Studentships and doctoral training

Get a studentship to fund your doctorate.

UKRI studentships offer funding for doctoral research. They also offer you access to training, networking and development opportunities to help you build a research and innovation career.

Our expectations for research organisations, supervisors and students are set out in the statement of expectations for doctoral training .

You could get:

• a minimum stipend of £19,237 per year for your living costs, which is paid to you in regular instalments
• support for your tuition fees (minimum £4,786 per year)

The stipend is usually non-taxable and does not need to be paid back. Some research organisations may offer more if you study in London, or they or one of their collaborators might decide to top up the payment. This will be outlined in the studentship advert from the research organisation.

We normally pay the support for tuition fees directly to your research organisation.

The levels given here are for the academic year 2024 to 2025. UKRI’s approach to doctoral stipend and fee levels will be reviewed through the  new deal for postgraduate research .

Additional support for your doctoral studies

As a UKRI-funded doctoral student, you may be able to access additional funding to cover the cost of other related training and development opportunities.

This could include:

• conference attendance
• language training
• overseas research visits
• internships or placements with a non-academic partner

The availability of support will depend on the research organisation and the training grants they have on offer. You should contact the research organisation you are interested in applying to, to find out what you could get.

Extra support if you have a disability

If you have a disability, you may be entitled to a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) on top of your studentship.

You should speak to your research organisation’s disability advisor to assess your needs. They can help put the right support in place, including a DSA application if necessary. You cannot claim DSA directly from UKRI.

DSA helps to cover the cost of any additional support that a person studying for a doctorate might need as a result of a disability, mental health problem or specific learning difficulty.

The allowance covers:

• non-medical personal assistance
• specialist equipment
• extra travel costs
• general expenses

Who can apply

Any prospective doctoral student wishing to study at a UK research organisation, including prospective international students, can apply for a UKRI studentship.

All UKRI-funded doctoral students will be eligible for the full award, both the stipend to support living costs, and home-level fees at the UK research organisation rate.

How to find opportunities

Many UK research organisations offer some form of studentship funding from UKRI. These opportunities will depend on the subject you want to study and will normally be advertised by the research organisations.

Research organisations may have additional opportunities that do not involve UKRI. UKRI supports around 20% of all UK-based postgraduate researchers. You should speak to the research organisation you are interested in to find out what studentships are available.

You could also consider using a specialist website like   FindaPhD  to look for opportunities.

When to apply

Research organisations set their own deadlines for applications.

Many open for applications early in the academic year and close in January or February. This is not a hard and fast rule. It is important that you check the deadlines for the research organisation where you want to study.

How to apply

You cannot apply to UKRI for a studentship. You must contact the research organisation you are interested in studying with and use their application process.

For doctoral students who are already studying with a studentship, there are opportunities to get additional funding to support placements that are separate from your doctorate.  Find training and development opportunities .

We offer scholarships, bursaries and other funding to help you with tuition fees and living expenses.

Funding opportunities open and close all the time, so please check this page throughout the year.

Types of funding

Government schemes, like Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs) and Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs), are the main sources of financial support for postgraduate researchers. We award over £7m of funding each year through  UK Research and Innovation (ukri.org).

These opportunities are open to students who pay tuition fees at the overseas rate. If you're unsure whether you're classed as a UK or international student for fee purposes,  check your fee status .

Commonwealth Scholarship

The University of York is a host university for the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. Various opportunities are available throughout the year. The majority of awards are funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Tan Kah Kee Scholarship

The Tan Kah Kee Scholarship offers postgraduate scholarships for Singapore citizens and permanent residents pursuing full-time PhD or Masters degrees.

• Open to: Students from Singapore

John Monash Scholarship

The John Monash Scholarship provides yearly funding to outstanding postgraduate taught and research students from Australia.

