Speech and Language Homework Calendars
- December 29, 2017
Are you looking for an easy way to send home activities for your speech and language students to practice their skills? I have been using these calendars for years now, and have had great responses from my students and their parents! I have a set of articulation calendars and a set of language calendars. Both sets are updated every calendar year as well as at back to school time. There are color versions of the calendars as well as black and white for a low ink option. If you have access to color printing at your school, I suggest using the color versions- they are bright and fun! The black and white versions are fun too, and students can color the pages themselves.
ARTICULATION
In the articulation calendars, students are asked to find a variety words that start with their sound and use their sound in connected speech in a variety of activities. Here are some examples of daily activities included on the articulation calendars:
Each day on the calendar has a small icon in the corner that students can color in when they complete the task.
In the language calendars, students are asked to answer questions that focus on categorization, describing, story telling, analogies, idioms, synonyms, antonyms, plural nouns, past tense verbs, auditory comprehension for sentences, auditory memory, calendar vocabulary (yesterday, today, tomorrow, etc.). Here are some examples of activities in the language calendars:
COMMUNICATION LOGS In each set of calendars, there is also a parent letter and communication log that can be sent home. The parent letter describes how to use the calendars. The communication log gives parents a chance to let you know what went well and what the student needed help with.
These calendars are available at my TpT store in a BUNDLE or you can purchase the articulation or language calendars separately.

In addition to working on specific sounds, each activity can be a helpful tool for children with the most common types of speech disorders including; articulation disorder, apraxia of speech, autism, cerebral palsy, cleft palate, Down’s syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, language disorder, speech delay or stuttering. We have included a space at the bottom of each page to write the specific speech sound that your child is working on. Is it R, S, T, L, CH or SH? These printable calendars are not designed to create stress or anxiety in your child, instead, just a creative way to fine-tune any speech disorders or challenges and have fun at the same time.

Why is Using Speech Therapy Calendar Activities in Your Daily Routine Brilliant?
- August 14, 2022
Speech therapy calendar activities are so much fun and can incorporate a wide variety of skills and goals. There are so many ways to use speech therapy calendar themes in therapy to help our students. From teaching calendar skills to themed therapy, to daily speech/language calendars of activities.
Speech Therapy Calendar
How many times have you tried to ask your students about the season or month you were in or the order of the months of the year, and they were unable to adequately express them? I have so many students who are unable to differentiate between seasons/months/holidays.
Because of this, I have compiled some activities to teach calendar skills. I have also added and incorporated some themed and monthly calendar activities to add into your therapy rotation. I hope this will have everything you need to start using speech therapy calendar activities right away.
SLP School Calendar
Almost every pre-k and early elementary school classroom start their day with calendar time during circle time. But how are our students supposed to participate in these classroom activities if they do not understand different calendar parts and features? That’s where we come in. Calendar skills are so important for kids so that they can learn about and understand time, passing time, how to keep/read a schedule, planning ahead, planning for big events, and understanding due dates.
Calendar Concepts
The following are some of the key concepts that our students will need to understand in order to participate in calendar time:
- Days of the week
- Weekdays vs weekends (or school days vs non-school days)
- Yesterday, today, tomorrow
- Dates/numbers on a calendar
- Holidays and special events
- Daily weather and basic weather patterns
Visuals are key when teaching these concepts and visual schedules and calendars can be a huge help. There are also lots of fun songs to help teach these concepts.
Check out this free and editable visual schedule available in my freebie library .
Day/Week/Month
When using a big monthly calendar, you can mark off the day each day to visually show the difference in time for a day, vs week, vs month. Be sure to talk about what the little numbers on the calendar are for and what number the month could be. Writing out the full date is a good way to show each of these. You can also incorporate the sun and moon into these concepts. That will give your early learners a concrete way of knowing how a long day is and day vs night.
Concepts of Time
Understanding time is a key component for later developing skills for a lot of our kiddos and should not be overlooked. Teaching yesterday, today, and tomorrow is important for understanding past, present, and future. These skills are needed for later developing language skills such as answering when questions and understanding the sequence of a story.
Speech Language Calendar of Activities
For my younger classes and full-time ESE classes, I like to collaborate with the teachers on what themes they are using to help carry over these concepts. A lot of time times, at the beginning of the year, we will do a unit on the sun and moon, weather, and seasons. Working together to make sure we are using the same vocabulary and concepts is a huge help to our kids and keeps everyone on the same page. Working together is beneficial for everyone involved!
Speech Therapy Theme Calendar
Who doesn’t love a good them for therapy? I like to have a general idea of what topics I am going to hit during the school year, leaving some flexibility for student interests and current topics/events. You can fit all kinds of different activities for all varieties of goals into almost any theme. So even working with a variety of ages (grades K – 5th for me) and individual needs, I can still stick to the same overall themes and differentiate based on abilities and needs.
I start with my four main units based on seasons: Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. These are my main themes and I work in holidays and other units in between them as I can.

