Essay on My Father

List of essays on my father, essay on my father – my role model and my friend (essay 1 – 500 words), essay on my father – for kids and children (essay 2 – 750 words), essay on my father – long essay for school students (essay 3 – 800 words).

Audience: The below given essays are exclusively written for school students (Class 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Standard).

Introduction:

My father is my hero and guide in my life. He is the one I look upon whenever I find myself in trouble. My father has been my guiding force for all my major decisions in life. In fact, I have never regretted adhering to his advice as it has always worked for me. He is a hardworking and passionate person. My father has a love for movies. Whenever he gets time, he just loves to watch an old movie. In fact, at times we just fight as to who gets control of the television. But at heart, we love to tease each other and play as well.

My father does not like to sit idle. At times, on holidays if he finds me and my sister doing nothing and just idling our time, he gives us some task or the other. He is also much organised and keeps all his documents in a properly organised manner.

My Father – My Role Model:

My father is my role model for many reasons. First and foremost I admire his passion for work. That is why he is so respected in his office as well. He is always there to help his colleagues even if it is not his work. In fact, one can always see him spending weekends helping others out. Moreover, my father is a simple man. He does not like expensive things and lives an easy and peaceful life. Also, he never shouts on anyone of us. I wonder if he ever gets angry on anything as he takes everything so calmly and takes his time to decide upon things.

My Father – My Friend:

My father is my friend as well. I can discuss everything with my father, even those that I dare not speak in front of my mother. I know that he shall keep it a secret and give the advice I need. He is the one whom I can rely upon blindly during any hour of need, and I know that he shall be there for me.

Importance of My Father in My Life:

My father plays an important role in the family. He is in fact considered as the head of the family. However, I feel that both father and mother have a distinctive role to play in bringing up their children. While on hand my mother has s soft heart, it is my father who shows courage and strength which his children will later on imbibe as their qualities. He can be firm at times, but be rest assured it is always for the benefit of the children.

Conclusion:

There is no doubt that my father’s role is vital in my life. His presence is vital for maintaining the balance and peace in my family. A father is the one who earns the badge of the stricter parent and whose denial of permission for anything means a lot to the children. I also admire my father and try to imbibe his qualities so that I become like him when I grow up.

My father is a person who takes care of my family and loves each one of us dearly. My father acts as the pillar of support and strength for my family.

My father is the person that I admire the most in my life. I can never forget all the childhood memories that I have with him. It is safe for me to say that my father is largely the reason behind my present joy and happiness. I can say that I am the person who I am today and the person that I am growing to be, is all because of the influence he has had and is having on me. He always makes time to play with me and catch up on all the happenings in my life even after the hard work of the day.

My father is one man who is very unique and different. I always feel lucky anytime I remember that he is my father knowing how he has done the very best for me in life. I always feel grateful that I have the opportunity to be his son and be a part of a wonderful family that has a great father like him. My father has shown himself to be a very peaceful and polite person. He seldom scolds me and he is always easy with me. What he tries to do is that he makes sure that I realise the mistake that I have made in a very polite way and helps me to get better and this has been working like magic for many years now.

My father is the leader and head of our family. He is always there for every member of the family to help us in times when we need his advice and direction in taking decisions. Anytime we have a problem, we take it to him, he tries to help us by sharing some of the problems that he also faced in the past that are quite similar to our problem and how he was able to overcome them. He also shares all of his achievements and drawbacks in life and tells us to learn from them.

My father has his personal online marketing business but he never insists any of his children to pursue a career in that same field so that we can take over after him. He does not even try to attract any of us to his business but he tries to teach how we can discover our own passion and fields of interest in life. He does his best to encourage us in the pursuance of our various dreams. I can boldly say that my dad is a very good dad and this is not as a result of him always helping me and being nice to me but because he shows great strength, knowledge, a good helping and nice nature. He also owns very good human relations skills.

My father’s parents were very poor when he was growing up but with hard work and patience, my father was able to become very rich. He uses this as an example to encourage me to always work hard.

I share all of my happy, sad and bad moments with him and he also does the same. He is always around to share with me all of his life experiences and how I can learn from them. My father also tells me all about his day and every event that occurred during the day. He is doing all his best to ensure that I grow up to become a very successful person that has good character and behaviour.

My father always teaches me ethics, humanity and etiquettes of life that can help me in future. My father is always ready and willing to help the people who are needy around us and he tells us that giving is the most important thing in life. My father also teaches my siblings and me how to be happy, healthy and fit throughout our lives.

My father has shown himself to be very good to all the members of my extended family. If anyone of us is facing a particular problem, my father is usually the first person we go to for advice and help. My father has over the years proven to be a person who has a very kind heart and I can boldly say that he is my best friend and my hero.

About My Father:

Appa was born in Coimbatore, the second son and third child in a family of 11 children. His father, my grandfather was a stern man, a respected civil engineer who worked for the colonial British government.

