ChatGPT for Research and Publication: A Step-by-Step Guide

In recent years, the field of NLP has witnessed remarkable advancements, bringing us closer to the realm of humanlike language generation. Among these advancements, ChatGPT, based on the groundbreaking GPT-3.5 architecture developed by OpenAI, stands as an impressive language model capable of generating coherent and contextually relevant text responses. With its ability to understand and respond to user inputs, ChatGPT has opened up new possibilities for various applications, including research and publication. 1 – 3

The traditional process of conducting research and publishing scientific papers has been significantly transformed by the emergence of ChatGPT. Researchers and authors can now leverage the power of this sophisticated language model to streamline and enhance their workflow, leading to improved efficiency and higher-quality publications. However, using ChatGPT effectively in the research and publication domain requires a comprehensive understanding of its capabilities, limitations, and best practices.

In this commentary I offer my thoughts for a step-by-step guide for researchers and authors who seek to harness the potential of ChatGPT in their research endeavors and publication efforts. By exploring various aspects, such as data preprocessing, fine-tuning techniques, prompt engineering, and ethical considerations, this guide will equip researchers with the necessary knowledge to harness the full potential of ChatGPT in their scientific pursuits. Thus, we see that ChatGPT can write an entire title page based on just the title and author details. We notice that ChatGPT has created an email address that is incorrect and needs manual rectification. However, the rest of the title page, including keywords and the running title, is appropriate.

Step 2: Abstract/Summary Creation by chatGPT

ChatGPT can assist in condensing complex information into a clear and engaging abstract/summary, helping researchers communicate the significance and novelty of their research to a wider audience. By leveraging the language proficiency of ChatGPT, researchers can save time and effort in crafting abstracts while ensuring that the key aspects of their study are accurately represented.

In this example, we demonstrate that ChatGPT can create an entire abstract just by using the title alone. However, the more information researchers provide (preferably the entire body of the paper should be entered into chatGPT), the more accurate the abstract becomes.

By collaborating with ChatGPT, researchers can provide key information, such as the background, significance, and objectives of their study. Also, ChatGPT can be used to generate keywords and generate an abbreviations list from the article by using prompts. However, it is important to note that the generated introduction should be reviewed, customized, and refined by the researchers to align with their specific study and writing style.

In the example below, we note that ChatGPT has not only created an introduction but also the objectives of the study, which can then be edited by the human author.

Step 4: Can ChatGPT Create a Literature Review?

Yes, ChatGPT can help generate a literature review, but it is important to note that it may not have access to the most up-to-date research articles and studies due to copyrights and limited access to some journals. Additionally, a literature review typically requires a comprehensive analysis of multiple sources, so the generated response may not cover all relevant studies. Nonetheless, it can assist in providing a basic literature review on a given topic, which will need human authors to add to and edit it.

As we can see, ChatGPT is not as good at giving a detailed review of the literature as it is at summarizing contents or creating an introduction. Thus, its use is limited, if there is any at all, in this section of the paper.

Step 5: Can ChatGPT Assist in Brainstorming the Methodology of Studies?

ChatGPT can be a helpful tool in conceptualizing the methodology for research papers. By engaging in a conversation with ChatGPT, researchers can discuss their research objectives, study design, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques. ChatGPT’s natural language understanding allows it to provide suggestions and insights based on its knowledge base and understanding of research methodologies. Although ChatGPT can assist in generating ideas and providing guidance, it is important for researchers to critically evaluate and adapt the suggestions to align with their specific research goals and requirements.

Although the methodology is something that is unique to each paper and needs a human researcher to conceptualize it, we see in this example that ChatGPT can assist by giving ideas and examples based on the input of the title by the human researcher. Thus, ChatGPT can be part of brainstorming sessions when conceptualizing a study, although this section needs significant editing by a human, unlike the introduction or summary.

Step 6: Do Not Use ChatGPT for Fabricating Patient Data or Results!

This section of the paper must be authentic, and ChatGPT has a limited role, if any, because patient data have to be original. ChatGPT also currently cannot analyze clinical data compared with statistical software, like SPSS Statistics and Base SAS. However, Microsoft appears to be developing an Excel copilot that uses AI to create graphs and plots, and its use needs to be evaluated once it is released to the public. 6

Step 7: Discussion and Conclusions

This section of the paper can be generated by ChatGPT if all results are pasted as input; however, this section also needs manual editing because inaccuracies are common. By discussing their research with ChatGPT, researchers can also identify potential limitations, discuss the broader implications of their findings, and propose future research directions. Although ChatGPT can generate suggestions and facilitate the thought process, it is important for researchers to critically evaluate the information provided and ensure that the Discussion and Conclusion sections align with the specific research objectives and findings of their study. Ultimately, ChatGPT can serve as a supportive tool in developing a comprehensive and well-rounded discussion and conclusion for research papers.

