One  work-from-home job loved by many in my community is contracting as an online test grader. In this position, you are working online grading tests, essays, and other papers. In many cases, these essays are submitted as part of standardized tests like the ACT or SAT. In some cases, they are in conjunction with Engish as a Second Language, or ESL , studies.

To qualify for many of these positions, you often need a bachelor’s degree. Some companies allow that degree to be in any subject. Others may be looking for specific degrees like English. Make sure you read through the company’s current job openings for specifics.

Online grading work opportunities are seasonal in most cases. We see many companies hiring in the fall and spring as this is when most standardized testing is done. That being said, don’t be afraid to check for openings in the off-season as well. And once you are accepted as an online scorer, most companies will invite you back year after year provided you do a good job and meet the workload requirements.

8 Legit Online Grading Jobs

1. measurement, inc..

Measurement, Inc. is one of the most popular scoring jobs with my readers. They require a bachelor’s degree in any subject. Their projects include test items in English Language Arts, mathematics, science, and other areas.

For most remote positions with this company, they do expect you to work Monday through Friday for the duration of your temporary contract. Their busy season is March through June. Available hours may vary by project.

Onsite positions are usually open year-round. Hiring for remote work is typically done from November through March. Openings were listed on the site at the time of writing this post.

Pearson is a well-known name in the learning community. They hire tutors , at-home test developers, online test scorers, and more. The company was named as a Top 100 Company with Remote Jobs by FlexJobs  and they have a solid review rating on Glassdoor of 3.6 out of 5 stars.

Opportunities vary throughout the year and some may be  location-specific . Most positions are temporary and project-based. A bachelor’s degree is required.

One of their most recent scoring openings was for an edTPA Scorer. This particular test makes sure new teachers are ready for the classroom. This was a more specialized scorer job and required not only a bachelor’s degree but also teaching experience or experience working with teachers.

You can often find Pearson’s most recent needs and requirements on FlexJobs .

Educational Testing Service, or ETS, provides scoring and test development for a variety of tests from student leader proficiency tests to high school equivalency exams (examples: Pravis, GRE, TOEFL.) As such, the requirements can vary greatly for each position. Some positions require a bachelor’s degree. Some require a Master’s. Some require applicants to possess a current teaching certificate while others do not.

4. Write Score

The Write Score site states that orientation for their scoring season will begin in late July to early August though positions are available throughout the year.

Unlike other companies, Write Score only requires a two-year degree and the ability to pass their qualifying test. They do accept resumes for their waitlist and applicants are contacted as needed.

ACT hires Readers to read and score student papers for the ACT Writing Test. This is an opportunity to read and score anytime and from any personal computer.

The site states this is performance-based work. Your earnings will depend on the accuracy and number of essays scored. The company does say Readers can earn $12 per hour or more.

To qualify, you will need a bachelor’s degree or higher, reside in the U.S., and have current teaching experience. Teaching English to high school students (junior and senior level) is preferred.

6. Creative English Solutions

Creative English Solutions, or CES, provides evaluations for students wishing to take the TOEFL, Testing of English as a Foreign Language, and TOEIC, Test of English for International Communication. As such, applicants must be native English speakers and possess a University degree.

Positions at CES offer a lot of flexibility. Though they do ask for a commitment of at least 10 hours per week, Evaluators can accept and decline assignments as they wish and on their own schedule.

In addition to hiring Evaluators, CES also hires freelance writers and voice actors.

7. Literably

Literably is a little different in that their scorers evaluate oral recordings of elementary students. Transcriptionists listen to student audio recordings and transcribe errors.

This position does not require any experience or special degrees. You simply need to pass their sample tasks. As with most transcription jobs, pay is based on performance, speed, and accuracy.

This is a flexible position and you can set your own hours.

8. ALTA Language Services

If you possess native fluency in another language, ALTA Language Services currently has several testing evaluator positions available. These are typically on-demand, part-time positions.

A degree is required, as is a minimum English proficiency level of a 2+/2+ on the ILR proficiency scale. As with most companies in this industry, training is required and paid.

At the end of the day, you aren’t going to get rich as an online test grader. At the time of writing this post, most positions offer average pay of $10 to $13 per hour. That being said, it can be flexible, fulfilling work at home for the right person. Most people report being happy with these positions. The biggest complaint is often that the work isn’t available year-round, but many consider it a nice supplemental income source.

