There are thirty-five hotspots around the world, which supports 43% of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians as endemic. The IUCN has compiled a list of species and has classified the different species under extinct, critically endangered, less endangered, vulnerable, near threatened, and least concerned. This list is called the Red Data Book. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the number of birds, animals, marine and freshwater creatures has dropped by almost one-third of its earlier population.

Causes for Decline or Threat to Wildlife

One of the major reasons for the constant decline of wildlife is human’s ever-increasing demands and greed that have led to deforestation and habitat destruction. For development and urbanization, man has chopped down trees to build dams, highways, and towns and this has forced the animals to retreat further and further into the receding forests.

Rapid industrialization and urbanization due to the fast growth in population in recent decades have taken a heavy toll on wildlife. Global warming and extensive environmental pollution have largely threatened wildlife as they lead to habitat destruction and rising temperature.

There is a huge demand for animal fur, skin, meat, bone, etc. across the globe that has led to a decrease in the wildlife population. Poachers kill the animals for the illegal trading of their body parts. For example, elephants are massively poached for ivory, rhinoceros are poached in Assam for their horns. The desire to keep animals in captivity or their desire to consume certain animals as exotic food has resulted in the disappearance of many animal species such as tigers and deer.

Forest fires, food shortage, increase in the number of predators, extreme weather conditions and other extraneous reasons have led to the extinction and endangerment of many species. For instance, the recent forest fires in the Amazon (Brazil), Uttarakhand (India), Australia, etc. lead to the death of many animals every year.

The protection and conservation of wildlife is the need of the hour. Some conservation efforts which are widely implemented are given below:

Afforestation:

First and most importantly, humans need to have control over their needs. We need to prevent man from felling trees unnecessarily. Trees should be replanted if they are felled.

Pollution is one of the major causes that have led to the destruction of the habitat of animal species. Pollution of the environment like air pollution, water pollution, and soil pollution hurts the entire ecosystem. It has become of utmost importance to control environmental pollution.

More campaigns must be launched to raise awareness in humans on the need to keep our environment clean. A man should be responsible to maintain a healthy and balanced ecosystem so they should be cordial with the environment. More organizations like PETA should be set up to create awareness among people for the protection of wildlife.

Population:

The man should consciously put a check on the rapid growth of the population. The slow growth of population will decrease the rate of urbanization and that will have a major impact on the preservation of wildlife.

Wildlife Sanctuaries:

Wildlife sanctuaries should be made to ensure the protection of the areas of ecological significance. Under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 various provisions for protecting habitats of wildlife are made by constructing national parks and sanctuaries. These parks and sanctuaries ensure the protection and maintenance of endangered species.

Ban of Illegal Activities:

Illegal activities like hunting, poaching, and killing animals, birds, etc. for collections and illegal trade of hides, skins, nails, teeth, horns, feathers, etc. should be strictly prohibited and severe punishments and fines should be imposed on people who do these kinds of activities.

Community initiatives

Communities come together to take various conservation initiatives such as the establishment of community forests, raising their voice against illegal activities, creating awareness among the masses, raising voice for the rights of the animals, conserving animals of cultural significance, and many more. For example, members of the Bishnoi community of Rajasthan are very vocal against poaching activities in the region.    

Many countries have taken the initiative to help animals by proclaiming various birds and animals either as national animals or as protected species. In India, the government has launched a program of Joint Forest Management to protect the wildlife and their habitat. Under this program, responsibilities have been assigned to the village communities to protect and manage nearby forests and the wildlife in them.  Animal species have the right to live just like humans. The need for wildlife conservation results from how human beings are altering lifestyles and advancing ways of living. The massive clearing of trees and forests is causing the habitats of wildlife to be destroyed. The mass extinction of wildlife species is the result of human beings' careless actions. Poaching and hunting are illegal activities; no animal may be killed for recreational purposes.

Wild animals and plants crucially maintain the ecological balance. They have to be considered necessary. The threat to wildlife comes from a variety of sources. Significant factors contributing to the decline of animals include rising pollution, climatic changes, resource overuse, irregular hunting and poaching, habitat degradation, etc. The government has created and modified a large number of laws and regulations aimed at protecting animals.

