You can upgrade your phone at any time as soon as you’re 12 months into your plan and there’s the option to trade-in an eligible handset for an instant saving on your new phone.

Vodafone OneNumber & Smartwatches for Business

With Vodafone OneNumber , you’re able to leave your smartphone at home and get access to your messages and notifications on a smartwatch instead. You’ll also be able to make and receive phone calls using your normal mobile number so there’s no need to worry about missing anything important.

5G Coverage At No Extra Cost

When you’re using a 5G phone in a 5G coverage area, you can expect faster download speeds (around 150-200Mbps on average). You’ll also benefit from more network capacity and lower amounts of latency when you’re connected to 5G.

At present, Vodafone offers 5G coverage in more than 100 UK towns and cities, with further locations regularly being added. You can also access 5G coverage when travelling abroad in more than 200 locations across Germany, Italy, Spain and the Republic of Ireland.

Selected Vodafone Business plans come with inclusive roaming in either 51 European destinations or 83 worldwide destinations at no extra cost. In other places, you’ll normally be able to roam for a fixed daily charge.

Keeping Your Phone Number

Start by requesting a PAC Code from your old network. You can get one through your mobile network’s website or app, or by texting PAC to 65075. Once you have it, you’ll be able to order your Vodafone Business plan online .

Once your new mobile phone or SIM card arrives, you’ll be able to set it up and provide your PAC Code to Vodafone . The transfer of your phone number will then be scheduled, normally for the next working day.

Vodafone goes after SMBs with new business plans and apps

Vodafone Australia is eyeing a more prominent role in the SMB sphere, with the announcement of a new suite of business-centric plans and access to third-party apps.

The telecommunications carrier's new Business Flex plans allow small and medium-sized businesses to curate their own mobile phone plans, ranging from AU$30 to AU$150 per month.

The plans all include unlimited text messages and national calls, data of up to 20GB per month, AU$5 per day global roaming , the capability to share plan inclusions across all employees, a personal account manager based out of Vodafone's Tasmanian service centre for companies with 10 or more employees on a Business Flex plan, the telco's 30-day Network Happiness Guarantee , up to 10,000 Qantas Acquire points, and an "optional technology fund" to aid businesses in purchasing new smartphones and tablets.

Stuart Kelly, Vodafone's executive general manager for Enterprise Business, said the plans enable businesses to only pay for inclusions they need.

"Business Flex offers an alternative, which means businesses only pay for the essentials and can purchase add-ons as they see fit," Kelly said.

"We have heard that many businesses are disappointed and fed up with the overall value and service they are receiving from their current provider.

"We are also proud to offer Australian businesses with ten or more connections a single point of contact to focus specifically on serving the needs of their business and delivering best-in class customer service."

Vodafone's expanded Ready Business Apps portal, meanwhile, now includes Norton Small Business, Dropbox Business, MozyPro, Xero, and Office 365. GoDaddy and Google Apps for Work will be added later this month.

The telecommunications provider is also throwing in a two-month subscription for Dropbox Business, Norton Small Business, Xero, and GoDaddy Website Builder. Thereafter, Dropbox starts from AU$34 per month for two licences; Norton Small Business starts at AU$10.83 per month for up to five devices; Xero starts at AU$25 per month for one employee; and GoDaddy Website Builder costs AU$14 per month, while MozyPro costs AU$10 per month for 10GB of storage; Office 365 costs AU$7 per month per licence; Google Apps for Work starts at AU$5 per licence per month; and GoDaddy Domain's lowest-cost offering is AU$12.99 per year.

According to Kelly, the financial management, productivity, business building, and data security apps were chosen after a "comprehensive review of the core communication requirements and needs of Australian small businesses".

"We found through our research that mobility and office enablement were common needs across numerous industries and business sizes, so we have designed our Ready Business Apps range to ensure that whether you're a graphic designer, a plumber, a retailer, or real estate agency, your business has the tools it needs to help grow and run more smoothly, all at the touch of a button," said Kelly.

Kelly claimed that Vodafone's new plans and app suite are of significant value for businesses when combined with its recent network investments.

