  • Reading time: 4 mins read

Games are compulsory in every school as physical development along with mental development is essential. All students are not necessarily good in studies. Some are good in sports.

Much to the joy of each student the Sports Day is one of the major events in the school. Every year my school celebrates the Sports Day in the month of November. There is a big playground where the event takes place. The preparations are made much in advance. A day earlier the tent is put up. Chairs are arranged in rows

along the boundary wall of the ground so that the invited parents and non-participating students can sit and watch the happenings. The most important person present in the school on this day is the chief guest who is invited to preside over the function. .

The Chief Guest unfurled the flag. He gave a short encouraging speech and declared the sports meet open. The function began with the march past of all the participating students in their smart white dresses. Then the race began. Our sports teacher blew the whistle for the race to began and another teacher noted the time with the help of a stop watch. A photographer took the photos. There were 100 metres, 200 metres and half a mile races. I took part in 200 meters race and won a second place.

The most interesting race of 50 metres was specially held for the tiny-tots of the school. Everyone enjoyed the scene and cheered the little ones. Funny events like potato race, lemon race, three legged race and sack were a lot of fun. After this there were the high jump and long jump events. My friend beat all others in high jump. Another exciting event was the tug of war between the students and the teachers.

A Sports Day in My School Short Essay

A Sports Day in My School Short Essay

A Sports Day in My School Short Essay:

Like studies, sports are also necessary. If studies is for the soul, sports are for the body. No one can deny the truth that a healthy mind can reside only in a healthy body. If one is not healthy, one cannot pursue his studies properly.

That is why sports are an important part of the school. However, some students are good at their studies. Others are good at sports. There are very few students who are good at both. I am one of those who are good at both.

Our school celebrates Sports Day in February every year. This year, it was celebrated on the 14th of February. The Governor of Delhi was the chief guest.

The school building was white-washed and polished. The school playground was tastefully decorated. On one side, there was the pavilion. On the side, a gateway was made.

The chief guest arrived on time. The police had made strict security arrangements. He was received at the gate by the Principal, members of the staff and athletes. He was introduced to the athletes. Then he was presented with a guard of honour.

Immediately thereafter, the sports commenced. The sports began with a 100-metre race. The race started with the bang of a pistol. Time was recorded with the help of a stopwatch. I missed the first position by 22 seconds. I stood second. It was not a bad performance. Similarly, 200-metre and 500-metre races were also held. The name of those securing first, second and third positions was announced.

The long jump and high jump competitions were very exciting. I topped the high-jump performance. Many other events such as shot-put and hammer-throw were also held. It was all fun to witness the three-legged race, matki race and potato race. These events sent even the most serious spectators to laughter.

The chief guest distributed the prizes. He lauded me personally. I had won two prizes. The Principal thanked the Chief Guest. National Anthem was sung and the function came to a close.

It was an eventful day in my life. I cannot describe the joy I experienced. I feel proud that the Governor singled me out for the personal praise.

Sports Day in My School

Every school celebrates its Sports Day and, to this all, the children very longingly look forward to. My school the St. Andrews Sr. Secondary School also has its Sports Day every year sometime in the month of November. The month of November is earmarked for the occasion, as, at this time, the weather is congenial for a long span of games on the field. When this day is about to come, there appears to be a lot of activity in the entire school premises as, arrangements take time. And so there is a lot of overtime beyond the scheduled hours of routine work.

Weeks before the Sports Day, children start giving their names for different events, and then, after the school hours, practices start. The children, who do not participate in any events, get other duties of the like of making relevant charts, making lists of games and participants etc. It is obvious that something is on for, at least for a fortnight before the event, studies are put as if on the hold, except of course for the STDs X and XII. The rest of the school is seen bustling with enjoyment and merriment for all enjoy such events. All the children, all the teachers and even all the other non-teaching staff seems to busy with some work or the other. This is because everyone yes, everyone is assigned a duty to see that the Day passes off well.

