Ph.D in Government

Please explore further each of our fields of expertise:

  • American Government
  • Comparative Government
  • International Relations
  • Political Theory

Course scheduling and course information is available on the Schedule of Classes . Graduate Students should select a Term. Then “Government” as the Subject and choose “Advanced Search” and select “MN or MC Graduate” for Level.

The mission of the Government Department Ph.D. program is to provide students with the analytical skills and substantive knowledge needed to both generate and evaluate research in political science, preparing them for careers at the highest levels of scholarship and teaching. A Georgetown Ph.D. in Government signifies theoretical, methodological, and substantive expertise in various topics of political significance, as well as the research and communication skills necessary for productive scholarship.

The degree indicates that the recipient has acquired extensive knowledge in at least two fields, both typically drawn from the four major subfields of political science, but which may also include related fields such as history, security studies, or public policy. A Georgetown Ph.D. in Government is granted only to students who have demonstrated the ability to synthesize large quantities of information and rigorously evaluate the merits of competing theoretical and empirical arguments. The degree indicates that its holder has obtained the analytical and methodological skills to design and conduct original research of the highest quality. It further certifies that its holder has the written and oral communication skills necessary to engage with debates at the leading edge of the field. Individuals holding a Georgetown Ph.D. in Government are also equipped with the knowledge and skills to teach political science at the university level in both survey courses and specialized seminars.

Doctoral-level seminars taken during coursework are designed to familiarize students with the scholarly literature in at least two fields of study. Students gain a broad understanding of the development and major topics of research within these fields, as well as expertise in several more specialized areas. Students learn to evaluate and engage with the major scholarly debates in their fields of study, both in classroom discussion and in written work. All students learn the methodological skills needed to carry out original research in their respective fields.

Ph.D. students are required to take comprehensive examinations in one major. The purpose of comprehensive examinations is to demonstrate a student’s broad familiarity with the literature in his or her fields of study. This prepares students both as professional members of a scholarly community and as future teachers at the university level. Our doctoral students write dissertations that consist of rigorous original research that contribute to our understanding of a topic of empirical importance and theoretical significance to the field of political science. Once a dissertation of high quality is complete, there is a dissertation defense at which the student presents the results of his or her research and is questioned about the implications of the work for the field of political science by the dissertation committee.

In addition to the formal requirements of the doctoral program, students are encouraged and expected to participate in opportunities for professional socialization and development. All four subfields of the department organize speaker series to host scholars from other universities and promote intellectual exchange. Doctoral students are also encouraged to attend our seminars on various aspects of the academic profession, including teaching, publishing, and the job market.

Students acquire teaching skills in a number of settings. Many serve as teaching assistants for the larger undergraduate courses offered by the department, while others may have the opportunity to teach their own undergraduate-level seminars. Students may also take advantage of training seminars offered by the department, as well as the certification offered through the  Apprenticeship in Teaching Program  run by the  Center for New Designs in Teaching and Learning .

Doctoral students engage with the political science community outside of Georgetown by attending specialized seminars and presenting their research at academic conferences.

For students admitted with a Fellowship, we provide tuition and a stipend of $38,000. Typically students in their first year are assigned a service-free fellowship and will work on coursework and related research. In their second year, students normally are assigned service assistantships and and will typically serve as TA’s in GOVT courses or on other assignments. Students in their fourth year are assigned service assistantships and typically serve as an RA for a professor or some other assignment. In the fifth year, students usually also are service-free conditional on having successfully defended their dissertation prospectus and advanced to ABD status.

Our Ph.D. graduates have tenure-track jobs at many excellent institutions, including:

  • American University
  • Cornell University
  • University of Wisconsin at Madison
  • LBJ School of Public Policy at the University of Texas at Austin
  • George Washington University
  • George Mason University
  • University of California at Riverside
  • University of Michigan
  • Villanova University
  • Carleton University

In addition, our Ph.D.s have been winning prestigious fellowships, including ones from Harvard, Princeton and Brookings.

Part of our placement success is due to our strong record of working closely with students, including producing jointly authored articles.

I haven’t previously taken calculus. Can I still apply?

Yes. If you haven’t previously taken a college-level course in calculus, you can detail your plan to do so if admitted into the program in this section of the application. However, having previously taken a course in calculus can help to make your application more competitive.

Are there minimum GRE scores?

The GRE is not required and there is no minimum GRE score. Applicants to the Evans School must submit either official GRE scores or a Quantitative/Analytic Resume. We review applications holistically, taking into account your prior coursework and grades, your letters of recommendation, your research experience and writing sample, your personal statement, and your test scores or quantitative/analytic resume. We recommend that applicants submit official GRE scores if they have not had prior coursework in economics, statistics, quantitative methods, or other quantitative subjects.

Can I see job placements of previous Ph.D. graduates?

