Welcome Speech in English: Best Samples, Examples & Tips

Why are welcome speeches necessary.

Most of the gatherings and ceremonies are held with a purpose. They are either planned events or spontaneous gatherings. In both cases, it is important to know how to organize such events. We must prepare ourselves to conduct the event properly.

Let us imagine that you are hosting a gathering. You have prepared everything, including food, drinks, decorations, etc., and even set up the stage. However, you forgot one thing – a welcome speech. What happens next? Do you start talking immediately without waiting for everyone to arrive? Of course not!

The same goes for a meeting. How many times did you attend meetings where people didn’t introduce themselves? Or worse, they talked about themselves too much during the meeting. In addition, some speakers talk directly to the audience without introducing themselves. This makes it difficult for the attendees to comprehend the event’s process and connect with its objectives.

So why is a welcome speech in English needed? To begin with, it is necessary to give a brief overview of the topic. Secondly, it helps to provide information about the organization and its history. Thirdly, it allows us to highlight our achievements. And finally, it creates a good impression on guests. Otherwise, they might ask questions like “Where is this event going?”.

Significance of welcome speech

The significance of the welcome speech won’t be apparent without understanding what makes up the history of an event. An event can be defined as a sequence of activities carried out over a period of time. These activities are usually organized into stages, each with a specific purpose. For example, an event may start with opening remarks, followed by a keynote address, and finally concluded with closing remarks. Each stage of an event has a different set of responsibilities.

In the case of a welcoming ceremony, the welcome speech is considered to be one of the most important parts of the whole gathering. In fact, it is the most crucial aspect of the entire event. This is because the welcome speech serves several purposes.

First, it introduces the guests to the host. Second, it provides information regarding the upcoming program. Third, it creates a positive impression among the attendees. Fourth, it helps in creating a sense of unity among the participants. Fifth, it helps in establishing good relations between the hosts and the guests. And finally, it ensures that the guest feels comfortable during the occasion.

Objectives of a Welcome Speech in English

The objective of a welcome speech in English is to introduce yourself and the rest of the attendees at the event. This is done through a short introduction about who you are, what you do, why you’re attending, etc. The following are the objectives of a welcome speech:

  • Introduce yourself
  • Provide Information regarding the event
  • Create a positive impression among attendees
  • Establish good relations between hosts and guests
  • Ensure guests feel comfortable during the event
  • Help build unity among participants
  • Explain the purpose of the meeting/event
  • Set up the agenda for the meeting/event
  • Make introductions
  • Give background info about the organization
  • Highlight achievements (if any)

Welcome Address in English For Students

It’s natural for attendees of any event to expect an introductory speech, which sets the tone for the occasion. A host can easily command attention with an effective welcome. Even the longest speeches have the capacity to hold an audience’s interest when delivered in a catchy and impressive manner.

A short opening speech for a commencement ceremony

To everyone present, good morning. A very warm welcome to our respected faculty, our remarkable parents, and our dear students. Special recognition is due for our Chief Guest (name of chief guest). It’s a true honor to have such a successful alumnus (or state the chief guest’s job title). We express our biggest gratitude for accepting our invitation to deliver today’s keynote speech.

I’m standing here as a lucky witness to our dear students’ academic journey. Our school is very proud of everything you have accomplished and your small but not minor contributions to society. You’ve brought prestige to our name and deserve the title of one of our school’s most successful and dedicated batch of students.

With your teachers’ guidance and parents’ support, you’ve reached remarkable heights. I’d like to take this time to extend my gratitude to our faculty and our parents, for understanding, encouraging, and nurturing our students.

Graduates, you are about to start another chapter in your life. An exciting yet scary period. From now on, you will face more challenges, but I am confident that you’re adequately equipped to face any tribulation that comes your way. Remember that with conviction and self-belief, no mountain is too high to climb. The laurels you’ve brought back to our school are only the beginning. I am genuinely excited to see the astonishing feats that your futures hold.

A long opening speech for a commencement ceremony

Good morning everyone! I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our esteemed faculty, astounding parents, and our dear students. I’m honored to open our commencement ceremony and stand here where many of our accomplished alumni who I look up to once stood.

I extend a particularly warm welcome to our Chief Guest (name of chief guest), who as one of our outstanding alumni, has really set the standard for exemplary accomplishments.

(enumerate key achievements of chief guest)

Her/his professional and philanthropic endeavors attest to their upbringing and the values she/he lives by. We want to thank you for responding positively to our invitation to be the keynote speaker on today’s auspicious occasion.

As another academic year reaches its end, I’m sure that our dear students are anxious and also filled with hope and excitement. This is their final school event in our renowned school/college/university (name of school). But hopefully, it won’t be their last awarding ceremony.

We are extremely fortunate to have such a talented and passionate group of graduates who have earned laurels in honor of our school, adding to its distinction and great reputation. The amazing encouragement and unconditional support of our parents throughout the school year have been extraordinary. They have stood by their children in every school event. Our teachers and staff are truly thankful for the trust you’ve given us. Your children’s journey wouldn’t have been a huge success without your guidance and nurture.

It’s been a remarkable experience to witness the passion and commitment our students have exhibited in all their undertakings. I am filled with certitude that you will achieve whatever goal you’ve set your mind on. Adulthood is going to be jammed with more trials you’ve never imagined before. I am kidding. Maybe. Joking aside, you will win as long as you work hard and believe in yourself.

Remember that you are valuable and take every challenge you face as an opportunity to prove your worth and get better. Also, surround yourselves with people who are good for your well-being and treat them the way you’d like to be treated.

Maintain your sense of humor because not much else will get you through when the going gets rough. Life can be very special and you can truly make a mark, which doesn’t always need to have global proportions. Be accountable for your mistakes and learn from them. Keep nurturing your passions and remain as driven, bright, and astonishing as you are today. You are all wonderful and I can’t wait to see your future accomplishments, because they will be great.

Thank you and do us proud!

Children’s innocence and love are incomparable and difficult to resist. Their smile is the closest thing to heaven that we can glimpse in the world.

School is your children’s second home, and we teachers are their second parents. We thank you for the opportunity to take care of and guide your little angels.

Join us to celebrate our students and make this day as eventful and fun as it can be!

Sample of Welcome Speech for a Goodbye Get-together

Good evening everyone!

Welcome to my farewell party. I know, I know. You all said you’re sorry to see me go, but that you all would need food and entertainment first to deal with your sadness. So here we are. I shall deliver.

As the Semisonic song goes “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” And so it is with great gratitude that the VP in Japan decided to retire early, so the end of his role can mark the beginning of mine. To Toni Takitani, thanks for deciding you’ve had enough!

Kidding aside, I’d like to thank my friends who made this very corporate event a huge success. Look at this, my goodness!

Most importantly, I want to impart my profound gratitude to my boss (name of the boss). Without you, this party won’t have a band. I couldn’t ask for a better mentor. Or I could, but none of them would have changed my life as positively as you have. It saddens me to leave you the most, but it comforts me that you were my biggest source of encouragement to go. Or it may have been your plan all along. Genius!

So to everyone who came, thank you. I’ll have time to thank you properly later, but for now, let’s eat!

