In this article, I’m going to cover all that I’ve learned in my 2+ years of blogging, many failures, and a few hundred dollars of income (after a year and a half of $0 in income) on how to write a movie review blog.

Without further ado, let’s get into it.

What Is a Movie Blog?

A movie blog is an online site containing articles related to movies.

The movie blog can be more personal, containing one person’s journalistic reviews, thoughts, or insight on a movie or it can be a bigger organization that covers film topics from several different publishers.

Starting a profitable movie review website is no easy feat. It takes time, patience, and consistency to make real headway. To get you started on the incredibly rewarding adventure here are 4 quick steps to help give you good footing:

• Be prepared to invest time and money if you want to build a movie blog that is profitable.
• You can focus on analyzing a specific part of popular movies
• You can approach movies from a rare pov
• You can review a specific genre of movies
• If you don’t have your niche right away don’t hesitate to get started anyways. As you become more familiar with what is and isn’t available in the movie blog world, you’ll find where your voice really shines.

How to Write a Movie Review Blog – 9 Steps

You’ve got your movie blog website! Yaaayy!! Now the fun begins – writing and publishing your movie reviews.

Let’s break down the writing process into steps to help you find your stride when crafting your own movie reviews.

1. Plan your Content

In order to properly plan your content, you need to first learn about SEO & Keywords.

SEO is an acronym that stands for S earch E ngine O ptimization. 

This means that you have to make sure every page and every post on your website is easily detectable and understood by big search engines like Google. 

For example, you write a movie review for the film Titanic. 

You want Google to easily be able to tell that you wrote a movie review on the film Titanic. This will get your review a better chance of being discovered by someone looking for a review of the Titanic. 

But then you get this issue – when you look up “Titanic Movie Reviews” on Google there are 11,300,000 results. Good luck getting discovered among the sea of results. 

So, to make SEO work a little better for you, try narrowing down your focus on the movie Titanic. 

Too many times, I see movie review blog posts with titles like:

“ Die Hard | Review ” or

“ Fight Club | Review 2022 ” or

“ The Godfather Movie Review ”

And honey, all I gotta say is that your stunning review is going to get drowned out by Rotten Tomatoes and Roger Ebert. Your review is not going to get discovered unless people are already specifically following your blog. Even then, it doesn’t mean they’ll read everything you post. 

So when you want to create a movie review that gets discovered, you have to focus your review on Google search terms that are being neglected or that have not been well-answered. 

This is where keywords come into play.

A keyword is a word or phrase that labels your article so that Google knows what your article is about.

So back to our Titanic example, instead of having the keyword and title of your review (since your keyword should definitely be in your title) as “Titanic Movie Review”, you might change your keyword/title to “Titanic ‘I’m Flying’ Scene Analysis.”

When you search this updated title in Google, there are results close to this answer but nothing exact. So try to really nail this review of the “I’m Flying” scene in Titanic on the head and it could end up ranking on the first search page of Google.

There are also a lot fewer search results – 1,240,000 – so less competition than simply having your keyword/title be “Titanic Movie Review”.

So the next question you may ask is, how then can I find the best keywords to maximize SEO for my movie review blog post?

Well, hang tight because I’m going to show you a few clever tricks I use when searching for a good topic to focus my movie review on.

Tips/Tricks/Tools for Keyword Research:

The Google Search Bar

• The Alphabet Method – type in the movie you’re researching for, followed by just a single letter of the alphabet, and see the top search options that pop up in the Google dropdown suggestions. Those are common search terms that people are looking for. View the gif below to see an example of the method I’m talking about. I use this for every movie I plan to review to give me ideas on what to write about.
• The Question Method – similar to the Alphabet Method, type in the movie you plan to review and then type in a question prefix word like “who, what, when, where, why, how, or ‘is the’…” before your movie to see what questions Google is getting about the movie you’d like to review. View the gif below to see an example of the method I’m talking about.

Google Ads Keyword Search Tool:

• In Google Ads and under the planning tab there is the option for “Tools and Settings.” Click on Planning and go to the Keyword Planner. The Keyword Planner will give you the opportunity to input keywords and see how often those keywords are researched in Google and how much competition those keywords have. I try to aim for keywords with at least 100-1k monthly searches and low competition.

Keywords Everywhere

• Keywords Everywhere is an extension add-on for Chrome or Firefox that gives you search volume data and trend data for any keyword you input in a search bar. Every time I look up a keyword on Google, Keywords Everywhere gives me data on how popular that keyword has been over the course of time, trending keyword options, related keywords, and more.

The Google Search Bar, Google Ads Keyword Search Tool, and Keywords Everywhere are just a few really useful free tools you can use to help you find a good keyword for your movie review.

2. Watch the Movie

I know this step is often overlooked so be sure that you actually watch a movie first before the review.

