Although the little man does not like it, he agrees to do so. He begins working in right earnest but faces one difficulty. Quite often, the elf keeps asking Patrick for help during his homework.

For instance, he asks Patrick for a dictionary. After that, he asks him to look up a word and speak the spellings out loudly. Similarly, it is the same as Math or even worse. Thus, Patrick sits beside him to guide him at all times.

He goes to the library and gets books and reads them out to the little man. Thus, the elf writes down those points in his homework. Come to think of it, Patrick does the hard work himself.

When the time arrives of the final day, the elf is free to go. The results come out and Patrick scores the A grade. This leaves the classmates amazed as well as the teachers. Even his parents wonder how he turned into such a model kid.

Therefore, Patrick does actually develop a whole new attitude. While Patrick thinks that the elf completed his homework, it was actually Patrick himself completing it all along.

The story is of a boy who was not willing to do his homework. In return to the favors he had done for saving an elf life, he assigned all his homework to it. As elf wasn’t familiar with the subjects, he took the help of Patrick. Now Patrick was doing hard work in assisting the elf. At the end, he became independent and happy.

Patrick found the homework very boring. He preferred to play hockey and basketball. He was advised by the teacher to do his homework to learn better. He often realised that he hadn’t learned many things still did not change his attitude.

One day, he saw that his cat was playing with an elf. It was a tiny man, wearing a little wool shirt and short trousers. He shouted to be saved from the cat. It promised to grant Patrick a wish if he saves its life Patrick found someone to do his homework.

He felt lucky. He asked for his help till the end of the semester. Although the elf felt disgusted by the demand initially, yet it decided to help Patrick in his homework.

As elf didn’t know all the subjects he asked for help. Patrick had to read words with meanings for elf. In solving the problem of mathematics, it took help of Patrick himself. History was troublesome for elf.

Thus it involved Patrick all the time while doing his homework. Patrick was reading day and night unknowingly and in helping elf. He actually learned lots of things.

On last day of the school, the elf left secretly through the back door. It did not want to stay longer as the work was tiresome for it.

At the end of the semester, Patrick surprised everyone by scoring A grade. Actually it was achieved only through his own hard work. His teachers, parents, and friends wondered for the positive changes in his personality.

He became the inspiration for others. He did all his chores by himself. He was liked and appreciated by everyone. While helping the elf Patrick had learned to work hard and finally, the success was his not that of the elf.

P atrick never did homework. "Too boring," he said. He played baseball and basketball and Nintendo instead. His teachers told him, "Patrick! Do your homework or you won't learn a thing." And it's true, sometimes he did feel like a ding-a-ling.

But what could he do? He hated homework.

Then on St. Patrick's Day his cat was playing with a little doll and he grabbed it away. To his surprise it wasn't a doll at all, but a man of the tiniest size. He had a little wool shirt with old fashioned britches and a high tall hat much like a witch's. He yelled, "Save me! Don't give me back to that cat. I'll grant you a wish, I promise you that."

Patrick couldn't believe how lucky he was! Here was the answer to all of his problems. So he said, "Only if you do all my homework 'til the end of the semester, that's 35 days. If you do a good enough job, I could even get A's."

The little man's face wrinkled like a dishcloth thrown in the hamper. He kicked his legs and doubled his fists and he grimaced and scowled and pursed his lips, "Oh, am I cursed! But I'll do it."

And true to his word, that little elf began to do Patrick's homework. Except there was one glitch. The elf didn't always know what to do and he needed help. "Help me! Help me!" he'd say. And Patrick would have to help -- in whatever way.

"I don't know this word," the elf squeeked while reading Patrick's homework. "Get me a dictionary. No, what's even better. Look up the word and sound it out by each letter."

When it came to math, Patrick was out of luck. "What are times tables?" the elf shrieked. "We elves never need that. And addition and subtraction and division and fractions? Here, sit down beside me, you simply must guide me."

Elves know nothing of human history, to them it's a mystery. So the little elf, already a shouter, just got louder "Go to the library, I need books. More and more books. And you can help me read them too."

As a matter of fact every day in every way that little elf was a nag! Patrick was working harder than ever and was it a drag! He was staying up nights, had never felt so weary, was going to school with his eyes puffed and bleary.

Finally the last day of school arrived and the elf was free to go. As for homework, there was no more, so he quietly and slyly slipped out the back door.