Before anything else, I’d like to take this moment to thank Merville & Posque Inc., their CEO Mr. Hyori Asano and his team for putting this event together in record time. It won’t be possible without your tireless dedication and contributions. I also want to thank everyone who came, our remarkable associates from Osaka, Chiang Rai, and Quezon, our wonderful clients who have stuck with us through thick and thin, and our amazing consultants in various fields of energy conservation. Your interest and patronage are very much appreciated.

A great welcome to all our extraordinary employees and staff members, some of whom have worked and grown along our company’s 23-year history. A big welcome, too, to our interns who have recently joined and brightened our corporate offices.

Today marks the 15th annual MPBC and it’s an honor to be a host in this glorious congress. I myself will be staying for the conference’s entirety to learn what I can about sustainable energy systems and their various implications and impact on the future of our planet.

The activities today will include an overview of all the forums, seminars, and exhibits around the MPBC complex. Second, we will have the inauguration of the new bio-dome on the grounds where we will also honor this year’s retirees. The afternoon’s seminars will kick off after lunch, and I encourage you to attend the discussions and learn about our future plans and projects. Finally, I’d like to encourage everyone to help yourselves to the snack stations in the hallway. Refreshments and sandwiches are on us for the duration of the conference.

I won’t keep you long and let’s begin the day. I wish all of you a valuable and wonderful time! Thank you.

Huge family events often have speeches: weddings, birthdays, farewell parties, funerals, anniversaries, and so on. Some of these events normally have hosts and esteemed guests. Here are some tips and samples to inspire you.

If you’re searching for tips on how to make a welcome speech for guest, here are some things you can do:

  • When drafting your speech, do the research.
  • Highlight the key qualities that are worth mentioning in an opening welcome speech for event.
  • Take note of the welcome address speech sample in this article and create a framework from them.
  • Look up welcome speech quotes and choose the best one to use somewhere in your speech.
  • Greet the chief guest at the event personally and introduce yourself if you don’t know each other.
  • Extend your hard for a handshake and smile to express that they are honored and welcome to the event.
  • Smile and suggest they are being welcomed.
  • Address them formally with the usual Miss or Mr.
  • Escort the chief guest before you assume host duties.

Welcoming the Chief Guest with a Short Speech

It’s a great honor to welcome our Chief guest and tonight’s keynote speaker. I was worried at first about how to introduce (title and name of Chief guest) because any introduction would pale in comparison to the reality and immensity of her/his accomplishments.

(Enumerate the main accomplishments of the chief guest).

She/he is the ultimate inspiration for young professionals everywhere who want to succeed in the field of international trade. Here to inspire us with her career journey and all the experiences she accumulated along the day, join me in giving a round of applause to (title and name of chief guest).

Welcoming the Chief Guest (Longer Version of the Speech)

Introducing our next attendee is a great pleasure of mine. When she/he accepted our invitation to be tonight’s Chief guest and keynote speaker, I almost jumped for joy. Then I realized I would naturally receive the task of introducing her/him. At first, this gave me great anxiety. How would I be able to pull it off and deliver an introduction that would give her background justice? Then I thought, no introduction would ever compare, so it was foolish to aim for success when failure is guaranteed. So I decided to just do it. Our chief guest has accomplished the following, to name a few:

As I looked at her/his professional and personal successes, I realized here is a woman/man who was faced many times with the certainty of failure but had given her circumstances a grad twist by attaining success against all odds. Then I thought, perhaps I should aim for success in this speech, after all.

She/he is an inspiration to many, not only for all the fields of expertise she has earned and the extreme success that went with the process, but she/he has also set the benchmark for philanthropy and good deeds. She/he has done this quietly, too, and she/he might strangle me for revealing it to the public. I didn’t even know half of the wonderful things she/he has done for our community before my research.

Without further ado, and here to inspire us with her wisdom and grand skill, join me in welcoming our Chief guest (title and name of chief guest).

Welcome Speech for Parents

Hi everyone!

As host and brother of the groom, I’d like to take this time to introduce the parents of the bride. Without them, my brother wouldn’t be the lucky and happy man he is today. More than that, I have witnessed how they accepted my brother and treated him as a son long before the engagement. I often tag along on family trips and have spent hours of wonderful conversations with them. Apart from my own parents, they are two of the most affectionate and hospitable people I’ve ever met. If I could meet a woman whose parents are just like them, I’d consider myself half as lucky as my brother.

Let’s give a round of applause for (names of the bride’s parents). Thank you for embracing my brother into the fold.

Welcome Speech Samples for National Holidays

Below is a sample of a welcome speech typically delivered during Annual Day. Substitute the appropriate details to match your information and use the framework in other speeches reserved for national holidays.

Welcome Speech for Annual Day

I am overjoyed to have this chance to welcome all of you to our elite institution’s 25th Annual Day. Today’s children are the hope of the next generation. All these graduates we see today, receiving awards for their achievements will go on to lead successful lives. Let them live up to the expectations set before them.

I am very happy to be a member of such an elite school where we learned from such great professors who teach us beyond the boundaries of the ordinary classroom. They’re also the minds and hands behind such a big event every year. I’d like to use this chance to organize such a wonderful event this year. It’s also a great pleasure of mine to introduce our Chief Guest.

Welcome speeches are necessary at events. They usually set the tone or expectations of the people who attended or participated in the occasion. There are many ways in going about delivering a welcome address speech. Review the samples in this article and do your due diligence to craft an outline, framework, or skeleton from the contents that you can use in welcome speeches of your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

A good welcome speech has the following qualities: * It is sincere. * It can hold the attention of the audience. * The ideas don’t ramble. * Welcome address quotes are used. One for a short welcome speech, and 2 for a longer one. Never 3, unless the speaker is trying to be funny. * The contents are relevant to the event. * It has an impressive anecdote. * The length doesn’t exceed 5 minutes.

The last segment of this article contains tips on welcoming chief guests, esteemed guests, or guests of honor. The tips contained here can be divided into things to consider while drafting the welcome speech, and things to do at the event itself when meeting the chief guest.

A simple thank you would suffice. Make sure you reiterate your gratitude. Some welcome speeches can end with a line that welcomes the guest of honor.

Depending on the context, a welcome speech doesn’t always need to be impressive. In some situations, a straightforward introduction is all you need. However, in some circumstances like commencement ceremonies, farewell parties, dinners, and some others, the audience is prepared to listen to long speeches. In this case, the speech needs to catch the attention of the attendees and maintain their interest. An impressive welcome speech often has an emotional element. Not just parroting big words to describe a person’s achievements or flatter them. Try to use humor if you’re funny by nature or if you can deliver the punchline well. Use popular quotes in your speech. Tell anecdotes relevant to the attendees. Or reveal an epiphany. These are how you should draft a welcome speech set to impress.

Make sure that it is relevant to the content of your welcome speech or the point you’re making. You can use phrases such as the following: * According to… * As the old saying goes… * There’s a quote that has always stuck with me… * Events like this always remind me of one of my favorite quotes… Try to find quotes that are unique and not cliche. You can find some in the lyrics of contemporary music, or lines and dialogues from books and movies, and so on.

