Post L.O.C., LAKSHYA, DEEWAAR and AB TUMHARE HAWALE WATAN SATHIYO, Indo-Pak themes, especially those that abound in jingoism and

indulge in Pak-bashing, are shunned by moviegoers in India and the Asian community abroad.

But 1971 is different…

It narrates the story of Indian war prisoners across the border who break free and set out on a perilous journey to their motherland. The film

succeeds in highlighting the plight of P.O.W.s who have been languishing in Pakistani jails/camps, leading a life of anonymity.

Sure, 1971 is about India and Pakistan. But the film is not about war per se . It begins in 1977 in Multan [Pakistan], six years after India and

Pakistan had fought a war and throws light on Indian defense personnel who long to be free, pine to return to their motherland, to their families.

The film raises a pertinent question/issue that remains unresolved to this date: Why are Indian defense personnel still being held captive in

If the subject material of 1971 moves you on a humanitarian level, the handling of the subject succeeds in bringing the core issue to the forefront.

For those who're completely clueless about one of the after-effects of wars, 1971 serves as a complete eye-opener.

It's often said that the best of stories/concepts evaporate into thin air if entrusted in wrong/incompetent hands. Thankfully, 1971 does justice to the

material. After you've watched 1971, you can't help but conclude that debutante director Amrit Sagar is a brilliant storyteller.

Certain films should never be adjudged on the basis of their box-office evaluation. They're beyond box-office. 1971 is one of those films. Well

researched and painstakingly captured on celluloid, 1971 is a brave effort by all counts. It opens your eyes to a fact that many of us never knew

1971 movie review in hindi

As a cinematic experience, 1971 is a must for every moviegoer who craves for a break from the humdrum masala that unfailingly hits the screens

week after week. But more importantly, watch 1971 for those who protect and guard our nation so that we, the commoners, can sleep peacefully.

This one deserves a salute!

A band of six Indian prisoners of war -- Major Suraj Singh [Manoj Bajpai], Captain Jacob [Ravi Kissen], Subedar Ahmed [Chitaranjan Giri], Captain

Kabir [Kumud Mishra], Flight Lt. Ram [Manav Kaul] and Flight Lt. Gurtu [Deepak Dobriyal] -- decide to make the most daring escape from a Pakistani

camp to the Indian border. What ensues is a gut-wrenching chase, across the unyielding terrain, where these men brave inhuman weather

conditions and the constant threat of the Pakistani officials on the hunt for the P.O.W.s.

They have to rely in this dangerous mission on each other, their undying sprit and their love for their homeland.

1971 succeeds as a film primarily because it highlights the issue most convincingly. In fact, debutante director Amrit Sagar remains faithful to the

subject and not once does the film deviate into sub-plots or gets into the flashback mode to depict the background of the six protagonists. Also,

let's get this right, this one's no documentary, it's an engaging cinematic experience.

Generally, 'war movies' fall into one of two categories: Heroic tales of glory and valor or biopics. 1971 is neither. Instead, it's a tale of human courage

and sacrifice. It's a gripping, disturbing and powerful film.

The first hour of 1971 is entirely devoted to establishing the characters and gives the viewer a fair idea of the plight of P.O.W.s languishing in

Pakistani jails/camps. Sure, it takes time to get involved in the goings-on because, as a film, 1971 enters a seldom-entered territory. In fact, things

don't perk up till minutes before the intermission, before the explosion takes place.

Post-interval, 1971 comes into true form. The five P.O.W.s escape from the Pakistani camp, located close to the L.O.C. and from thereon, it's one

riveting experience. The wild chase that ensues and the outcome to the story leave you stunned and speechless.

The grit and determination of the P.O.W.s is inspiring. The Pakistani armed forces comb the streets and hills, searching for the escaped Indians and

the entire second hour, right till the finale, takes your breath away. The death of four of five protagonists is brilliantly depicted. In fact, the

confrontation at the L.O.C. and one of the P.O.W.'s body being dragged back to Pakistan are remarkably executed. Piyush Mishra's brilliant writing

coupled with the director's execution is visible in every frame.

Amrit Sagar is a director to watch! The debutante has the courage to swim against the trend. Instead of taking the easy way out by making a masala

film and padding it with stars, Amrit needs a pat for opting for an unconventional theme and casting actors, not stars. Besides, the director knows

the grammar of film-making right. Not only is the content powerful [screenplay: Piyush Mishra], the film stands out in the technical departments as

Amrit gets major help from three other departments -- background music [Akash Sagar], cinematography [Chirantan Das] and thrills [Sham

Kaushal]. Akash Sagar's background score is exceptional and gives the film an international tinge. Chirantan Das' camerawork is outstanding.

