Ph.D. by Research

phd czech republic

Studying for a Ph.D. through UNYP

One of the core values held by the University of New York in Prague is excellence in research. Offered at our partner, New York College Athens, in coordination with the University of Bolton, students will be able to earn their Ph.D. UNYP encourages graduates in all disciplines to consider studying for a doctorate – the highest academic award conferred by this university – or an MPhil. To this end, UNYP offers its students through its partners the opportunity to study for a Ph.D. or MPhil in any subject area in which we have relevant research expertise, in association with the relevant Academic Group, Research Centre, or Research Institute.

The Ph.D. by research is awarded to a candidate who presents and defends a thesis, after having critically investigated and evaluated an approved topic which results in an independent and original contribution to knowledge and demonstrates an understanding of the appropriate research methods within the chosen field. This Ph.D. program is designed for those who wish to pursue supervised research at the doctoral level, leading to the publication of a traditional doctoral thesis of sufficient quality to be deemed an original and independent contribution to the existing body of knowledge, and which justifies the award of a doctorate. It is possible to apply and register for the doctorate either directly or via the MPhil route.

Career opportunities with a doctorate from the University of Bolton

A doctorate is much more than the most advanced qualification in your specialist area of study. Successfully completing a Ph.D. is proof that you have mastered a set of transferable and highly desirable skills and qualities such as critical analysis, project management, high-level problem-solving, leadership and mentoring, challenging and providing alternative perspectives on received wisdom, advanced research, and presentation skills, self-confidence, determination, and persistence.

Ph.D. graduates have more successful careers and increased earnings than any other graduate. They are seen are the professional “movers and shakers” in the workplace, the employees who bring innovation and enterprise to the table.

Qualifying criteria

Doctorates are awarded to candidates who can demonstrate:

(i) the employment of original research or other advanced scholarship to create and interpret new knowledge, producing a body of work that is of a quality that satisfies peer review, extends the limits of understanding within the subject, and is worthy of publication;

(ii) the systematic acquisition and understanding of a substantial body of knowledge which is at the cutting edge of an academic discipline or area of professional practice;

(iii) the general ability to conceptualize, design, and implement a research project for the generation of new knowledge, applications, or understanding within the discipline, and to make adaptations and adjustments in the event of new issues arising;

(iv) a detailed understanding of the appropriate techniques for research and advanced academic inquiry within the discipline.

Moreover, the University would expect Ph.D. candidates to demonstrate the ability to:

(a) make and defend informed judgments on complex issues in specialist fields, often in the absence of complete data, and to be able to communicate their ideas and conclusions clearly and effectively to specialist and non-specialist audiences;

(b) undertake research and development at an advanced level, whether pure or applied, contributing substantially to the development within the discipline of new techniques, ideas, or approaches;

(c) demonstrate the exercise of personal responsibility and autonomous initiative in complex and unpredictable situations, in academic, professional, and similar environments, and any other professional qualities and transferable skills that would be reasonably expected at this academic level.

State Doctoral Exam and PhD Thesis Defense

To successfully complete their studies, students must pass the state doctoral examination and defend their dissertation.

State Doctoral Examination - The student informs his or her supervisor and the chairperson of the doctoral committee or doctoral board of his or her intention to take the state doctoral examination. This chairperson then determines the date of the state doctoral examination.

PhD Thesis Defense - When applying for PhD Thesis defense, students have to follow:

- the Guidelines on the Formal Requirements for Dissertations Prepared at the Faculty of Medicine

- the Masaryk University Faculty of Medicine Directive No. 1/2019 called Doctoral Study Programme at the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University

Students bring an Application for permission to defend the dissertation to representatives of the Office for Research and Quality. The students also send a  document about publications via e-mail to representatives of the Office for Research and Quality ([email protected]).

Before visiting the Office for Research and Quality, please also send the relevant staff member by e-mail: a) English title of the dissertation b) A proposal of the dissertation opponents, including current e-mail, correspondence and telephone contact, in agreement with the supervisor. The opponents are appointed by the dean on the proposal. The proposal of the opponents must comply with the following requirements according to the MU Study and Examination Regulations (Article 33, paragraph 5 and Article 31, paragraph 4, letter b) - there must be at least two opponents - at least one opponent must be external (not employed by Masaryk University) - the opponent must not be a supervisor or former supervisor - the opponent must not be a co-author of the dissertation (in the case of a set of annotated theses) or other persons in a similar position.

Together with all these requirements, according to the MU study and examination regulations , the so-called Thesis Archive in the MU IS must be completed before submitting the thesis to the Office for Research and Quality. The Office for Research and Quality staff will not accept incomplete materials!

