“ ہمارے بلاگ” علامہ اقبال پر تقریر “میں خوش آمدید، جہاں ہم مشرق کے عظیم شاعروں اور فلسفیوں میں سے ایک علامہ اقبال کی زندگی اور میراث کا جشن مناتے ہیں۔ یوم اقبال قریب آتے ہی ہم اپنے آپ کو اس قابل ذکر شاعر فلسفی کے گہرے خیالات اور بصیرت افکار میں ڈوبے ہوئے پاتے ہیں۔ یوم اقبال صرف کیلنڈر کی ایک تاریخ نہیں ہے؛ یہ اس شخص کو خراج عقیدت پیش کرنے کا موقع ہے جس نے اپنی شاعری اور فلسفے کے ذریعے تحریک اور تبدیلی کے شعلے جلائے۔ اردو میں ایک طاقتور اور اثر انگیز تقریر تیار کرنے اور پیش کرنے کے لیے جو ‘پاکستان کے روحانی باپ’ کو خراج تحسین پیش کرتی ہے۔ اس سفر میں ہمارے ساتھ شامل ہوں کیونکہ ہم اقبال کی تعلیمات کے نچوڑ اور اردو میں اقبال ڈے پر تقریر کرنے کے فن کو تلاش کر رہے ہیں جو سامعین کے دل و دماغ سے گونجتی ہے۔”

صدر محترم  اور حاضرین ِ محفل ! آج مجھے جس عظیم شخصیت کو سلام عقیدت پیش کرنا ہے  وہ ہے  :

جناب والا! علامہ محمد اقبال بلا شبہ ہماری دعاؤں کا جواب تھے۔ بزم ہستی کا انتخاب تھے۔ آپ عظیم مرد مومن تھے اور قدرت ان جیسے عظیم انسانوں کو تاریخ ساز کارناموں کیلئے تخلیق کرتی ہے۔ برصغیر  پاک و ہند میں چاروں طرف غلامی کے اندھیرے چھائے ہوئے تھے۔ فرزندان اسلام غفلت کی نیند سورہے تھے۔ ایسے عالم میں اقبال کی آواز آزادی کا ترانہ بن کر  گونجی  ۔ آپ کا پیغام قدرت کا انعام بن کر گونجا۔ اسی احساس سے آپ فرماتے ہیں:

میں بندۂ ناداں ہوں، مگر شُکر ہے تیرا رکھتا ہوں نہاں خانۂ لاہُوت سے پیوند اک ولولۂ تازہ دیا مَیں نے دلوں کو لاہور سے تا خاکِ بخارا و سمرقند تاثیر ہے یہ میرے نفَس کی کہ خزاں میں مُرغانِ سحَر خواں مری صحبت میں ہیں خورسند

جناب  صدر ! علامہ محمد اقبال مردِ مومن تھے علامہ محمد اقبال شاعرِ مشرق  تھے اور حکیم الامت تھے  آپ مردِ مومن تھے اور چاہتے تھے کہ  برصغیر کا ہر مسلمان ایمان کی تفسیر بن جائے ۔ آپ نے مردہ دلوں کو حیات نو کا  نغمہ  سنایا  ؛ گرتے ہوؤں کو اٹھایا ؛  غلامی میں بھٹکنے والوں کو صبح آزادی کا جلوہ دکھایا۔ اس مقصد کی خاطر آپ نے ایمان ویقین کے چراغ روشن کئے اور مسلمانوں کو سمجھایا کہ :

جب اس انگارۂ خاکی میں ہوتا ہے یقیں پیدا تو کر لیتا ہے یہ بال و پرِ رُوح الامیں پیدا غلامی میں نہ کام آتی ہیں شمشیریں نہ تدبیریں جو ہو ذوقِ یقیں پیدا تو کٹ جاتی ہیں زنجیریں کوئی اندازہ کر سکتا ہے اُس کے زور بازو کا ! نگاہِ مردِ مومن سے بدل جاتی ہیں تقدیریں

