Select someone who has impacted your life in a special way, or someone whose qualities you admire greatly. Look for role models in your life. In addition, it is important to choose someone you have enough information.

This helps keep your essay organized and focused. You can use the basic structure of an essay with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion as a guide. So make sure you include all of the important points in your outline.

4. Use Vivid Language and Imagery:

Describe anything that stands out about the person, such as their physical appearance and mannerisms. Use powerful adjectives to give life to your essay and make it more interesting for your readers.

5. Include Relevant Examples:

Using real-life examples adds depth and texture to your essay. These can be anything from stories of when you met the person or a unique trait that they possess. Examples will also help make your essay more illustrative and descriptive.

6. Write an Effective Conclusion:

Your conclusion should serve as a summary of all the points you have discussed in your essay. Make sure to end on a positive note and provide your readers with a lasting impression of your subject’s character.

How to Write an Essay About a Famous Person in History

Last Updated: December 13, 2022 Fact Checked

This article was co-authored by Emily Listmann, MA . Emily Listmann is a private tutor in San Carlos, California. She has worked as a Social Studies Teacher, Curriculum Coordinator, and an SAT Prep Teacher. She received her MA in Education from the Stanford Graduate School of Education in 2014. There are lots of things to think about when writing a paper about a famous person from history. Your teacher may have given you this assignment with exact instructions on who to write about and what information to include, or they may have just asked you to write about someone from history that you admire without telling you exactly what information to include. When writing the essay, take your time and rely on good information that you have collected from books and respected internet resources. Don’t underestimate the time you will need to edit your essay in order to have a final product that you can feel proud of.

Preparing to Write Your Essay

Step 1 Read the assignment carefully.

  • Should you choose your person or has one been assigned?
  • Does your teacher want you to use a citation style? For example, they may want you to use the MLA format or maybe they want you to use Chicago Style. [1] X Research source If your teacher says they don't care, then there's nothing to worry about, but make sure that you include a “References” page at the end of your essay. On this page, you should include all of the different websites, books, and/or magazines that you used to write the essay.
  • Is there a word limit? Does your teacher require a specific font or font size? Should you double-space the essay? If you're not sure, ask you teacher.

Step 2 Choose a person that did a lot in their life.

  • Try to think about the things you know the person has done. Did they live a pretty normal life, but did one really cool thing? A person who was more or less “normal” could be harder to write about if your teacher wants a ten page essay. For example, although Adolf Hitler was not in any way an admirable human being, writing a historical essay about his life would be pretty easy because he did a lot of different things.
  • On the other hand, if there is a historical figure you are really interested in, you will have a good time researching and writing about your person whether they led very busy lives or not. The most important thing is to choose someone you find fascinating. Try making a list of your hobbies and interests and then run a Google search to find famous people who also had one of these hobbies or interests.
  • 3 Brainstorm a list of questions. Write down all of the questions you want to answer about your person. If your teacher told you what questions to answer, then use those. If your teacher did not, then this is up to you. Make sure you talk about when and where they were born, whether they had a good childhood or not, what makes them special and interesting, what they accomplished (whether good or bad), and why you find them interesting. [2] X Trustworthy Source University of North Carolina Writing Center UNC's on-campus and online instructional service that provides assistance to students, faculty, and others during the writing process Go to source

Step 4 Research the questions you want to answer in your essay.

  • Write down anything you find interesting and want to include. At the same time that you do this, write down the source of that information. For example, the name and author of the book or the address of the website.
  • If you are having a hard time finding information about your person in the library, ask the librarian to help you search. They’re there to help you, and may have ways of finding information that you hadn’t thought of. Plus, if you find the information through the library, there is a better chance that you will find high quality information.
  • Make sure that you understand what is considered an acceptable source of information by your teacher. For example, some teachers may consider it OK to use websites such as Wikipedia, while other teachers may not. If you’re not sure, just ask them.
  • Try to include at least one primary source that was written by the person you are researching, such as a letter, journal entry, or speech. This will help you get to know the person better than you would by only using secondary sources, such as articles and textbooks.

Step 5 Outline your essay.

  • Write your outline so that the information is in the same order that it will be in in the paper. For example, don't put questions about how the person died before the questions about where they were born and who their parents were.

Step 6 Review other essays.

  • Don’t plagiarize though! If you copy someone else's work without giving them credit for their work, this is called plagiarism. If you do find something interesting that you want to include, be sure to give credit to that person. Plagiarism is a big deal, so it’s best to learn early that it isn’t worth the risk.

Writing the Essay

Step 1 Start with the body of the essay.

  • In the body, you will write about all of the information that you found when you were researching. It is the part of the paper where you answer any and all questions you have come up with.
  • Your essay will be more clear if you separate different parts of this person’s life into paragraphs. For example, the first paragraph might start out by explaining when, where, and to whom this person was born. In this paragraph you might talk about what kind of childhood this person had, and whether they had any big experiences that made them into the person they were.
  • In later paragraphs, you can talk about what the person did that made them famous. You might also want to include interesting things that you found about this person’s personal life. For example, whether or not they got married or whether or not they suffered from any mental disorders.

Step 2 Write the conclusion.