As we know, deforestation is a huge problem when we speak of wildlife conservation. Trees and forests are home to numerous animals and birds. Thus we need to plant more trees and stop cutting them as well. My school has recently decided to plant trees near our school area, which is empty. This might be a small initiative, but we need to have more afforestation so that it can have a significant impact and help us conserve wildlife.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic: Recently published figures show that the wildlife population around the world has decreased by around fifty per cent over the last fifty years. What can we do to help protect the wildlife round the world?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Humans have become a prime culprit for the destruction of the wildlife population around the world. Humans believe that they are the most powerful species on this planet and have therefore chosen to use all of nature’s resources for their own good, even if this results in the destruction of the environment around them. Clearly, this is not a positive result of human existence and many people believe that the world’s wildlife population should be better protected.

One possible way to protect wildlife around the world is to reduce the amount of polluted substances produced through the human way of life. It has become habitual for people to pollute water by adding chemicals to it during industrial processes or to pollute air as a result of the fossil fuel industries and car emissions. Stopping the addition of chemicals to water and creating cleaner processes would reduce water pollution and help create a safer environment for wildlife to live in. Increasing the availability and use of public transportation and increasing the use of renewable energy sources could reduce world pollution further.

Another possible attempt to protect wildlife around the world is to actively promote recycling projects to reduce the amount of resources that are wasted. This would lessen the degradation of the natural environment, as humans continue to search for new resources. Society uses a lot of paper and wood on a daily basis and people do not actively think about whether or not they are wasting these resources. Printing double-sided or on recycled paper for example would appear to change nothing, yet if carried out regularly would help make a difference.

In conclusion, there are numerous different ways in which every human being can help to protect the wildlife population around the world. One can engage in projects to raise awareness of environmental destruction or one can actively take part in activities to protect it. Everyone must find the area in which he or she would like to involve him or herself, as all should be obliged to protect wildlife around the world.

I can see in the first paragraph there is no paraphrasing, and still it is band 9. Some people say paraphrasing is essential in first paragraph , and most of the people don’t paraphrase and write some other things. What is the best and acceptable approach , to me, it is a mystery

Paraphrasing is for those who do not have other knowledge or idea about the topic but if one have extra knowledge can start with that but it should not be out of context.

Yes sir , I also feel it’s out of way . Your answer is how to save environment. But question is how to save wild life.

If you look in body paragraph 1, there is a clear reason for preserving the environment – so that wildlife will have somewhere to live. I am referring to this sentence: “Stopping the addition of chemicals to water and creating cleaner processes would reduce water pollution and help create a safer environment for wildlife to live in.”

God has created a beautiful earth for us. He has also given us a beautiful life so that we can spend this life by staying happy and do good work.

Every creature present on this earth has been given a life. This does not mean only the life of a human being matters. There is nothing as such.

The life of all the animals, birds, insects, microorganisms, plants and trees equally matter on this earth to the life of a human being. We should try to understand that life of all creatures is important.

This is because only if we know about it the relationship among all the creatures living on this earth is proper and balanced, only then the environment will be safe and stable for us.

Otherwise if there is no proper relationship among all the creatures the environment will not be stable. Moreover one’s life is connected to another.

If one’s life is getting hampered or disturbed, it will directly affect the other creature’s life. The life of all the creatures is a cycle because they are interconnected.

The birth, survival and death of even one type of creature will seriously affect the cycle of the environment.

All the creatures have their own life. We do not have the right to cut short their life or disturb their life.

They will survive as long as it is possible according to what God has planned for the nature. For example, different animals, birds and insects survive only for a specific amount of time.

After that they die. We cannot stop them from dying because ultimately everyone has to die one day. But we are no one to destroy their life.

Human beings specially need to understand that the animals, birds and insects are needed to maintain a stable environment.

Yes, they are helpful for us to survive but then even their life is also important just like ours. So, we cannot take away their life just like that.

