What’s included in Hawaiian Airlines Main Cabin Basic fare?

Is hawaiian airlines main cabin basic worth it, main cabin basic deals during peak times, basic economy across u.s. airlines, main cabin basic on hawaiian airlines, recapped.

If you want to get to Honolulu from Los Angeles, Long Beach or San Jose and you’re looking to save money, good news: Hawaiian Airlines has just rolled out a low-priced option that puts a tropical vacation in easier reach for a lot of travelers.

The Hawaiian Airlines Main Cabin Basic fare will be available on select departures from the three California cities listed above for travel beginning Oct. 21. The move puts Hawaiian Airlines in sync with a major carriers who have been rolling out these lower-priced "basic economy"-style options, including United, American and Delta.

These lower fares vary slightly by airline, but the one thing they have in common is that they all exclude free advanced seat selection. Passengers traveling on Hawaiian Airlines Main Cabin Basic fares can select their seats at check-in or receive their assignment at the gate. That’s unfortunate, because sometimes by the time you’re checking in, there are nothing but middle seats left.

There are other downsides, too. For example, if you decide later that you want to upgrade to an "extra comfort" seat or to first class, you can’t. Nor can you change your flight or earn Hawaiian miles.

In return for accepting all these disadvantages, you get a reduced fare. And the reduction is significant. For example, we found a round-trip flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu in November for $418 in Hawaiian’s Main Cabin. That same flight in Main Cabin Basic costs just $358. That’s $60 less per ticket, or 14% off the regular economy fare.

If you collect Hawaiian Miles, this discount probably isn’t as valuable to you.

Consider that you’d normally earn about 5,000 Hawaiian miles on a round-trip flight between Los Angeles and Honolulu. HawaiianMiles are valued at around 1.2 cents each. So those $60 in fare savings are costing you about $60 worth of miles.

Don’t expect to find Main Cabin Basic deals at peak times. A recent search for travel during Christmas week showed no Main Cabin Basic option for Los Angeles to Honolulu. Main Cabin fares start around $618 round-trip at that time.

In NerdWallet's annual analysis of the best airlines, we compared the basic economy experience across the major U.S. airlines currently offering a basic economy fare.

We looked at restrictions and allowances, including baggage, miles earning and trip modification policies. Here's how they stacked up:

Hawaiian’s new low-fare product is a little more generous with perks than some of its competitors. Hawaiian Airlines is following American and Delta in allowing basic fare passengers a free carry-on bag on all routes, but Main Cabin Basic travelers on Hawaiian will also enjoy one of the rarest perks in domestic travel: a free hot meal.

If you’re planning a trip to Hawaii and are willing to give up the ability to choose your seat in exchange for a cheaper fare, Hawaiian Airlines’ Main Cabin Basic fares are worth looking into.

How to upgrade your seat on Hawaiian Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines Airbus A330 will be offering free Starlink internet access

A vacation to Hawaii can be the ultimate dream trip. Whether you choose Maui, Kauai or Waikiki, the beaches and mountains that await have the ability to take your breath away.

The remote location of Hawaii means you'll have a long flight to get to paradise regardless of where you start your journey. Hawaiian Airlines has been flying from Hawaii to destinations worldwide for over 80 years and offers a variety of ways to get to Hawaii with a bit more comfort.

Hawaiian Airlines has true lie-flat seats on some routes and offers seats with extra legroom in its economy class cabin. Hawaiian also offers a product similar to domestic U.S. first class on some intra-Hawaii flights.

As you can see, there are many upgraded seating options on Hawaiian Airlines flights. Here's what you need to know about getting an upgrade when flying Hawaiian Airlines.

Snag a free Hawaiian upgrade with elite status

seat assignment hawaiian airlines

If you hold elite status in the HawaiianMiles program , you may find yourself on the Hawaiian upgrade list. Pualani Gold and Platinum members have limited access to free upgrades to extra comfort, business-class and first-class seats.

For "neighbor island" flights or intra-island Hawaii flights, Pualani Gold and Platinum members get free upgrades to extra comfort seats (Hawaiian's premium economy product on its Airbus A330, A321neo and Boeing 717 aircraft) 24 hours before departure.

Pualani Platinum members also get free upgrades to first-class seats 24 hours before check in, while Pualani Gold members can purchase an upgrade for a 50% discount if available 24 hours before departure.

Hawaiian treats flights to the rest of North America and other international destinations differently. Pualani Gold and Platinum members get access to extra comfort seating at boarding. Pualani Platinum members earn certificates redeemable for upgrades to first and business class.

Each certificate is valid for an upgrade to first or business class on Hawaiian-operated flights of 3,500 miles or less. Still, members can redeem multiple certificates for flights longer than 3,500 miles.

Pualani Platinum members earn two certificates when they qualify for Platinum status each year, six additional certificates if they fly 75,000 miles in a calendar year and an additional certificate for every 10,000 miles flown beyond 75,000 in a year.