  • Don't write more than one or two paragraphs for your conclusion. It should simply go over what you have written in the body about who this person was and why they were interesting and important.
  • For example, you might write, “In summary, Martin Luther King Jr. was a driven man who, although his life was tragically cut short, accomplished amazing things in his life. Though his upbringing presented many challenges, he went on to become a great man who wasn’t afraid to stand up for what he believed in.”
  • In the next paragraph, you can summarize what you wrote about why you find him so interesting. For example, “This great man inspires me every time I read about him. I hope that I too can stand up for the right thing if I am ever in a position to do so, even if it is difficult or scary to do so.”

Step 3 Finish your first draft by writing the introduction.

  • For example, you can say, “In this essay, I will be discussing a man that nearly everyone has heard of. He was a minister who became famous during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s for standing up for the rights of not only African Americans, but for all human beings.”
  • After you introduce your person, you will state what you will be telling your reader about this person. For example, “In this essay, Martin Luther King Jr.’s life will be discussed beginning with his birth in Georgia, to his travels to Germany where he officially began to be known as ‘Martin,’ to his untimely death in 1968.”
  • Don’t give everything away in the introduction. Think of the introduction like a movie preview. You want to give enough information to get the reader interested, but not so much information that they will already know everything else written in the essay before they read it.

Step 4 Write a second draft.

  • Don’t expect the second draft to come out perfectly either. The purpose of the second draft is to fix up any major spelling mistakes or grammar errors, and to see how you feel about the information you’ve written now that it’s all out there.
  • A second draft is what you will give to anyone who has offered to proof read your essay, so make sure that it is easy to read. It is best to have this version typed and double-spaced so it will be easy for whoever is helping you to make notes on things you can improve in your final draft.

Editing Your Essay

Step 1 Ask someone to proofread your essay.

  • For example, a good proofreader might point out to you that your paragraph about the death of your person might be better if you put it before your paragraph which talks about the legacy this person left behind.
  • Try asking a classmate to read your essay. It's a win-win for both of you because you can offer to read their essay in return. Meet up a few days after reading to talk about errors and ways to make each of your papers better.
  • If the person has done a good job, they may have a lot of things to say about your paper. Try not to take anything bad they say about your paper personally. They're not trying to make you feel bad, they just want to help you get a good grade.
  • Give them a physical copy of the paper that is double-spaced. This will make it easy for them to make corrections and write notes on your paper.

Step 2 Proofread the essay on your own.

  • Make notes as you read in a bright colored pen on a physical copy of your paper.
  • Read your paper twice. The first time, focus on what you've written, and don't look for spelling mistakes or other grammar errors. While you're reading think about whether it is easy to follow and whether or not it makes sense. This will be the time to consider rearranging any information, adding anything extra, or removing anything that doesn't seem important.
  • Read through the article a second time to check for grammar and spelling issues. Mark any misspelled words or typos, and make a note of any awkward sentences that you want to go back and change.

Step 3 Read the essay backwards.

  • You should also read the essay out loud. Reading the essay out loud will help you find sentences that sound strange.

Step 4 Type your final draft.

  • Make sure to follow any instructions your teacher has given you about how to format the document. For example, with regard to font, font size, and line spacing.
  • By now, you should feel confident that you have a well-written paper. If you still feel unsure, you can ask a different person to read your essay to reassure yourself that you have caught any mistakes.
  • If your teacher said they don’t care about the formatting, then stick to the defaults of your word processing program. Generally, it is a good idea to stick to font size 12 and a standard font such as Times New Roman. To make your paper easier to read, consider changing the line spacing to 1.5 or 2, unless your teacher has said not to do this.
  • Your teacher probably expects you to turn in a typed copy of your essay. Unless your teacher has specifically asked for handwritten papers make sure you turn in a neat, typed copy.

How to Write a Biography Essay about a Famous Person: A Comprehensive Guide

Share post:

A biography essay tells the story of a famous person’s life. It’s one of the oldest types of nonfiction literature. A biography essay is a common academic essay assignment for students in college. The essence of writing a biography about a famous individual is to provide a sketch of the person’s life in words as accurately as possible, such that a reader can visualize their true essence.

A good biography leaves an impact on the reader by inspiring greater achievement, providing encouragement, or serving as a cautionary tale. Still, there could be many details and interesting facts about a famous person that you struggle to know what to include and what to leave out. In the following post, we tell you how to write a biography about a famous person and what to include in your essay.

Writing a Biography Essay About a Famous Person: The Key Elements to Include

Basic facts about the famous person.

The center of any biography is a person, not a group of people or events. So, when writing a biography essay about a famous person, the most important step is deciding who to write about. Writing will be more interesting if your famous subject is someone that you look up to or find interesting. Also, consider the available credible sources of data when selecting a subject to ensure they are accurate and reliable.

Like any other essay, a biography essay must have a central theme or idea that will guide the content and structure of the paper. Many revolutionary biography writers who wrote about notable historical figures composed revolutionary biographies by sticking to a specific theme. Remember, you can only identify the main idea after thorough research and reflection of the famous person who inspires you.