10 PhD scholarships in the UK for international students 2022

With a strong research culture on top of encouraging interdisciplinary research, the UK is a great choice if one wants to pursue a PhD scholarship in an exciting and stimulating environment with many research links. The UK is one of the most popular destinations for many international students with many top-ranked and world-class universities and a welcoming culture as well.

Being a research powerhouse means more access to cutting-edge research facilities, which can go a long way in conducting research during your PhD studies. The UK, however, as a developed Western country, has higher living costs, with some major cities and programmes bearing notoriously expensive price tags.

This can be a heavy burden for international students seeking a UK PhD degree. Fortunately, the UK has a great list of university PhD scholarships that may help you realise your dream.

Leeds University Business School: International Business Department Scholarship

The International Business Department of the Leeds University Business School is offering up to two PhD scholarships for international applicants; the deadline is Apr. 1, 2022. One of the world’s leading units for international business and among a handful of triple-accredited business schools in the world, this department is well-known for their exceptional research and teaching.

The award is for three years; the last two years are renewable subject to academic performance. The successful recipient will get a maintenance grant worth 15,609 pounds (standard UKRI rate for Session 2021/22).

University of Cambridge: Harding Distinguished Postgraduate Scholars Programme

Awarded to a select group of 25 brilliant University of Cambridge PhD students of all disciplines and nationalities, this programme aims to produce graduates who can make a tangible difference to the academic community with their excellent research. The majority will be affiliated with St Catharine’s College; the rest will be distributed among the other colleges. 

Depending on your chosen department, the last deadline is Jan. 6, 2022. The PhD scholarship winners will receive a generous package including the University Composition Fee and a 6,000 pounds personal allowance throughout their studies, an annual stipend of 18,000 pounds and student visa costs.

SOAS University of London CHASE

SOAS University of London is among the world’s top 50 for Arts and Humanities (QS rankings 2021) and is a top 20 UK institution for these same subjects (THE rankings). As part of the Consortium of the Humanities and the Arts South-East England (CHASE) funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, this Doctoral Training Partnership offers up to 56 Arts and Humanities studentships; a limited number is available for international applicants. 

You should first apply to SOAS by Jan. 10, 2022 so that you can work with your proposed supervisor(s) on the CHASE application to submit by Jan. 28, 2022. You can expect to receive a training grant and a stipend as well.

Aston University College of Business and Social Sciences

As a multidisciplinary college in Aston University, Birmingham, the College of Business and Social Sciences is home to researchers from Aston Business School, Aston Law School and the School of Social Sciences and Humanities. Up to six fully-funded PhD studentships are available for application to any of these schools’ programmes – the deadline is Feb. 28, 2022.

You will get full tuition coverage at the international rate plus an annual maintenance grant of 15,840 pounds (2022-23 rate) throughout your three years. You should have obtained a merit for your master’s dissertation besides a first class or second upper class honours degree.

University of St Andrews: Doctoral Scholarship in Biology and Statistics

St Leonard’s Postgraduate College at the University of St Andrews is offering a doctoral scholarship to a suitably qualified student to take up research on developing novel methods for estimating the abundance of breeding grey seals. You will have three co-supervisors, and can choose to matriculate in either Biology or Statistics.

The PhD scholarship covers full tuition fees for up to three and a half years on top of an annual maintenance stipend (the 2021-22 annual rate is 15,609 pounds). You will have access to the free GRADskills training programme as well. 

University of Liverpool: Accounting and Finance Subject Group

This PhD scholarship takes on a slightly different form as a  Graduate Teaching Fellowship (GTF) – the deadline is Jan. 7, 2022. If you have a first or upper second class honours degree plus a distinction for your master’s degree besides being committed to research, this GTF allows you to collect teaching experience together with your PhD studies.

Under the Accounting and Finance Subject Group, you will have the opportunity to complete a teacher training programme offered by the University of Liverpool . A living stipend of 15,609 pounds plus a fee waiver will be awarded to exceptional applicants.