Step 8: References

As per the author's experience, although ChatGPT is capable of creating references for an article, most of them are incorrect. So, using ChatGPT for creating references is not recommended. However, ChatGPT can convert references into any journaling style if the references are entered into ChatGPT and it is asked to convert them into a specific style.

Disadvantages of Using ChatGPT in Research

Although ChatGPT offers numerous advantages for assisting in the writing of research papers, there are also some important potential disadvantages to consider:

  • Lack of domain expertise: ChatGPT is a general-purpose language model trained on a diverse range of Internet text, which means it may lack the specific domain expertise required for certain research topics. It may generate responses that are not accurate or well informed in specialized fields, potentially leading to incorrect or misleading information in research papers.
  • Inconsistency and variability: ChatGPT’s responses can be inconsistent and vary depending on the input phrasing or prompt formulation. This can lead to unpredictability in generating reliable and coherent content, requiring additional effort to refine and ensure accuracy in research papers.

  • Biases and ethical considerations: Language models like ChatGPT can inadvertently reflect biases present in the training data. These biases may perpetuate existing societal or cultural biases in research papers, potentially leading to unfair or discriminatory content.   • Lack of interpretability: ChatGPT’s decision-making process is complex and not easily interpretable. Researchers may struggle to understand the reasoning behind the model’s generated responses, making it challenging to assess the reliability and credibility of the information provided. Ensuring transparency and interpretability in research papers becomes more challenging with such models. ChatGPT should cite the sources for its data, like Google Bard does.
  • Plagiarism concerns: Because of its vast training data from the Internet, ChatGPT may inadvertently generate text that resembles or replicates existing content without proper citation or attribution. Researchers must be cautious about unintentional plagiarism and ensure that generated content is appropriately referenced and original. So, all ChatGPt-generated articles need to be double checked using antiplagiarism software.

The article was fluent, insightful and presented in the expected structure for a scientific paper, but researchers say that there are many hurdles to overcome before the tool can be truly helpful.

You'll need to clearly specify you need reliable and accurate sources. While this won't necessarily work, it may remind the AI to give you more useful responses. For example:

Please provide me with reputable sources to support my argument on... (whatever the topic is you're looking at)

You can also tell ChatGPT the kinds of sources you want. If you're looking for scholarly articles, peer-reviewed journals, books, or authoritative websites, mention these preferences explicitly. For example:

Please recommend peer-reviewed journals that discuss... (and here, repeat what you discussed earlier in your conversation)

When dealing with abstract concepts or theories, request that ChatGPT provide a conceptual framework along with real-world examples. Here's an example:

Can you describe the principles of Vygotsky's Social Development Theory and provide real-world examples where these principles were applied, including sources for these examples?

This approach not only gives you a theoretical explanation but also practical instances where you can trace back the original sources or case studies.

Another idea is to use sources that don't have link rot (that is, they're no longer online at the URL that ChatGPT might know). Be careful with this, though, because ChatGPT doesn't know of things after 2021. So, while you might be tempted to use a prompt like this:

Please provide me with sources published within the past five years

Instead, consider using a prompt like this:

Please provide sources published from 2019 through 2021.

And, as always, don't assume that whatever ChatGPT gives you is accurate. It's still quite possible it will completely fabricate answers, even to the point of making up the names of what seem like academic journals. It's a fibber . It's a sometimes helpful tool, but also a fibber.

4. Attempt to verify/validate the provided sources

Keep in mind this golden rule about ChatGPT-provided sources: ChatGPT is more often wrong than right .

Across the many times I've asked ChatGPT for URL sources, roughly half are just plain bad links. Another 25% or more are links that go to topics completely or somewhat unrelated to the one you're trying to source.

For example, I asked for sources on a backgrounder for the phrase "trust but verify", generally popularized by US President Ronald Reagan. I got a lot of sources back, but most didn't actually exist. I got some back that correctly took me to active pages on the Reagan Presidential Library site, but the page topic had nothing to do with the phrase in question.

