Leadership takes on many dimensions and encompasses many definitions.  

Organizations of all kinds focus on leadership as a vital concept necessary for success. Everyone talks about leadership, everyone says they want leadership, everyone prioritizes leadership.  

But,  why  is leadership important? And why is leadership important in business?  

“Leadership listens, inspires, motivates, and gives a direction, a common goal to aspire to,” says Finance Professor  Jerome Taillard , who also is the first recipient of the Professor George Troughton Term Chair in Finance at Babson College.  

Leadership comes in many forms and constructs, including transformational leadership, servant leadership, and  entrepreneurial leadership , which helps to understand and define leadership itself. So says Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior  Scott Taylor , the Arthur M. Blank Endowed Chair for Values-Based Leadership at Babson College’s  Arthur M. Blank School for Entrepreneurial Leadership .  

“I rarely speak of a leader as simply someone who holds a position of authority,” Taylor says. Instead, he’s focused on the sustainability of influence over time and how that occurs. True leaders, he says, are able to maintain power and influence because they genuinely are supported by willing followers.  

Leadership, especially entrepreneurial leadership, is increasingly in demand as weighty, global issues require entrepreneurial leaders to seek creative solutions and harness the power of people to reach common goals. Great leadership provides a unified vision for an organization to collaboratively achieve company-wide goals.  

The key for positive results of that influence and those followers, though, is the purpose of their objectives and how the leader pursues them. And, that helps distinguish great leadership, according to Marjorie N. Feld , Babson professor of history.  

Why Is Leadership Important in Business?

Within an organization strong leadership is important in shaping a cohesive vision and cultivating a sense of the greater good for the organization. Strong business leaders establish a tone while motivating and inspiring others through trust and purpose so that everyone within the organization is rowing together to achieve a common goal.  

Additionally, leaders must be adaptable. Not everything can be planned and it’s those moments when good leaders can showcase their strength to their team.    

“Good leadership is defined by modeling ethics and inclusiveness,” Feld says. “Guided by a strong moral compass, leaders must be open to every learning opportunity.” Those opportunities could be when facing a public health crisis or accommodating a student whose needs differ from most others. Good leaders, she says, support and advance justice, and stay this course even when tested.

Why Leadership Skills Are Important

Leaders provide inspiration and organizational guidance for broader teams. Leadership skills are important for many reasons including:  

  • Improving team morale  
  • Improving Company Culture and Working Environments  
  • Enabling Innovation  
  • Inspiring Confidence and Growth  
  • Enhancing Communication and Resolving Potential Conflicts  

Leadership can come naturally, but it’s not necessarily innate. Leadership can be learned through  leadership development programs , where leadership skills are created, developed, and improved through rigorous education and practice. Those skills can highlight the importance of a leader in an organization. “Leadership is often associated with top management, but leadership can occur anywhere,” Taillard says, citing good teachers and good students as exhibiting leadership skills. “It is taking initiative, it is showing interest, it is pursuing a mission to serve a greater purpose, or greater good.”  

And, while leadership isn’t limited to the C-Suite, it’s hard to overstate the importance of a leader in an organization.  

Understanding  the entrepreneurial leadership mindset  and honing necessary leadership skills are all important to  becoming an entrepreneurial leader , able to identify, address, and help solve complex problems with empathy.  

“All entrepreneurial leaders are good opportunistic problem solvers,” says  Jay Rao , Babson professor of operations management. He says entrepreneurial leaders are good risk managers, good at scenario planning, and prepare for eventualities and crises. “When there is great external turbulence and chaos, entrepreneurial leaders provide an island of certainty and calm for their employees and/or citizens.”  

How to Show Leadership

A great leader is one that can demonstrate strong leadership not solely through verbal communication. There are several techniques to show strong leadership to your team including:  

  • Listen intently and learn from what you are hearing  
  • Empower your team with positive reinforcement and coaching  
  • Become an expert at your role  

Leadership can manifest itself in many ways. But, the role of a good leader is to focus on positive solutions, says Babson Professor of Management  Nan Langowitz , the faculty director at the Center for Engaged Learning and Teaching.  

“We often hear advice to ‘lead by example,’ but it’s essential to ask what that example should be,” Langowitz says. “In today’s social media world of ‘brand me,’ leadership needs to remain focused on creating positive solutions that create true economic and social value. It’s the solution that should matter, not the leader.  

“A true sign of leadership is the organization’s or team’s ability for consistent high performance, even when the original leader has moved on,” she continues. “If there has truly been an investment in the people and purpose of the team, they should be well equipped to carry on successfully. In organizations, these skills and approaches become embedded in high-performance culture, but leaders need to set and reinforce the positive tone.”  

Why Effective Leadership Is Important

Strongly effective leaders are often identified as great communicators who display empathy and emotional intelligence along with the integrity to stand up for what is right. They balance those traits with confidence and self-awareness which helps them stay focused and prevent egos from getting in the way.  

With those kinds of effective leaders, nothing is impossible, according to Taillard. Ultimately, that answers weighty questions such as, “Why is leadership important?” And, “ Why is integrity important to leadership? ”  

“With good leadership, you can create a vision and can motivate people to make it a reality,” Taillard says. “A good leader can inspire everyone in an organization to achieve their very best. Human capital is THE differentiator in this knowledge-based economy that we live in. So, leadership needs to attract, inspire, and ultimately retain as much talent as possible.  

“If you inspire people, if you can create the right conditions, you can get much more out of people, and achieve wonders.”