Character traits

Another key element of a biography essay is characterization. Before you start writing, you must understand the subject’s character, and identify the ones you want to emphasize in your essay. By the end of the biography, your audience should have a clear picture of the famous person you’re writing about. Better still, they should feel like they know the subject just as they know their friend.

Significant events

A biography essay involves turning a person’s real life into a story, so students should carefully consider what they choose to include in the paper. The events you write about will form the plot of your essay, so consider how they contribute to the main idea or theme. As the writer, it’s your responsibility to guide the reader on characters and events that represent the life of the person, and ultimately the message of your biography.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Write a Biography about a Famous Person

Choose a famous subject.

The subject is the famous person whose life, life experiences, and personality you will address in your essay. Since you’ll need to research them, they need to be someone who you can find books, articles, newspapers, and magazines about. Also, ensure that you have personal interest in the person so that you’re motivated to conduct in-depth research about them. That will make it easy to identify significant events, characters, and themes to write about.

2: Conduct research

Biography essays require huge investment in research time on the selected subject. The more you research, the more you’ll learn about the person and opinions of different scholars, making your paper more objective. An ideal biography essay about famous person contains unknown facts, controversial opinions, and specific dates that are significant to the person’s life.

3: Prepare an outline

An outline helps you to develop a balanced and complete narrative of the subject’s times and life. A biography essay follows the standard five paragraph format, which includes an introduction with thesis statement, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

However, many students struggle to put ideas in a logical order or write a biography essay. If you can’t cope with creating an outline and writing a top-notch paper for college, contact a write my essay service like CustomWritings which has certified professional writers in 80+ disciplines who can craft for you a winning biography essay within a specified deadline.

4: Write your introduction paragraph

As the starting point of your essay, the introduction should instantly capture the reader’s attention. To hook your readers, you can start with any of the following styles:

  • Start with a famous quote by or about the subject.
  • Cite an anecdote about them.
  • State an incredible achievement by the famous person you admire.

After the hook, describe basic facts about the person’s identity, such as name, place of birth, relationships, and education.

5: Develop a strong thesis statement

The thesis statement is a unique observation you’ve made about the person that will shape the rest of the essay. Given that the rest of the essay will hang on your thesis statement, pay careful attention when developing it. For example, in a biography essay about Marilyn Monroe, you can have a thesis that states, “Although Marilyn Monroe was rich and famous, she lived a troubled life with many self-destructive habits that ultimately led to her tragic and untimely death.”

6: Write body paragraphs

This is where you write all the information you gathered in your research. When you write a biography essay about a famous person, make sure that you stick to the main idea or theme. Discuss ideas chronologically from childhood to maturity, only including important details that demonstrate their character and temperament, both positive and negative. Accomplishment should also include the impact on society to date. Lastly, all the pieces of information should be connected and flow flawlessly.

7: Write a conclusion

This is the last paragraph in which you draw a conclusion about the subject. Don’t simply restate your thesis or points discussed in the body. Instead, highlight the most important events and experiences. Try to tie their legacy to modern life by saying how their contributions are relevant today, who they influenced, and what they are remembered for. You can also provide a candid review of how the person has influenced your life.

8: Proofread and edit

After completing the draft essay, it’s time to proceed with proofreading and editing mistakes. Editing involves reviewing sentence construction, flow, structure, and factual inconsistencies. After editing the paper, proofread by reviewing language and grammatical errors, including punctuations and spelling. Reading aloud biography essays and other papers you have written can make it easier to identify errors. You can also give your paper to another person to get honest feedback.

The Key to a Good Biography Essay is to Show, Not Tell

Unlike other essays, a biography essay requires vivid and engaging details that bring out the person’s true essence. Knowing what to include makes it easier to craft a good essay. Include factual details and follow the correct essay structure to create a biography worthy of the famous person you admire.

How to Write a Biography: 8 Steps for a Captivating Story

by Yen Cabag | 10 comments

how to write a biography header image

We’ll just say it: biographies don’t often make the most exciting reads, especially when they’re loaded with fact after fact, and not much insight or narrative.

However, when the writer is passionate and highly knowledgeable about the story they’re telling, a biography can be just as riveting as an action-packed novel.

If you’ve considered writing a biography about the life of someone you admire or whose story interests you, you’ll definitely want to do a thorough job. The steps and information presented below will help ensure that your writing is accurate and well organized.

What Is a Biography?

A biography is an account of a person’s life that includes facts and anecdotes from that person’s experiences. They can be great resources for studying the lives of fascinating figures, both living and dead.

Most biographies are written to tell the stories of famous or highly influential people, such as politicians, celebrities, athletes, and billionaires.

But biographies can also be written about ordinary people who have made an extraordinary impact on others, even if they are not extremely well-known prior to publication.

A biography may come with the label “authorized” if the subject or their family members gave the author permission to write the story. “Unauthorized” biographies are also frequently published, but without the permission or input of the subject, which may leave the authors subject to legal action.

Difference Between a Biography and an Autobiography

A biography is an account of the life of someone other than the author. An autobiography is an account of the author’s own life. However, the definition may be blurry in cases when a ghostwriter helps someone write his autobiography.