You can see the profiles of our Ph.D. graduates , with their current positions listed.

I have a bachelor’s or master’s degree from a U.S. institution. Do I need to submit TOEFL scores?

If you will have a bachelor’s or master’s degree from a U.S. institution by the time you would start in the program, you do not need to submit TOEFL scores as part of your application.

If you have a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an institution in Australia, the Bahamas, Canada, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, or the United Kingdom and where English is the medium of instruction, you do not need to submit a TOEFL score. Please see Graduate School English Language Proficiency Requirements for the full list of options for demonstrating English proficiency.

I have an MPA/MPP. Can I waive out of courses/credits in your Ph.D. program?

Our Ph.D. program is an academic degree program designed to prepare graduates for careers as tenure-track academics or senior researchers at think tanks or NGO’s. The curriculum of the program focuses on research skill development and professional development within the academic field. For that reason, the curriculum of our Ph.D. program differs in its focus from MPA/MPP programs, and an MPA/MPP is not equivalent to the first two years of doctoral coursework. Students in our doctoral program earn a Master of Science in public policy and management degree upon completion of their first two years of coursework and their Major Area Paper (the literature review of the dissertation proposal).

PhD in Governance

Our PhD programme is for anyone committed to advancing the state of knowledge in their particular domain. Our successful PhD graduates are passionate scholars who understand and work with substantial data, evaluate theory and generate original arguments regarding a significant public management/policy, development or governance issue.

Programme Information

  • Entry Requirements
  • University Application Process
  • University Fees and funding

Students reading for the PhD are seeking to advance the state of knowledge in their particular domain by gathering substantial data, evaluating theory and generating original arguments regarding a significant public management/policy, development or governance issue. A doctoral thesis is a substantial project. The doctorate typically provides training for an academic career. It requires a candidate to develop a sophisticated conceptual framework, undertake independent research at the most advanced academic levels, read and interpret published debates in the field (and other related fields) and produce a thesis that contributes to knowledge in a particular field.

In the preparation stage for the short proposal the school offers assistance in the form of a course (currently called Social Theory) which is presented as part of the PhD first year. The key challenge here is for PhD candidates to demonstrate their potential writing without a supervisor.  Once they have successfully defended their short proposal, students formally register as a PhD candidate and begin work with a supervisor on their long proposal.

The minimum criteria for consideration for acceptance are:

  • A four year Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent);
  • A Master’s degree with a minimum of a 65% average. This could be a Master’s degree from Wits School of Governance or a Master’s degree in a cognate (similar) discipline. Doctoral research is usually carried out in the area of specialisation from the Master’s degree or components of it. Particular attention is paid to the marks awarded for the research component of the Master’s degree;
  • An acceptable initial research proposal with a clear and reasonably well-defined area of interest, evidence of familiarity with your proposed area of study and a specific focus, problem and question you wish to pursue;
  • Availability of an appropriate supervisor. Even if you meet the minimum criteria for consideration in terms of your previous marks and an admissions proposal of PhD quality we may still not be able to offer you a place as our supervisory capacity is limited in terms of numbers and the areas of expertise in which we are able to supervise at a PhD level.

When lodging a formal application for the PhD you will be required the following documentation:

  • A brief letter of motivation indicating why you would like to study for your PhD at the Wits School of Governance;
  • A curriculum vitae, detailing your degrees, your employment experience and any publications;
  • A 2500 word outline of your proposed research;
  • Official transcripts of your qualifications showing degree, courses and results (if you are still studying for a qualifying degree please provide your interim mid-year results);
  • Your graduation certificates (certified copies and then originals);
  • Verification and comparison of any foreign qualifications from the South Africa Qualifications Authority (SAQA);
  • IELTS Language Proficiency scores (if your previous qualification was not through the medium of English).

Applications are handled centrally by the Student Enrolment Centre (SEnC) . Once your application is complete in terms of requested documentation, your application will be referred to the relevant School for assessment. Click here to see an overview of the Wits applications process.

Please apply online . Upload your supporting documents at the time of application, or via the Self Service Portal .

Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications via the Self Service Portal .

Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.

Please note that the Entry Requirements are a guide. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee a place. Final selection is made subject to the availability of places, academic results and other entry requirements where applicable.

Thank you for considering the Ph.D. program at the University of Maryland! Our focus is on training Ph.D. students to conduct research that creates new knowledge in political science on the path toward a successful career as a professional political scientist, as faculty members at an academic institution and in policy and private industry. We offer rigorous training in the major subfields of political science and the methodological tools necessary to conduct cutting-edge research. We facilitate faculty and student interaction by pairing each incoming student with a faculty mentor from their area of study and by maintaining small class sizes. The Department has a culture that supports faculty and student collaboration that leads to publications in the top political science journals. In the last few years alone, articles that faculty and students have co-authored appeared in the following journals:  American Political Science Review ;  American Journal of Political Science ; The  Journal of Politics ;  International Studies Quarterly ;  Journal of Conflict Resolution ;  Legislative Studies Quarterly ;  Political Behavior ; and  Public Opinion Quarterly .

