Topic 9: Does Organisational Culture Influence the Leadership Type that a Company Should Adopt?

Research Aim: This research will argue whether companies should hire leaders concerning their culture or not. Organisational culture and leadership are interconnected. Thus companies that do not operate according to their culture struggle to grow exponentially. This research will aim to focus on the possible relationship between leadership and organisational culture. The research will be evidence-based.

Topic 10: Organisational Culture and International Business Competition: Are they Interrelated?

Research Aim: Organisational culture plays a huge role in making a company competitive internationally. When a business’s culture is motivating to all employees and identifies the right culture for its employees, there is every likelihood of rapid growth for both the company and the employees. The research will explore how the two concepts are interrelated.

Important Notes:

As a management student looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing management theories – i.e., to add value and interest to your research topic.

The management field is vast and interrelated to many other academic disciplines like operations management , business , business administration , MBA , human resource management and more. That is why creating a management dissertation topic that is particular, sound, and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field is imperative.

We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic based on your entire research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong; your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, there is a possibility that the study is not viable.

This impacts your time and efforts in writing your dissertation , as you may end up in the cycle of rejection at the initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.

Keeping our advice in mind while developing a research topic will allow you to pick one of the best management dissertation topics that fulfil your requirement of writing a research paper and adds to the body of knowledge.

Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.

Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Please look at some of our sample management dissertation topics to get an idea for your own dissertation.

The purpose is to highlight and discuss the selected research area’s relative weaknesses and strengths while identifying research gaps. Break down the topic and key terms that can positively impact your dissertation and your tutor.
  • Methodology : The data collection and analysis methods and techniques employed by the researcher are presented in the Methodology chapter, which usually includes research design , research philosophy, research limitations, code of conduct, ethical consideration, data collection methods, and data analysis strategy .
  • Findings and Analysis : Findings of the research are analysed in detail under the Findings and Analysis chapter. All key findings/results are outlined in this chapter without interpreting the data or drawing any conclusions. It can be useful to include graphs, charts, and tables in this chapter to identify meaningful trends and relationships.
  • Discussion and Conclusion : The researcher presents his interpretation of results in this chapter and states whether the research hypothesis has been verified or not. An essential aspect of this section is establishing the link between the results and evidence from the literature. Recommendations with regards to implications of the findings and directions for the future may also be provided. Finally, a summary of the overall research, along with final judgments, opinions, and comments, must be included in the form of suggestions for improvement.
  • References : Make sure to complete this by your University’s requirements
  • Bibliography
  • Appendices : Any additional information, diagrams, and graphs used to complete the dissertation but not part of the dissertation should be included in the Appendices chapter. Essentially, the purpose is to expand the information/data.

The Most Popular PhD Thesis Topics In Strategic Management

A PhD thesis is your chance to add a voice into the field of strategic management. The gist about your voice is captured in your topic. While a topic is a single word, it carries the weight of the entire paper. It acts as a door through which a reader enters into your mind or begins to view your ideas. As such, it must be attractive and captivating. Here are some of the exciting topics to consider in strategic management.

  • The relationship between corporate social responsibility and financial performance
  • An assessment of expectations of consumers on brands and the social life of their top managers
  • Is attention to personality more important than academic qualification when selecting top managers?
  • Assessing the influence that charisma of a leader has on the perception of consumers
  • Is there a correlation between the personality of a CEO and the motivation of its employees?
  • The effect of outward sourcing on performance of a company during rebranding phase
  • Ways of reducing bias in employee evaluation by managers
  • What would cause an employee to be blatantly unethical?
  • Should direct managers be allowed to evaluate the performance of their juniors?
  • Why entrepreneurs become poor managers
  • The dangers of managers attracting persons with personalities and qualities similar to theirs
  • Managing a transition into a multinational brand
  • How to effectively manage generation Y in a traditional work environment
  • The management disruptions that come with technology
  • Impartiality when managing family businesses

The title or topic for your thesis will invite a reader to peruse through your paper. Since this is the first step, what will keep the person interested in your work until the end?