  • Conducts recreational activities form the evidence base program with the goals of teaching decision making, improving physical fitness, offering leisure options and teaching social skills.
  • Counsel and instructs youth in the habits of daily living and social routines.
  • Oversees/supervise the part-time recreational workers.
  • Estimates materials needed for inventory and specific areas, including cost.
  • Instructs youth through lectures and demonstrations of the method and techniques.
  • Plan and coordinates a comprehensive evidence base program for the facility population.
  • Maintains daily records of service delivery in a recreation and leisure log books.
  • Identifies staff development and training needs and ensures that training is provided.
  • Coordinates activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities and directing the work of the Recreation Worker (if applicable).
  • Oversees the recreation and leisure program to ensure compliance with DJJ policies.
  • Ensure that coverage is in place to deliver recreation and leisure to all youth daily.
  • Participate in the interview and selection process of recreation staff.
  • Communicates regularly with facility HR staff on any recreation staff vacancy.
  • Conducts rounds (dorm/housing units) to ensure youth on Isolation & Protective Custody are provided services as required.
  • Develop monthly and out of school recreation & leisure schedules.
  • Responsible for preparing requisition for recreation and leisure supplies (replacing supplies as needed).
  • Conduct quarterly inventories of the recreation and leisure supplies.
  • Assist with PBIS events and activities (when applicable).
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Conduct monthly recreation staff meetings
  • Attend facility managing team meetings as needed to aid in recreation support of the youth (special needs)
  • Assist with facility accreditation process in the area of recreation services (when applicable).

  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate degree in area of assignment from an accredited college or university
  • OR Vocational/Technical degree in area of assignment from accredited college AND One year of experience in the area of assignment
  • OR One year of experience required at the lower level Practical Instructor 1 (EDT010) or position equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess two or more of the following:

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or University in the related field.
  • Experience in conducting structured recreational activities with the goals of teaching, decision making and improving physical fitness.

How to prioritize tasks: 10 task prioritization techniques

Use these task prioritization techniques to help you identify your most important work..

There's never enough time to do everything you want to do. It's a universal problem. And we all accept that fact and live with its reality until the worst-case scenario rears its ugly head: there's not enough time to do everything you have to do.

When everything on your to-do list feels like it's of crucial importance (or when someone you answer to feels that way), use one or more of these prioritization techniques to help you identify your most important task and get work done.

What is a prioritization technique?

A prioritization technique helps you make informed decisions about the order you should complete your tasks based on different factors like their importance and due dates. With a list of prioritized tasks in hand, you have a shield to respectfully push back against unnecessary meeting invites and last-minute requests. 

For example, when stakeholders would approach my teammates with "urgent" requests, we would show them our prioritized task list and ask, "What should we cut in order to accommodate this request?" After seeing the importance of the other things on the list, urgent requests often suddenly became much less urgent.

But prioritization techniques aren't limited to regaining control over workplace tasks. They're also useful for managing competing priorities from your family, friends, and even that part of your brain that's always on the lookout for side projects.

1. Priority matrix

The priority matrix technique consists of distributing your tasks across a four-quadrant matrix like the one shown below. The x-axis represents one value, and the y-axis represents another. Each quadrant, then, represents priority based on the defined values.

There are infinite ways you could organize your priority matrix. Here are popular priority matrix examples to get you started.

Eisenhower matrix

With the Eisenhower matrix, the x-axis represents urgency while the y-axis represents importance , leaving you with the following categories (from the top-left going clockwise):

Important but not urgent tasks are lower priorities that you should add to your to-do list for later.

Important and urgent tasks are your top priorities.

Urgent but not important tasks are ones that must get done but can be delegated to someone else. 

Not urgent or important tasks are probably unnecessary distractions. 

To use it, evaluate each task based on its urgency and importance, and then place the task in the corresponding quadrant.

By placing each task on your list into a quadrant on the Eisenhower Matrix, you can determine what needs to be done now, what you can save for later, what's worth delegating, and what you can scratch out altogether.

Impact effort matrix 

In the impact-effort matrix, the x-axis represents impact, and the y-axis represents effort . So you'll have a matrix with the following quadrants (from top-left going clockwise):

High effort, low impact 

High effort, high impact 

Low effort, high impact 

Low effort, low impact 

To distribute your tasks accordingly, evaluate how much effort each one will take and the impact completing it will have. Any tasks in your Low effort, high impact quadrant are your top priorities, followed by ones in your High effort, high impact quadrants.

If you have a lot of tasks in these two quadrants, consider working on one or two from your Low effort, high impact quadrant. The sense of accomplishment from checking off these quick wins might give you that much-needed boost to tackle the rest.

Cost value matrix 

In the cost-value matrix, the x-axis represents cost, and the y-axis represents value , leaving you with the following groupings (from top-left going clockwise): 

High value, low cost

High value, high cost 

Low value, high cost

Evaluate how much your task will cost (in terms of time) and the value it'll provide. Tasks in your High value, low cost quadrant are your quick wins, while ones in your Low value, high cost are tasks you should probably avoid. 

With any of the matrix models above, you can sketch them out on paper or in a spreadsheet. Or you can use an app that has built-in features for building priority matrices, like TickTick .

2. MoSCoW prioritization method 

The MoSCoW method is a simple technique for prioritizing tasks where you assign every task on your to-do list to one of four categories:

M – Must do : M tasks are things you absolutely have to do.

S – Should do : S tasks are things you should do, but they're a lower priority than M tasks.

C – Could do : C tasks are nice-to-dos. You'd like to do them, but if you don't, it's probably not a big deal.

W – Won't do : W tasks are things that just aren't worth doing.

Note: If you have a lot of tasks that need delegation, the MoSCow method isn't for you. Jump to the ABCDE method for a better-suited alternative technique. 