And when you watch the movie, keep your main keywords in mind.

Since we’ve decided to focus on the “I’m Flying” scene in Titanic, when we watch it, we’ve got to pay extra close attention to the details of this scene so that we can write a riveting review around it later.

It pays to watch the movie within a day or two that it comes out in theatres or on a streaming platform.

3. Take Notes Immediately After

When watching a movie on a streaming service like Netflix or Hulu, try to scribble notes as you watch since you can always rewind if you miss something. In theatres, it’s a bit harder because it’s dark and there’s no rewind button, so take notes immediately after you finish watching the film.

This is so that your thoughts and emotions towards the film are still fresh and easy to remember.

Include the Essentials

In every movie review there are three elements that are essential to a well-rounded, thoughtful piece:

• A Conclusion
• A Final Rating

A synopsis is a non-spoiler summary of what the movie is about. This should be placed near the beginning of the review before you get into your opinions.

A conclusion summarizes your main point at the end. What is your overall thought on the movie? Someone should be able to read the last paragraph and get a gist of everything you said earlier in the review. Your conclusion is what you’re really trying to say but condensed into a few sentences.

Don’t make your scale out of 46 with 46 being the worst and 3 being the best. Make it easy to understand. Make it make sense.

This may not work for everyone but sometimes just writing whatever is on top of your mind reduces the intimidation of a plain white document and gets the creative juices flowing.

To do this Freestyle method you must first start with this mindset: “Write the worst movie review known to man.”

This will help take the pressure off of yourself to write perfect, sound perfect, or to have your grammar sounding goodly.

The second mindset of freestyling is “Don’t look back.” We’re not editing anything in this stage, just getting all those overflowing thoughts on paper.

This strategy is best when you’ve finished watching a movie and are just overwhelmed with things to say.

A good example of a freestyled review is this one here . It’s a little unhinged yet finds a way to stay focused on the main point of contention with the film.

• Create a List

10 funniest moments, 3 surprising cameos, 5 most heart-breaking quotes…

If there is a pattern in the movie that can be put into a list, then go ahead and just list them out.

With each item on the list, add a few sentences to explain and justify why it’s on the list. 

It’s also good to include some images for each listed item if possible just to add some liveliness to the review.

Not only are lists an easy way to summarize and discuss main plot moments, but they are also great for SEO. Lists are very easy for people to follow and let people know exactly what to expect from spending their time on your review.

If you’re having a really hard time knowing where to start with a movie review or just feel unmotivated, I highly recommend giving a movie review generator a try.

The Movie Review Generator is a tool created for movie review inspiration and guidance. It’s an electronic template that will crank out a full review after you input a few words, phrases, or make some dropdown selections.

No lie, this is the easiest way to start off a movie review especially when you don’t have anything particularly remarkable to say about the movie. 

Some movies inspire a lot of thought and some don’t but it’s nearly impossible to create a profitable movie blog without at least semi-consistently posting content. So you gotta find a way to FIND something to say even if it doesn’t immediately come to you. 

Using a movie review generator is a great tool for some drafting inspiration.

5. Edit Your Writing

After completing your draft, no matter how rough it is, move your draft over to a brand new post page on your website for editing.

Editing within your website will allow you to utilize SEO plugins, like the Rank Math plugin, to analyze your reviews in order to make sure it’s fully optimized for easy discovery on search engines. 

So first, insert your keyword into the Rank Math focus keyword box. Given the earlier Titanic example we would put “Titanic ‘I’m Flying’ Scene Analysis” in as the focus keyword.

After you do this, Rank Math will analyze your article to see how well it adheres to the keyword you want to rank for. The goal is to get the keyword score as high as possible and into the green range.

Go through all the SEO recommendations in the Rank Math tab:

• Come up with a title that includes your keyword
• Add the keyword into your meta description
• Add the keyword in your permalink
• Find ways to naturally sneak your keyword throughout your movie review
• Add images with the keyword as your alt text
• Etc.., Etc…

After you get through the suggestions on the Rank Math tab, go through your draft again and group each paragraph under bigger themes, sections, or schools of thought if you haven’t already.

Don’t be afraid to get rid of sentences that don’t have a place within the bigger discussion.

Use short paragraphs, an eye-catching title, and break up your article with images, separators, videos, lists, anything to break up the monotony of plain words.

Include transitions from paragraph to paragraph and from section to section.

Make sure everything is easily comprehensible, words are spelled correctly, and your grammar is good – become a critic of your own writing.

But at the same time – don’t lose your voice. There’s no need to be stoic, boring, or academic, just be clear, easily comprehensible, and search engine optimized.

6. Include Images

Looking at a large chunk of words can be a bit overwhelming so it’s a good idea to break up your words with some images. You don’t need to overdo it but at least 1 or 2 is nice.