A ghostwriter is a writer who helps another person in creating a book. This help may come in the form of collaboration, or the ghostwriter might do all the writing themselves. When a person wants to write their autobiography but is not exactly gifted at writing, they may ask a ghostwriter to help create it.

What Should a Biography Include?

Biographies usually share more intimate information about their subjects, compared to what is generally included in a feature article. The most interesting things typically included in a biography are:

  • the subject’s family background and childhood
  • stories that illustrate their personality
  • their motivations, goals, and achievements
  • their key relationships, such as their siblings, spouse, children, best friends, colleagues, mentors, rivals
  • their hidden fears or desires
  • stories and anecdotes about their experiences, especially those that illustrate the traits you wish to highlight

How Do You Start Writing a Biography?

When you write a biography, you’re exploring the details of a person’s life, including their thought processes and emotions.

This means that you must be able to write with care and tact. You will also be analyzing the events in your subject’s life and explaining why they do certain things to draw connections between those experiences.

The length of a biography can vary greatly. It might be very short, and divulge only the basic facts of a person’s life.

However, for most published works, biographies offer a deeper analysis, including many stories and examples that demonstrate the person’s unique character.

1. Choose your subject.

Ideally, your subject should be someone whose life deeply interests you. Note, however, that this doesn’t mean you have to like the person. Many biographies are written from a critical viewpoint, in which the subject’s flaws and mistakes are analyzed.

Keep in mind that your feelings about the person will affect the way you write, and consequently influence how readers view the work.

If your subject is still living, you should make every effort to interview them (or at least their representatives). When it comes to writing a biography, a you are writing about someone alive or not, the process remains the same, except for the fact that you can still interview a living person.

An important part of choosing your subject is obtaining their permission. You need to ask the person whether or not they agree to let you write their biography.

If they agree, it’s all well and good! If they don’t agree and you proceed anyway, you might be subject to legal action should your subject decide to pursue it.

If the person you choose to write about is dead, you will not need to ask anyone’s permission.

2. Find out the basic facts about your subject’s life.

If the person you are writing about is famous, you will likely be able to find certain details online, such as their birthday, family background, and other basic information. The same holds true even if he is not famous but you know him personally.

Then, you can use news articles or similar sources to help you decide which part of their life interests you the most.

3. Conduct thorough research.

For research, biographers rely on both primary and secondary sources.

  • Primary sources : If you are writing about a living person, primary sources might include interviews with that person, their family members, friends, and colleagues, as well as letters, journals, diaries, speeches, newspaper accounts, school records or reports, and other documents.
  • Secondary sources : If you write about a famous person, chances are there are already other books written about them. Biographies that another person has written fall under secondary sources, as do reference books and histories that support your information.

Because a good biography will include stories from the subject’s experiences, be sure to collect personal stories and even anecdotes.

These will surely bring greater credibility to your writing, and make your subject more relatable to your readers.

How to Write a Biography

Now that you’ve done your research, it’s time to begin writing the biography, starting with a detailed outline to help you organize your idea and information.

4. Write an outline of your biography.

Once you’ve figured out the direction you want to take with your biography, an outline will help you organize your thoughts and information so you’ll be better prepared to start writing.

Create a bullet point for every main theme that you want to include which may correspond to one chapter. Then write another bullet, indented to the right, for each different sub-topic within the main theme. These will be the different sections inside each chapter.

You have several options for writing your outline:

  • Chronological order : Many biographers go for a chronological account of their subject’s life, from the day they were born, through their childhood, school days, career, and so on.
  • Specific time periods : Another way of outlining is to group certain time periods around a specific theme. For example, your subject’s difficult childhood may be lumped together into a theme entitled “Early Adversity.”
  • Thematic : Other biographers outline their chapters by themes. For example, a theme on your subject’s generous heart may include examples from across his life, while a theme on his intellectual prowess may also portray his academic achievements across many years.

5. Start writing your first draft.

Now that you have all your information collected, start to write your story based on the outline you prepared in step 4. Some writers prefer to write one chapter after another, while others don’t mind jumping around chapters. Experiment and find what works best for you.

When you start to write, don’t worry too much about editing or fact-checking. At this point, just concentrate on crafting the story in an interesting way that will hook your readers.

6. Take a break before proofreading and fact checking your first draft.

You will likely be excited to start editing once you’ve finished your first draft, but you’ll actually be doing yourself a favor by taking a break for at least a few days.

In this way, you’ll be able to return to work with a fresh set of eyes, which will leave you better able to catch errors and see your work from a new perspective.

Once you feel ready, start scanning your work for typos, cut and paste paragraphs you want to transfer, and even eliminate whole passages that don’t seem to play an important role in the story.

This is also the best time to fine-tune and fact check your writing .

7. Get another perspective.

Once you have smoothed out everything you can in your work, now is the time to get someone else’s feedback.

Whether you intend to publish your biography or not, it’s always a good idea to get feedback from someone who is skilled in writing.

Their comments will not only improve your biography, but also provide valuable tips for improving your writing in the future.

8. Send a copy to your subject.

Consider sending a copy of your manuscript to the person whose life you wrote about in your book.

