The Latino History Essay Competition will join the Barbara Jordan Historical Essay Competition as part of the University Interscholastic League's growing list of academic events. Both essay competitions originated in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin, of which UIL is a department.

The Latino History Essay Competition was founded in 2011 by the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at UT-Austin and became part of UIL Academics beginning in the 2012-2013 school year. During the first year of the competition, it was open only to students in South Texas.

The Latino History Essay Competition provides students the opportunity to explore the "historical and cultural legacies of Latinos in Texas history." These SSHS students, along with the other 14 finalists, will attend an awards ceremony at the UIL Academic State Meet in May, where 6 students in each event will receive state medals.