Taking away their life is not so important compared to our jobs, family and other aspects of our life. If we do not consume them, we will not die. We will still manage to survive.   

The animals and bird are useful for human beings in various ways. They give us milk, eggs, fur and leather for clothes and boots.

They are also used for transportation purposes. In many places they are also used for recreational places. But is it necessary that we have to take away their life.

Even if we do not kill them, we will still survive. Even if they give us many benefits, we should do everything in limit. If we are taking away their life, it is our duty to do something for the betterment of their life.

Not only animals are important, but also birds, insects and the microorganisms are important as well.

All of them together constitute the wildlife. So, it is important to take care of every creature. Otherwise it will affect the constitution of both wildlife and environment.   

At the present day there are many national parks and wildlife sanctuaries all over the world. But if we notice properly the number of creatures has reduced a lot.

Nowadays we can see very less number of animals, bird and creatures in these parks and sanctuaries. Earlier the number was large and the earth’s environment was balanced. Even today it is balanced but not like before.

Sometimes it weighs more on one of the side. Earth will not remain as earth if there is no existence of wildlife. Human beings will have to suffer a lot if the wildlife does not exist.

This is because they are entirely dependent on them. Talking about the flora part, that is, the plants and trees, even they are facing problems like the living creatures. There are very less plants and trees at the present day.

They have faced a lot of destruction. This destruction has occurred because of the wants of human beings.

In order to fulfill their demands and wants, human beings have destroyed the flora of this earth. We can see deforestation in most of the places all over the world.

The count of the flora has gone down compared to before. More than the plants, trees and greenery, we see the modernized world. Humans have cut down the trees for their own living and shelter.

Instead of seeing the greenery or the plants and trees we can see more buildings, industries and human settlement all over the world. The human settlement has replaced the flora and fauna everywhere.

The wildlife has reduced all over the world. The present generation has seen very less of the wildlife. There are many plants, animals and bird which are not present today.

They existed perhaps when their grandparents or great grandparents or before them too were living on this earth.

Even the parents of today’s generation have seen more of wildlife than their children. There are many animals and birds that have become extinct.

The present generation comes to know about them only when they read about them or see clippings in books, museums etc. Otherwise they would not have known anything about those plants, animals and birds.

They can only see them in books and museums.

They will not be able to see many of them because most of them have become extinct or they are rarely found on this earth. Many of them are on the verge of becoming extinct or are already endangered.

We should save the wildlife from coming to an end, otherwise human beings will face a lot of problems. Their life will be greatly affected without the existence of wildlife.  

But what can we humans do to save the wildlife? We can do a lot of things in order to save the wildlife. It is just that we do not have a clear idea about how to do that.

The Government all over the world has taken various measures to save the wildlife in their own area.

In 1991, an international non-governmental organization was found to preserve the wildlife and reduce the impact of human on the environment.

This organization is known as World Wild Fund (WWF). The headquarters of this organization is situated at Gland in Switzerland.

The organization makes sure that the wildlife, that is, the flora and fauna is safe and the entire environment is healthy to preserve for the future generations as well.

This is important because if this is not controlled the future generation will not be able to know about the wildlife that are present today. They also focus on the negative activities of the human which affect the environment.

They try their level best to reduce the impact these negative activities cause to the environment and there is optimum use of the resources that are available on the earth.  

It is not only the responsibility of the Government to take the initiative of saving the wildlife. Even we can do that. We can reduce deforestation.

Instead take the responsibility of increasing afforestation.  We can help the government in giving information about the number and growth of wildlife.

There should be rules and regulations on hunting the animals and birds. We should not destroy the natural habitat of the wildlife. There are many species which are very rarely found and their number is limited.

Special care must be taken of these animals. Many people are involved in exporting and importing the products from wildlife.

Such people should be punished so that they do not harm the wildlife and also so that they learn a lesson for getting themselves involved in such activity.

All the people must be made aware about not destroying the wildlife and instead protect the wildlife.

