Theri review: Vijay is delightfully human, not his usual cold-face self

Theri has all the essentials one expects in a vijay starrer but central to the film is the father-daughter relationship and that’s where the film scores big..

When I walk into a Vijay film, I know exactly what I would be pounded with--cyclonic action, humongous heroism, nobility and syrupy romance. Vijay’s latest Robin Hood adventure, Theri, has all of these ingredients to make the movie into a masala that Indian cinema terms entertainment. In the first hour of the film’s run time of 158 minutes, I counted five songs and dances -- one of them with Vijay (playing Indian Police Service Officer, Vijay Kumar) and his lady love, Mithra (a Bengali name that Samantha sports), dressed in Arabian costumes! Here’s a curious case of imagination running wilder than the movie’s make-believe creation.

When Vijay is not swaying to the beat of the drums and the hum of the musical notes, he plays Mr Noble in Khaki, bumping off a powerful minister’s (Mahendran in his debut role, and what a fine piece of acting from a man who once directed classics like Uthiripookal and Nenjathai Killathey) son, because he molested and murdered a young Information Technology professional.

A shaken and shattered minister vows revenge which, as he says in his viciously terrifying voice, will be worse than death. Yes, death to Vijay’s wife -- Mithra had by then married the cop -- and his fun-loving mother, portrayed in her characteristic style by Radhika Sarathakumar. The couple’s daughter survives the bloody onslaught in a kind of incident that reminded me of Sholay and Gabbar Singh’s evil demolition of a happy family.

All this in Theri comes to us in a sequence of flashbacks, and the Tamil work’s opening shots are in Kerala, where Vijay in an assumed identity as Jacob Kuruvilla is playing papa, papa to his little daughter, Nivi (Baby Nainika, a brat whose smartness goes beyond cinematic liberty).

And Nivi’s teacher is Annie (Amy Jackson, in her usual wooden avatar, looking positively uncomfortable lisping Malayalam) who flips for Jacob and lets her inquisitiveness get the better of her. She finds out about Jacob’s past, but director Atlee keeps an important part of the man’s mysterious life for the final frame.

Beyond this, there is little novelty in a plot that only appears rehashed (probably for the nth time) with some annoying and ethically questionable police methodology. In this day and age, are we to go home after watching Theri where all that Vijay Kumar does is virtuous? Given the kind of fan craze one saw at the opening of the movie cinema must introspect on the kind of social message it spreads.

However, to be fair to Atlee and his Theri, I must say that he got Vijay into a rare emotional mould. The star actually cries a great deal more than he usually does. He has always had this tendency to mask his feelings with a cold, unexpressive face. This time, Vijay seemed delightfully human, essaying a very different kind of policeman, whose heart beats could be seen on his face.

'Theri' Movie Review & Rating: When Inspiration Reign Supreme!

Theri movie review is here. Starring Ilayathalapathy Vijay , Samantha and Amy Jackson in the lead, Theri is one of the most awaited Tamil movies of the year.

Continue reading our review to know what exactly Theri has to offer Vijay fans and general moviegoers.

Theri Plot:

Even before the movie made it to the big screen, director Atlee had confessed that Theri has a simple plot. I would like to call it a tried and tested plot.

Vijay, leading a simple life, has a hidden past. He then turns into a man full of vengeance. Why is he on a revenge seeking spree and what is his past? Revealing the answers to these questions might deter you from watching the film.

Performances:

If not for Vijay, Theri would fall into the 'not worth watching' category for most movie buffs. Literally, the star actor's ability to fascinate his audience with powerful dialogue delivery, charm and acting prowess, saves Atlee from having a red face.

Nainika's performance is another highlight of Theri . The cute little girl's propinquity with her father, played by Vijay, is the soul of this action entertainer.

Mahendran's much anticipated acting debut is not spectacular to say the least. However, his dialogues are a screamer for which Atlee has to be credited.

Though Samantha's characterization is formulaic, her ability to come up with credible performance stands out. Amy Jackson on the other hand could've done with a better wig. Her performance though is on the average side.

Technicalities:

One of the few positives in the technical department comes in the form of dialogues. As mentioned earlier, Atlee has to be appreciated for penning some impressive dialogues that keeps you hooked somewhat.

Another positive is George C Williams' cinematography. The cameraman has packed richness in every scene, thanks to the usage of different tones and colours. His angles too, are quite impressive.

Interestingly, GV Prakash contributes to both the positive and negative aspects of the film. While his BGM is intriguing and suits the mood well, his songs are a disaster. Wrong placement of songs doesn't help either.

Editor Anthony L Ruben has done a fair job in keeping the film as tight as possible. But there is only so much you can do as an editor while dealing with a movie that has a sombre screenplay. He could've shortened the overall length of the film though.

One of the biggest worries of Theri is its slow and predictable screenplay. While the first half is on the average side, the latter half is almost too slow to believe.

