Fellowships

• Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs Through its Fellowship Programs, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties. These programs provide fellowship support at the predoctoral, dissertation and postdoctoral levels. The Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs offer approximately 60 predoctoral awards, 35 awards for dissertation research and 24 postdoctoral awards each year.
• NIST Boulder Laboratories: Professional Research Experience Program Provides valuable laboratory experience and financial assistance to undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students. Fellowships are awarded to assure continued growth and progress of science and engineering in the United States.

• Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Scholars Recognition Program Recognizes talented graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in the chemical sciences who demonstrate leadership in mentoring, promotion of DEIR (Diveristy, Equity, Inclusion, Respect), and promotion of research safety. 
• The American Chemical Society Bridge Travel Award for Graduate Students The ACS Bridge Project Student Travel Award is meant to defray travel and/or registration costs to the Spring National Meeting and Exposition. The aim of this travel award is to advance the career and professional development of underrepresented minority (URM) chemical science graduate students by helping to support the students' effort in presenting at the ACS National Meeting. Each award covers the cost of eligible expenses up to $2,500. This award is currently only offered in 2020.
• New Opportunities AAC&U: The K. Patricia Cross Future Leaders Award Recognizes graduate students who show exemplary promise as future leaders of higher education; who demonstrate a commitment to developing academic and civic responsibility in themselves and others; and whose work reflects a strong emphasis on teaching and learning.
• ACS Division of Cellulose & Renewable Material: The Graduate Student Award for Excellence in Cellulose or Renewable Materials Research Award consists of a check for $2,000, up to $500 for ACS Spring national meeting travel expenses, and an individual plaque honoring the recipient's accomplishment.
• Henkel Award (formerly the AkzoNobel Award) for Outstanding Graduate Research in Polymer Chemistry Recognizes a graduate student or recent graduate who has completed an outstanding Ph.D. thesis in research related to Polymer Chemistry in US or Canada. Nominees will be judged on the basis of their contribution to the thesis research, the quality and level of innovation demonstrated, and the impact of their research on the science, engineering, or technology of synthetic polymers or biopolymers.
• ACS Division of Organic Chemistry: Technical Achievements in Organic Chemistry Recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of organic chemistry from Bachelor's and Master's level chemists, or their equivalents, pursuing careers in chemical industry at research institutes.
• International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry Prize for Young Chemists The IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists will be given for the most outstanding Ph.D. theses in the general area of the chemical sciences, as described in a 1000-word essay.

Chemistry PhD Program

The University of Pennsylvania is an internationally renowned research institution that attracts the best students from the United States and around the globe. The Graduate Program is designed for students who wish to earn a Ph.D. in Chemistry while undertaking cutting edge research. The program provides students with the necessary theoretical background and hands-on training to become independent and highly successful scientists.  Graduate students achieve mastery of advanced chemistry topics through courses in different subdisciplines. Broad exposure to current research also occurs via four weekly departmental seminar programs and many interdisciplinary, university-wide lecture series.

Currently, faculty, students, and postdoctoral associates in Chemistry work in the fields of bioinorganic chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, chemical biology, biophysical chemistry, bioinformatics, materials science, laser chemistry, health related chemistry, structural and dynamical studies of biological systems, X-ray scattering/diffraction, NMR spectroscopy, applications of computing and computer graphics, as well as investigations of chemical communication and hormone-receptor interactions. Many research groups combine different techniques to explore frontier areas, such as nanomaterials applied to biology, photoactive biomolecules, and single-molecule imaging. Novel synthetic procedures are under constant development for targets ranging from super-emissive nanoparticles to highly specialized drug molecules and giant dendrimers, which are being explored, for example, as drug-delivery systems. The Research Facilities in the Department of Chemistry provide a strong technology base to enable the highest level of innovation. Graduate students are a driving, integral force at Penn Chemistry.

The Graduate School of Chemistry offers scholarships for short-term stays in foreign labs to Master’s and PhD students. The goal is to help students gain new skills, particularly through training in the latest techniques in international labs.