  • Facts - at PhD level, you will not be forgiven for misrepresenting facts. Read widely and evaluate or verify all the information you get before including it in your paper. You are required to refer from credible books, articles, journals and other approved materials. Your committee will guide you accordingly.
  • Cohesiveness - a reader should easily follow your arguments and identify a running line of thought. The ideas must be connected and add value to each other. This relationship makes your arguments water tight and believable.
  • Proper Language - language is used to communicate ideas. It strengthens them or weakens them depending on how you use it. Find the right words to express your arguments. They should be appropriate to strategic management. Edit your thesis to get rid of errors that distort your arguments.

MBA Thesis Topics in Strategic Management

Anthony Fonseca

Debate Topics for Business

The "Occupational Outlook Handbook" notes that the job market for management analysts is likely to have a 22 percent rise within the next few years, which is higher than average compared to the overall job market. These analysts, or consultants, are educated and trained to examine a business and propose improvements. To work in such a field, you will likely need an MBA, or Master of Business Administration, which may require you write a thesis.

Theses Defined

A thesis can be viewed as a mini-dissertation in that both require original research, intense writing under the mentoring of a faculty member, a rigid schedule, and a defense. The two differ in some ways, mainly in scope, length, breadth and research and writing time. While most Ph.D. candidates will spend one to two years on a dissertation, master’s candidates and seniors or honors students who write theses will likely have one semester to research and write, although some master's programs will allow up to year for a thesis. While a dissertation will average 200 to 300 pages, a thesis will average 30 to 60 pages.

Topics in Workforce Management

With the recent emphasis in the workplace on austerity measures, profit margins and workforce management, this area of management offers many opportunities for thesis research. Of particular value at the moment will be theses that deal with how temporary staffing firms can be used as valuable resources. On the other hand, some businesses look to develop their current workforce, so studies of developing human resources within strategic priorities will make excellent topics, as would a discussion of the role of governance in the workplace.

Topics on Customer Relations

The backbone of any business is its customers. The American Society for Quality (ASQ) states, "Organizations of all types and sizes have come to realize that their main focus must be to satisfy their customers." Such customer satisfaction surveys require that management understand who their customers are, as opposed to who they are perceived to be, and what their customers really want. For this reason, theses on customer satisfaction will lead to important research that will make an MBA candidate marketable. Topics along these lines would include empirical studies of the relationship between competition and customers, research on the quality of service as it pertains to strategic customer relationships, and discussions of supply chain management and its effect on strategic consumer management.

Customer satisfaction issues make excellent thesis topics.

Topics in Information Technology

With information technology becoming the foundation upon which businesses are being built, theses that research issues such as effective project management environments for software development, or the impact of information technology networks on strategic planning will be very welcome in MBA programs. You could also investigate topics like the role of virtual file management (the cloud) on workload management, the effects of real time information on strategic decisions on a particular company, or how schools at various levels use information systems in their planning and educational objectives.

The Key Is Strategy

The bottom line in business is strategic planning, as businesses must look to long-term solutions in order to compete or even survive in a fast-paced society informed by both fads and technological innovations. MBA students writing theses should concentrate on how their research fits into the overall idea of the strategic business plan. To that end, some thesis topics could be best practice studies of companies known for effectively using human resources and information technology. Finally, topics in areas like strategic risk taking, entrepreneurial management and strategic innovative leadership will prove excellent choices.

Students in the program are expected to master graduate-level microeconomic theory and econometrics. In addition, they are expected to devote substantial time to mastering one additional complementary discipline, such as psychology, sociology, or political science, and developing expertise in research methodologies suited to their particular interests, such as qualitative analysis, designing effective fieldwork, and analysis of survey data.