The Office for Research and Quality staff will officially accept the thesis and publish it in the IS MU on the day of submission. From this day onwards, the thesis is publicly available and traceable. Therefore, the thesis can no longer be manipulated in any way and an assessment is prepared for this thesis. The opponent is obliged to draw up an opinion according to the MU IS, i.e. the thesis cannot be modified in any way on the recommendation of the opponent and only then the opinion is drawn up.

If the Office for Research and Quality staff has all the opinions available, it addresses the chairman of the doctoral board (if the programme studied has a specialisation, the chairman of the doctoral committee) with a request to set the date, time, and place of the defence (plus possibly the state doctoral examination, if it has not already been taken at an earlier date), and the chairman is also asked to form a committee. The defence will take place. In the case of a successful state doctoral examination and defence, the study is officially terminated on this date in IS MU and the student becomes a graduate of doctoral studies at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University.

PhD Programme in Media and Communication Studies

Deadline for submission is april 30, 2024.

APPLICATION AND ADMISSION CONDITIONS

The doctoral study program Media and Communication studies is designed for candidates who are deeply interested in following or related topics:

  • Media Studies
  • Journalism Studies
  • Political Communication
  • Social construction of reality
  • Discourse studies
  • Visual Journalism
  • Sports Journalism
  • Media History
  • Strategic Communication, Marketing and PR
  • Artificial Intelligence and Media, Big Data, Algorithms
  • Cultural Studies
  • Audience Studies
  • Participatory Studies

The study program prepares students for independent academic work in the field of communication, media and marketing studies at universities, with substantial knowledge of communication and media theories and methodologies.

The study contributes to critical thinking about the nature of modern and late modern societies, about the nature of opportunities and risks of society-wide communication processes and changes in their institutionalization in the past and in the present.

Our Institute is the only one in the Czech Republic to offer a doctoral study field specialized exclusively in media studies. Each doctoral student automatically becomes a member of ECREA, one of the world's most important professional organizations in the field. Our Institute is systematically building a network of contacts with foreign universities, which doctoral students can make extensive use of

Research activities at ICSJ focus on the following areas, amongst others:

  • Development of media, their position in society, and their relationship to other social institutions, from an historical perspective (with a focus on the period 1918-1989) and from a contemporary perspective;
  • The state and role of journalism, and the journalistic coverage of social realities, including alternative forms of journalism (and media);
  • The state and role of strategic communication and political communication/marketing;
  • The discursive-ideological and mediated construction of social realities, such as the environment & nature, migration, nation and polis, home and everyday life, history and memory, and technology;
  • Audience behaviours and audience interpretations of media content.

The graduate of the doctoral program of Media and Communication Studies knows methods of analysis of media production, media products, and content, audience, and users. He is an expert on the issues of the history and present of media and their position in changes in the social, political and cultural context, able to synthesize knowledge in the social sciences and humanities and to interpret current trends in media development and media and strategic communication.

Doctoral graduates are prepared for academic careers at universities in the Czech Republic and abroad, and for employment as media analysts in applied research. As social scientists, they can work in institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic or other scientific workplaces. They can also act as analysts of communication processes in the political or commercial sphere.

Forms of studies

The programme can be studied in a full-time form and in a combined form. We recommend to select the full-time form, as only this form entitles PhD students to a regular monthly scholarship. PhD students taking the combined form are not entitled to this scholarship.

Applicants choose the form of study when submitting the application. The basic duties are the same for students of both forms of study (completion of compulsory subjects, state examination, small and large dissertation defence, publishing and conference activities). Also the expectations about having a presence in Prague are the same. PhD students taking the combined form are not entitled to the regular scholarship, they are not expected to be involved in teaching at the Institute, and they can spend more time studying abroad.

The standard study period is four years, the doctoral program can be studied for a maximum of nine years. The maximum duration of full-time study is four years, i.e., after four years of study, the student automatically switches to the combined study and thus loses the right to a scholarship."

Admissions to Ph.D.

Requirements for admission to the doctoral programme of study in the academic year 2024/2025

  • The requirement for admission to the doctoral programme of study is the attainment of a degree of education (university education of the third degree) which would be acceptable for admission to the doctoral programme at a university in the country of origin of an applicant. However, the final decision regarding recognition of a respective qualification is issued by the Rectorate of Charles University, not by the Faculty.
  • The full-time form of study includes the involvement of a doctoral student in projects and activities of a department whose scope of scholarship covers the topic of a respective dissertation thesis (civil law, international law, etc.). Applicants are strongly advised to contact in advance not only a potential supervisor of their doctoral study, but also the head of a respective department. Should there be no preliminary agreement between an applicant and a respective department it is advised to apply for a part-time (combined) form of study, which is less demanding as to the presence of a student at the faculty.