Have the child practice lip and tongue placement.
Practice the sound in isolation multiple times. Give the child a star for each attempt.
Work on syllables by combining the middle letter with each of the outer vowels. Switch the order of the letter with the vowels to practice initial, medial, and final syllables (ra, ar, ara, etc).
Every time the child says the target word make a star in 1 of the 5 circles at the bottom of the card.
Use the chart to see the average age a child produces certain english sounds. This is based off of research published in 2018. Click on the letter to jump to the worksheets or scroll down to see the worksheets in alphabetical order.

Five Fab Freebies: Summer Speech & Language Materials
- May 31, 2015
I know everyone is ready for the summer! I have to be honest with you though, I am not looking forward to it! You think I’m crazy, right? Well, I’m currently 6 months pregnant and every day in the summer heat seems like an eternity for me. While I generally love the summer, when I am pregnant, I do not! Although I will probably drop off the face of the earth in August when baby #2 is born, I do have a couple of Five Fab Freebies posts for you planned in June and July, so please check back! These are the great freebies that I’ve rounded up for you to help with your summer caseload:

This one page free handout is designed for SLPs to send home to parents of elementary & middle school students for suggestions on how to practice good speech and language skills through games and apps. This is a great option to send home over the summer or whenever parents ask for ideas on how to work with their children at home!
2) Summer Fun with Language Sampler from The Speech Space. This is a sample of a larger product . In this sampler, you will get: 6 discussion cards, 8 WH-question cards, 6 vocab cards with 6 matching definitions.
3) All Around the Campground Board Set by GoldCountrySLP. This Candyland-style game board is just what you need for ages PreK through primary aged students. The game is open ended and can be used to address a variety of language.
4) Summer Homework Calendars from Speech Therapy Fun by Jennifer Bradley. These speech and language summer homework calendars have daily suggestions for quick and fun activities. If the student completes the entire week of activities, he/she gets to glue a star on the ‘I Did My Work’ chart.
5) Summer Speech Freebie: Gardening from Teach Speech 365. This is part of a larger packet . The freebie includes: vocabulary cards, categories, and past tense verbs.
Also, you might have noticed that this post went up on a Sunday. I’ve decided to start posting these on Sundays in an effort to help you plan your week, rather than on Fridays when you’re probably winding down. So, stay tuned for these FFF to go live on Sundays from here on out. Have a great summer and stay cool!!!

Hi Hailey, Thanks so much for reaching out! I tried printing the BW and it is very slightly fuzzy on my end. I'm wondering if you try taking the color version and simply printing that one in BW instead. All my best, Melissa

How do we download the zip file? I don't see a link anywhere.
Hi Jenny, At the bottom of this post, there is a form to put your name and email address to have the free planner emailed to you in a zip file. If you don't see the email you might want to check your spam or junk folders. All my best, Melissa

It didn't give me the option to make a copy when I downloaded. Any suggestions?
Hi Apryl, If you click on the folder you can download the folder and have your own copy. Or you can select individual pages that you want and you can select make a copy. All my best, Melissa

