However, a dissertation is built around an introduction, literature review, methodology, results or findings, discussion and analysis, and a conclusion.

Therefore, the similarity is manifested in the fact that both forms of academic writing review external literature, but they are different for the most part when it comes to methodology, results, and discussion (Joyner et al., 2018). It is important to note that although both coursework and dissertation use outside sources, the literature review section analyses evidence through its themes and topics (Joyner et al., 2018). In contrast, coursework uses external evidence in accordance with the focus on an element of the thesis or argument.

Since the dissertation is still in the process of writing, the past coursework will be used to compare with the general structure of the former. For example, coursework on ‘Overconfidence and Trading Activity’ has an organisation consisting of an introduction, several body sections, and a conclusion, and the body is titled ‘Decision Making in Trading Activity.’

As a result, a dissertation creates a piece of new knowledge through its own efforts of evidence generation, but coursework uses other experts’ findings as supporting information for its argument.

Coursework and dissertation are highly distinct in terms of their central arguments. On the one hand, coursework presents a thesis within the scope of existing knowledge. In other words, an academic writer studies the available body of knowledge, identifies patterns or themes, and builds an argument on the basis of the information (Terrell, 2022). On the other hand, a dissertation’s core claim, thesis, or argument is a statement based on what is outside of existing knowledge. The argument is made by not relying or minimally relying on the available information but rather on the researcher’s own findings through experiments or other methods of research (Terrell, 2022). Therefore, both propose a specific and evidence-based claim, but the latter is derived from differential types of sources, such as the existing knowledge for coursework or research findings for a dissertation.

An example of the claim is that among existing cognitive biases, overconfidence is one of the most harmful ones. A specific evidence-based example is provided to substantiate the claim made on the importance of insurance for a population of interest.

The planning and writing process for a dissertation and coursework differ since the former incorporates elements absent or less extensive in coursework. The key similarity is that both academic writings begin with an identification of the subject of focus, followed by a search for an existing body of knowledge. In other words, a writer of coursework or dissertation begins their efforts by consulting reliable and valid evidence on the topic (Joyner et al., 2018). However, the major difference is that a coursework writer’s further analysis is limited to what was found as a result of the literature assessment (Terrell, 2022). Essentially, he or she has to make in-depth observations of patterns and themes to answer the research question or make an argument.

On the contrary, a writer of a dissertation needs to use the existing knowledge to identify gaps within it to be filled in by him or her. The benefit of coursework is that it allows a person to acquire in-depth knowledge of a specific module to the point that he or she can make insightful observations. In addition, one can identify patterns in the existing body of evidence, which develops his or her skills within this specific area. The advantage of a dissertation is more apparent since it enables a person to create new knowledge, which was previously identified as a gap derived from the analysis of existing literature (Joyner et al., 2018). It profoundly develops not only module area skills and competencies but research abilities and analytical capabilities as well. Therefore, the core challenge of a dissertation writer is being self-sufficient and independent since it is he or she who has to find the gap, design a proper method of analysis, and conduct the research (Terrell, 2022). If you’re studying psychology and looking to register as a psychologist in the future, it is likely that you’ve heard about the above-mentioned qualifications. To clear up any misconceptions about these types of masters programmes, Cognition & Co have put together the following article highlighting the differences between them;

Masters by Dissertation:

A Masters by Dissertation is a purely academic M degree whereby students are required to conduct research that culminates in a dissertation. Different universities call these qualifications by different names (Academic Masters / Masters by Research, etc), however they all follow a similar format.

Most of these programmes can be done part-time through distance learning institutions however students will need to be in contact with their allocated supervisor. A supervisors’ role is to help, support and guide students through their research, ensuring the quality of the dissertation.

While a Masters by Dissertation is heavily research orientated, these degrees are different to a Research Masters degree in South Africa. A Research Masters is a full-time (sometimes part-time) coursework programme offered by some universities ( Wits ) which can lead to an HPCSA registration as a Research Psychologist .

Unlike a Research Masters, a Masters by Dissertation does not lead to registration with the HPCSA. Even once a student has completed a Masters by Dissertation, they are still not allowed to call themselves a Psychologist, nor will they be able to counsel clients, regardless of their dissertation topic or title.

These degrees are highly valued in academic circles and would certainly put any graduate in good stead to work in some form of higher education. Completing a dissertation also opens doors in terms of publishing one’s dissertation and having that accolade added to one’s portfolio.

Coursework Masters:

In order to become an HPCSA registered Psychologist in South Africa, students will need to complete a Masters Degree that includes a coursework aspect, as well as a dissertation. These are typically all full-time programmes (except some Research Masters) where students will spend their time between classes and supervision on a university campus, as well as at practicals in hospitals, clinics, or schools.