"It's clear that Vodafone's network is holding its own. Our 4G network is reliable and resilient. We are proud to back our network investment with a Network Happiness Guarantee, which means if you join us and you're not happy with our network in the first 30 days, you can cancel your contract and only pay for what you've used until the cancellation goes through," the head of Enterprise said.

Vodafone has recently expanded its 4G network nationwide by purchasing AU$68 million worth of 1800MHz spectrum ; refarmed its 850MHz spectrum band to bring coverage to regional and metropolitan Queensland , New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory ; proposed to the Australian government that it be permitted to pay AU$594.3 million for 2x 10MHz in the 700MHz spectrum band that was unsold in the 2013 auction; and last week announced an investment of over AU$9 million to be spent on constructing 32 new mobile base stations across the country.

How we rate business mobile plan providers

Our ratings compare mobile phone plan providers offering business plans, based on customer satisfaction as rated by Australians.

How many Australians do we survey for our ratings?

Canstar Blue surveyed 580 Australians with a current business mobile plan service for their feedback on mobile plan providers they’ve been signed up to. Respondents had to have a current mobile phone plan for a business and that business pays the bills.

  • The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics .

What criteria are used to rate business mobile plan providers?

Survey respondents are asked to rate their satisfaction with their business mobile phone plan provider from zero to 10 , with zero meaning extremely dissatisfied and 10 meaning extremely satisfied. Business mobile plan provider satisfaction is rated on the following criteria:

  • Overall satisfaction: measures consumer satisfaction with a mobile plan provider as an individual score, NOT the combined total of all criteria.
  • Value for money: the price paid for the mobile phone plan was reasonable for the service experienced.
  • Network coverage: the mobile network offered good and reliable coverage.
  • Client service: the mobile plan provider offered good service and support, and was easy to get in touch with.
  • Billing: the mobile plan billing was clear and easy to understand and pay.
  • Plan flexibility: the mobile plan provider offered a reasonable amount of plan flexibility.

How do we determine the winner?

The winning brand is the brand that receives the highest Overall satisfaction rating . All the scores from the Overall satisfaction criteria are then combined and averaged to determine the overall winner.

  • Overall satisfaction is asked as a specific question and represents an individual measure, not a combined total of all criteria.
  • The brand with the highest number of five-star ratings within the supporting criteria will become the five-star recipient in overall satisfaction, and therefore win the award. If a clear leading brand still cannot be determined from the supporting criteria, joint winners will be declared.

To qualify in the ratings results, providers must have received a minimum of 30 responses to be included. Therefore, not all mobile phone plan providers offering business services will be compared in this survey. Providers rated in this survey are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.

Vodafone came out on top for the second year in a row, scoring five stars for overall satisfaction. It also scored five stars for value for money, client service, billing and plan flexibility, while it scored four stars for network coverage.

Editor’s notes

Vodafone offers the option of SIM-only plans or plans that can be bundled with a device. All that you need to do is supply your ABN/ACN on sign up, or link it to an existing Vodafone mobile plan account, with additional business plans also able be added.

Telstra took out second place with four stars for overall satisfaction, value for money, client service, billing and plan flexibility, while it scored five stars for network coverage.

Telstra offers a range of SIM-only plans or plans with a phone, with the option to bundle services onto the one plan. Its plans and device selection are essentially the same offerings as what you’ll get if you sign up to a non-business plan. If you bundle a phone with a plan, you’ll choose from a 12, 24 or 36-month device repayment period.

Ratings results

Rounding out our ratings in third is Optus with three stars for overall satisfaction and billing, while it scored four stars in the remaining categories — value for money, network coverage, client service and plan flexibility.

Optus offer a range of options for its business phone plans. While you can pick a similar selection of SIM-only plans and devices to its non-business phone plans, Optus does offer McAfee protection on up to 20 devices on its Business Choice Plus plans. Optus also offers a ‘team plan’ which includes four SIM plans with data to share and flexibility, along with the option to add on additional SIMs for an extra cost per SIM.

Other business phone plan providers

Apart from the above-mentioned providers, there are several other telcos also offering phone plans for businesses, although many of these providers might only offer SIM-only plans and no handsets for bundling. These telcos include:

  • Aussie Broadband
  • Southern Phone

Choosing a phone plan provider

Access to a phone and/or phone plan for work can be an essential part of a business. Of those surveyed, 27% provide employees with a mobile phone for work use and 33% upgrade handsets every one to two years.