The application for admission is to be submitted not later than on 30 April 2024 .

I. Information about the admissions procedure

In the academic year 2024-2025 , the Faculty of Law of Charles University (“Faculty”) offers study in one doctoral programme conducted in the English language, entitled “Theoretical Legal Sciences – Law and Legal Theory in European Context”.

The doctoral programme of study focuses on scholarly research and independent creative activities in the respective research field. The admissions procedure to the doctoral programme of study at the Faculty in the academic year 2024-2025 will be carried out under section 47 and following of Act No. 111/1998 Sb., to regulate higher education institutions, as amended (“Higher Education Act”), and in compliance with the Code of Admissions Procedure of Charles University.

An applicant may apply for each form (full-time; part-time/combined) of the doctoral study in a separate application; however, it is possible to submit both applications at the same time.

The Dean of the Faculty will appoint an examination board that will assess the extent of an applicant’s knowledge in the chosen programme of study, particularly in broader contexts.

Under Article 4 (5) of the Code of Admissions Procedure of Charles University, the Faculty will send an invitation to the entrance examination to an applicant through the electronic Student Information System not later than thirty days before the date of the examination. If the Faculty sends an invitation to an alternative entrance examination date, said time period may be shortened as necessary. An applicant will receive a password to sign into the electronic Student Information System after he/she has filed an application for study.

II. Organisation of, and requirements for the entrance examination

The entrance examination is held publicly in one round and taken orally. The examination is taken in English. The purpose of the entrance examination is to assess primarily the relevant academic knowledge of an applicant, as well as his or her initial capability of carrying out autonomous scientific activities and research within the selected programme of study.

The maximum total score to reach at the entrance examination is 60 points . The overall number of points achieved by an applicant is composed of the number of points reached within individual parts of the entrance examination.

The range of points in individual parts of the entrance examination is as follows:

  • Debate over the presented project of a dissertation – at least 7 pages along with a list of references (0 - 30 points);
  • Bonus points awarded for an applicant´s understanding of the content of study regarding (a) his or her  plan to be involved in scientific projects and research of the expected training unit (e.g. academic department), and in international research cooperation;  (b) linking his or her dissertation topic and outline with the research profile of his or her doctoral student training unit; (c) consent of a selected  supervisor to supervise the applicant´s project of the intended dissertation (0-10 points).
  • Assessment of the recent academic and research activities of an applicant (0-10 points).
  • Proving the knowledge resulting from studying relevant scientific literature within a wider context of the intended dissertation project (0-10 points).

The minimum overall number of points for an applicant to attain at the entrance examination in order to be admitted to study is 40 points .

The Dean will decide, as based on the recommendation of the Admission Commission, the maximum number of students admitted to the full-time form into the doctoral programme. The number of those admitted will be established with respect to:

  • equal distribution of full-time doctoral students to different academic units,
  • actual number of students in full-time form of study in the respective academic unit,
  • the pursue for internationalisation in doctoral programme.

If a greater number of applicants than the maximum number of admissions achieves a score of at least 40 points in the admission examination for the full-time form of study, the order of the best applicants is decisive. Those applicants who have achieved the highest number of points are therefore admitted to the full-time form of study.

Not later than within 30 days from the entrance examination, the Dean will issue a decision regarding admission or non-admission of the applicant to the doctoral programme of study. The Faculty will deliver the decision by restricted delivery (to the applicant´s own hands) via a licensed operator of postal services. The decision to admit an applicant to the doctoral program of study may be sent to the applicant via the electronic Student Information System if the applicant had expressed consent with such delivery in the electronic application for admission.

III. Dates of examination

Regular date:                    4   June 2024

Alternative date:              18  J une 2024

The Dean may grant an opportunity to sit for an examination on the alternative date to an applicant who has so applied no later than three days after the regular date of examination, provided that the applicant was not able to take part in the regular examination for serious and substantiated reasons, mainly health reasons. Regular study abroad as preparation for study at a higher education institution is considered a justified reason for granting an alternative date. No further alternative date is permissible. Admission Procedure 2024/2025

Admission procedure 2024/2025 for

all doctoral programs taught in English at Charles University, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, with the exception of the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology program

To apply for one of our doctoral study programmes taught in English you must hold or be working towards a master's diploma and have the necessary abilities for research. The latter consists mainly of the knowledge of the chosen field, English language, and the ability of independent creative work as well as teamwork. The assessment of these abilities is based on the documents submitted with your application and on the entrance examination, if the latter is not waived (see below). The entrance examination has two parts – examination in the expertise in the field (subject examination) and examination in the English language (language examination).