Swansea University: the UKRI CDT in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Advanced Computing

At Swansea University , you can apply for the four-year fully funded opportunity to research upon these broad areas of particle physics and astronomy, biological and health, and mathematical and computer sciences. You will be trained in artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and high-performance data analytics.

After training in the first year, you will have several short-term work placements in the second and third years. Besides full tuition fees, you will enjoy a stipend of  15,921 poundsand other allowances; the closing date is Feb. 11, 2022.

University of Exeter – PhD Scholarship

The University of Exeter’s generous funding scheme consists of two funding parts funding – one Research Masters in Economics and then a PhD programme in either Finance or Economics – both at the Business School; you have to apply by Jan. 21, 2022. As part of the scholarship, students have to work as teaching or research assistants for about 180 hours (23 days) a year, which can help enhance your research and education skills.

The funding includes a combined stipend and teaching allowance for 180 hours of 19,000 poundsper year. Students can also apply for additional funding for research, development and conference travel expenses. 

Imperial College London: Chemical Engineering PhD Scholarship

One of the best universities in the UK, Imperial College London has up to 10 fully-funded Chemical Engineering PhD scholarships via the Chemical Engineering Department . You should have a First Class Honours Degree at master’s level in chemical engineering or a related engineering/science field. This scholarship is tenable for 42 months, covering both tuition fees and 21,400 pounds for maintenance.

You should apply by Jan. 31, 2022. If you are successful, you would be asked to select two projects; depending on your supervisor’s agreement, you can be given either your first choice or second one.  

Oxford University – Clarendon Scholarship

The Clarendon Scholarship is one of the most famous PhD scholarships. You do not need to submit a separate application form for this scholarship; when you apply for a Oxford University PhD programme, you automatically qualify to apply for the Clarendon Scholarship.

Your preferred programme at Oxford may have different deadlines but generally, January is the last application deadline to be eligible for this scholarship. This particular PhD scholarship covers full tuition fees and a living stipend of 15,609 pounds (2021-22 rate).

Joint PhD Scholarships

Three scholarships are available for the 2023/24 academic year for students applying to joint PhD programmes run in collaboration with the University of Hong Kong, National University of Singapore or the University of Sao Paulo, with King's as their home institution.

The King's Joint PhD Scholarship provides full tuition fees, stipend and an annual research grant.

King’s-China Scholarship Council PhD Scholarship programme (K-CSC) 2023-24

King's College London and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) hold an agreement to jointly fund PhD students to pursue research degrees at King's College London.

As part of the agreement, successful students will receive a scholarship that covers the tuition fee, an annual living allowance that includes overseas student health cover, a return airfare to London and visa application fees.

Please be aware that students funded through this scheme must abide by any additional terms and conditions set by the CSC. Scholars will be required to enter into a legally binding agreement with the CSC before they are able to take up the scholarship. If there are any significant developments that could affect/hamper a scholar's expected completion of the PhD, scholars are advised to get in touch with the Education Section in the Chinese Embassy.

A considerable number of K-CSC scholarship awards are available for the 2023-24 competition.

Research Council Studentships

For 2024 entry, 30% of the studentships funded by UKRI (STFC and EPSRC) are available to international students.  Research Council studentships are awarded by the School of Physics and Astronomy on receipt of an application for a PhD place through the online system and satisfactory interview, and do not require a separate application. Further information can be found at the individual research council links below. The initial application deadline is 8th January, 2024 for Astronomy applicants and 19th January, 2024 for Particle Physics, Nuclear Physics and Condensed Matter applicants. Applications reached after the deadline will continue to be considered until all the positions are filled.  To ensure your application gets to the correct people and won't be held up please ensure you indicate which Institute you are applying for: Astronomy, PPT, PPE, NP, CM (hard) or CM (soft). 

Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarships

Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarships are open to UK and overseas students applying to start their first year of study for an on-campus research degree in 2024-25.  Three Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarships are available for a PhD student starting their PhD research in the School of Physics and Astronomy in the 2024/25 academic year.  