Near the beginning of the article, around the synopsis, include an image of the movie. 

Now, images like movie posters can be a finicky thing because you can run into legal problems.

Images that you find online are often the intellectual property of someone else so you can’t use them without permission. Because of this, you have to find movie images that you’re legally able to use.

Tips/Tricks for including images in your movie blog:

Register with an EPK company

• Go to EPK.TV and under the login button, there is an option to register for an account. If they accept you, you’ll have access to tons of movie images and behind-the-scenes footage.

Create your own movie poster s

• Here’s an example of a movie poster made with Canva Pro that did particularly well at bringing people to this site from Pinterest .

• I LOVE gifs.
• Giphy is an online collection of gifs and is connected to WordPress. So if you use WordPress, you can easily insert Giphy’s gifs into your posts. With Giphy, they insert their own link and information on your page along with the gif you select which isn’t the worst but can be a bit annoying (hover over the gif above to see what I mean). And also, if anything happens to their website or the gif you used gets deleted from their site then you have an unsightly hole in your page. Besides that though, if you vibe with gifs, they’re a fun way to break up a blog post.

One last thing to keep in mind with images –

Be careful of the file weight and size of images, gifs, and videos on your blog site since if an image takes up too much space, it will slow your website down. Google doesn’t like slow websites and will likely rank you lower if it sees your website is slow. There are tons of plugins to speed up your website but none of them has worked as well as Smush and WP Rocket in my case.

7. End it right

Invite people to comment, discuss, and read more of your content before closing out the review. 

Encouraging discussion is a good way to get others more engaged in your reviews and invested in what you have to say. It’s also a good way to get feedback on your content.

Include a call to action. Sometimes it’s as simple as just asking. Ask readers to comment, like, subscribe, and share your posts.

8. Customize Settings & Post Data

Before you post, make sure you update all of your post settings. This includes selecting the categories your post falls under, uploading your featured image for the post, and inputting tags for the post. 

If you’re using Rank Math Pro be sure to customize the Movie Schema to include your editor rating for the movie along with the movie title, director, and release date so that Google is aware that you’re reviewing the stated movie.

The post settings, the categories that you place your blog in, and the featured image are important aspects of your post that will help draw readers to your movie review. So, don’t forget to update those settings before posting.

9. Final Preview & Post

Preview your final draft and give it a quick read before posting. Read it as if you’re a visitor to your site. Are you getting bored? Are you skipping certain chunks? Be mindful of it and make the necessary changes.

Double-check before posting that you’re satisfied with the permalink because redirecting links, later on, can make your website slower.

Be sure your Rank Math Score is in the green range and that your post is SEO optimized for your keyword as much as possible.

Finally, breathe in – POST YOUR REVIEW – and breathe out.

Hi, thank you for the valuable information. Could you please tell me where to take movie posters or celebrity images for blog? As most of these images are copyrighted.

Some movies have images available for press use on the website EPK.TV. For Disney movies, they house electronic press kits (EPK) on their own website so you can just look up the movie name with the words “EPK” and it’ll take you to the website where Disney has images and interviews and BTS footage made specifically for press and to get the word out about the movie.

You can also filter out Google search images to find pictures that are not copyrighted. You can go to the image search of Google, then go to “Tools” then “Usage Rights” and then filter your search to only include images for “Creative Commons licenses” as these should be ok to use.

When I can’t find an image through an EPK, I just use the image from IMDb . Although this is not technically the most legal way to go about obtaining images, as long as you’re not using the images on products that you’re selling, you most likely will be fine.

I also will use screenshots from movies as well in articles but I don’t put the images on products for commercial use, just for reference which hopefully falls under fair use laws .

When in doubt, I just link and credit back to the original source of the image. If there is an issue with the image, then the owner will usually just contact you to take it down. You’ll have to be more prudent with the images you use once your business becomes bigger so I’d recommend a lawyer at that point.

This is not legal advice as I’m not a lawyer at all. This is just what I do for the time being. The best bet is always to get your images directly from the studio that is creating the movie but as a small time blogger, this is not possible right away so EPK.TV, or go to the studios website as they usually have images for press use available there as well.

Hi! Glad you found the article helpful 🙂 With EPK.TV, usually they only have publicity packages for newer movies and they usually expire a few months after the film comes out. When I can’t find any posters through EPK.TV I usually just search on google “[the movie/tv name] EPK” and sometimes the studio website has it or under Google images I’ll filter out the images under Usage Rights for something with a Creative Commons license. Don’t create a generic blog that focuses on a niche like “ movies ”, which is too broad, or “ movies in 1975 ” which would be too narrow

Instead, you want to find the sweet spot for your film blog niche, where it’s not so broad that it’s impossible for you to get noticed, or so narrow that you’re left with very little room for growth. 