Welcome Speech on Annual Day Function in College and School for Guests

We warmly welcome everyone – outstanding guests, correspondents, teachers, and dear friends and parents of such great and talented children. Finally, the auspicious day has come; put an end to our inpatient anticipation and tireless preparations for this event.

I am a little surprised how a person like me, who loved every aspect of this stage, but so hesitant to come here and talk, now has the courage. With great pleasure and satisfaction, I stand here to give a welcome speech on our most expected annual day.

Indeed! The annual school day is the culmination of the school’s academic year. It is a time for celebration and recognition of the students as well as the school’s achievements.

It is also a time for teamwork and being proud that the school stands for and believes and values. Encourage the children to participate in the various events and see their blossom into an individual with several talents.

It is a pleasant evening, steeping in a solemn mood, atmosphere, and singing of my friends. Thank you all for your enthusiasm and “community spirit.”. I express a deep sense of gratitude to our correspondent Lady for giving her a helping hand on every right path we have chosen.

It is a day of joy because together, we will remember many of the moving stories we have experienced in the past years. It is also a day on which our old students, parents, and friends will learn more about the past and future development of the study and school. Our students have always been known as students with diverse capabilities, and I am sure that you will agree today.

We are at a stage where the chapter closes, and a new one begins. It is overwhelming that we are now counting the years since the school was founded. What a journey it was – every year it has its triumphs and struggles. It was an adventurous journey.

The year 2018 – 19 was celebrated in many ways. The Cricket team won, and our school got it with the association of 10 or 11. The similarity between them is that both could not be possible without the team’s effort. It is the most valuable efforts of students who have always cooperate to solve problems and enjoy happiness in the team.

The year was exciting, full of challenges and revival like everyone else. Some days were an endless stream of emergencies that came unannounced. Everyone allows learning, ask questions, reflect, and introspect. As we prepare for the year, we welcome new tryst, new questions, and new problems: new solutions and new heights.

Moreover, when we do, it, we remember that … “On each blade of grass sits an angel who still says: Grows! It grows! – More about school development and a few other points.

Finally, we know that: we have become stronger and intelligent. The happiness and satisfaction of teachers and students show that “everything is good” or “almost everything is good.” Thanks a lot for always trust and support.

We set our standards, strive to achieve them, and rise to higher levels. Science, evolution, and effort will never cease.

Once again, welcome to all these memorable festivities throughout the year. Everyone will be surprised by watching what will be on the stage. I want to thank everyone for giving me this opportunity.

The meetings were organized to discuss the issues that might occur in the development and promotion of our brand. Renowned experts, researchers, and managers from industry and society were invited to present their views and discuss the opportunities, threats, strengths, and weaknesses of the subject.

Thank a lot to all who participated and contributed to the success of the event — furthermore, off-stage events such as gathering, meetings, and dinner.

I want to thank the volunteers who ran and did many things. Thank you very much, great students, who have appeared in such a large number, not only from our faculty but also from other College faculties as well.

This event would not have been successful without volunteers and students on the organizing committee. Thank you so much for your efforts. The whole audience- Thank you very much for devoting valuable attention and suggesting the opinions.

Did you enjoy the fantastic breakfast and lunch today? Thanks to ABC catering service for such delicious food. It was a great day! Thank you all for completing this event and for your input. Thank you for blessing with your presence. I will now officially end this meeting with Vande Mataram.

Are you on welcome speech duty for an upcoming program or event? You’ve got nothing to worry about—with the right format and tone, it’s super easy to write and present a welcome speech for just about any occasion. We’ve outlined everything you need to know, from your opening greetings and acknowledgments, to establishing the right tone and nailing your closing remarks. You’ve got this in the bag!

Greeting the Audience

Step 1 Welcome the audience using serious language for a formal occasion.

  • Keep the tone more serious if it's an important occasion. Use more formal language and don't crack any inappropriate jokes. For example, at a wake, you might say, "We're so glad to have you all here tonight. We appreciate your presence at this difficult time."

Step 2 Greet guests informally by using light-hearted language.

  • For an event with close friends and family, more informal language might be appropriate. Include a few jokes and keep your speech more lighthearted.

Grab your audience's attention with a strong opening. Start with a loud voice and a strong presence that welcomes everyone and gets them involved. Ask a question they can respond to or tell a joke — anything to connect with the audience. Do something that grabs their attention and excites them and makes them thrilled about the event.

Step 3 Add individual greetings for any special guests.

  • Special guests include any people of honor, those that may play a particularly important part in the event, or those who have traveled a long way to be there.
  • Make sure that you practice all of names, titles, and pronunciations of the special guests before your speech.
  • For example you could say, "We'd like to extend a special welcome to our guest of honor, Judge McHenry, who will be speaking later tonight."
  • Alternatively to welcome a group of people you might say, "While we're excited to have you all here tonight, we'd especially like to say welcome to the students from Johnson Middle School."

Step 4 Introduce the event itself.

  • For an informal event such as a birthday party, you could say, "We're so happy to have you here tonight to eat, drink, and celebrate another year of Jessica's life. Now, let's get to it."
  • For a more formal event such as one run by an organisation, you could say, “We are so excited to have you all here to participate in our 10th annual pet’s day, organised by the Animal Rescue Group.”

Forming the Body of the Speech

Step 1 Acknowledge those who have played an important part in the event.

  • An example of acknowledging individual people is saying, “We couldn’t have pulled off this fundraiser without the hard work and dedication of Grace and Sally, who worked tirelessly from day 1 to make today a reality.”
  • Avoid reading off a long list of people or sponsors, as your audience will begin to get bored. Stick to just a handful of highlights.

Step 2 Mention any parts of the event that are of special importance.

  • For instance, at a conference, you might point out when the dinner will be held, or where particular sessions will take place.
  • At a wedding reception, you might note when dancing will start or when the cake will be served.

Step 3 Reiterate your welcoming line.

  • Alternatively, you could end the body of your speech during an informal gathering by saying, “I can't wait to see you all out on the dancefloor!”

Ending the Speech

Step 1 Say that you hope the audience enjoys the event, if applicable.

  • You could also say that you hope that the audience takes something away from the event. For example, “I hope that today inspires ideas and discussions around the ways that we can make our city a better place!”

Step 2 Introduce the next speaker if necessary.

  • At a formal event, you might say, "Now, for our speaker. Rebecca Roberts comes here from Montreal, Canada, and she is a leading expert in the study of the human brain. She'll be speaking tonight on what drives humans to make decisions. Let's welcome her."
  • For a more informal event such as a party, you could say, “Next up is Sam, who has been Kyle’s best friend for 10 years strong. He has a decade of embarrassing stories about Kyle to share with us tonight!"

Step 3 Thank the audience for attending.

  • Alternatively you might say, “Thank you again to everyone for being here tonight to celebrate Joe and Kathleen’s 50th wedding anniversary! Let the celebrations begin!”

Step 4 Keep your speech within a suitable time limit.

  • If you are unsure, ask the organiser or host what an appropriate length of time for your speech will be.

