Essay on “A Hockey Match” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

A Hockey Match

Last Sunday I witnessed a very keenly contested hockey match between the   National College and the Government College. Large crowds of spectators gathered to witness the final match of the year. A match during the first half It was a brisk game from the very ‘start.   The center forwards of the National team pressed their opponents hard. At first, they seemed to carry everything before them. At one time they actually netted, but the referee gave the whistle for ‘foul’ play. Match after the interval. During the second half, the match was as brisk as before. But now there was a turn in the tide. The center-forwards of the Government   College fell upon the Nationals. But the latter defended their goal bravely. So with all their best efforts, the Government College failed to score a goal. It was a very exciting match. Both the teams played with vigour and enthusiasm. Since neither team could score a goal, the match ended in a draw.

Essay No. 2

I do not play hockey but I love to watch the game. And few occasions provide better hockey than the annual Sindhia Hockey Tournament at Gwalior.

Last Sunday I saw the final match of the Tournament. It was a sunny day – the best weather games. A large number of prominent people and hockey lovers had gathered to watch the match. The governor of Madhya Pradesh along with the prime Minister and other high officials, was present there. All round the field, students and the common public had gathered. The spectators were impatiently waiting for the match to begin.

The players took the field exactly at 4 p.m. the yellow of the Jhansi Heroes presented a striking contrast to the blue and red of the Bombay Eleven. Deep Chand and some other famous Olympic players were playing for Jhansi. On the other side the Bombay Eleven were the hockey champions of their provinces. Hence everybody expected a very good game.

From the very beginning, the game proved thrilling. The Jhansi Heroes were active and began their attack with great vigour. They showed excellent combination and real team spirit. Their forward players combined well and passed the ball with great skill. Thus they were able to make repeated attacks on the Bombay Eleven who had to play a defensive game. The defence line of Bombay was quite strong. Their center half was a tower of strength for his side. Again and again, he had a tough contest with Deep Chand who would not easily get the better of him.

During the first half of the game, the Bombay Eleven were hard-pressed. After half-time, the game began with fresh enthusiasm. Deep Chand, the captain of the Jhansi heroes seemed rather vexed at the inability of his side to score. Now he decided to lead the attack. On the other hand, Bombay Eleven changed their tactics. Now they also began to attack fiercely. For a few movements, the game was extremely contested. At first, it seemed that the Bombay Eleven would defeat their opponents. But soon it became clear that they were more or less tried. Moreover, they were individually good players but lacked combination and their spirit.

The game reached its height during the last 15 minutes. Deep Chand carried the ball to the goal circle and passed it to his right-out who gave a hard bit. The ball went straight to the net. The spectators were wild with joy. Amar Nath Sharma who had given the lucky shot became the hero of the crowd.

Now the game became highly exciting. The Bombay Eleven made every effort to score but Jhansi backs and half-backs put up a hard defecne. They would not let the ball touch even their goal circle. Deep Chand scored another goal. This was a decisive blow.

Now Bombay Eleven knew that it was over. So the  match ended in victory for the Jhansi heroes, who received the gold trophy from the Governor.

Essay No. 3

Hockey is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and exciting games, from the point of view of both the players and the spectators. It is a fast game, not slow and leisurely like cricket. Besides, there are a few uncertainties and surprises in the game. In hockey, victory always goes to the better players, better both as regards skill and coordination. We had an interesting. Exhibition of hockey the other day at the Shiva Ji Stadium. It was a match between the University Eleven and the District Eleven. The District Eleven won this match by two goals to one. The District victory was hard-earned. The University men played well, but not well enough in comparison with the district team. But the University men certainly made the District Players fight for every inch.

The University men proceeded to give the District team one of the hardest times experienced by them. Never at any time were the District allowed to relax. While the District team had to thank Ajay Sharma and Ravi for their many breakthroughs and Manoj for his cleverly imitated moves, the University team owed much to Rajesh and Wazir.

Exchanges were more or less even the initial session, though the University team for long spells pinned the District team to their own area. But when it came to scoring, it was the team to their own area. But when it came to scoring. It was the District team who took the initiative first. Manoj tried to get the District’s attack going with some well-spread passes. The University team were out first with a penalty corner that could not be used to better advantage. Then followed good hockey, though unproductive as far as goals went, for the next fifteen minutes. A few moves between Sunil, Manoj, and Ajay Sharma ended with the last getting the better of right–back Hari and hitting the ball in from next to the advancing Goalkeepers. But even as the ball hit the boards, umpire Davi Singh pulled up Raman for obstruction and awarded a penalty–push. Ajit converted it into a goal. This happened in the 17 th minute. The University team applied pressure, following the reverse, and five minutes later, inside–right Jain scooped out from the top of the area. In the last minute of the first half, District Eleven wasted a penalty corner hit.