The Scholarship covers the University tuition fee as well as a stipend equal to the UKRI minimum rate, for the relevant academic year of study, approximately £18,622 per year (2023/24 rate).  Subject to satisfactory progress, the Scholarship is offered for 4 years.  Applicants should indicate on their application to study for a PhD that they wish to be considered for this Scholarship.  To ensure your application gets to the correct people and won't be held up please ensure you indicate which Institute you are applying for: Astronomy, PPT, PPE, NP, CM (hard) or CM (soft). 

There are two doctoral training schemes open to UK/EU students: the Soft Matter and Functional Interfaces Centre for Doctoral Training and the Mathematical Modelling, Analysis and Computation (MAC-MIGS) Centre for Doctoral Training

Higgs Prize PhD Studentships in Theoretical Physics

Applications are invited for up to three international Higgs Prize PhD Studentships across theoretical physics, starting September 2024.  We are particularly interested in recruiting students with a strong mathematical background who are passionate to study and explore the fundamental laws of Nature.

The Prize will cover fees and a tax-free four-year stipend, matching the level of the UK Research Council Maintenance Allowance rates (£18,622 per annum (23/24 rate), as well as research funds of £1.5k per annum to cover books, computing and conference costs.

Applications are open to all students with no conditions on nationality. Furthermore, we value diversity, and strongly encourage female candidates and underrepresented groups to apply.

Before applying, interested candidates should get in touch with a supervisor from the Higgs Centre (a theoretical physicist who is an academic member of staff in the School of Physics and Astronomy) to support their application.

Applicants are advised to include in their application a statement of interest regarding the Higgs Prize PhD Studentship under the ‘Research Proposal’ category (there is no need to write a detailed research proposal, just a brief description of the general topic agreed upon with the supervisor). The selection panel will take into account supporting statements from the prospective supervisors.

Loyalty discounts for postgraduate students

The University is offering a tuition fee discount to students who successfully completed a University of Essex validated Bachelors degree, Masters degree, Postgraduate Diploma or Graduate Diploma, either at Essex or one of our partner institutions. The discount is available for the first year of study at both Masters and PhD level.

Other sources of funding

Uk government loans.

A Postgraduate Doctoral Loan can help eligible students with course fees and living costs while you study a postgraduate doctoral course, such as a PhD.

You can get up to:

• £29,390 if your course starts on or after 1 August 2024
• £28,678 if your course started between 1 August 2023 and 31 July 2024
• £27,892 if your course started between 1 August 2022 and 31 July 2023

If you apply after your first year

You can apply for a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan in any year of your course. But if you apply after your first year, you might not get the maximum amount.

• £12,167 if your course starts on or after 1 August 2023
• £11,836 if your course started between 1 August 2022 and 31 July 2023
• £11,570 if your course started between 1 August 2021 and 31 July 2022

What you need to know

• Whether you qualify depends on your course, your age and your nationality or residency status.
• The amount you’ll get is not based on you or your family’s income.
• The loan will be paid to you in 3 instalments of 33%, 33% and 34% each year. After your application has been approved, you’ll be sent a letter with your payment dates or you can check them in your online account.
• You get the first payment after your course start date, once your university confirms that you’ve registered.
• Use your online account to change your personal details, for example bank, contact details or course details.
• You may qualify for other funding , for example grants from charities or trusts.
• You will not be eligible for an Adult Dependants’ Grant, a Childcare Grant or Parents’ Learning Allowance from Student Finance if you’re studying a doctoral course.

A ‘home fees’ assessment by the University does not guarantee Government funding for fees or living costs. The Student Loans Company will conduct its own eligibility assessment. If you have been assessed as eligible for home fees based on an application to the EU Settlement Scheme, your entitlement to Student Loans Company funding for fees or living costs may be affected in future years if your status changes. Once registered at the University, all students, regardless of funding source and fee status, are liable for their fees. If you are from Wales

Most students starting a full-time or part-time postgraduate Doctoral course can apply for a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan to help with your course costs. How much you get does not depend on your household income.