The copy may serve as a thank-you gift, but also, if you intend to publish your work, you will need them to approve, as well as fact check, everything you put into the story.

Publish Your Biography

Congratulations! Now that you’ve finished writing your biography, you should start to work on getting your book published.

Great advice- Thank you !! have a question: if you write and publish a biography about someone who is still alive, what percentage of your profit(s) should you give them? (if I have their permission, and they paid nothing to publish- I did)?

Clayton

This really helped my homework.

Virginia Ann Schafer

what is the best way to record interviews from your subject? tape? other technical equipment?

Kaelyn Barron

Hi Virginia, it really depends on your preferences. These days there are plenty of recording apps on smart phones that allow you to take high-quality recordings, which you can take easily take anywhere with you or transfer to other devices :)

Divinia R. Jaurigue

I have been thinking to write a biography of a living person who recently became popular due to his unusual talent and gift. I found this article to be a very informative and helpful guide. I hope I can get going one of these days. My big hurdle is how I can interview this person as I don’t have my own office to interview him and he is only around for a few months. By” around” I mean he travels all over the country. Thank you very much for your article. I will appreciate any helpful advice.

Hi Divinia, I’m glad you found the article helpful! You could always conduct phone interviews or video calls :) may not be exactly the same as face to face, but it can get you the information and insights you need :)

hal REEVES

Thank you for a very inciteful article. I’m in the process of writing a biography of a former country music superstar who lost everything due to anger issues and alcoholism, only to recover and become a follower of Jesus, then start his own church and ministry. My question is, when an author writes a biography about another person, how do they decide how to share the proceeds of the book? Thank you very much for your time and advice.

Hi Hal, thanks for your comment! I’m not an expert on that, but I’m pretty sure there’s no rule that you have to share any of the proceeds if you write a biography about another person. Now, if you were helping that person to ghostwrite their own autobiography, that would be different, but still settled between the two of you.

Bobby Burns

This article is very useful and well organized. Writing the biography sounds like a fun project to undertake. The late James Baldwin spoke about writers writing something they’ve never written. I’ve published an autobiography and after reading your piece, I feel confident in writing a biography of a person who’s still alive. Thank you for your advice.

Thanks Bobby, we’re so glad you found Yen’s article helpful!

Describe a famous person you admire and why.

You should say:

  • Who is the famous person you admire, and what is their background and accomplishments?
  • How did you first come to know about this person, and what inspired you to admire them?
  • What specific qualities or attributes of this person do you find most admirable, and how have they influenced you personally?
  • Can you share any anecdotes or moments from their life or work that exemplify why you admire them so much?

Sample Answer 1 (Band 7):

The famous person I admire greatly is Mahatma Gandhi. He was a renowned leader in the Indian independence movement and a champion of nonviolent resistance. There are several reasons why I hold him in high regard.

Mahatma Gandhi’s life was marked by his tireless efforts to end British colonial rule in India. What I admire most about him is his unwavering commitment to nonviolence, even in the face of oppression and violence from the British authorities. He demonstrated that peaceful protests and civil disobedience can bring about significant social and political change.

Furthermore, Gandhi’s ability to mobilize and inspire millions of people is truly remarkable. His leadership in the Salt March and the Quit India Movement, among others, showcased his capacity to unite people for a common cause. His dedication to the principles of truth, nonviolence, and simplicity served as a guiding light for millions.

In addition, Gandhi’s impact extends far beyond India’s borders. His ideas on nonviolence have influenced civil rights movements and leaders worldwide, including Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. His philosophy of “satyagraha” or truth force has left a profound mark on global movements for justice and equality.

In conclusion, I admire Mahatma Gandhi for his unwavering commitment to nonviolence, his ability to inspire and mobilize masses, and his global influence on movements for justice and equality. He has not only been a pivotal figure in India’s history but has also left a lasting legacy on the world stage.

Sample Answer 2 (Band 9):

The person I profoundly admire is Albert Einstein, a brilliant physicist known for his groundbreaking theories of relativity and contributions to the field of theoretical physics. My admiration for him is not only because of his remarkable intellect but also because of the profound impact he had on our understanding of the universe.

Einstein’s most famous equation, E=mc^2, is a fundamental equation in physics that relates mass to energy, revolutionizing our understanding of the physical world. His theory of relativity challenged conventional wisdom and reshaped the way we think about space, time, and gravity. I greatly admire his ability to think beyond the boundaries of contemporary knowledge and question the status quo.

Moreover, Einstein’s personal attributes, such as his relentless curiosity and perseverance, are qualities that I find truly inspirational. He faced numerous obstacles in his life, including escaping Nazi Germany during World War II, and yet he continued to pursue his scientific inquiries with unwavering determination.

In addition to his scientific contributions, Einstein was a passionate advocate for civil rights, pacifism, and world peace. His strong stance against the use of atomic weapons and his involvement in the anti-nuclear weapons movement demonstrated his commitment to the betterment of humanity.

In summary, Albert Einstein is a person I deeply admire for his intellectual brilliance, his curiosity and perseverance, and his dedication to the well-being of humanity. His legacy in the fields of physics and human rights advocacy is an enduring source of inspiration for me and countless others.