Although a number of films have been shot at the picturesque Kullu-Manali, the film bears a stunning look. The hilly terrains and the snow-capped

mountains have a sweeping effect. Sham Kaushal's action scenes as well as the chase are topnotch. It wouldn't be erroneous to state that the

chase sequences are amongst the best witnessed on the Hindi screen.

Manoj Bajpai and Ravi Kissen may be the most known entities in its cast, but the film doesn't belong to Manoj or Ravi alone. It belongs to all six

protagonists. Manoj is in form after a long, long time. Sure, he is a fine actor, but the level of performance is very high this time. But the actor to

watch out for is Kumud Mishra. There's just one word to describe his performance -- Magnificent! Watch him in every sequence, with Manoj or with

the other protagonists, and you'd agree that the actor can light fire in water!

Deepak Dobriyal, who proved his mettle in OMKARA, delivers yet another gem of a performance in this film. He is terrific. Manav Kaul is another

talent that's bound to go places. Extremely energetic and confident, the actor leaves a tremendous impact, especially in the pre-climax when he

takes on the Pakistanis.

Ravi Kissen is perfect. After TERE NAAM, this is another performance that works because it is natural to the core. Chitaranjan Giri makes an impact

in a brief role. Piyush Mishra is first-rate. The actress -- head of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan -- is commendable. The actor -- Pakistani

Major -- is very good.

On the whole, 1971 is a well-made film with an excellent second half as its trumpcard. But there are four factors that go against it: Multiple releases

this week and also next week, the examination period, the World Cup fever [cricket mania] and also the fact that the film bears a 'war film' look. Its

fate, therefore, will depend on a strong word of mouth.

4 Reasons Why Manoj Bajpayee Starrer ‘1971’ Just Became A Superhit, 13 Years After Its Release

Reasons Why Manoj Bajpayee Starrer ‘1971’ Just Became A Superhit, 13 Years After Its Release

1971 was a 2007 directorial movie debut by Amrit Sagar. Set against the backdrop of the 1971 India-Pakistan war for Bangladesh's independence from West Pakistan, the film went on to win the  National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi at the 55th National Film Awards.

However, not many know that this riveting tale about the lives of Indian Prisoners of War (PoW) in Pakistan existed in the film domain, because it failed to publicize itself well-enough around the time of its release.

© Sagar Arts Productions

But those who watched the movie, swore by it. Right from the screenplay, to the background score and performances, viewers hailed this as the next war-drama with the might to topple major front-runners in the domain.

Today, 13 years later after it’s release, 1971 is being declared a digital blockbuster because of its true to life representations of life and times of the 54 PoWs that the Pakistani government not only illegally detained, but also denied the very existence of.

Here are 4 major reasons why 1971 is a superhit today, and ought to have been 13 years ago as well.

Table of Contents

1. The Backstory

1971 is based on the lives of real Prisoners of War (PoW) who were detained in Pakistan after the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war which was fought to establish a new country, Bangladesh. The film not only uncovers how cunningly the Pakistani government manipulated the situation of withholding Indian PoW in its territory but also tries to throw light on the plight of those Indian defense personnel held in Pakistan for the country’s twisted reasons.

Based on real reportage and research about 54 PoWs held captive in Pakistani jails in dire circumstances, 1971 shares these detained soldiers' stories established through multiple, real sources.

2. The Reliable Cast

One of the best aspects about this film has to be its strong ensemble cast which has trusted actors like Manoj Bajpayee, Deepak Dobriyal, Piyush Mishra, Manav Kaul, Ravi Kishan, and Kumud Mishra in the forefront. Apart from Manoj Bajpayee’s convincing performance as the man trying to lead a band of six soldiers away from the clutches of the Pakistani army and back into their motherland, Deepak Dobriyal and Ravi Kishan’s performance will win you over.

The authenticity and vigour to see through this personal mission comes through effortlessly through the convincing screenplay by Amrit Sagar and meticulously amazing cinematography by Chirantan Das who has worked on films like Tanu Weds Manu .