About This Article

Patrick Muñoz

To write a welcome speech, start with a greeting to your audience that’s appropriate to the situation. For example, you could try “Good evening ladies and gentlemen” if you’re introducing a formal event, or “Thank you everyone for coming on this sunny day” for a more relaxed occasion. After you’ve finished the greeting, introduce the event by talking about who organized it and what its purpose is. In the main body of your speech, acknowledge 2 or 3 people who played important parts in organizing the event. You should also emphasize special parts of the event that people should pay attention to, such as where dinner will be or where a conference session will take place. When you’re ready to conclude your speech, tell the audience to enjoy the event by saying something like “I hope you all enjoy the exciting speakers to come.” Finish your speech by thanking the audience for attending. 50+ different ways to say welcome to your guests

By:  Susan Dugdale

The challenge of a welcome speech is to find alternate ways to express yourself sincerely without resorting to a string of undifferentiated "same-old, same-old" words and phrases that have become meaningless through overuse to greet your guests with.

And there's an additional question to answer. Is the event formal or informal? Your response will guide the language choices you make.

What's on this page?

  • help to decide whether you need formal or informal language
  • examples of informal and formal welcome speech openings
  • 50+ different ways to say welcome
  • 28 example sentences

Do you need to use formal or informal language?

Is the welcome speech you're preparing formal or informal?

There are major differences. The words you use in an informal speech will be entirely out of place in a formal one. You need to know what is right for the occasion if you want your speech to be a success.

The video below explains the difference and provides six example speech openings to illustrate: three formal and three informal.

How to avoid repetition making your speech boring!

Repetition of a familiar word is easy to do and totally understandable.

Sometimes we can't find the words we want, and we get stuck in a vocabulary rut, using the same phrase or word over and over, and over again, trying to make it cover multiple and/or different situations.

Image: retro woman giving a welcome speech, and repeating the word "welcome" a lot. Text: Repetition can be very boring! Text in s

And yet we know, words are just like clothes. One size does does not fit all.

What's the solution?

Here's three suggestions to individualize or tailor your words to fit your event a little better. And they'll be more interesting for the audience to listen to!

With care you'll find most will adapt either formal or informal use.

1. Add an adjective to the word welcome

Try working in an adjective to describe the quality of your welcome more fully.

I've provided an example sentence or two alongside each adjective to show how it could be used in context.

I know some examples are much more successful, (smooth to say and read), than others.

Some, quite frankly, clunk a little. (I say this with a wry smile ☺!)

If you decide to use the feature word in those that do, perhaps you'll find a way to use it more eloquently!

What sort of welcome are you offering?

It could be a(n):

  • warm  welcome " Luckily the weather is on our side today! The sun and I are pleased to offer you a warm welcome."
  • hearty  welcome  "Here's a hearty welcome, big and warm enough to encompass you all! To say we are thrilled to see you is an understatement."
  • cheerful  welcome "It's my pleasure to extend a cheerful welcome to you all! Your presence makes us very happy."
  • cordial  welcome "Fellow members, please join me in giving our guests the most cordial of welcomes."
  • sociable  welcome "Let's hear it for a sociable welcome! On the count of three, turn to your neighbor and say 'hello'. There are no strangers here, only  friends we are yet to meet."
  • genial  welcome "It's my pleasant duty to bid you all a genial welcome."
  • convivial  welcome "On behalf of my colleagues, I wish you all a convivial welcome. We are going to have a merry and enjoyable time together."
  • agreeable  welcome "The flags are flying. The balloons are ready for release. It's a great day, one we've been planning and waiting for. I'm sure you'll concur, this is an agreeable welcome."
  • pleasing  welcome "It's gratifying to look around and see so many familiar faces. That's a pleasing welcome to what I know is a going to be a great  conference ... "

Or maybe it's a(n):

  • glad  welcome "It's a glad welcome we bring to you this morning, filled with the desires, hopes and dreams we all share."
  • hospitable  welcome "We're delighted to offer the most hospitable welcome we can."
  • amiable  welcome "Dear guests, look around you! An amiable welcome full of friendship is yours."
  • gracious  welcome "Our desire is to extend a gracious and inclusive welcome to all of you. For now let's put aside our differences and instead celebrate what brings us together!"

What about a(n):

Image -young retro salesman. Text: What sort of welcome words do you want? We've got cheerful, hearty, warm (the classic) and delighted.

Then there's a:

  • pleasant  welcome "You know what's great about these events? You are always assured of a pleasant welcome. This is feel-good central and we aim ..."
  • companionable  welcome "Looking around I can see many familiar faces - peers, past and present colleagues. What a companionable welcome! It's great to see you all here ..."
  • grateful  welcome "Many of you have made a huge effort to join us today. On behalf of us all, we are deeply appreciative and offer you our most grateful welcome."
  • friendly  welcome "Today is the day we begin to learn to look through the eyes of others; to find out and experience what the world is like for them. It is also the day we grow bigger than our differences and offer to everyone regardless of historical rights and wrongs, a friendly welcome, an outstretched hand."

Perhaps a(n):

  • appreciative  welcome "Wow, what a gathering we have here tonight. We've got dignitaries, celebrities, fans, and organizational members all brought together for one cause. Ours. Here's an appreciative welcome to you all."
  • superb  welcome "Ladies and gentlemen, the room is ready. The tables are set. The band is playing our theme song. And the waiting staff are preparing to take your orders. This is a superb welcome, fit for royalty, and that's what you are to us."
  • delighted  welcome "To our special guests; look around. See the smiles of everyone's faces? We are truly delighted to welcome you here today."
  • favored  welcome "Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we have stars in the sky, and on stage. We are favored to welcome some the brightest the world has seen."
  • honored  welcome "I look around the stage and am in awe with the collected expertise gathered here. We are deeply honored to welcome you."
  • big  welcome "Here's to a big welcome for our guests; Lady Amelia Thistledown and Sir Roger Godfrey!"
  • huge  welcome "Ladies and gentlemen, please give a huge welcome to ..."
  • rapturous  welcome "Do you hear the applause? The audience joins me in a rapturous welcome! We are thrilled to have you with us today."

2. What about the guests you want to welcome?

Think about the guests you want to welcome as part of your speech. What sort of guests are they?  Is there a word, or two, you could use to describe them more fully?

Accurate descriptions of the people coming to the event, either as especially invited guests, or as members of the audience, helps build credibility and trust.

The care you take to find the right words is an excellent investment for everybody involved.

Image: hand drawn crowd figures. Text: Honor your guests by using words to help them stand out from the crowd.

Could your guests be better described as:

  • esteemed  guests?
  • brilliant  guests?
  • celebrated  guests?
  • dear  guests?
  • admired  guests?
  • acclaimed  guests?
  • cherished  guests?
  • respected  guests?
  • revered  guests?
  • wonderful  guests?
  • popular  guests?
  • much-loved  guests?
  • famous  guests?
  • expert  guests?
  • distinguished  guests?
  • honored  guests?
  • valued  guests?
  • appreciated  guests?
  • remarkable  guests?
  • renowned  guests?
  • knowledgeable  guests?
  • treasured  guests?

