Banaras Hindu University (BHU), formerly called Central Hindu College, is a collegiate central university situated in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was founded in 1916 jointly by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, the Maharaja of Darbhanga Rameshwar Singh, Maharaja of Banaras Prabhu Narayan Singh, Sunder Lal, and British Theosophist and the Home Rule League founder Annie Besant. With over 30,000 candidates residing on campus, it is the largest residential university in Asia.

BHU Ph.D. Admission Criteria 

In order to be able to write the Entrance EXAM, STUDENTS should be holding a Master’s course degree in any field. A student must have passed the qualifying test with the minimum required marks that is 50% of marks in the academic records. Since there are more than 15 BHU Departments offering the Ph.D. course in a different set of courses which further vary in terms of the minimum eligibility criteria. The table below tabulates the minimum eligibility criteria along with the subjects offered for the BHU Ph.D. course admission:

Faculties of Arts, Social Sciences, Science • Languages: Arabic / Bengali / English / Chinese / French / Tamil / Linguistics, etc.

• Social Sciences: Economics / History / Political Science / Psychology / Socio etc.

• Science: Biochemistry / Computer Science / Chemistry / Geography / Geology • Master’s course degree in any of the allied subjects with a minimum of 55% aggregate.

• candidates must have studied common subject combinations as well.

Faculty of Management Studies Management Studies • MBA / MMS / MIBA / MBA-Agriculture / PGDM / PGP course degree with minimum 60% of marks aggregate. 

• 1st class graduates with professional course degrees like CA / CS can also apply.

Selection Criteria

Admission to the BHU Ph.D. study course is based on either:

* BHU RET marks scored OR

* Those candidates who are NET or JRF qualified are exempted from appearing for BHU RET exam.

* Qualified sandha are then shortlisted for the BHU RET Counselling which includes the seat allocation and the final admission formalities upon the candidate’s personal interview.

BHU releases a list of the candidates who are exempted from appearing for the BHU RET year after prospective students submit their applications. This list is released upon checking the candidate's scores or rank in the national level test like NET / JRF / SLET or other related examinations.

BHU Ph.D. course Admission Procedure

The application for admission in a Ph.D. study course offered by the BHU can be filled out online on the official admission application website. The stepwise procedure for applying online is mentioned below:

* Register yourself on the official website if you visited the site of the university for the first time.

* You have to enter all your identification details for registration completion.

* Fill the admission form with all the required details and select the course of your choice.

* You will be required to upload your recent passport size photograph and signature.

* To complete this online application procedure - Pay the online application form fee. The application form fee is INR 600 for the general category and INR 300/- for SC/ST category

* Take the printout of the paid receipt for future reference.

BHU PhD Eligibility

Students who wish to apply for the BHU PhD course must have completed a master’s degree in a relevant field with at least 60% marks. The admission process is based on BHU Research Entrance Test (RET) scores. 

Candidates with valid NET-JRF/NET-LS/GATE/SLET scores are exempted from appearing in the BHU RET exam. Meeting the basic eligibility criteria indicates that the applicant possesses the academic foundation required to complete the PhD course.