جناب صدر! علامہ محمد اقبال محسن اسلام تھے۔ آپ نے اپنی قوم کو ماضی کے نغمے سنائے ۔ اپنے عظیم اسلاف کی شان دکھلائی۔ آپ کی پوری شاعری ہمارے روشن ماضی کے جلوؤں سے آباد ہے۔ آپ چاہتے تھے کہ آج کے مسلمان اپنے عظیم بزرگوں کے کارناموں پر ایک نظر ڈالیں تا کہ انہیں آزادی کی قدر و قیمت کااحساس ہو سکے۔ اسی لئے کہتے ہیں۔

کبھی اے نوجواں مسلم !تدبر بھی کیا تو نے وہ کیا گردوں تھا جس کا ہے تو اک ٹوٹا ہوا تارا تجھے اس قوم نے پالا ہے آغوش محبت میں کچل ڈالا تھا جس نے پاؤں میں تاج سردارا

 جناب صدر! اقبال نے مشرق کو دیکھا۔ تعلیم کیلئے یورپ کی درس گاہوں میں گئے۔ وہاں کی تہذیب و تمدن کی چکا چوند دیکھی۔ انہیں احساس ہوا کہ یورپ کی چمک دمک عارضی ہے جبکہ اسلام کا تہذیبی جمال حقیقت میں لازوال ہے۔ آپ   کی نظروں میں عشق مصطفٰی ﷺ    کا نور بسا ہوا تھا اس لئے یورپ کی تہذیب آپ کو متاثر کرنے میں ناکام ہو گئی۔ چنانچہ بڑے فخر سے محبت رسول ﷺ  کا اظہار کرتے ہوئے  فرماتے ہیں۔

خیرہ نہ کرسکا مجھے جلوۂ دانش فرنگ سرمہ ہے میری آنکھ کا خاک مدینہ و نجف

جناب والا! علامہ اقبال بڑوں کے شاعر بھی تھے اور بچوں کے بھی۔ آپ کا پیغام مسلمانوں کیلئے بھی تھا اور عالم انسانیت کیلئے بھی۔ آپ کو ملت کے نوجوانوں سے خصوصی پیار تھا۔ آپ ان نوجوانوں کو شاہین کے روپ میں دیکھنا چاہتے تھے۔ وہ شاہین جو ہمیشہ محو پرواز رہتا ہے۔ آسمانوں کی بلندیوں کو چھوتا ہے۔ اسی لئے آپ مسلمان نوجوانوں کو شاہین بننے کا پیغام دیتے ہوئے شاہین کے حوالے سے کہتے ہیں۔

کِیا میں نے اُس خاک داں سے کنارا جہاں رزق کا نام ہے آب و دانہ بیاباں کی خلوت خوش آتی ہے مجھ کو ازل سے ہے فطرت مری راہبانہ نہ باد بہاری، نہ گُلچیں، نہ بُلبل نہ بیماریِ نغمۂ عاشقانہ خیابانیوں سے ہے پرہیز لازم ادائیں ہیں ان کی بہت دلبرانہ ہوائے بیاباں سے ہوتی ہے کاری جواں مرد کی ضربتِ غازیانہ حمام و کبوتر کا بھُوکا نہیں مَیں کہ ہے زندگی باز کی زاہدانہ جھپٹنا، پلٹنا، پلٹ کر جھپٹنا لہُو گرم رکھنے کا ہے اک بہانہ یہ پورب، یہ پچھم چکوروں کی دنیا مِرا نیلگوں آسماں بیکرانہ پرندوں کی دُنیا کا درویش ہوں مَیں کہ شاہیں بناتا نہیں آشیانہ

صدر محترم! اقبال کی آواز دلوں میں اتر گئی اور فرزندان اسلام شاہین اسلام بن گئے۔ اقبال ماضی حال اور مستقبل کے شاعر تھے۔ سب سے بڑھ کر آپ کی خواہش تھی کہ مسلمان حضور نبی کریم ﷺ  کے سچے غلام بن جائیں۔ محبت رسول  ﷺ میں وہ قوت ہے جو بندوں کو خدائی کے آداب بخشتی ہے۔ غلاموں کو آقائی سکھاتی ہے۔ جو نبی کریم ﷺ  کا غلام بن جاتا ہے زمانہ ہی اس کے سامنے نہیں جھکتا بلکہ لوح و قلم بھی اس کے بن جاتے ہیں۔ میں اپنی تقریر کا اختتام اقبال کے اس پیغام پر کرنا چاہتا ہوں :

نگہ الجھی ہوئی رنگ و بو میں خرد کھوئی گئی ہے چار سو میں نہ چھوڑ اے دل فغان صبح گاہی اماں شاید ملے اللہ ہو میں

Good day! Let’s talk about something that’s been sparking human curiosity for centuries. It’s big, it’s vast, it’s full of mysteries – it’s the universe! Space, as we call it, is an endless expanse, much like an infinite dark blanket, sprinkled with bright stars.