3. The Hard-Hitting Dialogues

We aren’t unaware of Piyush Mishra’s penmanship. One of the film’s highlights happens to be its strong, hard-hitting dialogues which have been written by Mishra himself. With well-worded phrases and poignant references, the dialogues in the film manage to leave the audience teary eyes on more than a couple of occasions.

Piyush Mishra has succeeded in laying bare the true emotions of both the captured Indian soldiers, but also present to his audience the true motives of the Pakistani military.

4. An Account Of History Now Forgotten

Sagar’s directorial is a visual diary of a historic event which has slowly been pushed to the backseat for most Indians today. More than a decade since its release, 1971 manages to remind us of those forgotten heroes who either gave up their lives in Pakistani prisons or still await their release almost five decades later.

The film manages to store all the details on reel for future generations to remember and for the world to understand how easily some countries give up on humanity for their political gains.

IB 71 Movie Review: Vidyut Jammwal film 71 saga around the Indo Pak standoff land despite Vishal Anupam Danny

53 Years of Anand (1971): Examining the Legacy of a Classic

Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anand, which released in March 12, 1971 remains a timeless classic in the history of Indian Cinema. Even though the film marked the 50th year of its release, the Rajesh Khanna-Amitabh Bachchan starrer has secured a perennial spot in the hearts of generations that have since evolved. Lauded by critics and audiences alike, Anand went on to win the National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, and garnered five Filmfare Awards- including Best Film. But for all the awards, Anand is a simple film. It tells the story of a terminally ill patient who refuses to await his imminent death and instead, embraces life in its entirety. In all its simplicity, Anand has truly endured and magnificently aged. Below we take a look at the Hrishikesh Mukherjee classic and how it has captured the love of an entire nation.

The premise

Anand’s illness is made very clear at the very beginning of the film. Hrishikesh Mukherjee was clear to Gulzar that he wanted his audience to know about Anand’s illness at the very outset. When the film begins, we are introduced to Bhaskar (Amitabh Bachchan) who has been felicitated with a literary award. A doctor by profession, this award seems strange to him as well, as he begins to describe how this book is a result of his diary scribblings about a reality he himself faced in his profession. The story then begins in flashback.

Related to Anand (1971): Joker and the Angry Young Man

In this way, Mukherjee makes sure that Anand’s illness is never exploited to resemble a thriller. The audience is fully aware of the end of Anand as he first makes his appearance on-screen and still hopes for a miracle to take place. Also, this revelation is important to address the thematic core of the film- as Anand himself says in one of the film’s most iconic dialogues- “Babumoshai, zindagi badi honi chahiye, lambi nhi.” (Life must be big, not long.)

The casting of Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan

1971 movie review in hindi

One of the film’s greatest strength is the camaraderie between the two principal characters, Anand and Bhaskar. These two characters are polar opposites: the former is the outgoing, spirited soul- full of energy and enthusiasm, whereas the later too self-contained and inexpressible in every matter. Together, their relationship becomes the soul of the film, beautifully explored and radiantly performed. Even the supporting characters, from Dr. Kulkarni and his supporting wife, from Bhaskar’s romantic interest Renu to the strict matron of the nursing home D’Souza- are all perfectly balanced to suit the narrative thread.

Related to Anand (1971): Masaan (2015): An Unconventional Ending

For the lead role of Anand, Rajesh Khanna was cast, although Dharmendra recently revealed that he was upset with Mukherjee’s decision and expressed his disappointment over a phone call. Even in the case for Bachchan, casting him in the role of a Bengali doctor was not the first thought for Hrishikesh Mukherjee, as Soumitra Chaterjee was initial choice. Nevertheless, Bachchan made the cut, with a dozen flops under his kitty. The success of Anand would change his career forever.

One of the strongest, most enduring power of Anand emanates from its soulful, melodious songs composed by the inimitable Salil Chowdhary. From “Jiya Lage Na” to “Zindagi kaisi he paheli haaye”, each song served its own purpose in the narrative without becoming an extension. The lyrics by Gulzar fit in beautifully, and rendered evocative moments of humanity. Who can forget these lines sung by Manna Dey : Jinhone sajaae yahaan mele/Sukh-dukh sang-sang jhele/Vahi chunakar khaamoshi/Yun chali jaae akele kahaan/Zindagi…

The intrinsic value of life

At various points in the film, several supporting characters come to know about Anand’s illness, and are shocked to witness his zest for life stay intact. Anand is a character study of a doomed individual, but simultaneously it is also an ode to the eternal quest of mankind- to relinquish life as much as possible. Anand hurries to finalize the relationship between Renu and Bhaskar, in the quest to secure happiness and joy in his friend’s life. Anand’s spirited nature, his zest for life never hides the truth about mortality. Rather it juxtaposes that idea with hope of staying alive till that last breath. He spreads a smile wherever he goes, forms connections with random individuals by referring them as his long-lost friend Murarilal. “Jab tak zinda hoon, tab tak mara nahin (I am alive until I am dead).” – is the watchword of Anand’s life, and Mukherjee’s film drives that point home with immense grace and beauty.