Besides, such a leader will most likely have a positive influence on the team, as long as leading by example will motivate the team members to attain the same emotional stability. What is so far familiar about stress resistance as an effective leader’s feature is that it can be either innate or attained. However, although some researchers admit that emotional stability is something one is born with, it is not entirely true; many people still put a great effort into self-improvement, changing the attitude to unfortunate situations, and so on. Therefore, being resistant to stress can be mostly attributed to a personality.

An ability to make high-quality decisions most likely determines the chances for an enterprise’s success. In particular, such quality is incredibly fundamental for a company of any size and professional orientation. Additionally, it is one of the top tasks of a good leader to make final decisions. What he or she should do implies brainstorming, discussing various opinions in the group, making forecasts, analyzing all the pros and cons. However, the leader is the one to make a final decision. It is a well known fact that leading change is a difficult task. Let us take for example, the situation in the modern organizations, it is common to here leaders talk about employees who are always resisting any new changes. On the other hand the employees talk mainly about the changes as a mistake or a blunder. These are common talks among the leaders and employees in their respective circle and make it obvious that change is occurring in most of our organizations. Kotter (1996) states that “ The rate of change is not going to slow down any time soon…[it] will probably speed up even more…change is inevitable and to resist is at best unproductive…the key is in your response to change ”.

In the 21 st century the most of the organizations are undergoing substantial changes. The terms such as privatization and “downsizing” have become a common in the public sector. While these processes continue in most parts of the world, in recent years this sector has a desire to improve its capabilities. As a result these sectors have taken up capacity building, or institutional or sectoral development. However, this has resulted in significant changes to, and within, individual organizations.

New sets of organizational forms have emerged. Besides, new managerial processes are linked with human resource management or management information systems (CeFiMS, N.D.). Hence, today it has become an important task to manage the change in corporate sector. This paper discusses the issues related to managing change in corporate sector and its impact.

Corporate managers in the organizations are often required to initiate major change or transformation in their agencies (Kee and Davis, 2006). Hence these managers are often required to possess a unique leadership called the “change leadership”. This concept of leadership is different from the normal leadership or management of a corporate agency. They need to carefully assess the risk and rewards, and a skill to manage risk in a way that protects the leader, the agency, and other stakeholders.

There are several influences on corporate managers that demand change leadership. Corporate managers at different levels of government are under pressure to be more performance oriented. This includes various performance-based approaches such as performance-based budgeting, the federal Government Performance and Results Act, and a variety of pay for performance plans. To encourage competence and improve effectiveness, corporate managers need to be competitive and entrepreneurial, including efforts at contracting-out, competitive sourcing, and various public-private partnerships.

Government officials need to quickly respond to changing demands brought about by globalization, new threats, such as terrorism, and uncertain events, such as Hurricane Katrina. One of the common factors in all of the above factors is the need for agencies to change themselves which is not easy. Though potential rewards may be good enough, change carries risks for the agency, the manager, and other stakeholders.

In contrast to private sector, public sector leaders have considerably more stakeholders. They include those within the organization, such as the trade unions, and those outside the organization, such as political leadership, suppliers, citizens/consumers and others. The most important aspect of change in corporate sector is that it must be transparent, involves extensive consultation, and is generally conducted in a highly visible arena. While changes are inevitable in the corporate sector just as in private sectors, it brings along with it several risks.

Kee and Davis (2006) identified and classified these risks. Change-related risk is a function of three factors: the level of complexity of the change being undertaken; the type and degree of individual’s and/or organization’s perception of their stake (their potential gain or loss) in the change outcome and the change capability of an individual and/or organization. These factors represent the level of risk involved in any given change in a corporate sector.

High-risk changes involve greater chances that the change process or the outcome will may be negative with unacceptable consequences where as low-risk changes involve lesser chances that the change process or outcome will involve such consequences. By assessing risk in this manner, a manager’s change leadership efforts most probably fall in optimal action. On the other hand the efforts by the manager or a supervisor that occur without the knowledge of change risk factors are much more unpredictable and potentially counterproductive. For instance, pushing for too much change, too fast, could be risky for both the corporate manager and the organization itself. Besides, pushing too slowly may also be dangerous—organizations may miss major opportunities or be viewed as unmanageable and ineffective (Kee and Setzer, 2006).

The use of quality management has become widespread among public and private sector organizations. In today’s world of global competition and increasing demand by customers it becomes very essential for organizations to produce quality service. Though the aims of business may differ, but the basic concept of satisfying the customer remains same. Corporate sectors are implementing several programs designed for continuous improvement, participative management, and self-directed work teams which in turn seek to energize employees by making them a more integral part of the workplace.

During the past few decades, quality management has emerged as a major competitive edge in business and a source of long term profitability. Different techniques and concepts have evolved to improve product or service quality, including Zero Defects, Six Sigma, quality circles, TQM, Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001 and others) and continuous improvement. Essentially, it means setting up systems and processes that ensure product or service quality and that people are rewarded for doing the right thing, thus keeping their highest-quality performance strong and accurate. This paper attempts to compare, contrast and analyze two such techniques i.e. Six Sigma and Total Quality Management.

Bill Smith, a senior engineer and scientist at Motorola in the year 1986 introduced the concept of Six Sigma (Quinn, 2002). The main purpose was to standardize the way defects are counted. Six Sigma provided Motorola the key to addressing quality concerns throughout the organization, from manufacturing to support functions. The application of Six Sigma also contributed to Motorola winning the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality award in 1988 (Motorola University, 1994). Six Sigma not only improved Motorola’s products and processes, it also saved the company more than US $15 billion in the 10 years after it began the program (Microsoft Office System, Operation Agenda, N.D.).