Despite several providers offering mobile phone services to businesses, 50% of respondents have always been with the same business phone service provider. A big reason for this could be that almost a third of respondents (31%) believe the provider offers good value, while 26% believe their provider offers the best coverage or is the only provider with coverage in the area.

When choosing a provider for your business mobile phone services, there can be a lot to consider. 17% of survey respondents claimed that they don’t find the time to compare other offers and switch providers, so it might seem like a lot to think about on top of operating a business.

However, when you break it down to a few points, comparing business mobile phone plans might be more simple than you think.

Phone with a plan or SIM-only

The first thing to consider is whether you’ll need phones bundled with a phone plan — such as an iPhone or Samsung phone — or if you simply need the phone plan on its own. If you need handsets with a plan, your provider choices will mostly be limited to the big three telcos (Telstra, Optus and Vodafone).

If you just need the SIM cards with a phone plan, then you have a wider range of options to choose from.

Additional extras

Some providers will offer business-related extras such as the ability to bundle multiple services, data sharing across plans, device security software and more. If these extras are important to you, you can then compare providers to see what is available and which telco will offer the best value for you.

How much mobile data you need for your plans is pretty important. Consider what your team will be using their phone plans for — such as working on the go, accessing emails, video conferencing, making calls, etc — will help determine whether you need a plan with lots of data or not. If phones will be used primarily for making and receiving calls and accessing emails, a smaller amount of data, or a data-sharing plan, might work best. Otherwise you’ll need bigger data plans for working on the go and video conferencing.

Mobile coverage

Of course, for some workers, a phone plan can be essential when travelling for work. If your team frequently needs to travel, especially to regional and remote areas, ensuring your choice of provider has good mobile network coverage in that area is essential.

While the Telstra, Optus and Vodafone networks all offer coverage to the majority of the country, it’s worth checking the mobile coverage map before signing up to a provider to ensure that the areas your team will be working from are covered by the mobile network.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then by mean overall satisfaction. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.

Vodafone is introducing a limited-time promotion, offering up to $10 off per month on selected Business Broadband nbn® plans for the initial 6 months. This enticing deal is available until April 30, 2024.

The recently launched Business Broadband nbn® plans by Vodafone boast high-speed connectivity, unlimited data, and flexible terms with no lock-in contracts, presenting an attractive option for businesses seeking a high-value internet solution. All plans include a complimentary static IP address and a business-grade modem (with $0 upfront cost for a 24-month commitment), featuring 4G mobile backup capabilities.

Crafted to keep small businesses connected and competitive, these plans deliver high-speed access, unlimited data, and flexibility without contractual obligations at affordable rates.

Vodafone customers can enjoy additional savings of $15 per month when bundling the Business Broadband nbn® service with a new or existing Vodafone postpaid mobile plan on the same account. Despite its network falling short of Telstra and Optus in terms of size, Vodafone has made great strides when it comes to 5G availability, meaning customers stay connected to its 5G network for longer. We also like that Vodafone's Aussie plans are all reasonably priced and offer more data than the competition. That said, Vodafone's coverage lags behind the other major telcos, particularly outside of major Australian cities.

Of the three major network operators in Australia, Vodafone arguably offers the best bang for your buck, with reasonably-priced post-paid and pre-paid options that typically provide plenty of data.

Surprisingly, Vodafone is the only telco of the big three to give customers a discounted rate for bundling a mobile plan with one of its NBN services, making it a good choice for those looking to bring down monthly costs.

That said, Vodafone's mobile network comes in third behind Telstra and Optus in terms of size, resulting in far less 4G and 5G reach than its competitors once you venture outside of Australia's major cities.

Despite this, Vodafone is still able to provide decent 5G coverage in areas where a larger competitor like Optus has yet to make any ground.

It's also the slowest of the three mobile networks, with 5G download speeds half as fast as Telstra and Optus on average, according to a recent report from OpenSignal. That said, the telco has made strides in other areas.

Vodafone also deserves praise for its Hobart-based customer support centre, along with having around 250 physical stores across the country for those who prefer face-to-face service.