In addition to access to the renowned scholars, workshops, dissertation research grants, and speaker series in the Department of Government and Politics, our Ph.D. students have access to outstanding programs throughout our world-class university, and the wider research community that includes top-notch universities in northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. We have strong relationships with faculty at the other area programs and students have the opportunity to establish their own connections with these faculty and their Ph.D. students. Being in the DC area also affords our students access to governmental agencies, and major domestic and international organizations, allowing our students to collect unique and invaluable data.   It is an especially exciting time to be part of our program. Our recent efforts to strengthen existing areas of research and expand into new areas have been extremely successful. We hired a number of outstanding faculty members all of whom produce cutting edge research and share our dedication to training the next generation of scholars.

We are highly selective but offer the top applicants a variety of multi-year funding packages (assistantships, fellowships, and internships). For more information about the application process, requirements, funding, and our regularly held online Q&A sessions, please see our admissions page .

College of Arts and Science

Truman School of Government and Public Affairs

Phd in political science, program overview .

Our program is organized into the traditional major subfields of political science (including American politics, public policy/administration, international relations and comparative politics).  Beyond that, we focus on a number of research cores on the cutting edge of political science research including race and ethnic politics, voting behavior, political movements, civil wars, American political institutions, and conflict management.  We offer comprehensive methodological training in quantitative techniques, formal modeling and game theory, and qualitative techniques (such as interviews and archival research).  Students are trained in state-of-the-art methodologies such as experiments, spatial econometrics, and techniques to collect and analyze big data (including automated data collection and text analysis).   We are looking for promising students to help us answer important research questions with the most advanced techniques.

At Mizzou, we provide opportunities for collaborative research projects with faculty members who are experts in their area.  Our vibrant program  features professors who publish their research in top academic journals and university presses, edit leading journals in the discipline, and teach classes on advanced techniques at international methods institutes.  The result is that our PhD students consistently publish in top academic journals while in graduate school.  Nationally, it is somewhat rare to see students graduate with multiple publications, both solo and co-authored with faculty members; at Mizzou, it is the norm.

Coursework in our program consists of small seminars, allowing for intensive study of political science concepts and research, close interaction with faculty, and individual attention to student progress. Advised by graduate faculty, students at MU are encouraged to become active scholars capable of conducting independent analysis and research of political and social phenomena.

Mizzou Political Science maintains a low graduate student to faculty ratio, a commitment to student success, and a high rate of retention and graduation.

The COVID pandemic has been extremely hard on students, especially for students from the developing world, rural backgrounds, or from groups that are underrepresented in academia.  The significant disruptions caused by lockdowns, health issues, and local ordinances mean that it may be difficult to prepare for the GRE exam, or even travel to the testing facility.  In the interests of fairness, we have removed this requirement for applicants for the Fall 2024 admissions cycle.  We hope that this small step makes it easier for a diverse group of students to reach their goals at Mizzou.

We don’t have minimum scores for the GRE.  As for the GRE averages, the above figure shows admitted students from a previous application cycle (circled) across quantitative and verbal percentiles (50th, 75th and 95th percentiles).  As you can see, higher GRE scores improve your chances of being admitted.  At the same time, it is not a perfect relationship.  Unlike other top schools, we prefer to take a comprehensive or holistic approach to evaluating applicants.

Keep in mind that we have waived the GRE requirement for applicants for Fall 2023, so it your choice as to whether to provide GRE scores or not.

The Truman School strives to be a diverse and inclusive environment where students are encouraged to pursue their research interests in vibrant intellectual community.  As such, we take a holistic approach to  admissions .  This means that we look for students with unique backgrounds, exceptional academic performance, research interests that overlap those of our faculty, strong letters of recommendation, and experience conducting political science research.  Exceptional performance in one area could certainly compensate for less experience in another.

More specifically, the best personal statements are those that a) describe your post-PhD employment goals, b) lay out your skills and tools—such as experience with data analysis, statistical software, language skills, and conducting independent research—that will help you succeed in graduate school, and c) show why Mizzou’s graduate program appeals to you—this includes noting how your research interests overlap with those of our faculty.

No, there is no need to secure a professor’s approval before noting in the personal statement that you would like to work with them.  If you would like to chat with a particular professor, contact the Director of Graduate Studies, Laron Williams, and he would be happy to establish the connection and get the conversation going.

While having an MA helps demonstrate that you are familiar with the intellectual demands of graduate school, it is not a requirement for admission.  In fact, the majority of our PhD students choose to begin the program immediately after graduating from their undergraduate institution.  In short, we welcome applicants from all backgrounds: applying straight from undergrad, after pursuing an MA, and mid-career applicants.

