Essays About Friendships: Top 6 Examples and 8 Prompts

Friendships are one of life’s greatest gifts. To write a friendship essay, make this guide your best friend with its essays about friendships plus prompts.

Every lasting relationship starts with a profound friendship. The foundations that keep meaningful friendships intact are mutual respect, love, laughter, and great conversations. Our most important friendships can support us in our most trying times. They can also influence our life for the better or, the worse, depending on the kind of friends we choose to keep.

As such, at an early age, we are encouraged to choose friends who can promote a healthy, happy and productive life. However, preserving our treasured friendships is a lifelong process that requires investments in time and effort.

…”[W]ithout investing the face-to-face time, we lack deeper connections to them, and the time we invest in superficial relationships comes at the expense of more profound ones.”

Social media is challenging the Dunbar number, proving that our number of casual friends runs to an average of 150. But as we expand our social base through social media, experts raise concerns about its effect on our social skills, which effectively develop through physical interaction.

“Friendship requires that rare mean betwixt likeness and unlikeness, that piques each with the presence of power and of consent in the other party.”

The influential American essayist Emerson unravels the mysteries behind the divine affinity that binds a friendship while laying down the rules and requirements needed to preserve the fellowship. To Emerson, friendship should allow a certain balance between agreement and disagreement. You might also be interested in these articles about best friends .

“Being friendly in business is necessary but friendships in business aren’t. That’s an important concept. We can have a valuable business relationship without friendship. Unfortunately, many mistakenly believe that the first step to building a business relationship is to develop a friendship.”

This essay differentiates friends from business partners. Using an anecdote, the essay warns against investing too much emotion and time in building friendships with business partners or customers, as such an approach may be futile in increasing sales.

“As racial tensions mounted around them, Drummer and Linehan developed a close connection—one that bridged their own racial differences and has endured more than four decades of evolving racial dynamics within Boston’s schools. Their friendship also served as a public symbol of racial solidarity at a time when their students desperately needed one.”

At a time when racial discrimination is at its highest, the author highlights a friendship they built and strengthened at the height of tensions during racial desegregation. This friendship proves that powerful interracial friendships can still be forged and separate from the politics of race.

“…15-year-old Massina Commesso worries a lot about friendship and feeling included. For much of her childhood, Massina had a neurotypical best friend… But as they entered high school, the other friend pulled away, apparently out of embarrassment over some of Massina’s behavior.”

Research debunks the myth that people with autism naturally detest interaction — evidence suggests the opposite. Now, research is shedding more light on the unique social skills of people with autism, enabling society to find ways to help them find true friendships.

“The cost of living crisis is affecting nearly everyone, with petrol, food and electricity prices all rising. So understandably, it’s having an impact on our friendships too.”

People are now more reluctant to dine out with friends due to the rapidly rising living costs. Friendships are being tested as friends need to adjust to these new financial realities and be more creative in cultivating friendships through lower-cost get-togethers.

8 Topic Prompts on Essays About Friendships

Essays About Friendships: The importance of friendship in early childhood development

More than giving a sense of belonging, friendships help children learn to share and resolve conflicts. First, find existing research linking the capability to make and keep friends to one’s social, intellectual, and emotional development.

Then, write down what schools and households can do to reinforce children’s people skills. Here, you can also tackle how they can help children with learning, communication, or behavioral difficulties build friendships, given how their conditions interfere with their capabilities and interactions.

As with plants, healthy friendships thrive on fertile soil. In this essay, list the qualities that make “fertile soil” and explain how these can grow the seeds of healthy friendships. Some examples include mutual respect and the setting of boundaries.

Then, write down how you should water and tend to your dearest friendships to ensure that it thrives in your garden of life. You can also discuss your healthy friendships and detail how these have unlocked the best version of yourself.

Marrying your best friend is a romance story that makes everyone fall in love. However, opening up about your feelings for your best friend is risky. For this prompt, collate stories of people who boldly made the first step in taking their friendship to a new level.

Hold interviews to gather data and ask them the biggest lesson they learned and what they can share to help others struggling with their emotions for their best friend. Also, don’t forget to cite relevant data, such as this study that shows several romantic relationships started as friendships.

Essays About Friendships: Long-distance friendship with social media

It’s challenging to sustain a long-distance friendship. But many believe that social media has narrowed that distance through an online connection. In your essay, explain the benefits social media has offered in reinforcing long-distance friendships.

Determine if these virtual connections suffice to keep the depth of friendships. Make sure to use studies to support your argument. You can also cite studies with contrasting findings to give readers a holistic view of the situation.

It could be heartbreaking to feel that your friend is gradually becoming a foe. In this essay, help your readers through this complicated situation with their frenemies by pointing out red flags that signal the need to sever ties with a friend. Help them assess when they should try saving the friendship and when they should walk away. Add a trivial touch to your essay by briefly explaining the origins of the term “frenemies” and what events reinforced its use.

We all know that there is inevitable competition in the workplace. Added to this are the tensions between managers and employees. So can genuine friendships thrive in a workplace? To answer this, turn to the wealth of experience and insights of long-time managers and human resource experts.

First, describe the benefits of fostering friendships in the workplace, such as a deeper connection in working toward shared goals, as well as the impediments, such as inherent competition among colleagues. Then, dig for case studies that prove or disprove the relevance and possibility of having real friends at work.

Whether it be the destructive duo like Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, or the hardworking pair of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, focus on a literary friendship that you believe is the ultimate model of friendship goals.

Narrate how the characters met and the progression of their interactions toward becoming a friendship. Then, describe the nature of the friendship and what factors keep it together.

In Book VIII of his Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle writes about three kinds of friendships: pleasure, utility, and virtue. Dive deeper into the Greek philosopher’s mind and attempt to differentiate his three types of friendships.

Point out ideas he articulated most accurately about friendship and parts you disagree with. For one, Aristotle refutes the concept that friendships are necessarily built on likeness alone, hence his classification of friendships. Do you share his sentiments?

How To Write a My Best Friend Essay

' data-src=

Definition: What Is a My Best Friend Essay?

Write about what you know is sage advice often given to fledgling writers. And what do many of our young students know more about than their trusty sidekick, who is a constant presence through thick and thin?