After a fortnight of being over busy with the preparations for the Sports Day, at last the day arrives. The lawns are so very meticulously done up, white chalk powder lines are installed for different events. Victory stands are beautifully done up to make the victors feel proud of being there after the events. All the children are so well groomed in their white uniforms that, it is a sight to watch and admire. To cap it all, the staff members are also very smartly dressed especially those involved with the different events they blend so well with the smart children that, the total effect is just smashing.

The day starts with the usual Assembly and then, all of us are instructed to go to our allotted places on the lawn, class wise. There are volunteers from the senior children who guide the smaller ones to their respective places and soon all is set as per the plan. As soon as all is settled, the Chief Guest arrives, and the Principal goes out to receive him/ her. The Chief Guest is taken to the dais and as soon as he/ she is settled, the Principal says a few words to introduce the guest to all, and requests him to say a few words and declare the Sports open. Now, the guest speaks usually on the importance of Sports and Sports Day, and declares the opening of the function. As soon as these two important speeches are over, the Chief Guest declares the Sports Day open, and there and then the events start.

One by one the events take place in a very well disciplined manner and the winners listed and made to stand on the Victory Stand and cheered by one and all. The games and Sports last for about two hours and then comes the most interesting moment of the function the moment of appreciating the winners by awarding them gifts and prizes, cups and shields. This is the ultimate moment of pleasure for winners when, amidst loud clapping and shouting of cheers, they get their rewards for their good work from the Chief Guest.

Even though I am not a very great enthusiast of games or sports, I just love this day and look forward to it through the year. I also make it a point to attend school on this day every year though I never participate. The thrill, the excitement, and then, the pleasure of winning are all moments worth seeing and enjoying. I love to see my friends and others participating with their hearts and souls with a complete involvement in the games. Their victory boosts up even my morale. Every year, after seeing this event, I decide that, I should also try to take part, but, the enthusiasm soon fades away as, I must admit that, I am not too keen a lover or fan of sports and games. I do love to watch it all but, I never feel the urge to participate.

The day concludes with a prize distribution ceremony, where winners are rewarded with medals and certificates. The smiles on their faces, the joy in their hearts, make the day unforgettable.

Annual Sports Day is not just about sports; it’s about fostering unity, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging among students. It helps to break the monotony of regular academic schedules and infuse a dose of excitement and enthusiasm. It’s a day that all students eagerly await, making it one of the most cherished events of the school calendar.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

I was shocked by the sexism on display at my son’s sports day

Two children taking part in a sack race at a sports day

I was 32 when I attended my first Sports Day. It’s not something that happens in Spain where I grew up.

So, when my son, then 5, came home from school and told me all about it, I was as excited as he was.

But when the day arrived, my excitement turned to confusion.

I realised this wasn’t the event I thought it was.

Instead of all the children playing together and competing with each other, they were being divided into groups of boys and girls. I couldn’t understand why children as young as five were being categorised by their gender .

When I asked others if they found this odd, they seemed indifferent; ‘This is how it’s always been.’

Why, after all the progress made over the last decade, do we continue to reinforce the idea that when it comes to sports, girls and boys are different?

Don’t get me wrong, I think Sports Day has great value. I love seeing the kid’s enthusiasm; their giggles as they walk leg to leg with their classmates, or the look of concentration on their faces as they balance the egg on the spoon.

I love the sense of camaraderie and community these events create for kids and their families.

But as a feminist, I find the way schools categorise children by their gender not only sexist but unnecessary.

My son and his sister still take part in Sports Day , but now we also use the events as a conversation starter. We celebrate other children; marvel at the girl who climbs the monkey bars like a soldier and talk about the hobbies of those kids who just aren’t that into sports.

According to The Women’s Sports Foundation, ‘there is no gender-based physiological reason to separate females and males in sports competition’ before puberty. They’re physically equal.

The only difference is one that we as a society have created. In categorising children like this, we’re creating a bias.

Most of the time, we’re not even aware of the nonverbal messages we’re sending.