Once the teams changed sides for the second half, the District team took over the attack and for about ten minutes gave the University defense a grueling time. The University wasted a penalty corner. Immediately the ball was propelled to the other end where a timely advance by Pawan stopped Aditya at the top of the “D”. the game swung to the District half with University forwards, spurred by Hari, going all out for the equalizer. They were not denied for long when Divyansh pushed the ball in from a hectic melee, following a penalty corner hit taken by full-back Wazir that was padded weakly by Raman.

But it was to be a District’s day and now they subjected the University defense to some pounding. Two minutes from the equalizer, Lakhi Ram cut the ball as he took a penalty corner shot and goal was disallowed.

The next minute in a rare flash by Ajay Sharma, the District went ahead, put through by the outside left, he entered the area with the ball well in control and dodged the advancing Pawan with a back-hand flick. Pawan stood bewildered as the ball was shot past him into the goal.

The game was exciting from beginning to end and it was full of suspense. The crowd was very enthusiastic and except at one point fully endorsed the judgment of the umpire Davi Singh. No ugly incident marred the play. There was some partisan clapping and hearty shouts of “buck up, buck up” by the respective supporters in the crowed, but that always happens at such matches. The end–of–monsoon weather was excellent, and the match was played in a picturesque setting in which the soft green grass blended beautifully well with the contrasting blue and yellow colour of the District and the University teams.

Last month I saw a hockey match. It was played be- tween SBM School and Khalsa Boys School. It was played at SBM School’s playground.

Both the teams arrived at the ground at 3 p.m. The players got ready. They wore their kits and just warmed themselves up for the match. The referees blew a whistle. The two teams were introduced to them. Supporters of both the teams were present in large numbers.

Then the players occupied their positions after the toss for the side. The match began at 3.30 p.m. The players of the Khalsa team passed the ball to each other. The beginning was somewhat slow. Soon the passes became quick. SBM players tackled nicely. Their center half sent a long pass to the left out. He spend forth and gave a long push inside the ‘D’ of the Khalsa Boys team. The Centre forward rushed in, took the ball in his control, and pushed the ball inside the goal. It was a very fine goal. The referee blew a whistle.

Once again the ball was put in the center for the game to resume. All the supporters of SBM shouted, clapped, and jumped with joy. Once again the ball changed sides. The Khalsa Boys played with much more vigor. Just the interval they got a penalty corner. It was turned into a superb goal. Now both the teams were equal. Then there was a long whistle for the halftime. The two teams came out. The players had discussed future plans to excel the other team. They also drank Pepsi. Some took lemon water.

The second half started. The two teams had changed sides. The Khalsa Boys played well. This time they outplayed their rivals and scored the second goal. The players of SBM tried their level best to equalize the goal. Several attempts were made to score the goal but the goalkeeper saved their moves every time. Just before the end of the match, the SBM boys got a penalty corner. It was hit nicely but the goalkeeper once again stopped the ball from entering the net. Soon the final whistle blew. The Khalsa Boys (team) won the match. It was a good match. Both the teams played a fair game. But the better team won.

The rules set by the International Hockey Federation FIH are used worldwide to play hockey games. Hockey is played between two teams of 11 players each, including a goalkeeper. Before starting the game, a coin is tossed between the captains of the two teams. The team captain that wins the toss has to choose the starting end or start with the ball. The game time is divided into four quarters of 15 minutes each, 15-02-15-10-15-2-15. At the start of each quarter, as well as after goals are scored, the match is started with a pass from the centre of the field.

Field players may only play the ball with the flat side of the stick. Tackling is permitted as long as the tackler does not make contact with the attacker or his stick before playing the ball. Further, the player is not allowed to deliberately use his body or stick to shield the ball from a legitimate tackle. A goal is scored when an attacker strikes the ball into the goal from within the striking circle, even if the ball touches the defender and goes into the goal.

When the ball passes over the sidelines, it is returned to play from the sideline either by an individual player by himself or with a push or hit, taken by a member of the team whose players were not the last to touch the ball before crossing the sideline. If it crosses the goal line after being last touched by an attacker, a 15-metre hit or pass can be made by any player in the defending team. A 15-metre hit is also awarded for offences committed by the attacking side within 15 metres of the end of the pitch they are attacking.