You must choose a niche for your blog that will allow you to attract an audience while giving you room to expand your blog in the future. 

Why it’s Important to Choose a Niche

By choosing just one narrow niche, you make it more likely that you will be able to amass an audience of engaged followers. If you blog about all things that are movie-related, it will make it hard for you to build an audience for your new blog. 

Also, choosing a niche helps to make it more likely that you will be viewed as an expert or an authority in that niche. 

There are many different types of niches you can focus on with your blog. I’ve listed some of them below to give you inspiration and help you brainstorm additional ideas. 

• Choose a Movie Genre: Your blog can focus on any of the different movie genres, including horror, country, comedies, drama, thrillers, action, and so on. 
• Generalized Movie Blog: You can blog about movies in general, although I wouldn’t recommend this course of action as you will be taking on established blogs like ScreenRant right from the beginning. 
• Movie Blog Focused on Directors: An example of such a blog is Strictly Film School , which arguably embodies cinephilia in the internet age better than any other blog. 
• Asian or Foreign Films: Your niche can be focused on Asian movies, like the Asian movie blog MissMalini . 
• Indie Films: This is yet another niche that is extremely popular among movie bloggers. A great example of this type of blog is No Film School Blog . 
• Hollywood Blockbusters: If you choose this niche, your blog will focus on providing a thoughtful and analytical approach to the output from Hollywood. 
• Classic Hollywood Movie Blog: A classic movie blog will allow you to share news and information about classic movies, like the blog Out of the Past
• Retro Films: If you love retro films, you can dedicate your blog to the celebration of cinema retro. 
• Netflix Movie Review Blog: Your blog can be focused on reviewing Netflix movies specifically.

By now, I’m sure you’re getting the picture. The list of possible niches is virtually endless. You can also choose Experimental movies, Broadway, RomComs, Documentaries, etc. as your niche, or even combine different niches to come up with something unique. 

Just remember, the movie industry is extensive, so don’t try to be all things to all people with your new blog. Pick a niche that interests you and move on to the next step. You can always expand on it later.

The niche you choose will guide your content strategy. 

However, keep in mind that you can still write about different topics on your blog. For instance, The Movie Blog is clearly focused on writing about Hollywood films, but they still occasionally publish about Asian films, Indie films, and documentaries. 

The main focus of the film blog Screen Anarchy is Asian and Foreign films, but they also comment on bigger Hollywood films once in a while. 

Once you know your focus, you will be able to keep your direction clear. But, every now and then, you can allow yourself to talk about other things that interest you.

3. Choose Your Blogging Platform

Before you can start blogging , you need to have a blogging platform. This is the software that will allow your blog to be available online. 

There are many platforms to choose from, both free and paid, but I recommend that you steer clear of free blogging platforms like Blogger, Wix, and Squarespace. 

Although it may be tempting to start your new movie blog with no investment of money, below are some reasons why you should avoid this course of action.

Reasons to Avoid Free Blogging Platforms

• The features are quite limited and will limit your ability to grow and monetize your blog in the future. 
• You don’t have full control over your site, and any SEO work that you do will benefit the free blogging platform and not your own website. 
• Also, your site can be shut down with no prior notice if you violate their terms of use in any way. 
• Free blogging platforms look unprofessional. Instead of having a name like “ MyMovieBlog (dot) com ”, you’ll have to use something like “ MyMovieBlog.SquareSpace (dot) com ” 
• The host may show ads everywhere on your website – some of which may not even be related to the type of content you produce, which means you risk alienating your visitors.

Free blogging platforms do nothing to help you build trust in your relationships with your readers. After all, who would take your movie blog seriously if you can’t even be bothered to get your own hosting and domain? 

That’s why I recommend that you choose self-hosted WordPress as your blogging platform. (Keep in mind that this is different from the free WordPress (dot) com blogging platform).

Your domain name is what you’re going to call your new movie blog. For instance, if you name your blog Weird Horror Movies, then your domain name will be WeirdHorrorMovies (dot) com , or WeirdHorrorMovies (dot) net , etc. In short, the domain name will serve as your blog’s address online. 

You need to choose a name that is short, unique, catchy, and memorable. This way, you make it easy and convenient for your blog followers to type the name in their browsers when they want to return to your blog.

Listed below are 10 steps to help you choose a memorable name that is also brandable and aligned with your style. 

1. Go with “. com” : Although there are tons of other movie-related domain extensions, such as .movie, .film, etc., I recommend that you choose a domain name with a . com extension as this will help to build trust with your readers.

2. Choose a Broad Name: Try to avoid choosing a name that is too narrow. For instance, if you choose a name like “Fun Wedding Movies”, it limits the type of content you can create and makes it hard to grow and expand your blog over time. 