I had a bit better luck with my learning theory question from step 1. There, I got back offline texts from the people who I knew from my studies who had actually worked on those theories. I also got back URLs, but again, only about two in 10 actually worked or were accurate.

But don't despair. The idea isn't to expect ChatGPT to provide sources that you can immediately use. If you instead think of ChatGPT as a research assistant, it will give you some great starting places. Use the names of the articles (which may be completely fake or just not accessible) and drop them into Google. That process will give you some interesting search queries, which will more than likely lead to some interesting reads and material that can legitimately go into your research.

Also, keep in mind that you're not limited to using ChatGPT. Just because ChatGPT exists doesn't mean you should forget all the tools available to researchers and students. Do your own web searches. Check with primary sources and subject matter experts if they're available to you. If you're in school, you can even ask your friendly neighborhood librarian for help.

Don't forget that there are many excellent traditional sources. For example, Google Scholar and JSTOR  provide access to a wide range of academically acceptable resources you can cite with reasonable confidence.

One final point: if you merely cut and paste ChatGPT sources into whatever research you're doing, you're likely to get stung. Use it for clues, not as a way to avoid the real work of research.

5. Consider upgrading to ChatGPT Plus

While ChatGPT Plus is more expensive (it's $20/month), it has numerous advantages over the free version. In particular, it uses the GPT-4 model, and it adds support for both Code Interpreter and plugins. For our purposes here, the WebPilot plugin can prove very helpful.

WebPilot gives ChatGPT the ability to search the web. This effectively eliminates the 2021 cutoff point for the ChatGPT knowledge base. It also allows ChatGPT to access the web to find more current sources and citations. This has the advantage of reducing the link rot symptoms that come from using a 2021 database in 2023 and beyond.

Do be aware, however, that even with current web access, ChatGPT can still hallucinate. In other words, the AI will still make stuff up, including valid-seeming sources that don't exist and have never existed. Continue to double-check everything.

How do you put sources in APA format? 

APA style is a citation style that's often required in academic programs. APA stands for American Psychological Association, and I've often thought that they invented these style rules in order to get more customers. But, seriously, the definitive starting point for APA style is the Purdue OWL . It provides a wide range of style guidelines.

Be careful: Online style formatters might not do a complete job, and you may get your work returned by your professor. It pays to do the work yourself -- and use care doing it. 

How can I make ChatGPT provide more reliable sources for its responses?

This is a good question. I have found that sometimes -- sometimes -- if you ask ChatGPT to give you more sources, or re-ask for sources, it will give you new listings. If you tell ChatGPT that the sources it provided were erroneous, it will sometimes give you better ones. It may also just apologize and give excuses. Another approach is to re-ask your original question with a different focus or direction, and then ask for sources for the new answer.

Once again, my best advice is to avoid treating ChatGPT as a tool that writes for you and more as a writing assistant. Asking for sources, so you can simply cut and paste a ChatGPT response, is pretty much plagiarism. But using ChatGPT's response and any sources you can tease out of it as clues for further research and writing is a completely legitimate way to use this intriguing new tool.

Why are ChatGPT sources often so wrong? 

For some links, it's just link rot. Since all sources are at least three years old, some links may have changed. Other sources are of indeterminate age. Since we don't have a full listing of all of ChatGPT's sources, it's impossible to tell how valid they were to begin with.

But since ChatGPT was trained mostly without human supervision , we know that most of its sources weren't vetted, and so could be wrong, made-up, or completely non-existent.

The research paper we will summarize in this tutorial is from ScienceDirect . It is a paper about artificial intelligence and unemployment in high-tech developed countries. You can access the paper here .

  Now that we have accessed the research paper, we can ask ChatGPT to summarize it for us. First, though, we will need to make a slight modification to the prompt.  

Modify Summary Prompt

The default prompt that comes with the ChatGPT Summary for Chrome extension instructs ChatGPT to summarize an article into 5 main points.

In our case, we want it to summarize the research paper as one short paragraph. Therefore, we will adjust the prompt setting to reflect that.

So, go to the extension icon on your Google Chrome browser menu bar, right-click on it, and select “Options”. In the prompt area, enter the following prompt: Summarize the main points of the paper as one short paragraph and click “Save Prompt”.

  With that, ChatGPT should summarize the research paper in a short paragraph as instructed.

Simply go back to the research paper and click the ChatGPT Summary for Chrome extension icon, and it will automatically summarize the paper in a popup widget like so.