We offer €1,000 per month for outgoing mobility scholarships in 2023-2024 . This is for Graduate School students planning internships abroad lasting 1 to 6 months.

International students

The Graduate School of Chemistry offers scholarships to international students enrolling in the “Frontiers in Chemistry” international Masters course. The goal of the SMARTS-UP Graduate Schools program is to enhance internationalisation and attract talented students, building a pool of potential future doctoral candidates.

As part of this initiative, €10,000 scholarships will be given to international students for the 2024-2025 academic year. These scholarships support hosting in various Master’s programs , each lasting one year.

10 great PhD scholarships in the US for international students 2022

If you’re an international student looking for PhD scholarships, consider the US. With over 4,000 universities and six different time zones across 50 states, the US is one of the most popular study destinations in the world. Three main reasons why the US continues to attract PhD students despite their geographical location (usually taking up to two days to arrive from elsewhere) and high living costs as befits a developed nation, are outlined below.

Firstly, the US is home to many world-class universities with robust global  rankings – some of them are even in the top 100 world universities. Even though ranking is not an all-important reason to choose a university to do a PhD, it makes sense to study in one of the world’s best-ranked universities, and where else but to choose the US.

Secondly, the US PhD takes a longer time than PhDs in other countries. This is not necessarily a bad thing because when the US PhD takes up to five years or longer to complete, you will have more time to adjust, settle in and eventually thrive in your studies.

Finally, students doing their PhDs in the US are almost guaranteed to have a tuition fee waiver. They will get a stipend from the university for the entire duration of their studies as well, which makes for an attractive incentive.

However, if you want to get this funded PhD in the US, especially in the top-ranked universities, it is always a good idea to apply as early as possible before their deadlines. If you miss the scholarship deadline, you can still apply and be accepted for the PhD.

Here is a list of US PhD scholarships and stipends that will help you achieve your dream of studying in the US.

PhD Scholarship 1: University of Idaho

As one of the top 100 for the best value in the US, the University of Idaho is a great choice to do your PhD, thanks to the low cost of living and tuition fees. The College of Graduate Studies has several knowledgeable staff who can advise you on the wide array of financial aid resources as well.

You need to have a relevant master’s degree to be able to apply for this scholarship by Apr. 1, 2022. Besides the scholarship application, you have to submit a 500 to 1,000-word essay or a two to five-minute video that describes your aspirations to conduct projects, research or other opportunities to increase intercultural understanding.

PhD Scholarship 2: University of Colorado Boulder

As one of 36 US public research institutions in the Association of American Universities – an elite group of recognised research universities – the University of Colorado Boulder has many enviable rankings such as being the first university to have a STARS Gold for sustainability. Their warm student-centred campus community ensures you will not feel out of place.

The Incoming Graduate Student Fellowship – with a Feb. 11, 2022 deadline under the Centre for Humanities and the Arts – will cover up to 18 credits of tuition per semester, student fees, health insurance as well as a first-year stipend equivalent to a 50% Graduate Part-Time Instructor appointment. You must be enroled as a doctoral student and working in the humanities or arts.

PhD Scholarship 3: Vanderbilt University 

Thanks to an innovative mix of immersive learning, integrated research and collaborative culture, Vanderbilt University is ranked the country’s #14 National University, and #1 for its education, nursing and audiology graduate programmes (US World and News Report 2021). Their location in Nashville, Tennessee allows students to enjoy a world-class city experience in a small college-feel town.

Qualified PhD applicants can apply for the University Graduate Fellowship by Jan. 15, 2022 in order to be nominated by their department. They will receive a stipend of up to US$5,000 for up to three years of their PhD studies.

PhD Scholarship 4 and 5: Washington University in St. Louis

Founded in 1853 in St. Louis, Missouri, Washington University in St. Louis attracts over 15,500 students from 100 countries and all 50 US states. They are well-known for being among the world’s leaders in teaching, research, patient care and service to society.