Six Sigma is not a quality management system, such as ISO-9001, or a quality certification system. Instead it is a methodology for reducing defects based on process improvement. Six Sigma is a methodology to manage process variations that cause defects, defined as unacceptable deviation from the mean or target; and to systematically work towards managing variation to eliminate those defects. The objective of Six Sigma is to deliver high performance, reliability, and value to the end customer 1 .

Six Sigma is a statistically-based process improvement methodology that aims to reduce defects to a rate of 3.4 defects per million defect opportunities by identifying and eliminating causes of variation in business processes. In defining defects, Six Sigma focuses on developing a very clear understanding of customer requirements and is therefore very customer focused. The Six Sigma methodology is based on a concept called DMAIC: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control the framework that provides a stronger platform for deployment and execution (Mekong Capital, 2004).

TQM is a set of management practices throughout the organization, geared to ensure the organization consistently meets or exceeds customer requirements. This is also applicable to public sector organizations. TQM places strong focus on process measurement and controls as means of continuous improvement. Total Quality Management is an approach to the art of management that originated in Japanese industry in the 1950’s and has become steadily more popular in the West since the early 1980’s 2 .

According to Dale et.al. (2001) TQM is described as an umbrella of concepts and ideas in various fields related to quality management. It involves the mutual cooperation of every one in an organization in order to produce products and services which meet and even exceeds customers expectation (Dale, 1999). Total Quality is a description of the culture, attitude and organization of a company that has an objective to provide, its customers with products and services that satisfy their needs. The culture requires quality in all aspects of the company’s operations, with things being done right first time, and defects and waste eliminated from operations.

Studies found that several companies have difficulties in implementing TQM. Surveys by consulting firms have found that only 20-36% of companies that have undertaken TQM have achieved either significant or even tangible improvements in quality, productivity, competitiveness or financial return. Hence if TQM is used as a management tool in the corporate sector, it can be very useful to bring about changes in a positive direction. Important aspects of TQM include customer-driven quality, top management leadership and commitment, continuous improvement, fast response, actions based on facts, employee participation, and a TQM culture.

TQM is a customer oriented management technology. The customer, not internal activities and constraints, comes first. Customer satisfaction is seen as the company’s highest priority. The TQM Company is responsive to customer requirements and responds quickly to them. In the TQM context, ‘being sensitive to customer requirements’ goes beyond defect and error reduction, and merely meeting specifications or reducing customer complaints. The concept of requirements is expanded to take in not only product and service attributes that meet basic requirements, but also those that enhance and differentiate them for competitive advantage 2 .

Many researchers have found that in spite of any theory of employee motivation, the high motivation among them invariably depends on interesting work, pay, good working conditions, appreciation that they receive from their superiors, and job security. These factors are important factors in helping to motivate employee even in the corporate sectors (BPIR.com, 2002). When we look at the advantages of employee it can be pointed out that motivational and inspirational experiences in their organizational life improve employees’ attitudes, confidence and performance. Managers and leaders in the corporate sectors are expected to have exceptionally good leadership qualities and good people-motivation skills and inspirational techniques that will help to improve total productivity.

There are several motivational methods. It may range from inspirational quotes and poems, to team building games and activities, warm-ups and exercises for conferences, workshops, meetings and events, which itself can often be helpful for motivation of most of the employees. According to the McGregor’s XY Theory of motivation, motivated people perform better. Douglas McGregor who was an American social psychologist, in his 1960 book ‘The Human Side of Enterprise’ proposed the famous X-Y theory.

Theory x and theory y are even today referred to in the field of management and motivation. McGregor’s X-Y Theory remains a valid basic principle from which to develop positive management style and techniques. Hence it is important for all the managers in the corporate sectors to follow some of the basic principles of this theory because McGregor’s XY Theory still remains central to organizational development, and to improving organizational culture.

This theory is a simple reminder of the natural rules for managing people, which under the pressure of day-to-day work are easily forgotten. According to McGregor there are two fundamental approaches to managing people. In general it is found that many managers follow theory x, and sometimes get poor results. Other managers use theory y, which produces better performance and results, and allows people to grow and develop (businessballs.com, 2006).

Motivation is a complex area and it is different for each person. It is important to get the alignment and values right, and motivational methods work better. Motivational methods of any sort will not work if people and organisation are not properly aligned. People are motivated for something if they can relate to and something they can believe in (businessballs.com, 2006). Today the challenges faced by the corporate sectors are quite different from the olden times. People are expecting more in terms of opportunity, income, facilities etc. In terms of the role played by managers and leaders it is quite different and it is important to differentiate between them.

According to Bernard Bass “ Leaders manage and managers lead, but the two activities are not synonymous…. Management functions can potentially provide leadership; leadership activities can contribute to managing. Nevertheless, some managers do not lead, and some leaders do not manage ” (Bass and Stogdill, 1990).

Although managers and leaders functions and roles overlap in the corporate sectors considerably, the term manager connotes that authority has been formally granted to an individual by an organization. Management involves power legitimate formal authority that is granted to the occupant of a position by a higher organizational authority.

The Goleman (2002) study of 4000 executives highlighted that the fundamental task of leaders is to ‘prime good feeling ‘ in those they lead and this positivity impacts significantly on an organisation’s emotional climate and brings out the best in people. His research indicates that a leader’s emotional states and actions do affect how the people they lead will feel and therefore perform. In other words the leader is the one who manages meaning for a group and acts as the group’s emotional guide.

Responsibility and accountability for the use of organizational resources accompany the power accorded to a manager or director. In contrast, the term leader implies effective use of influence that is somewhat independent of the formal authority granted to an individual because of position. Leadership cannot be granted to a person by a higher authority; rather, those who decide to follow bestow it on an individual. While managers have formal authority, leaders have the informal ability to get things done by attracting and influencing followers. Effective managers in any corporate sector must be leaders, and many leaders become managers, leaders, and directors. The two sets of roles and functions, however, differ (Steven, 2001).