3. Keep It Short: Your name should be short and easy to type into the browser. So, avoid long or complex words and keep your movie blog name to just two or three words, if you can. If necessary, you can use up to four words, but try not to exceed that number.

4. Make Use of Alliteration: Alliteration is the use of two or more words that begin with the same sound or letter. Using this tactic helps to make your blog name more memorable, like Film Fans, Trailer Tyrant, or Movie Mania.

5. Get Creative: If the name you want for your new movie blog is already taken, you can use synonyms or other similar words to find a name you might be happy with. For instance, if you wanted the name “Awesome Action Movies”, you might consider using something like “ Epic Action Movies” instead.

6. Add Extra Words: If you’ve tried everything else and you still can’t get the name you want, try adding extra words like “the”, “blog”, “hub”, etc. You may also consider using keywords in your title. For instance, if your blog is focused on classic movies, you might choose a name like “ Classic Cinema Mania”.

7. Think of a Concept: Imagine how your movie blog could be branded, or how you might expand the blog in the future. This will help you come up with ideas for unique names for your blog.

8. Use Name Generating Tools: If all else fails and you find that you are still stuck for a name, use domain name generators like Lean Domain Search and Instant Domain Search . Simply enter some keywords, and the tool will present you with a list of possible domain names for your new movie blog.

9. Don’t Purchase a Domain Name: You may find that the name you want is already taken and being offered for sale for hundreds, or maybe even thousands of dollars. Don’t be tempted to buy it. 

Instead, go with a standard domain name and use that money to help you create valuable content to grow your site. Later on, when you’re blog is profitable, you can then purchase any domain name you want.

10. Don’t Get Stuck at This Stage: A lot of people who set out to start a new movie blog never make it past the stage. Picking a name is an important part of the process, but it shouldn’t take you longer than a couple of hours to get through the steps outlined above. Choose a name that you’re happy with, and move on to the next step.

• Back to the Movies : This is a memorable name for a blog about classic movies. It’s a play on the title of the popular sci-fi adventure film, Back to the Future.

5.  Buy Your Domain Name and Hosting

Your next step is to actually buy the domain and hosting for your website . If your domain name is your blog’s address, and your website is your movie blog’s actual home on the internet, then the hosting is the real estate on which the house will be built. 

You rent this real estate from web hosting providers. In return, they host your website on their servers and ensure that it’s always visible online for your audience to find. 

There are many web host providers that you can choose from. I recommend you use Bluehost, a reliable web host that has been around for a very long time that’s also recommended by WordPress. They offer affordable services for new bloggers.

So, when someone types in your website URL, then Bluehost will show your blog to the individual who searched for it.

Step 1:   If you haven’t yet, click on this link and you’ll be brought to the WordPress Hosting page that you see below. 

Step 2:   Next, you’ll be brought to the hosting plan page.  You could choose to get a “Plus” or “Choice Plus” plan, but honestly, that’s not a requirement.

The Startup plan is the cheapest at $2.95/month through my link vs. the normal $8.99/month.  

This plan has everything you need including 50GB of webspace (plenty of room for your files), a free domain for a year, plus other standard features like a free SSL and a secure WordPress install. Feel free to browse a bit to decide the right plan for you, but rest assured that Basic will work just fine if you want to minimize your investment.

Step 3:   After clicking into the plan, you’ll be brought to the next page where you will type-in your new domain, or you can just choose “I’ll create my domain later” if you haven’t decided on one yet. The domain is the URL people will type into a browser to view your website in the future. 

Step 4:   Once you submit, the next page will ask for all of your information. That will start with your account information, which is self-explanatory.

Step 5:  Next, you’ll have to input your Package Information. This is to choose how long you want the plan to go for. My advice is that you choose 24 months to get the discount and save some money, but you can go as low 12 months if you want.

Step 6:   Next you’ll have to choose what “Package Extras” you want. You can scroll over “More Information” to understand what each of these items are, but here is my own advice.

I would get the “Domain Privacy + Protection”, this makes it so that no one can tie your name to the domain name you create. To me, the only other one worth considering is “Codeguard Basic”. The other two I wouldn’t personally get. But choose what is best for you.

Step 7:  The next step is Payment Information, which is self-explanatory.

Step 8:  And the last step of signup is to confirm that you read and understand the Bluehost Terms of Service, Cancellation Policy, and Privacy Notice. Click the check button and then click “Submit”.

Step 9:   Next you’ll be prompted to create an account and password. This is the information that you’ll use to login to the Bluehost platform to manage your site and account info.

Step 10:   At this point Bluehost puts you through a short questionnaire to better understand your scenario. You can answer all of these questions, or click “Skip this Step” on the bottom. If you’re a newbie, I advise you to answer the questions as it’ll help your onboarding experience.

Step 11:   After you’re done with that you’ll be advised to choose a theme. For now, you can just choose to use a free theme. You can always replace the theme later if you’d like.

