Master’s Thesis

In consultation with their faculty advisor, students may choose to undertake and present original research as a culminating experience via the thesis option.

As part of the 39 required credits, thesis students must take 6 credit hours in LIS 700 Thesis Research and 3 credit hours in an approved research methods course. To advance to candidacy and become eligible to enroll in LIS 700, students must complete at least 15 credits of coursework, and defend a thesis proposal in a private meeting with their thesis committee. While it is strongly suggested that all committee members physically attend the thesis proposal defense meeting, remote participation is permitted. Upon approval of the committee, students advance to candidacy, conduct their research, and present their results at a public defense.

The thesis option is introduced in the First Semester Seminar, supported in coursework and regular advising sessions throughout the program, and completed in LIS 700 Research.

Note: Dual degree students may only pursue the thesis option if LIS is their primary degree.

Plan A students may not count more than 6 credits outside of LIS to meet the minimum number of required credits for the degree. One of these courses might be the research methods course.

Students who opt to write a thesis are further governed by the “Plan A” regulations and procedures of the UHM Graduate Division .

For complete information, including a sample course plan, procedures, committee membership requirements, and thesis evaluation criteria, please download and review the Thesis Policy PDF and the Thesis Timeline PDF .

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a thesis.

A thesis is a piece of original research that addresses a question in a formal way. It demonstrates your ability to articulate a problem of interest to the LIS community, apply and critically analyze relevant literature, design and execute a research plan, analyze the data you found, and discuss its implications.

Why should I consider doing a thesis?

Not everyone should. You might benefit from the thesis experience if you are considering a Ph.D. or another advanced degree with a research component. Also, if you plan to work in an academic library you may be required to conduct and publish research. On the other hand, if you are interested in a particular topic and wish to explore it in depth, you should probably start with an independent study project via LIS 699, which is much more flexible. If it turns into a thesis project, up to 4 LIS 699 units can be applied toward the LIS 700 Thesis Research requirement.

By when do I have to decide if I will do a Plan A thesis or a Plan B e-portfolio?

You must inform your advisor of your intent to present a thesis as your culminating degree work by your second semester in the program. This early start is due to the fact that you will also need to take three credits of research methodology and six credits in LIS 700 Thesis Research — in addition to the MLISc degree-required courses.

What is the timeline for completion?

Please view the Thesis Timeline  for detailed description.  This varies by student, thesis project and committee, but a completion timeline should be part of your proposal defense, and it is the student’s responsibility to keep committee members informed of any changes to the agreed-upon timeline. Main steps include pre-candidacy, proposal defense, conducting research/writing the thesis, thesis defense, and revision and submission of final thesis.

Note: You must be enrolled in at least 1 credit of LIS 700 Thesis Research in the semester you intend to graduate. Your committee must receive your final thesis document at least two weeks before the thesis defense, and all thesis requirements must be completed by the Graduate Division deadline, which is well before the end of each semester.

How long does it have to be?

A thesis is much more in-depth than a class paper or research article, and while expectations are very much project-dependent and set by the thesis committee, most theses range between 60-150 pages.

Who do I work with?

A thesis is developed and undertaken under the supervision of a committee consisting of three or more faculty members. A majority, including the chair, must be LIS faculty.  Graduate Division maintains a list of faculty who are eligible to chair and serve on thesis committees .

How do I get faculty members to work with me?

Faculty members participate on thesis committees at their discretion. Just like students, they have different interests, philosophies and time demands that may preclude them from working with you. The best thing you can do is to articulate your interest in considering a thesis as early as possible during your time in the LIS Program, and not later than two semesters before you plan to graduate . Your advisor can steer you toward courses that will demonstrate your ability to conduct research, and faculty members who may be receptive to working with you.

What if I start a thesis and then want to switch to an e-portfolio instead?

There is precedent for this, but you will have to discuss this with your committee chair and advisor first. You will not be refunded for any LIS 699 or 700 courses you have taken as part of your thesis work.

What theses have previous LIS students completed?

Recent theses include:

SIS Assistant Professor Explores How Research Data is Published and Reused

April 19, 2024 by kristen gallant

thesis of library and information sciences

Assistant Professor Kai Li is an experienced information scientist and scholar who has worked for libraries and companies worldwide, in addition to higher education institutions. Li obtained a bachelor’s degree in history from Beijing Normal University, a master’s degree in information science from Syracuse University, and a PhD from Drexel University. During his studies, he developed a fascination with data analysis.

Before coming to UT in 2023, Li worked at a public library in Beijing, China, and as a cataloger at Ingram Content Group.

He said, “Through those jobs, I realized the importance of quality data, especially metadata, and what data can help people do.”

Li said there aren’t many differences between working in library sciences in the United States and working in China.

“The nature of the job isn’t that different. Working in a library requires one to have a specific type of task, especially as a cataloger. We follow very similar rules. In China, there are different catalog standards, of course. But the fact that we analyze the book and record metadata and that metadata will be put into a catalog for people to use—all those things are quite similar,” he explained.