There should be control management to take care of the wildlife. The people who are given the responsibility of this management must be properly trained.

There must be a few senior officials to keep a check on them as well so that they do not do any illegal activities.   

Thus, it is everyone’s responsibility to save the wildlife. Only one person alone cannot save the wildlife. We all need to come together and save the wildlife. If we do this it will help in the betterment of everyone present on the earth.

Synopsis :  Forests and wildlife are part and parcel of our precious and fragile environment and need protection and conservation  There are a couple of Acts which prohibit exploitation of endangered species of animals, birds den plants and yet the poachers are on the prowl and illegal hunting and killing of animals is being indulged in with impunity.  Because of fast shrinking forest-over and habitat come times wild animals like hyenas, tigers, wolves and leopards turn man-eaters and attack villages.  The large scale and indiscriminate destruction of forest has created a dangerous situation and alarm bells have started ringing.  Forests a swill life is very valuable and renewable sours of nature and need to be preserved protected and expanded at all costs.  Society forestry be practiced and popularized.  Depletion of forests also causes soil-erosion, floods, erratic rain-falls, droughts etc. More and more people, communities, tribal’s, non-government agencies etc. be involved in the work

            Protection and conservation of forests and wildlife are essential to maintain the earth’s health and environment.  The earth is the only known living planet and it is because of its special environment and ecology which are life-supporting.  Forests are part and parcel of our environment.  They are one of the most valuable resources and gifts of nature.  They play a key role in the maintenance of climate, rain-patterns, water and soil conservation.  They are the natural home of many types of animals, birds, reptiles, insects tic. They supply timber, fuel, medicines, wood for paper pulp and raw materials for many industries.  The increasing depletion and destruction of wildlife is a sauce of great concern.  On out of every seven persons of the world live in India. India has 16 per cent of the world’s population with only 2.4 per cent of its land area. 

            India is very rich both in flora and fauna but many plant and animal species are already extinct and many other are on the road to extinction.  In spite of various acts and rules-regulations against exploitation of wildlife, the real conservation has still a long way to cover.  India is a huge country and one of the major wildlife producer countries of the world and yet there is a skeleton staff to safeguard the interest of wildlife.  Poachers are on the prowl even in sanctuaries and protected forest areas.  They have become fertile influential people and traders in animal-skins, horns, etc.

            There is mindless destruction of forests for timber, firewood and fuel.  Every year there is a loss of about 1.3 hectares of forest areas in India because of large and indiscriminate clearing of forests fro cultivation, quarrying and large dams and irrigation projects.  Then there is intensive and indiscriminate logging for commercial purposes contractors and timber-merchants.  Over-grazing has also taken its toll.  The result is serious ecological imbalance and environment degradation.  There is much pressure on forests and the relation between men and forests has reached the lowest depth.

            The destruction and degradation of forests in upper regions like Himalayas causes such other ruins as erosion of top soil, erratic rainfall, and recurring floods.  Deforestation is a gate social and national evil and should be checked on priority basis.  It results in loss of productivity and environment degradation among much other harm.  Encroachment on forests should also be checked and, if possible, banned.  Non-government agencies, village communities, tribal’s etc. should be involved in social forestry and regeneration of degraded forest lands.  They should be allowed to share the benefits of these schemes in a judicious manner.  The forest and wildlife conservation laws shoals be made more stringent and practiced scrupulously.  Veerappan’s continued bloody trade in ivory and sandal-wood trade upsets all concerned.  Through the Nilgiris, it is now almost impossible to spot a large tusker.  The full clown assault on forest and wifely saddens all the Indians and wildlife lover in foreign countries.