After you've assigned each task to a category, delete your W tasks. Breathe a sigh of relief at how much shorter your task list is now. Then get to work. Focus first on M tasks, followed by S tasks, and if you have time, C tasks. 

By working on your list from the top down, you can ensure that you're always working on your highest-priority tasks.

For a seamless way to visualize and organize your tasks, try using a Kanban app like Trello or KanbanFlow . Create a list of unsorted tasks, and then drag each task into the appropriate category. You can also drag and drop tasks up and down within lists to specify the order in which you want to work on them.

But for the MoSCoW method to really work, you have to make sure all your tasks actually get added to your board, so you can categorize them. 3. ABCDE method

The ABCDE method comes from Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy. Similar to the MoSCoW prioritization technique, the ABCDE method gets you to assign each task on your list into a category:

A tasks are things you must do.

B tasks are things you should do.

C tasks are nice-to-dos.

D tasks are tasks you should delegate to someone else.

E tasks are tasks you should eliminate.

The ABCDE method expands on the MoSCoW method by prioritizing tasks you need to do and identifying the ones that can be done by someone else. 

Kanban apps also work really well for this technique. You'll have one source list for all your tasks followed by additional lists to contain A , B , C , D , and E tasks. Drag and drop tasks from the source list into the appropriate category, then get started on your A tasks.

4. Scrum prioritization

Scrum prioritization (also referred to as Agile prioritization ) is a prioritization method that relies on ordering your tasks based on both priority and sequence.  This technique works particularly well when you have to take sequence into account.

For example, say your highest priority task is to re-tile your bathroom floor. However, you know that you also need to have plumbers run new pipes in your bathroom, and they'll have to cut into the floor to do so. Getting new pipes run may be a lower priority, but since it will impact your highest-priority task of re-tiling the floor, it needs to be completed first.

In Scrum prioritization, you evaluate each task on your list using three criteria:

How important is this task?

How important is it compared to the other tasks on this list?

Is any other task dependent on this task?

Then, using the answers to those questions, you assign each a unique number from one to n (where n is the total number of tasks on your list). 

Scrum prioritization works well on its own, but it also pairs really well with other techniques like the MoSCoW or ABCDE method. After categorizing your tasks by priority (as M , C , and W or A , B , and C ), you can begin sequencing the tasks in order of how you plan to complete them, keeping in mind any task dependencies that might impact that order.

Any to-do list app that allows for drag-and-drop ordering works well for Scrum prioritization. But if you're organizing tasks with a lot of dependencies, project management apps like Jira and Asana provide a better way to visualize your sequenced tasks. 

5. Bubble sort method

The Bubble sort method is an effective way to answer the question, "How important is this task compared to other tasks on this list?" It's especially useful if you're suffering from the everything-is-urgent problem. 

Start with a horizontal grid and assign each task to a cell. 

Step one of the bubble sort prioritization technique: individual tasks are assigned to unique cells across a horizontal grid.

Then, take the first two tasks and evaluate them against each other by asking, "Which task is more important?"

Step two of the bubble sort prioritization technique: compare the first two tasks in the two far-left cells.

Whichever task from the previous step is most important gets moved to the left. In the example below, Task 2 is more important than Task 1 , so the two tasks switch places.

Step three of the Bubble sort prioritization technique: the most important task between two gets moved to the left.

Then compare the next two tasks. Which is more important? The more important task gets moved one cell to the left.

Step four of the bubble sort prioritization technique: compare the next two tasks.

Continue this process until you get to the end of the list. Then repeat the process from the beginning. Continue repeating the exercise until every task is to the left of a less-important task. Your priorities are now listed from left to right.

There's no specific tool designed for the Bubble sort method, but you can easily use a Kanban, to-do list, or project management app for this. The only difference is that your sets of tasks will run from top-to-bottom instead of left-to-right.

6. Most Important Task (MIT) method

Most Important Task (MIT) is an exceptionally simple prioritization method popularized by Leo Babauta . Instead of prioritizing tasks from your entire to-do list, start every morning by picking one to three MITs—things that you must do that day.

Pick at least one MIT each day that's related to your goals. This way, you're doing something daily to help you reach your goals. And while you'll most likely complete more in a day than only your MITs, selecting your MITs in the morning and setting a deadline ensures you're dedicating time every day to working on important, high-priority tasks.

The nice thing about MIT is that you don't technically even need a to-do list to use the technique. But if you want to keep your MIT top of mind, try the free Chrome extension Momentum . It prompts you to choose a focus for the day the first time you open Chrome, and then it shows you that focus each time you open a new browser tab.

Start every day on the right foot. Here are 12 morning and evening routines you can implement to create more productive days. 

7. The Ivy Lee method

The Ivy Lee Method is simple (and similar to the MIT method):

At the end of every workday, choose the six most important tasks on your list to work on tomorrow.

Then, order those six tasks in terms of priority.

When you get to work the next day, work on task number one until it's complete.

Tackle the rest of your list in the same way.

Continue until all six tasks are complete, and repeat the process every single day.