All Ph.D. students have graduate assistantships and receive a tuition waiver and a health insurance subsidy.  Remaining expenses include course fees which—depending on the number of credit hours—typically do not exceed $1,000 a semester.

Our graduate student stipends are highly competitive (over $18,000) and quite generous when one factors in the low cost-of-living of Columbia ( example ).  Historically, our students have won multiple university fellowships that provide additional funding (often $11,000-16,000).

The Truman School is also unique in guaranteeing funding for the five years it takes students to complete their PhD requirements, rather than make acquiring funding a competition between students.  We have found that our approach reduces student anxiety about their economic situation.  When students don’t compete with each other for their funding, they are free to build lasting friendships and connections.

Graduate assistants typically work 20 hours a week as either a teaching assistant or a research assistant.  Graduate students in RA positions are paired with faculty members with similar research interests, so promising research assistantships often evolve into full-fledged co-authored projects.  Teaching assistant duties vary according to the class, sometimes involving mostly grading while other times involving leading discussion sections. We also have opportunities for students interested in applied policy research to work as an RA with the  Institute of Public Policy .

Students are allocated to either TA or RA positions based on a mixture of departmental need and the strengths and preferences of students.

Most of our PhD alumni work in academia as professors, so a critical part of the graduate training at Mizzou revolves around teaching.  The ideal sequence is for students to serve as teaching assistants in substantive courses for a few semesters and then become lab instructors.  As a lab instructor, TAs build teaching experience by providing one-on-one and small group instruction to a lab.  We also encourage students to pursue guest lecturing opportunities so that they can strengthen their teaching skills.  Moreover, our students have taken advantage of the additional training offered by the  Teaching for Learning Center  and the  Minor in College Teaching .

Advanced graduate students are allowed to take the reins and teach their own independent courses.  The goal is for our graduates to have a diverse teaching portfolio of classes so that they can hit the ground running in their first post-graduation academic job.

Yes!  The professors in the Truman School believe that a critical part of training graduate students is collaborating with them on  research projects .  So much of the research process can only be learned by getting your hands dirty, brainstorming with coauthors, and writing on interests that you share with faculty.  Graduate education is certainly less rewarding if you don’t have these experiences.

These collaborative opportunities arise organically, and often come out of a research assistantship position or as the result of a research paper for a graduate course.  The result is that the vast majority of students go on the academic job market with multiple publications—often with faculty and other graduate students as coauthors—which places them in a stronger competitive position than their peers.  Nationally, it is somewhat rare for graduate students to have multiple publications; at Mizzou, it’s the norm.

We expect our students to produce high-quality, innovative political science research, so we provide the funds that help them along the way.  We group these funds into three categories:

  • All students receive  funding  to attend and present at academic conferences.  Academic conferences are a great way to network with others who share your passions, stay current on cutting-edge research, and receive feedback on your own research projects.  We encourage students to begin attending smaller or regional conferences early on so that they are comfortable with presenting research at national conferences later on in the program.
  • For some students, their research and teaching interests require additional training.  This could include immersive language training in other countries or classes on advanced methodological topics.  For example, in the past few years, we have funded students to receive additional training on Political Psychology, qualitative methods, and a variety of quantitative methods at American and international summer schools.
  • During the research process, students often discover that their project requires data that has never been collected before.  Whether the data comes from fieldwork in other countries, through experiments, or surveys, we are happy to provide small grants to get the ball rolling.

Students choose to spend their summers in a variety of ways, whether it is taking a course or two, doing fieldwork or original data collection, gaining language training in an immersive environment, or attending summer schools in methodologies.  These decisions are made by the student in consultation with their advisor and committee.

Departmental assistantships are based on 10-month appointments (you can spread payments over 12 months), but there are limited opportunities for 1- to 2-month summer research assistantships.  Any student with a departmental assistantship receives a tuition waiver for summer classes.

Full-time PhD students take three classes a week and each class meets for 2.5 hours once a week.  We make sure that these graduate courses don’t conflict with the undergraduate courses related to your teaching assistantship.

Students select a primary and a secondary field out of American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations and Public Policy/Public Administration.  Students must take four classes from their primary field, three from their secondary field, and four methods classes.  Besides that, we encourage students to take classes outside of their two fields and outside of the Truman School.  For more information on these courses—as well as available syllabi— click here .

Here is a rough outline of the 2.5 years of coursework.

Fall   Dissertation Research and Job Market

Core Courses:  each field has a broad seminar that introduces the fundamental topics and big questions in that field: Public Policy, Introduction to International Relations, and Introduction to Comparative Politics.  American Politics offers two core courses: American Political Behavior and American Political Institutions.

