Everyone knows Gen Z are the ones currently deciding what’s in and what’s out.

But do you know what the top phrases they used in 2022 actually mean?

Using Google trends data, Preply – a language learning app – identified the top slang terms used in the last year which had people quickly hunting the internet to learn what they actually meant.

Here’s a breakdown of all the definitions, starting with the most-Googled:

1. Understood the assignment

Think of it as the 2022 edition of the phrase “killing it” – it means when someone put in additional effort and went above and beyond a brief, basically.

It went particularly viral back in 2021 when fans of various actors compared all the different roles they had played, alongside the caption, “they understood the assignment” – a tweet format which continued throughout 2022.

Ooh, probably not the one you want to be associated with.

Pronounced ‘chew-gee’, it means someone behind on trends, out of fashion, and who is a bit cringey. So if you’re still trying to use the word “random” to describe something quirky, you’re probably a bit cheugy in Gen Z’s eyes.

Bussin’ is an adjective for something absolutely amazing, and usually related to food. Like this TikToker, who described Ikea meatballs as “bussin bussin”.

Presumably it stems from “bust a move” but we’re not too sure about the exact origins of this one.

4. Caught in 4k

This is somewhere between “caught in the act”, “caught in the trap” and “caught red-handed”, it usually refers to catching someone out – but with digital evidence.

That can be video proof, a voice recording, a text screenshot or a photo, it all counts.

Think of it like the 2022 edition of “we have the receipts”, except “4k” means the proof against someone is particularly high quality.

On social media, users often attached a camera emoji to really hammer home how it means someone (or their scandal) has been exposed.

5. Sending me

When something is hilarious online, LOL is no longer enough.

So Gen Z invented “sending me” to express how something is so hilarious, they are incapable of carrying on as normal.

Perhaps it originates from “sending me insane”, but either way it has a similar hysterical sentiment to “I’m literally screaming” and “I can’t deal”. So it’s a new way of laughing, but online.

6. Ate that

This is seriously high praise. Despite it sounding like the opposite, “ate that” means someone is doing such an amazing job. We know, it sounds like they consumed the task whole – but maybe that’s a good thing?

7. Main character

This one is somewhat easier to understand.

If you embody main character energy, then you are the central figure in every situation.

TikTok has made this one very popular. Think of that person who everyone looks at when you walk into a room like you’re in a movie – if you’re a main character, you’re this person now.

8. Snatched

This is the ultimate compliment about your appearance.

It began with New York City drag culture back in the 1990s, but has resurfaced to mean anyone who is quite simply, very attractive, perfect and amazing.

It’s like an upgrade of “on point”, you look like perfection.

Confusingly, it was also used to describe a particular waist shape for hourglass figures as well – so you would have a “snatched waist” – but appears to have been extended to apply to appearances as a whole.

Liz Cheney understood the assignment

She never lost sight of a fact that republicans could not understand: the hearings are about saving america..

Through eight House hearings about the Jan. 6 insurrection, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) was calm, unflappable and plain-spoken. She did not grandstand or gloat. She did not apologize to her fellow Republicans for her leading role in the hearings. She did not try to use her position as a campaign ad for her next election. Her demeanor was less that of a politician than a game warden who has encountered a dying animal in the woods and now must club it out of its misery.

In short, Liz Cheney understood the assignment.

The assignment of the select committee was to lay out — particularly for Americans who have been unconvinced by news articles, an impeachment trial, presidential tweets, witness accounts, participant accounts, delusional MAGA shamans and hair-raising video footage that citizens could watch with their own dang eyes — that Donald Trump had not only recognized the possibility of violence at the Capitol, he had essentially willed it into existence. The assignment was to create a thorough historical record. It couldn’t change the past but it might ensure that all Americans vaguely understood the same version of it.

Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.) was no less accomplished in his role as chair of the House select committee on the Jan. 6 attack. He, too, was as thorough and somber as the occasion required. But Cheney’s role as vice chair was a narrower tightrope. Those who still believed that Trump had been wronged, railroaded, bamboozled and generally done dirty were not going to believe otherwise because a Democrat told them so. But it’s possible they might believe a Cheney.

