Treasury summer internship .

The application period for the 2024 Summer Internship is closed .  All completed applications are reviewed by staff, and all applicants were notified of the result by December. We will open the 2025 Summer Internship application sometime in August or September.

Ready to make an impact?

Are you the equivalent of a rising senior in college working towards a career on the trading floor of a major bank, investment or private equity firm or one of the departments supporting that function? Get a strong boost down that path with a Treasury Summer Internship.

With us, you will not just work in financial markets: you will help create new ones.  The Treasury Summer Internship Program is a junior professional training program designed to develop the skills necessary to have an exciting and rewarding career in the financial industry. The Program aims to bring exceptional college students with a demonstrated interest in a financial career to support the World Bank’s development mandate. The internship lays the foundation to become a Junior Analyst, a two-year position on one Treasury team, immediately after the intern graduates from their degree program. Interns are expected to be in their second to final year in the equivalent of a four-year college degree program.

The Internship

Treasury Summer Interns will work full-time for ten weeks from May 28 through August 5, 2024, in Washington, DC. Interns receive a custom onboarding program in the first week before beginning three three-week rotations across Treasury teams. Throughout the summer, interns participate in weekly discussions with the program director and attend a career perspectives speaker series to hear from various Treasury officers, managers, and directors. Interns have access to the nearly 300-employee Treasury, including meetings with the Vice President & Treasurer. Interns complete each rotation with a presentation to their respective team and complete the internship by presenting their work in a capstone project to the management team.

Internship Calendar

Onboarding Week: May 28 – 31 Rotation 1: June 3 – June 21 Rotation 2: June 24 – July 12 Rotation 3: July 15 – August 2 Capstone Presentation: August 5

Observed Holidays: June 19, July 4

Interns join on a short-term temporary contract and are paid between $20.40 (net – for non-US Citizens) and $24.60 (gross – for US Citizens) per hour for a total of 400 hours. All interns are expected to be in person, full-time, in Washington, DC, for the entire internship (May 28 – August 5). HR policies may change, but interns are expected to work at least four days in the office per week. Each intern will receive a World Bank laptop at the start of the internship. If required, the World Bank sponsors the appropriate visa for an incoming intern to work in the United States.

The Work & Teams

The program will hire up to 16 interns across Treasury’s 16 teams this summer, and each intern will have a different rotation schedule to create a diverse and unique experience. Treasury comprises four main departments: Asset Management & Advisory, Capital Markets & Investments, Treasury Operations, and Pension & Endowments, in addition to the Treasury Risk, Compliance, and Controls team. Throughout their internship, each participant will be paired with a mentor and coordinator for each rotation, to provide guidance and support. Interns will engage in specific projects or tasks as directed by their team at the outset of each rotation. We highly encourage to explore more about our organization, each department, and read about the 16 teams .

Junior Professional Associate

Junior Professional Associates (JPA) Program

The Junior Professional Associate (JPA) program is a unique opportunity to gain entry-level professional experience and first-hand exposure to the challenges – and rewards – of international development.

Are you a recent graduate? Do you have passion for and commitment to helping others? Are you looking for a solid, two-year entry-level work experience in a multicultural environment? If so, you may be interested in the World Bank’s JPA program.

In your JPA assignment, you'll use your strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, your knowledge of technology and your research abilities - working with more senior colleagues and project teams in their work both in operations and in corporate functions. You'll have an opportunity to hone your skills and acquire new ones while gaining first-hand exposure to the challenges of reducing poverty and boosting shared prosperity. Your experience as a JPA may be used as a steppingstone to a career in government, consulting, the private sector, academia or other development agencies.

What are we looking for?

Your academic achievements are superior and place you in the top portion of your graduating class. Your analytical and research skills extend to areas of specialization such as: economics, finance, human development (public health, education, nutrition, population), social sciences (anthropology, sociology), agriculture, environment (climate, blue economy), infrastructure, private sector development, as well as other related fields, including corporate and administrative functions (IT, legal, accounting, communications, etc).

You are fluent in English and, preferably, in at least one other Bank language (French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese, or Chinese). You love technology and integrate it in your work.

What are we offering you?

We will provide you with the opportunity to gain entry-level professional experience in a premier development institution, on a two-year, non-renewable Extended Term Consultant (ETC) contract with benefits.