Any to-do list, Kanban, or project management app works well for the Ivy Lee method. But if you find that you're struggling to complete your prioritized tasks because of meetings and other distractions, consider building your to-do list in a time-blocking app . This way, you can schedule time for that work directly in your calendar, making you unavailable for meetings that probably could've been an email .

8. 1-3-9 prioritization technique

The 1-3-9 prioritization technique encourages you to focus on important tasks, but it also gives you a way to prioritize the less important tasks you'll inevitably need to work on. It's like a blend of the MoSCoW, MIT, and Ivy Lee methods. 

Every day, you plan to complete 13 tasks:

one critical task (like an M task from MoSCoW)

three important tasks (like S from MoSCoW)

nine nice-to-do tasks (like C from MoSCoW)

You could even combine the 1-3-9 technique with an Eisenhower matrix, leaving you with one task in the Important and urgent quadrant, three in the Important but not urgent quadrant, and nine in the Urgent but not important quadrant.

Order your lists of three and nine tasks in terms of priority. Then work on and complete your one task, followed by your three tasks in order, and finally, your nine tasks in order.

In an ideal world, you'd be able to work only on your highest-priority, high-value tasks—but things rarely work out that way. The 1-3-9 method addresses that reality by giving you a way to make sure you're at least working on the most important of your less important tasks.

Any priority matrix app or Kanban app works well with the 1-3-9 prioritization technique. 

9. Two lists technique

Warren Buffett's Two lists technique is another really simple approach to prioritizing tasks.

First, you write down a list of 25 things you want to accomplish. When the list is complete, circle the five most important items on that list.

When you're finished, compile the results into two lists:

The first—containing the five tasks you circled—becomes your to-do list.

The second—containing the 20 tasks you didn't circle—becomes your don't-do (yet) list.

Focus your attention on completing all the tasks on your first list. Only then can you begin working on your second list.

The Two Lists technique is designed to be done on paper, but you can accomplish the same thing with any to-do list app that lets you move tasks from one list to another. Or, if you want to get really creative, turn your 25 goals into a doodle .

10. Pareto principle (80/20 rule)

The Pareto principle , also known as the 80/20 rule, states that 80%of consequences tend to come from 20%. For example, 80% of your impact at work comes from 20% of the tasks you do. 

Put another way, if you prioritize a small percentage of the right tasks, they can yield outsized effects. 

To put the 80/20 rule into practice, identify your 20% work and make those tasks your priority. There's no hard-and-fast rule baked into the Pareto principle for how to determine your 20% work, but you can draw on other strategies. For example, M tasks from the MoSCoW method or Low effort, high impact tasks from the effort-impact priority matrix. 

Bonus: How to prioritize tasks for teams

Many of the prioritization methods listed above are useful for prioritizing your daily tasks. But what if you're working on a larger scale? For example, a product team debating which features to roll out next, or a marketing team deciding how to divide their advertising budget across different campaigns. In those cases, here are a few prioritization methods to help your team identify and sequence those tasks:

How to pick the right task prioritization technique

Every technique on this list helps you achieve the same thing: ensuring that you're always working on your most important tasks. So, in the end, it doesn't matter which technique you use. It doesn't matter if you use multiple techniques. And it doesn't matter if you blend parts of the different techniques to make your own custom method.

What matters is that you pick something that makes sense and feels natural, and get to work.

Should you give job applicants an assignment during the interview process? Be thoughtful about the ask

Employers have to ask themselves whether they are willing to turn off a strong candidate by asking them to do additional work.

Hiring is a time-consuming and expensive endeavor. Companies need candidates who offer the right skills and experience for a given role, and who align with their organization’s vision and mission.

To find the best fit, many companies still lean on a strategy that continues to generate debate : the assignment. Some candidates believe their experience and interviews should give prospective employers enough information to determine whether they will fit the role. Employers have to ask themselves whether they are willing to turn off a strong candidate by asking them to do additional work.

Is the assignment valuable enough to the evaluation process that they cannot move someone forward without it? Sometimes it is—sometimes they help an employer decide between two strong candidates. And if they are necessary, how can employers make assignments fair and equitable for the candidate or candidates?

When done right, assignments help assess practical skills and problem-solving abilities, giving a clearer picture of a candidate beyond what their resume or interview reveals. But employers should be thoughtful about the ask. While it may make sense for roles that require specific technical expertise or creative thinking, it isn’t appropriate for all roles—so assignments should always be given with a clear reason for why they are needed.

Plus, they don’t just benefit the employer. For job seekers, an assignment during the interview process might also help them stand out from the competition. It can also offer a window into what their day-to-day in the new role might entail. Remember that the candidate should be interviewing the company, too. Having a test run of the work they’d be asked to do is a great way to see whether they believe the role is a fit.

However, there is a rift in how people perceive the assignment as part of the interview process. Workers today span many generations, each with unique values and expectations. Whereas older workers often prioritize stability and loyalty, younger millennials and Gen Zers are more focused on flexibility and work well-being, Indeed data shows .

This mindset impacts the amount of time and energy a candidate is willing to devote to each application. After multiple rounds of interviews and prep, taking on an in-depth assignment may feel like a bridge too far—especially if the expectations for the assignment are not clearly communicated ahead of time.