Traditionally managements the term “management” refers to the activities involved in the four general functions i.e. planning, organizing resources, leading a group of people, and controlling and coordinating the organizations system. One of the common views of management is getting things done by a group of individual. To most employees, the term “management” probably means the group of people who are mainly responsible for making decisions in the organization (McNamara, 1999).

In any corporate sector, different levels of managers are present they include top managers, middle managers and first-line managers. Top managers are responsible for overseeing the whole organization and typically engage in more strategic and conceptual matters, with less attention to day-to-day detail. Top managers have middle managers working for them and who are in charge of a major function or department. Middle managers may have first-line managers working for them and who are responsible to manage the day-to-day activities of a group of workers (McNamara, 1999).

Managers also require well developed interpersonal skills relating to working with others, with the component abilities encompassing everything concerned with managing and leading people. Katz (1974) despite classifying all three categories as ‘skills’, heralded the importance of distinguishing between the learnable technical skills of management versus the more abstract personal characteristics found in his ‘human’ and ‘conceptual’ skill categories.

Managers and leaders in a public sector organization have specific roles to play when it comes to motivating employees. While managers motivate by providing guidelines, encouragement and appreciation, leaders walk the talk and work along with the employees to spread their motivation to others. Therefore both these people are very important for any organization for its success.

Leadership has become an urgent issue in most of the corporate sector as a consequence of rapidity and unpredictability of change. Corporate sector have to be more well-organized, more efficient, more innovative and, in the case of business, far more competitive. Above all the workforce is changing. Today employees demand respect, fair treatment and an opportunity to contribute. And if they are denied of these they look out for other options and quit the organizations (The Conference Board of Canada, N.D.).

Organizational behavior is a field of study that is of particular importance to enterprises and those in management positions. One of the major issues that corporate sector firms have to deal with is the problem of motivation. Motivation is the power that makes us do things. This comes from the result of personal needs being fulfilled so that one has encouragement to complete the assignment or the assigned work. The needs vary from person to person as everyone has his/her individual needs to motivate themselves. One may think that motivation for an employ is higher salary, mostly it is wrong because of the reason that it might not satisfy all employees to a lasting level (bizhelp24.com, 2005).

Psychological research has discovered the following positive personality variables associated with strong leadership that includes warmth, friendliness, self-confidence, ability to stand up to pressure. These researches have also found that the absence of the negative qualities of arrogance, hostility, boastfulness, egotism, and passivity are correlated with positive leadership (Romney, 1996). Building a strong leadership is all about building a performing team in corporate sectors.

Organization wide change requires dealing with the sources and uses of governance, diffusion and reluctance to rethink what the strategy and purpose. The diversity of forces represented by different challenges requires a diversity of leaders. A coordinated effort from the local line leaders, internal networkers and executive leaders are vital in any corporate sector for influencing the overall environment within which innovations and learning occurs (Senge, 1999).

People around the world today are seeking to understand the concept and practices of leadership. There are several reasons for the popularity of this topic, including that corporate sector is faced with changes like never before. The concept of leadership is applicable to any aspect of ensuring effectiveness in corporate sector and in managing change. Managing demands a new type of leadership in today’s multifaceted place of work especially in the corporate sectors.

Hence it is essential that the 21 st century managers must lead as visionaries and entrepreneurs, mentors and role model for change, team builders and servant-followers. To succeed, they must be aggressive in this competitive world, improve customer service, nurture a diverse workplace and meet unprecedented global, ethical, and business challenges. Organizational success depends on developing and using the leadership skills that move corporate sector and people forward toward common goals and objectives.

Organizations undergoing rapid change need to keep the organization structure flexible. Good organizational leadership requires committed “ego-less” leadership from the executive suite down to the employee level and an organizational culture that encourages and rewards this behavior is very essential for growth and positive change. Each and every organization requires leadership and management because all of them are affected by their contexts, philosophies, governance structures, value systems, and the legal ground rules under which they operate. These are the forces and factors that control their leadership and management needs.

Over the years, the significance ascribed to the roles, functions, and traits of leaders has led many to ask a common question as to what makes an effective leader and why? Many of the social and behavioral scientists have tried to offer answers to this question. Leadership, however, is a surprisingly complex and elusive concept that requires in-depth understanding and explanation.

In order to design a successful strategy of change it is important for the leaders and managers to become expert at analyzing and finding out the forces pressing for change and the resistances among the employee group to change. Change can be of any small or large issue. It might be either focused on a few individuals, or a group or the entire organization or it can also be one or more aspects of the organization’s setup. For instance, if the company facing an immediate threat to its survival due to competition, it is important that leaders and managers of that organization get together to plan effectively and diagnose the external and internal forces that threaten the company’s survival due to competition. Then they must assess and implement strategies for fighting these forces.

It is essential for leaders who manage change in an organization to focus attention, specifically, on resistances to change–both organizationally and those of individuals within the organization. Since it is a well known fact and a general argument that when confronted by rapid change, people in an organization get frustrated, freeze up, get rigid and rebel against the changes in one way or the other. Leaders and managers must be equipped at addressing the inevitable resistance of staff to a change. If we look at the subject of change management it mainly deals with the most effective way to make needed changes to identify existing resistances to change and to focus efforts on removing or reducing as many as possible.

Leadership may be defined as a position of power held by an individual in a group, which provides him with an opportunity to exercise interpersonal influence on the group members for miobilising and directing their efforts towards certain goals. The leader is at the centre of group’s power structure, keeps the group together, infuses life into it, moves it towards its goals and maintains its momentum.