Appa attended the Rishi Valley School in Yercaud, founded on the learning philosophy of Jiddu Krishnamurthy. There he learned the value of discipline, respect for hard work, honesty, responsibility and constant learning. He studied electrical engineering at Banaras Hindu University and went on to join Voltas Limited’s air conditioning division. He worked there the rest of his life, and was regarded as brilliant and a genius.

My childhood memories of him are as a stern, strict and not very communicative man. He’d crack the most unhumorous Dad jokes and we’d all grimace and laugh dutifully.

He felt a deep and abiding sense of responsibility towards his own family of birth as well as his marital family. The modest salary he always earned would be divided between these two families, and since he was terrible at currying favour or promoting himself, he never rose within the ranks of Voltas and his income remained quite pathetic till he died. This officially made us a lower-middle class family and our childhoods were frugal, thrifty and austere. A little money meant a lot.

Despite these constraints, Appa planned our futures successfully. When his provident funds were released after his retirement, he used the entire amount, augmented by a bank loan, to buy a house in his two sons’ names. For the rest of our lives, we had a roof over our heads.

Why I like my father:

One of the most remarkable things about Appa was the number of things he was interested in. In Calcutta, he would spend hours outside a tailor’s shop watching him make clothes. After several months, he bought himself a Singer sewing machine. From then, all our clothes, including winter school uniforms, were stitched by him.

He taught himself carpentry — and constructed the sofa sets we used for decades.

He learned dry cleaning — and from then, we would go to school smelling of kerosene in winter.

He was an outstanding cook, and loved cooking. When my mother was immobilized with lymphatic TB, he’d cook breakfast, lunch and dinner for the family in the morning before leaving for work.

Best of all, he was a brilliant musician, gifted in playing the vichitra veena. He had his own Carnatic ‘band’ with a flutist and a mridangam player.

Things I Learned from My Father:

I have slowly realised how much of who I am was shaped by who he was. Like him, I never get bored, and remain fascinated by everything in life. I’m constantly active doing something constructive or educational. I am today two years younger than he was when he died but have started learning to play piano, understand search engine optimisation, UX design and painting.

I learned from him that generosity is a state of mind, not a state of wallet. The number of nameless, faceless poor people he had helped was long, as we learned only after he died. Never demeaning his beneficiaries with a handout, he invited them to repay at their time and speed, but made sure that they did, thus restoring their self-respect.

Without ever speaking about it, he has shown me what it means to be a father, and the meaning of selfless living.

A single incident sums up my relationship with my dad. He wanted me to join the IIT and become an engineer. I wanted to be a writer, a profession he disdained as having no future. Headstrong, in 1969, I stepped out of the train in which my family was relocating from Delhi to Bombay just as the whistle blew. I was bent on living my life my way.

My father, deeply upset, cut me off without a paisa, saying I could jolly well support myself if I was so confident about writing. And so I did, earning enough through writing for the evening papers to pay my rent, college fees and food. Six months later, my father, passing through Delhi in December, visited me to check how his strong-headed son was doing, and saw for himself that I was surviving well enough without borrowing or begging. He visibly swelled with pride.

He hugged me, in one action forgiving me but also forgiving himself. He used the 400 rupees he had received as a Christmas bonus to buy me utensils, a mattress, and other basics.

From that day, he would proudly say, “My son followed his heart rather than my head — and see what a fine job he has done.”

So, start the essay on my father…

Essay on My Father (1000+ Words)

Typically, people speak of mother’s love and appreciation, and often overlook the father’s attention. Mother’s love is talked extensively around anywhere, in film, in series, and much more.

What we fail to recognize, though, is the power of a parent who always gets overlooked. My father is a gift which not many citizens see in their lives.

It’d be incorrect to assume that every dad is the perfect hero for his kids, and it is not the case. However, I will voucher for my dad without even any second thoughts until it comes to becoming an ideal man.

How different is my father?

As everyone wants to assume that their father is exceptional, so do me. However, this belief is not purely based on the passion I have for him but also on his character.

My father has a company and is very diligent in all facets of life. My father is one of those who told me to exercise still professionalism, no matter what kind of work I do.

Most notably, he has a pleasant disposition and always makes my mom laugh with his dumb shenanigans, and after 27 months of the relationship.

I totally enjoy this dumb side of him when he’s around his relatives. He does his hardest to satisfy all our desires, but he still retains strictness whenever the need arises.

My childhood memories about him are a stern, strict, or not very conversational man. He would crack its most funny jokes of Dad, and we’ll all laugh and smile.

He felt a persevering and robust sense of obligation for his own birth family and also his marital ones.

The meager paycheck that he always received would be shared between such two families, so when he was bad in currying favor or supporting himself, my father did not rise inside the ranks, so his profits remained very mirage until he passed.

This formally made us a low-income family, so our childhoods were thrifty, frugal, and austere. A little bit of money mattered a lot.