A My Best Friend Essay is precisely what it sounds like; an essay the student writes that is focused on their closest pal’s endearing attributes (and otherwise).

However, the My Best Friend Essay is more than just a chance for students to wax lyrical about their BFFs. It is an authentic opportunity for students to hone their composition skills and exercise their creative flair.

All this while talking about one of their best mate – not bad!

STRUCTURING a My Best Friend Essay

This is an essay. It says so right there in the title! Just how complex the structure of a student’s essay is will depend on essential factors such as age and ability. However, the 5-paragraph essay structure is a perfect framework for this type of composition.

One of the most beautiful aspects of the 5-paragraph essay is that it is easily modified to differentiate between lower or higher ability students by simply adjusting the number of paragraphs. The essay will still contain the same essential elements of an introduction, a body, and a conclusion, regardless of how long it is.

The 5-paragraph (or hamburger) essay is a craft in itself and much too broad a topic to go into at length. Check out our complete guide here if you want more detail on this handy essay template.

Briefly though, in essence, the 5-paragraph essay comprises three parts:

  • The Introduction : The opening paragraph will orient the reader to the topic of the essay, in this case, by introducing the show’s star, the best friend .
  • The Body : In the traditional 5-paragraph essay, this makes up three of the five paragraphs. In this type of essay, the student will use these paragraphs to flesh out the main reasons they value their friend, or (at a more advanced level) they will tell a story about them that illustrates why they are the student’s best friend.
  • The Conclusion : In the conclusion, the student can sum up why their friend holds the hallowed title of ‘best’. Or, at a higher level, the student can use the final paragraph of their essay to look forward to the future of their relationship with their best friend.

My Best Friend Essay Story

While we are teaching a short essay on my best friend’, it can also be approached from another angle, i.e., as a nonfiction story.

While the clearcut essay format may be eminently suitable for younger students, you may wish to revisit this genre with older students, this time emphasising storytelling.

In this creative nonfiction approach, students can merge the essay format with storytelling elements such as character, setting, central conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

Constructing their best friend composition in this manner allows students to work on structuring a nonfiction text. Simultaneously, it offers them a chance to develop their creative flair.

My Best Friend in 10 Lines

Another approach particularly well-suited to younger students is the my best friend essay 10 lines format.

This helps younger students get writing by giving them a clear target to aim for, which makes planning easy.

However, you can still introduce the three elements of the 5-paragraph essay here. As students list the points they want to make in their 10 lines, they can be encouraged to group these into introduction, body, and conclusion sections.

For example, a plan might look like this:

A ‘My Best Friend in 10 Lines’ Plan

Introduction

Line 1: My friend’s name.

Line 2: What she looks like.

Line 3: Where she is from/her family.

Line 4: What friendship means to me.

Line 5: How we met.

Line 6: The kindest thing she has ever done.

Line 7: The funniest thing she has ever done.

Line 8: My absolute favorite thing about her.

Line 9: Restate why she is my best friend.

Line 10: How I see our future together.

To complete their 10-line ode to their friend, the student simply builds proper sentences around each of these (or similar) ideas.

More on Planning a My Best Friend Composition

As we can see in the sample plan above, the planning process is relatively straightforward when the 5-paragraph essay structure serves as a framework. However, we may want to take things up a notch for students of a higher ability.

A good, old-fashioned brainstorming session is an excellent starting point for the student. They can list their favorite memories and their friend’s best features.

While younger students may inevitably write something of a hagiography (a biography of a saint!), older students may want to present a more realistic portrait of their ever-present amigo.

Likewise, if the student is undertaking their composition in a narrative nonfiction form, they’ll need to map out the narrative arc of their story at the planning stage.

As with any story, the conflict will serve as the engine of the narrative. However, this conflict does not have to take the form of a problem between the writer and the best friend. After all, this text is more likely to be something of a love letter than a letter of complaint. Instead, the conflict is more likely to take the form of a problem or a challenge faced by the writer and their pal together.

Whether or not the student’s text will take a full-blown story form, true-to-life anecdotes will bring life to the student’s writing. The planning process is the perfect time to dump these onto paper, even if they don’t all make it into the final draft.

How to Start a MY Best Friend Essay

As with most text types, fiction or nonfiction, the writer will want to grab the reader’s attention from the outset. An effective way of doing this is by using a hook.

How to Hook The Reader

The student writer has many methods available to grasp the reader’s attention. While some of these will only be suitable for more advanced students, most can be adapted with a bit of effort for our younger writers.

  • Start in the Middle of the Action

Technically known as, In Medias Res , this technique involves opening the story in the middle of a moment of dramatic tension with the exposition filled in later. This type of wizardry is probably best reserved for the more skilled student writer.

  • Make a Bold Promise at the Outset

The promise of a big payoff can undoubtedly catch a reader’s eye and draw them in, but the student-writer must follow through later in the text. For less experienced students, you may want to offer a writing prompt to help out here. For example,

My best friend Jack is truly one of a kind, but just how special he is wasn’t clear to me until the day a fire broke out in our school.

Students can quickly adapt such prompts by changing the event mentioned to their own circumstances.

  • Create a Sense of Intimacy

Another way to grasp the reader’s interest is to create a sense of intimacy right from the start. This can be achieved by addressing the reader directly in a conversational tone. Students should use informal language and approach writing their text as if they were speaking to a close friend – this is perfect for this writing style.

  • Open with an Anecdote

Another way to create interest (and a sense of intimacy) is to open up with an interesting anecdote about the friend. Students can select an interesting or humorous story to use as a carrot to entice the reader in. The student could substitute an exciting or amusing fact in shorter pieces for a full-blown anecdote.

  • Begin with a Quotation

Quotes are a great way to garner attention. There are many online repositories of inspirational quotes on every topic under the sun where students can find a golden nugget of friendship-based wisdom to open their masterpieces. They must simply type in keywords such as ‘famous’, ‘quotes’, and ‘friendship’ to uncover a smorgasbord of well-articulated wisdom for students to choose from. However, students should ensure the sentiment expressed in their selected quote ties into the type of friendship described in their work.