A genre-breaking middle cinema form

In the 70s, there was a movement in Hindi Cinema by the name of ‘middle cinema’- one that stood at the midpoint between mainstream commercial cinema and arthouse parallel cinema. Hrishikesh Mukherjee was one of the most important, as well as successful filmmakers in this genre, combining entertainment with prevalent societal issues. Anand begins on a somber note, we see Bhaskor trapped in a system of poverty and inequality, where the malnourished die without proper medical treatment and the privileged spend hundreds on the most trivial pursuit of healthy lifestyle.

Related to Anand (1971): 10 Best Hindi Films of 2020

By the time Anand enters the narrative, Bhaskor is embittered and stoic, almost cynical. Anand’s entry gives him a new perspective, and the film- a new dimension. He entertains as well as educates Anand to treat each shortcoming with a strategy and a smile. By the end, even Anand starts to believe in miracles, but realizes the importance of Anand’s perspective. The optimism does not negate reality, but synchronizes along with its hard-earned realities.

As Anand completes 50 years of release, its simplicity and clarity of thought remain as distinct as ever. One simply wonders what would Hrishikesh Mukherjee make out of the severe curtailment of content in this era? How would he respond to this generation of leaders and audiences triggered at the slightest notion of discomfort? Surely, he would drive a character like Anand-one who is blind to forces of religion and politics- home before he landed up in trouble for his disruptive attitude. Till then, one can only wonder, and cherish the gift of Anand that never ceases to exist.

Movie Review: Anand (1971)

Anand

Buy the DVD at Amazon

Anand (“Bliss”) is as happy a movie about terminal illness as you’re likely to find. Nevertheless, this classic Hindi film raises interesting questions about how healthy people should interact with the sick, and whether preemptive grief makes things worse.

The story unfolds through the diary entries of Dr. Bhaskar Banerjee (Amitabh Bachchan), a thirty-year-old cancer specialist who’s already overwhelmed by the amount of death he’s seen in his career. His own sense of futility — “Oh, God! Such frightening helplessness.” — makes him persnickety with his patients. He sees no point in giving them false hope.

Being a bachelor, Bhaskar is the logical choice to host Anand (Rajesh Khanna), a friend of a friend who wants to tour Bombay. Bhaskar and his friend and fellow doctor, Prakash (Ramesh Deo), are tasked with treating Anand, who’s suffering from terminal intestinal cancer.

Anand talks non-stop, joking with friends and strangers alike. Such relentless cheerfulness would normally grate on a man as taciturn as Bhaskar, but the doctor sees the melancholy behind Anand’s permanent grin.

While the most obvious message in the movie would seem to be “live each day to the fullest,” a more interesting theme relates to how healthy people are supposed to interact with the terminally ill. Anand knows he’s dying, yet he chooses to remain upbeat. He’d rather have fun while he’s here, and he wants his friends to be happy when they’re with him.

At one point, Anand threatens to leave rather than endure anymore of Bhaskar’s forlorn looks. The film makes a persuasive case that the ill have the right to dictate how they are treated by others. Just because our own inclination may be to mourn what we know we will lose, it doesn’t mean we should subject the person who is dying to those feelings.

More than forty years after its original release, the shots of Mumbai (then Bombay) make the city look like a very cool place to be in the early 1970s. Bachchan looks dashing, and the furnishings in Bhaskar’s house are fabulous.

The only aspects of Anand that don’t really translate to the modern-day are its aggressive musical cues (though plenty of directors still rely on them). Any time Anand gasps for breath, the sounds of an orchestra blare to ensure the audience knows that the moment is significant. The effect is more shocking than instructive, especially in cases where the music intrudes on an otherwise quiet scene.