He may emerge in a group by virtue of his personality characteristics and qualities or by virtue of common consent by group members. In the latter case, the leader derives his power from the group members. He continues in the leadership position at the pleasure of group members collectively. Leadership position exists in most group settings irrespective of the size of the group.

For example, a leader of national or international standing commands widespread influence over a large number of people while the influence of the leader of a small work group in an organisation is very limited. Both are leaders in their own right and fulfill our definition of leadership.

Leadership is an influential process. The leader is in a position to shape, regulate, control and change the attitudes, behaviour and performance of his group members. The latter are supposed to comply with the former’s desires and directives and partially suspend their own judgment and discretion. There exists a particular relationship between the leader and his group members which is characterised by interpersonal and social interaction.

In a group, the leader and his followers play the roles expected of them and thereby seek to justify their respective positions. Some leaders may be able to play their role effectively whereby they succeed in getting the willing cooperation and commitment of their followers, beyond the normal call of duty.

In any group situation, the leader has a few bases of power by virtue of which he is in a position to influence the behaviour of group members. They are:

(i) Knowledge, information and experience

(ii) Resources for dispensing favours, rewards and penalties

(iii) Formal authority

(iv) Charisma

(v) Distinct personality characteristics like for example, will to dominate, ability to establish rapport, skill to communicate, identity with and understanding of people, decisiveness and soon.

Skillful use of these power bases by a leader is likely to bring success to him; and success in some cases adds to the power of the leader. A successful leader gains more credibility in the eyes of people; they often tend to ignore other deficiencies in him; they resolve to adhere to him and allow themselves to be further exposed to his influence attempts.

In this way some leaders entrench themselves in their positions. Some even misuse their power and often get away with it. Power carries with it an equal amount of responsibility. Leaders who relate their power with responsibility in a consistent manner are more successful in their influence than otherwise.

Importance of Leadership:

The following points highlight the importance of leadership:

(i) Effective direction:

An organisation comes into existence with certain objectives. To attain the objectives, the activities of the organisation must be directed. Direction of the activities is effected through leadership. In short, effective leadership directs the activities of an organisation towards the attainment of the specified organisational goals.

(ii) Source of motivation:

Leadership is the motivating power to group efforts. Effective leadership motivates the subordinates for higher productivity.

(iii) Confidence:

Leadership creates confidence in-the subordinates by giving proper guidance and advice.

(iv) High morale:

Good leadership increases the morale of the employees which, in turn, contributes to higher productivity.

(v) Development of team spirit:

Effective leadership promotes team-spirit and team­work which is quite essential for the success of any organisation.

(vi) Encouraging initiative:

A progressive, forward and democratic minded leader, always encourages initiative on the part of the followers.

(vii) Overcoming resistance to change:

A leader overcomes resistance, if any on the part of followers to organisational changes; through explaining to them the utility of such changes to both—the enterprise and the employees.

What is Ethical Leadership and Why is it Important?

Ethical leadership is not only the right thing to do, it is key to driving an organization's success.

Errors, bad behavior, and poor judgment in leadership can negatively impact a company’s brand and reputation. For business success, it’s critical for organizations to fill their C-suite with ethical leaders.

Ethical leadership involves leaders and managers making decisions based on the right thing to do for the common good, not just based on what is best for themselves or for the bottom line. While profits are important, ethical leaders take into consideration the needs of customers, communities, and employees in addition to company growth and revenue when making business decisions. 

Ethical leaders encourage their team members to model this behavior, too. They help to build a workplace culture that values transparency, collaboration and inclusion, and where everyone feels safe to share their voice.

They can also help organizations recruit and retain top talent. Professionals are increasingly seeking out companies whose leaders strive to do the right thing. Generation Z, who will make up 25 percent of the workforce by 2025, demands leadership ethics more than generations that came before them. 

“Gen Z is not going to negotiate. They have really strong values and ethics, and they don’t bend them because of intimidation or because they are just getting a paycheck,” said Michael McCarthy, instructor at Harvard Division of Continuing Education’s Professional & Executive Development and host of the “ Happy at Work ” podcast. “The idea of letting harmful or hurtful behavior slide is not acceptable.”

Leaders who weigh ethical considerations before making key business decisions drive a company’s long-term success. 

The 6 Main Principles of Ethical Leadership

Having ethical leaders isn’t as simple as hiring “good” people. Companies should strive to fill their leadership ranks with people who embody the principles of ethical leadership. The six main principles include: 

Respect includes valuing others’ skills and contributions. While historically respect in the workplace may have been one-way (leaders demanding respect from employees), in an ethical work environment, respect is mutual. 

Mutual respect leads to healthier workplace relationships where both sides appreciate and support what the other is doing and feel secure in talking through issues and challenges. Healthy relationships create positive work environments, which drives increased productivity.

Current and upcoming business leaders should take mutual respect into account as workforce expectations continue to shift.  

“I tell current leadership to respect Gen Z. They have values and morals, and you’re going to have a better organization because of them,” McCarthy said. “They aren’t going to put up with the old hierarchy that doesn’t offer mutual respect.” 

2. Accountability

Ethical leaders hold themselves accountable for their actions. They make decisions based on integrity and stand behind their work. They also lead by example, communicate openly about challenges, and don’t look to place blame on others for any shortfalls.

Leaders make ethical decisions based on doing what is right for employees, customers, and the community. Because these constituents are always top of mind for ethical leaders, they often have a strong sense of service. They engage in activities such as charitable giving and volunteer work to give  back to their communities — and encourage their teams to do the same. 

Leaders who are transparent build trust amongst their organizations and amongst customers. 