Step 12:   From there, you’ll be brought into the backend of WordPress in the admin panel. This is where you’ll manage your site from. You can add posts/pages as you see fit, but when you’re ready click on the blue button that says “Launch Your Site”.

Step 13 (Final) :  Your blog is LIVE.  Just go to a browser and type in your domain name.  Once you do this, you’ll be able to access your website!

Congrats!  You officially have a website.

There are tons of WordPress themes to choose from, including free themes and premium themes. I would advise against using a free theme because they are hard to customize and your new blog will end up looking like thousands of other movie blogs online. 

If you want a blog that stands out, you’re better off choosing one of the many premium WordPress movie themes available.

It should be noted that there are also website builders for filmmakers out there, but if you’re looking simply to discuss films and have a blog focused on movies, this probably isn’t for you.

7.  Create Essential Pages  & Logo

This step involves creating your blog’s essential pages. These are the main pages that will help you build trust with your audience, and so it’s important to take the time to ensure that you craft the content well.

These pages include the About page, Contact page, and Privacy Policy page. Let’s take a look at each of them in a bit more detail:

About Page: On some movie blogs, you may see this page titled “My Story”. This page is where you share information about yourself, why you started a movie blog, and so on. 

The people that follow your blog want to get to know you, and people love good stories, so use this page as a means to connect with your new audience and give them an idea of the type of value they can expect from your blog. You can also include an image of yourself on this page.

Contact Page: If any of your readers need help or want to collaborate with you, they should have an easy way to reach you. You can use the Contact Form 7 plugin on your WordPress blog to create a professional-looking contact form for this page.

The purpose of a privacy policy is to inform your blog visitors about your process for the collection and use of their personal data. In addition to the Privacy Policy page, you may also include other legal pages, such as a Copyright page where you can explain that the content on your movie blog is fully yours and that you don’t want any of your content to be used without your consent.

Create a Logo: It’s also a good time to focus on creating a logo for your movie blog. There are a LOT of different ways to do this, but I’m a big fan of using using a logo maker .

You have to regularly publish new content in order to build a targeted audience for your movie blog. Without an audience, you will not be able to make your blog a success, let alone monetize it. Content will also play a huge role in helping you become a “pro” in the movie review industry.

The type of content you create can include: 

• Evergreen Articles: These have a long shelf life. They will continue to draw readers to your movie blog for a long time.
• Videos: The explosive growth of video-sharing sites like YouTube and video-based tech like TikTok offers a ton of opportunities for video content creators to connect with a global audience.
• News-Type Articles: We’ve established that as a movie blogger, you are not a news journalist. However, you can publish news-type articles or any other announcement-type content on your blog.
• Image Heavy Content: More and more people are choosing videos and image-based content over written text on blogs. You can make your blog more appealing to different segments of your audience by including lots of eye-catching imagery in your posts.
• Mix-And-Match: If you want your blog to stay fresh, you need to publish a variety of content. You will obviously have your popular posts that resonate the most with your audience, but it’s also important to provide a variety of content so you can cater to a wider audience.

Just keep in mind that just because you have to publish regularly doesn’t mean that you should regularly publish low-quality content. 

You must choose a blog posting frequency that allows you to consistently create high-quality content that resonates with your target audience. 

But what exactly should you write about?

Just because it’s cheap to start a movie blog, and anyone can do it, it doesn’t mean that everyone will succeed. One of the most popular posts on my blog is my 32 Blog Post Ideas for Book Bloggers (it ranks #1 on Google , which I’m pretty proud of!). People are still regularly coming back to that post for their dose of bookish inspiration. So, considering this blog is turning into a film blog as well as a book blog, I thought I’d share a list of blog post ideas for film bloggers .

Feel free to use these ideas how you wish – exactly how they are, adapted to suit you, or however you’d like to use them. A few of these ideas might overlap from my book blog ideas post, but they’re suitable for both niches so I thought I’d include them on both.

Reviews & Discussion Posts for Film Bloggers

Film reviews.

This is the obvious choice and pretty much all film bloggers do them, but you can think about how to do them creatively! Split it into sections, come up with a cool rating system, share your thoughts in the form of an elaborate acrostic poem… the choice is yours.

And don’t worry about it being too long! Quite often, I’ll go and see a film that sparks a lot of feelings. Either I love it and I want to pour my heart out, or I disliked it and I need to get out my (maybe unpopular) opinions.

For example, I recently wrote a slightly less-than-glowing review of The Greatest Showman that ended up being over 3000 words. If you’ve got a lot of feelings, don’t be afraid to pour all of your thoughts into an essay-length review!