In spite of these limitations, my father has effectively prepared our futures. If his provident money was released during his retirement, he used the whole sum, plus a personal loan, to purchase a home and in the name of his young son. We had a roof above our heads and for the remainder of our days.

Why do I like my father?

Among the most amazing aspects of my father was the number of things he was involved in.

He’d spend hours from outside the tailor’s shop seeing him making shirts, and within a few months, he purchased himself the Singer sewing machine. From that day forward, all our clothing, along with the winter school uniforms, were sewn by him.

He taught himself carpentry and designed the sofa sets that we’ve been using for generations.

He got to learn dry cleaning and then after that, in winter, we did go to school smelling kerosene.

My father was a great chef, so he enjoyed the food. While my mother was immobilized by lymphatic TB, she must have prepared breakfast, lunch, or dinner for her family and in the morning until heading off to work.

Best of everyone, he was a talented guitarist, blessed with the vichitra veena. He had a Carnatic’ band’ of his own with such a flautist as well as a mridangam player.

Things I learned from my father

Slowly, I learned how much more of how I was influenced by who he is and. Like him, I’m never tired, so I’m always intrigued by everything else in my life.

I’m still interested in doing something positive or educational. I’m 2 two years younger now than he was while he died, so I began to learn how to play piano, appreciate search engine optimization, UX design, or drawing.

I heard from him every kindness is a frame of mind, not a wallet condition. The amount of nameless, faceless poor folks my father supported was long, which we heard only when he passed.

Never demeaning the recipients with such a handout, he encouraged them to reimburse at their pace and time but made saying they actually so, preserving their self-respect.

Without even talking about it, he taught me what something means to become a parent, and what it means to become a lifeless person.

My father as the source of motivation

I can proudly say that this was my father, who was the source of my inspiration since day one. In those other words, his outlook and personality influenced me together like a human.

About the same way, he still has a huge effect on the environment inside his own little ways. My father dedicates his spare time to have to take care of stray animals that encourage me to be doing the same thing.

My father has told me the essence of love in the shape of a rose that he gives to my mother every day without fail. This continuity and devotion encourage us all to handle them in the same manner.

All my experience in sports or vehicles, I’ve come from my dad. This is one of the few reasons why I want to be a cricket player in the future.

10 Lines on my father

  • He is a caring and obliging man who takes care of my whole family.
  • He is a talented engineer or a very hard-working individual.
  • He’s an articulate guy who answers all the questions smartly.
  • My father loves his own family, my mother, or every member of the family.
  • He retains a cordial relationship with our family, acquaintances, and colleagues.
  • He’s going to bring my sister or me to college or my mother for work every day.
  • Every day, he supports my younger sister in our studies and me.
  • He shows us proper manners , compassion, and the ethic of living.
  • My dad is my role model, and one day I want to be around him.
  • My father is, or is always, a huge inspiration to me.

My friendship with my father is summed up by a single occurrence. He wanted me to attend the IIT for becoming an engineer.

I decided to become a novelist, a career he disdained to have no future. Headstrong, in 1969, I left the train wherein my family moved via Delhi to Bombay even as the whistle sounded. I’ve been bent on enjoying my way of life.

My father, profoundly upset, cut me over without a country, saying that I should really help myself whether I was so optimistic about writing. But so did I, raising enough by writing night papers to cover my lease, college tuition, or food.

Six months later, my dad, moving via Delhi in December, met me to see how his powerful-headed son would do and saw that I had lived quite well without borrowing and asking. He was clearly swelled with pride.

My father hugged me, forgave me for one moment, used 400 rupees as a Christmas bonus to buy me utensils, a mattress, and other essentials.

Since that day on, he could happily say, “My son pursued his heart more than my head – see what a great job he did.”

500 Words Essay On My Favourite Personality

My father is my favourite personality. He has been a constant source of inspiration and guidance in my life. He is a man of great integrity and a hard worker who has always led by example. He is the one who taught me the importance of honesty, responsibility and the value of hard work.

I remember a real-life incident from my childhood that perfectly illustrates the kind of person my father is. When I was around 10 years old, my family and I were on a trip to a nearby city. We were shopping in a mall when I saw a toy that I really wanted. I begged my father to buy it for me, but he refused, saying that we had already spent enough money on the trip. I was disappointed, but I didn't understand why he was being so strict.

After we left the mall, my father took me aside and explained that we didn't have a lot of money, and that every purchase we made needed to be carefully considered. He said that he didn't want me to grow up thinking that I could always have whatever I wanted, and that I needed to learn the value of money. I didn't fully understand at the time, but I knew that my father was trying to teach me an important lesson.

Years later, as I grew older and started to understand more about the world and about money, I realized how wise my father's decision had been. He had taught me the importance of being responsible with money, and had helped me to develop a sense of financial literacy that has served me well throughout my life.

My father has always been there for me, providing guidance and support whenever I needed it. He has taught me the importance of being a good person, of treating others with respect, and of always doing the right thing, even when it's difficult. He is a true role model, and I am so grateful to have him as my father.