Working the Body

As we stated earlier in this article, the 5-paragraph essay structure, or the narrative writing arc, lays out a suitable template for the student-writer to work their way through the body of their text. However, it’s worth pointing out five areas where a little attention can significantly impact.

  • Get Specific

The devil’s in the details. The more specific the student is in their writing, the more effectively they will communicate with the reader.

Encourage students to be as precise as possible in their descriptions. A thesaurus is an excellent tool to help students find just the right word for the job.

  • Vary Sentence Length

Often, emergent writers rely on the same couple of simple sentence structures in their writing. This soon makes the writing monotonous for the reader; if they continue to read, it is only with effort that they will finish the student’s work.

Variety is not only the spice of life but also the spice of good writing. Encourage students to vary their sentence structures and alternate between long and short sentences to diversify the rhythm of their writing and evoke interest on the reader’s part.

  • Use Dialogue

Weaving dialogue into a my best friend essay text is a great way to bring colour and variety to a student’s writing. It also allows the student to practice punctuating dialogue – an essential skill!

Students will need to learn to listen carefully if they are to be able to write how people actually speak. Encouraging them to read their dialogue aloud is an effective way to check if it rings true.

  • Incorporate Literary Devices

Though this is undoubtedly a nonfiction text, it has firm roots in creative writing too. Students should incorporate some of the literary techniques and devices that we’d more commonly associate with poetry and fiction writing to add colour, creativity, and imagination to their writing.

For example, for younger students, physical descriptions of their BFF provide the perfect opportunity to introduce similes and hyperbole. Don’t be afraid to get comical here; writing should be fun, after all.

Does their friend have a big nose? How big? As big as an elephant’s trunk, perhaps?

Just make sure students avoid being too mean or poking fun at areas too sensitive for their friends.

It is easy to differentiate different abilities by challenging stronger students to use more complex literary devices in their work. Zoomorphism anyone?

  • Evoke the Five Senses

Emergent writers often display a bias towards only using the sense of sight in their descriptions. To bring their writing up a notch, encourage your students to employ all five senses in their writing.

By evoking the sense of hearing, smell, taste, and touch in their work, students will help their writing to come alive in the reader’s imagination.

WRAPPING THINGS Up

In a regular 5-paragraph essay, the concluding paragraph is usually the time to summarize the main arguments and drive home the thesis statement one more time. Obviously, things are a little bit different in a “my best friend essay.”

Of course, students can take the opportunity to revisit and restate the main reasons why their best friend holds the best-friend-championship belt. Still, there is a more artistic way to use their composition’s final paragraph.

Ask students to think about their friendship and where they see it in five, ten, twenty, or even forty years.

Undoubtedly, for younger students, in particular, this may be a bit of a challenge, but it can be a fun thought experiment too. Students can pose themselves questions to help, such as:

  • Will we be neighbours?
  • Will we work together?
  • Will our children go to school together? Etc.

Taking a tentative step into the possibilities of the future can make for an impactful ending.

Essay on How I Met My Best Friend

April 6, 2020 by Study Mentor 4 Comments

Best friend is a person who is like your family. A person with whom you can share anything without having the fear of being judged by that person and also that person will heal all your problems too. Best friends are like brother and sister who becomes a part of your family with time.

They are always there with you and also take part in all kind of activities with you including doing prank on someone and to share the blame with you. They become your lifeline without whom survival is going to be difficult for you. Best friend are a part of someone’s life.

That person is a part that cannot be separated so easily from you. A best friend always supports you and does crazy things with you. A best friend makes life more fun and fills it with happiness. There is no replacement of a best friend in one’s life.

I and my best friend go way back. She has become the main pillar in my life without which I will fall down. Both of us are absolutely crazy and follow each other blindly. We have become each other’s support for years now. I still laugh when I remember the first time I saw her and exactly how we become friends and then best friend.

It was around five years back that I met her. I had changed my school and went to join a new one. I was the late admission student. The first day I went to my classroom and saw that all the benches are full except for the last bench where one sit was open.

I went and sat there. Our class teacher came and after he saw me sitting in the last bench, made me get up and sit beside two other students in a bench that was too small for three students to sit. I didn’t want to sit there and neither the occupants of that bench wanted me to sit there.

But sir made me sit there. I could feel that they don’t want me there and they could feel that I didn’t want to sit there. But we weren’t given a choice in that matter.

The student beside whom I sat that day is my best friend now. That time we both mutually disliked each other and didn’t want to sit beside each other at any cost. So, after sir left I immediately changed my sit and went back to the last bench.

The next day, I went really early so that I can sit somewhere I like and can possibly make new friend and it did happen. I made a new friend and we became bench buddies. The bench that I chose to sit on happened to be the bench just before the bench in which she sat on.

Days passed and neither of us became friends or talk with each other. But both of us wanted one common thing and that is none of us wanted the other to sit anywhere else other than our respected benches because none of us liked the other girls in our class much other than our respective friend slash bench mates and boys was out of the question.

So, whichever of us went first, always kept the sit on the other bench so that no one can sit there except us. That is how we started talking.

After we started talking, we still didn’t hit it off. We still weren’t anything more than class mates but at least we were talking normally. But if we were given the chance, we wouldn’t even talk with the other willingly.

Then there were days when both of our partner’s were absent and during that time we used to sit by each other and that is something we chose to do. During that time we actually got interested in talking with each other and would talk with each other willingly.

Then came the time where we had to do a project and none of us had any idea how to do it. So, all of us were asking the other about it and the four of us decided that we will do the project together in her house. After I found out her address, I realised that she lives three minutes away from my house.

As I moved there that year only, none of us knew about each other. During that project only we hit it off and became friends. It was convenient for both of us as we are literally three minutes away from each other.

Then the winter came. Beside her house there was a small park and I used to visit that park frequently. During winter, we decided to play badminton with each other in that park. After our matches were over, we used to stay there till evening and used to talk about each other.

That is how we both bonded alone. After our talks, both of us realised that we are not that different from each other. There is a phrase that I remembered which was – same pole repel each other and at that particular winter, I realised that this is true not only for magnets but also in real life.