Eligibility Criteria

The following are minimum requirements to be eligible for the JPA program:

  • Be 28 years of age or younger on your first day of service
  • Hold the equivalent of a Bachelor's degree
  • Be fluent in English
  • One or more of the Bank’s working languages is a plus: Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

Since this employment program is highly competitive, applicants under active consideration for employment may be asked to submit academic records as well as references. The World Bank will contact only those applicants whom hiring managers wish to interview.

Positions may be located in any of the World Bank's offices across the world.

A JPA assignment is not an entry point for a career at the World Bank and employment beyond the two-year contract will be prohibited for a period of two years after the end of the contract. However, some former JPAs may rejoin the organization later in their careers after gaining experience elsewhere and becoming experts in their professional fields.

Recruitment and hiring for this employment category is ongoing throughout the year.

How to apply?

Interested candidates may apply online. (Please take care to provide required information where indicated). Please note that applications will be kept active in our database for a period of six months. Should you still be interested in JPA program after six months, you will need to re-apply. Only those identified for an assignment will be contacted to discuss their interest and availability. Candidates are selected by the hiring manager on a highly competitive basis.

Diversity and Inclusion

The World Bank continually searches for qualified individuals with a diverse set of backgrounds from around the globe. We are proud to be an equal opportunity and inclusive employer with a dedicated and committed workforce, and do not discriminate based on gender, gender identity, religion, race, color, ethnicity, sexual orientation or disability.

Individuals with disabilities may be provided reasonable accommodations to perform essential functions and support in receiving other workplace accommodations.

Please see the videos " Behind the Mission: Working at the World Bank Group "

World bank jobs – what do recruiters look for in cover letters.

world bank application cover letter

As part of the application process of most job opportunities, candidates are usually required to submit a cover letter. The main goal of this document is to give candidates a chance to introduce themselves and explain their motivation in applying to the organization, such as the World Bank Group.

As the name suggests, a cover letter serves as a “cover” for the documents you submit for a job application. It should provide a summary of a candidate’s skills, professional experience, and qualifications that meet the needs of a job opening, emphasizing why the candidate should be selected. Cover letters are usually seen as a personal marketing tool.

This article is just a small sample of all the information covered by our comprehensive eBook – The World Bank Group Jobs and Careers . If you want to know more about it go to our online store to purchase the eBook!

WBG Jobs and Careers eBook

In the World Bank jobs selection process, the cover letter is one of the documents candidates must submit when applying for it, to serve as an introduction to their Curriculum Vitae or Resume. It should contextualize you CV/Resume and all its information in an objective fashion, highlighting the elements that are in line with the WB job opening. Its main objective is to reinforce the candidate’s positive qualities in order to arouse the evaluator’s interest and desire to know more about the individual.

In order to write a strong cover letter, it is important to know what the recruiters will be looking for, so here are some of the aspects the recruiting team seeks to evaluate:

  • Competencies : Competencies may be understood as the candidate’s set of knowledge, abilities, attitudes and values. The majority of the Bank’s selection processes are competencies-based. Therefore, it is important the candidate shows that s/he has the main competencies the Bank is seeking, such Teamwork, Innovation, Negotiation, Results Orientation, Problem Analysis, Strategic Perspective. Note that the required competencies can change according to the post being advertised. Since the World Bank is indisputably a value-driven organization, your personal values and the manner in which they are linked to the organization’s should also be highlighted.
  • Knowledge about the organization : It is expected that the candidate demonstrates knowledge about the World Bank Group, such as its mission, its operational approach, activities, and main objectives.
  • Cultural fit : Showing sound knowledge of the organization is not enough. The candidate should highlight that there is compatibility between their values, principles, objectives, and understanding of reality with those of the organization.
  • Communicative capacity : The cover letter enables the recruiter to evaluate the candidate’s writing skills and their ability to structure ideas and coherently defend arguments.
  • Technical knowledge : the candidate should present how s/he would contribute to the WB on the job. Expert assessors from the area the candidate is applying to will assess if the candidate has the technical knowledge required by the Bank and if s/he fully grasps the fundamental concepts of their specialized area.