In addition to being an amazing father, my dad is also an incredible husband and provider for our family. He always puts his family first and works hard to make sure that we have everything we need. He is a great listener and always has wise advice to offer when I am struggling with something. He is a great cook and loves to spend time in the kitchen experimenting with new recipes. He is also a fitness enthusiast and encourages us to stay active and healthy. He is always the first one up in the morning, ready to start his day and the last one to go to bed. He is truly a selfless and dedicated person who always puts the needs of his family before his own.

One of the things that I admire most about my father is his work ethic. He is a businessman and runs his own company. He works incredibly hard to ensure the success of his business and to provide for our family. He is always willing to go the extra mile to ensure that his clients are satisfied, and he is highly respected in the business community. He taught me the importance of hard work and perseverance and that nothing comes easy.

My father is also an incredibly compassionate and caring person. He has always been involved in various social causes and volunteer work. He has always been passionate about helping those in need and making a positive difference in the world. He taught me that with privilege comes responsibility and that we have a duty to use our resources and abilities to help others.

In conclusion, my father is my favourite personality because he is a true role model and an inspiration to me. He has taught me so many valuable lessons throughout my life, and I am forever grateful to him for his guidance, support and love. He is the reason why I am who I am today, and I am so proud to call him my father.

Personification of Resilience

My father’s resilience is one of his most inspiring qualities. He grew up in a low-income family, with limited access to education and opportunities. However, he never let these adversities define him. Instead, he used them as stepping stones, working relentlessly to rise above his circumstances. His journey from a small village to a successful professional is a testament to his indomitable spirit.

500 Words Essay on My Father Is My Hero

In the vast panorama of human relationships, the bond between a father and his child holds a special place. It is a bond that transcends the mundane, reaching into the realm of the profound. My father, an embodiment of strength, wisdom, and love, is my hero. His life, a testament to resilience and dedication, has been my guiding light, illuminating my path towards growth and self-discovery.

My Father, the Pillar of Strength

My father’s resilience in the face of adversity is awe-inspiring. He grew up in an impoverished family, where every day was a struggle for survival. Yet, instead of succumbing to despair, he used these challenges as stepping stones towards a better future. His unwavering determination and relentless pursuit of his dreams taught me the importance of resilience. He showed me that life’s adversities are not roadblocks but stepping stones towards success.

My Father, the Beacon of Wisdom

My father’s wisdom, gleaned from years of experience and a ceaseless quest for knowledge, has been my compass in the journey of life. He taught me to question, to seek, and to never settle for the ordinary. His wisdom transcends bookish knowledge, delving into the realm of life’s deeper truths. Through his guidance, I learned to appreciate the beauty of questioning, the thrill of discovery, and the joy of learning.

My Father, the Embodiment of Love

Despite his many roles – a provider, a mentor, a protector – my father’s most significant role has been that of a loving parent. His love is not the ostentatious kind, filled with grand gestures and extravagant gifts. Instead, it is a quiet, steady flame that warms and illuminates. His love is seen in his sacrifices, his patience, and his unwavering faith in my potential. It’s a love that empowers, nurtures, and inspires.

My Father, My Hero

A hero is someone who inspires through their actions, someone who leads by example, and someone who makes a difference. My father, with his strength, wisdom, and love, fits this definition perfectly. He is my hero, not because he is infallible, but because he taught me that it is our imperfections that make us human. He is my hero, not because he never fell, but because he always got back up. He is my hero, not because he achieved great things, but because he showed me that the journey is more important than the destination.

In the grand narrative of my life, my father is the hero who continues to inspire and guide me. His life, a symphony of strength, wisdom, and love, resonates within me, shaping my thoughts, my actions, and my dreams. As I navigate the labyrinth of life, I am grateful for the beacon that is my father, my hero.

Chicago Cubs v Atlanta Braves

It’s another Wednesday at BCB After Dark: the swinging spot for night owls, early risers, new parents and Cubs fans abroad. So glad that you stopped by this evening. We’re all in a better mood today than we were the past two nights. There’s no cover charge this evening. The dress code is casual. Let the hostess seat you tonight. Bring your own beverage.

BCB After Dark is the place for you to talk baseball, music, movies, or anything else you need to get off your chest, as long as it is within the rules of the site. The late-nighters are encouraged to get the party started, but everyone else is invited to join in as you wake up the next morning and into the afternoon.

The Cubs avoided the sweep tonight and beat the Braves, 7-1. Javier Assad just continues to impress. Mike Tauchman set the tone with a first-pitch home run. And Pete Crow-Armstrong? More on him later.

Last night I asked you if you thought Christopher Morel would make the All-Star Game this year. Maybe I should have thought of a better question because 88 percent of you said “no.”

Here’s the part of the show where we talk about jazz and movies. You can skip these parts if you want. You won’t hurt my feelings.