In evaluative bibliometrics and higher education studies, one is frequently confronted with the task of comparing institutions with similar institutions. In this Letter to the Editor, a simple approach is discussed which applies ChatGPT. Although the approach seems to produce promising results (tested with an example at the level of research institute and of a university), it is necessary to investigate it systematically based on a sample including many institutions before it should be applied in research evaluation. The challenge in systematic investigations is that ChatGPT provides the user with different answers on the sane request (missing reliability).

Avoid common mistakes on your manuscript.

In evaluative bibliometrics, one is frequently confronted with the task of comparing focal institutions with similar institutions (e.g., Frietsch et al., 2022 ). Institutional performance cannot be absolutely assessed but is meaningful only relative to other, similar institutions: by the comparison with similar institutions, one knows the standing of the focal institution. Although these comparisons are central to research evaluation, only a few attempts have been published to identify and select similar institutions based on bibliometric data. The most recent paper by Wang and Jeppsson ( 2022 ) has been published in Scientometrics : the authors “define an appropriate benchmark as a well-connected research environment, in which researchers investigate similar topics and publish a similar number of publications compared to a given research organization during the same period. Four essential attributes for the evaluation of benchmarks are research topics, output, connectedness, and scientific impact” (p. 7557). The approach by Wang and Jeppsson ( 2022 ) has been developed based on preliminary studies by Noyons et al. ( 1999 ), Carayol et al. ( 2012 ), and Andersen et al. ( 2017 ). Complementarily, higher education scholars extensively discussed how to identify and compare similar Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) using multicriteria approaches (Daraio et al., 2014 ), since it has been shown that comparisons of university performance are systematically affected by institutional characteristics such as subject profiles (Bornmann et al., 2013 ). A tool to identify similar HEIs combining multiple criteria has been developed by the U-MULTIRANK project (van Vught et al., 2012 ).

Although these approaches may lead to valid approaches for identifying and selecting benchmark institutions, the approaches are complex and need the access to well prepared (bibliometric and institutional) data (Lepori et al., 2022 ). In this Letter to the Editor, another approach is introduced which may be more simple and produce helpful results by giving hints to possible benchmark institutions. van Eck and Waltman ( 2024 ) used the GPT 3.5 Turbo LLM (OpenAI) for the task to label the research areas of a set of papers based on their titles. Since GPT produced promising results in their study, we requested ChatGPT 3.5 (the freely available variant) to provide a list of similar institutions for a focal institution. We asked ChatGPT to explain itself (“ Please explain what ChatGPT is ”) and received the following answer: “ ChatGPT is a variant of the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) model developed by OpenAI, specifically tailored for conversational tasks. It’s designed to engage in dialogue with users in a manner that feels natural and human-like. Like other GPT models, ChatGPT is trained on a vast amount of text data to understand language patterns and generate coherent responses ” (date of reply: March 19, 2024). The potential of ChatGPT for science studies has been the object of several studies in the informetric community (see Farhat et al., 2024 ; Lund & Wang, 2023 ; Ray, 2023 ; for a review) and a debate has emerged on its advantages and problems (Gordijn & ten Have, 2023 ; Korzynski et al., 2023 ; Rahman & Watanobe, 2023 ; Sandnes, 2024 ).

The goal of this letter is to open the debate on the potential of ChatGPT in identifying benchmark institutions at the level of institute, research center, and HEIs. As examples in this study, we selected as institute the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University and as HEI the Leiden University. In both cases, we can assess the delivered results from ChatGPT for their appropriateness by direct knowledge of the field and of the institution. The authors work in quantitative science studies with a focus on research evaluation since around 20 years.

At the institute level, the request to ChatGPT was as follows:

The Centre for Science and Technology Studies at the Leiden University is active in science of science studies using bibliometric data in many research projects. In a benchmarking study, I would like to compare the research performance of the Centre for Science and Technology Studies with similar institutions. These institutions should be similar with respect to two characteristics: (1) They should be active in the same research areas in recent years. (2) They should have similar resources as the CWTS such as the number of researchers. Which institutions would you recommend for this benchmarking task? Please consider the following restrictions in your answer: (1) Only point to institutions other than the Centre for Science and Technology Studies. (2) List only the five most similar institutions. (3) The institutions should be active in 2022. (4) The institutions should be located in Europe. (5) The list should not contain programs at universities.