Below are two scholarships – both with a deadline of Jan. 25, 2022 – offered to students wanting to apply to the Graduate School, Washington University in St. Louis:

Chancellor’s Graduate Fellowship

Graduate students with strong academic records, and a keen interest in diversity and service can apply for this Chancellor’s Graduate Fellowship where they will receive academic, professional and personal support. You need to have a US undergraduate degree and have a desire to become a college or university professor.

Fellowship winners enjoy an annual stipend of US$36,720 (2021-22 rate), full tuition coverage, an educational allowance of US$1,500 and priority housing. 

Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Fellowship for Women in Graduate Study

This Fellowship – co-sponsored by the University and the Monticello College Foundation – is especially created to encourage more women to take up graduate study, and serve society afterwards.

The successful recipients will receive an annual stipend worth US$36,720 and a US$600 travel award besides full tuition remission throughout their programme.

PhD Scholarship 6: University of Minnesota Twin Cities

The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is well recognised as one of the most famous public research universities in the US. Over 50,000 students study at this university, which spans five campuses including the main Twin Cities campus.

The Diversity of Views and Experiences (DOVE) Fellowship Programme is available for exceptional research graduate students with diverse life and educational backgrounds who are underrepresented within graduate programmes.

They need to be nominated first by the Director of Graduate Studies in their respective graduate programme; they will get a stipend worth US$25,000, academic tuition for up to 14 graduate-rate credits per semester, health insurance subsidy and dental care.

PhD Scholarship 7: University of Texas at Austin

The University of Texas at Austin – ranked as the top public university in Texas (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019) – has other high rankings including being #14 Public University (US News and World Report 2019). Their global world ranking is #67 (QS World University Rankings 2022) as well.

Through this Donald D. Harrington Graduate Fellows Programme Fellowship , recruited talented students are envisioned to share their knowledge and success with future generations. A stipend of US$40,000 for 12 months, tuition and required fees, an allowance for student medical insurance, and US$2,000 for miscellaneous expenses make up this generous funding package; the deadline is Jan. 24, 2022.

The following universities and institutions have not indicated any deadlines for their graduate fellowships, but you can contact them for further information.

PhD Scholarship 8: University of Oregon

As a Tier-One National Public Research University and being the top public university in Oregon (for first-year retention and graduation rates), the University of Oregon attracts over 22,000 students. It has nine schools and colleges. 

The International Cultural Service Programme is an annual tuition waiver scholarship ranging from US$9,000 to US$35,000 for up to 15 credits per term. Winners are required to do cultural service in the form of presentations about their home country to children, community organisations and the university’s students and faculty.

PhD Scholarships 9 and 10: East-West Centre

The East-West Centre , established by the US Congress in 1960, is a nonprofit organisation acting as a US-based institution for public diplomacy in the Indo-Pacific region. Located adjacent to the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM), the centre’s Honolulu campus spans 21 acres.

Below are two Fellowships – established since 1999 through the Y. S. Lee Family Endowed Fellowship Fund and worth US$5,000 each – available for graduate students.

Wing-tsit Chan Graduate Fellowship in Chinese Philosophy

For students interested in Chinese philosophy, they can apply for this fellowship. They need to be nominated by the UHM Philosophy Department and selected by a committee that includes representatives from the East-West Centre’s Education Programme, the department’s Graduate Committee, and a member of the UH Center for Chinese Studies Executive Committee.

Ah Kin (Buck) Yee Graduate Fellowship in Chinese Studies

The recipient should ideally have been accepted for full-time graduate study in any field of Chinese studies. You need to apply via the University of Hawaii’s Student Scholarships website.

There is a broad variety of courses both in German and English. Both English and German are the spoken languages in the lab groups.

No fixed application deadlines

The Faculty of Chemistry is a member of the graduate school "Georg-August University School of Science" (GAUSS). This is where the doctoral training is concentrated. The faculty offers PhD studies at the highest scientific level, during which the PhD students participate in supplementary lectures according to their individual field of interest and gain teaching experience while pursuing their research activities.

