Program Curriculum

Close-up of people handling mud and straw construction materials

The first two years are intended for the tooling up of candidates to undertake research in an academic setting and their intended areas of research, by taking classes, participating in research projects, selecting their advisory committee members, completing their “game plan” and taking the qualifier exam. This exam is administered by the candidate’s advisory committee and has two parts: written and oral. Candidates take courses tailored to their direction of research and background knowledge, as determined through conversations with their principal advisor. See the curriculum below for a checklist of subjects to be covered. For additional and up-to-date information on these and other course offerings (course descriptions, schedules, instructors, etc.) please visit the University’s Schedule of Classes (SOC) webpage .

The third year of the PhD program is devoted to the development of the PhD dissertation proposal based on the work completed in the first two years. In the fourth year, the proposal is publicly defended and work on the dissertation commences. In the fifth year, the dissertation work is completed and publicly defended. Approvals of these milestones are judged by the candidate’s advisory committee and approved by the Carnegie Mellon Architecture Graduate Committee.

For details and regulations about the Game Plan, Qualification, Proposal and Dissertation processes, as well as additional details and regulations, please see the PhD Student Handbook .

The PhD-AECM curriculum is customized based on the experience and needs of individual students. Please contact Track Chair Joshua Lee with questions about the PhD curriculum.

Current Master's student: Marshall is a fantastic business program. So far, my academic experience has been nothing short of fantastic. I have never enjoyed school before, but almost every class I have learned new, applicable, and incredibly helpful techniques that I apply in my job every day. Most of the professors are very helpful, and passionate about their subjects. Marshall has clubs for almost every industry, so depending on your industry of interest, Marshall has clubs to prepare you for interviews and get you great exposure, and they're a great way to network as well. If your industry is not represented, you have the opportunity to create one. Marshall is still relatively underrepresented in minority categories like women and people of color, but from my understanding, they are working to improve those numbers. ... Read 17 reviews

Master's Student: Grades don't really matter...they do, but they don't. Teachers want to see you succeed and will help out, while still making sure you learn what you need to do. Unlike undergraduate courses where the schedule is basically defined by the accreditation board or whatever, grad classes are different. If you want to spend more time on a topic, the professor can do so. You often take a lot of similar classes as other students in your lab, so working on homework or projects together makes a lot of sense and is natural. There's not a whole lot of competition to get the highest grade in class because as grad students we are all in the same boat. That being said, the course work is still tough and challenging and will push you to the limit. ... Read 2 reviews

PhD Construction Management and Innovation

Research and Knowledge Exchange Support Team (EGIS)

+44 (0)131 451 3130

[email protected]

The overarching aim of our research in this area is to help construction professionals improve both the efficiency of the delivery process and the quality and sustainability of the built environment.

The built environment is fundamental to shaping our cities and regions and plays a pivotal role in achieving a wealthier, fairer, healthier and safer society. The provision of well-designed, functional and energy-efficient buildings is now an essential pre-requisite within today’s society. The construction process is complex, as it requires collaboration of multiple organisations and specialists over the whole life cycle of the built asset. It is influenced by client requirements and expectations, government policies and regulations, the development of new technologies, economic and social trends, as well as the demands of sustainable development. The aim of Construction Management and Innovation research is to come up with new solutions to address these challenges facing the construction sector.

The expertise of our research team spans a wide range of areas, including management, procurement, ICT applications, sustainability, training and skills, construction materials, and building technology. They carry out industry relevant research in the following six themes:

  • Construction Project Management
  • ICT in Construction
  • People and Organisation
  • Procurement
  • Sustainability, Building Resilience & Climate Change
  • Megaproject Management

Research projects

Controlled and Immersive Environment (CIE) to support construction training.

(ConstructionSkills)

Apprenticeships are at the heart of the government skills policy and are regarded as a plausible route for youth employment particularly in the construction industry which is a key contributor to the economy. Training in construction trades such as painting and decorating, roofing, and bricklaying, has not yet benefited from the latest developments in information and communication technologies.

This project thus aims to develop a ‘Controlled Immersive Environment’ (CIE) for supporting construction trade apprenticeship training. The CIE is both a controlled and immersive environment which uses state-of-the-art sensing and information technologies in the context of training for construction trade occupations. Within the CIE, trainees perform actual tasks like they currently do in college laboratories, but the environment enables the objective and comprehensive control of both the delivery and output of the apprentice’s work. Simultaneously, the CIE immerses the apprentice within virtual and varying environments, enabling simulation of work conditions closed to those experienced in real construction sites.

The CIE has the potential to enhance the training experience of construction workers, thereby contributing to better performance in terms of health and safety practice, and productivity. The CIE, which is unique in Europe and beyond, is developed as a pilot project in collaboration with ConstructionSkills.