Endangered Species

Endangered species are living things whose population is so reduced that they are threatened with extinction. Thousands of species are included in this category. The International Union for the Conservation of nature and Natural Resources published a list of threatened mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and plants. Plants and animals hold medicinal, agricultural, ecological, commercial and aesthetic/recreational value. Endangered species must be protected and saved so that future generations can experience their presence and value. Millions of years before the birth of humans, extinction of living things was linked to geological and clii-nae, the effects of which were translated into major alternation of the environment. Environmental change is still the primary cause of the extinction of animals, but now the changes are greatly accelerated by human’s activity. Clearing land for farms and towns, lumbering, mining, building dams, and draining wetlands all alter the environments so extensively that ecosystems may be completely destroyed. With a burgeoning human population requiring food, shelter, and clothing and constantly demanding more energy-using devices, the temperation to exploit land for human use without regard for

consequences is great. Frequently, several forms of environmental change are responsible for the disappearance of species. For example, as tropical forests are cut down, primates have progressively smaller feeding and living spaces’. They also become more accessible to hunters, who kill animals for food and trap many primates for sale as pets, research animals,  and zoo specimens.

Some animal species may move into human communities when their own are destroyed. Extermination of marauding monkeys, roaming tigers, or foraging deer is easy to justify by people whose livelihood is threatened. Pollution is another form of environmental change. Forty species of birds in the United States, including peregrine hawk, bald eagle, pelicans, and roseate terns, lay thin-shelled as a result of ingesting degradation products of and some other chlorination hydrocarbon insecticides that make their way into the food chain. Species of salamanders in New England are dying out because the ponds in which they breed and the moist soil in which they must live are watered by acid rain (water that combines with pollutants in the air to form acid, sulfuric acid, and other corrosive compounds). Industrial waste dumped in the Mediterranean have so depleted the oxygen supply that some species of bacteria that decompose sewage have been wiped out and the nutrient cycles disturbed. Even the ocean environment has been altered by dumping. There are several species of birds and animals that have been exterminated or endangered as a result of humans killing the individuals for food. The Hawaiian state bird has also become extinct. The 22 finds of clams and 30 kinds of fish imperiled in the United States are probably all endangered by varying combinations of naturally changing environments, Pollution and over-harvesting. Whale are also on the endangered list. Whale hunting is often justified as supplying a

source of protein for protein-poor populations. Actually, whales supply only 1% of the protein needs of any countries, Such as  Japan, that is actively engaged in whaling. In the Soviet Union , whale meat is used to feed animals that are raised for their Pelts such as sable and mink.

Students Are Likely Writing Millions of Papers With AI

Students have submitted more than 22 million papers that may have used generative AI in the past year, new data released by plagiarism detection company Turnitin shows.

A year ago, Turnitin rolled out an AI writing detection tool that was trained on its trove of papers written by students as well as other AI-generated texts. Since then, more than 200 million papers have been reviewed by the detector, predominantly written by high school and college students. Turnitin found that 11 percent may contain AI-written language in 20 percent of its content, with 3 percent of the total papers reviewed getting flagged for having 80 percent or more AI writing. (Turnitin is owned by Advance, which also owns Condé Nast, publisher of WIRED.) Turnitin says its detector has a false positive rate of less than 1 percent when analyzing full documents.

ChatGPT’s launch was met with knee-jerk fears that the English class essay would die . The chatbot can synthesize information and distill it near-instantly—but that doesn’t mean it always gets it right. Generative AI has been known to hallucinate , creating its own facts and citing academic references that don’t actually exist. Generative AI chatbots have also been caught spitting out biased text on gender and race . Despite those flaws, students have used chatbots for research, organizing ideas, and as a ghostwriter . Traces of chatbots have even been found in peer-reviewed, published academic writing .

Teachers understandably want to hold students accountable for using generative AI without permission or disclosure. But that requires a reliable way to prove AI was used in a given assignment. Instructors have tried at times to find their own solutions to detecting AI in writing, using messy, untested methods to enforce rules , and distressing students. Further complicating the issue, some teachers are even using generative AI in their grading processes.

Detecting the use of gen AI is tricky. It’s not as easy as flagging plagiarism, because generated text is still original text. Plus, there’s nuance to how students use gen AI; some may ask chatbots to write their papers for them in large chunks or in full, while others may use the tools as an aid or a brainstorm partner.