In pursuit of its mission, OpenIGO has prepared support and guidance services, with the aim of highly increasing your chances of success in these competitive selection processes.  These services include revising your WBG application documents (curriculum vitae/resume and cover letter) and a mock interview, as per the WBG model. We also offer a range of packages that combine the eBook with different services.

Writing Cover Letters For A Career Change: Tips And Examples

Embarking on a career change is a pivotal moment, fraught with uncertainty but brimming with potential. And especially in cases where your resume might not directly align with the job at hand, your cover letter becomes the narrative that connects the dots. A well-crafted cover can illuminate your strengths, align your past experiences with your future aspirations, and persuade potential employers to see the value you bring.

The Importance Of A Cover Letter In Career Changes

In career transitions, your cover letter is your storyteller. It explains the why and the how of your career change, showcasing your enthusiasm and demonstrating how your background equips you with unique perspectives and transferable skills. It addresses potential concerns about your career shift head-on, presenting your transition as an asset rather than a liability.

Tips For Writing A Career Change Cover Letter

1. Personalize Your Approach : Address the letter to a specific person whenever possible. Doing so demonstrates attention to detail and a genuine interest in the position. You want to show that you’re not conducting a generic job search, but that you’ve done your research. You’ve perused (not skimmed) the company website and you read that 20-page yearly report from the CEO. You’ve even read their blog and can quote freely from it. You’ve educated yourself.

2. Emphasize Transferable Skills : Highlight the skills and experiences from your previous roles that are relevant to the new position. Be specific and quantify achievements where possible.

3. Show Enthusiasm and Commitment : Employers want to know that you are genuinely interested in the new field. Express your passion for the career change and your eagerness to contribute.

4. Tailor Your Narrative : Connect your past experiences to the job you're applying for, demonstrating how your unique background can bring a fresh perspective to the role.

5. Address Potential Concerns : Be upfront about your career change, framing it as a positive decision guided by clear motivation and a strong understanding of the new field.

6. End with a Strong Call to Action : Conclude by expressing your desire to discuss your application further in an interview, showing proactivity and determination.

7. Use Strategic Language : Avoid clichéd adjectives. Opt for vivid, specific language that paints a clear picture of your capabilities and achievements.

Example: General Career Change Cover Letter

Including A Career Change Statement On Your Resume/CV

While your cover letter is the ideal place to elaborate on your career change, your resume/CV should also reflect this transition. A brief career change statement, positioned at the beginning of your resume, can effectively set the context for your career narrative. This statement should succinctly convey your transition, emphasizing your commitment to the new field and highlighting any transferable skills or relevant experiences.

How To Craft A Career Change Statement For Your Resume

1. Objective Statement : Begin with a clear, concise objective that outlines your career goals and demonstrates your enthusiasm for your new field.

2. Summary of Qualifications : Follow your objective with a brief summary of your most relevant qualifications, focusing on skills and experiences that transition well into your new career.

3. Highlight Transferable Skills : Clearly identify and emphasize any skills from your previous career that are pertinent to your new path. This not only demonstrates your capability but also shows your proactive approach in aligning your skill set with the new role's requirements.

4. Tailor Your Experience : Adjust the descriptions of your past positions to highlight the responsibilities and achievements most relevant to your desired career path. Use quantifiable achievements to underscore your adaptability and impact.

5. Education and Training : If you have pursued any education or training relevant to your new field, highlight this prominently on your resume to illustrate your dedication and commitment to your career change.

Make Your Language Unique

To avoid sounding like everyone else, remember to use distinctive and precise adjectives in your cover letter and resume. For instance:

  • Instead of "experienced," try "seasoned" or "accomplished," providing specific examples that demonstrate this experience, like spearheading a successful project or leading a team to exceed its targets.
  • Replace "passionate" with "enthused" or "committed," detailing a project or initiative you pursued with zeal, which can resonate more authentically with hiring managers.
  • Substitute "results-driven" with "outcome-focused," illustrating this with a particular scenario where your focus on results led to tangible success for your organization.

Your cover letter and resume are your advocates, narrating your professional journey and articulating why you are not just seeking a new job, but embarking on a new career with purpose and passion. By carefully crafting these documents to reflect your individual story, you position yourself as a memorable and compelling candidate, someone who stands out from the crowd.