3. What about the word "guests"?

Image: cross section of an audience. Text: Who, exactly, is your audience? Are these people your peers, colleagues, customers, work mates ...

Who are you talking to? Yes, everybody in the audience is a guest to your event but what could they be more accurately called?

Are these people your:

  • colleagues?
  • associates?
  • classmates?
  • co-collaborators?
  • fellow-travelers, nurses, teachers ... ? (insert the appropriate descriptor)
  • affiliates?
  • conspirators?
  • companions?

And lastly, have fun experimenting!

Do try mixing and matching your words and phrases to fit the occasion. After all there are more flavors to "welcome" than vanilla!

Welcome Speech for Boss Speech 1

Good Afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen,

It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you all to the 5 th Annual General Meeting of ABC Travel Agency. Like every year, we will share our achievements and failures of the last year along with sharing the business plans for the next year and the growth opportunities for our company as well as for our employees in near future.

Well, I would also like to share one of the most awaited news since past 4 months. As you all know that the CEO of our company Mr. XYZ had resigned 4 months ago from his position due to sudden health emergency he faced. Since then, the position was vacant as the Board of Directors was looking for an equally capable persona to occupy the position of CEO in our company. The good news is that the company has finally found its Boss. Amidst your claps and applauds, I would like to welcome Mr. D, the new boss of ABC Ltd. Mr. D is one of the Board of Directors and 50% shareholder in this organization. He is also one of the founders of ABC Ltd. and thus he knows in and out about the company.

On qualification front, Mr. D is a pass out from IIM, Ahmadabad and an IIT Engineer from Roorkie, UP. He has been a brilliant student on academic front. Post completion of his studies, he joined LMN Tours & Travels, as a Senior Manager, Operations. In his 10 years of career at LMN, Mr. D went across several promotions and career development opportunities. He resigned from the company as a Director in search of better growth opportunity and thus joined hands with us.

On personal front, Mr. D is an avid traveler and a reader. He has travelled across India and most of the parts of Asia, USA, UK and Australia. He once shared with me that he finds tranquility in travelling; but I would say, he also found business opportunity while travelling and his deep understanding about customer’s requirement and knowledge about places are the reasons he designs the travel packages, the way they should be to cater to modern travelers.

ABC is sincerely thankful to Mr. D for accepting the position of the CEO and the employees are all the more grateful for giving us opportunity to work under his leadership. I am the happiest because I have to directly report to Mr. D; in other words, he is my new Boss.

Sir, I have heard a lot about your dynamic personality and your democratic leadership approach. I can’t wait enough to work under you and gain experience and learning from you.

I would now like to invite the Chief Financial Officer of our company to share the financial report for the year 2018-2019.

Thank you friends and see you on the dance floor!

Good Afternoon Friends!

First of all, thank you for assembling here on a short notice and special thanks to the organizers who have organized this meeting, like instantly!

This meeting has been called upon to inform you about some managerial changes that have occurred in the last few days in our company PML Pvt. Ltd. I understand, most of you have been speculating the transfer of Mr. Verma, the Operations Head to our new branch opened in Karnataka. Well, that has taken place now already; since Mr. Verma’s native place is Karnataka, he had applied for a transfer.

The company had though accepted and approved his transfer request; was awaiting the position of Operations Head to be filled by equally adroit, talented, qualified and experienced individual. Since our firm is an HR Consultancy office, we needed talented person who would not only attract and convince new clients but would also retain the existing ones.

With immense pleasure, I would like to inform and welcome Mr. A Singh to fill the position of the Operations Head of PML Pvt. Ltd. Mr. Singh possesses a vast working experience of 20 years with many renowned companies; XY Consultancy; AB HR, DL Firms, to name few of those. In his 20 years of career, he has helped several companies reach the heights of success and we are very sure that his extensive experience and managerial skills would help our company as well.

His ability, knowledge and customer dealing skills are beyond excellence and I know these talents of Mr. Singh and the brand image of our company together would achieve new milestones of success. Personally, Mr. Singh is a pleasing personality and he loves to meet new people, talk to them.

He has achieved Masters Degree in Psychology, which has been helping him analyze new clients, gauge and understand their needs and offer them tailor-made services. This is the secret of his success. He has been highly successful as participative leader; he engages his subordinates in every prospective deal; obtain ideas from them and implement many of those. He has been loved by his people and the management wherever he has worked.

Many of you probably do not know that Mr. Singh is a fervent writer. I am sure you have heard about the book ‘People and I’; this has been written by none other but Mr. Singh. The book was one of the bestsellers in 2016 and those who have read the book would understand Mr. Singh’s keen interest in exploring people.

Friends, I would like to request you to join hands together for welcoming Mr. Singh to PML Pvt. Ltd. I would also like to say that our new Operations Head would have his own style of working. He may implement new work rules and code of ethics. Mr. Singh has great respect for people of our organization; as told by him while joining us. So, let’s maintain the good image and give him a very warm welcome.

I hope PML further flourishes along with Mr. Singh and all other Mangers, Employees and each staff!

While I understand, you might have already done so; I request each one of you to organize your respective work systems; arrange the files; update all outdated works, manuals, files and records, if not done already. Though, he will join the office from 1 st Jun onwards, he is operational and approachable over E-mails till then.

Salutatorian Speech Examples To Make Guests Feel Welcome

Salutatorian speech examples welcome, thank, reminesce, and inspire

Salutatorian speeches are considered the opening act to other speeches by the valedictorian and guest speakers. They can be general, serious, funny, inspirational, long, or short, but they should always be heartfelt. These salutatorian speech examples show how to welcome guests and gets the ceremony going.

At college or high school graduations, the salutatorian, the person with the second highest grade points average in a graduating class, typically speaks first. Following the salutatorian speech, the valedictorian gives the main student speech of the ceremony.

Here are some salutatorian speech examples to guide your writing.

Table of Contents

What Is The Purpose of A Salutatorian Speech?

The salutatorian speech often serves as a welcome speech to greet those at the commencement ceremony. Whether you are at a college or high school graduation, the salutatorian speeches are similar. While the valedictoria n typically speaks to their fellow graduates, the salutatorian speaks on behalf of the class in their graduation speech.

Salutatorian speech examples on behalf of the class

When Is It Usually Given During Graduation?

The salutatorian speech, or salutation, is often the first speech in the graduation ceremony. A high school salutatorian speech might welcome everyone for coming, thank faculty, staff, and loved ones for their hard work and support of the graduates, and serve as an introduction for the festivities to follow.

What Is The Usual Content Of The Speech?

  • Introduction:  Be certain to introduce yourself in the opening portions of the speech. Include a greeting such as “good morning” or “good evening” before explaining who you are and why you are honored to represent this college or high school class.
  • Thanks : It is common for the salutatorian to thank those assembled to celebrate the special day. Acknowledging staff members at this time is also appropriate.
  •   Welcoming:  Someone needs to welcome everyone to the commencement ceremony, and as the first speaker, that task often falls to the salutatorian.
  •   Inspiring:  A salutatorian speech can serve as a tool to give pieces of advice or wisdom to the graduates. This can be done through stories, quotes, or both.
  •   Reminiscing:  Recapping and reminiscing about the years the class has spent together is often the most meaningful part of the speech.