In the first place, let’s discuss the stars in the sky. You see them every night, sparkling like little diamonds. They look tiny to us, but they’re actually gigantic balls of gas, burning a very, very long way away. Our very own Sun is also a star. It’s the closest one to us, and that’s why it appears so big and bright. Stars are important because they provide light and heat. They’re like the streetlights of the universe.

Secondly, let’s talk about the planets. We live on Earth, which is one of eight planets in our solar system. The others are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Each one is unique. For example, Mars, known as the Red Planet, and Venus, often called Earth’s twin. We’ve sent spacecraft to all these planets to learn more about them.

Next, let’s talk about something really exciting – space travel. Astronauts are brave explorers who get to go on amazing adventures in space. They travel in spacecraft and sometimes live in space stations, like the International Space Station. They do important work, like studying the effects of living in space and conducting experiments that help us understand more about our universe. Some astronauts have even walked on the moon!

Finally, let’s think about the future of space exploration. Scientists are working on ways for humans to live on other planets, like Mars. Can you imagine that? Living on a different planet! And who knows what else we might discover in the vastness of space. There could be other life forms out there, maybe even civilizations like ours.

Space is a truly fascinating subject. There’s so much we don’t know yet, and that’s what makes it so exciting. Every day, scientists are discovering new things about our universe. And who knows? Maybe one day, some of you will become those scientists, or even astronauts, exploring the unknown and making amazing discoveries. About The Author

Mohammad Iqbal (1877-1938), a descendant of a Kashmiri Brahmin family that had embraced Islam in the seventeenth century, was born and settled in Sialkot. After a traditional education in Arabic, Persian, and Urdu, he was exposed to a liberal education that defined the contours of his thought and his poetry during the entire period of his life. Beginning his educational career at the Scottish Mission School, he went on to acquire his M. A. in Philosophy, before joining Trinity College, and later earning the degree of Bar-at-Law. He furthered his education by getting the degree of doctorate from Germany on The Development of Metaphysics in Persia. He worked in different capacities at different points of time; he taught philosophy, practised law, got involved in politics, and also attended the second Round Table Conference. Even while he favoured the idea of the creation of Pakistan and is venerated there as the national poet, he wrote the famous patriotic song that celebrates the greatness of India.  King George V decorated him with knighthood and he was called Sir Mohammad Iqbal thereafter. Iqbal wrote both in Persian and Urdu, and is often regarded as the poet-philosopher of the East who addressed the Muslim ummah, believed in the philosophy of wahdatul wujood, and propounded the philosohy of khudi, or selfhood, which called for self-realisation and the discovery of the hidden talent with love and perseverance. Beyond that lay the stages of complete submission and forgetfulness which, he thought, was the ultimate stage of khudi. Iqbal dreamt of the ‘complete man’ and also entered into a metaphoric dialogue with the divine. His poetry emerged as a remarkable site where message and art coalesced, as he re-configured major poetic devices like metaphor, myth, and symbol to re-visit history, philosophy and the Islamic faith to develop his individual vision. He has left behind his collections of poems, Asraar-e Khudi, Rumooz-e Bekhudi, Baang-e Daraa, Baal-e Jibreel, Payaam-e Mashriq, Zaboor-e ‘Ajm, Javed Naama, Zarb-e Kaleem, and Armaghaan-e Hijaz, apart from his lectures collected in English as The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam, and other works on the Eastern worldview.

Nasa is building Moon bases – and my time living in ‘space’ is a blueprint

I spent a week battling anxiety, checking CO2 levels and dehydrating food scraps, but future moonwalkers will have it much worse

As I push the red airlock handle down and step into our space station, I half-wonder: will I end up losing my mind and have to be hauled out? After all, in the current hit television drama, For All Mankind, one of the first astronauts to live long-term on the Moon does just that.