Vodafone mobile plans and pricing

  • Vodafone SIM-only plans on-par with Optus pricing
  • Vodafone plans include more data than rivals

If a SIM-only plan's value is judged primarily on the amount of data included, Vodafone easily takes the crown. 

For instance, Vodafone's top-level 'Large' plan ( AU$69 p/m , or AU$0.19 per GB) offers the same amount of data (360GB p/m) as the Optus 'Extra Large' plan  (AU$89 p/m, or AU$0.25 per GB), despite being AU$20 cheaper per month.

Likewise, Vodafone's 'Medium' plan ( AU$59 p/m , or AU$0.33 per GB) offers the same amount of data (180GB p/m) as Telstra's equivalent mid-level plan (AU$72 p/m, or AU$0.40 per GB), and still manages to be cheaper than Telstra's entry-level option (AU$62 p/m, or AU$0.34 per GB), which only provides a measly 50GB monthly data allowance.

Of course, 50GB p/m will likely be enough for most people, which is what's included with Vodafone's 'Small' plan, priced at  AU$49 p/m  (or AU$0.98 per GB).

While that's not great value compared to the amount of data offered by Vodafone's other plans, it still gets you 20GB more per month than what's offered by the  entry-level Optus plan , also priced at AU$49 p/m (or AU$0.61 per GB).

As for inclusions, all of Vodafone's SIM-only plans provide unlimited standard national calls and text, unlimited standard minutes from Australia to Zone 1 territories, and 300 minutes from Australia to Zone 2 territories. There are also no lock-in contracts, which is great.

Download speeds are uncapped within your monthly download limit, after which they will slow down to 2Mbps (or as Vodafone puts it, enough to stream music, stream standard definition video, make video calls, browse the internet and use social media).

If post-paid plans are not your bag, Vodafone also offers a range of Prepaid Plus plans with a 28-day expiry period. In terms of benefits, you can save AU$5 per recharge when you opt-in to Automatic Recharge. You also get to bank up to 200GB of unused data so long as you recharge before the end of your expiry period.

Vodafone's most affordable option is the AU$30 Prepaid Plus Starter Pack, which gets you 20GB of data per 28 days. Currently, there's also an offer for new customers which provides double data (20GB + 20GB) on the first three recharges, after which the monthly data allowance goes back to normal.

This is followed by the AU$40 Prepaid Plus Starter Pack with 30GB of data per 28 days. This one is currently on sale for new customers, priced at AU$20 for the first three recharges. Like the previous option, you also get double data (30GB + 30GB) during that initial promotional period.

The third and final option with a standard 28-day expiry period is a AU$50 Prepaid Plus Starter Pack, which typically comes with 45GB of data. That's bumped up to 80GB for new customers on their first three recharges.

Alternatively, Vodafone also offers a AU$250 Prepaid Plus Starter Pack with a 365-day expiry period. Usually, this plan only offers 150GB of data, however, a current promotion (ending on April 9, 2024) gets you 90GB of bonus data for a total of 240GB.

Please note, Vodafone will be changing up its prepaid plan structure from April 10, 2024. We will update you on the changes once they've happened.

Vodafone mobile coverage

  • Good metropolitan coverage, but weak outside of major cities
  • Awarded best 5G availability by OpenSignal

Vodafone operates the third-largest mobile network in Australia behind Telstra and Optus, which means you can its 4G and 5G coverage to reflect that fact. 

That's not to say that Vodafone's coverage is bad — the telco claims to reach 96% of Australia's 'metropolitan' population (note the precise wording), which is no small feat. However, you will likely notice a steep drop in reach once you move beyond the major cities dotted around our great southern land. 

Thankfully, Darwin is counted amongst those metropolitan areas, and we're happy to report that Vodafone does offer 5G in the Top End, according to nPerf's independent coverage maps — an achievement that rival Optus has yet to tackle.

Unfortunately, a recent report from OpenSignal has revealed that Vodafone offers the slowest 5G download speeds of the three major telcos, with average speeds that are around half as fast as what Telstra and Optus customers are getting.

Despite this, Vodafone has taken out the 5G availability award in that same report, meaning its customers are able to maintain a 5G connection for longer than those on the Telstra or Optus network.