One last tribute to David Sanborn tonight as we continue to mourn his passing. I’ve often found great jazz clips to show here from Sanborn’s Night Music show that ran in the late-eighties. So tonight, from 1989, we have Sanborn playing a supporting role to one of his guests—the all-time great saxophonist Sonny Rollins. This is “Kim.”

I may have mentioned that I’ve been busy this week. So tonight’s film essay is going to be about a 17-minute film from 2006 entitled My Dad is 100 Years Old. The film is directed by legendary Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin and was written by and stars Isabella Rossellini. Rossellini made this film as a tribute to her father, the great Italian director Roberto Rossellini, to honor him on what would have been his 100th birthday.

I’ve only seen a couple of Guy Maddin films, but the ones I have seen are avant-garde, visually interesting and a lot more charming than you’d expect. Maddin generally shoots in a style that borrows from silent movies and early talkies of the 1920s and ‘30s. There are lots of quick-cut imagery and odd and distorted camera angles. His films somewhat resemble the work of David Lynch, but on a smaller and more intimate scale. I want to see more of his work.

My Dad is 100 Years Old is certainly in that style. But mostly, this is Isabella Rossellini’s movie. She wrote the script and she’s the only actor who appears on screen, playing multiple parts. She made this film because she thought the memory of her father, and his movies, were fading from public knowledge.

Rossellini starts with her favorite memories of her father—not as a filmmaker, but as a loving dad. In particular, she has a fond memory of her father’s big belly and finding comfort and love by lying on his stomach. So the part of Roberto Rossellini is played by a fat man’s naked belly in My Dad is 100 Years Old. We never see a head or any limbs. Just a big belly in black and white. Isabella provides her dad’s voice herself.

Much of the film is a debate about the nature of cinema and the meaning of Roberto Rossellini’s films. Isabella plays David O. Selznick, Federico Fellini, Alfred Hitchcock and Charlie Chaplin as they argue with Roberto about what film means. She uses the words of the filmmakers themselves to help create this dialog. Isabella doesn’t come to any conclusions about who is right or wrong here—it’s mostly a device to show what her father was like and what he cared about.

Eventually, Isabella comes out as her mother, Ingrid Bergman, to talk more about her father the person, husband and father. And then she speaks as herself about what her dad means to her.

My Dad is 100 Years Old is a lovely movie. While it looks avant-garde, at its heart it is a famous actress writing a love letter to her famous director father. Isabella Rossellini is clearly trying to understand her father better as a person—warts and all. And she’d like you to understand him better too. Maybe watch his films as well. There’s a clip of the most famous scene from Rome, Open City in the movie, which leads to a discussion of her father’s relationship with that films star, Anna Magnani. That’s the woman her father dumped to marry Isabella’s mother.

But instead of my telling you more about My Dad is 100 Years Old , why don’t you just watch it for yourself? Here it is. Isabella Rossellini herself has uploaded the entire thing on to YouTube. It’s worth 17 minutes of your life.

Tonight’s question concerns one of the heroes of tonight’s win over the Braves, rookie outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong. Crow-Armstrong drove in a run in the first inning after he was hit with a pitch with the bases loaded. He had a terrific RBI bunt single in the fifth inning. And then he tripled to left-center field in the eighth inning—going from home to third base in 11.01 seconds. That’s the fastest time in the majors on a triple this season.

After tonight’s 2 for 4 game, Crow-Armstrong is hitting .255/.316/.392. That’s not great, but it’s an OPS about league average. Crow-Armstrong is already the best defensive center fielder in the majors right now. If you can get around average offensive production out of a center fielder with elite defense, that’s a valuable player.

When the Cubs called up Pete Crow-Armstrong from Triple-A Iowa on April 24, they told him that he would go back down to Iowa when the regular outfielders got healthy. Well, Seiya Suzuki and Cody Bellinger are healthy again and Crow-Armstrong is still with the major league club. Now yes, Dansby Swanson went on the IL which kept a spot open for Crow-Armstrong. But Swanson’s an infielder.

Tonight’s question is simply “Does Pete Crow-Armstrong see Iowa again this season?” I know the Cubs said they were sending him back down, but manager Craig Counsell sure seems to love him. No, Crow-Armstrong doesn’t start every game, but he seems to play every game, either as a defensive replacement or a pinch runner.

Of course, the Cubs have a lot of outfielders right now who also need to play. Cody Bellinger, Seiya Suzuki and Mike Tauchman are all playing well. Ian Happ isn’t, but Happ has enough of a track record that you have to think he’s going to snap out of it eventually. That makes Crow-Armstrong a fifth outfielder. Patrick Wisdom can also play outfield as well.

But in the days of the DH, maybe Counsell can find enough at-bats for five outfielders? If so, then maybe they keep Crow-Armstrong in the majors for his glove alone. And he certainly seems to be hitting better as he gets more used to major-league pitching.

Does Pete Crow-Armstrong go back down to Iowa this year?