Some candidates are wary of providing free labor to a company that may use their work and not hire them. Hiring managers should be clear about how the work will be used. They may also consider offering compensation if the assignment requires more than a couple hours of someone’s time, or if they plan to use the work without hiring the candidate.

The key for early career candidates in particular is to ensure their time and efforts are respected. This is a win-win for employers: By providing clarity and transparency, they not only elicit the additional information they want from candidates, but they demonstrate that the organization is transparent and fair.

Equity is also imperative: Which candidates are being asked to complete assignments? Is the hiring team consistent in giving out assignments across ages, experience levels, and roles? There should always be a process and clear evaluation criteria in place to ensure fairness.

As we adapt to the rapidly evolving world of work, we must continue to think critically about each step in the hiring process. Candidate assignments can be a valuable tool, but only with appropriate respect for job seekers’ time and contributions.

With the right strategy, we can bridge the gap between generations in the workplace and build a hiring culture that values efficiency, talent, and integrity.

Checking in With an Airline Reporter

To cover the bustling world of aviation, Christine Chung considers the plights and predicaments of readers.

Christine Chung has a few rules when it comes to flying.

She never checks a bag, traveling exclusively with a carry-on. She flies as early in the day as possible, to avoid crowds and long security lines. And perhaps her most controversial take: She never arrives at an airport more than an hour and a half before her departure time, no matter where she’s flying.

“Growing up, my dad would always insist on us being at the airport four hours early,” she said in an interview. “It was always a stressful experience, and I remember thinking, even then, that air travel was so complicated. Now I probably don’t leave myself enough time.”

Ms. Chung, who covers airlines and consumer travel for The New York Times, joined the Travel section in March 2023 from the Express desk, where she reported breaking news. Her beat involves untangling the confusing rules and regulations of aviation, like passengers’ rights to refunds and what the grounding of Boeing Max 9 planes means for travelers.

In a recent conversation, she shared how she arrived at the travel beat and the questions she most often receives from readers. This interview has been edited.

Were you always interested in travel journalism?

I love traveling, but I’m not someone who, say, reads about the different types of planes or loves to plane-spot. I joined the Express desk in late 2021, and was looking for an opportunity to strengthen my feature writing skills. Reporting breaking news is super dynamic and fun, but I wanted to have time to delve more deeply into topics that interested me. On Express, you often write a story in a day. On Travel, you might have a couple of days or a week to work on a feature story. It’s a huge luxury to work with talented editors and have time to develop story ideas.

Do you travel often for your reporting?

I do. I recently went to Seattle to observe a flight attendant safety training with Alaska Airlines. On the Express desk, all of my reporting was by phone, which is an effective and fast way to interview sources. But one of the best parts of my job now is getting to visit places and conduct interviews in person.

How has your beat surprised you?

We have so many reporters at The Times whose beats also touch aviation, so there’s a lot of interesting collaboration. There’s a Washington angle on the recent Boeing news, which Mark Walker covers. He has written about what the Federal Aviation Administration is doing, the ongoing investigation and the lawsuits filed by passengers. The Business desk also covers travel, including air traffic control and airline finances . I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how we all work together to cover this beat effectively, and more thoroughly than one person ever could.

What’s your biggest challenge?

There is so much daily news about airlines that it can be overwhelming. The questions I try to ask myself when determining whether to cover a story are: What are passengers focusing on right now? What are people complaining about? In the past year, I’ve become better at noticing a trend early, seeing the bigger, underlying narrative and distilling that into a story.

What travel trends are you following?

I’m interested in all the moving parts that we don’t think about. For example, I’m really interested in baggage handling. Many bags are lost, though the baggage loss rate in the United States has been decreasing year to year. It’s a miracle how bag handlers and airlines achieve this. I would like to better understand air traffic control and all the levers that keep the aviation system moving nearly three million passengers a day in the United States. It’s a hugely complicated system.

I’m also interested in the broader, growing stratification of travel. Travel is becoming ever more luxurious for some people; it kind of mirrors the divisions in society.

What’s the most common question you receive from readers?

The Travel desk gets a lot of questions about things that went wrong for travelers, like “My flight’s been disrupted. What can I do about that? What are my rights?” I think the most confusing part of air travel for a lot of people is knowing their rights. It can be hard to get your money back from an airline when you don’t know what caused a flight delay or cancellation . It’s easy to feel disempowered .

You’ve written about upgraded airport lounges with amenities like caviar service and nap pods. I have to ask: Do you have a favorite airport?

I think we’re really lucky in New York. We are pretty well served by all the local airports. La Guardia Airport is stunning. It’s pretty amazing how that airport has gone from the bottom to one of the best. It’s home to some fantastic new lounges. I did travel through Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey recently. It has a new terminal and was such a breeze to get through security. It was delightful, which is a word I never thought I would use when talking about an airport.

Taking to the social media platform X recently, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese  said  that enough jobs had been created under Labor to fill 13 major sports stadiums combined, including the Adelaide Oval, the Optus Stadium in Perth and the MCG in Melbourne.

"You could even throw in another whole MCG for good measure," Mr Albanese said, before claiming: "That's 790,000 new jobs created. More than any first term government on record."