Should The Speech Be Coordinated With That Of The Valedictorian?

Before finalizing ideas for the salutatorian speech, the salutatorian should compare notes with the valedictorian before they are solidified. Each speech should have a distinct and exciting focus that will not render the other redundant. Coordinating your approaches is an excellent way to ensure attendees enjoy both of your speeches.

How Do You Write The Speech?

  • Ask a teacher, administrator, or faculty advisor  to determine  your speech length . If they say 3-5 minutes, you should stick within that time frame. These speeches are usually at most 10 minutes.
  •   Talk to classmates   to gather material.  Are there stories you want to share about your graduating class? Be sure you are not focusing on a small group of people, as it is graduation day for an entire class, not just a few.
  •  Choose a  few main points  to make. Don’t try to cram too many speech topics into the 5 or so minutes you have to talk.
  •  Make an  outline.  How will you bring your thoughts together into a cohesive speech? Remember that bringing it all together is a big part of powerful public speaking. If you want to write an inspirational speech, use a quote to either kick off or conclude your speech.
  •  Start  writing . Once you have a rough draft,  read it out loud  and time yourself. Make sure you have avoided clichés. Verify that it fits the time constraints you have been given. The rule of thumb is that one double-spaced typed page is about  two minutes worth of speaking .
  •  Don’t forget to  revise.  Even accomplished authors take the time to take suggestions and revise their work.
  •   Practice, practice, practice.  Work on fine-tuning items like making eye contact and not talking too fast.

What Is An AI-Produced Example Of A Salutatorian Speech Sound Like?

A generic salutatorian speech primarily produced by Google Bard shows how the parts of the speech come together to welcome, thank, reflect, and inspire.

Good morning, faculty, staff, parents, and fellow graduates. It is an honor to stand before you today as the salutatorian of our graduating class.

I would like to start by thanking my parents, teachers, and friends for their support over the past four years. I would not be standing here today without their help.

I would also like to thank the faculty and staff of our school for their dedication and hard work. They have helped us to learn and grow in so many ways.

AI-generated salutatarian speech example

I would like to take a moment to reflect on our past experiences. Four years ago, we came into these hallways as timid freshmen, unsure of what the next four years would bring. We stumbled through our first day of school, struggling to find the paths to our classes. Since Covid was in full swing, our way to class was often online, and masks were our top fashion accessory.

But as the years went by, we grew and learned together. We experienced moments of triumph and moments of defeat. But through it all, we supported each other and made lasting memories.

I remember the first time we went to the homecoming football game. We were all so excited to be there, and we cheered our team on to victory. I also remember the time we went on the senior trip to Europe. We had so much fun exploring new cities and cultures. And, of course, I will never forget the prom. It was a magical night that we will all cherish forever.

These are just a few of the many memories we shared. We have laughed together, cried together, and supported each other through thick and thin. We have grown up together, and we have become the people we are today because of each other.

Conclusion:

As we look to the future, I know that we are all excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. We are ready to take on new challenges and make a difference in the world.

I am confident that we will all achieve great things. We have the talent, the drive, and the support of our loved ones. I know that we will make our school proud.

Thank you again for this opportunity. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Congratulations, class of 2023! I wish you all the best in your future.

What Are Some Real-life Salutatorian Speech Examples?

While looking for great graduation speech examples, we stumbled upon this one by  Cassidy Bell , Guilford Schools Class of 2016 salutatorian. Notice how she thanks those in attendance, tells stories that relate to the entire graduating class, gives some focus on the school principal, and pulls it all together.

Mariel Camargo  is the Waxahachie High School salutatorian, and she gives another great speech. Mariel thanks those dearest to her and explains why their love and support means so much to her. But she does not dwell on her personal story. Rather, she pulls in the entire class repeatedly.

A speech for a parochial school might have some different content and slant to it, as illustrated in this speech by  Caroline Kniskern  of Gilbert Christian Schools.

Whatever approach you decide to take after looking at salutatorian speech templates, do your best to give it a personal slant that is most appropriate for you, your school, the graduating class you represent, and the community you grew up in.

Speech on Inauguration Ceremony

Inauguration ceremonies are special events that mark the start of something new. They hold great significance, celebrating milestones and progress.

You might have seen these ceremonies for new buildings, offices, or even when a president takes office. It’s like a grand welcome party for new beginnings.

1-minute Speech on Inauguration Ceremony

Ladies and gentlemen, today is a special day. It is a day that marks the start of something new, a day filled with hope and promise. This is our inauguration ceremony day, an event that signals the start of a fresh chapter.

Inauguration means to begin or introduce. It is like the first step in a long journey. This ceremony today is our first step. It is a step towards new goals, new dreams, and new triumphs. From this day forward, we are on a mission to achieve great things.

The best part about an inauguration ceremony is that it brings us all together. Whether you’re a teacher, a friend, or a family member, today, we stand as one. We stand united, ready to step into this new beginning with positivity and enthusiasm.

We are also here to celebrate. It’s a day of joy, a day to be proud of what we’ve accomplished so far, and a day to anticipate what the future holds. It’s like a birthday party, where we celebrate another year of growth and promise, but today, we’re celebrating a new start.

As we stand here at this inauguration ceremony, let’s remember that this is just the beginning. We have a long road ahead filled with challenges and triumphs. But for now, let us embrace this moment, this first step, and embark on this journey together.

So let’s get started, let’s open the doors to our dreams, let’s make this new beginning a memorable one. Here’s to our inauguration day, a day filled with promise and hope. Thank you.

2-minute Speech on Inauguration Ceremony

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Let’s begin by celebrating this special day. Today, we gather here to mark the start of something new, something exciting, and something promising. It’s the inauguration ceremony, a powerful event that holds the promise of a fresh beginning.

Inauguration is like planting a seed. As we plant the seed, we dream of a tall, strong tree that will one day bear fruits. Today, we plant such a seed, hoping that it will grow into something splendid and fruitful. A new chapter is opening up, and we are the lucky ones who get to write the first few lines.

Now, let’s talk about the significance of this ceremony. An inauguration is not just about cutting a ribbon or unveiling a plaque. It’s about hopes and dreams. It’s about the hard work of many people, and the trust and faith that everyone has put into this project. It’s a symbol of the collective effort and dedication that has brought us to this point.

Inauguration also marks a journey. Every journey begins with a single step. Today, we take that first step. As we start this journey, we carry with us the hopes and dreams of everyone involved. But remember, this is only the first step. Like any journey, there will be challenges along the way. There might be times when we stumble, but we will always get back up and continue moving forward.

Finally, let’s not forget about the role we all play in this inaugural journey. We are not just spectators, but active participants. Every one of us has a part to play in making this journey a success. We are the builders, the creators, and the dreamers. Our collective effort, dedication, and perseverance will determine the success of this journey.

In conclusion, this inauguration ceremony is not just a formal event. It’s the beginning of a journey, a journey filled with hope, dreams, and challenges. As we take this first step, let’s remember the hard work, the trust, and the faith that has brought us here. Let’s remember that we are not just spectators, but active participants in this journey. And most importantly, let’s remember that this is just the beginning.