Pay for a Hawaiian upgrade

seat assignment hawaiian airlines

Hawaiian Airlines employs a "Bid Up" system where eligible travelers can bid to upgrade to first or business class on a Hawaiian Airlines flight. Passengers traveling in main cabin basic — Hawaiian's version of basic economy — are ineligible for the Bid Up system.

Eligible passengers can enter their confirmation number into the Bid Up page on Hawaiian's website to make a bid. You can enter a different bid for each segment, but you'll need to bid for all passengers on your itinerary. If you're comfortable splitting up your party and only upgrading some travelers on your itinerary, you'll need separate reservations. Hawaiian Airlines will notify you between 48 and 24 hours before departure if you've been cleared off the Hawaiian upgrade list to a first or business class seat.

Meanwhile, if you want to secure an upgrade to extra comfort or preferred seats, you can pay to reserve these seats. The cost will be between $5 and $49 for "neighbor island" flights and between $9 and $399 for other flights.

The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® doesn't offer any discounts or benefits related to Hawaiian upgrades. But you can still utilize many other credit card travel credits to cover upgrade fees.

For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve offers a $300 annual travel credit , and The Platinum Card® from American Express offers an airline fee credit up to $200 per calendar year in statement credits (although you'd need to enroll and select Hawaiian Airlines as your airline of choice before making your purchase).

The information for the Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Mastercard has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Redeem miles for a Hawaiian upgrade

seat assignment hawaiian airlines

HawaiianMiles members can also redeem miles for first or business class upgrades based on availability.

For "neighbor island" Hawaiian flights, the range of miles required to upgrade to first class is between 7,500 and 15,000. Meanwhile, the cost to upgrade Hawaiian flights to North America or other international destinations will range between 25,000 and 90,000 miles depending on the destination.

Pualani Platinum and Gold members, as well as HawaiianMiles credit card holders, may see discounted upgrade offers for certain flights in their accounts. Unfortunately, you can't redeem miles to upgrade to Hawaiian's preferred or extra comfort seats.

Bottom line

There are several ways to score an upgrade to Hawaiian first class. Intra-island flights are shorter, so upgrading may not be worth the price (in cash or miles). However, upgrading on longer flights may provide excellent value.

If you're a Hawaii resident or travel there frequently, elite status in the HawaiianMiles program may score you some free upgrades to Hawaiian first class or business class. And Hawaiian is one of the few airlines flying to and from the mainland U.S. that employs a bidding system for upgrades.

Child Restraint Systems (Car Seats)

Your child’s safety is very important to us. That’s why we recommend purchasing a seat for children, under the age of two , as well as using an approved front-facing or rear-facing child restraint system in-flight.

All safety seats used in-flight must meet the following requirements:

Safety seats that do not have a label stating certification for use in aircraft, or seats manufactured before January 1, 1981, are not acceptable for use in-flight.

Child booster seats or other types of child restraints, regardless of stamp/seals of approval the devices carry, may not be used during take-off, landing and surface movements. For additional details on approved child restraint systems, visit Additional Notes .

Rear-facing Child Restraint System

Rear-facing child restraint systems will be allowed provide you've:

  • Purchased a seat for your child
  • Notify an aiport agent upon arrival at the airport that you'll be using a rear-facing child restraint system

Note: your child’s restraint system will not be counted as a carry-on item when a seat has been purchased for your child.

Traveling today and forgot to let us know in advance?

Don’t stress, just be sure to notify a Hawaiian Airlines airport customer service agent at check-in or at the gate prior to boarding. For more information regarding car seats as a carry-on baggage click here .

Will your Car Seat fit on our Aircraft?

In order to help our guests determine whether their CRS (Child Restraint System or car seat) fits properly on the aircraft in which they expect to travel, the following chart provides the width of the narrowest and widest passenger seats (in inches) for each of our aircraft.

While we will try our best to utilize the originally scheduled aircraft type for your journey, operational circumstances may result in an aircraft swap to an aircraft with different seat dimensions.

If you have further questions, please call Hawaiian Airlines Reservations .

Seat Dimensions

Seat dimensions represent the width of the distance from the inside of one armrest across the seat to the inside of the opposing armrest.

*Children using child restraint systems are not permitted to sit in the Exit row.

Seat Restrictions

For the safety of your child and all guests, Child Restraint Systems (CRS) are not permitted in the following seats and rows:

  • Aisle seats on the A321 and B717 aircraft
  • Aisle seats for the A330 and B787 aircraft are prohibited unless the child's traveling party occupies all seats in that row. EXAMPLE: A330: A CRS may be accepted in seat 23 C/G if the traveling party occupies the entire row 23, all seats CDEG. B787: A CRS may be accepted in seat 23 D/F if the traveling party occupies the entire row 23, all seats DEF.
  • Rows immediately in front of or behind an exit.
  • Row 4 on our B717 aircraft.
  • First/Business Class on the 787 aircraft.
  • Any seat that blocks aisle access from individuals, not in your traveling party.

This restriction is enforced to prevent the safety seat from impeding a possible aircraft evacuation.

Hawaiian Airlines reserves the right to change seating assignments in order to ensure compliance with federal regulations.