You might also be able to get extra help on top of this if you have a disability.

You can borrow up to:

• £28,395 if your course starts between 1 August 2023 and 31 July 2024
• £27,880 if your course starts between 1 August 2022 and 31 July 2023

EU student funding

Following the UK's decision to withdraw from the European Union, EU students who started their studies after October 2021 are likely to be classed as international students for tuition fee purposes and you will need to pay international fees. We'll assess your fee status when you apply to Essex and if you are successful in gaining an offer, your fee status will be confirmed in your offer letter. A first step is to look online for sites which do this for you and then make an appointment to talk to the local branch of the banks which interest you. Don't be put off if you already have an existing overdraft. Many banks will now take on the responsibility of this is you are taking out a graduate loan.

Charitable trusts and grants

Information about charities and trusts that offer awards and sponsorship to students and their application procedures can be found in the Educational Grants Directory and The Grants Register. Copies of these are available in our Albert Sloman Library , as well as in most public libraries.

You can also try a grants search at Turn2us . Use the keyword "higher education" and then narrow your search by filling in other information about yourself.

Many charities and trusts are only able to award a small number of grants each year, so competition can be fierce. To be in with the best chance of receiving an award it is a good idea to:

• research charities and trusts carefully as they may have eligibility requirements (eg based on your area of residence, family background and subject area)
• apply as soon as possible (many give deadlines for applications)

East 15 Acting School - charitable trusts and grants

Funding for Acting and Drama courses can be limited and competition for grants is fierce, but it’s worth looking at the sources of funding above as well as these, which are aimed specifically at students in your field:

Some companies offer to sponsor students, and this is becoming an increasingly common source of funding in certain subject areas, primarily the sciences. Some firms will also consider finance-related disciplines such as accountancy and business studies.

EU students: you are welcome in the UK

More than 120,000 EU students choose to study in the UK each year. A UK education offers top-quality, prestige, and global job prospects. ‘International students are part of what makes our higher education sector world-class’, says UK Minister of State for Universities Michelle Donelan MP. EU students are welcome and are eligible for thousands of scholarships, health surcharge refunds and post-study work visas. According to Italian student Maria, despite policy changes on fees, student finance and visas, ‘the benefits far outweigh the costs’.

UK universities are among the oldest and most respected institutions worldwide. Four of the world’s top ten universities and 28 of the top 200 are in the UK. Across the UK’s 166 universities, academic standards are high, research is cutting-edge, and specialist faculties support students’ future success. Over one-quarter of international senior leaders (heads of state or prime ministers) studied in the UK. And there are more countries with a senior leader educated in the UK than in the US.

You will find a course to suit your unique interests

UK universities currently offer over 500,000 undergraduate programmes and many more at master’s level and beyond. Lioba, from Germany, chose to do her master’s in Clinical Neuroscience at University College London (UCL) when she couldn’t find a comparable course in her home country. UCL is a top ten university in the world and ranks first in Europe and second in the world for neuroscience. She received a £10,000 scholarship to support the cost of her studies. And she took advantage of cost-effective and environmentally friendly travel between Germany and the UK. ‘When I moved from Berlin to London, the bus ticket only cost 30 euros, and I didn’t have to pay extra to bring my suitcases’.

Lioba recommends studying in the UK, especially in an international research hub like London, to anyone wanting to gain a competitive edge in their career. ‘The research environment is really stimulating, and there is so much going on’, she says. ‘Studying [at UCL] has helped me get my foot in the door for my PhD, and I’m building great professional networks’.