That winter five years ago, is the time when we actually bonded and became best of friends. There were many ups and downs in our life like board exam and then going to separate college and me moving away again but that did not affect our friendship at all.

We are still the same kind of best friends that we were before I moved away and we always will be like that. After all we consider each other as sisters.

Even today when we think about the first day we both saw each other, we laugh heartily. We can never forget how we met and how we became friends and then gradually best friends.

We proudly share this story while laughing at each other. I think because of how we become friends, our bond has gotten stronger and can withstand the test of time. Now if someone looks at us, they can never say that there was a time when we almost hated each other and will probably think that we are friends from childhood.

Describe a new friend you`ve made recently

Sample band 8

I am going to talk about Mrs. Kim who is a lovely lady that I recently  befriended .

I started  college life  3 months ago and on my first day of school I was unable to  navigate my way to  my new university where I was studying. Google Maps wasn’t really as helpful as I thought it would be and I couldn’t  figure out the way  by asking the locals either. So, after many hours of  wandering around , I finally  resorted to  asking a lady who was selling noodles from a food cart near where I was standing. I asked the lady if she knew the way to the HCMC University of Education, and she just smiled and pointed at the large, five-story building across the road.  Turns out  I was there  all along!  So, after thanking the lady, we had a little chat and I found out she also came from Ninh Thuan, which is my hometown! We immediately became good friends and now her food cart has become my favourite  lunch spot  whenever I’m at university.

So I guess the main reason that Mrs. Kim and I have become good friends is basically because I think she’s a really sweet lady. As I’ve gotten to know her better I’ve realized that she’s had quite  a tough life , yet she has managed to maintain a sweet and gentle personality that many other women who have been through struggles like her would have lost by now. I guess the other reason we get on so well is because we share the same hometown, and I tend  to get on well with  people from my hometown. Sometimes I think the best friendships are made so unexpectedly.

Vocabulary highlights:

  • Befriended  – to make friends with
  • college life  – student or university life
  • navigate my way to  – to find my way
  • figure out the way  – to find my way
  • wandering around  – walking around without a fixed route or destination

  • all along  – the whole time
  • lunch spot  – a place to eat lunch like a café, restaurant or food cart
  • a tough life  – a challenging or difficult life
  • to get on well with  – to have a good relationship with someone

15 Prompts for Talking and Writing About Friendship

Questions to help students reflect on the meaning of friendship in their lives

essay writing on the day i got a new friend

By Natalie Proulx

Who are your closest friends? How much do you share with them? Do you actually like your friends? What have you learned from them?

Below, we’ve rounded up 15 questions we’ve asked students over the years all about friendship. You can use them as prompts for writing or discussion, inside the classroom or out. We hope they’ll inspire you to reflect on your friendships, consider how you can strengthen the ones you have, and motivate you to reach out and make new ones.

Each prompt includes an excerpt from a related New York Times article, essay or photo; a link to the related piece; and several questions to help you think deeply about it. Many of these questions are still open for comment from students 13 or older.

You can find even more ideas for teaching and learning about friendship in our related lesson plan: How Students Can Cultivate Meaningful Friendships Using The New York Times .

1. Who Are Your Friends?

Do you have a “best friend,” a few close friends or a large group of friends? What interests, experiences, passions and circumstances forge those relationships? What are some of your favorite memories or admirable characteristics you associate with your friends?

Use this Picture Prompt to talk or write about your most important friendships.

2. How Alike Are You and Your Friends?

Did you know there is science behind how we choose our friends? Research has shown that we tend to befriend people who are much like us in a wide array of characteristics, including age, race, religion, even our handgrip strength.

In this prompt , you’ll read more about the things that bond us, and then share what you and your friends have in common.

3. Do You Have Any Unlikely Friendships?

Though we tend to connect with people who are like us, sometimes friendship happens with someone we’d least expect. That was the case for Spencer Sleyon, a 22-year-old rapper and producer from East Harlem, and Rosalind Guttman, an 81-year-old woman living in a retirement community in Florida, who met playing the Words With Friends game.

Do you have any surprising friendships like this one?

4. How Much Do You Share With Your Friends?

Do you often express your innermost thoughts, feelings and struggles to those closest to you? Or do you tend to keep those things to yourself? Being vulnerable can be scary, but research shows it’s important for building connections with others.

Use this prompt to reflect on what it feels like to open up to your friends, and how you might try to do more of it.

5. Do You Have Satisfying Friendships?

Are internet friendships as fulfilling as in-person ones? In a guest essay, a writer argues that “The kind of presence required for deep friendship does not seem cultivated in many online interactions. Presence in friendship requires ‘being with’ and ‘doing for.’”

Do you agree? Can online “friends” be true friends? Share your opinion.

6. Do You Have Any Close Friends?

Do you prefer to have many casual friends or just a few close ones? What makes a person a “best” friend? Do you wish you had more close friendships? This prompt explores these questions and more, as well as shares expert advice for developing deeper friendships.

7. How Do You React When Your Friendships Change?

Have you ever become less close to a friend over time? Have you ever felt jealousy when your friend joined another friend group? Have you ever had a friendship just fizzle out? These kinds of changes happen all the time, but they can be difficult to navigate.

Tell us what you do when you feel a friendship start to shift.

8. Do Social Media and Smartphones Make Your Friendships Stronger?

essay writing on the day i got a new friend

Does being able to stay constantly in touch with your friends via social media, texting and location sharing strengthen your friendships and make them easier to maintain? Or does it do the opposite? Weigh in with your experiences on this prompt .

9. Do You Like Your Friends?

It may sound like a strange question, but a 2016 study found that only about half of perceived friendships are mutual. That means you might not even like someone who thinks of you as a best friend. And vice versa.

Is this is true for any of your relationships?

10. How Often Do You Text Your Friends Just to Say ‘Hi’?

When was the last time you texted, called, emailed or messaged a friend just to say “hello”? Research suggests casual check-ins might mean more than we realize. Do you underestimate how much your friends would like hearing from you?

Read what experts have to say and then share your thoughts.