Patrick got his A's; his classmates were amazed; his teachers smiled and were full of praise. And his parents? They wondered what had happened to Patrick. He was now the model kid. Cleaned his room, did his chores, was cheerful, never rude, like he had developed a whole new attitude.

You see, in the end Patrick still thought he'd made that tiny man do all his homework. But I'll share a secret, just between you and me. It wasn't the elf; Patrick had done it himself!

She then enrolled in The Bradford Academy in Massachusetts, a two-year institution. Patrick's Homework? 1. Patrick never completed his homework. “Too boring,” he remarked. He enjoyed hockey, basketball, and Nintendo. His professors said, “Patrick! Do your homework or you won’t learn.” He did occasionally feel stupid. But how? He loathed schoolwork. 2. He snatched a doll from his cat one day. It was a little guy, not a toy. He wore an old-fashioned cap and a wool shirt. Save me! Keep me away from that cat. I'll fulfil your dream." 3. Patrick couldn’t believe his luck! This solved his issues. He answered, “Only if you do all my homework until the end of the semester; that’s 35 days. If you perform well, I could earn A's.” 4. The small man's face wrinkled like a dishcloth in the hamper. He stomped his knees and doubled his fists, scowling and pursing his lips. “Oh, am I cursed! I’ll do it.” 5. The elf did Patrick's homework as promised. One issue. Elf needs aid. Help me! Help me! Patrick must assist. “I don’t know this word,” the elf gasped when reading Patrick’s assignment. Dictionary, please. Better still, look up the term and hear it out letter by letter. 6. Patrick failed mathematics. “What are times tables?” the elf shouted. “Elves never need that. Division, fractions, addition, and subtraction? Sit by me—you must lead me.” Human history is unknown to elves. The small elf shouted even more. I need books. More novels. You can also help me read.” 7. That tiny elf nags every day! Patrick worked harder, and it was a drag! He went to school with puffy eyes from staying up overnight. 8. The elf left school on the final day. He discreetly left the back door since there was no homework. 9. Patrick's professors and classmates were impressed with his A's. His parents? What happened to Patrick? He became the ideal child. He was happy, completed his duties, and cleaned his room. 10. Patrick still felt he made the small guy complete all his schoolwork. However, I'll confide in you. Patrick did it—not the elf!

Ans: Patrick didn’t tick the boxes of an ideal and obedient student. He never obeyed neither his parents nor his teachers. He always got up late, followed by never finishing his homework or studying. He spent his time lying around or playing hockey, baseball and video games. He was also very selfish and only offered his help to the elf if he in turn would help him finish his homework. A change took over him when his semesters were over. He changed himself completely and became obedient, hard working and caring.

Ans: The Elf in the story “Who did Patrick’s Homework” is a tiny man, who wears hats and britches and possesses magical powers. Patrick, who was a clever little boy, enjoyed playing basketball, hockey and Nintendo but never cared about his homework. His teachers warned him that if he continued ignoring his homework, he would learn nothing and fall back in his semester. Patrick himself felt out of place sometimes because he did not know about the things his friends in school did. He saw himself as a big ‘ignoramus’, but he was still not bothered enough to focus on any studies. Outdoor sports were fun and interesting for him but sitting at home and doing homework was something that he hated!

Who Did Patrick’s Homework? – Summary

Patrick had a cat who had a habit of playing with his toys. One day, he found the cat playing with a little doll. Before the cat could chew and damage it, Patrick snatched the doll away from the cat. Then he realized that the cat was not playing with a doll. Actually, it was a tiny person who was trying to get away from the cat. The tiny man seemed afraid of the cat and pleaded to Patrick to keep the cat away. Patrick noticed what the little man was wearing, and he became curious. He wore a little wool shirt with old-fashioned britches and a tall high hat that looked like a witch’s top hat. The tiny man shouted out to Patrick for help – ‘Save me! Don’t give me back to that cat’. In return for this favor, the little man claimed to be an elf made Patrick a promise. The elf promised that he would fulfill one wish for Patrick to save him from the cat.

Patrick saw this incident as a golden opportunity to avoid doing homework for the rest of the semester. His semester was to end in the next thirty-five days, and he asked the elf to do his homework for him till then. If the elf really tried, he could earn some good grades like an A for his homework. This was the one condition set for Patrick’s help that the elf had to agree with. He wrinkled his nose in displeasure at the thought of doing homework but decided to do it. So, for the remaining thirty-five days of the semester, Patrick thought that he wouldn’t have to do any homework, and he was pleased with his good fortune.