To build and maintain trust, leaders must be good communicators who speak openly and honestly about issues. Regardless of the issue’s severity or unpopularity, leaders’ responsibility to be clear and candid  empowers others to make the right decisions with the information they have. 

Honesty and transparency also help to build a brand’s reputation, leading to long-term customer loyalty.

Justice is not just about following the law, but about ensuring that everyone is getting what they deserve. Ethical leaders approach situations with a focus on treating everyone fairly, and they expect their teams to treat each other and customers the same way. Through their actions, they build equitable work environments where everyone feels respected. 

6. Community

Ethical leaders view their companies as communities and consider everyone involved when evaluating situations and making decisions. By viewing their organizations this way, they build equity and inclusion into their decision-making process and create work environments that encourage collaboration across teams.

Examples of Positive and Negative Ethical Leadership

The following three examples are of companies that were faced with ethical dilemmas and how different leadership styles led to vastly different outcomes. 

Johnson & Johnson

One of the most famous examples of ethical leadership was the case of the Tylenol cyanide poisonings in the early 1980s. Seven people died of cyanide poisoning, and the only connecting factor was that they had all taken extra-strength Tylenol. During investigation, it was discovered that the tablets were laced with cyanide.

Johnson & Johnson’s leaders acted quickly and pulled all Tylenol products off the shelves — 31 million bottles, worth over $100 million — and stopped all production and advertising. The swiftness of their decision, although costly, put customers’ well-being first and saved lives.

They partnered with law enforcement to find the perpetrator and subsequently developed the first-ever tamper-resistant packaging. They were transparent with the public about what they were doing to ensure this tragedy never happened again. 

The Tylenol brand recovered from the incident, largely because of Johnson & Johnson’s ethical leadership team’s swift action and transparent care for customers.

In 2008, JetBlue left passengers stranded on the tarmac at the John F. Kennedy International Airport for more than five hours during a snowstorm. The delay had a ripple effect — JetBlue had to cancel more than 1,000 flights over the following five days.

In response, JetBlue’s CEO wrote a letter of apology to customers. He also directed his team to draft a customer bill of rights, which outlined customers’ rights to information about flights and information about compensation in the event of delays or cancellations.

The CEO also participated in a public apology tour, taking full responsibility for the incident rather than blaming it on the weather.

His transparency and accountability created trust with customers, who stayed loyal to the airline.

Wells Fargo

In September 2016 , it was revealed that employees of Wells Fargo, one of the largest banks in the United States, opened millions of unauthorized accounts in order to meet aggressive sales targets. NPR is defending its journalism and integrity after a senior editor wrote an essay accusing it of losing the public's trust.

NPR's top news executive defended its journalism and its commitment to reflecting a diverse array of views on Tuesday after a senior NPR editor wrote a broad critique of how the network has covered some of the most important stories of the age.

"An open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don't have an audience that reflects America," writes Uri Berliner.

A strategic emphasis on diversity and inclusion on the basis of race, ethnicity and sexual orientation, promoted by NPR's former CEO, John Lansing, has fed "the absence of viewpoint diversity," Berliner writes.

NPR's chief news executive, Edith Chapin, wrote in a memo to staff Tuesday afternoon that she and the news leadership team strongly reject Berliner's assessment.

"We're proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories," she wrote. "We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world."

She added, "None of our work is above scrutiny or critique. We must have vigorous discussions in the newsroom about how we serve the public as a whole."

A spokesperson for NPR said Chapin, who also serves as the network's chief content officer, would have no further comment.

Praised by NPR's critics

Berliner is a senior editor on NPR's Business Desk. (Disclosure: I, too, am part of the Business Desk, and Berliner has edited many of my past stories. He did not see any version of this article or participate in its preparation before it was posted publicly.)

Berliner's essay , titled "I've Been at NPR for 25 years. Here's How We Lost America's Trust," was published by The Free Press, a website that has welcomed journalists who have concluded that mainstream news outlets have become reflexively liberal.

Berliner writes that as a Subaru-driving, Sarah Lawrence College graduate who "was raised by a lesbian peace activist mother ," he fits the mold of a loyal NPR fan.

Yet Berliner says NPR's news coverage has fallen short on some of the most controversial stories of recent years, from the question of whether former President Donald Trump colluded with Russia in the 2016 election, to the origins of the virus that causes COVID-19, to the significance and provenance of emails leaked from a laptop owned by Hunter Biden weeks before the 2020 election. In addition, he blasted NPR's coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

On each of these stories, Berliner asserts, NPR has suffered from groupthink due to too little diversity of viewpoints in the newsroom.

The essay ricocheted Tuesday around conservative media , with some labeling Berliner a whistleblower . Others picked it up on social media, including Elon Musk, who has lambasted NPR for leaving his social media site, X. (Musk emailed another NPR reporter a link to Berliner's article with a gibe that the reporter was a "quisling" — a World War II reference to someone who collaborates with the enemy.)

When asked for further comment late Tuesday, Berliner declined, saying the essay spoke for itself.

The arguments he raises — and counters — have percolated across U.S. newsrooms in recent years. The #MeToo sexual harassment scandals of 2016 and 2017 forced newsrooms to listen to and heed more junior colleagues. The social justice movement prompted by the killing of George Floyd in 2020 inspired a reckoning in many places. Newsroom leaders often appeared to stand on shaky ground.

Leaders at many newsrooms, including top editors at The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times , lost their jobs. Legendary Washington Post Executive Editor Martin Baron wrote in his memoir that he feared his bonds with the staff were "frayed beyond repair," especially over the degree of self-expression his journalists expected to exert on social media, before he decided to step down in early 2021.