Additional Notes

Backless booster type seats, safety belts, belly belts, harness type and vest type devices are not allowed during taxiing, takeoff, and landing. Exception: CARES Harness.

Cares is designed specifically for aviation use for children ages 1 and older, who weigh between 22-44 pounds. Cares is approved by the FAA as an alternative to a car seat for aircraft transportation and may be used during all phases of flight.

Already planning next vacation and I was so surprised to find that even if I book 8 months out... the available seats on Hawaiian Airlines begin with row 18 (over the wing). Does anyone know why rows 11-17 are not offered? Seems odd to me.

Hope you are all having a great weekend!!!!

' class=

Are those perhaps a different fare bucket--e.g. Coach Plus, Premium this or that?

I thought of that also, swmarket, but they were not offered at any price I could see. All Hawaiian shows on their seat maps is available and unavailable. I'd likely pay for an upgraded seat, if available....

I know row 11-14 are economy plus. Well worth the extra money.

You might try clearing your cookies and try a booking in Coach Plus or whatever they call it.

Mahalo.... everyone

We were definitely able to book row 13 (window and aisle) on the way back to JFK from HNL, regular fare seats, flying on an Airbus 330. It is very possible that the lower rows are just reserved already, as they usually go first. FWIW I actually hated that section because every seat was full and it was very busy due to the galley and lavatory right there. I preferred sitting a few rows behind the wings where we sat on the way out. because it was less full, much quieter, and not as hot. We wanted to try them both to see which we preferred.

The Art Of Choosing Seats On Flights To Hawaii

Choosing the best seats on a long flight to Hawaii can be an ordeal. That is if you pay a high enough fare and choose an airline that offers advance seat selection. It’s an important part of the airline ticketing process and choosing wisely can determine in part how much you enjoy your 5+ hour flight to Hawaii.

It is always great to travel with extra legroom or get upgraded using points or cash into premium economy or business class, but that isn’t always possible either due to affordability or availability. As we mentioned, premium seats to Hawaii are in far greater demand than ever before, and people stand ready to fork over the extra money in order to be comfortable. So the only option may be to select the best economy seats available, especially for such a long duration.

Airlines, including Hawaiian, are now charging extra for some regular economy seats.

Earlier this week we wrote Hawaiian Adds $19-23 Fee for Many Economy Seats . Airlines other than Southwest let you pick your seat. But there can be an extra charge for seat assignments, especially on the cheapest tickets and for those seats found near the front, plus aisle or window seats. But when the alternative is sitting in the middle, or not being seated together with your travel companions at all, that can be a real bummer when starting out on your Hawaii vacation.

Everyone has their own take on what’s best.

Seats that are in one class are the same as others, in terms of their physical dimensions. But in other ways, they may not be equal, as experienced travelers will definitely attest to.

One thing to decide on is whether you want an aisle seat or window seat, or whether, when two are traveling together, will one of you accept a middle seat? Also, make note of the distance from restrooms in terms of potential convenience as well as annoyance.

Do you prefer seating near the front of the plane?

We definitely both do. We like not seeing all the other people on the plane. It doesn’t really make sense, but somehow it feels less claustrophobic. Also, it’s great to be among the first to get off the plane on arrival in Hawaii. When you have a connection en route, sitting forward helps reduce the concern about a missed flight.

Will you be able to easily stow your carry-ons?

That’s a real concern. And it isn’t always easy to figure out since it involves both where you’re sitting and the airline’s boarding plan. Sometimes, too, overhead bins near bulkheads will be used by flight attendants. Generally, sitting near the back gives you more access to overhead storage, depending on when you board.

Two-across economy seating is becoming somewhat of a rarity.

Airlines flying to Hawaii have moved to more single-aisle, narrow-body aircraft for the majority of their flights. These are almost exclusive 3-across seating. Check when booking to see if some flights might still be on wide-body aircraft. Those are offered depending on route and flight by American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and United Airlines. Both Alaska Airlines and Southwest Airlines only fly narrow-body aircraft to Hawaii.

Aisle and window seats are now monetized.

The airlines know that we hate middle seats and they are in the process of fully monetizing window and aisle seating whenever possible. Even on aircraft with two-abreast seating, airlines will try to charge extra for those sections to the degree they can.

This old trick no longer works.

In a plane with three-across seating, an old trick was to reserve in a row that was open, even better towards the rear, and then select window and aisle seats, leaving the middle seat open. When the plane was not full, that often provided an opportunity for two people to share three seats. But airlines filling nearly every seat, that is not likely to happen any longer.

But this old trick still does work.

When traveling with a companion and neither of you is willing to sit in a middle seat, many will opt to select adjacent aisle seats. We have done that ourselves. We had a comment on that practice from Ted, who said, “An annoying pattern I’ve noticed is that before when 2 people traveled they usually took aisle/middle or window/middle seats. What’s happening now is each person taking aisle seats across each other.”

And so does this one.

Check on your reservation frequently from the time of booking until your flights. In today’s rapidly changing travel world, your flight could have been changed, the aircraft type might not be the same, or other seats may have become available. Whatever may have happened, do check to be sure everything is as you expect.