I’m not really on the Moon, of course, but sealed up instead in something called the Space Analogue for Moon and Mars (SAM) – a research centre in the desert of southern Arizona that boasts of being “as close as you can get to living on Mars without reducing gravity or dropping the temperature to 100C below zero.” Ditto that for the Moon.

I will spend a week inside, living in a pressurised habitat meant to simulate missions beyond the Earth , helping us prepare for our first tottering steps as a multiplanetary species.

I’m a little anxious. I’ve been in extreme environments and know the price you can pay. Twenty years ago, I spent a month living in tents with scientists in Antarctica. I began to suffer from insomnia, obsessiveness (I kept counting remaining pairs of clean underwear) and, finally, from serious depression. Before the expedition ended, I was evacuated by aircraft after having suicidal thoughts.

Thankfully, this mission – named Imagination 1 – would go a lot better than that.

I was living in SAM with three artists – a poet, a textiles designer and a dancer – from the University of Arizona, where I’d just retired as a creative writer. If we are to make permanent homes in space, after all, we will need to take our cultural lives with us. Our dancer Liz George, for example, rehearsed moves for when she’d don a space suit on a simulated moonwalk. I took notes, planned articles and wrote daily mission reports. 

But practicalities dominated, as they would on the surface of the Moon or the Red Planet. We monitored CO2 levels. We recycled our breath in the form of condensate into drinking water. We took turns cleaning the snug 1,200-square-foot facility – its crew quarters, engineering bay and greenhouse module. We prepared dinner and dehydrated the food scraps – ultimately to be fed to mushroom colonies for future “astronauts” at SAM. We had to monitor and adjust the pressurisation system.

Our only contact was by email, as though we were in deep space, cut off from the rest of humanity, and we felt our isolation deeply.

All this despite training in advance for the mission, meeting multiple times before “launch” and becoming a close-knit crew, which was essential as we worked from morning to night on our projects and on maintaining SAM’s high-tech systems. We even projected giant images of the Moon on the walls. Sometimes it really felt like we were there.

There were problems, inevitably. Small groups in confined spaces experience poor sleep, along with stress that can lead to moodiness, tempers, anxiety, mild to severe depression, even decreased dexterity. As the only man on the crew, I moved my sleeping pad from the crew quarters to under a shelf in the Engineering Bay. Even that didn’t stop the women from hearing my disruptive snoring. Days were long with housekeeping: from cleaning dishes with very little water to final checks of air pressure and the hydroponics rack at bed-time. We were tired. Little irritations can take on major proportions in confinement. 

But, to our credit, we handled disruptions well. We checked in on each other’s well-being. When one of us wanted space, the others kept quiet and distant. Yet when something had to be done, we told each other – and never flinched. There wasn’t a single eye roll.

But add a few more weeks to Imagination 1 and that surely would have changed. I know from my time in Antarctica that the extreme nature of such places can induce the “thousand-yard stare” and worse.

Those are the challenges that the real astronauts of the Artemis programme will face. Nasa is sending astronauts on a lunar fly-by later next year followed by an actual landing with Artemis 3 , scheduled for autumn 2026. The crew will land at the dramatic, rugged south pole region of the Moon, where water ice lurks in permanently shadowed craters. The sun is low on the horizon, casting long light and longer shadows. 

This, though, is the mission that may start a new era of long-term exploration and science, for that ice can be turned into drinking water, air and rocket fuel. 

The Artemis 3 crew will spend several days on the Moon’s surface, longer than any Apollo mission, and the vision (shared by China, which is advancing its own space missions ) is for permanent “base camps” on the Moon. Some of those may in fact be underground, in empty lava tubes shielded from the many dangers of lunar living.

The Moon’s surface is beset by sweeping sheets of radiation, from the Sun and other stars, even other galaxies, near-light-speed particles that slice through any living tissue that is not protected, cutting DNA molecules like rice paper and leading, eventually, to cancerous mutations. Long-term Moon-dwellers could suffer also from the lingering effects of extended exposure to one-sixth gravity. A lot of exercise will be required to keep hearts, muscles and bone-density strong.