Will Pete Crow-Armstrong play for Iowa again this season?

If Crow-Armstrong gets hurt and goes on a rehab assignment in Iowa, that doesn’t count for tonight’s purposes. Only if he gets demoted.

Thank you for stopping by this evening and all week. Special thanks goes out to those who voted and commented over the course of the week. Please get home safely. Call a ride if you need to. Recycle any cans or bottles you may have brought. Tip your waitstaff. And join us again next week for more BCB After Dark.

I was accepted to Yale. Here's everything I included in my successful Ivy League application.

  • I got into Yale University after submitting a successful college application.
  • I included my SAT score and high GPA in the application, along with an essay about my culture.
  • Ultimately, I tried to highlight all the ways I would be a benefit to the Yale community.

Insider Today

I recently reviewed my Yale admissions file after being a student there for three years. It was strange but enlightening to read what the admissions officers really thought of my application.

Since then, many people have respectfully requested to hear about my stats, extracurriculars , and essays.

I believe that everyone's college application journey is unique and that mine is just one sample, but I equally understand the urge to hear about other people's experiences. I devoured hundreds of college decision reactions on YouTube just three years ago, hoping to find that secret formula.

So, I'm now sharing a deeper look into my college application. But I want to first emphasize that as complicated and stressful as the process of applying to college may be, the best application you can ever show others will be the one you enjoy writing the most. I know I enjoyed every second of writing mine.

My GPA and standardized test scores were important factors in my application

With colleges such as Yale and Dartmouth reinstating standardized testing requirements , the reality is that academics will always be the first line of assessment for admission.

The GPA I submitted to Yale was 98.23/100. An admissions officer commended my GPA in the context of my financially underprivileged upbringing.

I also tried to take the most rigorous workload possible while also prioritizing my mental health , ultimately sending in six AP test scores. My SAT score was 1590.

I credit a lot of my academic achievements to the fact that I surrounded myself with peers who were very serious about their education.

My pre-calculus teacher's recommendation — the one that the admissions team rated higher — emphasized that I held the second highest grade in her class over her 20-year teaching career.

I tried to highlight my passions in my extracurriculars

My activities were a confusing mosaic of interests and impulses, but one that perfectly captured this 17-year-old boy who was still very unsure about who he was and what he wanted.

I researched human visual perception at a local community college , I performed spoken word poetry, and I hit about 80% of the notes in the choir (on a good day).

Related stories

My primary extracurricular, however, was the one I connected with most. At the start of the pandemic, I founded a language-learning program for children called "Spanish Meets You." I used the proceeds I made from the program, which featured tutoring and pen-palling services, to host community giveaways of essential health supplies — such as masks, face shields, and hand sanitizer.

"Spanish Meets You" evolved from my experience growing up in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, which was predominantly Hispanic and Asian. I loved going to cookouts and finding a diligent spread of both spicy tamales and fried rice. Despite our cultural differences , the two groups were united in our challenges and our respect for each other.

When I submitted my application, I worried that I didn't have a coherent theme for my extracurriculars, nor enough leadership — but based on the admissions team's comments, my genuine passion for one or two activities mattered in the end.

I wanted to capture who I truly am in my college essay

When I started drafting my essay, I knew I wanted to capture what was unextractable from my résumé: my curiosity, thick skin, and mistakes.

I decided to make the topic of my college essay about Chinese New Year, a holiday I celebrated with my 14 floormates in this tiny Brooklyn apartment building that we all called home for two decades. Every year, I would wait for my father by the door with mandarins, only to be disappointed by his absence.

Ultimately, however, I learned to enjoy this holiday — even if my celebration was unorthodox. My 14 floormates and I are unrelated by blood, but I remember we would gather over food every holiday, tell stories, and play a game of JENGA. Their laughter still ricochets in my ears hundreds of miles away as I now sit in my college dorm room , wrapping up my junior year.

I tried not to overthink the other essay questions

I would jot down whatever came to mind in the first 30 seconds, asking myself: "How would 7-year-old Brian answer this?"

Whenever I took too long to craft a response, it was a sign that I was probably sacrificing genuineness to make a false good impression.

One of the essays asked about my favorite intellectual concept. Instead of showing off by detailing some obscure scientific theory, I moved forward with writing about the diversity of motherhood in the animal kingdom, tying it back to my close relationship with my own mother.

My application was focused on proving how I would fit into the Yale community

Colleges are searching for those who will enrich the lives of their peers in different ways.

Therefore, in my application, I tried to highlight all the parts of me that would prove to Yale I would benefit their campus and their students. In doing so, I was accepted and met students doing just that.

One of my friends, for instance, is studying law. She also loves to rap and surprise her friends with midnight ice cream. Another is a science journalist who gives the best dating advice .

I would say Yale wouldn't be home even if one of them were missing. Everyone is here; everyone ends up where they are.