Gwinnett County's first Black-owned pilot school to open soon

welcome speech for manager of school

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - Gwinnett County Airport's Briscoe Field is set to welcome a groundbreaking addition: Lookup Flight Academy, LLC , the first Black-owned pilot school in the area. Approved by the Board of Commissioners last week, the school secured a 25-year lease for a 2.3-acre site, complete with a hangar building and ramp.

The decision marks a significant milestone in addressing the underrepresentation of minority pilots in aviation. Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson expressed her excitement, highlighting the school's potential to pave the way for future leaders in the industry.

Founded by aviator and entrepreneur Michael Ojo, Lookup Flight Academy aims to provide comprehensive pilot training while fostering diversity and inclusion. With a focus on mentorship and hands-on learning, the academy seeks to empower aspiring aviators from underrepresented communities.

"Pilotage demands doing the hard thing, regardless of gender or wealth," said Ojo. "It requires equal attention from all, as your life and future hinge on it. Embrace the challenge!"

Lookup Flight Academy, LLC, plans to renovate its hangar facility to create an optimal learning environment. The school anticipates being fully operational and ready to welcome aspiring aviators by the summer.

What Just Happened at Columbia University

Inside the student protests that led to more than 100 arrests..

In a matter of days, Columbia University’s campus has become a flashpoint for the country’s political unrest—the site of impassioned youth protests over Israel’s war in Gaza and U.S. support for it, which has in turn fueled vociferous backlash, a flurry of national media attention, and more than 100 arrests. And since it all began, with a handful of student protesters pitching tents on the lawn at 4 a.m. Wednesday, university radio station WKCR has kept its coverage of the situation going all day and night.

“We’ve been covering in shifts,” Ted Schmiedeler, an undergraduate member of the station’s executive board, told me Saturday morning as we toured the small studio at Broadway and West 114 th Street. It was a rare quiet moment during a week of nonstop action; out front, a dozen NYPD officers were setting up new metal barricades in anticipation of a surge of demonstrators.

In the studio, one student journalist was playing a field recording from that morning. Two others monitored the broadcast. Nearby, a folding table was strewn with snacks, and a futon and couch were piled high with pillows and blankets. “I just got done with a 3 a.m.–10 a.m. shift reporting from the lawn,” said Georgia Dillane, another undergraduate member of the station’s executive board. She pointed toward the couch. “And that was where I napped.”

Normally, WKCR is a pretty heavy on music programming—jazz is one of the station’s calling cards—but since Wednesday, just 19 student volunteers, field reporters, and studio producers have been racing around to broadcast 24/7 coverage of the demonstrations, mass arrests, crackdowns from the president’s office, and divisions heightening between professors, students, and other faculty over the students’ rights to protest and the chaos that has unfolded. Oh, and the mayor of New York and the White House weighing in.

The tents that popped up on the east lawn on Wednesday were timed to coincide with university President Nemat Shafik’s appearance before Congress last week; the students’ stated demands were that the university divest from its financial holdings in firms that profit from Israel’s war and occupation in Palestine.

But really, the anger on campus had been building for months. Just days after the deadly Hamas terrorist attack on Oct. 7, dozens of students at Columbia were doxxed after they signed an open letter that stated that the “weight of responsibility for the war and casualties undeniably lies with the Israeli extremist government and other Western governments.” In November, the university, facing sustained pressure from right-wing donor groups and conservative politicians, suspended the charters of student groups Jewish Voice for Peace and Students for Justice in Palestine after they held unsanctioned demonstrations calling for a cease-fire in Gaza. Complaints of antisemitism and Islamophobia have been on the rise at colleges across the country. Barnard College, which is affiliated with Columbia, banned doorway decorations to keep political speech out of the dorms; both schools have tried to restrict protest to designated areas on campus.

There was probably no scenario in which Shafik’s appearance before Congress wouldn’t have blown up. Congressional hearings on the issue of antisemitism on campus have been led by Republicans eager to see leaders of so-called liberal bastions embarrassed and fired, no matter how far under the bus those college presidents been willing to throw their student activists (see: Harvard , the University of Pennsylvania , MIT ).

Still, Shafik seemed eager to avoid the fate of university presidents before her, and “ focused her message on fighting antisemitism rather than protecting free speech,” as the Associated Press put it.

One day later, with Columbia protests and the congressional hearing in the news, Shafik did exactly that, turning the protest into a true national news story by bringing in the NYPD to sweep the encampment and arrest more than 100 of her own students, deeming the tent city a “clear and present danger to the substantial functioning of the University.” That call seemed questionable even to the NYPD: As the Columbia Daily Spectator reported, police Chief John Chell noted that he had not come to the same conclusion. “The students that were arrested were peaceful, offered no resistance whatsoever, and were saying what they wanted to say in a peaceful manner,” Chell said.

On Friday afternoon, when I first arrived at Columbia, the legal consequences of those actions were known, but the disciplinary actions were still trickling in. Some Barnard students had been suspended; the Columbia students were awaiting a similar fate. Those suspended face losing access to campus housing, health care, student dining facilities, and more, along with the inability to finish out the semester, all without so much as a hearing.

But the student protesters were undeterred; many were out of central booking and right back to protesting, and other newcomers joined their ranks. Gone from the east lawn, the demonstration had popped right back up on the adjoining west lawn, where there were hundreds of students less than 24 hours after the sweep, this time without tents. The university had attempted to lock down the campus to outsiders, requiring students to swipe in with active IDs. Columbia’s journalism school undercut that effort slightly, tweeting that any member of the credentialed press needed only to reach out to it to gain access to campus . The result was a handful of credentialed press, a battery of student journalists, and even more student protesters gathered, sitting on blankets, making signs, and typing on laptops.

The tentless encampment was largely calm, punctuated by occasional chants and speeches. There was a surprising bounty of snack foods, and various microcelebrities came through and made remarks, including Chris Smalls, of the Amazon Labor Union, and left-wing commentator Norman Finkelstein.

I ducked into an “onboarding” training in the northeast corner of the lawn, where a group of students was being briefed by organizers about the possibility of another wave of arrests, warning those students about the risks of participating in what was being called a “red role.” Only those students prepared to face the consequences should take part, the organizers warned: Legally, it would likely be a citation, “like a parking ticket.” But the discipline from Columbia could be more severe.

A drone hummed overhead; a helicopter circled. Everyone was instructed to download Signal and join various group chats. Markers were passed around, and the phone number for legal aid was blotted onto forearms. “I’m assuming at least as many people are willing to get arrested as yesterday,” one of the organizers marveled. “There are so many new people here.”

A perimeter was formed by students who held up blankets to shield the organizers and the volunteers from view, not unlike something you’d see on an NFL sideline when a player gets emergency medical treatment. Everyone was encouraged to wear a mask, not just to prevent disease transmission but also to help ensure personal safety. It isn’t uncommon for counterprotesters to come and chant, and film or photograph students. (There was guidance on that too: Don’t engage the counterprotesters.)