Speech Homework: Helpful Tool or Waste of Paper?
During my student teaching I saw my mentor pass out a worksheet to each student at the end of each session. When I visited with my grad school friends they told me theirs did the same. So, naturally we all passed out those skill specific worksheets at the end of each session. My first year working in my school I was so excited! I had binders of worksheets labeled, sorted, and ready to go. I was couldn’t wait to pass them out and see my students’ progress soar! Then reality set in. I soon realized that only a small handful of students ever turned in the homework, that is of course if they didn’t lose it.
So, I pose the question: Is speech homework helpful or a just a waste of paper? Let’s take a look at the pros and cons.
– Helps students practice and reinforce skills from therapy.
– Encourage family involvement in speech therapy.
– Helps students make faster, more steady progress of targeted skills.
– If homework doesn’t get done or is lost then no practice or reinforcement of skills is had.
– Paper ($) and time are needed in preparing materials for homework.
For me, the pros out weigh the cons. But, that doesn’t erase the frustrations that occur when speech homework consistently isn’t completed. After years of this I come to a conclusion: The best I can do is give them the opportunity. It took me some time to get there though, this light bulb did not turn on over night! I had to understand and accept that there will be reasons why speech homework isn’t completed: after school activities, too much homework already, family events, they lost it, etc. So, I decided the best thing I could do for my students was to give them the opportunity to practice their skills and if it didn’t get done, it didn’t get done.
I have gone through lots and lots and lots of different homework sheets and systems. Here are some of my favorites that have worked well for me and hopefully for you…if you want.
1. Speech and Language Homework for a Year
This has been my favorite tool to use! This homework bundle is so comprehensive it’s crazy. Each week, for 10 months ( a school year ) there is a homework sheet. Each sheet has 3 different levels so I am able to find something for all kids. I hand had out these sheets to my students at their first or only session of the week. They have until the following week to turn get the activities done ( which take about 3 minutes ). Even if they don’t target my kid’s goals exactly, it is still addressing their language growth. She also has a Social Language Homework for a Year.
2. Summer Homework Packet
This is a great packet from Natalie Snyders with summer activities to keep those language skills strong! She also has packs for all the months of the school year and articulation too!
3. Speech and Language Therapy Summer Homework Program
This is another great packet from Sublime Speech to help prevent regression during the summer. It is set up like a calendar so it is super easy for families to follow and doesn’t take up much their day.
These are just some things I have found. I quick search on TpT will turn up lots more, so take a look and see if there is something out there that may fit your needs.
Now after all this talk about speech homework I am curious. Where do you stand on it?

I give homework, but only once/week. I give them a duotang folder (the kind with 3 brads in it) that is provided by the school, and I put a note in it that that is the only folder I’ll give them. They get the folder at the end of the week and then should bring it back with a parent’s signature the next time I see them. I’ve never had much of a problem with getting the majority of them back…bribery always helps!
I too have used the folder idea, but this year I came up with a ring. The teacher practices with the student at the end of reading group. I place target words on a card at various levels and teachers take their time at the end of group and run through about 10 words. If anyone else has a ring system, please post.
I also give homework, but as a monthly calendar to my elementary kiddos. I encourage completion of the calendar, but the students are not penalized if they don’t bring it back. For those that do, I pass out a small reward. Even if it is only one activity attempted, I am happy. I guess the saying, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained” applies here!
Thanks for the love! I also keep track of when I assign it and if they return it. I can use it to tell parents that they need the home practice too!
I give homework once a month, along with a word list containing their speech sounds. I use Speech Activities by Miss Chelsea’s free homework calenders on TPT (SO CUTE!!): https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/January-2015-Articulation-Homework-1615457
I send a note home explaining the importance of homework to the parents and tell them to initial on the days they did the various activities with their child and send it back in to school. When a student brings me their calenders with parent signatures for the week they get an extra sticker on their behavior chart toward prize box. Even though it’s not behavior related it gets them really motivated because they want the prize box 24/7!! Works for me! 🙂
I agree with you, Maureen! I think it is important to provide that opportunity.
I still give homework for students in kindergarten through grade 5. The decision to give homework to 6-8 is done on a more individualized basis. Some of my middle school students feel terribly overwhelmed by their homework already and I don’t want to add to that burden. Others love it and have no problem completing it. I agree, homework is important and I remember this quote from one of my professors in 1982, “Homework is good.” I think that just about sums it up 🙂
Hi Maureen, Love this post, and it is something I am always questioning in my practice. I like to give my kids a weekly “mission” which is not paper-based, but embedded into their week. It might be just a single word to use every time they ask for something, or five repetitions every time they brush their teeth. I find these are achievable, easy and ‘real-life.’ I only tend to give paper-based or structured homework if I have a really eager family, otherwise I know I am just wasting paper. Another great tool that I use is an Australian website called elr.com.au – you can try a demo – you can register and then give kids guest access to play speech games at home – I find these actually get done, unlike other homework. Thanks for the food for thought! Alex.
I looked at some data on this a few years back as part of my personal goal. For my students, for those that consistently completed homework, 100% met their benchmark goals. For those who didn’t consistently complete homework, only 60% met their benchmark goals. I include this data in my beginning of the year letter.
That is really interesting! Thank you for sharing.