Speaking about a person you admire

England and Stoke City striker, Saido Berahino, arrived in the UK as a refugee.

B1 / B2 (Intermediate / Upper-intermediate)

Teenagers and adults, preparation.

Read this plan, and familiarise yourself with the topic.

Make copies of worksheets.

Download the podcast to play on a phone/tablet (see the downloads section on the right) or listen to it online on the podcast page.

1. Introduction

Tell your students that they are going to listen to the first part of a podcast from the Premier Skills English website. Ask them to listen and try to identify the topic of the podcast.

Play the podcast from 00.00 > 2.51.

Here is the Premier Skills English Podcast: Speaking skills - A person you admire

The topic of the podcast is a person you admire. Check your learner's understanding of admire and admiration .

2. Brainstorm

Ask your learners who Jack and Rich said they admired in the first section of the podcast (doctors, firefighters, footballers) On the board write:  Who do people admire? Ask your learners to think of seven more types of people that people might admire and to make a spidergram. Ask your students to work in groups to do this. Tell them that they have three minutes to come up with ideas.

3. Brainstorm 2

Now, ask your learners to look at their spidergrams and choose three types of people that have famous jobs (e.g. actors, singers, footballers) and think of three people that fit each category. Learners may have to add some categories if they didn't have any famous types of people in the earlier brainstorm. Ask your learners to add the names to the spidergram.

4. Discussion

Ask learners to pass their spidergrams to a different group. Give learners 5 minutes to talk about each person that is mentioned in the spidergram. Ask these questions: Do you admire him/her? Why/ Why not? Can you think of one positive characteristic to describe each person?

5. Listen 1

Ask your students to listen to the next section of the podcast  (2:52 - 4:01). Jack and Rich mention three footballers in this section. Ask learners to write down the names of three players (or all four for stronger groups)  (Jamie Vardy, Saido Berahino, Victor Moses, Dejan Lovren) , their clubs (Leicester City, Stoke, Chelsea, Liverpool) and why their story is interesting (Jamie Vardy went from a factory to the Premier League and the other three were refugees as children).  If your students find this difficult, you can give them the transcript so they can underline and circle the answers while they listen. Ask your learners what these players might have found difficult in their lives.

6. Worksheet 1

Show your students the vocabulary worksheet. Tell them to read the statements at the top which are from the part of the transcript that they have just listened to. Ask them to explain the sentences to a partner.

Tell them to complete the matching activity on the worksheet. Ask them if they would use any of the adjectives to describe the footballers that Rich and Jack spoke about.

7. Listen 2

Ask your students to listen to the next section of the podcast  (4:01 - 7:33). Rich talks in more detail about one particular footballer. Ask your students to think about the following questions as they listen and to discuss them, in pairs, after they listen: What's the player's name? Where is he from? What was his early life like? What challenges has he faced? What's his life like now?

Ask them to listen again but this time they have to note down the adjectives they hear which are used to describe Antonio Valencia (brave, determined, ambitious, shy, independent, self-reliant) . If you have a weaker class, you may want to give learners the transcript and they can circle the adjectives as they hear them.

8. Worksheet 2

Go back to your earlier definitions of admire and admiration. Point out the difference between the verb and the noun and how they are used in the podcast. You could get learners to notice the difference for themselves using the transcript.

Give out worksheet 2 which focuses on word building and the adjectives that were mentioned in the podcast and how they can be changed and used as nouns.

9. Your turn

Ask your learners to go back to their earlier brainstorms. Each learner should choose a famous person they admire. Give them 5 minutes to write notes - they should write as much as they know about their chosen person. Ask them to choose three or four adjectives from worksheet 2 and ask them to think about why they admire this person.

Ask learners to present their person to a partner and to talk about why they admire them. Encourage the listener to ask questions to try to find out more about the person.

10. Homework

Learners find out more information about their person and give a group presentation the following week or they write an article about why they admire this person.  Alternatively, they could write their responses as a comment on the Premier Skills English Podcast page: Speaking skills - A person you admire .

[IELTS Speaking] Describe a Famous Person

Posted by David S. Wills | Oct 15, 2017 | IELTS Tips , Listening | 0

[IELTS Speaking] Describe a Famous Person

In part two of the IELTS speaking exam, you may be asked to describe a famous person . You will of course be given a minute to think about your answer and make some notes . Then you have two minutes to talk. But what things should you say? How should go attempt to describe a famous person?

All of this will be discussed in this article.

Table of Contents

Cue card: describe a famous person, how to make notes, vocabulary for describing famous people, sample band 9 answer.

You will be given a cue card with information that you must address in your speech. Before attempting to answer, you must make sure you fully understand the question and all the things you have to talk about. Don’t rush in and start speaking about any famous person. (Check out our lesson on describing a sportsperson .)

Here are some of the variations on the topic of describing famous people:

  • Describe a famous person in your country.
  • ……………………………………. you’d like to meet.
  • ……………………………………. you admire.
  • ……………………………………. you are interested in.

There are plenty of other options. Make sure you pay attention to the second part and make reference to it, and of course talk about all the points you are required to mention. To do this successfully, you must make appropriate notes.