The admission procedure commences with the submission of an application form. Important dates:

  • Application's submission till April 30, 2024
  • Letters of recommendation are due till April 30, 2024
  • The language examination waiver must be requested and the compliance with one of the conditions for the waiver must be documented till April 30, 2024
  • Application for the waiver of the subject entrance examination as soon as possible, but no later than May 31, 2024
  • Invitation to take the entrance examination in mid-May, 2024
  • Entrance examination dates: June 17 and 18, 2024
  • Alternative entrance examination date: June 25, 2024, can be requested for serious reasons only
  • A document certifying completion of a university education at Master's level needs to be delivered as soon as possible after the application submission, and in any case no later than September 30, 2024.

If the applicant has submitted an application for recognition of foreign education and no decision has yet been made on it, the deadline for delivery of the document is extended to October 22, 2024. For students graduating between September 1, 2024 and September 30, 2024, the deadline is also extended till October 22, 2024.

Admission for studies in one of our doctoral study programmes taught in English except the programme Physics Education and General Problems of Physics will be granted to the applicants who

  • successfully passed the subject part of the entrance examination or they were granted a waiver of it,
  • successfully passed the language part of the entrance examination or they were granted a waiver of it.

Admission for studies to the doctoral study programme Physics Education and General Problems of Physics taught in English will be granted to the applicants who

  • successfully passed the subject part of the entrance examination and achieved rank 1 in the ranking of applicants,
  • successfully passed the language part of the entrance examination or they got a waiver of it
  • did not obtain the confirmation of the waiver of the subject entrance examination before mid-May, 2024.

The invitation to an entrance examination is delivered through the University Electronic Information System. In mid-May, 2024, all applicants without a waiver receive an invitation to take the entrance examination from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. If the Faculty approves the waiver after sending out the invitation, the invitation ceases to apply.

The entrance examination consists of two parts, subject part and a language part. The subject part of the entrance examination takes the form of a discussion about the chosen study programme. The committee gives the applicant three questions related to the chosen study programme. The committee judges the correctness of the answer, the knowledge of the field and overall readiness for doctoral studies. Each answer is evaluated on the binary Pass/Fail scale. The applicant must obtain three passing grades. If the applicant has chosen one of the thesis topics offered by the faculty and has obtained an approval of a future supervisor, or if the committee accepts the annotation of the applicant‘s own topic, the applicant will successfully pass the exam with only two passing grades from three questions.

The entrance examination consists of two parts, subject part and a language part. The subject part of the entrance examination takes the form of a discussion about the field of Physics education and general problems of physics. The committee gives the applicant three questions related to the field of the study programme. The committee judges the correctness of the answers, the knowledge of the field and overall readiness for doctoral studies. Each answer is evaluated on the scale of 0–30 points, the applicant can therefore obtain at most 90 points for all three answers. In order to pass the exam, the applicant must obtain at least 60 points. If there is more than one successful applicant, the committee will rank the applicants according to the total number of points they obtained. Admission for studies to the doctoral study programme Physics Education and General Problems of Physics taught in English will be granted to the candidate who successfully passes both parts of the entrance examination and obtains the highest score from the subject part of the examination among all applicants.

The language part of the entrance examination consists of verification of knowledge of the English language in the form of a written test conducted in person. The applicant may obtain a maximum of 100 points, the threshold for passing the exam is 50 points. If the applicant cannot take part in the face-to-face test for objective reasons, it is possible to take the test online at the Department of Language Education of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics under the same conditions. In this case, the student must contact the Study Department two weeks before the exam at the latest and ask for a permission to take the exam online.

The subject entrance examination cannot be waived for applicants to the study programme Physics Education and General Problems of Physics.

The subject entrance examination may be waived for applicants for any study programme (with the exception of the programme Physics Education and General Problems of Physics) who have chosen one of the thesis topics offered by the faculty and obtained an approval of a future supervisor, and for whom at least one of the following conditions applies:

  • they have achieved excellent results in their master's study programme in the field of Physics, Computer Science, or Mathematics, corresponding to the field of the doctoral programme they are applying to;

It is necessary to apply for the waiver and prove that the applicant satisfies some of the above conditions, by no later than May 31, 2024

A. The applicant spent at least two years of his/her previous education at secondary or university level with English as the sole language of instruction in one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, Malta, New Zealand, South Africa, UK or USA.

B. The applicant does not need to take the language examination of English if (s)he has already passed one of the following exams (in some cases we recognize the exam only with a minimum score or level):

  • ESOL International (C1 – C2)