Methods Courses:  each PhD student must take at least 13 hours of advanced methods courses.  The two core courses include Introductory Statistics for Political Science (and its 1-hour lab) in the Fall of Year 1, and Linear Models in Politics in the Spring of Year 2.  After that, students can take two other 3-hour courses on topics including Maximum Likelihood Estimation, Time Series Analysis, Formal Models, and Qualitative Research Methods.  Students are also encouraged to pursue methods training from other departments at Mizzou and at summer methods schools.

Substantive Courses:  each field offers at least one substantive course per semester on an important topic in that field.  Click on this  link  to see the substantive courses we’ve offered in the last few years.

Elective:  students are free to take classes outside of the Truman School at Mizzou.  Oftentimes students will want to gain expertise or learn some methodological skill that is found outside of political science.  In the past, students have taken courses in Black Studies, Statistics, Economics, Philosophy, Communications, and Sociology, to name a few.

Comprehensive Examinations:  in the Spring of Year 3, students take comprehensive examinations in both their primary and secondary fields.  The examinations take place over two days (one for each field) and assess whether students understand the foundational research on big questions in their field.  After passing comprehensive examinations, students start writing their dissertation proposal.

The Graduate Association of Political Scientists ( GAPS ) is the student organization for graduate students involved in political science degree programs.  It hosts monthly meetings with informational sessions, seminars on health and wellness, professional development activities, and social activities.

GAPS also runs the Truman School’s mentoring program, which connects all first-year students with an advanced student in the program with similar research interests.  The mentors provide advice and guidance about how to navigate the PhD program.  We have found that this eases the transition to full-time graduate student and improves student retention.

Since we recruit students from diverse backgrounds, there is considerable variance in students’ previous academic experiences.  To help the transition from undergraduate education (or full-time employment) to a PhD program, we provide a comprehensive professional development program.  The goal is to train students on all the tools and skills they’ll need to make the most out of the PhD program.  The professional development program is made up of three main components:

  • Boot camp :  This 3-hour graduate class (POLS 9010: Research Design and Analysis) is offered immediately prior to the start of the fall semester and is required for all first-year PhD students.  The primary objective of the course is to make sure that all students have the necessary skills to succeed in the first year of the program, regardless of their prior training or academic experiences.  The class provides a strong foundation in mathematics, statistics and probability theory so that students have the knowledge required for the methods sequence.  Other topics covered include professionalization, writing for a political science audience, the typesetting program LaTeX, and an introduction to Stata.
  • Methods workshops : 3-4 times a semester the Truman School offers a 2- or 3-hour methods workshop for graduate students.  The workshops focus on a topic that is not covered in our graduate methods sequence, but is useful for students wanting to produce high-quality research.  While these classes are typically taught by Mizzou faculty, we are happy to give advanced graduate students the opportunity to teach their peers in their area of expertise.  Over the last four years there have been almost 30 different workshops, ranging from Race and Ethnicity to Python, to Text Analysis and Network Analysis.
  • Mini-conferences : Presenting at academic conferences is a critical part of success in graduate school.  Of course, some people might be stressed at the thought of finishing their paper, producing their presentation, and presenting it in front of strangers.  We get it, as we were students at one point too.  To help our students become more comfortable with academic conferences, we host a number of mini-conferences through the year.  These mini-conferences typically take place about a month before a major political science conference and they give students the opportunity to practice presenting and receive feedback before they attend the conference.  We have found that presenting the project in a low-stress environment not only improves the overall research quality, but also puts students in the best chance to succeed.

Degree Options

Doctoral students identify a primary and a secondary field among four areas of study offered in the Political Science:

  • American Politics
  • Comparative Politics
  • International Relations
  • Public Policy and Administration

The PhD program of study consists of 45 hours of graduate course work, including:

  • 12 hours in a primary field of study
  • 9 hours in a secondary field of study
  • 13 hours in methodology

Up to 24 hours of courses from a student's master's program may be counted toward the doctoral degree, at the discretion of the student's doctoral committee. The doctoral degree requires a minimum of 72 hours of course credit including reading and research hours.

Students typically take comprehensive exams in the spring of the third year. After passing the comprehensive examination, students work on independent research and a dissertation under the advisement of a doctoral committee.

PhD Placement

Our assistance to students doesn’t end when the student gets their PhD.  Each student pursuing a job on the academic job market goes through the placement program, where we review job market materials, discuss strategy, and offer interview prep.  We also offer seminars on how to succeed in non-academic careers, and have placed recent graduates in all levels of government, think tanks, and the private sector.

The Truman School is extremely proud of its recent placement efforts (see below). In addition to placing students in tenure-track professor positions in research-dominated universities, we have an excellent track record in students gaining employment at small state universities and liberal arts colleges.  Professors in the latter type of universities can engage in their teaching passions while still having the opportunity to conduct research.

