking into waste and corruption and saving perhaps as much as 15 billion dollars.

As President, Truman made some of the most crucial decisions in history. Soon after V-E Day, the war against Japan had reached its final stage. An urgent plea to Japan to surrender was rejected. Truman, after consultations with his advisers, ordered atomic bombs dropped on cities devoted to war work. Two were Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japanese surrender quickly followed.

In June 1945 Truman witnessed the signing of the charter of the United Nations, hopefully established to preserve peace.

Thus far, he had followed his predecessor’s policies, but he soon developed his own. He presented to Congress a 21-point program, proposing the expansion of Social Security, a full-employment program, a permanent Fair Employment Practices Act, and public housing and slum clearance. The program, Truman wrote, “symbolizes for me my assumption of the office of President in my own right.” It became known as the Fair Deal.

Dangers and crises marked the foreign scene as Truman campaigned successfully in 1948. In foreign affairs he was already providing his most effective leadership.

In 1947 as the Soviet Union pressured Turkey and, through guerrillas, threatened to take over Greece, he asked Congress to aid the two countries, enunciating the program that bears his name–the Truman Doctrine. The Marshall Plan, named for his Secretary of State, stimulated spectacular economic recovery in war-torn western Europe.

When the Russians blockaded the western sectors of Berlin in 1948, Truman created a massive airlift to supply Berliners until the Russians backed down. Meanwhile, he was negotiating a military alliance to protect Western nations, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, established in 1949.

In June 1950, when the Communist government of North Korea attacked South Korea, Truman conferred promptly with his military advisers. There was, he wrote, “complete, almost unspoken acceptance on the part of everyone that whatever had to be done to meet this aggression had to be done. There was no suggestion from anyone that either the United Nations or the United States could back away from it.”

A long, discouraging struggle ensued as U.N. forces held a line above the old boundary of South Korea. Truman kept the war a limited one, rather than risk a major conflict with China and perhaps Russia.

Deciding not to run again, he retired to Independence; at age 88, he died December 26, 1972, after a stubborn fight for life.

Harry Houdini

Harry Houdini

(1874-1926)

Who Was Harry Houdini?

Fascinated with magic from a young age, Harry Houdini began performing and drew attention for his daring feats of escape. In 1893, he married Wilhelmina Rahner, who became his onstage partner as well. Houdini continued performing escape acts until his death, on October 31, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan.

Houdini was born Erich Weisz on March 24, 1874, in Budapest, Hungary. One of seven children born to a Jewish rabbi and his wife, Weisz moved with his family as a child to Appleton, Wisconsin, where he later claimed he was born. When he was 13, Weisz moved with his father to New York City, taking on odd jobs and living in a boarding house before the rest of the family joined them. It was there that he became interested in trapeze arts.

In 1894, Weisz launched his career as a professional magician and renamed himself Harry Houdini, the first name being a derivative of his childhood nickname, "Ehrie," and the last an homage to the great French magician Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin. (Although he later wrote The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin , a study that set out to debunk Houdin’s skill.) Though his magic met with little success, he soon drew attention for his feats of escape using handcuffs. In 1893, he married fellow performer Wilhelmina Beatrice Rahner, who would serve as Houdini's lifelong stage assistant under the name Beatrice "Bess" Houdini.

Commercial Success

In 1899, Houdini's act caught the attention of Martin Beck, an entertainment manager who soon got him booked at some of the best vaudeville venues in the country, followed by a tour of Europe. Houdini's feats would involve the local police, who would strip search him, place him in shackles and lock him in their jails. The show was a huge sensation, and he soon became the highest-paid performer in American vaudeville.

Houdini continued his act in the United States in the early 1900s, constantly upping the ante from handcuffs and straightjackets to locked, water-filled tanks and nailed packing crates. He was able to escape because of both his uncanny strength and his equally uncanny ability to pick locks. In 1912, his act reached its pinnacle, the Chinese Water Torture Cell, which would be the hallmark of his career. In it, Houdini was suspended by his feet and lowered upside-down in a locked glass cabinet filled with water, requiring him to hold his breath for more than three minutes to escape. The performance was so daring and such a crowd-pleaser that it remained in his act until his death in 1926.

Exploits Outside of Magic

Houdini's wealth allowed him to indulge in other passions, such as aviation and film. He purchased his first plane in 1909 and set out to become the first person to man a controlled power flight over Australia in 1910. While he did it after a few failed attempts, it later was revealed that Houdini was likely beaten to the punch by just a few months by a Capt. Colin Defries, who made a short flight in December 1909.

Houdini also launched a movie career, releasing his first film in 1901, Merveilleux Exploits du Célébre Houdini Paris , which documented his escapes. He starred in several subsequent films, including The Master Mystery , The Grim Game and Terror Island . In New York, he started his own production company, Houdini Picture Corporation, and a film lab called The Film Development Corporation, but neither was a success. In 1923, Houdini became president of Martinka & Co., America's oldest magic company.

Houdini's publishing career didn't end with his literary takedown of Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin, either, as he later wrote Miracle Mongers and Their Methods (1920) and A Magician Among the Spirits (1924).

Harry Houdini Death

Though there are mixed reports as to the cause of Houdini's death, it is certain that he suffered from acute appendicitis. Whether his demise was caused by a McGill University student who was testing his will by punching him in the stomach (with permission) or by poison from a band of angry Spiritualists is unknown. What is known is that he died of peritonitis from a ruptured appendix on October 31, 1926, at the age of 52, in Detroit, Michigan.

After his death, Houdini's props and effects were used by his brother Theodore Hardeen, who eventually sold them to the magician and collector Sidney H. Radner. Much of the collection could be seen at the Houdini Museum in Appleton, Wisconsin, until Radner auctioned it off in 2004. Most of the prized pieces, including the Water Torture Cell, went to magician David Copperfield.