11. Is It Harder for Men and Boys to Make and Keep Friends?

American men appear to be stuck in a “friendship recession,” according to a recent survey. Less than half of men said they were truly satisfied with the number of friendships they had. The same study also found that men are less likely than women to seek emotional support from or share personal feelings with their friends.

Does this reflect your experience? Weigh in.

12. Do You Have Any Intergenerational Friendships?

“When applying to my job, I had no idea of the friendships I would be making with 70+ year old women. They teach me new things every day while I hear their life stories and things they have done,” Laura from Ellisville wrote in response to this prompt.

Do you have any friends who are significantly younger or older than you? What do you think we can gain from these kinds of intergenerational friendships? Tell us here.

13. Have You Ever Been Left Out?

Imagine it’s a Saturday. All your friends told you they were busy, so you’re sitting at home, alone, mindlessly scrolling through Instagram. But then you see a post that stops you in your tracks. It’s a picture of all of your friends hanging out together — without you. This is what happened to Hallie Reed in her first semester at college.

Has something like this ever happened to you? Use this prompt to talk or write about how it felt.

14. What Have Your Friends Taught You About Life?

“My friends taught me different perspectives on life.” “My friends have taught me to not care what other people think.” “My friends have taught me to be myself.”

These are just a few of the responses teenagers had to this prompt. What have your friends taught you?

15. Have You Ever Had a Significant Friendship End?

Few relationships are meant to last forever. In a guest essay, Lauren Mechling writes that “even bonds founded on that rare, deeply felt psychic connection between two people” are “bound to fray.”

Have you experienced this with someone with whom you were once very close? What happened? Share your story.

Students 13 and older in the United States and Britain, and 16 and older elsewhere, are invited to comment. All comments are moderated by the Learning Network staff, but please keep in mind that once your comment is accepted, it will be made public and may appear in print.

My Best Friend Essay in English (100, 200, 300, 500 Words)

A best friend is a special and unforgettable person in our lives and will stay longer than other common friends. We share most of the things, conversations, and important talks and support them anytime in our lives.

In this topic, we are discussing the best friend and the memories that we all spent with our friends and best friends.

We have covered an essay pattern in various paragraphs of around 100 words, 200 words, 300 words, and 500 words, respectively, that helps many of the children or students of class 2 to 12th to understand the short and descriptive essay pattern of the best friend.

Table of Contents

My Best Friend Essay 100 Words

I always thank God that he sent Rahul into my life as my best friend, and I also wish that everyone has a friend like Rahul. Rahul and I met on the first day of school after the summer vacation when we were studying in the 5th standard.

I also remember an incident when our class teacher asked him about his previous school and the place from where he came. He is a good speaker, and he gave an interesting answer to everyone in his introduction in class.

He is good at studies and also a good athlete. He loves running and singing too, and his handwriting is also very neat and clean. I feel happy to become his friend, and he also loves my company, and we spend most of our time together.

My Best Friend Essay 200 Words

I have had a lot of friends since childhood, but Raghav is one of the kindest and most trustworthy friends for me. I must say that Rohan has been my best friend since childhood. He is a very good person and a true friend because he has a good manner that he never lies to anyone, and hates people who lie to him. He is a kind boy and also a sincere student. We both live in the same building, and our apartments are also in front of each other.

My parents also met my friend in the school at the parents-teachers meeting, and they also like Raghav and his sincerity. We both have been in the same class from the 3rd standard until now. We are in the 10th standard now, and we both help each other in the preparation for Board exams, which will be held in the month of March.

He always invites me to his house to play video games with him. Every Sunday, we both enjoy playing video games with popcorn and juice together. Sometimes, our school teachers also wonder about our true friendship and the strong bond between us. He has a set of badminton rackets and a shuttle, and we also play together in the evening near our building. We both love each other’s company.

My Best Friend Essay 300 Words

Everyone has at least a single friend who is more than just a friend to them. Getting a friend is common, but getting a true friend is very rare and a bit special. It is like a big achievement for people to get a trustworthy and lifelong best friend. I also had a best friend in my life too since childhood. His name is Ganaraj, and his mother is Telugu. We are neighbors too and also classmates. We always sit together in school and also spend most of the time together.

He is a very talented person and always supports me in my studies. We both like mathematics, and also we love to solve maths numerical problems. I like to play games, and we both always play games together and participate in the sports that are held in school. Our favorite sport is Cricket, and we both are good all-rounders on our school cricket team. Our class teacher always suggests and supports us to play cricket even better and also helps in education to achieve success in life.

He is very valuable to me, and I always value his friendship as I value my parents. He is like my family, as a brother from another mother. Whenever I need his help and support, my best friend is there for me to hold me. We both live in the precious moment and create memories that will stay with me forever. Our friendship is a kind of beautiful relationship, and I hope any kind will never break these mistakes. Every Sunday, we go together to a playground near our locality, and we spend most of our time there. My parents also like Ganaraj to be my friend. Everyone is happy with our friendship and has a strong bond that never goes down in any situation.

My Best Friend Essay 500 Words

My best friend’s name is Siddhart Jadhav. We have been friends since class 7th A in Alfred Nobel High School. We both studied in the same school in childhood but not in the same class as our sections are different. Later that time, all the students from all the sections are sorted according to the previous academics’ percentages and grades and separated into four different sections. Due to this separation, I met Siddhart in the 7th A, and we became friends at that time. Later, time goes by, and our friendship bond becomes stronger, and we become best friends with each other and spend most of our time together in school, tuition, and extra classes. We also sit on the same bench in the classroom.

Our likes and dislikes are also common, and we also love to dance and sing. In every annual gathering and other function that is held in our school, we both participate and give our best performances. We never wanted to win the competitions, our intention was to enjoy the gathering. Some of our school teachers don’t like our togetherness and friendship, but some of them loved and always blessed our strong bonded friendship to stay longer and longer. Siddharth and I always talked in the running classroom, and most of the time, our teacher also punished both of us by standing outside the classroom. We always tried to irritate the lecturer in the chemistry lectures by asking tons of doubts and questions. We eat tiffin boxes sitting on the last benches.