Li has focused his research on the publication of data papers, which is a relatively new topic that has only emerged in the past decade. His most recent work examines how research data is published and used to shape scientific progress.

“There is a significant push for scientists from all research fields to pay more attention to research data. They should consider how to publish and curate their data because publishing the data can bring them a lot of benefits. Understanding how our research data is published, cited, and used is a major research interest for me,” he said.

Traditionally, researchers publish research articles that describe their research and the results obtained. These articles undergo a peer-review process before being accepted for publication. The research design—which includes the methodologies and processes used to gather data—is an essential element of the article, and researchers need to interpret the results in their publications. These scientific publications contribute to the body of knowledge that builds on previous research. However, data papers are different.

“It is still peer-reviewed. But in a data paper, one doesn’t need to explain the research design, but explains how a data set is collected and processed,” he said.

One significant limitation that hinders people from analyzing data papers is the lack of knowledge about the comprehensiveness of data papers included in databases. This issue is especially true in the field of scientometrics, where researchers need to rely on metadata to retrieve data on specific topics. Therefore, the importance of Li’s research lies in providing a solution that enables researchers to use and retrieve data about particular topics effectively.

Li has been teaching an information organization and retrieval course along with an introduction to data analytics and visualization course.

“Using data, analyzing data—and especially using quantitative methods—is part of my academic training. The classes are really about the various analytical methods that students can use to acquire knowledge from data,” he stated.

Li said that, by the time students take his courses, they understand the significance of data metrics and analytics in information sciences and the gaps between the library system and the external landscape of how data and metadata are created and shared.

“I understand that the community feels a sense of urgency as we are falling behind the latest advances. Cataloging is a notable example as the existing library standards have been in place for decades. As a result, our data cannot communicate with the larger technological infrastructure. So, it is still important to update our standards as there is more information and data available. We also need to update our technical services to keep up with the demands of users,” he said.

Li has shared his research at two conferences in the past year. The first was at The International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics (ISSI) conference in Bloomington, Indiana. The second was at the International Conference on the Science of Science and Innovation (ICSSI) in Chicago.

Public library association 2024 conference re-cap with katie hansen.

All the PLA Scholarship Winners with Mychal Threets

Working as a remote part-time graduate assistant and a public library circulation clerk makes me often feel like I’ve got my feet in two different spaces. One minute I’m helping young patrons build a foam fort in the DVD section, and the next minute I’m discussing the merits of trauma-informed librarianship with my entire library management class. It’s a weird yet fulfilling duality.

Thankfully, the Public Library Association (PLA) made it possible for me to meet many more librarians who embrace these and other roles during this year’s 2024 PLA Conference. Through their newly expanded scholarship program, the PLA awarded 151 scholarships to under-represented librarians, part-time librarians, student librarians, and rural librarians, making their attendance possible, (and mine!) I was elated when I received the email confirming my scholarship award, which prompted the realization that I would soon be meeting some of the most integral librarians within today’s public library sphere. Little did I know how significant these three days of learning would soon become to me.

PLA Panelists

The first day of the conference programming was a flurry of information, introductions, and flagrant fangirling. One of my favorite sessions that day was, Anti-Racist Reader Services: Beyond the Basics with Becky Spratford, Robin Bradford, and Yaika Sabat. If ever there was a rally cry to keep fighting the good fight for representation and well-rounded readers advisory, it was this one-hour session, with librarians sitting wall-to-wall on the carpet floor.

“Change does not happen until you are uncomfortable, if you don’t feel challenged, you need to go deeper,” said Spratford.

With a crowd filled with practice-based questions, Bradford, Sabat, and Spratford, gave us each tools, inspiration, and real-world advice on tackling difficult situations to make our libraries a safe and welcoming environment for all.

Frankly, the sense of coming home is a sentiment folks often share when they’ve found a space that makes them feel welcomed, valued, and supported. While that feeling certainly came to light when I switched my career path from marketing to public librarianship; sitting amongst these rows of librarians and community advocates, I understood that I’d finally found a group, and a profession, where I not only felt welcomed, but encouraged, supported, and celebrated. Not a single person at the conference heard me say “I work in a rural library,” and rolled their eyes, or slowed in conversation, rather, they did the opposite. With the additional context, conversations often became more engaging, with attendees offering additional resources to help me learn about practices and programs they had already implemented. It was during this conference that I got to know the heart that beats within the field of public librarianship, so naturally, I fell in love with the profession all over again.