Vodafone mobile plans: Extras, perks and offers

  • Discounted rates for bundled services
  • Excellent international roaming add-on

Despite Telstra and Optus being Australia's two biggest telecommunications companies, it's somewhat surprising that only Vodafone gives customers a reduced rate for bundling multiple services.

For instance, Vodafone customers who sign up to two eligible plans (of AU$30 p/m or more) on the same account, be it phone, tablet or modem-based, are entitled to a 5% 'Bundle & Save' discount on the overall bill.

Not only that, but the discount amount will go up by 5% for each additional service, maxing out at a 20% total discount for five or more bundled plans. 

In other words, bundling your family's mobile phone plans with your home internet bill should save you a significant chunk of change. You could even throw in a PS5 console for AU$22.22 p/m on a 36-month plan, so long as you have at least one mobile and one NBN plan on your account.

Aside from the discounts listed above, Vodafone mobile customers can also take advantage of the company's global reach with one of the best international roaming add-ons you can get — for just AU$5 per day, you can access your usual data allowance in over 100 countries, which we think is unbeatable. And if you do go over your monthly limit, additional gigabytes are just AU$5.

Vodafone mobile plans: customer service and community reviews

  • Call centre support teams primarily based in Australia
  • Predominantly negative online reviews from customers

Vodafone operates in 65 countries across the globe, so you'd be forgiven for assuming that it would mostly use off-shore call centres. In fact, Vodafone Australia's main contact centre is based in Hobart.

However, while the aforementioned contact centre does help people on consumer plans, it's primarily focused on helping business customers. So if you don't manage to get through to the Australian support team, you may end up speaking to someone in an overseas location.

Luckily, Vodafone does have a significant retail presence Down Under, with over 250 physical stores to visit if you'd prefer to solve your matter in-person.

Still, Vodafone has its share of irate customers, based on the online reviews on sites such as Product Review, where it scored 1.5 out of 5, and Trustpilot, where it earned a score of 1.3 out of 5. 

As always, it's important to remember that customers will rarely take to the time to post online comments about a company when they are happy, but are more than willing to leave a scathing review when they're inconvenienced.

Vodafone mobile plans: Bottom line

There's no denying that Telstra and Optus outshine Vodafone when it comes to coverage and download speeds. However, it mostly makes up for its lack of reach with its value-packed plans.

Looking for a mobile plan that offers truckloads of data at a reasonable price? That's where Vodafone shines, with plans that offer significantly more data than its two main rivals. On top of this, you'll receive discounted services if you bundle more than one eligible plan on the same account, which is a great option for families.

And, if you happen to spend most of your time within Australia's major metropolitan cities, you probably won't encounter many coverage issues. That said, if you do reside in one of Australia's more remote regions, you're probably better off going with Telstra of Optus.

Vodafone Mobile may not compete in the budget SIM-Only space, but it does offer great phone plans that start at around $49 a month. Vodafone's mobile plans all come with no excess data charges, 5G connectivity, unlimited standard calls and texts within Australia and the telco's top-value $5-per-day roaming deal.

Since Vodafone's postpaid plans tend to start at a lower price-point than Optus and Telstra, it's a sure bet for those looking for the best value for their money when it comes to the latest flagship smartphones. When a new phone releases, the most affordable option can usually be found at Vodafone in Australia. 

Vodafone recently simplified its plans; reducing the number of options available. Whichever handset you choose, you will pair it with a $49 for 50GB plan, $59 for 180GB or $69 for 360GB. Those prices don't include the monthly handset fees, which will change depending on the handset you choose. 

Each of those plans includes no excess data charges,  the usual unlimited standard national calls and text and access to the Vodafone 5G network. Each plan also offers $5-per-day international roaming and more included international value the more you spend. 

Vodafone mobile value for money

Vodafone's plan range will cover the needs of most phone owners, though there is an absence of  postpaid plans under $30, except when there’s a promotion that brings the typical pricing down. Normally, below $30 is a popular price point for BYO phone shoppers.

Vodafone's plans have changed a few times over the last few years but the current range is generous with data, and tends to compare well to Telstra and Optus, especially if you're in the market for a new smartphone.