Packed with emotional scenes, Theri suffers from some poor writing by the Raja Rani director. It may also remind you of many successful Tamil movies, which doesn't help the cause.

Overall View:

Getting inspired is absolutely understandable. But, depending on the inspiration in order to sell your own product is a matter of grave concern. With a tried and tested storyline and an ordinary screenplay Theri is far from what was expected. However, it has all the ingredients required for a family entertainer.

THERI MOVIE REVIEW

Finally the day that Vijay fans were eagerly awaiting has arrived. Yes, we see the arrival of one of the most anticipated Tamil films of 2016, Theri . After an experimental Puli, Vijay gets back to his commercial route. The plot of the movie revolves around an ex-cop who is being revenged by an evil politician and the battle between the two. In simple words, Theri is a story about a good father versus a bad father. Vijay is the real Theri of the film; he brings in that spark to the floor. He sports three different makeovers and if his third get up had not been revealed in the trailer, there could have been a surprise element for the audience. Be it as a loving father or as an honest fearless cop or as a caring husband, Vijay shines in every frame. The Theri man has given his best. Overall a performance that will satisfy all center audiences and it is the most convincing cop avatar Vijay has portrayed. 20 minutes into the movie, there is Baasha kind of a moment for Vijay, his fans waiting for the real ‘Vijay kumar’ to erupt. You sense the restlessness, and when it does happen, it is the perfect first day first show fan moment. Special mention for editor Ruben for his fast cut edit pattern in the opening stunt. Jithu Jilladi is also one such addition for the fans to have a blast, creatively canned. One thing that goes against the film is the predictability factor. When there is a suspense moment, you would want the audience not to guess it right. But in Theri ’s case, viewers are able to connect the dots and predict what is going to happen next. Perhaps could be a case of trailer revealing more than needed. Atlee must be lauded for handling the emotional scenes very well, but few such scenes look a little force fitted and dramatic taking the pace away. Two duets also slow down the proceedings.  You would find a momentarily mass scene whenever you feel the screenplay is tilting towards the slower side, which would keep the crowd buzzing now and then. One of the best high points of the film would be the interval block. There are quite a few fight scenes in the film for fans and all are crisply choreographed. The biggest find of Theri is obviously the legendary director Mahendran’s acting skills. His mannerism, style and dialogue delivery are all top class. A couple of battle scenes between Mahendran and Vijay will be talked about. Motta Rajendran travels throughout the film but does not have too many chances to score, but whenever he gets a chance, he makes the best use of it. Theri could be one of Samantha’s best roles; she plays a doctor and has given out a soulful performance. Amy’s makeover in Theri as a teacher based out of Kerala, is quite convincing. Nainika is a doll and her expressions are just adorable. She scores the second highest claps and whistles in the hall, after Vijay. Theri will also be known for its visual brilliance. Be it the action sequences or the songs,  you would find some top notch camera angles as well as lighting, thanks to cinematographer George C Williams. GV Prakash’s background score definitely adds the mass as well as the emotional connect elegantly. One more credible work to his list.

On the whole, Theri is a little predictable emotional ride with some great performances, superlative technical work with a mix of commercial elements.

Vijay's 'Theri' movie review: Twinkle twinkle little sparks

The best thing about this super-cop action drama that has built its base on strong social constructs, pulling in multiple emotive factors that has driven Tamil cinema for eons, and playing a game of jigsaw puzzle with them, is its tempo-rising, heroics-introducing ‘therrrrrri’. And then, Vijay.

The story opens in lush green Kerala, Ithithanam in Kottayam to be exact, that is home to Joseph Vijay Kuruvilla (Vijay) and his button-eyed smarty-pants daughter Nivedita. In comes trouble, and the mask that Vijay has on starts to come off. Past forward, and we collide with his electric and illustrious career as a District Commissioner.

The drama has little novelty; the rhetoric of the good cop whose world has toppled over, retrieving to an ordinary life. But the sparks are within him, ready for an outburst, all at the right time.

As a drama, Theri lacks depth; the story plays it much too safe, and centralizes all its energy on Vijay. Every element in the story is arranged in a way to make him the very desirable cop, father, son, husband, son-in-law, et al. Predictability hovers above the heads like clouds that are about to burst, with a shabby screenplay playing bad weather. But amid all this, Vijay picks his cues, executing them neatly. The actor has all the space he needs to play up his clowning around-yet-task-master cop who rules half the city.

The ladies are far less convincing, what-with their minuscule roles, but baby Nainika does offer some respite with her witty lines. Raadhika Sarathkumar and Rajendran have engaging cameos as opposed to Prabhu who got as takeaway, a still smaller role. Cinematography by George C. Williams pitches the shots to good aesthetic effects.

While sparks do fly, as Vijay tears the screen open, skating through villainous grounds, leaving a trail of his charm, the Theri team could turn around and take a look at the disarray this reluctant fire-cracker left behind.