In the IELTS speaking test part 2 , you don’t have much time to make notes, so you must do it efficiently . Don’t attempt to write any full sentences. Just note down ideas and vocabulary. These should help you to structure your talk and remember any important words. Don’t write down anything unnecessary or it will just cost you valuable time.

Note-taking is quite a personal process and you should do whatever works best for you. This might mean doing a mind-map, or perhaps writing an ordered list. Maybe you like to sketch ideas or associate words. Whatever helps you remember is fine. Just be sure to write quickly as you only have one minute .

Once your notes are written, you should be ready to talk. Work through your notes slowly and calmly, elaborating on each point slightly. You only have to talk for 1-2 minutes, so don’t worry. The biggest mistake students make at this point is talking too fast and finishing in less than a minute. Practice speaking from notes at home to counteract this stress.

In IELTS, it’s important to use precise vocabulary and that means your language will depend on the person you choose to talk about. Describing Lady Gaga, for example, would require very different language from describing Joe Biden!

However, here are some useful words and phrases that might help you talk about famous people:

You can find some useful adjectives for describing people here . You might also want to read some articles or Wikipedia pages about famous people and make notes on useful language that you find. This is a great way to get ideas as well.

Answering the Question

By now you should have chosen a person you wish to describe, analysed the question to decide what you need to say, and written some appropriate notes. Therefore, it is now time to start speaking. Here’s an example question and answer to help you:

Tell us about a famous person you would like to meet. You should say: who is he/ she why do you want to meet him/ her why he/she is famous and explain what would you do if you meet him/ her.
A famous person I’d like to meet is Bryan Cranston . He’s an American actor who is best-known for his role as Walter White in the famous TV show, Breaking Bad . Actually, Bryan Cranston has appeared in many TV shows and movies, including a really funny show that he did before Breaking Bad called Malcolm in the Middle . However, I think for most people he’s always going to be identified with the character of Walter White, the chemistry teacher who turned into a drug dealer. His performance in that show was so iconic that he will forever be remembered not just by fans but anyone who knows anything about American TV. I want to meet him not just because he’s a great actor but also because I’ve heard him give so many interviews and he seems like a really great guy. He has amazingly funny stories to tell and he always gives so much of his time and energy to his fans. I don’t really know what I’d do if I met Bryan Cranston because I’ve never actually met a famous person before. However, I’d probably shake his hand and tell him I really admire his work on screen and on stage. If he was willing to talk, I’d ask him about making Breaking Bad and I’m sure he’d have some wonderful stories to tell me.

Here is a video of me giving the above sample answer. You can try to copy my style of speech. It might help you with pronunciation issues and fluency.

In the above speech, I’ve addressed all the points from the cue card, although not necessarily in order. I first said who Bryan Cranston is and then explained why he is famous, before moving on to why I want to meet him and what I would do in that situation. This seemed to me a more natural structure and easier to talk about. If you talk randomly on different points without connecting it in your head, you will find it harder to talk for a long time.

You can find out how to start a part-2 answer here . There is more guidance on structuring your answer here .

I’ve highlighted some useful language in bold, which I will explain below:

  • eg “who is best known for her hit song, ‘Shake it Off'”
  • eg “who is best known for his masterpiece, ‘Animal Farm'”
  • “iconic” – essentially, this just means very famous – ie a person who has become an icon
  • eg “I like him not just because he’s a good guy but because he seems really interesting.”

It’s really important in the IELTS speaking test part 2 that you prepare your answer. You should make some useful notes to help you talk, and then speak slowly and calmly, elaborating upon your notes as you speak. When describing famous people for IELTS, remember to include some appropriate adjectives and adverbs for descriptive purposes, and always give reasons and examples to justify your statements. This will boost your IELTS speaking score significantly.

IELTS Speaking Cue Card

a biography about a famous person you admire

Describe a person you admire the most

Who is this person?

How you know him/her?

What qualities he/she has?

And explain why you admire this person?

Many people have inspired me in my life, but the person I admire the most is my mother. She is a strong woman who held me close and safe even in the most difficult times. Not only is she a great parent but also a remarkable teacher. She teaches science to high school students and has conducted many workshops to demonstrate the use of eco-friendly products in our daily lives. Moreover, she believes in reuse and recycling methods; she makes flowerpots out of used bottles and grows plants in them.

She is a kind-hearted lady who always lends a helping hand to anyone in need. She conducts scholarship drives to help students who cannot afford tuition fees which I find inspiring. Besides, she has a great sense of humor and can turn a bad day into a good one. I share all of my  woes  with her as she has a  jovial  nature and always tries to understand a situation from my perspective instead of jumping to conclusions. This has helped me not to lie about anything in general and to be upfront about my thoughts and feelings.

Although we sometimes have disagreements, we have an undying bond that connects us. I have learned to be compassionate and patient because of my mother and I am proud to have such an inspiring woman in my life. I aspire to be independent and have my own identity as she does.

Vocabulary:

  • Remarkable- exceptional
  • Woes- troubles
  • Jovial- cheerful and friendly
  • Compassionate- showing sympathy for others

Part 3 Follow Up - Questions & Answers

1. do you think people who are famous are more admired than others.