A man wearing a suit stand by a laptop with a stick that says UCF

UCF is a leading metropolitan research university known for helping students unleash their potential and advancing innovation in our community and state. Led by world-class faculty members with unrivaled industry experience, UCF’s graduate programs continue to earn top national recognitions for accomplishing those goals and more.

More than 9,000 UCF students enroll in UCF’s graduate programs to advance their careers or launch new ones. And many are thriving on campus and after graduation in programs ranked among the best in the nation.

U.S. News & World Report has recognized UCF’s exceptional faculty and graduate programs in its 2024 list of Best Graduate Schools. UCF’s emergency management program ranks No. 1 in the nation, and four programs rank in the top 25. Nine graduate programs placed in the top 50 nationally, including five in public affairs, three in education and one in health. U.S. News will release rankings for the engineering and medicine categories at a later date.

“UCF’s world-class faculty excel at providing our graduate students with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive as innovative leaders and creators,” says President Alexander N. Cartwright. “The U.S. News rankings demonstrate that our students graduate well-prepared to unleash their potential in individual, business, and government sectors that are growing in Florida and vital to our economy, health, and quality of life.”

UCF Grads Shape Emergency Responses Nationwide

UCF has a proven track record in emergency management. The university’s Master of Emergency and Crisis Management program — which is offered the College of Community Innovation and Education — has climbed the rankings over seven consecutive years. The homeland security program and its faculty researchers enable students to navigate increasingly complex manmade and natural disasters, while learning from past disasters to improve their preparedness and response in the future.

Graduates of the program go on to become leaders in directing and implementing emergency responses in Florida and throughout the country, including in Boston and Washington, D.C. They are saving lives, helping communities prepare as well as possible to navigate disasters, and putting into practice the lessons they learned from outstanding faculty who contribute to  national research and regional solutions related to crises .

“Our students are equipped to assist communities and organizations in every phase of emergency management — from preparedness and mitigation to response and recovery,” says  Claire Connolly Knox, professor in UCF’s School of Public Administration.

“We are thrilled to be ranked No. 1 and nationally recognized again as a leader in emergency and crisis management,” she adds. “This honor highlights the innovative and community-focused research by our faculty and continuous engagement with community partners invested in our outstanding students and alumni.”

Other highlights include:

  • 12 in Education — Student Counseling and Personnel Services
  • 15 in Public Affairs — Nonprofit Management, up three spots since last year
  • 21 in Public Affairs — Public Management and Leadership, up five spots since last year
  • 27 in Public Affairs — Public Finance and Budgeting
  • 32 in Education — Curriculum and Instruction
  • 41 in Health — Physical Therapy
  • 42 in Best Education Schools, up four spots since last year
  • 47 in Public Affairs
  • 59 in Nursing — Doctor of Nursing Practice

UCF’s many strong rankings are a testament to the excellence of UCF’s faculty, who bring to the classroom extensive experience in academia, industry and research, as well as to the university’s commitment to help students unleash their potential in a culture focused on collaboration and finding solutions that benefit our society.

UCF students who have graduated from the nonprofit management program have gone on to make a big impact by helping communities in Florida and beyond. In one example, more than 12 years ago, program graduate Eric Camarillo ’16 ’19MNM launched faith-based nonprofit organization SALT Outreach Inc. in Central Florida to help provide services to the homeless, including mobile shower trailers, laundry, clothing, haircuts, mail services and help with employment. SALT has grown to more than 30 staff members who help hundreds of people every day.

“Throughout the School of Public Administration, our faculty, staff and advisory boards have worked hard to ensure we are offering students in Central Florida, across the country and around the globe a world-class, innovative education,” says Doug Goodman, professor and school director. “We are honored to be recognized as leaders in emergency management, nonprofit management, public leadership management and public finance and budgeting, fields that are critical to the health and well-being of our citizens and the success of our communities.”

The Best Graduate Education Schools category includes graduate-level educator preparation and advancement programs, such as teacher education, school counseling and psychology, educational leadership, and curriculum and instruction, all offered through the College of Community Innovation and Education. The college offers graduate students numerous opportunities to collaborate closely with expert faculty, from receiving mentorship and support in research and scholarship to engaging in robust internships and field experiences with school district, nonprofit and agency partners. Some faculty members also lead federally funded projects that offer tuition assistance and prepare students to work with students in high-need schools.