The relatively small cast delivers great performances, particularly in regard to the way they react to Anand’s sickness. Bhaskar’s beloved, Renu (Sumita Sanyal), is rock steady, while Prakash’s wife, Suman (Seema Deo), loses her courage. Bachchan keeps the core of Bhaskar intact, opening him up to Anand — and the world — gradually.

While playing a character who’s described as a “tornado,” Rajesh Khanna carefully ensures that Anand feels realistic, rather than like some outrageous film creation. Anand is fun-loving, but not a clown. He has moments of melancholy, but he’s not harboring a dark secret. He really is just a guy who wants to be happy while he can.

Thanks to fine performances and a charming lead character, Anand is easy to watch and enjoy.

I am so glad you saw this Kathy 🙂 Anand is one of those films I can watch again and again. Well expressed as always.

Very early in the film, I thought, “This is really easy to watch.” I’m not sure if that makes sense, but I think you know what I mean, Keyur. 🙂

Well said. One of my favorite movies. If I may add – the difference between Prakash and Bhaskar in treating patients represents the dichotomy between earthly pragmatism and utopian idealism. Here is a post you may like: http://ashokbhatia.wordpress.com/2013/07/07/doctors-and-nurses-the-bollywood-version/

Thanks for linking to your article, Ashok! I really love the scene where Prakash and Bhaskar discuss their approaches to medicine because it doesn’t play out the way one expects. It seems as though the scene is setting up Prakash as a villain, but he makes such a solid case for the way he treats his patients. No, the wealthy hypochondriacs he treats don’t need the pills he prescribes, but the patients feel better as a result, and isn’t it his job to make people feel better? Besides, if he doesn’t prescribe the pills, the patients will just find another doctor who will (as Bhaskar knows from experience). Plus, their money allows Prakash to treat patients who can’t afford to pay. What a great scene among many.

So glad you finally saw this. It is one of my all time favourites. Many of the fictional characters I’ve written have in some way been influenced by Anand and Bhaskar. I wanted to name a son Hrishikesh. To my wife’s delight we only have girls. Lol.

Great Review! I agree about the musical crescendos. It was a common technique of the era. Bollywood’s own dramatic Western Saloon piano chords. Greatest movie ever! ( hyperbole )

Your wife wouldn’t go for Hrishikesha as one of the girls’ names, Shahid? 😉 The reason those musical cues bugged me so much was that the dialogue on the Blu-ray was mixed so low that I had the volume cranked. The characters would sound as though they were mumbling, then Anand would gasp for breath and BLAM! I jumped more while watching this than when I watch horror movies. 😀

Hey another in depth review. Loved it. I liked that you liked this amazing movie. If I’m not mistaken this movie is like life is beautiful. Every family sits together and watches it on tv. At least it’s true for my family. So many memories with this movie. I guess that sound problem must be in dvd. Well, the climax of movie is so damn good. Bhaskar comes back but anand os already dead and bhaskar tries to wake him up and the dound recorder starts playing. Best of hrishida.

I’m not a fan of aggressive emotional music queues in general, Parth, but I’m sure the DVD sound mix didn’t help. Thanks for pointing out that this is a great movie for the whole family.

Thanks for the great review as always, Anand is my one of the favorite movies, I have watched it 10-15 times and every time I watch this movie I find new reasons to fall in the love with this movie. I think this movie is about Bhaskar and how he changes his perspective of life from staring scene of the movie to the last scene of the movie. Lyrics of the Songs are too good and it describes life of Anand. I think it is harsh from you that you have not given 4 out 4 stars to this one. 😉

Well since you liked this dated Rajesh khanna movie may I recommend avtaar and aap ki kasam. For the record, in the overacting n hamming Bollywood arena Rajesh was comparatively realistic actor 🙂

Thanks for the recommendations, Ricky!

I think it is not only the best movie of Rajesh Khanna but it is the best movie ever directed in India. I’ll give more than 10 stars out of 10

☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

I always wonder why rajesh khanna was overlooked for the national award for his performance in Anand.

IB 71 starring Anupam Kher and Vidyut Jammwal is based on an untold story of Indian Airlines hijacking in the year 1971 before the Bangladesh Liberation War in December 71. Ganga was an old aircraft in the Indian Airlines fleet, already withdrawn from service but was re-inducted just days before the hijacking. The film highlights the role of IB (Intelligence Bureau) in the months leading to 1971 War and how behind the scenes work of IB agents contributed to India's win in the liberation of Bangladesh. A must watch to understand the contribution of our men and women from the Intelligence community.