Moondust is also a huge problem. The Apollo astronauts after 1969 were vexed by the sharp-edged powder, which got under their fingernails and into their noses, lungs, mouths and eyes. Apollo 12’s Alan Bean said residual dust in the lunar module cabin “made breathing without the helmet difficult, and enough particles were present … to affect our vision.”

Yet from this grey land we will try to conjure the green world . In 2015 and 2016, Scott Kelly grew the first flowers in space – zinnias. He became absorbed by the sprouts, the leaves, the blossoms. Before International Space Station astronauts dine on lettuce leaves grown in hydroponic racks, they eat up the views, smells and textures of these reminders of the Earth. They’ll do exactly the same on the Moon.

They will also create, as we did. For as we came to the end of our week it was clear to me that culture will become as essential in space as CO2 scrubbers, radiation shields and Moondust filters. If we don’t bring creativity along, our lives will be impoverished – both for the astronauts and for the rest of us, who will want to know what it’s like.

I was the last of the four people in the group to go on a simulated moonwalk. As I donned my spacesuit, helped by my crewmates into the bulky, multi-layer garment, I further appreciated just how hard it is to be an astronaut. The fingertips of the gloves were big and inflexible, yet I would use them to press buttons on a camera. I remembered being claustrophobic in all my cold-weather gear in Antarctica. The pressure suit was far more confining. After being fitted into my helmet, air flowed like a constant river by my ear. It felt a bit awkward at first, then, tip-toe by tip-toe, arms wide as though I were floating, I grew accustomed to this new effect on my body. I wasn’t exactly graceful, but I smiled. As a 60-something child of Apollo and amateur astronomer, I knew: this was as close to the Moon as I would ever get.

Good morning to everyone in this room. I would like to thank the principal, the teachers, and my dear friends for allowing me to speak to you today about space. Space is a continuous, empty area or expanse that is available, free, and limitless. It is an infinite three-dimensional space where things move and behave in relation to one another.

It is the area above and surrounding our planet where neither air nor light can be spread. It is a void that is empty of any material in which sound cannot travel. Only when the earth is viewed from space does it appear circular. Just land and sea are visible. Because there is no gravity in space, objects float in the air.

The first satellite, known as Sputnik, was launched into space by the former Soviet Union in 1957, marking the beginning of space travel. The launch of several satellites and probes into orbit. This is done to keep an eye on the planet, gather information about the temperature and weather, support contemporary navigation systems, study distant celestial bodies, and conduct space-related scientific research. On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first person to enter space.

While operating in space, Sunita Williams, an astronaut, achieved a number of firsts. She is most recognized for her spacewalks and work on the International Space Station. She broke the previous record for the longest space journey by a woman and gave thousands of kids and students a glimpse of life in orbit. She praised the view of the planet as breathtaking and claimed she could sit at the spacecraft’s window and gaze at it for hours. Thank you.

Violations of women’s reproductive health rights trigger rise in preventable deaths

African women are 130 times more likely to die due to pregnancy or childbirth complications than women in Europe and Northern America, the UN sexual and reproductive health agency (UNFPA) said in a new report published on Wednesday.

Interwoven Lives, Threads of Hope: Ending inequalities in sexual and reproductive health and rights , reveals that more than half of all preventable maternal deaths occur in countries which are in a state of crisis or distress.

It highlights the role that racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination play in blocking progress on sexual and reproductive health issues. 

Women and girls trapped in poverty are more likely to die prematurely due to lack of sufficient healthcare if they belong to minority groups or are trapped in a conflict setting, according to the findings. 

"For sexual and reproductive health issues, the sad truth is that rather than all hands on deck and working together, there's kind of a polarization dialogue, a divisive type of attitude, and in a way, a 'second class citizen' attitude for the rights of women and girls," UNFPA Executive Director  Natalia Kanem said in an interview with UN News .

Overall, there have been significant advances in sexual and reproductive health it became a global sustainable development priority three decades ago.

“ In the space of a generation, we have reduced the unintended pregnancy rate by nearly one fifth , lowered the maternal death rate by one third, and secured laws against domestic violence in more than 160 countries,” UNFPA Executive Director said, launching the report.