UCF’s continued rise has also drawn praise from other outlets:

  • In February, U.S. News & World Report released its best online program national rankings, which placed UCF tied at No. 7 in the nation for best online bachelor’s programs. Of the 14 UCF national rankings from U.S. News , six online programs made the top 10, two made the top 15 and three were in the top 50. UCF has ranked in the top 20 overall Best Online Programs for the past seven years.
  • In March, The Princeton Review and PC Gamer recognized UCF’s game design programs among the best in the world. The graduate Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy is ranked No. 1 in the world for the fourth time in five years. The undergraduate game design program, Games and Interactive Media (GaIM) in UCF’s Nicholson School of Communication and Media, achieved its highest ranking ever, advancing to No. 5 in the world.
  • Sports Business Journal named Orlando the No. 1 Best Sports Business City for event hosting, including the NBA, Orlando City and Orlando Pride Soccer, the nation’s premier tennis center, college football bowl games, the NFL Pro Bowl, U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, the Arnold Palmer Invitational — and, of course, the UCF Knights. With its inaugural season in the Big 12 Conference in 2023, UCF has skyrocketed to unprecedented success as the youngest Power Four program in the country. With one of the country’s  top graduate sports business programs , UCF has also provided a pipeline of talented graduates to some of the nation’s biggest sports brands.

Vanderbilt University chancellor: Why we want to build a graduate campus in West Palm Beach

The vanderbilt campus would be built on 7 acres of government-owned land formerly slated for a university of florida graduate campus..

phd in management from government university

Vanderbilt University wants to open a campus in downtown West Palm Beach that would feature a business school as large as its existing one in Nashville, plus a college for computer science and artificial intelligence, Vanderbilt Chancellor Daniel Diermeier told The Palm Beach Post.

"We have been thinking for a while about a potential second campus, and it became clear that South Florida, and West Palm Beach and Palm Beach, would be a great location," Diermeier said in an exclusive interview Wednesday.

The campus would be built on seven acres of government-owned land formerly slated for a University of Florida graduate campus.

Diermeier's comments followed his April 1 visit to Palm Beach County , where he met with several government officials to drum up support for the Vanderbilt campus in West Palm Beach.

During the evening of April 1, Diermeier attended a fundraiser at the Palm Beach home of billionaire Stephen Ross. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also attended the gathering, according to the governor's public schedule.

The Palm Beach event raised $100 million out of the $300 million sought by the university for the expanded campus, the sources said. Diermeier would not comment on the fundraising details.

But Diermeier was eager to talk about why Vanderbilt wants a campus in two of the nation's fastest-growing cities, Nashville and West Palm Beach.

University campus expected to capitalize on Wall Street South

A West Palm Beach campus would capitalize on Palm Beach County's growing reputation as Wall Street South and provide students jobs in finance companies. A Vanderbilt campus also would "turbocharge" the creation of new businesses established by students, creating an innovation industry, Diermeier said.

Diermeier lauded the sophistication of Palm Beach's residents, whose business and financial acumen, as well as their deep pockets, could invest in and guide companies created by graduates of the business and computer schools. Having a university of Vanderbilt's caliber is needed "to unlock the full potential of West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County," Diermeier said.

The Vanderbilt West Palm Beach campus would provide graduate degrees geared to the finance, data and technology industries and enroll roughly 1,000 students, he said.

The Vanderbilt campus is being pitched for two acres owned by the City of West Palm Beach and five adjacent acres owned by Palm Beach County. The properties are along South Tamarind Avenue, from Datura Street south to Fern Street, in a section of the city dubbed Government Hill.

The land is the same property that both the county and the city had planned to donate for free to UF for a graduate campus in business and artificial intelligence.

But the deal fell apart last year after efforts to secure an adjacent five acres from Palm Beach billionaire Jeff Greene failed. The Vanderbilt campus would not need the Greene land.

Diermeier said he was aware of the former UF campus plan, and he was approached by someone about the downtown land during a Vanderbilt football game.

Vanderbilt's top ranking and its strong alumni network

While not an Ivy League school, Vanderbilt is known as a “Southern Ivy” because of its selective admissions process and strong academic reputation.

Vanderbilt is ranked No. 18 among national universities, and its business school, the Owen School of Management, is No. 27 in the nation in a three-way tie with the University of Texas-Dallas and the University of Rochester, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Current enrollment at Vanderbilt's business school is 617 students, a university spokesman said. The business school has 97 faculty members, and the annual cost of attendance is about $103,000.

Vanderbilt boasts a $10 billion endowment and counts many wealthy alumni and business leaders among its supporters.

These supporters include Vanderbilt trustee Jon Winklereid, a Hobe Sound resident and chief executive of TPG Holdings/TPG Capital LP, an asset management firm with a market value of $16 billion.

There's also Cody Crowell, a Vanderbilt University graduate, a managing partner at Frisbie Group in Palm Beach and a key figure in the Vanderbilt deal. During a recent talk before a Palm Beach chamber meeting, Crowell was credited with coming up with the idea of bringing Vanderbilt to West Palm Beach.

Vanderbilt has more than 1,100 alumni in Palm Beach County and in the northern part of neighboring Broward County, according to the university.

The West Palm Beach campus plan, in the works for about a year, is being advanced by Ross'  Related Cos. , a global real estate developer, and the  Frisbie Group . Both companies are building offices, condominiums and apartments in  West Palm Beach.