For students applying to Ivy League schools , I implore you to tell your dynamic, unique story — to think about how your rhythm will fold into a community's song.

When is Father's Day 2024? Here's what to know about the holiday and who invented it

The day to celebrate that special man in your life is coming up: Father's Day .

Whether your dad loves to binge-watch reality TV shows with you or he just pays for your phone bill, this is the one day of the year that's just for him.

Did you know that Father's Day became a nationwide holiday in the United States about 58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother's Day official, even though it was first celebrated on June 19, 1910?

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

According to History.com , during the 1920s and 30s, there was even a movement to get rid of Mother's Day and Father's Day for a single holiday called Parent's Day instead. However, the Great Depression put a stop to combining and de-commercializing the holidays.

The website says that economists estimate that more than $1 billion is spent by Americans for Father's Day gifts. If you're looking to buy your dad that special watch he's been eyeing in time for the holiday, here's when Father's Day is in 2024.

When is Father’s Day 2024?

Father's Day is on June 16, 2024.

What day does Father’s Day fall on each year?

Father's Day always falls on the third Sunday in June.

Who invented Father’s Day?

The enthusiasm to celebrate Father's Day wasn't quite at the same level as that of Mother's Day according to History.com. That could potentially be attributed to fathers not having the same sentimental appeal as mothers have.

In Spokane, Washington, around 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd — a woman who was one of six children raised by a widower — attempted to create a holiday like Mother's Day for male parents. To garner support, Dodd visited churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials. According to the website, she was successful as Washington was the first state to celebrate Father's Day on June 19, 1910.

In 1916, President Wilson honored Father's Day by using a telegraph to unfurl a flag in Spokane from Washington D.C. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge encouraged the observance of Father's Day from state governments.

Aside from the Great Depression leading to a push on promoting Father's Day, during World War II advertisers urged that celebrating Father's Day helped honor American troops and support the war effort, History.com states.

In 1972, during his reelection campaign, Richard Nixon made Father's Day an official federal holiday.

When is Mexican Father's Day, or Día del Padre?

Unlike  Día de las Madres , this holiday is not held on the exact same date each year. Día del Padre is like Father's Day in the U.S. It's celebrated annually on the third Sunday of June, which is June 16 in 2024.

The sun poured in that gorgeous spring day in 2022 and pierced the dozen windows of our living room. It lit up the light green walls, too, and illuminated the bright teal kitchen backsplash. Woodpeckers pecked the gray siding outside, birds chirped within earshot of every bedroom. A tire swing – long unused – hung in the side yard. If I listened closely, I could hear a younger version of myself asking Dad to push me harder. Faster.

The living room TV stared back at us. Blank. The news was usually on in the morning at this hour if someone was home. Dad was never here at this time on a weekday. But everything changed when he started showing symptoms of aphasia – yes, like Bruce Willis – that turned out to be the one-in-a-million, always-fatal neurodegenerative condition known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD).

He died weeks later.

"Dad, why don’t we go through the worksheet?" I urged. Like I used to when I was a kid and needed help with math homework. My 8th grade math "problem of the week" became our problem of the week.

But this time the worksheet wasn't mine. It was his. Homework from his speech pathologist. His aphasia kept getting worse, not better. He started forgetting things too quickly. The physician he once was became a too-distant memory.

Dad, do you remember your name?

"Hey Dad, what’s your name?"

“Mark,” he said. Right. Good.

“That’s right! What about my name?”

“Mark.” He said it like he was trying to say "David," but was defeated. No one prepares you for when your parent looks at you and can't remember the name that they chose. I had first experienced this a few days earlier during another beautiful spring day, on a walk through a park near my childhood home. I asked him my name after a trip around the large pond, after being warned he might not remember. I didn't look at my reflection in the pool. I couldn't bear the horror that would reflect back at me.

“No, I’m David," I stammered. "What about your wife’s name?”

“Mark.” No. Again. Lisie. Her name is Lisie. Your wife of almost 31 years.

“No. What color is this folder?” I asked, frustrated.

“Yes!” My blue eyes lit up like wave pools and met his. He looked at me, but almost through me. Not totally registering my presence but not missing it, either. Like he was stuck between worlds.

The speech pathologist gave us this "red" trick. For whatever reason − one I’ll research another time − asking him the color of this red folder grounds him. Brings him down to earth from wherever his mind is at this point.

Maybe he’ll get better, I thought, every time he gets this right. But then I asked him to name objects around the house – a remote, a blanket – and we’re back at square one. Repeating the name “Mark,” or the color “red.”

His favorite song

“Dad, why don’t we listen to some music? Maybe ‘Take Five?’” He shrugged. I'm not sure whether he heard my question but either way it gave us both a break.

"Take Five," by Paul Desmond, is his favorite song. A jazz staple. I scrolled to my Spotify app and started playing it.