Since then, Baron and others — including leaders of some of these newsrooms — have suggested that the pendulum has swung too far.

New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger warned last year against journalists embracing a stance of what he calls "one-side-ism": "where journalists are demonstrating that they're on the side of the righteous."

"I really think that that can create blind spots and echo chambers," he said.

Internal arguments at The Times over the strength of its reporting on accusations that Hamas engaged in sexual assaults as part of a strategy for its Oct. 7 attack on Israel erupted publicly . The paper conducted an investigation to determine the source of a leak over a planned episode of the paper's podcast The Daily on the subject, which months later has not been released. The newsroom guild accused the paper of "targeted interrogation" of journalists of Middle Eastern descent.

Heated pushback in NPR's newsroom

Given Berliner's account of private conversations, several NPR journalists question whether they can now trust him with unguarded assessments about stories in real time. Others express frustration that he had not sought out comment in advance of publication. Berliner acknowledged to me that for this story, he did not seek NPR's approval to publish the piece, nor did he give the network advance notice.

Some of Berliner's NPR colleagues are responding heatedly. Fernando Alfonso, a senior supervising editor for digital news, wrote that he wholeheartedly rejected Berliner's critique of the coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict, for which NPR's journalists, like their peers, periodically put themselves at risk.

Alfonso also took issue with Berliner's concern over the focus on diversity at NPR.

"As a person of color who has often worked in newsrooms with little to no people who look like me, the efforts NPR has made to diversify its workforce and its sources are unique and appropriate given the news industry's long-standing lack of diversity," Alfonso says. "These efforts should be celebrated and not denigrated as Uri has done."

After this story was first published, Berliner contested Alfonso's characterization, saying his criticism of NPR is about the lack of diversity of viewpoints, not its diversity itself.

"I never criticized NPR's priority of achieving a more diverse workforce in terms of race, ethnicity and sexual orientation. I have not 'denigrated' NPR's newsroom diversity goals," Berliner said. "That's wrong."

Questions of diversity

Under former CEO John Lansing, NPR made increasing diversity, both of its staff and its audience, its "North Star" mission. Berliner says in the essay that NPR failed to consider broader diversity of viewpoint, noting, "In D.C., where NPR is headquartered and many of us live, I found 87 registered Democrats working in editorial positions and zero Republicans."

Berliner cited audience estimates that suggested a concurrent falloff in listening by Republicans. (The number of people listening to NPR broadcasts and terrestrial radio broadly has declined since the start of the pandemic.)

Former NPR vice president for news and ombudsman Jeffrey Dvorkin tweeted , "I know Uri. He's not wrong."

Others questioned Berliner's logic. "This probably gets causality somewhat backward," tweeted Semafor Washington editor Jordan Weissmann . "I'd guess that a lot of NPR listeners who voted for [Mitt] Romney have changed how they identify politically."

Similarly, Nieman Lab founder Joshua Benton suggested the rise of Trump alienated many NPR-appreciating Republicans from the GOP.

In recent years, NPR has greatly enhanced the percentage of people of color in its workforce and its executive ranks. Four out of 10 staffers are people of color; nearly half of NPR's leadership team identifies as Black, Asian or Latino.

"The philosophy is: Do you want to serve all of America and make sure it sounds like all of America, or not?" Lansing, who stepped down last month, says in response to Berliner's piece. "I'd welcome the argument against that."

"On radio, we were really lagging in our representation of an audience that makes us look like what America looks like today," Lansing says. The U.S. looks and sounds a lot different than it did in 1971, when NPR's first show was broadcast, Lansing says.

A network spokesperson says new NPR CEO Katherine Maher supports Chapin and her response to Berliner's critique.

The spokesperson says that Maher "believes that it's a healthy thing for a public service newsroom to engage in rigorous consideration of the needs of our audiences, including where we serve our mission well and where we can serve it better."

Xi Thinks China Can Slow Climate Change. What if He’s Right?

At first glance, Xi Jinping seems to have lost the plot.

China’s president appears to be smothering the entrepreneurial dynamism that allowed his country to crawl out of poverty and become the factory of the world. He has brushed aside Deng Xiaoping’s maxim “To get rich is glorious” in favor of centralized planning and Communist-sounding slogans like “ ecological civilization ” and “ new, quality productive forces ,” which have prompted predictions of the end of China’s economic miracle.

But Mr. Xi is, in fact, making a decades-long bet that China can dominate the global transition to green energy, with his one-party state acting as the driving force in a way that free markets cannot or will not. His ultimate goal is not just to address one of humanity’s most urgent problems — climate change — but also to position China as the global savior in the process.

It has already begun. In recent years, the transition away from fossil fuels has become Mr. Xi’s mantra and the common thread in China’s industrial policies. It’s yielding results: China is now the world’s leading manufacturer of climate-friendly technologies, such as solar panels , batteries and electric vehicles . Last year the energy transition was China’s single biggest driver of overall investment and economic growth, making it the first large economy to achieve that.

This raises an important question for the United States and all of humanity: Is Mr. Xi right? Is a state-directed system like China’s better positioned to solve a generational crisis like climate change, or is a decentralized market approach — i.e., the American way — the answer?

How this plays out could have serious implications for American power and influence.

Look at what happened in the early 20th century, when fascism posed a global threat. America entered the fight late, but with its industrial power — the arsenal of democracy — it emerged on top. Whoever unlocks the door inherits the kingdom, and the United States set about building a new architecture of trade and international relations. The era of American dominance began.