How to check for the best seats on your flight to Hawaii.

Some seat locations simply are more comfortable than others. Depending on the aircraft, seats can include more or less legroom, and some seats in front of exit rows may not even recline. There are other issues too, such as fixed armrests between seats. Two websites that we use to check seating on all aircraft are Seat Guru and Seat Maestro. We like checking both to see if they yield the same results. You’ll enter the date and flight in most cases or may need to identify the specific aircraft type assigned for your flight. Both websites show you a depiction of the seat map, with indications of which seats are better and why, as well as which ones you should avoid. You can also check the seat width and the seat pitch using these websites, which is especially helpful if, like editor Rob, you happen to be 6′ 4″.

Choose your seats as soon as possible.

That gives you the best selection of seats to choose from. Ideally, that happens in the same process as purchasing flights. If that isn’t possible, and you have to obtain seats 24 hours before departure, set an alarm so you’re there at the exact moment you can check in and not one minute later.

Twenty-four hours before travel is also the ideal time to change seats if you had reserved ones that aren’t your favorite, or are hoping for an upgrade. When that doesn’t work either, the last choice is to arrive at the airport early to see what is possible.

What are your airline seat tips and tricks?

Well I am on a A430 neo and don’t think there is an avenue to choose a best seat. They are all small seats for a 6 foot woman, unless you can afford the big upgrades.

The Guide to Hawaiian Airlines Seat Selection

' src=

Each airline handles seating a bit differently these days, and trying to figure out which seats cost money, and which are free, can be confusing.

If you’re looking at traveling with Hawaiian Airlines, it’s a good idea to figure out the airline’s seating policies in advance so you can budget appropriately. If you’re wondering, “Does Hawaiian Airlines charge for seat selection?” here’s all the information you need to help ensure you get your favorite seat on Hawaiian Airlines.

How Hawaiian Airlines seat selection works

Whether you’re able to choose your seat on Hawaiian Airlines depends on what type of ticket you purchase.

If you’re booking a domestic flight on Hawaiian Airlines, you’ll see options for Main Cabin Basic, Main Cabin and first class. On Hawaiian Airlines international flights, there are just two options: Main Cabin and business class.

When it comes to seat selection, all fare types allow you to choose or upgrade your seat — except for Main Cabin Basic.

Let’s look at how much seats cost on Hawaiian Airlines and how to go about choosing the seat you want.

Hawaiian seat selection fees

According to an analysis of airline fees by NerdWallet, Hawaiian Airlines is tied with Alaska Airlines for charging the smallest seat selection fee, while budget airlines Frontier and Spirit charge the most. Southwest wasn’t ranked because it doesn’t assign seats .

How to select seats on Hawaiian Airlines flights

The first step in selecting your seats on a Hawaiian Airlines flight is knowing which types of tickets allow you to choose one yourself. Main Cabin Basic, the least expensive fare, doesn’t allow you to pick a seat, and instead assigns you one at check-in.

However, if you book a Main Cabin fare on Hawaiian Airlines, you can choose your seat for no extra charge — though there are limitations on which seats are available. While regular Main Cabin seats are free to select, you’ll pay extra if you’d like a preferred or Extra Comfort seat.

Let’s go over each fare type and look into how seat selection works for each one.

Main Cabin Basic

If you want to save money on Hawaiian Airlines, you may want to look into a Main Cabin Basic fare.

On a sample round-trip flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu, Main Cabin Basic tickets were $80 cheaper than Main Cabin fares. For a family of four, that could equal a $320 savings on your Hawaii vacation.

However, those savings come with a caveat: Your family may not get to sit together , because with Main Cabin Basic on Hawaiian Airlines you can’t pick your seat. So there’s a chance your family will end up in separate rows or different parts of the plane.

If, after you book, you decide you want to splurge on extra legroom seats, you’re out of luck. Basic economy seats are not eligible for upgrades, even paid upgrades. Plus you’ll be among the last to board the plane, when overhead bin space is getting scarce, and you can’t change or cancel your tickets for a refund.

Regular Main Cabin seats

While booking your Main Cabin ticket on Hawaiian Airlines’ website, you’ll be directed to a seat selection page. In the example below, any of the seats colored purple on the chart that don’t have a price on them are available to you at no extra charge. These regular seats in Main Cabin have the standard amount of legroom and are usually toward the back of the plane, but if you book early enough, you’ll find plenty of aisle and window seats to choose from.

seat assignment hawaiian airlines

Want to see available seats before you book? Just click “View seats” in the flight results page to pull up a chart like this. But be warned that the seats you’re eyeing could get snapped up by another traveler before you lock them in. Use the “View seats” chart as a general reference and remember those spots aren’t yours until you pay for your flight.

Main Cabin preferred seats

Preferred seats, in Hawaiian Airlines lingo, are also in the Main Cabin and offer the same legroom as regular Main Cabin seats. The only difference is that they’re in more desirable locations on the plane — and they come with an extra charge. On the Hawaiian Airlines seating chart above, preferred seats are also purple, but you’ll see a dollar amount on them, like the $33 seats near the front of the plane.