Apart from this naughtiness, Siddharth is very punctual, and he is never late for coming to school and attending classes. He always completes his homework at a given time and being with him, I also start studying very well and completing my homework on time. He keeps his books and copies very clean. His writing is very nice and encourages me to write cleanly and clearly for better understanding. My parents also compliment my friend that being with him, I also become responsible and a good student.

Siddharth and I are both excellent football players and athletes. When we both start playing the football game, the opponent team never wins. Our sports teacher always motivates us and tells us that we will become good football players one day. My parents also know Siddharth very much, and they like his pleasant behavior. Feel free when Siddharth and I stay together, whether for playing games, video games, study, or for going out to have fun with other classmates. Siddharth is my best friend, my first friend. He is the one who offers me help in my studies when I need it, supports me and always shows love to me, defends me, and stands by my side in any situation no matter what.

In academics, my best friend, Siddharth, is chosen to be awarded the best student of the year in the 10th class. He is one of the brilliant students of our school and also won many of the competitions that were held in school. He is like a well-wisher, and I always enjoyed his company. He, too, feels secure and relieved by spending time with me as well. He is like a problem-solving friend to me. I never wanted to lose him in my life.

The violence has become an internal part of our social life nowadays. We see it everywhere: we read about it, watch the news and our favorite series. The problem, however, is not in this, but in how we perceive such type of behavior. The scenes of murders, mockery, attacks and all the sorts of assaults we consume as an already usual thing. It always seems that these stories are so far away from you, on the other side of the screen, in written plots of producers and newsmakers. You feel so safe, sitting on your old brown sofa in your newly decorated living room that no blood on the screen can terrify you. They have caught the assaulter, they have saved the victim, but they have never let you see what is hidden behind the curtain. After each next episode or news announcement you just turn your television or computer off and go back to the real life without knowing anything about how to actually react if such situation occurs in everyday life. Surely, because it is not real and can never happen to you. Well, until it actually happens. I used to live this secure life without an odd though that people on the screens with all their crimes could meet me on the street. Yes, we always get hundreds of warning from our parents that it is dangerous to walk at nights, that this part of the city has a bad reputation, that in the neighbor town they found a body of a dead girl of my age. I never really listened. Of course, I nodded politely, exclaiming that our world is so cruel, but never really believed in it. So I continued my night crawls home, with friends or alone, exposing myself so naively to the city, that it finally showed me its teeth. This day has settled in my memory as a bothersome bug that accidently got into your room in the summer evening. You try to chase it away, it annoys you, makes you feel uncomfortable, but will never leave until you finally calm down and give it some time. Oh, how I would hope that the time is the cure that I need from this day. Our day was actually about to finish: we had an amazing chill Sunday with my friend when you go out in the morning, taking a coffee to go and let the sunshine soak into your skin. It was simply fresh, positive and moving day, so we exhausted ourselves with this joy and were walking home after some frozen margarita in the newly opened bar downtown. Now I often ask myself why we were walking. Why did we not take a bus or caught a taxi? All the thoughts of this evening usually start with “what if”. But we were walking because it was what we wanted to do and who would ever know where we would end up in the end. We were passing through the old park, near the dusty old bar. These bars are usually having this feeling of constant dirtiness, given the time and a hint of whiskey and beer, spilled on the counter. Sometimes there is even a lonely slot machine with blinking lights of lemon, cherry and a joker on it. One of such bars was exactly the one we were passing by, and the blinking light just got into my eyesight when I suddenly realized something went wrong. The man ran out of the bar, followed by the other two. There was something from wild cats in their behavior as if they did not know where to throw their energy. It was clear that they have done something bad as the tallest guy hold a big bag that you actually see on the screen when people rob the place. While their eyes were desperately prowling around, trying to estimate the situation we have frozen on the place with bated breath. The man who ran out first has noticed us and I have noticed he was holding a gun. I often ask myself why I have not remarked this detail in the first place. Perhaps, because the eyes of the assault looked at us first, filled with fierce and agony. After that, we faced the gunpoint that expressed absolutely the opposite – calm and coldness. The time was slowing down and then going super fast as if someone had a TV remote. I gasped in a shock and my friend immediately reacted by pushing me aside and trying to cover us from the robbers. I have fallen into the bushes, scratching my hands and face with the small branches. Then I have heard a shot of a gun. It was only one but the noise of it was giving echoes in my head over and over again. I also heard the men’s screams, followed by their running away footsteps. I think I have not fallen until the very end, as soon as I took a suffocating breath I pushed myself out of the bush and looked around, just like that man nearly did, in desperation. My friend was lying on the ground, moaning through his clenched teeth. He was shot in the leg and the blood was quickly spreading over his jeans and coloring the light gravel on the pavement. Without any thought I rushed to him, trying both to grab his head and examine his leg. It seemed as the reality around me collapsed. There was me, my bleeding friend and a blurry surrounding with everything mashed up: the bar, the park, the air. I felt small explosions all inside my body, in every part of it. The thoughts were rushing with the incredible speed: I need to tie the wound, we need to call for help, I have a blood, blood on my hands and it is trickling, warm, the blood of my friend. I looked in the eyes of my friend and surprisingly, his level of panic was lower than mine. Probably he was partially blinded by the pain of the shot or I simply took all the panic attack on my count. The pale and trembling bartender were calling for the ambulance. I was somehow calling for the God. My friend was trying to move and distract himself from the pain. All the situation reminded of a chaos that happened from nowhere in the calm neighborhood where the lights just went on and the life was slowing down. I suddenly thought about our parents, about all the talks we had and what a shock it will bring to them. I had no thoughts about my possible friend’s death or mine. Somehow all my usual skeptic suggestions vanished, leaving the clear sureness that we all are going to be fine. It happens to me often when I first think I have lost something. Whenever I do not feel this snap off feeling inside – I will find the missing thing. The same was here; I had no fear of losing my friend. Now I often ask myself what if it was an overabundance of adrenaline. When the ambulance and the police came, everything seemed to get structured somehow. As soon as they arrived we knew the algorithm of our actions, followed by the sound of a police radio, the warming blanket from the ambulance, the smell of medicines. After this night, we have not spoken about it a lot with my friend. We do not feel the necessity. I have remarked that he has become more thoughtful, flying away in his thinking and absently returning when you call him. Every time we now watch something together, I see him cringing like from something disturbing when they shot the gun on the screen. I feel him, he is a survival. Everyone see the shots, nobody tell you how to live after you had one. I believe that we will find a way out, because I have this feeling inside of me, like when you have not lost a thing. My friend just needs more time, and I need to stop asking myself these often questions.