Climate change is, similarly, a global problem, one that threatens our species and the world’s biodiversity. Where do Brazil , Pakistan , Indonesia and other large developing nations that are already grappling with the effects of climate change find their solutions? It will be in technologies that offer an affordable path to decarbonization, and so far, it’s China that is providing most of the solar panels , electric cars and more. China’s exports, increasingly led by green technology, are booming, and much of the growth involves exports to developing countries .

From the American neoliberal economic viewpoint, a state-led push like this might seem illegitimate or even unfair. The state, with its subsidies and political directives, is making decisions that are better left to the markets, the thinking goes.

But China’s leaders have their own calculations, which prioritize stability decades from now over shareholder returns today. Chinese history is littered with dynasties that fell because of famines, floods or failures to adapt to new realities. The Chinese Communist Party’s centrally planned system values constant struggle for its own sake, and today’s struggle is against climate change. China received a frightening reminder of this in 2022, when vast areas of the country baked for weeks under a record heat wave that dried up rivers , withered crops and was blamed for several heatstroke deaths.

China’s government knows that it must make this green transition out of rational self-interest or risk joining the Soviet Union on history’s scrap heap, and is actively positioning itself to do so. It is increasingly led by people with backgrounds in science, technology and environmental issues. Shanghai, the country’s largest city and its financial and industrial leading edge, is headed by Chen Jining, an environmental systems expert and China’s former minister of environmental protection. Across the country, money is being poured into developing and bringing to market new advances in things like rechargeable batteries and into creating corporate champions in renewable energy .

To be clear, for Mr. Xi, this green agenda is not purely an environmental endeavor. It also helps him tighten his grip on power. In 2015, for instance, the Central Environmental Inspection Team was formed to investigate whether provincial leaders and even agencies of the central government were adhering to his green push, giving him another tool with which to exert his already considerable power and authority.

At the same time, locking in renewable energy sources is a national security issue for Mr. Xi; unlike the United States, China imports almost all of its oil, which could be disrupted by the U.S. Navy in choke points like the Malacca Strait in the event of war.

Mr. Xi’s plan — call it his Green Leap Forward — has serious deficiencies. China continues to build coal-fired power plants , and its annual greenhouse-gas emissions remain far greater than those of the United States, though American emissions are higher on a per-capita basis. China’s electric vehicle industry was built on subsidies , and the country may be using forced labor to produce solar panels. Those are serious concerns, but they fade into the background when Pakistan floods or Brazil wants to build an E.V. factory or South Africa desperately needs solar panels for a faltering energy grid.

American politics may be inadvertently helping China gobble up global market share in renewable energy products. When the United States — whether for national security or protectionist reasons — keeps Chinese companies like Huawei out of the American market or rolls up the welcome mat for electric vehicle makers like BYD or companies involved in artificial intelligence or self-driving cars, those businesses must look elsewhere.

President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act , aimed at tackling climate change, has put the United States on a solid path toward carbon neutrality. But America’s decentralization and focus on private innovation means government policy cannot have quite the same impact that it can in China.

So it is crucial for Americans to recognize that, for most of the world, perhaps for all of us, China’s ability to provide low-cost green technology is, on balance, great news. All of humanity needs to move toward renewables at a huge scale — and fast. America still leads in innovation, while China excels in taking frontier science and making its application in the real world cost-effective. If American politicians, investors and businesses recognize that climate change is humanity’s biggest threat, that could open pathways for diplomacy, collaboration and constructive competition with China that benefit us all.

Together, China and the United States could decarbonize the world. But if Americans don’t get serious about it, the Chinese will do it without them.

And if the United States tries to obstruct China, by way of corporate blacklists, trade or technology bans or diplomatic pressure, it will end up looking like part of the climate problem. That happened earlier this month when Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, during a visit to China, urged officials here to rein in green technology exports that the United States says are hurting American companies.

Mr. Xi won’t completely toss out the polluting manufacturing-for-export economic model that has served China so well, nor does he seem ready to halt construction of coal plants. Both are considered necessary for economic and energy security until the green transition is complete. But they are now only a means to an end. The endgame, it seems, is to reach carbon neutrality while dominating the industries making that possible.

Much like how the United States showed up late for World War II, China’s clean-tech companies are latecomers, piggybacking on technology developed elsewhere. But history rewards not necessarily who was there first but who was there last — when a problem was solved. Mr. Xi seems to discern the climate chaos on the horizon. Winning the race for solutions means winning the world that comes next.

Why Magic SG Joe Ingles is 'Very Important' to Team's Success

Joe Ingles has been a veteran leader for the Orlando Magic this season, helping lead them to their first postseason appearance in four years.

ORLANDO - When the Orlando Magic signed Joe Ingles this offseason, they had the playoffs in mind.

Ingles has made the playoffs every year that he's been healthy since 2017 back when he was with the Utah Jazz. So signing with the Magic, a team that has missed the playoffs since 2020, seemed like a weird fit. However, he may have been the missing piece.

“Grandpa’s helped us out all year in every aspect," Jalen Suggs said. "Helping us grow up, helping us understand the seriousness of each moment and yet how to still have fun and enjoy being here as a young team."

Ingles averaged just 4.4 points per game for the Magic this past season, but his ability to be a facilitator within the offense and getting his teammates involved was crucial towards the chemistry of the team. He has also taken a massive role in being a vocal leader for the team.

He also shoots 43.5 percent from beyond the 3-point line, which leads the team. Coach Jamahl Mosley said Ingles was "very important" to the team's game plan in terms of his perimeter shooting and defense.

The Cleveland Cavaliers shoot a high volume of threes, so the Magic will have to do their best to counterbalance. That will involve a lot of their defense, but if they aren't hitting their shots, it will be extremely difficult to come out of this series on top.

Ingles and the Magic are back in action on Saturday against the Cavs. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on ESPN.