Molly Knox Ostertag and Katie Hansen at the APA Luncheon

However, the excitement didn’t stop there. During lunch on that first day, I had another core-memory come to life while meeting Molly Knox Ostertag, author, and illustrator, at the Audio Publishing Association luncheon event. For folks who have not yet read the incredible graphic novels by her, I not only highly recommend them, but insist you give them a try if you are so able! As an LGBTQIA+ creator, Knox Ostertag was one of the first authors I turned to upon moving through my own coming out journey. Her debut novel, The Girl by the Sea , is filled with intimate and complex female relationships, mixed with a supportive sapphic narrative, and imagery that will forever and always feel like a warm hug. Getting to listen to her and other authors speak at the luncheon event, meeting Knox Ostertag, getting my books signed, and then receiving custom illustrations inside the books, all made my heart do cartwheels in a way I’d forgotten was possible. All this to say, fangirling, asking for pictures, and sharing Dungeons & Dragons stories all made me feel like being a graphic novel nerd was not only a benefit to the libraries I serve, but personally fulfilling for me as well. This entire luncheon event was a much-needed reminder that serving and taking care of myself is just as important as serving and taking care of my patrons and my community.

Another personally impactful program from Wednesday’s sessions was Building a Gender-Inclusive Library: Birth Through Early Elementary  with Pearl Bashakevitz and Beckett Czamecki. These two amazing librarians from the Denver Public Library helped me and other participants learn vocabulary and techniques to confront discrimination head-on while supporting gender nonconforming patrons.

One example, I appreciated was learning not to say, “Boys and girls,” when kicking off a children’s story time, but rather “Okay everyone,” or “Okay friends.” Thankfully, one brave audience member approached the microphone and shared another phrase that they used at her library.

“Hello critters and creatures!”

It made my heart sing to hear the room burst with applause and laughter, and to have our lovely presenters insist on using it themselves at their next story time.

While there are many aspects of myself that can feel undesirable when living in small-town Iowa, at the PLA conference I found a renewed sense of self, and belief in the work I’m doing. As one of my mentors often remind me, “Showing up as yourself gives others permission to do the same.”

The rest of the conference was filled with making meaningful connections, cheering on our Iowa presenter, and getting to know public library leaders from across the country. On the final day of my trip, I was sad to leave, but also immensely grateful for the countless strangers and new friends who took the time to pour into my cup over these past three days. Driving out of Columbus, I made myself promise that one day, I would be back at PLA, only then, I’d be a MLIS graduate and full-time librarian (perhaps even with a presentation of my own!) Until then, I’ll be putting my new knowledge to use and reading as many graphic novels as I can carry.

Artist Demian DinéYazhi´ BFA’14 reimagines the future in piece selected for the 2024 Whitney Biennial

Demian DinéYazhi´ BFA’14 (they/them) focuses their art and life on political involvement and change, so it’s fitting that the artist was invited to show a piece at the prestigious 81st Whitney Biennial : "Even Better Than the Real Thing" — at the same time that another piece of their art was banned.

DinéYazhi´, born to the clans Naasht’ézhí Tábaahá (Zuni Clan Water’s Edge) and Tódích’íí’nii (Bitter Water), was thrilled to be invited to participate in the show along with 70 other artists. Considered one of the most prominent showcases of contemporary American art, the Whitney Biennial is tied to the legacies of such historic American artists as Georgia O’Keefe and Jackson Pollock.

“It was exciting for the Whitney to be aware of my situation and the political content of my work — supporting it, accepting it, and inviting me to contribute to the biennial,” DinéYazhi´says. “At that time, I was dealing with my work being censored and taken down.” DinéYazhi´ says that the piece in question was taken down without receiving communication from the center where it was displayed.

Neon sign art displayed at the Whitney Biennial

The newly commissioned piece, "we must stop imaging apocalypse/genocide + we must imagine liberation, 2024," is a large set of three red neon signs installed on the Whitney’s fifth floor, overlooking the Hudson River, and it’s already been highlighted by the New York Times . The text stems from DinéYazhi´’s third book of poetry, We Left Them Nothing .

The artist says the work reflects a multitude of issues that affect us. “It’s an Indigenous and Queer, Non-Binary Trans response to a lot of the ongoing failures of settler colonialism, heteropatriarchy, capitalist sabotage — the oppressive and manipulative strategies that are utilized by the settler colonial empire to create illusions of power and political supremacy.”

DinéYazhi´ feels deeply affected by the pandemic and the recent awareness of genocide and destruction actively being documented around the world. “Right now we are much more aware and conscious of what it means to speak up about our lives, how messy they are, what it means to walk down the street and question our survival and safety,” DinéYazhi´ says. “I want to continue with the spirit of speaking up and pursuing revolution as a key component to nurturing community care and love for the earth and survival.”

DinéYazhi´ chose to attend PNCA to focus full-time on their art. “I felt really lucky to have had certain conversations and support while at PNCA,” DinéYazhi´ says. The artist advises current students to, “collaborate with fellow students and support one another because you never know what path people will pursue in the future, and what types of support you can provide for one another.”

In 2014, DinéYazhi´ was awarded PNCA’s Thesis Writing Award and the Intermedia Arts Department award for their curatorial project, "Bury My Art At Wounded Knee: Blood and Guts in the Art School Industrial Complex." The project led them to found R.I.S.E.: Radical Indigenous Survivance & Empowerment, an activist initiative dedicated to the education and amplification of Indigenous art and culture.

The Whitney Biennial 2024 runs from March 20 to August 11. Learn more about the show here and the artist here .