So, have 790,000 new jobs been created since Labor was elected, and is this a record for a first-term government?

RMIT ABC Fact Check investigates.

The verdict

There's more to the story than Mr Albanese's claim suggests.

In February of this year, there were an additional 789,700 employed people in Australia compared to when Labor came to power in May 2022.

This was indeed the largest such increase for a first-term government since 1966, the earliest year for which broadly comparable data was available.

However, experts told Fact Check that looking at the raw numbers alone was problematic, particularly since it ignored the role of population growth.

With population growth taken into account, the data reveals there was a greater increase in headline employment under Bob Hawke's first-term Labor government over a comparable (21-month) period.

The Hawke government also fared better during its early months on various other employment measures recommended by experts, such as overall hours worked, the rate of underemployment and the share of new jobs that were full-time.

And, importantly, experts stressed that governments cannot take sole credit for "creating" jobs.

Taking credit

At various times over the last year, Mr Albanese and other senior Labor figures have taken credit for creating more jobs than any first-term government on record.

In May 2023, for instance, Treasurer Jim Chalmers  told parliament  that "we have seen the fastest jobs growth of any new government on record … and the strongest wages growth in more than a decade".

"These have been defining features of a government dedicated to secure jobs and better pay for our people."

The next month, Mr Albanese  told ABC Radio  that Labor had "created more jobs on our watch than any new government in history".

In August 2023, the Assistant Minister for Competition, Charities and Treasury, Andrew Leigh,  claimed : "Our government has delivered half a million jobs, better jobs growth than any government on record over our first year."

And on March 19 of this year, Mr Albanese  posted to X : "We've created more new jobs than any first term government on record."

Most recently, in an April 3  opinion piece  published by the Hobart Mercury, Mr Albanese wrote that "more than 790,000 new jobs [had been] created since we came to office".

Source of the claim

Fact Check asked the prime minister's office to provide a source for Mr Albanese's "record" claim and received a response from a spokesman for Mr Chalmers.

"The comment is based on monthly labour force statistics from 1978 onwards and quarterly historical labour force statistics prior to 1978," the spokesman said.

These statistics reflect the results of the Labour Force Survey (LFS), conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

As Fact Check has noted in  previous   fact checks , the LFS provides data specifically relating to the number of people in employment, meaning it cannot account for people who hold more than one job.

The ABS  has stated  that although its employment estimates "are often misrepresented as the number of jobs", they in fact "provide a measure of … the number of people who have a job".

Bill Mitchell , the director of the Centre of Full Employment and Equity at the University of Newcastle, also noted the labour force data provided a net measure of employment rather than a count of new jobs created.

"[M]any jobs are created and destroyed each month, and the net outcome is the difference between those flows," he told Fact Check.

Regardless, five experts contacted by Fact Check said the labour force dataset was the most useful for assessing Mr Albanese's claim.

According to  Mark Wooden , an emeritus professor at the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research at the University of Melbourne, it "is widely recognised as the best source of information on employment levels and trends in Australia".

Where does the 'record' begin?

As noted by Mr Chalmers's spokesman, the LFS has been conducted since 1960,  originally on a quarterly basis , and then on a monthly basis since 1978.

Professor Mitchell cautioned against comparing quarterly and monthly figures.

"The problem is that the old quarterly data is not comparable to the monthly data, so trying to go back prior to February 1978 is fraught with problems and is unadvisable," he told Fact Check.

In an email, an ABS spokesman similarly said the quarterly and monthly figures "aren't strictly comparable".

But there was "also no major time series break" in 1978, he said, so the bureau was "okay [with] presenting graphs covering 1966 and onwards".

In  a 2012 article , the ABS said comparing data published prior to 1966 with later releases was problematic, "mainly because, prior to 1964, the LFS was run only in six state capital cities and data detail between 1960 and 1965 is fairly limited".

Jeff Borland , a professor of economics at the University of Melbourne, told Fact Check that looking at the data starting from 1966 was "as far [back] as is sensible".

Comparing first-term governments

Mr Albanese compared Labor's record to other "first term governments".

There have been seven of these since 1966,  elected under prime ministers :

Gough Whitlam (December 1972)

Malcolm Fraser (December 1975)

Bob Hawke (March 1983)

John Howard (March 1996)

Kevin Rudd (December 2007)

Tony Abbott (September 2013)

Anthony Albanese (May 2022)

At the time of Mr Albanese's claim, the  most recent labour force  data was for February of this year: 21 months after he was sworn in as prime minister.

Fact Check has analysed the same time frame for each of the previous first-term governments.

Only quarterly data is available for the Whitlam and Fraser governments. In these cases, Fact Check has examined the period starting from the reference month closest to when each prime minister was first sworn into office.

What the raw numbers show

Seasonally adjusted labour force data shows that there were 14,269,600 employed people in Australia in February 2024.

This represents an increase of 789,700 people compared to when the Albanese government came to power in May 2022, in line with the prime minister's claim.

The data also shows this was indeed the biggest nominal increase  to occur over the first 21 months of any first-term government since 1966.