The drum beats began. Then the saxophone swung in, the star of the show. Dad played professional jazz in the Catskill Mountains of New York many years prior and wouldn't let anyone forget it. He played the clarinet, too, in a trio with a flutist and violinist, for decades. He often pulled out either or both instruments for family gatherings like Passover, for informal recitals. These memories swarmed my mind, musical notes leaping around like the plague of frogs.

“Da-da-da-duh-dah-“

He was … singing along? The same man who can't say my name, my mom's name, sometimes not his own name, knew the tune of "Take Five?"

He wasn't smiling. But he was singing. Somewhere, in the recesses of his brain that the CJD prion proteins were destroying, he remembered. Remembered playing "Let My People Go" at the Passover Seder with unnecessary (but beautiful) jazzy trills. Remembered visiting jazz clubs across New York City, probably hearing "Take Five" over and over again. Remembered reminding me to play the clarinet myself when I definitely haven't practiced, not once, even though my parents paid for private lessons.

He looked at me this time. Really at me. How was this possible? Why was this possible?

Did it mean anything?

How I think about 'Take Five' now

I wish it meant something. That maybe he was getting better, that the music would somehow shock his brain into working well again. That he could say "David" without hesitation like he did for nearly 30 years of my life.

What I gather it meant: CJD hadn't totally sucked the life out of him yet. The rapid decline was in full swing, of course, but it moved in slow motion too. In moments like this, both painstaking and poignant, melancholy and magnificent, terrible and true. Dad was dying but he was also still Dad. My dad.

We took a break once the song finished. His eyes returned to that stuck place. I filmed his humming, though, and I'm glad I did, so I can look back on it now. Do tears sting my eyes? Yes. But two years later, I press play on "Take Five" and think of him. Sometimes I hear it out in the world, and imagine him humming along. Or better yet, jamming on that saxophone.

How I've Changed

HDS is where I learned about the power of love. It started when I suddenly lost my father, the greatest love of my life, right before my third round of finals here. The impact of that loss while being immersed in scripture, faith, and community unlocked a painful but incredibly meaningful part of my life. I saw myself surrounded by so much care, I was given permission to feel and work through the hardest time of my life in my assignments and classes. I am coming out with a lot more than a Master of Divinity and a Certificate in Religion and Public Life. I became an artist here. A filmmaker, a published writer. I became a better friend and partner. A better sister, daughter, and aunt. A better ally to myself. It all emanated from how my grief taught me about how I was loved and how I want to love others. And that is a lesson I carry with me every day.

Memorable Moment

The day my father died, I texted one of my best friends, Alyjan Daya (MTS '23) and told him what had happened. It was the start of Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan. He asked if he could come over. Once I opened the door, not only was Alyjan there but what felt like the entire HDS Muslim community followed him into my small Harvard housing living room. They had all come straight from iftar at SOCH to my apartment. They all prayed with me, held my hand, and visibly felt my pain with me. I will never forget that.

Favorite Class or Professor

Dr. Hussein Rashid was the professor and mentor who had the greatest impact in my time at HDS. Even though we only met in my last year here, he quickly became my advisor, adoptive father and one of the most important people in my life. At a time of so much loss, he made me feel that what I had to say was significant and gave me the confidence (and the push!) to do more in one year than I even thought would be possible. He took me in as a daughter, student, and collaborator so generously. Not only have I become a better scholar through him, he also has made me a better Muslim by leading by example and being radically inclusive.

Message of Thanks

Sigh. A huge smile of gratitude just burst out of me as I think of the people I am about to mention. My dear friends, Alyjan, Sana, Fawaz, and Zehra. You were by my side physically, virtually, and spiritually through the hardest moment of my life. Your generosity towards me made me become more generous with myself. Knowing you exist made me realize that we don't always need to find community in big spaces of worship. That having four people that truly get you can be more valuable than 400 others who might not. My teachers, Professors Nurhaizatul Jamil, Rahina Muazu, Joyhanna Yoo Garza, Brandon Thomas Crowley. You were so kind to me. You made me feel like I had something important to say. And when my world fell apart, you made me feel enough in your classroom. The entire Religion and Public Life office, especially Hussein Rashid, Susie Hayward, Diane Moore, and Reem Atassi. Being part of RPL was hands down the best part of being at HDS. I owe a big chunk of my career today to your work, support, and kindness. Alex Kronemer (HDS '85) - I was meant to be your intern and (lo and behold!) you gave the opportunity (and huge responsibility) to star in your upcoming national broadcast production, "Islam's Greatest Love Stories." You are one of the kindest, genuinely good people I know. More than a career, you gave me a family, and that is more than I could ever have dreamed of. And last but not least - Drema Bowers, our assistant director for student support. If it wasn't for her, I would not have finished this degree. I will never forget that.

Future Plans

In my career, to keep serving my community through film as Assistant Producer at Unity Productions Foundation with my director, friend, and mentor Alex Kronemer. At home, to slow down, be present with my family and enjoy being alive. In my heart, to keep dreaming of a free Palestine.