National Sports Day of India

The National Sports Day in India is celebrated on 29th August to commemorate Major Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary. In 2012, the Government of India designated 29th August as the country’s “National Sports Day”. On this occasion, the President of India gives out all the sports-related awards like Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award and Rajiv Khel Ratna Award. It is done to honour sportspersons and coaches who have made the nation proud with their service in their respective sports.

Hockey is a popular and interesting sport. But still, in India, it has not got much attention. There are very few people who have a passion for hockey and would like to be a part of the Indian hockey team. The Government of India should give more facilities and pay more attention to promoting hockey. It should be included in Physical Education, and proper coaching should be provided so students can start playing hockey at the school level.

500 Words Essay on Our National Game Hockey

Introduction to hockey: our national game.

Hockey, our national game, is not merely a sport but a reflection of our national spirit and pride. The game’s roots in India can be traced back to ancient times, with references found in historical texts and scriptures. Today, hockey is synonymous with India’s athletic prowess on the international stage.

The Historical Significance of Hockey

The history of hockey in India is as rich and diverse as the country itself. The British introduced the modern form of the game to India in the late 19th century. However, the sport quickly transcended its colonial origins, becoming a symbol of national unity. The Indian Hockey Federation was established in 1925, and just a year later, India made its debut at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam. The golden era of Indian hockey began in 1928 when India won its first Olympic gold medal, marking the start of an unprecedented streak of six consecutive gold medals.

The Game and Its Rules

Hockey is a game of agility, precision, and strategy. Played between two teams of eleven players each, the objective is to score by hitting, pushing, or flicking the ball into the opponent’s goal using a hockey stick. The game is divided into four quarters of 15 minutes each, with a 15-minute half-time break. The team with the most goals at the end of the match wins.

The Current Scenario of Hockey in India

In recent years, Indian hockey has seen a resurgence. The men’s team won a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, their first Olympic medal in 41 years. The women’s team, too, has shown remarkable progress, reaching the semi-finals at the same event. The Hockey India League, a professional league for field hockey in India, has also played a significant role in promoting the sport at the grassroots level.

The Challenges and Way Forward

Despite its historical significance and recent successes, hockey in India faces several challenges. These include a lack of infrastructure, inadequate funding, and a dearth of quality coaching at the grassroots level. To overcome these challenges, a multi-pronged approach is required. This includes increased investment in infrastructure, talent scouting at a young age, and the promotion of the sport through media and educational institutions.

Hockey, our national game, is a testament to our nation’s resilience and tenacity. It is a sport that has brought glory to our nation and unified us in times of triumph and defeat. As we move forward, it is crucial that we invest in the future of this sport, nurturing it at the grassroots level, and ensuring that it continues to be a source of national pride. The game of hockey, much like our nation, is a story of struggle, perseverance, and ultimate triumph. We must ensure that this story continues to be told and celebrated.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Set 1: Essay On A Hockey Match 400 Words

Sports play a vital role in the overall development of the children, as along with physical exercise it also develops qualities like friendship, sportsmanship, and concentration. We play many games during our school and college life.  Hockey  is one of the favorite games played in India. In our country, hockey is played not only at the national and international levels but also at the local level.

I saw the final match of the annual Scindia Hockey tournament last month. It was a tough match between D. A. V.  School  and Maharaj Agrasan Vidyalaya. As I am a student of D.A.V. School, I went to cheer my schoolmates. The match was organized at R.D.College ground. Both the teams had eleven players each. The teams were introduced to each other before the match began.

The match was being judged by two umpires. The toss went in favor of Maharaj Agrasan Vidyalaya. The game proved to be very thrilling right from the beginning. The D.A.V. School players were active and began their attack with great vigor. Both the teams were trying to score a goal. After 15 minutes Maharaj Agrasan Vidyalaya scored their first goal. D.A.V. school could not make any goal till the first half of the match through their forward players played well and passed the ball with great skill.

After half time the game resumed with fresh enthusiasm. Soon, D.A.V. school got a chance to play a corner due to the fault of the opposing team. They did not miss this chance and scored a goal. Thunderous applause rocked the ground as both the teams were equal. Every stroke of the team was being applauded. D.A.V. team was now very confident and was able to make repeated attacks on the opposing team. They scored their 2nd goal during the last ten minutes and the game reached its climax. The spectators had gone wild with joy.

After this Agrasan Vidyalaya made every effort to score a second goal but they could not succeed. Finally, the match ended in the victory of D.A.V. school. The winning team was given a trophy and the runner-up team was given a consolation prize. The best player was honored with separate prizes.

School students lifted the winning team members on their shoulders. The next day our Principal felicitated the team members in front of all the school students. We all wished them the best of luck.