“There will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain,” she had warned her fellow Republicans in the first hearing, with her trademark bluntness. “We must remember that we cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation,” she said during the Thursday night hearing.

I saw more than one pontificator position Cheney’s performance in the hearings as “Liz Cheney’s revenge on Donald Trump — and her own party,” to cite the specific framing by the New Yorker.

Why the Capitol attack hearings have dominated the news cycle

It was a jaded look at the whole affair, but boy howdy, would Cheney have deserved that revenge. Back home in Wyoming, she has been trailing a Trump-backed candidate in her primary election and stands a fair shot of losing her seat. In Washington, her party has already censured her once for participating in the hearings at all.

In a closed-door Republican meeting last year described by the New York Times, Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) reportedly said that Cheney’s failure to support Trump after the insurrection was like looking up in the stands to “see your girlfriend on the opposition’s side.” The sexism was breathtaking: The idea that the third-highest ranking Republican in the House would be thought of not as a senior member of the party but as a groupie whose loyalty could be thrown on and off like a letterman jacket.

I wondered if Kelly was watching the hearings and, if so, whether his weird teenage metaphor was holding up okay: There was the girlfriend, up in the stands, revealing the Capitol rioters to be violent stooges puppeteered by a china-throwing president-baby.

The key thing is that she is not on the opposition’s side, she is on America’s side. What the majority of Republicans struggled to understand, Cheney never lost sight of: The hearings aren’t about spanking a former president. They’re about saving the country.

On Thursday night, she hinted for the first time that she understood what role sexism might have played in the hearings, and she wasn’t thinking of herself at all.

“She sat here alone, took the oath, and testified before millions of Americans,” Cheney said, referencing former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson. “She knew all along that she would be attacked by President Trump, and by the 50, 60 and 70-year-old men who hide themselves behind executive privilege.” She then mentioned other female witnesses, including poll worker Ruby Freeman and Capitol Police Officer Caroline Edwards, calling them “an inspiration to American women and American girls.”

Cheney wore a white blazer to the hearing. It might have been a coincidence, but white was the signature color of suffragists, and Cheney evoked them, too.

“In this room, in 1918, the Committee on Women’s Suffrage convened to discuss and debate whether women should be granted the right to vote,” she said in her closing statement. “This room is full of history, and we on this committee know we have a solemn obligation not to idly squander what so many Americans have fought and died for.”

Liz Cheney understood the assignment. She would not remain silent. She would not hide herself behind her party. She would not do the easy thing, even when doing the hard thing cost her dearly, and the only reward was knowing that the job she’d been tasked with was gruesome. But she’d done it the best she could.

Understanding the Assignment

There are four kinds of analysis you need to do in order to fully understand an assignment: determining the purpose of the assignment , understanding how to answer an assignment’s questions , recognizing implied questions in the assignment , and recognizing the disciplinary expectations of the assignment .

Always make sure you fully understand an assignment before you start writing!

Determining the Purpose

The wording of an assignment should suggest its purpose. Any of the following might be expected of you in a college writing assignment:

• Summarizing information
• Analyzing ideas and concepts
• Taking a position and defending it
• Combining ideas from several sources and creating your own original argument.

Understanding How to Answer the Assignment

College writing assignments will ask you to answer a how or why question – questions that can’t be answered with just facts. For example, the question “ What are the names of the presidents of the US in the last twenty years?” needs only a list of facts to be answered. The question “ Who was the best president of the last twenty years and why?”  requires you to take a position and support that position with evidence.

Sometimes, a list of prompts may appear with an assignment. Remember, your instructor will not expect you to answer all of the questions listed. They are simply offering you some ideas so that you can think of your own questions to ask.

Recognizing Implied Questions

A prompt may not include a clear ‘how’ or ‘why’ question, though one is always implied by the language of the prompt. For example:

“Discuss the effects of the No Child Left Behind Act on special education programs” is asking you to write how the act has affected special education programs. “Consider the recent rise of autism diagnoses” is asking you to write why the diagnoses of autism are on the rise.

Recognizing Disciplinary Expectations

Depending on the discipline in which you are writing, different features and formats of your writing may be expected. Always look closely at key terms and vocabulary in the writing assignment, and be sure to note what type of evidence and citations style your instructor expects.