Again, universities may call these coursework programmes by different names (sometimes called Professional Masters), but they are typically M degrees in a specialized area of psychology. These specialized areas are defined by the HPCSA and are broken into different registered categories; i.e. Clinical , Counselling , Educational , Industrial , Research , and more recently Neuropsychology .

The duration of a coursework degree is also specific to the different universities. Many universities offer these degrees over a period of two years, however there are a number of universities that allow students to complete both their coursework and dissertation in just one year. Once a student has completed their 1 or 2 years of coursework, they may then register with the HPCSA as an Intern Psychologist and begin their 1 year internship. Following the completion of a 1 year internship, graduates may write their respective board exam with the HPCSA and upon passing will receive the title; Psychologist.

It is also important to note that students following the route ending in registration as a Clinical Psychologist, will also need to complete one year of community service once they have successfully passed their board exams .

But what are we all really talking about when we refer to a dissertation or a thesis? And does the term you use actually impact on what you actually end up writing?

This article covers the main differences between a dissertation and thesis, and how the terms may differ depending on the course, university and location.

What is a dissertation?

A dissertation is a piece of academic writing centred around original research. In their dissertations, students review existing research but also build on this with unique hypotheses and approaches.

A dissertation can be used to disprove a previous theory or take existing theories and research in a new direction. It is a large research project that is usually completed at the end of the academic year.

Usually, a dissertation starts with a dissertation proposal , which is approved by a study supervisor. The student then completes the research and writes up the methodology , findings, evaluations and conclusions from the research.

Dissertations can be undertaken by both undergraduate and postgraduate students. At undergraduate level the word count is around 5,000 to 8,000 and at postgraduate level it is usually 10,000 to 15,000.

What is a thesis?

A thesis is an academic paper covering an in-depth review of existing research in a particular discipline. It will involve an academic argument, although it doesn’t usually require original research from the student. The existing research is used to support and evaluate the proposed argument.

A thesis is not usually required at undergraduate level and is more common at postgraduate level.

This large piece of written-up research is usually completed at the end of a masters degree. Some masters courses require a thesis to graduate.

Differences between a dissertation vs thesis

The main purpose of a writing a dissertation is to add new findings to the existing literature in that field with original research. Whereas theses tend to evaluate existing findings, as their purpose is to demonstrate knowledge and skills within the course’s subject matter.

In terms of how long it takes to complete a thesis or dissertation project, a thesis is typically shorter than a dissertation since there are fewer original research aspects involved. This means that it will probably take less time. However, this can differ depending on the university and the course.

Dissertations sometimes require an oral presentation, known as a viva , where findings are showcased to academics who ask questions about the research. Theses usually do not require this.

The root of the words 

The word ‘dissertation’ originates from the Latin word ‘dissertare’, meaning to continue to discuss and the Latin word ‘disserere’ which means to examine and discuss .

The word ‘thesis’ originally comes from the Greek word ‘tithenai’, which means to place or position. This later evolved into the Latin ‘thesis’, which had two meanings: an abstract question and to put something forward .

Similarities between a dissertation vs thesis

Although there are some key differences between a dissertation and a thesis, there are also similarities.

  • Both are generally long pieces of academic writing, much longer than a typical essay.
  • Both explore a topic in depth, whether you are conducting totally unique research or structuring an argument based on existing research.
  • Both are considered a final project and usually required to graduate from a degree, masters or PhD. Students can graduate without a thesis or dissertation if they choose to complete a postgraduate diploma or postgraduate certificate instead.
  • Excellent academic writing skills are highly important for both types of research project.

Is a dissertation harder than a thesis?

Though, the difficulty of a thesis or dissertation depends on your personal skill set. For instance, students that learn better by developing their own research ideas may find a dissertation easier than a thesis.

Difficulty can also depend on the level of the course. For instance, a thesis completed at doctorate level is likely to require more advanced knowledge than a thesis at undergraduate level.

The difficulty of either type of research project can also vary depending on the subject matter and the resources available to you.

Both dissertations and theses can be challenging, but don’t be put off by the thought of having to produce a larger body of work. Your supervisor will be there to support you.

Definitions depend on where you are

The terms ‘dissertation’ and ‘thesis’ are sometimes used interchangeably, and the meanings can differ depending on the country and university.

There are plenty of differences between the variant forms of English, such as British English and American English. Around the world, different English-speaking countries use the words ‘dissertation’ and ‘thesis’ differently. 