We also like that the Vodafone smartphone range extends beyond just iPhones and Samsungs to include handsets from Oppo, Nokia, Motorola and Google. 

Currently, the most popular Vodafone offering is the $49 Small plan, which comes with 50GB of data. Every Vodafone postpaid plan also includes unlimited standard national calls and text, 5G access, no excess data charges and $5-per-day roaming. Plan speeds are slowed to 2Mbps once you've used your included data amount.

One of Vodafone’s better perks across its plan range is the fact that it doesn't charge excess fees. If you use all of your included data, your plan's speeds will be slowed to 2Mbps . 

Besides included max-speed data, the other key difference between Vodafone's mobile plans is the international inclusions. Here's what each plan nets you:

  • $49 Small Plan : Unlimited standard international texts
  • $59 Medium Plan and $69 Large Plan : Unlimited standard international texts and 300 minutes to Zone 2 countries and unlimited minutes and text to Zone 1 countries

Vodafone coverage

Vodafone's network footprint is smaller in comparison to Telstra and Optus, it's true. But truth be told, the most Australians can still get a reliable signal on Vodafone 4G these days. That includes Vodafone's various MVNOs (TPG, Kogan Mobile, etc.).

Like Optus, the coverage of Vodafone's MVNOs is the same as its own 4G network. Telsta is the only provider that restricts part of its 4G network.

If you're worried about whether Vodafone can service your area, take a look at the coverage map below. If your address (and the places you regularly visit) are covered in purple, you should be absolutely fine with Vodafone coverage. There are still other factors that might impact your signal, but the map above is a reliable indication of Vodafone's coverage in Australia. 

Vodafone mobile features and perks

Remarkable as it may sound, Vodafone is one of the only telcos to offer a bundling discount for customers who have multiple services with them. The best part is that you can bundle plans across mobile, tablet, mobile broadband and NBN. The discount is super simple to follow, too: you get 5% off the price of each plan when you have two services, 10% when you have three services, 15% when you have four services, and a whopping 20% off the price of each plan when you have five or more.

Eligible services for bundling include phone, tablet and mobile broadband plans of $30 per month or more, and NBN 50 and NBN 100 services.

Vodafone is also one of the few providers that offers discounted phone plans for seniors , with 10% off all its postpaid plans for eligible customers with a seniors' card.

Speaking of bundling, Vodafone wants to entice gamers to sign up to its services. Vodafone customers with one NBN service and one mobile service can discuss bundling a PlayStation 5 with their plans. Vodafone’s just hiked the prices on its phone plans – are they still good value?

New plans are now more expensive across the board

Vodafone has quietly increased the cost of its mobile plans, with each plan going up by AU$4 a month.

While the price hike only affects new customers, it’s the second time in a year that Vodafone has raised the cost of its mobile plans. Back in April 2023, the majority of Vodafone’s existing postpaid customers were hit with an increase of AU$5 a month .

Vodafone is adding more data to each plan as part of the price rise, but the price increase means that Vodafone’s mobile plans now cost the same as Optus’. Previously, Vodafone was able to distinguish itself from the big three by offering the cheapest plans – not so anymore.

The table below is a comparison of Vodafone’s old vs new pricing.

Is Vodafone still good value?

We’d argue that yes, Vodafone’s plans are still good value, particularly if you want to be with a major telco or you need a new phone you can pay off over time. Vodafone is also a good choice if you frequently travel overseas, as you only need to pay an extra AU$5 a day to use your phone plan as normal (available in over 100 countries).

While the best Vodafone mobile plans now cost the same as Optus’ offerings, you generally get more data with Vodafone – with one notable exception, Optus’ 500GB Plus plan , which costs AU$69 a month for your first 12 months, then increases to AU$89 each month ongoing.

While we think that Vodafone is still the winner in value for money among the three major telcos, it’s not the only aspect to consider when choosing a phone provider. Mobile coverage is also important, and Vodafone’s 4G and 5G footprint is smaller than both Telstra and Optus.

With that said, your options for a good-value mobile plan really open up if you consider smaller providers, known as mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs). These telcos essentially buy access to one of the big three’s networks, and then resell it onto you at a cheaper price.