Students in the Strategy doctoral program work closely with faculty in the Strategy Unit. In addition to the doctoral program in Strategy, the Strategy unit offers a program in Business Economics , which is designed to attract students interested in pursuing research using a purely economics-based methodology.

Curriculum & Coursework

Our programs are full-time degree programs which officially begin in August. Students are expected to complete their program in five years. Typically, the first two years are spent on coursework, at the end of which students take a field exam, and then another three years on dissertation research and writing.

The program requires a minimum of 13 semester long doctoral courses. Students in the Strategy program complete courses in the areas of business management theory, economic theory, quantitative research methods, academic field seminars, and two MBA elective curriculum courses. In addition to HBS courses, students may take courses at other Harvard Schools and MIT.

Research & Dissertation

Students in strategy begin research in their first year typically by working with a faculty member. By their third and fourth years, most students are launched on a solid research and publication stream. The dissertation may take the form of three publishable papers or one longer dissertation.

Examples of thesis research include: the relationship between non-market experience and the use and outcome of patent strategies by pharmaceutical firms; the antecedents and consequences of corporate strategy decision-making, specifically focusing on divestitures and governance; the impact of religion on individual financial choices and institutional structures; innovation in emerging markets; and the causal effect of incentive policy reform, expatriates and social relationships on innovation.

Business/Management Dissertation & Theses

While the ideas we’ve presented above are a decent starting point for finding a business-related research topic, they are fairly generic and non-specific. So, it helps to look at actual dissertations and theses to see how this all comes together.

Below, we’ve included a selection of research projects from various management-related degree programs (e.g., MBAs, DBAs, etc.) to help refine your thinking. These are actual dissertations and theses, written as part of Master’s and PhD-level programs, so they can provide some useful insight as to what a research topic looks like in practice.

Looking at these titles, you can probably pick up that the research topics here are quite specific and narrowly-focused , compared to the generic ones presented earlier. This is an important thing to keep in mind as you develop your own research topic. That is to say, to create a top-notch research topic, you must be precise and target a specific context with specific variables of interest . In other words, you need to identify a clear, well-justified research gap.

Free and Open Source Software has not only increased researchers’ interest about community-driven software development, but lately, interest from commercial actors increased as well. In addition, some scientists have claimed that Open Source Software has entered a new phase: OSS 2.0. Even so, a coherent way of analyzing commercial Open Source ventures is still missing.

Commercial Open Source firms’ strategies are often described using the term “business models”. However, these models often lack stringent structures and have been used primarily to describe the firms’ offerings and methods to earn revenue.

Through the adaptation of an existing, firmly theoretically-based analytical business model framework, this thesis suggests a new analysis model for studying for-profit Open Source companies. In addition, the framework is generically constructed, ensuring its usability for other industries as well. The model consists of three elements: market positions, operational platform and offering .

This particular study concerned four software product vendors, all of which base their products on Open Source Software. When analyzing their business, insights were made about how these firms operated. The result show that there are certain key elements and factors that determine if a company has a sustainable business or not. From the analysis framework, three elements were refined. The main Open Source Software project connects the market positions and the operational platform; and from the offering, the product and service and the revenue model were very important.

The study identified eight key factors which influenced the elements: brand for the product, the company and the Open Source Software project; community , that is the sum of the non-paying users and developers connected to Open Source Software projects; resources , which are community-based resources such as development and testing; legitimacy, the perceived legitimacy regarding licenses and the revenue models; control, i.e. the control the firm has of the software; ability to charge , or how the company can charge for its services; customers , the paying users; and finally volume , which is the number of paying customers.

The findings also indicate that companies interested in working with the open-source community have to be able to balance the demands from both their customers and the community in order to benefit and gain competitive advantage.