To choose a preferred seat, just click the seat you want during booking, and you’ll be asked to confirm the add-on charge when you pay for your ticket.

Extra Comfort seats

Like a lot of legroom? Then Extra Comfort seats in Hawaiian Airlines’ Main Cabin may be worth the extra cost.

Depending on the aircraft, these seats often come with five more inches of space to stretch out in than regular Main Cabin and even preferred seats. Emergency exit row and bulkhead seats are almost always priced as Extra Comfort seats, and they often have even more legroom than other seats in this class.

However, that extra legroom can be pricey. Depending on the route, aircraft and demand, Extra Comfort seats on Hawaiian can range from $59 one-way from the West Coast to Hawaii up to $250 per seat on a peak season flight from New York-John F. Kennedy to the islands. For a family of four traveling from the East Coast, Extra Comfort seats could add up to $2,000 to the cost of your vacation.

First and business class seats

The most luxurious seats on the plane are in first class on Hawaiian Airlines domestic flights and business class on international routes.

Passengers in these premium cabins can enjoy fully lie-flat seats on most, but not all, Hawaiian Airlines aircraft. For example, flying from Ontario, California, to Honolulu on an Airbus 321 plane, first class passengers instead get a spacious recliner seat that does not lie flat.

If you purchase a first or business class seat, there are no add-ons or upgrades. For example, as you can see below, all the seats in the first class cabin are free for you to select.

seat assignment hawaiian airlines

Hawaiian Airlines seats for elite members

Pualani elite members of Hawaiian Airlines’ loyalty program, HawaiianMiles, receive a variety of perks when flying. One of them is the ability to select Extra Comfort seats for free, when space is available. This benefit is available for both Pualani Gold and Pualani Platinum elite members.

Hawaiian Airlines plane seating chart

We recommend checking the Hawaiian Airlines’ seating chart for your flight before you purchase your airfare. Even if you’re buying your ticket through a third-party travel agency or buying a ticket that doesn’t let you choose your seat, a glimpse at the chart can give you an idea of how packed your flight will be and what seats may be available to you.

To see the chart for a specific flight, do a flight search on Hawaiian’s website, then click the “View seats” link under the flight you’re considering. There’s no guarantee that the seats open on the chart will be open to you when you book or board, but you’ll still get a rough idea of what to expect on your trip.

Hawaiian Airlines seat selection recapped

When you’re flying to paradise, any seat is a good seat — but some are definitely better than others.

Decide whether you’re willing to be assigned a middle seat at the back of the plane to save money or, alternatively, whether and how much you want to splurge to get to Hawaii more comfortably.

If you decide to choose a Main Cabin seat, you can also take advantage of upgrades to preferred or Extra Comfort seats for an extra fee. Just remember to factor that cost into each leg of your trip to get the full picture of how much your trip will cost.

Car seats that are airline approved

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

If you’re a parent and fly with your family, you know that air travel with kids is not always easy, especially when it involves lugging a car seat.

Car seats can be big, bulky and heavy. However, they’re also necessary at times to ensure a safe trip. In addition to the safety issues, some little kids sleep better on a plane when they are cozy in their car seats at 36,000 feet.

You also probably know that children under age 2 can fly for free as a lap child on a paid adult ticket. Once that child turns 2, though, your days of flying a child for free are over.

Though they may be too old to fly for free, they’re still too young to sit in a regular airplane seat without an approved car seat, regulated by both the Federal Aviation Administration and airlines , which allow you to check car seats (and strollers) for free without counting against your baggage allowance.

This guide details carrier car seat policies. Some car seats may not be permitted onboard due to cabin class, seat width, placement or seat direction/angle.

To help traveling parents navigate these rules, refer to this guide to know what is and isn’t allowed regarding car seats and bassinets on 23 major airlines.

Domestic airlines policies

While the FAA does not require car seats, they restrict what type of car seats you can use on a plane. It suggests using a Child Aviation Restraint System, which includes typical car seats or Aviation Child Safety Devices (ACSD), specifically the AmSafe CARES Restraint , as an alternative to a car seat.

ACSDs are designed for children weighing between 22 and 44 pounds and under 40 inches tall.

Vest and harness-type child restraint devices other than the FAA-approved CARES restraint device are generally prohibited onboard, and booster seat policies vary.

To use your car seat onboard, it must have two labels:

  • “This restraint system conforms to all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards.”
  • “This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft.”

In addition to those manufactured in the U.S., these airlines will accept car seats approved by foreign governments or the United Nations.

“If your seat has been approved for aircraft use, there will be a sticker (either on the back, bottom or side of the seat, depending on the size of the label) that says ‘This restraint has been certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft’ in red lettering,” Graco says on its website . “However, even though the seat is FAA approved when used according to the manufacturer’s instructions, we recommend calling the airline you are traveling with ahead of time as each airline has its own policies.”

This is because some of the bases on infant car seats do not meet FAA standards or individual airline policies.

“The bases that are not approved will have a clearly marked sticker on the base,” according to Graco. “Even if the base is not cleared for use, most of these infant car seats can still be installed shell only, please refer to the instruction manual for specific information about your infant car seat.”