These telcos are great alternatives if you’ve already got a phone you’re happy with, or you can buy your next phone outright. We have a dedicated guide to the best SIM-only plans , but here’s our pick for January.

Vodafone prepaid price rise: Time for a cheaper mobile plan?

Is getting more data while paying more actually a good deal?

Vodafone is pushing up prices on its prepaid mobile plans .

From April 10, the prices for all 3 of its prepaid starter packs will go up by $5. At the same time, the data allowance on those prepaid plans will also go up by 5GB.

Vodafone lifted the prices of its postpaid plans back in January, so the move isn't unexpected.

But is it worth paying more for your plan, especially given ongoing cost-of-living issues? Finder's Cost Of Living Pressure Gauge ranks the current level of pressure at 78%, which is rated as "extreme".

Can you find a better prepaid plan?

The first question to ask is: do you actually need that much data?

ACCC research shows the average user only uses 12.8GB a month, which is well and truly covered by the new $35 plan.

Prepaid users tend to use even less, with the same research suggesting just 7.5GB a month on average.

So a plan with lower costs is worth considering.

You can also stay on the Vodafone network, assuming that suits you, without actually going through Vodafone itself.

For instance, the TPG Large prepaid plan offers 45GB of data and costs just $10 a month for the first 3 months.

With a prepaid plan, there's no lock-in so it's worth comparing regularly to make sure you're getting the best value.

It’s wise to develop a business plan that articulates your core goals and how you’ll achieve them. You can do this independently or seek the guidance of a professional business consultant.

A business plan might cover:

  • What you’ll offer and how, your target market, your unique selling points, and pricing.

Another critical aspect of business set-up—once you know your business idea has legs—is choosing a business structure that aligns with how you’ll operate. The structure you chose will affect how you’re taxed and your administrative burden.

There are four business structures in Australia:

  • Sole trader: This gives you full control but also means you’re personally responsible for all business liabilities. It’s simpler too: you’ll report your business income in your individual tax return.
  • Partnership: Two or more people who share control and business liabilities. Partnerships must prepare a separate partnership tax return.
  • Trust: A separate legal entity where a single person/entity, the trustee, holds the business’ assets and is responsible for how its run—on behalf of others, known as beneficiaries. Requires a formal trust deed and can be more costly and complex to set-up. Liability is limited where the trustee is a company.
  • Company: A separate legal entity. While your personal liability is limited with a company, it’s also more expensive and complex, requiring registration with ASIC and placing legal responsibilities on the director/s.

It generally pays to seek professional advice if you’re not sure whether a sole trader, partnership, trust or company structure is right for you.

There’s a multitude of different registrations needed to stay above board. Fortunately, you can do many in one online application process via the government’s Business Registration Service .

Here are the key registrations for Australian businesses:

Australian Business Number (ABN)

An ABN is a free, unique identifier you’ll need to:

  • Add to your invoices to show clients and suppliers you’re legitimate.
  • Avoid having businesses you invoice withhold tax.
  • Be able to claim tax credits on business expenses.
  • Set up a domain name with ‘.au’ in the URL.
  • Register for GST and pay as you go (PAYG) withholding.

You’ll need an ABN before you can register your business name—but you can apply for both at once.

If you choose a company structure, you’ll first need to apply for an Australian Company Number (ACN) and company name. Be aware that fees apply .

Note, you’ll receive a separate Tax File Number (TFN) for your business—automatically issued by the Australian Tax Office (ATO)—once you apply for an ABN for a partnership, company or trust.

Business Tax Registrations

Common tax registrations include:

  • Goods and Services Tax (GST)
  • Pay as You Go (PAYG) withholding

As soon your annual business turnover cracks the $75,000 mark, you’re required to register to collect the Goods and Services Tax (GST). So, if you think you’ll be on track to earn more than that in your first year of operation—registering for GST up-front is smart.

According to the ATO , you also must register for GST if:

  • Your business charges passengers for taxi services or limousine travel (including ride sharing).
  • You want to claim Fuel Tax Credits (FTC) or need to register for the Wine Equalisation Tax (WET) or Luxury Car Tax (LCT).

Once you’re registered for GST, you’ll need to complete regular business activity statements (BAS) .