Stalled progress

But progress is slowing down or stalled in several key areas. In a world where a quarter of women cannot say no to sex with their partner and nearly one in 10 have no say over contraception, 800 women die every day giving birth – a disturbing figure that has remained unchanged since 2016 .

Nearly 500 of those preventable deaths per day are happening in countries living through humanitarian crises and conflicts. 

“ The world made zero progress in saving women from preventable deaths in pregnancy and childbirth ,” said Ms. Kanem, adding that for the first time, data was collected on whether women's bodily autonomy is strengthening over time.

In 40 per cent of countries where information is available, autonomy is weakening due to an inability to reach “those furthest behind”, she added.

There is a clear disparity between the global North and South, West and East, when it comes to contraceptives, safe birth services, respectful maternity care, and other essential services, the report documents.

Pockets of inequality

Yet, even within those regions there are “pockets of inequality”, the report underscores. Women of African descent in the Americas face higher maternal mortality rates compared to white women , which is especially evident in the United States where it's three times the national average. 

Indigenous and ethnic minorities also face elevated risks related to pregnancy and childbirth. 

Within Europe, in Albania, for example, over 90 per cent of Roma women from the most marginalized socioeconomic groups had serious problems in accessing healthcare compared with only five per cent of ethnic Albanian women from the most privileged strata. 

Additionally, women with disabilities are up to ten times more likely to experience gender-based violence, and individuals of diverse sexual orientation and gender expression encounter significant violence and barriers to care.

No ‘one-size-fits-all’ solutions 

The report highlights the importance of tailoring programmes to the needs of communities and empowering women and girls to craft and implement innovative solutions. 

It also calculates that if additional $79 billion are invested in low and middle-income countries by 2030, 400 million unplanned pregnancies could be averted, a million lives saved and $660 billion in economic benefits could be generated . 

 “Women are half of society and women are stepping up to claim their full rights. We believe that the ability of human society to prosper really depends on looking at who's vulnerable,” Ms. Kanem told UN News .

The ability to secure reproductive health rights, the UNFPA Executive Director believes, is another major challenge.   

“It is indeed the responsibility of men to be champions of women's reproductive rights, of everyone's reproductive rights,” Ms. Kanem said.

SpaceX launches Starlink satellites on company's 40th mission of 2024 (video)

Liftoff occurred at 6:40 p.m. ET today (April 18).

SpaceX launched its 40th mission of the year this evening (April 18).

A Falcon 9 rocket carrying 23 of the company's Starlink internet satellites lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida today at 6:40 p.m. EDT (2240 GMT).

The Falcon 9's first stage came back to Earth about 8.5 minutes after launch as planned, making a vertical landing on the SpaceX droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas, which was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

It was the seventh launch and landing for this particular booster, according to a SpaceX mission description . Two of the rocket's previous six flights sent astronauts to the International Space Station — the private Ax-2 and Ax-3 missions, which launched in May 2023 and January of this year, respectively. 

The Falcon 9's upper stage, meanwhile, will continue hauling the 23 Starlink satellites toward low Earth orbit this evening, ultimately deploying them there about 65 minutes after liftoff.

Twenty-seven of the 40 orbital missions that SpaceX has launched so far in 2024 have been devoted to building out the Starlink megaconstellation. That network is already huge: It currently consists of more than 5,760 operational satellites, according to astrophysicist and satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell.

The 40-launch tally does not include the March 14 liftoff of SpaceX's Starship megarocket, which the company is developing to take people and cargo to the moon, Mars and beyond. Starship reached orbital velocity during that mission, which was the vehicle's third test flight overall.

After Chhattisgarh op, Urdu press praises campaign against Maoists — ‘imperative to eliminate’

New Delhi: Although elections continued to dominate Urdu newspapers this week, the alleged encounter killing of 29 Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar drew much praise, with one editorial calling it a “commendable step towards peace”.            

The editorial in Roznama Rashtriya Sahara on 18 April said India had been grappling with Naxalism for decades and that it was “imperative to eliminate the bloodthirsty Naxalites” operating in states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra.