─ There is a general acceptance that Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) are a primary source of value and have taken a center stage in the definition, operation and performance of most business organisations. However, their use within the manufacturing sector in developing countries remains inconsistent. This article investigated the role of KMS in enhancing the export performance of firms operating within the manufacturing sector in Zimbabwe. The study used a quantitative approach in which a survey questionnaire was distributed to 555 managers drawn from 185 manufacturing firms based in Harare. Data analyses involved the use of descriptive statistics, Spearman correlations and regression analysis. The results of the study showed that combined IT/social driven KMS exerted the greatest impact on export performance. The availability of both information technology centered and social centered KMS influences export performance by improving the firm's export strategy, export commitment, export orientation, export growth, export sales, export profits and export market share.

Knowledge is identified as a very important component of organization core competency. It reduces the amount of time spent in looking for the information and subject matter expertise. The Knowledge management can extract the employee knowledge and convert it into organization's knowledge for future benefit of the organization. Organizational knowledge is the sum and product of individual knowledge. The employee opinion on knowledge management system (KMS) practices tools and processes in a bank is highly needed to understand the challenges in implementation of it in the bank and to develop strategies for the strengthening the KMS in banks. This article focuses the employee opinion on importance, awareness, strategy, infrastructure, technology, resources, practices, constraints on KMS in a private sector commercial bank, ICICI bank. Through survey research and factor analysis the determinants of the KMS in banks are obtained as knowledge development factor, technological factor, knowledge resource factor, knowledge management initiative factor and HR practices factor. Using the regression analysis the relationship between the general opinion of employees in the bank on KMS and the determinants of KMS implementation is studied. The employee perception towards constraints on effective implementation of KMS and suggestions for strengthening the KMS in the bank are also discussed. Through the study it is observed that all determinants have a positive impact on participation of employee in the KMS implementation in the bank. This study provides the Indian commercial banks a bench mark for effective and efficient implementation of KMS.

This paper aims to examine the views of the global knowledge management (KM) community on the research area of KM and business performance and identify key future research themes. An interview study spanning 222 informants in 38 countries was launched to collect data on KM expert views concerning the future research needs of the KM field. The value contribution of KM requires more research despite experts agreeing on the complexities involved in solving this challenge. Further research areas identified were related to the influence of KM to support business strategy, intellectual capital, decision-making, knowledge sharing, organizational learning, innovation performance, productivity and competitive advantage. The sample is dominated by European-based KM experts and the self-selecting sampling approach that was used by relying on the networks of each partner could have biased the structure of this sample. The recognition of the complexity to demonstrate the value contribution of KM...

The role of consumer identity in access-based consumption

  • Behavioural economics

On 15 May 2024 Katrine Berg Nødtvedt will hold a trial lecture on a prescribed topic and defend her thesis for the PhD degree at NHH.

Katrine B. Nødtvedt, PhD Candidate, Department of Strategy and Management, NHH.

The general topic of the PhD thesis is the role of consumer identity in access-based consumption.

Research shows that people prefer products that are associated with their identity. However, most of this research has only looked at product ownership. This thesis includes three articles that investigate whether and when identity affects choices when people use access-based consumption, such as renting or sharing.

The first article focuses on how group identity can result in discrimination in the sharing economy. Results from three experiments showed that when an identical Airbnb apartment is presented with a racial minority host, people report more negative attitudes and intentions towards it, and are less likely to choose the apartment over a standard hotel room.

In the second article Nødtvedt investigates whether people who identify strongly with a product domain such as fashion, are more or less likely to want to own (vs. rent) products in that domain. Findings from five studies indicate that strongly fashion-identified consumers prefer to buy (vs. rent) clothes for a formal event, but the relationship is weak and can be affected by e.g. the number of consumption events.

Drivers behind tax non-compliance

Article three investigates how others perceive users of sharing services. Results from a large experiment showed that car-sharing users were only perceived as more trustworthy when their motive for sharing was pro-environmental.

In conclusion, this thesis contributes to social psychology and consumer research literatures with new evidence showing the effects of social and personal identity in access-based consumption.