Students also aren't tempted by only ChatGPT and similar large language models. So-called word spinners are another type of AI software that rewrites text, and may make it less obvious to a teacher that work was plagiarized or generated by AI. Turnitin’s AI detector has also been updated to detect word spinners, says Annie Chechitelli, the company’s chief product officer. It can also flag work that was rewritten by services like spell checker Grammarly, which now has its own generative AI tool . As familiar software increasingly adds generative AI components, what students can and can’t use becomes more muddled.

Detection tools themselves have a risk of bias. English language learners may be more likely to set them off; a 2023 study found a 61.3 percent false positive rate when evaluating Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exams with seven different AI detectors. The study did not examine Turnitin’s version. The company says it has trained its detector on writing from English language learners as well as native English speakers. A study published in October found that Turnitin was among the most accurate of 16 AI language detectors in a test that had the tool examine undergraduate papers and AI-generated papers.

Schools that use Turnitin had access to the AI detection software for a free pilot period, which ended at the start of this year. Chechitelli says a majority of the service’s clients have opted to purchase the AI detection. But the risks of false positives and bias against English learners have led some universities to ditch the tools for now. Montclair State University in New Jersey announced in November that it would pause use of Turnitin’s AI detector. Vanderbilt University and Northwestern University did the same last summer.

“This is hard. I understand why people want a tool,” says Emily Isaacs, executive director of the Office of Faculty Excellence at Montclair State. But Isaacs says the university is concerned about potentially biased results from AI detectors, as well as the fact that the tools can’t provide confirmation the way they can with plagiarism. Plus, Montclair State doesn’t want to put a blanket ban on AI, which will have some place in academia. With time and more trust in the tools, the policies could change. “It’s not a forever decision, it’s a now decision,” Isaacs says.

Chechitelli says the Turnitin tool shouldn’t be the only consideration in passing or failing a student. Instead, it’s a chance for teachers to start conversations with students that touch on all of the nuance in using generative AI. “People don’t really know where that line should be,” she says.

Degree - This is the academic degree you are receiving. Your major is in addition to the degree; it can be added to the phrase or written separately.  Include the full name of your degree, major(s), minor(s), emphases, and certificates on your resume.

Gig workers are writing essays for AI to learn from

• Companies are hiring highly educated gig workers to write training content for AI models .
• The shift toward more sophisticated trainers comes as tech giants scramble for new data sources.
• AI could run out of data to learn from by 2026, one research institute has warned. 

As artificial intelligence models run out of data to train themselves on, AI companies are increasingly turning to actual humans to write training content.

For years, companies have used gig workers to help train AI models on simple tasks like photo identification , data annotation, and labelling. But the rapidly advancing technology now requires more advanced people to train it.

Companies such as Scale AI and Surge AI are hiring part-timers with graduate degrees to write essays and creative prompts for the bots to gobble up, The New York Times reported . Scale AI, for example, posted a job last year looking for people with Master's degrees or PhDs, who are fluent in either English, Hindi, or Japanese and have professional writing experience in fields like poetry, journalism, and publishing.

Their mission? To help AI bots "become better writers," Scale AI wrote in the posting.

And an army of workers are needed to do this kind of work. Scale AI has as many as tens of thousands of contractors working on its platform at a time, per the Times.

"What really makes the A.I. useful to its users is the human layer of data, and that really needs to be done by smart humans and skilled humans and humans with a particular degree of expertise and a creative bent," Willow Primack, the vice president of data operations at Scale AI, told the New York Times. "We have been focusing on contractors, particularly within North America, as a result."

The shift toward more sophisticated gig trainers comes as tech giants scramble to find new data to train their technology on. That's because the programs learn so incredibly fast that they're already running out of available resources to learn from. The vast trove of online information — everything from scientific papers to news articles to Wikipedia pages — is drying up.

Epoch, an AI research institute, has warned that AI could run out of data by 2026.

So, companies are finding more and more creative ways to make sure their systems never stop learning. Google has considered accessing its customers' data in Google Docs , Sheets, and Slides while Meta even thought about buying publishing house Simon & Schuster to harvest its book collection, Business Insider previously reported.