Based on the policies outlined below, most car seats will fit in the smallest airplane seat if they measure 16.3 inches or less. However, certain cabins may accommodate wider passenger seats and, thus, car seats.

Overall, most airlines prohibit child-restraint systems in aisle seats, emergency exit row seats and on either side of an exit row, with window seats preferred, with some exceptions. Additionally, children under the age of 2 cannot sit in a seat equipped with an airbag seat belt per federal regulations.

Airlines also specify other restrictions for child safety seats, detailed below by U.S. carriers.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines prohibits child-restraint systems in A seats in rows 1 through 4 on flights on E-175 planes.

“The window seat is the best location for a child restraint system, although it may be placed in the middle seat if the window seat is vacant or if the restraint system does not block access to the aisle,” the airline says. “If you are uncertain, the flight attendant can assist in determining if the middle seat is acceptable.”

Alaska also provides a chart to help flyers determine whether a specific car seat will fit in specific aircraft.

Alaska Airlines does not offer bassinets on any of its flights.

For more info, see Alaska’s traveling with infants and children policy .

American Airlines

American Airlines says most safety seats approved for use in motor vehicles are also acceptable onboard, as long as it has a solid back and seat and restraint straps to securely hold the child.

Child-restraint systems are not allowed in first or business class on select planes, specifically first class in Airbus 321-T and business class on Boeing 777-200, Boeing 777-300, Boeing 787-800 and Boeing 787-900.

To use an infant bassinet, your child must be under 2 years old and 20 pounds. Bassinets are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the gate for economy travel only on 767-300, 777-200, 777-300 and 787 aircraft.

For more info, see American’s traveling with children policy .

Delta Air Lines

Beyond the usual seat restrictions for safety seats, Delta also tells passengers with car seats to avoid bulkhead seats when the safety seat is a combination car seat and stroller, plus Delta One lie-flat seats on A330-200, A330-300, Boeing 777, 767 or 747 aircraft.

Delta offers onboard baby bassinets on some international flights for babies weighing up to 20 pounds and up to 26 inches long.

Onboard bassinets, also known as SkyCots, are free for passengers in select seats on equipped aircraft for some international flights and can be requested by contacting Reservations before arriving at the airport and then speaking with the gate agent at the boarding gate, but cannot be guaranteed.

For more info, see Delta’s infant air travel policy .

Frontier Airlines

Like the non-low-cost carriers, Frontier seat width varies based on aircraft, with minimum seat width ranging from 16.5 inches to 17.4 inches for the A—321 and A—319/A—320, respectively.

Booster seats are allowed onboard Frontier flights but may not be used during takeoff and landing.

Frontier Airlines does not offer bassinets on any of its flights.

For more info, see their traveling with children or pets policy .

Hawaiian Airlines

Like some of the other airlines on this list, Hawaiian Airlines provides travelers with a handy chart with seat width and configuration on aircraft to determine whether your car seat meets the narrowest and widest passenger seats on board.

Contact Hawaiian Airlines Reservations in advance if you plan to use a rear-facing car seat.

Bassinets are available on most Hawaiian Airlines’ international flights. To reserve a bassinet, the accompanying adult must purchase a bassinet-compatible Extra Comfort seat in Row 14 (14 AB, CD or EG, HJ).

If you prefer not to purchase an Extra Comfort seat, you may see an airport customer service agent at check-in for bassinet availability. If available, Hawaiian Airlines will accept up to two requests per flight. Confirmed bassinets will be assigned during the boarding process. Priority will be given to the customer with the earliest check-in time as the bassinets are not guaranteed.

To use a bassinet, your child must be under the age of 2 and weigh under 20 pounds. The bassinet is 32 inches long, 14.5 inches wide and 7 inches tall.

For more info, see Hawaiian’s traveling with a child policy.

JetBlue Airways

In addition to providing a seat dimension chart, JetBlue does not require infant or children travelers to have a car seat “as long as they can sit upright unassisted.”

JetBlue does not offer bassinets on any of its flights.

For more, see their traveling with kids policy .

Southwest Airlines

Unlike the other carriers, Southwest allows car seats in middle seats, assuming it does not impede the window seat passenger’s path to the aisle.

While Southwest recommends travelers less than 20 pounds face the back of the plane and those between 20 and 40 pounds face forward, “parents have ultimate discretion.”

Southwest does not offer bassinets on any of its flights.

For more info, read Southwest’s traveling with little ones policy .

Spirit Airlines

Diverging from the other airlines in this guide, Spirit Airlines does not prohibit car seats in aisle seats, according to its website.

Though Frontier outlines seat dimensions, it promises to “do our best to reseat you to an open seat (not including our Big Front Seats) if the car seat is too large for a regular seat.”

Rear-facing child restraint systems may not fit on Frontier aircraft if taller than 25 inches.

For more info, read Frontier’s FAQ online.

United Airlines

Aligning with FAA policy, United allows car seats made after 1985 with a certification sticker onboard, in window seats only, while prohibiting booster seats and harnesses.