Review a film streaming service

If you’ve started a new subscription to a streaming service, like Netflix, Now TV, or Disney+, write about your thoughts. Is it how you expected? What’s the choice of films like – is there a vast array or a disappointing selection? Compare the pricing plans, the diversity of the selection available, or anything else that you think might be useful for people reading.

Remember that if people are reading your review, they’ll probably be genuinely interested in the platform – so make sure to include all the information they’ll need!

10 thoughts while watching…

While you watch a film, do you thoughts change throughout? If you hate it at the start but grow to love it, or your opinion changes about a particular character, it could be entertaining to log your thought process. This method is also a great way to review a film without having to write a traditional review. If you’re stuck on what to write, this could be good way to get your brain working and help realise your thoughts.

Discuss your favourite/least favourite genres

Is there one genre you always find yourself dying to see, or yawning at the thought of it? Why do you love or hate them? You could write this in list form, or go more in depth and discuss the pros and cons of each genre. You could also share a list of your favourite films within these genres.

Plus, if you’re an affiliate for anything like Amazon, this could be a great chance to include affiliate links for people to buy the films you mention!

Book vs. film

Book-to-screen adaptations are huge, especially in the past few years. You might want to write about your favourite (or least favourite) adaptations. Did you hate the Harry Potter films? Did you think the Hunger Games series so much better than the books? Have your say! You could also discuss which books you wish were turned into films (or TV shows).

Talk about representation

Do you love (or hate) the way a certain minority is represented in films? Write about it and share specific examples. Some ideas are sexuality, race, gender, or anything else you feel strongly about.

Discuss how you would improve a film

If there’s a film you saw that you liked but it could have been better, pinpoint exactly what could have been better. Maybe you’d recast some of the roles, or change the style or cinematography, or cut some unnecessary moments. Whatever it might be, put yourself in the director’s shoes and explain what you would have done differently.

List Posts for Film Bloggers

Your favourite actors/actresses.

Write about your favourite actors and actresses and the films that they star in. Do you think there are particular high points in their careers so far, or can you admit that they’ve starred in a few flops? Maybe also write about the films you can imagine them starring in – for example, would you want them to star in an adaptation of your favourite book?

Your favourite directors

What have they directed? What do you love about them? Include their film styles, their artistic direction, or anything you particular love about them. If you have time on your hands, you could also make a list ranking all of the films that you’ve seen in order from best to worst, or favourite to least favourite.

Top 5 film flops

Rank the worst films you’ve ever seen. We’ve all been to see a film and finished it feeling bitterly disappointed, haven’t we?! Or maybe you want to do a bit of research and write about box office flops and your true opinions on them.

Film-related gifts

There are so many cool gifts out there for film buffs, like fake clapper boards, camera lens drinking cups, and more. Put together a gift guide for film lovers! As I mentioned above, this could be another great chance to use affiliate links.

The best and worst remakes/spin-offs/sequels

Often, film studios like to capitalise on the success of popular films by remaking them, creating spin-offs, or writing (sometimes awful) sequels. What are your thoughts about these? List your favourites or least favourites. What are ingredients or must-haves for a good remake/spin-off/sequel? What do you think makes or breaks them?

Awards show predictions/reactions

I love to watch the Oscars every year and make predictions about the winners beforehand. This year, I predicted 20 of the 24 categories, and I was correct on 16 of them. Not bad! Share your predictions, and then your reactions to the actual winners.

Personal & Update Posts for Film Bloggers

Take us on a tour of your dvd collection.

(Or your digital collection if physical DVDs are toootally a thing of the past.) You could even get a bit deeper and analyse your collection in more detail. Do you own a lot by the same director, do the same people appear in a lot of them, or are they mostly one particular genre? What films do you have on your wishlist?

Have you bought any DVDs or Blu-rays recently? Share what you’ve bought, why you bought them, and if you’ve seen them before. Were they a random choice, or a favourite that you didn’t already own?

Share your unpopular opinions

Most people are likely to have at least one opinion that a lot of people will disagree with. Be brave and share some of yours. This could be a great way to encourage engagement on your post – do other people agree or disagree with your unpopular opinions? You might realise they’re not so unpopular after all…

Why do you choose to see a film?

I always like to read the synopsis and watch the trailer before I go and see a film, and the genre is a big decider for me too. Another big draw for me is if it stars an actor I love or if it’s directed by one of my favourite directors. For me, I will always go and see a film in the cinema ASAP if it’s Pixar, or if it’s directed by Wes Anderson. How about you? What makes you decide to go and see a film?

Write about an event you went to

Have you been to any film-related events? Whether you want to a film festival or you were lucky enough to attend a major film premiere, write about your day and what you loved about it! Did you see a film you adored? Did you meet anyone worthy enough to make everyone else jealous?

Informal, chatty posts

Got something you want to get off your chest? Maybe a rant about something going on in the film industry or a ramble about how much you loved a film (which I pretty much did for The Shape of Water )? Just open up a new post and write your feelings.