The elf kept his promise and started going through Patrick’s schoolbooks to do his homework. However, there was still one problem that needed to be solved. The elf could not understand what was written in the books as he did not belong to the world of humans. He did not know history or maths, and he seemed confused about these subjects. At such times, he would call out to Patrick for help and poor Patrick, who thought he was free to play as much as he wanted, had to help the elf complete the given homework instead. When the elf needed to know the meanings of some words, he would ask Patrick to get the dictionary for him.

Once the little boy got the dictionary for the elf, he would make a new request – ‘look up the word and sound it out by each letter. The elf was relentless; he never allowed Patrick to catch a break. When it came to Maths, the elf was completely surprised! He kept asking what are times tables, fractions, multiplication, and division? All these concepts were unfamiliar to him. The loud elf got even louder as the homework became more difficult. He ordered Patrick to get him more and more books from the school library and asked him to read them out. Since the elves never needed all this, he required constant help from Patrick to solve all the questions.

The elf kept the boy on his toes, and it was clear that Patrick was working harder than ever. Due to the nagging and screaming of the elf, Patrick would stay up nights to complete his homework. He soon became tired and weary, and his eyes were swollen from studying so much. He had to go to school with puffy eyes, and he felt too exhausted. At last, the final day of school arrived, and the elf realized he had fulfilled his promise to Patrick. There was no more homework to do, and the elf planned his escape. When no one was looking, the elf quietly and slyly moved out the back door towards his freedom.

Colleges and universities have been wrestling with concerns over plagiarism and other ethical questions surrounding the use of AI since the emergence of ChatGPT in late 2022.

But Sam Altman, whose company, OpenAI, launched the chatbot app, said during a campus visit Wednesday that AI is such a powerful tool that higher education would be doing its students a disservice by turning its back on it — if that were even possible now. And some of the old rules of ethics will need to be rethought.

“Cheating on homework is obviously bad,” said Altman. “But what we mean by cheating and what the expected rules are does change over time.”

Altman discussed AI in the academy, along with the subtleties of using ChatGPT and other generative AI tools, while at the University to receive the Experiment Cup from Xfund , an early stage venture capital firm. That event was sponsored by the John A. Paulson School for Engineering and Applied Science, Harvard Business School, and the Institute for Business in Global Society ( BiGS ). It featured a conversation between Altman and Xfund co-founder Patrick Chung ’96.

Speaking to the Gazette before the Cup presentation, Altman likened the initial uproar at schools over ChatGPT to the ones that arose after the arrival of calculators and, later, search engines like Google. “People said, ‘We’ve got to ban these because people will just cheat on their homework,’” he said.

Altman, who left Stanford at 19 to start Loopt, a location-sharing social media app, said the reaction to calculators, for instance, was overblown. “If people don’t need to calculate a sine function by hand again … then mathematical education is over,” he said, with a gentle half-smile on his face.

Altman helped launch OpenAI in 2015 and its wildly influential ChatGPT — which can write papers and generate computer programs, among other things — before being removed in 2023 and then reinstated four days later as the company’s CEO.

ChatGPT, he said, has the potential to exponentially increase productivity in the same way calculators freed users from performing calculations by hand, calling the app “a calculator for words.”

He warned, “Telling people not to use ChatGPT is not preparing people for the world of the future.”

Following a bit of back-and-forth about how the ethics of using ChatGPT and other generative AI may differ in various disciplines, Altman came down hard in favor of utility, praising AI’s massive potential in every field.

“Standards are just going to have to evolve,” he said. He dismissed the notion that ChatGPT could be used for writing in the sciences, where the emphasis is on the findings, but not in the humanities, where the expression of ideas is central.

“Writing a paper the old-fashioned way is not going to be the thing,” he said. “Using the tool to best discover and express, to communicate ideas, I think that’s where things are going to go in the future.”

Altman, who last month joined the Department of Homeland Security’s Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board , said ethics remains a concern, and one that has yet to be resolved.

“There will be a conversation about what are the absolute limits of the tool, how do we as a society … negotiate ‘Here is what AI systems can never do.’ Where do we set the defaults? How much does an individual user get to move things around within those boundaries? How do we think about different countries’ laws?”

However, that discussion should not slow the development of AI. Instead, Altman described parallel tracks.

“Generally speaking, I do think these are tools that should do what their users want,” he said, before adding an important, if less than specific, caveat: “But there are going to have to be real limits.”