“Recently, security forces in Chhattisgarh achieved significant success by eliminating 29 Naxalites, marking a crucial victory. The District Reserve Guard and the Border Security Force conducted the operation, one of the biggest against Naxalites in this decade,” the editorial, titled ‘Revolution doesn’t come from bombs and guns’, said. 

Meanwhile, the election frenzy touched a fever pitch, with all three prominent Urdu newspapers —  Siasat , Inquilab , and Sahara — dedicating much of their space to the activities in various political camps. 

Besides this, editorials also commented on Iran’s missile attack on Israel, urging the two countries to de-escalate tensions.

Lok Sabha elections

In its editorial on 19 April, Siasat said that instead of presenting a report on its work in the last 10 years, the BJP and its candidates are trying to “ensnare” the public in “trivial issues”.  

“The electoral process has been turned into political mudslinging through derogatory comments. Efforts have been made to diminish the importance of the electoral process by personal remarks. The heinous allegations against opposition leaders have no precedent,” it said. 

Meanwhile, important issues such as unemployment remain unaddressed, the editorial said. 

“There’s no explanation why the promise of providing 20 million jobs annually made 10 years ago hasn’t been fulfilled. No answer was given about why the previous levels of employment have not been maintained,” it said.

On 19 April — the day of the first phase of voting — Sahara wrote about the pivotal role that young voters play, emphasising how their participation could determine election outcomes.

Inquilab ’s editorial that day, meanwhile, focused its attention on the BJP’s election strategy, claiming that while slogans like “Ab ki baar, 400 par” and banners featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi may give the outward feeling of widespread support for the party, other factors such as Rajput’s protests in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat could affect results.

The BJP is also worried about the Opposition’s cohesion and alliances in some states, it said.

Siasat ’s editorial on 18 April accuses the BJP of leveraging the Ram Temple for electoral gains despite the Election Commission of India’s rules expressly forbidding political parties from using divisive tactics.   

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders frequently highlighted the temple in their campaign speeches, posing questions about the impartiality and effectiveness of the Election Commission, this editorial said, calling on the poll body “to address these concerns directly and ensure that elections focus on public issues rather than religious appeals”.

Sahara ’s editorial on 17 April, spoke about using black money in the electoral process, worrying that such a trend raises questions about “electoral integrity” and “undermines” the democratic system. 

It did not take any names but said that political parties that “claim to advocate for stabilising the economy by eliminating black money are ironically at the forefront of this practice”. 

“First, the origin of such a large influx of black money raises concerns. It’s evident that a significant portion of this black money is generated within our current system, (and is) accumulated and utilised by political leadership during political and electoral processes. Political parties and candidates are using black money to purchase votes, essentially corrupting the process of government formation,” the editorial said.

Siasat ’s editorial the same day spoke about the BJP’s challenges in south India, saying that its “excessive focus there indicates that it is losing ground in the north”. 

“In the current scenario, it’s essential for the voters of south India to use their vote with utmost prudence and understanding,” the editorial said. 

Palestine-Israel

The US veto of Palestinian statehood in the United Nations and Iran’s missile attack on Israel took up significant space in the Urdu press’s front pages and editorials this week. 

On 18 April, Inquilab ’s editorial said that while neither the Palestinian problem nor the conflict is new, it is the first time that there’s some consensus against Israel’s “illegal occupation”. 

“Borders have shifted, prompting people worldwide to understand the Israel-Palestine situation, empathise with Palestinians, and express solidarity. Gazans have received unprecedented support, although it came at a great cost,” it said. 

Sahara ’s editorial on 16 April had a note of caution for Israel, saying any retaliatory attack against Iran after the latter’s missile strike could escalate into a major conflict in the region.

Despite the two countries being far away, any attack from either side would mean a violation of the airspace of neighboring countries and could escalate the conflict, the editorial said. “It’s imperative for major world powers to play a constructive role in preventing such escalation.”

Inquilab ’s editorial that day also focussed on the attack, which it said has “caused widespread anger” in Israel .

“Despite Israel’s perceived invincibility, it has faced two attacks in the last 6-7 months — the Hamas attack on 7 October 2023 and Iran’s more serious attack on 14 April. These (Iran’s) assaults were aimed at minimising civilian casualties, preserving infrastructure, and preventing Israeli retaliation,” it said.