Offered by: College of Engineering, Civil Engineering Department

Master of Science in Civil Engineering

The practice-oriented Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE) program builds upon an undergraduate education and facilitates more advanced study in one of the branches of civil engineering. Students must select one of five degree options: Construction Engineering & Management, Environmental and Water Resources Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, and Transportation Engineering.

http://www.cpp.edu/~ce/

Yasser Salem, Chair Lisa Wang, Graduate Coordinator

Mission Statement

The Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE) program is intended to serve both full-time and part-time graduate students, focusing on the application of principles and practices to real-world problems encountered by professional civil engineers. The program also facilitates applied research and prepares students for further graduate studies in a Ph.D. program. The program consists of 30 semester units of coursework. All graduate courses are offered in the late afternoon or evening.

The MSCE program consists of five-degree options: Construction Engineering and Management, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Water Resources (EWR), Structural Engineering and Transportation Engineering. Students in each option are allowed to choose one culminating experience from the three: Master’s project, Master’s thesis, or Comprehensive Exam. These options provide students flexibility and also meet a wide variety of emerging needs.

Units to Degree Completion - 30 semester units

Culminating Event/Activity - MS Thesis, MS Project, or Comprehensive Exam

Learning Outcomes

The Civil Engineering Department adopted ABET student-learning outcomes. Upon completing their degree graduates of the MSCE program should be able to develop:

  • an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying advanced principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  • an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze, and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
  • an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
  • an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
  • an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  • an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.

Admission to the Program

The MSCE program is primarily intended for students who already have a BS degree in civil engineering. Successful applicants will be admitted to the programs either unconditionally or with conditions imposed on them. To receive unconditional admission, an applicant must satisfy at least these criteria:

  • The applicant must hold a baccalaureate degree from a civil engineering program accredited by ABET.
  • The applicant must have achieved a grade point average of at least 3.00 in all undergraduate upper division coursework in mathematics, science and engineering and, additionally, in all coursework attempted with graduate standing.
  • Additional requirements may be imposed by individual options of the MSCE program.

Conditional admission may be granted in cases in which the applicant’s academic preparation for graduate study is such that criteria 1) and/or 2) above are not satisfied. In such cases, the applicant is required to submit recent test scores of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), letters of recommendation, and other documents attesting to the applicant’s aptitude for graduate studies. When an applicant is admitted conditionally, the conditions to be met and the time allowed for meeting them are stated in the letter of admission. If these conditions are not satisfied, the student may be disenrolled.

All applicants with a bachelor’s degree from outside of the U.S. (regardless of citizenship) must also provide proof of English language proficiency:

TOEFL: a minimum of 80 (Internet-based exam) IELTS: a minimum of 6.5

In addition, all international applicants are required to submit recent GRE test scores.

Graduate Conditionally Classified

A person may be admitted to a graduate degree or credential program in this category if, in the opinion of appropriate campus authority, he/she can remedy deficiencies by additional coursework but otherwise satisfies all other university requirements for admission. All prerequisites must be specified by the admitting department at the time of student admission. Academic departments are responsible for tracking conditionally admitted students and must report their academic progress to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships and the Graduate Studies Office via a memo on a term basis. Students admitted conditionally will not be allowed to concurrently register for graduate courses that are required for the completion of their projected graduate or professional program. To comply with both existing federal regulations and CSU system policy, conditionally admitted students’ financial aid is limited to private loans. Once all deficiencies are resolved and unconditional status is granted by Cal Poly Pomona, students may be eligible for federal and state aid. Conditional admission does not guarantee unconditional admission to a program.

A minimum of 30 semester units is required for the Master of Science in Civil Engineering degree. All students must select one of the five degree options. The specific requirements for each degree option are described below.

Both employers and professionals around the world are waking up to the realization that you do not ... [+] need a four-year degree to get ahead in your career or learn new skills

Between 2020 and 2021 (the year immediately after the start of the pandemic), post-secondary institutions conferred over one million associate degrees, according to data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

Associate degrees are popular, and may increase in popularity as more employers favor skills-based hiring, and aspiring professionals lean towards opting out of expensive four-year degrees. Both employers and professionals around the world are recognizing that there is more to acquiring new skills and being "job-ready" than undertaking the traditional college route.

Providers offering certificate programs, short courses, and associate degrees are already realizing an uptick in enrolments, with the online course market alone being worth $185.20bn, with an annual growth rate of 8.6% since 2023.

While prestige and high-paying jobs are typically associated with bachelor's degree holders and post-graduates, the reality is that there are many high-paying jobs and fulfilling careers that you can get with an associate degree alone.