United has a limited number of complimentary bassinets for use on international aircraft only, large enough to hold an infant weighing less than 22 pounds.

Bassinets are available for customers traveling international segments in Polaris business class on select 757, 767, 777 and 787 aircraft and in United Economy on 757, 767, 777 and 787 aircraft.

Customers can request a bassinet by calling the United Customer Contact Center within the United States or the appropriate Worldwide Contact Center . Bassinet availability is limited, and these arrangements are not guaranteed, so request a bassinet early.

For more info, see United’s traveling with children policy .

International airline car seat policies

Car seats certified for use in motor vehicles and airplanes are permitted onboard Aeromexico aircraft in the window or middle seat.

A limited number of complimentary cribs are available upon request and are subject to availability for passengers weighing less than 24 pounds. Availability is confirmed during the check-in process, crib availability will be confirmed, and you must purchase an AM Plus seat to accompany it.

For more info, see Aeromexico’s information for passengers traveling with infants .

Air France restricts car seats for passengers under 2 to ones smaller than 17 inches wide, excluding first-row economy, which are smaller (16 inches).

During takeoff and landing, the car seat can face the back of the aircraft, but the car seat must otherwise face the front of the aircraft so the seat in front can be reclined.

Car seats are not allowed on certain Boeing 777 aircraft and all Boeing 787 aircraft or the La Premiere cabin on all types of aircraft, in which you must carry your child on your lap.

Air France passengers may request a bassinet on long-haul flights in business, premium economy and economy cabins, subject to availability, for travelers weighing less than 22 pounds and measuring less than 27 inches.

For more info, read Air France’s families and children policy .

Air New Zealand

Passengers can use forward- or rear-facing car seats to restrain children up to 7 years old as long as the seat is designed for the child’s weight, equipped with a built-in restraint system, not wider than 17 inches nor higher than 19 inches for rear-facing or 25.5 inches for forward-facing.

Car seats should also display one of the manufacturing standards marks showing that it is an approved car seat that is outlined on the Air New Zealand website.

Car seats cannot be used in Business Premier lie-flat seats on all 777 aircraft.

On international flights, Boeing 777-200, 777-300, and 787-9 aircraft may offer seats with bassinets for infants up to 8 months old and 26 pounds and include sheets, a pillow and blankets. When booking a bassinet online, select a seat with a bassinet icon from the bassinet row. If you are traveling with an infant between 8 and 15 months who meets the aforementioned weight requirements, you may be able to secure a bassinet seat when you check in.

For more info, see Air New Zealand’s traveling with children policy .

British Airways

You can bring your own car seat on British Airways flights, subject to certain conditions, including that it be no wider than 18 inches to ensure it fits in the aircraft seat. The car seat frame must be either metal or plastic/polycarbonate material and ideally placedFl in the middle seat, among other conditions.

You can also reserve a child seat supplied by British Airways, suitable for babies weighing less than 27.5 pounds, available on all long-haul flights except on the London City Aiport (LCY) to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) service. These are also the only child seats that can be used in Club Suite.

Alternatively, if you have your own AmSafe Child Restraint System, you can use this on board in economy seats for infants aged one to four for all other cabins.

British Airways has specially designed carrycots on board that can be reserved during booking. The carrycot guidelines are the same as reserving a carrycot position if you use a car seat supplied by British Airways.

For more info, read the airline’s family travel policy .

Cathay Pacific

If you have travelers between the ages of 6 months and 3 years, you can bring your own car safety seat on board as long as they meet certain conditions, including both forward- and rear-facing, pending they don’t impact other passengers’ comfort.

ACARES harnesses can be used for children under three and less than one meter tall, weighing between 22 pounds and 44 pounds.

Cathay Pacific restricts safety seats on certain aircraft and cabins, outlined online.

Alternatively, Cathay Pacific offers its own child restraint seats for the same age group. A limited number of child restraint seats are available for passengers under 39 inches tall and 44 pounds.

Bassinets are available on all Cathay Pacific flights for passengers under 6 months old and under 26.5 pounds, excluding Cathay Dragon flights operated on Airbus A320 aircraft. You can ask for a baby bassinet when you make your reservation.

For more info, read the airline’s traveling with children policy .

Emirates provides a list of acceptable car seats for use by passengers online and says that travelers under 22 pounds can be either forward-facing or rear-facing but that those weighing more must be forward-facing. All car seats must be secured using the lap seat belt — not those that need to be secured by a three-point seat belt or shoulder harness.

You can request a baby bassinet in the “Passenger details” section when booking online or under “Manage your booking” or by phone .

Bassinets, which are subject to availability, measure approximately 29.5 by 13 by 8.8 inches and can hold babies weighing up to 24.2 pounds. These are designed for babies up to 2 years.

For more info, see Emirates’ frequently asked questions .

Children up to age 3 may use certain approved car seats in conjunction with an aircraft seat, with rear-facing seats restricted to infants from ages 0 to 6 months weighing less than 22 pounds and are only allowed in first or business class.