The next-largest increases were recorded under the governments of Hawke (298,000 people), Abbott (252,800) and Rudd (227,900).

In percentage terms, the increase under Mr Albanese remains the largest since 1966, at 5.9 per cent, followed by that recorded under Mr Hawke, at 4.8 per cent.

What about population growth?

Notably, the above data does not take into account population growth, which Professor Borland said provided "an advantage to later governments" when it came to absolute increases in employment.

Professor Wooden noted that the labour force was "rapidly growing due to immigration" which made "looking at the absolute number of jobs … a little misguided".

Immigration is "a lever that the federal government can pull that will cause employment to quickly grow … since more people means more demand for goods and services", he said.

"But more people also means more people seeking work."

Professor Mitchell echoed this point, telling Fact Check that emphasising the change in raw numbers was "very misleading" because the population had grown "quite quickly in the recent period".

To "really assess the relative performance" of the labour market, he said, "one has to adjust for underlying population growth".

All three professors suggested looking at the employment-to-population ratio, published by the ABS as part of the labour force dataset.

According to the February data, that ratio rose by half a percentage point — from 63.7 per cent to 64.2 per cent — over the first 21 months of the Albanese government.

This was a better result than that recorded under five of the six previous first-term governments.

However, it was outpaced by growth during the first 21 months of the Hawke government, under which the employment-to-population ratio increased by 0.9 of a percentage point.

Comparing other 21-month periods

Ultimately, the above numbers reflect the narrow time period selected, which Professor Wooden said was one reason why "these sorts of comparisons are not very helpful".

"If I had chosen the last 21 months of the Morrison government, for example, we would find the employment-to-population ratio rising from 60.3 to 63.7; so by a massive 3.4 percentage points, and far more than the rise under Albanese," he said.

"So if the Albanese deserves credit for the improvement in employment under their period in office," Professor Wooden queried, "surely the previous Coalition [government] should be given big wraps for overseeing a remarkable recovery in employment?"

To illustrate the point, the charts below show changes in the employment-to-population ratio and total number of people in employment over rolling 21-month periods.

Beyond the headline data

While Mr Albanese's claim centred on total jobs, Alan Duncan, the director of the Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre at Curtin University, and Professor Mitchell said it was also worth considering other measures when assessing the relative performance of the jobs market.

According to labour force data on full-time and part-time status, for example, the rise in total employment over the Albanese government's first 21 months was driven primarily by full-time workers, who made up 56 per cent of the increase in people employed.

That was lower than the full-time share added under the first-term Hawke government (83.3 per cent), but higher than that of more recent governments.

(Equivalent data was not available for the Whitlam and Fraser governments.)

Professor Mitchell also pointed to the  underemployment rate , which measures, as a share of the labour force, the number of employed people seeking "more hours of work than they currently have".

The underemployment rate rose by 0.6 of a percentage point during the first 21 months of the Albanese government — again, beating out all but the Hawke government, which oversaw a drop of 0.8 percentage points.

Additionally, the ABS data shows that under the Albanese government the total number of hours worked each month increased by 4.8 per cent, the second greatest such increase after a 5.8 per cent boost under the Hawke government.

Do governments create jobs?

As for who gets credit for having "created" a record number of jobs, experts said there was more to it than governments often claim.

"No government (or PM) can take sole credit (or blame) for changes in aggregate employment levels", Professor Wooden said in an email.

"Government policies clearly do affect employment levels, but it is extremely difficult (if not impossible) to separate their effect from the multitude of other forces (both domestic and international) that influence the demand for and availability of workers."

According to Professor Duncan: "As a general rule, there tends to be much credit claimed by governments of all persuasions — and blame by opposition parties — for outcomes not entirely within the government's control."

He said that while the government was "free to claim they helped with Australia's employment growth", businesses "grow their employment base on the basis of many factors — some related to government policy, but some related to local and global demands, business development, investment decisions and the like."

Professor Mitchell agreed:

"The government does not create all the jobs that emerge in the economy," he said.

"Politicians are quick to claim success when employment is growing and are mute when it is not, but the reality is that most jobs are created in the private sector."

He added, however, that "the policy environment is crucial to how well the private sector is performing, and that is down to the government."

FactChecking Biden on Inflation, Other Claims

When President Joe Biden took office in January 2021, the U.S. annual rate of inflation was 1.4% — far from the 9% inflation Biden falsely said in a May 8 interview that he inherited. Inflation rose quickly in Biden’s first year, but it didn’t hit 9% until 17 months into his presidency.

Biden made that claim — and several others we’ve fact-checked before — in an interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett. While responding to Burnett’s question about voter concerns about the economy, Biden touted the economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“But no president’s had the run we’ve had in terms of creating jobs and bringing down inflation. It was 9% when I came to office, 9%,” Biden said .

He’s wrong about inflation, which, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, rose 1.4% year over year in January 2021, the month that Biden became president.