Credits to be taken can be taken individually and flexibly during the course of study. There is a wide range of lectures and seminars in chemistry as well as in the neighbouring faculties of natural sciences. In addition, key competence modules, e.g. language courses, can be taken according to the student's own interests.

• Training in intercultural skills

During the doctoral studies, the doctoral candidates are integrated into the teaching at the faculty and supervise, e.g. laboratory practicals or exercise groups. The teaching performance is recognised with credits in the doctoral programme. A tutor school can be attended to build up one's own teaching skills.

Fees are around 400 EUR per semester. The fees include a prepaid semester ticket that entitles students to use regional trains (in Lower Saxony and Bremen) and city buses in Göttingen free of charge. Students of the University of Göttingen receive discounts for cultural events. Meals and drinks are also available at reduced prices at all university canteens. The Department typically admits 65-70 PhD and 90 - 100 MRes students each year. Funding for these students comes from a diverse range of sources, including the EPSRC, industry, scholarships and self-funded students. A selection of PhD Studentships currently available are detailed below.

Department of chemistry departmental phd scholarships.

The Department of Chemistry has 4 departmental scholarships for PhD applicants starting in 2023/24.

This scheme is only eligible to applicants who have home fee status. The scholarship will cover the full fees and stipend (UKRI London rate - £20,622 for 2023-24) for the 3 years 6 months of the student’s PhD studies.

We encourage applications from all backgrounds to apply. The Departmental Scholarship Panel will consider academic excellence, research potential and extracurricular activities. The Panel will also take into account other aspects, such as overcoming adversity, outreach and community activities and widening participation.

Interested candidates should make contact and discuss a research project with a PhD supervisor based in the Chemistry Department . After discussions with the chosen supervisor, candidates must complete a Chemistry Department scholarship application form. The supervisor will then return the documentation to the department for consideration by the Scholarship Panel. The date for submission of this documentation is Friday 1st December 2023 . There will be no panel interview.

EPSRC CDT in Chemical Biology - Empowering UK BioTech Innovation

The mission of the ICB CDT is to train postgraduate researchers with the language, knowledge and skills to enable them to work at the interface between the physical and life sciences, producing researchers with expertise and understanding that spans both fields, and who are able to embrace Lab of the Future platforms – which is at the heart of our new remit. This skill set is in great demand from future employers and short supply and has the potential to revolutionise the state of the art with respect to manipulating, measuring and modelling molecular interactions in biological systems and will transform R&D pipelines.

This will transform our understanding of molecular mechanisms of disease, stimulate novel agrochemical design and underpin structured product breakthroughs, whilst also enabling fundamental discovery in the life and medical sciences.

Our programme, with EDI, student empowerment & cohort formation at its core, fuses blue skies & translational research with professional skills courses and workplace training. Students emerge with a knowledge of molecular technologies, sustainable product development, lean innovation & early-stage commercialisation. Our multi-disciplinary supervision model, with every student in the CDT having at least two supervisors, one from the physical sciences and one from the life sciences, comprises 1-year MRes + 3-year PhD, with for the first time an optional 1 year post doctoral fellowship, called Elevate, that will offer graduates unparalleled in-work experience.

Frost Group PhD Studentship

The Frost group welcomes applications for 2024 starting PhD students. The priority areas for funding are in method development in the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics. The two headline projects projects are: using machine-learning and probabilistic numerics approaches to improve sampling in (path integral) quantum Monte-Carlo; and in developing path-integral based methods (SMatPI, QuAPI, Transfer Tensor Method) of simulating nonadiabatic dynamics and applying these methods to molecular materials for photovoltaics and the upconversion of light. The two fully funded positions are supported by the Royal Society, with a 48-month London-weighted tax-free stipend of £22410 for year 1, £23204 for year 2, £23901 for year 3, and £24618 for year 4, and full home-fees.