If we look at primary-aged children, boys are often gifted footballs , racquets, and team kits, all things that encourage movement, and let them know that sport is something they should be interested in.

Whereas girls are given things that centre on caring for others and the way they look, non-competitive toys like dolls, make-up and kitchens.

Or, let’s look at school uniforms . If the school has them, it’s usually trousers for boys and skirts for girls. This not only makes an obvious visual distinction that they are different, but it also physically limits the activities girls can partake in.

These small, seemingly unassuming gestures send strong messages to our kids and by the time boys arrive at school, they’re monopolising larger spaces on the playground to play ‘their games’ while girls are socialised to play quietly, to talk. Sending a powerful statement about whose interests matter most.

All of these things contribute to limiting beliefs based on gender.

Women in Sport found that girls as young as five don’t feel like they belong in sport wih 57% of parents saying their daughters had felt shut out of   physical activity.

Astoundingly, 26% said this was because their daughter was told it ‘wasn’t for girls.’ Even the Euro-winning Lionesses were discouraged from playing football as kids.

We have to stop letting children believe that their aptitude for sports is different because of their gender. In doing so we are letting a lot of women’s sporting talent fall through the cracks.

We’re not encouraging girls to see themselves as equal to boys and, more disturbingly, we’re not teaching boys to see girls as equal to them.

We’re also neglecting the boys who don’t like sport and seriously failing non-binary kids, or those with non-binary parents. On the playground and in the classroom, it’s vital that every child feels included.

We have to help children challenge the narrative they are given and encourage them to question long-held beliefs and traditions. Even if that means questioning the adults around them.

I often share my thoughts on things like Sports Day with my children and ask what they think. I do this because I want them to be critical thinkers, even (or hopefully!) if that means that I am the one whose outdated views get challenged by them.

So, how should we approach Sports Day this year?

Well, what about age? Divide kids by the month they were born. It’s objective and fair. Surely a kid born in June competing with someone born 11 months before (20% of their life span) feels more unfair, regardless of genitalia.

Or what about asking who prefers pizza over chips? Or the colour yellow instead of purple? Literally any way except by protected categories.

I understand that some people will think this is unnecessary. It’s how we’ve always done it, after all.  But, if we’re serious about tackling gender inequality in sports, education and life then we need to be brave.

We need to look at the data, to look at the impact and to choose to do better now that we know better. Change can feel scary, but   it’s necessary to change these seemingly small things to tackle the bigger inequalities and level the playing field.

Russia Sends Waves of Troops to the Front in a Brutal Style of Fighting

More than 1,000 Russian soldiers in Ukraine were killed or wounded on average each day in May, according to NATO and Western military officials.

By Julian E. Barnes ,  Eric Schmitt and Marc Santora

Julian E. Barnes and Eric Schmitt reported from Washington, and Marc Santora from Kyiv, Ukraine.

May was a particularly deadly month for the Russian army in Ukraine, with an average of more than 1,000 of its soldiers injured or killed each day, according to U.S., British and other Western intelligence agencies.

But despite its losses, Russia is recruiting 25,000 to 30,000 new soldiers a month — roughly as many as are exiting the battlefield, U.S. officials said. That has allowed its army to keep sending wave after wave of troops at Ukrainian defenses, hoping to overwhelm them and break through the trench lines.

It is a style of warfare that Russian soldiers have likened to being put into a meat grinder, with commanding officers seemingly oblivious to the fact that they are sending infantry soldiers to die.

At times, this approach has proved effective, bringing the Russian army victories in Avdiivka and Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine. But Ukrainian and Western officials say the tactics were less successful this spring, as Russia tried to take land near the city of Kharkiv.

American officials said that Russia achieved a critical objective of President Vladimir V. Putin, creating a buffer zone along the border to make it more difficult for the Ukrainians to strike into the country.

But the drive did not threaten Kharkiv and was ultimately stopped by Ukrainian defenses, according to Western officials.