Badly-written film plots

Play a little game with your readers: write out a few awfully-written plots of popular films and see if they can guess what they are. For example, “a kid goes to a special school where he has to defeat a mean snake-obsessed guy called Tom with magical powers.”

Your fictional bucket list

Do you want to have lunch with Harry Potter? Be best friends with a Disney Princess? Step into your wardrobe and find yourself in Narnia? Put together your fictional bucket list!

Your favourite alternative movie artwork

Has anyone impressed you by designing unofficial alternative artwork for one of your favourite films? I love it when people create minimalist posters for films and I want them all on my wall. (I recently bought stunning posters of The Martian and WALL.E, two of my all-time favourite films.) Share a few links to ones you love! (Another chance to use affiliate links!)

This idea is courtesy of my friend Sarah from The Little Contemporary Corner . I saw this and thought it was a great idea for a post, for both book and film bloggers! How To Choose A Good Blog Name

To begin with, think about your site. What do you plan to talk about? For example, is your entire site going to focus on book reviews, like the site amazonbookreview.com ?

Or, are you also going to talk about other aspects of literature? If so, you might want a broader site name, which is you see with the sites bookriot.com and totallybookedblog.com .

What about yourself? Are you an expert in the field? Is there something unusual about you that is worth highlighting?

Here’s another angle – the genre. Are you talking about new books? Classics? Mysteries? Fiction? Nonfiction? Some sites use this in their blog name, like bookhoundsya.net , which focuses on Young Adult books.

You don’t need to mention any of these areas in your blog name, but the questions are fantastic for brainstorming.

Another trick is to use domain name tools to help in your search. Many of these offer ideas, while also showing you the domain names that are available. My favorite is domainwheel.com , but there is no shortage of others.

Before you get too far in the searching process, we also need to talk about the areas that you should be aware of.

The first of these is a lack of originality. This doesn’t just mean you need to avoid brands that are already taken. You also need to make yourself distinct from other sites. This is critical for getting noticed online.

Another area is the words that you include in your blog name. Whenever possible, try to avoid words that are likely to be confusing or difficult to remember.

For example, if a word has multiple spellings, your audience will need to remember how to spell the word. Likewise, numbers may be included as numerals or written out as words.

Once you get past the initial blog name search, the next step is actually buying a domain name. This is done through a domain name registrar, like GoDaddy, Namecheap or domains.com.

You’ll even find that most hosting companies sell domain names, while many other sites recommend particular services. The number of options can make the field pretty confusing.

Most services will work just fine. I recommend looking for ones that are easy to use and are up-front about their pricing. Make sure you know how much you’ll be paying each year, along with what you get for that money. My personal preference is Namecheap .

How To Build & Make Money From Your Book Review Website

There are plenty of options for building your website too. This time, the choice that you make is highly significant.

First of all, you need to decide if you want to go with a website builder or a self-hosted WordPress site. A website builder is something like Wix or Weebly , where you are using some type of tool to create your website.

The services will often use a visual editor, which might allow you to drag and drop elements into place. Website builders are often appealing. They make the website building process feel very easy, even if you have no previous experience at all.

A self-hosted WordPress site is a bit different. You get to choose the host that you sign up with and the underlying system for building remains roughly the same either way. This means that you can transfer from one host to another – something that isn’t possible when you’re using a website builder.

The tricky thing is that you generally have to set up a WordPress site yourself. This can seem a bit confusing at first (which may be why people turn to website builders).

The site Hooked to Books is a fantastic example of making money in the book review niche. The site talks about books, writing, reading and related gadgets. It’s seriously worth checking out.

Their income report from December 2018 highlighted a total revenue of $5.440.35. More than $4,600 of this income came from affiliate sales, while the rest was from display ads via Mediavine.

A second interesting site is Expand Beyond Yourself. This site focuses on a variety of areas, including books and self-improvement.

The income report from August 2019 showed a total income of $2,142 for the month. The site did actually earn considerably more than this (around $3,000 in Amazon sales alone), but expenses were also high.

Display Ads

Display ads can be viewed as a relatively passive way to make money. This is because most of the work is in setting the ads up. You might optimize them a little too, but you don’t need to constantly tweak your ads.

You do need to create content regularly, but this is something that you should be doing with a book review site regardless.

The most useful feature of display ads is that you don’t need to write about any specific products or run promotions. You get to write the content you want to, and the ads display automatically. This type of monetization is very popular with gossip blogs , which don’t have a lot of products you can directly promote to your audience.

The style is perfect if you don’t want to be making sales pitches. For example, if part of your site talked about famous authors, you might not want to promote a product at the same time. Display ads provide you with the chance to still earn from your content.

Still, display ads have their limitations.