Scalable Kinetic Dynamic Resolution Strategies for the Production of Chiral Compounds

Funding and Deadline: To be eligible for support, applicants must be “UK Residents” as defined by the EPSRC. The studentship is for 4 years starting as soon as possible and will provide full coverage of standard tuition fees and an annual tax-free stipend of approximately £20,622. Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a First-Class Honours or a high 2:1 degree at Master’s level (or equivalent) in any relevant chemistry or science subject. Funding is co-funded through Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and BASF .

  Project summary

The Industry Case (I-Case) PhD student will join an interdisciplinary cohort of students working under the umbrella of the IConIC Prosperity Partnership An internship of min. 3 months will be facilitated and sponsored by BASF for the utilization of specific infrastructure and technology transfer.

Enantioselective synthesis remains to be a major challenge in classical organic synthesis both technically and economically. In collaboration between BASF and Imperial College London we have developed a novel processing concept that combines an an immobilized enzymatic transformation with flash thermal racemization for the racemization of chiral amines, i. e. a dynamic kinetic resolution approach. It can be applied to amines and stereoinversion reactions.[1] At the heart of the technology is the development of a flow module that can realize rapid racemization of the amine with high selectivity, afforded by residence time control, increasing the productivity of the process by several orders of magnitude. In this proposed follow-on work, we will extend the concept to the synthesis of other optically active compounds that are essential to the fine chemicals and pharmaceutical industries and demonstrate scalability in a lab setup. Key questions to be addressed during the PhD will be: Establishing an integrated process that couples transition metal catalysis with biocatalysis in flow, using spatial and residence time control to achieve kinetically compatible systems to maximise productivity. - Expanding the concept to a range of different chemical transformations. This may entail the integration of an enantiomer separation step into the processing concept. - Preparing the opposite enantiomer/epimer of natural materials through stereocentre inversion, including unnatural (D-)amino acids. - Scaling up the process to yield relevant demonstrator samples and prove the applicability of the methodology for commercial purposes.

AAUW Fellowship Program is a fully funded scholarship. This scholarship is offered by The American Association of University Women , USA. Government Of Japan Offers Scholarships For Indian Students Pursuing Research

T he Japanese government is inviting Indian students to pursue research under the MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology) scholarship initiative. This scholarship opportunity is for the academic year 2025, and applications are accepted until May 3, 2024.

Scholarship Benefits:

The scholarship offers a monthly allowance depending on the course enrolled in.

For students in preparatory education and non-regular students: 143,000 yen per month (approximately ₹ 77,358).

For regular students in master's or professional degree courses: 144,000 yen per month (approximately ₹ 77,902).

For regular students in doctoral courses: 145,000 yen per month (approximately ₹ 78,441).

Additional regional allowances may apply for those studying or conducting research in designated regions.

Education Fees :

MEXT covers fees for entrance examinations, matriculation, and tuition at universities. 

However, grantees must bear the entrance examination fee if they fail to proceed to the master's course.

Application Guidelines :

The MEXT scholarship programme offers opportunities for international students interested in graduate studies at Japanese universities as Research Students.

Applicants must be enrolled in a master's, doctoral, or professional graduate course at a graduate school.

They should also be conducting research in a specialised field at an undergraduate department, graduate school, or institute attached to a university.

Exceptions apply for Young Leaders' Program Students or Teacher Training Students.

Fields Of Study:

Applicants must apply for the field of study they majored in at university or its related field.

Fields of study must align with graduate courses at Japanese universities.

Certain fields may be restricted by the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in the applicant's country.

Clinical training in medicine, dentistry, or welfare science requires relevant licenses under Japanese laws.

Eligibility:

Age Limit: Applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1990, with exceptions granted in special circumstances.

Eligibility criteria include completion of 16 years of school education outside Japan or a bachelor's degree equivalent.

For doctoral courses, overseas degrees equivalent to a master's degree or professional degree are accepted.

Applicants with extensive research experience may also qualify.
