  • We use both  y = mx + c  and  y – b = m(x – a)
  • y = mx + c             ⇒ Use this equation if you can read ‘c’, the y intercept from the graph
  • y – b = m(x – a)     ⇒ Use this equation if you have ‘m’ & (a, b) but no ‘c’
  • m ⇒ gradient of the line
  • c ⇒ y intercept
  • (a, b) ⇒ any point on the line

  • In the Higher Maths exam you are often asked to determine the equation of the tangent .
  • The diagram below shows a line tangent to a circle – would you know how to find the equation of the tangent?
  • A tangent is a straight line perpendicular to another line (at right angles)
  • For perpendicular gradients m1m2 = -1
  • We use the equations y – b = m(x – a) or y = mx + c  to find the equation of a straight line
  • Differentiation is the rate of change of a function with respect to one of its variables
  • If we differentiate and substitute for x then this is the gradient of the tangent at that point
  • ‘ Equations of tangents ’ are in both the ‘Straight Line’ and ‘ Differentiation ’ sections of the Higher Maths course

zeta maths higher homework answers

  • Differentiating , then substituting for x is finding the gradient of the tangent at the point x
  • This is also the Rate of Change

I  have just completed my Higher Maths exam. Both the N5 and Higher Maths Online Study Packs have been absolutely invaluable. I managed to get a ‘B’ in the N5 Maths exam in 2022 and am now hoping for an ‘A’ at Higher. I would like to say thank you for providing a website like this. I am holding a conditional offer from Stirling and Strathclyde to do Maths with Teaching in 2024 and I couldn’t be more excited to becoming a Maths teacher.

Kieran – May 2023

I write to thank you for providing such a great resource for students studying for mathematics exams. As a parent its been immensely helpful to guide both my sons on their way to sitting higher maths (2nd son sitting higher maths today!). I can’t thank you enough and will pass on your reference to every parent I meet. Sincerely

Mr W McNeil – May 4th 2023

My daughter says the Higher website was really helpful. She achieved an ‘A’ for Higher Maths this year and is now undertaking Advanced Higher Maths for which she would like me to subscribe to your AH website . I shall go and do that now –  Thanks again.

Just a HUGE thank you from me – I’ve been teaching Higher Maths for about 20 years and your site has made this so much easier. Having topic by topic past paper questions, HSN notes and SQA papers all on one site is wonderful. So easy just to direct students to your amazing site! – Thank you.

Firstly, I wanted to say the materials on the new website are great.

I have just had my Prelim at Fife College for my Higher Maths evening class. It has highlighted the need to do loads of past papers before the exam. I found the worked solutions provided for the past papers in the Online Study Pack so much more helpful than the marking schemes.

The Higher Maths website is great – only £9.99 is such good value for what you get. I am feeling a lot more confident for the exam now!

Not just Straight Lines, but 70 other maths concepts covered in detail

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