Improve your English and boost your career prospects

Being immersed in a native English-speaking environment, inside and outside of the classroom, will improve your language skills and boost your career prospects. ‘The English language gives the UK one of the biggest advantages [as a study destination] over other European cities’, says Sara from Slovakia. With almost 1.5 billion speakers worldwide, English is by far the most spoken language in the world. As the primary international business language, studying in the UK will help you stand out in a competitive global jobs market.

'Today it's almost vital to speak English to work for an international company', says Cyril from France. 'In an application process, you may have to show in what contexts you've used English. It's real value added to say that you weren't just watching Netflix shows, but you did a master's degree in the UK'.

You also don’t need to speak ‘perfect’ English when you apply to study in the UK. Most universities require a minimum of ‘B2’ (or upper-intermediate) in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). To help non-native English-speaking students, UK universities offer additional English courses and language support.

‘Studying in English in England was amazing’, says Celeste from France. ‘When I first arrived, I was nervous about my strong French accent’. ‘I took advantage of the additional classes offered by my university, and my language skills have improved so much’. ‘I’ve even gotten used to all of the different regional and international accents’.

Most UK master's programmes can be completed in one year, which will save you both time and money compared with a traditional two-year degree.

Investing in your future costs less than you might think

A UK education is good value for money, with average costs being lower than in the USA and Australia. Seven in ten international students say they are progressing further, being promoted quicker and earning more because of their UK education. Most UK master’s programmes can be completed in one year, which will save you both time and money. You will only have to pay living expenses and tuition fees for one year, and you can transition into or back into work more quickly than in a traditional two-year programme.

With 166 universities to choose from across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, you will find a university and town or city to suit your budget. If you live in Northern Ireland, Wales or the north of England, your living costs will be substantially lower than in major cities like London. Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, was ranked first in the UK for student affordability and is almost three times cheaper than London. Tuition fees also vary across UK courses and institutions. So, if you study a clinical or lab-based programme at a Russell Group university, for example, you will likely pay more than if you were to do a humanities or social sciences degree at a ‘modern’ university that was established more recently.

There are thousands of scholarships available for students from the EU

Thousands of scholarships are available to EU students wanting to study in the UK. They range from part-funding, for example, covering part of your fees, to full-funding, which covers all programme fees, living expenses, and return flights to the UK from your country of origin. If you try out our scholarship finder tool , you'll see there are over 1,200 scholarships available for EU students to study at a university in the UK. With your student visa, you can also work for up to 20 hours per week during term time – a great way to top up your income and get some local work experience.

You are in the UK to study, but you will also make memories that will last a lifetime. Stella, from France, studied music management in London. ‘So many global artists come to the UK to perform. There are concerts every day of every genre’, she says. 'Despite what some French people think, the food in the UK is good and there are great restaurants everywhere’. London alone is home to 270 nationalities, 300 languages, and countless national cuisines from all over the world, not to mention fusions. So, if you ever miss the taste (or sound) of home, you won’t have to look too hard to find it.

You will be supported during your studies

In UK universities, students receive support from their lecturers and personal tutors. Personal tutors will help you improve your grades and prepare for exams or long-term projects like a dissertation. But they aren’t just about academics. They can also support you with any personal challenges, including adapting to student life in the UK. Over 20 per cent of teaching staff in the UK come from overseas, including the EU, and they have personal experience of moving to the UK and settling in a new country.

Postgraduate scholarships for international students

You can apply for a postgraduate scholarship from the UK government to cover things like course fees and the cost of living when you study in the UK.

International students from the EU aren’t eligible for these scholarships. If you’re from Malta or Cyprus you can still apply for Commonwealth Scholarships.

There are also undergraduate scholarships available if you’re from the Falkland Islands, St Helena or the Seychelles.

Apply for a scholarship to do a one-year taught masters

Check if your country is eligible for a Chevening Scholarship.

You can apply for a Chevening Scholarship if all of the following apply:

you have an undergraduate degree

you have at least 2 years’ eligible work experience

you meet the Chevening English language requirements

Scholarships for EU students in the UK

Before Brexit, EU students paid the same tuition fees as UK students, but students newly arrived from the EU starting university this year will be paying the same as International Students making a considerable difference to the cost of studying in the UK for EU students.