ChatGPT provided the following results (March 2024):

Based on the criteria provided, here are five institutions in Europe that could be suitable for benchmarking the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University:

INGENIO (CSIC-UPV)—Institute for Innovation and Knowledge Management, Spain

Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS), Austria

Institute for Managing Sustainability (IMS), Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria

Institute for Future Studies (IFF), Sweden

Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI, Germany.

Against the backdrop of our experiences in the science of science field, the provided institutions from ChatGPT seem reasonable. Depending on the focus of research in the evaluation study, the institutions are more or less suitable. We miss, however, institutions such as the German Center For Higher Education Studies (DZHW) or the Expertise Centre for Research and Development monitoring (ECOOM) in Belgium.

At the HEI level, the request to ChatGPT was as follows:

The University of Leiden is a medium-size research university covering most subject domains and with a very good position in international rankings. It also includes a large medical center. In a benchmarking study, I would like to compare the research performance of the University of Leiden with similar institutions. These should be similar with respect of two characteristics: (1) they should be active in similar research domains, (2) they should have similar resources at the University of Leiden such as the number of professors or the budget. Please consider the following restrictions in your answer: (1) Only point to institutions other than the University of Leiden. (2) List only the five most similar institutions. (3) The institutions should be active in 2022. (4) The institutions should be located in Europe .

Certainly, considering your restrictions, here are five European universities similar to the University of Leiden in terms of research domains and resources:

University of Amsterdam (Netherlands): The University of Amsterdam is also a leading research university in the Netherlands with a wide range of subject domains covered. It has notable strengths in fields such as social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. It has a comparable size and budget to the University of Leiden.

University of Utrecht (Netherlands): Utrecht University is another prominent research university in the Netherlands with strengths across various disciplines, including social sciences, natural sciences, and humanities. It boasts a similar research profile and resources to the University of Leiden.

University of Groningen (Netherlands): The University of Groningen is known for its strong research programs across different domains, including science, engineering, social sciences, and humanities. It is comparable to the University of Leiden in terms of research output and resources.

University of Copenhagen (Denmark): The University of Copenhagen is one of the top universities in Europe and offers a broad spectrum of research areas, including natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. It is similar to the University of Leiden in terms of research diversity and resources.

University of Edinburgh (United Kingdom): The University of Edinburgh is a prestigious research-intensive institution in the UK, with strengths across various disciplines, including medicine, sciences, social sciences, and humanities. While not geographically in mainland Europe, it matches the criteria of being similar in research domains and resources.

These institutions are renowned for their research activities, cover a wide range of subject domains, and have resources comparable to the University of Leiden.

A cursory look and a comparison with data from the European Tertiary Education Register (Lepori et al., 2023 ) suggests that these are indeed good peers of the University of Leiden, with a similar position in international rankings, similar size and subject concentration, and having a medical school (like the focal university). ChatGPT was also effective in excluding highly-ranked universities which do not match some of the criteria indicated, such as technical universities or universities without medical schools. Of course, we could point to some additional peers such as University of Ghent or Gothenburg.

Our analysis of using ChatGPT has been purely illustrative, but it shows that, if a sensible querying strategy is adopted, ChatGPT might be able to suggest reasonable peers. We made the experience that one cannot expect valid results from ChatGPT in all cases. Another experience is missing reliability: The same query leads to different results at different time points (Thelwall, 2024 ). These experiences make clear that it is necessary to involve an expert in the search who inspect and assess the results. We strongly recommend that the institutions from ChatGPT should only be used as hints to possible benchmark institutions. ChatGPT opens several interesting questions, such as how to best design querying strategies, for which types of institutions results are (un)reliable, and whether approaches could be developed to combine data-based benchmarking tools with generative AI by exploiting the respective complementarities.

Some informetric scholars have expressed concerns on the use of ChatGPT and highlighted its limitations, arguing that it will never reach the precision of the quantitative approaches developed by our field (Gordijn & ten Have, 2023 ; Sandnes, 2024 ). While we respect this argument, it should be considered, first, that generative AI tools are developing rapidly and might provide much better results in the future; as of identifying peers, their results are already now reasonably good. The output of ChatGPT can be improved by giving (human) feedback “to produce more consistently useful or correct results. Feedback can also help it learn to avoid controversial or illegal responses” (Thelwall, 2024 ). Second, generative AI tools are much easier to use than data-based benchmarking tools and have attractive interactive features, where the user can easily dialogue with the tool; hence, they might turn to be a serious competitor for evaluative purposes than the tools developed by our community, particularly for students, institutional managers, and policy analysts.
