IIT-Kanpur Brings 'No Termination in First Trimester' Policy For PG Students Amid Mental Health Concerns

IIT Kanpur has come up with a 'no termination in first trimester' policy. (File Photo)

The policy is to be implemented from July when the session begins and is one of the major academic reforms to come into force post a recent spate of student suicides on campus.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)- Kanpur has come up with a ‘no termination based on first semester performance’ policy to help postgraduate (PG) students cut down on stress. The policy is to be implemented from July when the session begins and is one of the major academic reforms to come into force post a recent spate of student suicides on campus.

One of the first generation IITs, the institute saw three such incidents on campus between December 19, 2023 and January 18 this year, which included two research scholars and an MTech student allegedly dying of suicide. In one of the cases, the incident occurred shortly after the student was issued a termination notice by the institute while he could not make an appeal against it in time.

According to Professor Shalabh, dean of academic affairs, IIT-Kanpur, the ‘no-termination policy in first semester’ will be implemented from July this year. “The institute has decided that no student will be terminated based on their academic performance (cumulative point index (CPI)) in the first semester and that they will be given another chance to qualify. This will allow students time to improve on their CPI without getting stressed about it,” he said.

However, if a student performs below the mark even in the second semester, then there will be termination as per rules, he added. But, even upon termination, students have a chance to make an appeal to their faculty against the decision, and if considered appropriate, the termination is then revoked.

Protests Led to The Policy

The third suicide this January had sparked protests on campus with students demanding a slew of academic reforms including transparency in grading, evaluation twice per semester and, setting up an ombudsman panel with faculty, an external member as well as student representatives, among others.

Following the protests, an Open House with students was held by the institute where the demands were put forward formally with the latter agreeing in-principle to some of these and panels were constituted to work on the same. For these to turn into implementable reforms, a decision on each policy has to be taken by the institute’s Senate, which is the highest academic decision-making body of an IIT.

“A number of academic reforms are being worked upon, which will be introduced once the Senate approves of it,” said a senior faculty member.

An internal survey of PG students carried out by a student body on campus last year stated that at least 80% of those pursuing research programmes faced mental health issues while 60% had at least once thought of dropping out in the entire duration of the programme.

What Students Say on The Policy

Student representatives from various welfare bodies on campus said that while several reforms were agreed upon by the institute’s administration, these are yet to be implemented.

“Regarding the no-termination policy, students who were already past their first semester earlier this year were also taken care of. The administration had written to different departments to repeal the termination of any students, who were under warning. The new students will get benefit of this policy from July,” said a PG student on the condition of anonymity.

For any student, the PG student added, if they are terminated right after the first semester, it shatters not just their own but their family’s dreams as well. “It becomes a depressing state for many who being associated with an IIT have always had the habit of excelling in life from school and suddenly they are out because they couldn’t work out a course in a semester. There are times when both students and mentors having taken a new project get stuck and are not able to come to the findings of research, but it’s the student who finally has to face the termination,” the student said.

For PG students, the admissions are done in July while the result of the first semester exams is out in December.

Reforms in the Works

According to student representatives, many fundamental changes are being worked out to help improve students’ mental health while some of these are in the advanced stages. “For bringing greater transparency in the grading system for research scholars, it is being planned that at the end of each semester, students will write a short report or a summary documenting their work and the mentors while grading will have to write their comments on why they decided on a particular grade to a student,” said a research scholar.

Currently, for research programmes, the practice is that the guide will just give an ‘S’ (satisfactory) or ‘X’ (non-satisfactory) grade depending on the student’s performance.

Another reform being worked upon for PhD students is an internal review with the formation of a ‘monitoring panel’ for each research scholar. The panel will have faculty members, who are experts in the field, but not from the same department. “PhD students will be required to make a presentation of their work to the panel in a specific duration every six months or a year on which they will get feedback from the panel. This is the practice in many American as well as some European universities, where the funding for a research project is reviewed every semester,” said another research scholar.

In India, PhD students get a fixed stipend for the entire five years’ duration of the course.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Computer Science and Engineering IIT Kanpur

Admission to m.tech. program.

For detailed information on MTech admission in IIT Kanpur, including information on how to apply online, please visit the admission site of Dean of Academic Affairs. This page provides brief information relevant to applicants to CSE department.

Admissions to the MTech program in the Department of CSE are normally made in the semester starting from July each year. The admission process typically starts some time in April. No admissions are made to the MTech program in the semester starting from January.

Eligibility for Admission

The minimum eligibility conditions for admission to the MTech program are given below.

The candidate should have secured a minimum of 55 percent marks or a CPI (Cumulatie Performance Index) of 5.5 (on a 10.0 scale) in the qualifying examination.

The applicant must have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Master's in Science. The applicant must have a sufficient background in Computer Science to complete the degree requirements with reasonable performance. Those who are appearing for the final examination, and whose results are going to be available before the last date of submission of records (usually around 1st September) are also eligible to apply.

The candidate must have a valid GATE score. We strongly prefer that the GATE score be in Computer Science. GATE score in Information Technology is also acceptable. In rare cases, we may call those candidates for test/interview, who have appeared in GATE in EE, EC, or Maths, and have an exceptionally high score. Those with GATE in these other subjects must have gained some Computer Science background, and it should be clear from their application. (For example, they might have experience in software development. Or they might have done several computer science courses as electives while they were doing their BTech/BE courses.) However, please note that in the last few years, we have not called any such candidate for test/interview.

The above requirements do not necessarily apply for admission of the candidates under QIP (Quality Improvement Program), Defence Personnel and other sponsored categories.

**Admission for IIT Graduates **

GATE may not be necessary for those candidates who have done their BTech from one of the seven IITs. BTech graduates from IITs with overall CGPA/CPI being more than 6.5 and CGPA/CPI of last two semesters being more than 8.0 can apply without GATE score. Such students however will get fellowship upon admission only when their overall CGPA/CPI is more than 8.0.

Admission Procedure

In the department of computer science and engineering, admission process for the MTech Program is a two step one. The candidates are invited to the written test and interview on the basis of their performance in GATE. A few candidates with exceptionally high GATE score in CS/IT are offered direct admission (that is, without going through test/interview). The admission process for those candidates invited to the written test and interview is purely based on their performance in test and interview. GATE score is not considered for admission beyond issuing a call for test/interview.

Some candidates with lower GATE score but with other achievements such as publications, industrial experience of at least two years may also be invited for the interview and written test. The written test consists of questions from basic computer science courses as well as some questions to test the analytical abilities and aptitude of the candidate.

It is emphasized that the Gate cutoffs for each year are determined based on the number of applications that we receive and vary from year to year.

The short listing of the candidates to be called for test/interview, etc., and sending letters of call for the same will be done by the Department Post- Graduate Committee (DPGC). A Selection Committee will be constituted for admission to each Program of the Department. This Selection Committee will conduct the written test/interview, etc. and recommend candidates for admission.

Applicant for Part-time program

An applicant for part-time program should send one copy of the application directly to the Convener, DPGC, while a second copy must be forwarded by the employer, preferably before the due date, but in no case later than the date of test/interview. No candidate will be considered for admission if the employer's permission is not received by such date.

Admission of INRA (Indian Nationals Residing Abroad)

Such candidates must have been residing abroad continuously for at least one year at the time of applying admission. Their applications may be processed as and when they are received or according to any schedule convenient to the Department. The applications are scrutinized to make sure that, both in terms of qualification and attainment, they are compatible with the students admitted in the general category.