After that, inflation increased almost every month until reaching 9.1% in June 2022 – its highest level in about 40 years . From there, the annual rate of inflation trended down for a year, reaching 3% in June 2023. But it has since remained above 3%, and was at 3.5% for the 12 months ending in March, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A White House official told us that in the CNN interview Biden was conveying that factors contributing to the spike in inflation – such as global supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic – were already in place before Biden was sworn into office. High inflation was worse in some other countries, the official said.

Economists did tell us in June 2022 that price increases were inevitable as the economy opened back up after a shutdown period intended to slow the spread of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. They said increased consumer demand and spending combined with the limited production of various goods helped push prices up fast.

In the U.S., that spending surge was partly due to trillions of dollars in federal funding that were pumped into the economy during the pandemic, including three rounds of government stimulus checks distributed to qualifying households. Two of those stimulus payments were part of bills signed into law in 2020 by Biden’s predecessor, former President Donald Trump, while the other payment to most Americans was in the American Rescue Plan Act that Biden signed in March 2021.

Some analysts said that while the federal stimulus may have contributed to inflation, not providing that spending also could have negatively affected the economy.

Nevertheless, Biden did not tell Burnett that factors out of his control helped produce high inflation early in his term. Instead, he said he walked into the White House with inflation already at 9% – which was not the case.

Repeats on Jobs, COVID-19 and Tax Rates

Biden also repeated some claims we have already fact-checked:

Jobs. He misleadingly contrasted the job creation under his presidency with the job losses that occurred over former President Donald Trump’s term, losses that occurred once the COVID-19 pandemic hit. “He’s never succeeded in creating jobs and I have never failed,” Biden claimed. “I have created over 15 million jobs since I have been president, 15 million in three-and-three-quarters years.”

Trump did succeed in creating jobs. As we’ve written , employment was up during his term, until the economy lost 20.5 million jobs in April 2020, as pandemic containment measures led to business closures and layoffs. When Trump left office in January 2021, employment was still 9.4 million jobs below the February 2020 peak,  according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics . Under Biden, the economy has gained 15.4 million jobs.

‘Inject bleach.’ Biden again twisted Trump’s words, claiming his predecessor “would tell people, inject bleach,” during the COVID-19 pandemic. Trump suggested that scientists test the use of “very powerful light” and “disinfectant” in the body to kill the virus. But he didn’t tell people to do this themselves, nor did he say: “inject bleach.”

During an  April 2020 press briefing , a Department of Homeland Security official discussed research on the ways the coronavirus reacted on nonporous surfaces when exposed to heat, humidity, sunlight and disinfectant. In his remarks, Trump said: “And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute, one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning, because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it’d be interesting to check that.”

For the record, experts say it’s dangerous to inject disinfectants into the body.

Billionaire “tax rate”:  Biden repeated his misleading talking point that billionaires pay an 8.3% federal tax rate on average. The figure comes from a White House calculation that factors in earnings on unsold stock as income. When counting just taxable income, the wealthiest Americans — the top 0.1% of earners who have more than $4.4 million in expanded cash income — paid an average effective federal income tax rate of 24% in 2023,  according to  the Tax Policy Center.

Biden has proposed that those with wealth over $100 million  pay  a  25% minimum tax , as calculated on both standard income and unsold investment income combined. We wrote a detailed explanation of Biden’s claim last year.

Hasan Minhaj is ready to laugh about it all.

At the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival on Thursday, Minhaj hosted a showcase highlighting various comedians. At the end of the lineup was Ronny Chieng, who joked, “I’m surprised that Hasan’s able to do this show. I guess ‘cancelling’ is not what it used to be.”

The pair told the story of how they first met as “Daily Show” correspondents in 2015, at which point Minhaj brought up the hosting job. When Chieng first said the show’s name, Minhaj retorted, “A job you fucked me out of.”

“We’ve all failed in our lives, but have you ever failed so bad, you bring back Jon Stewart ?” he continued. “I saved a dying institution. You’re welcome.”

He was right. Stewart’s return has reinvigorated “The Daily Show,” quickly bringing the franchise to viewership heights it hadn’t reached since he left in 2015.

Minhaj is currently on a stand-up tour titled “Off With His Head,” with a special set to tape this summer. Chieng is on his “Love to Hate it” tour.

Lehi High School teacher hospitalized after classroom accident

A Lehi High School teacher was taken to a hospital Friday afternoon after being injured during a class assignment.

In a statement emailed to the Daily Herald, the Alpine School District called it “an unfortunate and tragic accident.” Officials did not specify exactly what led to the injury but confirmed that no students were hurt.

According to the district, the accident happened in a classroom in the school’s agriculture building, which is detached from the main campus that houses Career and Technical Education classrooms.

The Lehi police and fire departments responded to the school early Friday afternoon following the incident. The teacher was flown by medical helicopter to receive care. School district officials did not identify the teacher or provide information about their condition other than to say the male educator remains in the hospital.

The district said it notified parents of the incident and offered resources of support services and crisis counseling to students who are struggling with what they witnessed.

In its statement, the district said:

“We extend our deepest concern to the teacher and their family during this difficult time. We are grateful that no students were injured in the accident and we appreciate the swift and professional response from Lehi Fire and Police. We continue to work with our first responder partners to make sure our school community is safe and informed.”