Funding support is still available

If you are an EU student thinking about coming to the UK to study, this year could be a good time to come. Despite Brexit and in fact, because of Brexit, many universities are this year offering “ EU transition scholarships”. These scholarships have been designed to ease the transition for EU students from UK fee status to International fee status and in some cases, they are offering the equivalent discount so that the fees are the same as they would have been before Brexit. These scholarships are valid for the duration of your degree and not just the first year.

Unfortunately, EU students will no longer be eligible for UK student loans, so you will still need to find an alternative way to fund your studies.

Here are some examples of what is being offered, but make sure to check out each university you are interested in studying at, to see if they are offering something similar. You can view these scholarships on the Funding Hub .

EU Transition Scholarship – Lancaster University

£7,000 a year is offered for Undergraduate and Postgraduate study to EU students whose Fee Status is International for courses starting in 2021

EU Transition Bursary – Coventry University

A fee reduction from International Fees to UK Fees for students domiciled in an EU member state.

EU Transition Award – University of the Arts London

A fee reduction of up to £10,000 per year for all eligible EU students who have been affected by the immediate impact of Brexit.

EU Bursary – Reading University

In order to support EU students through the transition period from Home fee status to International fee status, a bursary of up to £6000 is being offered to all eligible students resident in the EU commencing their studies in the 2021/22 academic year.

The EU Scholarship – Dundee University

A bursary of up to £6000 is being offered to all eligible students resident in the EU commencing their studies in the 2021/22 academic year.

EU Scholarship Scheme – University of South Wales

Details of the PhD programme in Pregnancy Research at the Centre for Reproductive Health, University of Edinburgh

Fully-funded PhD scholarships are available for up to 3 candidates

This 3-and-a-half year PhD studentship programme aspires to train the next generation of scientists in tackling pain and distress during pregnancy, encompassing but not limited to the impacts of adverse pregnancy on the mother, fetus and subsequent generations, and how pregnancy is impacted by adverse maternal health. Students will receive cross-disciplinary training aimed at equipping graduates with skills to drive future developments in improving pregnancy outcome. At the end of 3 years of PhD study, 0.5 years of funding is available to support approved activities that enable student career progression.

The programme is based at the Centre for Reproductive Health (CRH) within the Institute for Regeneration and Repair (IRR).

Specific projects will be available  from may 12 th 2024 when applicants are encouraged to contact group leaders whose projects they are interested in..

Students will benefit from the world-leading research at the CRH, which is led by a combination of non-clinical and clinician scientists. Students will be integrated into the broader CRH PhD programme, providing exposure to diverse aspects of Reproductive Health, and be embedded in the IRR’s Postgraduate Training Framework. Students will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities at IRR and the wider University, and benefit from a broad range of training opportunities which are available across The University of Edinburgh campus.

Training in Edinburgh : Edinburgh has a wide range of training opportunities, from those aimed at acquisition of general research skills and transferable skills ( Institute for Academic Development ) to advanced training courses in specific areas (e.g. image analysis, analysis of transcriptomic data sets).

Applications from UK and non-UK based students are welcomed. The deadline for applications is June 6th 2024 , and interviews will take place on June 26-28 th 2024 .

Full eligibility criteria and further details about the PhD studentships and application process as below,  but these studentships are only to support non-clinical students.  University of Edinburgh adheres to equality, diversity and inclusion principles.

This opportunity is open to UK and international students and provides funding to cover stipend (maintenance allowance at UKRI rate £19,237.00 for 2024-2025) and tuition fees. 

Applicants are expected to have a good honours degree in the sciences (biological, chemical or physical), at least UK level of 2.1 or the equivalent from non-UK universities and meet the English language entry requirements .  A Master’s degree in a relevant subject would be an advantage.