On an average, I think you're likely to find that you consider at least most of them good, generous, hospitable, caring people. You might be tempted to think those people really are just ‘better’ people, because maybe being a ‘better’ person makes you more likely to be rich and successful. You would be wrong. The truth is that being successful makes people see you as a better person. Why? Because our brains are hard-wired to indiscriminately make the assumption that good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people.

2. Which celebrities, according to you, should be admired more? Politicians, authors, sports person or movie star?

In my perspective, if any celebrity is genuinely concerned about the well being of his fellow humans and goes out of the way to contribute towards their welfare, then he or she deserves to be admired irrespective of the field he or she is in.

3. Do you think that scientists or army men should be admired more?

4. Do you think people also see the weaknesses of the people they follow or they just avoid them?

As human beings each and every one of us has got our own strengths and weaknesses. The same is true in the case of celebrities too. If a person has attained celebrity status through his good nature, then his or her fans try to overlook his or her weaknesses too and don’t make a big deal out of it.

SAMPLE ANSWER-

I think we all look for certain qualities in a person we admire or follow. I have always been a huge admirer of Amitabh Bachchan. He is a Bollywood superstar and globally recognized cinema thespian. Being one of the senior most celebrity of actor, he is 76 years of age but his energetic performance does not reflect the age.

Amitabh Bachchan’s tremendous universal appeal and influencing personality makes him top the list of World’s Most Admired People. His qualities and down to earth nature are the reasons why people regard him as one of the greatest actor any film industry has ever produced. When I read an article on his biography, I came to know about the struggles he has gone through during the early days when he encountered rejection and flopped movies. Even after being a global personality, Mr. Bachchan is well known for his punctuality and giving his 100% in all tasks. Age is just a number for him as with increasing age, he’s getting even better with his performance on screen.

Mumbai is the film capital of our country and Amitabh Bachchan belonging to India lives there. He lives there in a mansion where fans religiously stand outside on weekends just to get a glimpse of the legend.

I admire Mr. Bachchan not only because he’s a great actor, but for his contribution to society as well. He is a social activist. His donations to various non-profit organizations and reliefs funds are also worth a praise. Mr. Bachchan has also been honored with popular Indian awards, which makes me admire and respect him even more.

SAMPLE ANSWER TWO-

Famous persons become personalities or stars for the bourgeois society. They are intentionally broadcasted on media exhibiting their panache and lifestyle, in general. Most of us feel highly immersed in their charisma and get mesmerized by their auras. People even endeavour to impersonalize those famous characters. I, being no exception, am devotedly interested in that genius maestro of cricket and considered God by Indian cricket lovers, Sachin Tendulkar. I used to watch and play cricket since 1980’s but beginning from 90’s and for the next fifteen years, what I witnessed was a phenomenon whenever he used to be on pitch.

No, unfortunately I could never grab that opportunity of meeting the cricket doyen, but I was always in a state surpassing even anxiety and thrill, whenever I Imagined that moment. Still, I have not yet belied my hopes and I am very optimistic of meeting him some day.

Out of my curiosity for this wizard, I read and heard about him a lot. Sachin Sir hails from a middle class Brahmin family near Dadar, Mumbai. His father was a poet and mother was working with Insurance industry. He took up cricket at a very young age of 11, getting admission in India cricket Club. He has represented Bombay domestically and India internationally for nearly 25 years. He made his international test debut against Pakistan’s menacing bowling attack, when he was just 16. Later on, he traversed almost every milestone and earned immense fame and love for setting his own new landmarks in cricket.

Well, his courteous and humble personality, despite being Sachin, has always taken the wide applause everywhere. His focus and elegance in his play of game is apparently superhuman. His adroitness and blitzkrieg reflexes are awesome. His intelligence and temperament sets him apart from rest of the contemporaries.

Follow-up questions.

Q. 1 How do you think a person becomes famous?

Sample answer: Success journey to fame, wealth and power comes at a great expense. One has to be passionately involved in an action to bear good fruits. Practice, dedication, watchfulness and unwavering hope for the goal makes a person successful and success brings fame as an appendix.

Q. 2 How do you think about those who are famous for notoriety?

Sample answer: Actually, the people who get the news attention because of their misdeeds are not famous, they are rather infamous. This brings a sham for him and all those who are associated with him. Path has prominent importance in reaching to a destination. Even though infamous people earn money but they never get that respect and dignity from society.

Q. 3 Do you want to get famous? If yes, then in which field?

Sample answer: Yes, I also want to get famous. But here I should be judgemental about my talents and passions. Because, until and unless, you have an alloy of both, there are only bleak chances of success and fame. I think writing is my passion and I possess apt talent too. So, I think, with the consistent pursuance of my passion, one day I shall be a famous person.

Q. 4 Do you think there is a change in attitude of people after becoming famous?

Sample answer: We can say that, attitude inversion, is a widespread common characteristic witnessed in celebrities, nowadays. They float hefty airs around them and apparently believe in ostentation. Special attention down poured on them by public imbibes an arrogant artificiality in them. But, I think that, there do exist famous people who still live a humble and courteous life and remain polite in their demeanour and Sachin is one of them.