If you’ll be employing people or have company directors to pay, you’ll need to register for PAYGW so you can collect tax from the income—and then report and pay this tax to the ATO. You’ll also need to register for PAYGW if you’ll be paying businesses that don’t provide you with an ABN.

Business Name Registration

Your business name isn’t necessarily how you brand or market yourself. It’s the legal entity name of your business and allows you to operate Australia-wide.

ASIC’s fees for registering and renewing a business name are:

  • $42 for one year
  • $98 for three years

ASIC will send you a reminder by email 30 days before you need to renew your business name registration. A common and misleading tactic targeting business owners is unofficial letters or emails reminding you to renew and pay for your business name registration.

If it isn’t official correspondence from ASIC, you can ignore it. They’re either trying to scam you (the letter or email is fake), or profit from providing a service you don’t need (they add a charge on top of ASIC’s fee). Of course, some people may prefer to deal with a private service provider, accountant or solicitor to manage registrations and renewals—but carefully check their fees and legitimacy beforehand.

Registering a trademark isn’t required, but it could be a savvy way to protect your brand. For example, if another business owner trademarks a similar name to the one you use for your business, they could bring legal action against you.

Trademarking comes at a cost—a minimum of $250 and up to $600 through IP Australia .

You may wish to search existing trademarks before you settle on a business trading name.

Business bank accounts are critical for clean record-keeping for your business, even if you’re a micro business or sole trader. Keeping business funds separate is also a requirement if your business is structured as a company, trust or partnership.

Over a million Australians may be unable to contact triple-0 as two major telcos cut their antiquated 3G networks.

Telstra’s network will be closed on June 30 this year followed by Optus, which will shut its 3G network in September, after Vodafone and TPG shut theirs in December 2023.

Most late model Australian phones are now serviced by either 4G or 5G networks but there are concerns for other devices which still rely on 3G.

Some medical alarms are among them as well as baby monitors, security cameras, cars, EFTPOS Machines, and some tablets.

ABC revealed this week that over a million mobile phones may lose the ability to call triple-0 within months, raising alarm about Australia’s readiness for the 3G network shutdown.

Approximately 113,000 Telstra customers have not upgraded their 3G handsets, while Optus did not disclose a figure.

However, of greater concern to the government is a subset of older 4G-enabled handsets that may not be able to call triple-0 once the 3G networks are switched off because of the way those phones are configured.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland was informed in March that around 740,000 Australians were in that category.

However, a month later, that figure was significantly revised up to over a million.

The leading telcos have announced they plan to repurpose their 3G networks to further extend the coverage of their 4G and 5G networks. However, this process will take some time, which is causing concerns among customers living in rural and remote areas.

“I welcome the industry’s first report to government but am concerned around their disclosure of around one million potentially impacted consumers,” the minister said in a statement.

“I am considering the detail provided and next steps, and the government will have more to say about the 3G switchover soon.”

Ms Rowland did not rule out a delay “if warranted in the public interest”.

“Options exist under law for the government to consider proposals to delay the planned switchover, subject to consultation and procedural processes,” she said.

Telstra customers worried about whether their devices will be impacted by the closure of the 3G network are encouraged to use the company's SMS device checker tool.

Telstra has informed customers at length on what to do if affected, and even how to check if you are.

It stated devices which do not support VoLTE emergency calling will not be able to make an emergency call to triple-0 on the Telstra Mobile Network after June 30.

“If your mobile device doesn’t have Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology, even if it uses 4G data, it will not be able to make voice calls on our network after 30 June 2024,” it informed customers.

“Not all VoLTE enabled devices support emergency VoLTE calling, meaning they will not be able to make an emergency call to triple-0 once 3G closes.

The telco added it may contact customers directly if affected.

“Without taking the recommended action you won’t be able to connect to a network after 30 June 2024,” it warns.

Telstra customers worried about whether their device will be impacted are encouraged by the company to use its “SMS device checker tool”.

By texting 3 to the number 3498, the telco will inform the customer on their connection status.

Optus, which has likened 3G to CDs, MySpace and the BlackBerry , has also encouraged customers to get in touch if they feel they may be affected.

It too told customers it would be proactively engaging those potentially affected via text, email or post.

It claimed the changes would boost “capacity, speed and reliability” of its 4G and 5G networks.