Personal statement (1 page in total) covering why you want to apply for a specific project(s). In the case you wish to be considered for more than 1 project, please indicate clearly your order of preference. How your career to date has prepared you to do this PhD, and how gaining this PhD will meet your long-term career goals

Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages) 

Two academic references using this template , submitted by the referee by the deadline

Where applicable 0.5 extra pages can be used to explain any exceptional circumstances that may have affected academic performance to date, non-linear career paths, or any other information we may find useful in ensuring adherence to the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion - This is optional and it is anticipated that the many applicants will not need to provide this additional document.

All application documents should be emailed to [email protected] by the deadline for applications,  6 June 2024 .  

Interviews will be in the format of a 7 min presentation by the applicant on a previous/on-going research project that showcases skills and knowledge.

This will then be followed by questions on the presentation and the application. The interview lasting about 45 minutes, taking place on Microsoft TEAMS.

Employer levy on graduate wages could replace fees, says union

Public supports getting firms that hire graduates to foot higher education funding bill, says union research.

England, Wales and Northern Ireland could scrap tuition fees entirely if governments imposed a 1 per cent levy on graduate employers, according to new research.

The University and College Union (UCU) said political parties should “remove the debt burden from young people accessing education and commit to publicly funding universities” as it outlined potential options for a future government to “fix” higher education funding.

A report prepared by consultancy firm London Economics for the UCU shows that a levy that functions in a similar manner to how an employer pays National Insurance contributions could remove the need for UK-domiciled students to foot the £11 billion fee bill each cohort currently pays and come at no extra cost to the taxpayer.

Employers would be charged when employing graduates on a salary over a certain threshold, with the levy varying by country, UCU said. This would stand at 1.13 per cent in England, 1.06 per cent in Wales, 0.8 per cent in Northern Ireland and just 0.07 per cent in Scotland, where tuition is currently free for Scottish students.

The union is not the first to propose a levy, with the idea growing in popularity as the UK searches for a solution to its higher education funding crisis, which has plunged dozens of institutions into deficit .

A recent survey for the Higher Education Policy Institute (Hepi) showed that an employer levy of 3 per cent on earnings over £25,000 for the graduates they hire was the most popular alternative model for funding higher education.

UCU’s own polling – conducted by the firm Savanta – shows that 62 per cent of people think students should pay less towards the cost of higher education and 53 per cent think employers should pay more.

A majority of voters who support either the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party, Plaid Cymru or the Scottish National Party say they support employers paying more towards education, while only 19 per cent of Conservative voters oppose it.

UCU said an alternative system to the employer levy could see a 3-percentage point increase to corporation tax, which would mean “only profitable businesses would pay for the UK’s university system, with those making the most profit paying the most”.

The union said “political parties need to put forward a realistic higher education funding model ahead of the coming general election” as it launched a campaign to “reclaim” higher education.

This will “fight for radical reform of higher education, based on a fair funding model and an end to exploitative working practices”, the union said.

UCU’s general secretary, Jo Grady, said higher education was “one of the few sectors in which the UK is still a world leader, but when dozens of universities are using financial instability to justify making big cuts, it is clearer than ever the funding model is irretrievably broken”.

“We need radical change – not just tinkering around the edges – to put higher education on a sustainable footing, and our polling shows the public backs an employer education levy,” Dr Grady added.

“Ahead of the general election, UCU is calling on all political parties to remove the debt burden from young people accessing education and commit to publicly funding universities.

“The report from London Economics shows there are clear options for a future government to pay for higher education and that it can do so without burdening individual taxpayers.

“Either a 1 per cent levy on employer National Insurance or a 3-percentage point rise in corporation tax can replace student fees.

“Higher education adds tens of billions of pounds to the UK economy, and business benefits enormously from the highly skilled workforce our sector produces. These increases would be a small price to pay to secure such an important public good.”