Blankets were also used to shield praying students from onlookers after a business school professor, Shai Davidai, who has been referring to the protests as “terrorism,” took a video of Muslim students praying , with the caption: “This is Columbia University right now. Please share to let the world know.” Based on the time stamp of his post, Davidai appeared to be on campus at the same time as me, and he came and left without any noticeable confrontation. Two days later, he would request an NYPD escort to walk around campus.

After the onboarding was complete, word began to circulate that no arrests would be made that day so long as there were no tents on the lawn. The organizers seemed inclined to observe this prohibition.

The mood was tense, and there was no small amount of paranoia. The sheer volume of press coverage of the event has compounded the stress and anger of student protesters on all sides. Some of those who were arrested saw their photos, their personal information, and details about their families written up in the New York Post . President Joe Biden and New York Mayor Eric Adams both issued statements condemning antisemitism on Columbia’s campus, in lockstep with a number of right-wing politicians, but made no move to condemn the arrests. Rep. Elise Stefanik, surely delighted that yet another university president had stridden into her trap, started calling for Shafik to resign. And throughout the weekend, clusters of tents began popping up at additional universities, as other college students followed Columbia’s lead.

I searched for a student organizer with “media training” who might talk with me on the record about the protests, and I kept getting handed off to different people. I eventually spoke with a student organizer named Sarah, who had been arrested the day before, and whose name I can say with almost total confidence was not actually Sarah. She emphasized that the encampment had expanded its early demands, not just for divestment and financial transparency but also for total amnesty for the students who had been suspended or otherwise punished for their role in organizing the protests.

I had a similar experience with a cadre of sympathetic professors who were part of the Barnard and Columbia chapter of the American Association of University Professors, one of whom agreed to be interviewed after checking my driver’s license against my byline, only to back out moments later. The group later produced this statement : “We condemn in the strongest possible terms the Administration’s suspension of students engaged in peaceful protest and their arrest by the New York City police department. … We demand that all Barnard College and Columbia University suspensions and charges be dismissed immediately and expunged from the students’ records.”

The WKCR reporters were having fewer problems getting interviews, bedecked in legitimate press credentials, embedded in their community, and able to swipe in and out of campus at their own discretion. The crowd continued to grow throughout Friday evening.

On Saturday, when I returned, it was increasingly difficult for outsiders to get in. I ran into an old friend and J-school affiliate who helped spirit me into the campus, where the protest looked similar to the day before. Many of the students were drying out after having spent a rainy night on the lawn—the no-tents provision had been abided by—and the blankets were drying out in the sun.

The numbers grew throughout the afternoon. That night, there was a screening of Newsreel 14, Columbia Revolt , a 1968 documentary about the anti-war Columbia student strike that had occurred in the same place decades earlier. Comparisons to that year were being dropped quite a bit, from both protesters and reporters alike. The WKCR students were quick to mention their awareness of the history; the radio station then, too, had been a 24-hour fixture and an authority on the student demonstrations.

By Sunday, the environment was even more locked down. All faculty were required to get a public-safety escort to enter their own office buildings. Columbia announced that it would be doubling security personnel on campus, further restricting access to campus, and stepping up ID checks.

Even the student reporters were starting to feel the squeeze. Late Saturday night, the school’s safety guards entered the studio and directed all the student journalists to immediately vacate the building, thus busting up the 24-hour broadcast streak. It was announced live on the air. After some heated back-and-forth and the intervention of a faculty adviser, the campus police relented. The kids were allowed to keep broadcasting.

welcome speech for manager of school

When it comes to speeches , a lot of people, not only students but even employees and some employers, cringe or find the word scary. It does not have to be as long as you know what you are doing, how you are doing it, and what you are writing about. However, even with all that advice, there are still some people who do not want to be the center of making the speech and would want to find someone else to be able to do it. It goes without saying making a speech is the least worrisome thing you can do and you can present, especially if you know what you are talking about and what you are going to be presenting. If you know who your audience is, then making a speech is nothing short of a wonderful experience.

As we all know, there are a lot of kinds of speeches, and one is  a welcome speech . When we hear a welcome speech, we think of something as easy as welcoming someone. What Is a Welcome Speech for a Meeting?

A welcome speech for a meeting is a kind of speech that is made useful to introduce , greet, and welcome important people or those who have higher influences in your company, group, or organization. This welcome speech caters to simply getting new people to be acquainted with the guests or the visitors. In addition to that, a welcome speech for a meeting is often only done when visitors like shareholders, managers, and governors are planning on attending an important event or an important meeting.

The purpose of a welcome speech is to introduce to the public or to the crowd the names of the people present. It is to welcome them to the event and to be able for them to know who the rest of the people present are. In addition to that, the use of a welcome speech is to introduce the purpose of the meeting, for the people present and for the general public.

How to Write a Welcome Speech for Meeting?

Making a speech may seem easy or difficult, depending on how you are going to look at it. But did you know that before you can make the speech, you have to write it down as well? If you think that is another difficult thing to do, think again. Here are some tips to help you get through that problem .

1. Remember to Take All Details into Account

The details of the welcome speech are basically the names of the people or the important people who are coming. This is the responsibility of the one who is assigned to make the welcome speech. Always make sure that all details needed are within your reach or that you already have them down as notes.

2. Write a Short Draft of Your Speech

Draft it out . It may sound as simple as that, and it really is, but to make a good welcome speech, one must at least learn to draft out what you need to say. Make sure that you know the theme, the people, the event, and the titles or the ranks of the important people, such as manager, the CEO, the president, etc.

3. Use Simple Words When Writing the Speech

If you think using difficult or unfamiliar jargon would impress your guests and audience, you may want to think again. Using jargon that is not familiar to everyone, in general, would only confuse them. Some may be able to understand it while others do not. To avoid this issue, it is best to use simple or commonly used words to write your speech. There are other ways to impress your guests, but using difficult words is not one of them.

4. Practice Pronouncing the Names of the Guests

Since this is a speech, the next best thing to do while you are also writing is to practice it out loud. Practice how you are going to say their names properly. Practicing helps by making you feel less nervous and less prone to forgetting the entire speech. In addition to that, by writing the names of your guests, you may also want to keep an eye on the spelling.

5. Revise If There Are Any Issues with It

Just as making the final output from the draft, it is always best to review, revise, and recheck if there are any issues you may have missed. Revising your work helps to maintain the flow of your speech.

What is a welcome speech for meeting?

A welcome speech is a kind of speech that anyone makes in order to welcome and introduce an important person to the company or an organization.

How do you write a good welcome speech for meeting?

To write a good welcome speech, all you have to do is to follow the steps found in the tips.

What should not be in a welcome speech?

A welcome speech is just a short speech to welcome people. What should not be in it is introducing every single person in the audience or writing a speech about you.

It goes without saying there is really nothing to fear when you are making or writing a speech. Writing a welcome speech is the easiest kind as all you have to do is to know who your honored guests are and the event you are going to be holding the speech in. In addition to that, writing a welcome speech only takes a few minutes especially when you already have a draft in mind. In this case, welcome speeches can be done by just about anyone: employees, students, teachers, and even employers. Anyone can write it; however, it takes good practice to write a very good welcome speech.