In a March interview, Related Urban Chief Executive Ken Himmel said having a Vanderbilt University business school campus in West Palm Beach would transform the city into a major destination.

"Every single city we've worked in has been anchored by a great university," Himmel said.

How would Vanderbilt get control of the taxpayer-owned land?

Diermeier said Vanderbilt would only build a sizable West Palm Beach campus if it received support from the business community — and government officials. He said that Vanderbilt officials have not discussed receiving state money for the venture, "although we would welcome that."

Diermeier said he met with some but not all county commissioners on April 1. He said there was interest in the campus plan, which he said is still in the early stages. He added there were discussions about the government-owned land and how the university could "have access to it."

Diermeier said Vanderbilt did not ask for anything at this point. But he was vague when asked if Vanderbilt would be willing to pay for the seven acres of taxpayer-owned land.

Vanderbilt would only open a West Palm Beach campus "if the community wants us," Diermeier said. "One way to demonstrate that is by co-investing. We 100% need that … This is a marriage that has to work for us."

People familiar with the Vanderbilt campus plan say its backers want the city and county to donate the land for free. Private money raised for the venture would go toward the university's endowment, which generates income that finances the university's programs.

But not every business leader is on board with handing over taxpayer land, especially to a university with a $10 billion endowment.

More: Is University of Florida's grad school campus in West Palm Beach in peril?

Some business officials, who asked not to be named, said any effort to attract an out-of-state private university using public land should be done via a public request for proposals, not a behind-the-scenes deal with one institution.

Two county commission members said the meeting with Diermeier was introductory and didn't get into specifics.

"I’m very proud that a prestigious university like Vanderbilt is considering building a graduate school in Palm Beach County. This was really a just-get-to-know-me meeting," said Palm Beach County Mayor Maria Sachs.

"This was all very preliminary," Commissioner Gregg Weiss said. "It's getting to know what Vanderbilt is about. There is a real workforce need for the business school graduates that would be attending this school. The details still need to be worked out, but it is a step in the right direction."

Palm Beach County's uneven record on public land donations

Ambitious ventures involving free taxpayer land have a mixed record in Palm Beach County.

To lure California-based Scripps Research Institute to Jupiter in 2006, $580 million in state and county money went to Scripps to create its Florida campus.

In addition, 70 acres in public and private land was leased to Scripps after Scripps officials promised that a "biotech village" of companies and jobs would be built on the vacant Palm Beach Gardens property. The land is next to the Alton community on Donald Ross Road.

The land was to be conveyed to Scripps after a 15-year contract between the county and Scripps was up. While the county staff said Scripps met the contract requirement to create 545 jobs and operate in the county for 15 years to be eligible for the land transfer, the biotech village never materialized .

Nevertheless, in 2022 the 70-acre parcel was transferred to Scripps for $1, as per the agreement with the county. UF Health now controls the land as part of its acquisition of Scripps Florida.

Meanwhile, the UF graduate school in downtown West Palm Beach didn't go as planned for Florida taxpayers, either.

The 12-acre campus, first announced in 2021, was supposed to offer graduate-level programs in business, engineering and law with a focus on financial technology, or fintech, and cybersecurity.

More: Much-touted UF campus plan for downtown West Palm Beach dies, leaving huge disappointment

In 2022, the Florida Legislature awarded UF $100 million for the West Palm Beach campus. But the legislation contained a giant loophole.

If the West Palm Beach campus didn't happen, the $100 million could stay with UF to use as it sees fit elsewhere in the state in a location outside Palm Beach County.

The campus didn't happen, and UF kept the money anyway.

Soon after the UF deal showed signs of dying, West Palm Beach Mayor Keith James said talks were afoot to bring a top, private, out-of-state university to the downtown land.

More Vanderbilt meetings planned with public officials

Diermeier said he plans to return to Palm Beach County during the next month to meet with more county commission members about the Vanderbilt campus.

He said Vanderbilt is skilled at having good relationships with state and local officials in Tennessee, and he expressed confidence that county and city government leaders in Palm Beach County would feel comfortable working with the university, too.

He also believes the more people learn about Vanderbilt's plans for the West Palm Beach campus, the more they will be supportive.

In addition to a doubling of Vanderbilt's business school size, the West Palm Beach campus also would feature degrees in the university's newest college, the College of Connected Computing.

This just-created interdisciplinary college would feature computer science, AI, data science and related fields. It also would collaborate with all of Vanderbilt’s schools and colleges.

Diermeier likened the potential effect of a Vanderbilt West Palm Beach campus to the effect that Stanford University had on Silicon Valley — and the resulting explosion of innovative technology companies that emanated from there.

"The impact that research universities can have on a community is very significant," Driemeier said.

Before becoming chancellor at Vanderbilt, Diermeier formerly was an assistant professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, then held key leadership positions at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago.