Essay About Betrayal Of A Trusted Friend

Essay example on narrative about friend betrayal.

As a child growing up friends are everything. Your best friend is the one you share all your secrets with and trust them not to tell anyone. They are the one who knows everything about you and stands by your side through everything. For some, best friends may change frequently, but that wasn’t the case of Michelle and l. That was the type of friend Michelle was. We had been friends since the first grade and shared everything.

We never kept secrets from one another and more importantly, we never shared those secrets with anyone else. Well at least I didn’t. One fall I learned many important lessons in life.

The most important one was not to trust people. Sounds cynical I know, but I don’t know any other way to put it. I was 12 years old and trust had never been an issue for me, but that year brought on many changes.

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon my whole outlook on life changed. On a day that seemed like so many before, my brother-in-law raped me. Dealing with that was more than I knew how to handle. The betrayal of the one person I thought I could trust only added to the pain. A few weeks passed before I could even bring myself to tell Michelle. He had made me feel like it was my fault, that I had done something to deserve it.

“ This writer never make an mistake for me always deliver long before due date. Am telling you man this writer is absolutely the best. ”

He has also convinced me that if my sister found out it would cause her to lose the baby she was carrying. At that time I really didn’t know any better so I believed him. Finally I realized I had to tell someone and of course Michelle was who I turned to. I explained what happened, how it made me feel, how it made me view things. Never in my life did I think she would tell anyone. Once again I was wrong, within three days it seemed the whole school knew. To make matters worse Michelle told people that it had been my fault. That it wasn’t rape at all, that I had agreed to it. Even worse she told them I was pregnant by him.

I couldn’t understand how she could do something like that to me. Here I was trying to cope with what had been done to me physically and she betrayed me in a way that I couldn’t even begin to understand. Granted, in time the talk moved on to something else as it always does in schools, and they all realized that I wasn’t pregnant. Still, the damage to me was already done. I learned the hard way the need to be careful who you trust. It is something that was remained with me to this day. After being betrayed by my best friend, it became nearly impossible to trust anyone. Betrayed by my best friend By eschewing 123

  • O.J. and the Untouchables: Getting Away With It

White or Black, if you’ve got the bucks, you can duck the heat. Notes on a modern-day rite of passage.

essay writing on the day i got a new friend

Editor’s note: This essay originally appeared in New York’ s issue dated October 16, 1995, shortly after a jury acquitted O.J. Simpson. We’re reprinting it on the occasion of his death today at 76.

As you may have heard, O.J. Simpson walked. And the first thing he did, Disney World being out of the question, was have a party at his Rockingham estate. O.J. would see his small children Sydney and Justin the next day in a tasteful reunion, with only the Star present to take exclusive photos for upwards of $500,000; right now, as Nicole’s father said, he had “some wild oats to sow.” Near where police had found O.J.’s blood-saturated socks, white-gloved waiters hovered with offerings of shrimp, steak, and chicken. The wingding featured Champagne on the balcony; Simpson’s mother, Eunice, arriving in a cream Rolls-Royce; and “curvy nude model” Paula Barbieri — as the New York Post delicately put it — arriving for the night. The whole fiesta was filmed for later airing on O.J.’s expected $10 million pay-per-view interview. A classy homecoming, in short, one bespeaking the humility that has enabled Simpson to endure these monstrous false accusations.

Wait. That little bubble of sarcasm was wholly inappropriate, and I apologize. I still catch myself thinking that a man who is manifestly guilty of butchering two people like pigs in a slaughterhouse and who should spend the rest of his life vainly scraping at his bars with a dull toothbrush might give thanks for his freedom in a more seemly manner. Might even feel a pang of, oh, I don’t know, guilt.

But that’s old thinking, yesterday’s morality. The fact is that today powerful men walk or do only token time, feel no guilt, and often cash in even bigger than before. In the old days Fatty Arbuckle’s career was ruined, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb received lengthy sentences for murder, and Robert Mitchum served time for smoking pot. Nowadays, punishment, like taxes, is for the little people.

Witness sculptor Carl Andre (acquitted of pushing his wife out the window after an argument); John DeLorean (acquitted of drug possession, conspiracy, and distribution, despite an incriminating videotape); the director John Landis (acquitted of the involuntary manslaughter of actor Vic Morrow); Washington fixer Clark Clifford (indicted but never tried — because of ailing health — on charges of bribery and conspiracy in the secret acquisition of First American Bank by BCCI); Senator Alfonse D’Amato (found by the Senate Ethics Committee to have conducted his office in an “improper and inappropriate manner,” but not charged with influence peddling to Wedtech, Unisys, and many other companies); and Michael Milken (did time but just rehabilitated with a $50 million bouquet from Ted Turner for his fine work in getting Turner together with Time Warner).

Witness also the merry Iran-contra gang: Oliver North and John Poindexter, whose felony charges were reversed on an evidentiary technicality; Caspar Weinberger and Robert McFarlane, who were pardoned by outgoing president George Bush; Bush himself, whose claim to be “out of the loop” was undercut by Weinberger’s handwritten meeting notes; and Ronald Reagan, who gave investigators three different versions of what he knew and when he knew it.

All these guys knew other guys who knew the guys to know; they were upheld by their network; they had top lawyers. Lawyers! The one moment in the Simpson trial when I admired a defense lawyer’s probity was when Robert Shapiro stood in court to denounce Johnnie Cochran for making racist detective Mark Fuhrman the issue. “Not only did we play the race card, we dealt it from the bottom of the deck,” Shapiro said, apologizing to humanity in general. Oh. My time line is off — Shapiro said that after the verdict, when the race card had already trumped for his client.