Generally, nations with British-based academic systems of university education use dissertation to refer to the body of work at the end of an undergraduate or masters level degree . British-based institutions generally use thesis to refer to the body of work produced at the end of a PhD . 

In countries and institutions that are based on the American system of education, the words tend to be used in reverse. However, institutions and even different departments in the same university can use the words differently. 

If you're in doubt, then stick with the way the university and department you're currently attending use the terms. 

Definitions can depend on the subject

In the UK, the terms ‘dissertation’ and ‘thesis’ are generally applied equally across institutions and subjects. 

However, in the US the meanings can differ between different subject areas. The term ‘thesis’ can be used to describe a piece of original research in US academia, whereas original research is usually referred to as a dissertation in the UK. 

If you’re studying in the US , you may complete a thesis at masters level in another subject area that involves wide-ranging reading and understanding rather than original research and still call it a thesis.

With so much interchangeability between the two terms, it’s understandable that there is often confusion in the debate between a dissertation vs thesis, as there is no clear answer. 

Always read specific course details to understand exactly what’s involved in the research project that you are required to produce.

Examples from US and UK universities

Georgetown University in the US refers to a dissertation and a thesis as both adding to your 'field of knowledge' . The University of Edinburgh recommends that you refer to your individual course handbook for guides to dissertations, so each department will have their own guidelines to using the word dissertation and thesis. At University College London they refer to a thesis as the piece of work at the end of an EngD, MPhil, MD(Res) or PhD, which are all research degrees. 

In conclusion

Ultimately, it doesn't really matter which word you use as both refer to a serious and lengthy piece of work where you can show what you have researched and understood as part of your postgraduate studies.

As long as you are referring to the piece of work that you are compiling in the same way as those in your department then you will avoid confusion.

It is important to check whether the research piece involves original research or expects you to build upon existing research.

Writing a dissertation or a thesis requires a substantial amount of planning and work and you don't want to let yourself down at the last hurdle with poor presentation of your work, so always keep an eye on your course or department guidelines.

Today, undergraduates engage in coursework activities such as assignments, essays, team projects, and written exams as a host of complementary summative and formative assessments. Additionally, at the end of the course, students are expected to turn in a robust piece of largely self-directed academic work known as the dissertation. I illustrate a concise comparison between the two kinds of student work.

It is recognised that consistency in assessment is even more important where assessment is through one large piece of work, such as a dissertation, and where the assessment outcome will have a significant impact on the final grade of students.

High stakes assessments are commonly used at the end of secondary school to select students for higher education. However, growing concerns about the preparedness of new undergraduates for university study have led to an increased focus on the form of assessments used at upper secondary level. This study compared the structure and format of assessments used at upper secondary level (GCE A level qualifications), and the first year of undergraduate study of English literature in England. Greater diversity of assessment was found at university compared to A level, while there was little difference in the level of scaffolding and guidance provided in assessment materials. We conclude that it seems inevitable that some students will meet forms of assessment with which they are unfamiliar at university. Implications for the design of first-year undergraduate courses are discussed.

Traditionally, assessment has been seen as something done by academics after the teaching and learning takes place. In this paper we argue that it is timely to rethink our approach to assessment, and who is implicated in the acts of judgement which lie at the heart of both formative and summative assessment. Assessment is more likely to lead to valued learning if some of the judgement employed belongs to students, and not just the academic-teachers (Boud, 1990; Nicol and McFarlane-Dick, 2006). Through two case studies, we illustrate how the development of students’ skills in assessment and especially self-assessment can become more prominent in our curriculum and learning objectives. Our experiences suggest not only that student learning can be enhanced in this fashion, but that there are efficiency gains for teaching academics too: outcomes that become especially important as we seek ways to overcome the challenging expectations experienced by modern-day academia.

This paper presents a case study of assessment practices in one PG unit of study being taught by the author in the last 2 year. Based on an understanding of assessment in terms of constructive alignment (Biggs, 1996) and consequential validity (Boud, 1995; Linn, Baker, & Dunbar, 1991; Messik, 1989), this paper evaluates the current assessment protocols in this unit. Biggs (1996) argues that learning is best achieved if there is a constructive alignment between the learning goals, teaching approaches, and assessment techniques. Each of these should relate to the other. It is when these three elements are finely calibrated that learning is at its peak. In this paper, I evaluate the degree of constructive alignment in the unit of study under focus. Assessment documents are studied in relation to the theoretical insights gained from the literature and related to the course aims and objectives. In addition, students’ evaluation of these assessment protocols are examined and these are compared to the unit coordinator’s goals and understanding. The results help outline future directions in assessment practice for this unit.