The piety we heard from so many commentators, including President Clinton, to the effect that the jury system, whatever its flaws, blah, blah, blah, is a dusty civics lesson that shouldn’t even be taught in the third grade. The truth is: If you can afford to hire Johnnie Cochran — or Roy Black or Richard “Racehorse” Haines or Gerry Spence or Thomas Puccio or Alan Dershowitz — at $400 an hour, you’ll probably get away with it. While Martha “Sunny” von Bülow lies in a coma from insulin injections, her husband, Claus, is a glam socialite with a roguish cachet (yes, yes, acquitted in the retrial with Puccio at his side after Dershowitz won an appeal). We kinda think you did it, Claus, but you’re so darn Continental and debonair.

Does anyone doubt that if Susan Smith, who drove her kids into a lake, had had enough money to hire Leslie Abramson, she’d be home right now eating microwave popcorn? Abramson, Erik Menendez’s fiercely mothering attorney, would connect the dots of victimization: sexually abused by her stepfather; rejected by her boyfriend; hasn’t she suffered enough? Gina Grant, too, suffered considerable abuse before she clubbed her mother 13 times with a candlestick. But she worked hard, aced her SATs, and was set to go to Harvard until the university caught wind of the whole, um, you know, the thing that happened. lf Grant had had Johnnie Cochran, she’d be blowing froth off a cappuccino in Harvard Square.

Of course, both Smith and Grant would have done better if they were men. Guys have license. Judges and juries find their flaws natural and forgivable (of Dershowitz’s celebrity clients, Patty Hearst and Leona Helmsley fared least well). But even prominent men need a fortune to be convincing as poor victims. Former House Ways and Means chairman Dan Rostenkowski is having trouble defending against charges that he misappropriated more than $640,000 simply because, after spending $3 million on lawyers, he’s broke. Robert Vesco, now languishing in a Cuban prison for marketing a supposed wonder drug, was a fool to flee America. He should have taken the $224 million he embezzled, hired about 500 lawyers, and gotten himself off on a technicality like a man.

So clear is it that money buys reasonable doubt that we should simply codify it: Henceforth, anyone who can afford to hire Johnnie Cochran is not guilty. Simple as that. When the prosecutor says, “Isn’t this you on the videotape, killing your whole family down to your daughter’s gerbils, Puff and Spanky, and then illegally hooking yourself up to a premium cable channel?” you simply say, “May it please the court, my attorney [ dramatic pause ] … Johnnie Cochran!” Pandemonium in the court, and you’re escorted home in a white minivan.

Let’s allocate society’s resources where they can be effective. In the future, we should only try poor people, preferably those with marginal IQs who don’t speak much English and have never heard of the Miranda decision. And let’s reconsider the whole idea of court-appointed lawyers. If Colin Ferguson can do such a masterful (and cheap!) job defending himself — even while missing a few toys in the attic — this is clearly an area where private enterprise should replace government intervention.

In employing the Cochran standard, we will simply be adopting our foreign-relations paradigm for domestic use. The U.S. has expressed distaste for — and finally bombed the positions of — Bosnian Serb leaders Radovan Karazdic and General Ratko Mladic (charged with crimes against humanity for their gleefully announced blood “feast” against Muslims, which required killing 200,000 civilians and raping up to 20,000 women). Yet we winked at the ethnic cleansings carried out by Croatian president and unreconstructed antisemite Franjo Tudjman.

So, too, we insisted that Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge, which killed at least 1 million Cambodians during the ’70s, be part of recent election negotiations. And remember George Bush shamelessly toasting the late Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos: “We love your adherence to democratic principles”? We brought that policy home in 1990, when Imelda Marcos was acquitted of stealing $222 million from the Philippines and investing it in Manhattan real estate. Somehow, she was able to afford Gerry Spence.

What a benevolent country! The O.J. case was rife with troubling portents about spousal abuse and racist police, but the bottom line is that — finally! — a prominent Black reprobate can go as scot-free as a prominent white reprobate. Boxing promoter Don King’s odyssey shows how far we’ve come. Thirty years ago he served four years for manslaughter, but he cleanly beat a 1985 federal indictment for tax evasion. Just charged again with nine more counts of insurance fraud, he’ll walk out free and proud.

Mike Tyson and Marion “The Bitch Set Me Up” Barry semi–got away with it. Tyson served three years for the sexual assault of a beauty-pageant contestant, but he scored $25 million in a 90-second comeback fight with a palooka; Barry served six months for an infamous crack possession, then was reelected mayor of Washington. “Get over it,” he told old-school moralists. Clarence Thomas mostly got away with it (his nomination to the Supreme Court confirmed, so able to deal a lethal blow to affirmative action, but left deeply embittered). And now Michael Jackson has totally gotten away with a reported payment of $15 million to the family of the boy he allegedly molested. Given the singer’s wealth, this is less a punishment than a tip.

In our gorgeous mosaic, any member of a historically disadvantaged group who can afford to hire Johnnie Cochran should now feel free to run amok. Bully for Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell if he decides to strangle a few liberals to prove his new GOP bona fides. If autograph seekers pester Hideo Nomo, he has our permission to club them like baby seals. And Stephen Hawking — cowabunga!

Instituting the Cochran standard carries little downside, as most of these rich guys have only one or two or three or four spectacular crimes in them. How likely is it, really, that William Kennedy Smith, now a physician with a special interest in fetal-alcohol syndrome, would get another chance to employ his seduction techniques at one of the family compounds? The old “I’m a Kennedy, you should try it” line has pretty much lost its appeal. And the chance that former U.N. secretary-general Kurt Waldheim would join another Nazi unit that commits atrocities in Yugoslavia is near zero, as he’s almost 80 and the Yugoslavs want younger, more vigorous soldiers to commit their atrocities. Nor can Lyle and Erik Menendez kill any more of their parents, as they’re in jail and, for that matter, orphaned.

And I think we all feel pretty confident that O.J. will be too busy chatting with Larry King, making infotainment deals, and assembling enemies lists to butcher anyone else like a pig in a slaughterhouse. The only ticklish scenario would be if curvy nude model Paula Barbieri makes him really, really mad by, say, disagreeing with him in public, talking to another man in the checkout line, or growing old and wrinkly. And if I were her, I wouldn’t.