Bassinets on Etihad are specially designed carry-cots to help your baby sleep flat during the flight. If you’re traveling with an infant under 11 kilograms (about 24 pounds), you can request a baby bassinet when you book your flight. Supplies are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

For more info, see Etihad’s flying with children and infants policy .

EVA Air does not specify car seat restrictions beyond prohibition in its business-class cabins.

Baby bassinets are available aboard all EVA Air aircraft, designed for infants up to 8 months, free of charge. Height and weight limitations apply.

When you make your reservation, you must advise the airline of your baby’s date of birth, height and weight.

For more info, contact EVA Air’s reservations team or visit the airline’s website .

Japan Airlines

Japan Airlines provides two options for travelers — you can bring your own child seat or rent one through the airline.

To use your own seat on board, it must satisfy specific standards, including that it measures less than 42 centimeters wide. If you prefer to rent one, contact the reservations center at least 96 hours before departure. These seats are limited, so make sure to book early.

Bassinets on Japan Airlines are ideal for infants up to age 2, weighing up to 22 pounds and measuring 28 inches tall. The bassinets are 12 inches wide and 6 inches deep.

For more info, read the airline’s policy on using a child seat onboard aircraft .

If you book a seat for your child, KLM recommends bringing a car seat on board that fits between the armrests of the aircraft seat, which is 16.5 inches wide. During takeoff and landing, seats may be rear-facing but must be forward-facing at cruising altitude.

You will need to reserve the use of a car/child seat in advance with the airline.

For intercontinental KLM flights, you can reserve onboard carrycots via “My Trip” or by contacting the KLM Customer Contact Centre. These cots are suitable for babies shorter than 25.5 inches and weighing less than 22 pounds. Availability is not guaranteed.

For more info, read KLM’s policy on travel documents for kids.

Lufthansa encourages car seats for travelers up to age 7, though they’re entirely voluntary. A list of approved car seats on Lufthansa flights is available online.

For long-haul flights, the airline has special carrycots for babies under 24 pounds and under 26 inches. These are limited per flight and can be reserved up to 52 hours before departure.

Depending on your booking class, you may be charged an additional fee.

For more info, read Lufthansa’s child restraint systems policy .

Malaysia Airlines

Malaysia Airlines does not provide onboard car seat guidelines but does provide a select number of bassinets on board, depending on the aircraft. Passengers must reserve bassinets at least 24 hours before departure.

For more info, read the airline’s articles regarding children onboard .

Child car seats can be carried on board most Qantas and QantasLink flights and secured to an aircraft seat if approved by Qantas before travel. Qantas recommends contacting them at least seven days before travel, as preapproval must be finalized at least 24 hours before departure.

You’ll also need to show your device to our airport staff on the day of travel, including at check-in.

Qantas specifies guidelines for onboard car seats, including that they are only used on certain seats based on aircraft type. They also can’t be located in an aisle seat or in an exit row. If two responsible adults are traveling with a child and the allocated child car seat is in the center aisle, the two responsible adults must be seated on either side adjacent to the child car seat.

The airline provides bassinets onboard (approximately 28 inches long, 12 inches wide and 10 inches deep) for babies weighing under 24 pounds. These are limited, so make sure to request one during booking.

For more info, read Qantas’ child car seat polic y.

Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines allows the use of approved car-type child safety seats and FAA-approved child harnesses for children under age 3. Seats must be forward- or aft-facing while meeting specific size dimensions within each cabin class, outlined online.

The airline asks passengers to request a bassinet when they book an infant ticket, as only a limited number of bassinets are available on board, on a first-come, first-served basis. Each bassinet measures 30 inches by 11.7 inches by 6 inches supporting a maximum weight of 30 pounds.

For more info, read Singapore’ traveling with children policy.

You can take your child’s car seat on Swiss aircraft if your child is under 12 and weighs less than 59 pounds. For infants, you must book a separate passenger seat, and car seats must be certified for use in aircraft and must fit on a SWISS seat (17 by 17 inches).

Baby bassinets are available in all flight classes on long-haul flights and in business class on European routes for babies up to 8 months old and weighing a maximum of 11 kilograms (about 24 pounds). The number of cots is limited, so please be sure to contact the airline ahead of time.

For more info, read the airline’s on board with children policy.

Bottom line

Knowing the rules for your particular airline ahead of time can save you aggravation before and after stepping onto your plane.

For domestic travel, an FAA-approved car seat does not guarantee that it will fit on board, so be sure to double-check the seat dimensions of your specific aircraft before lugging your car seat to the airport.

Whether you’re flying abroad or within the U.S., airlines require that your car seats meet standards of international governing bodies, including the FAA, European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), European Safety Standard requirements and United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard.

As illustrated throughout this guide, most airlines specify height, weight and age restrictions for passengers using car seats.

Using a car seat for little passengers on board remains optional, but it must meet specified requirements if you do so.

Six Candidates Running For Three Seats On Moscow City Council

September 10, 2023 Evan Ellis News

Moscow voters will have several contested elections to decide this fall.

The candidate filing period for seats up for a vote this year in Idaho ended on Friday.

Six candidates are running for three Moscow City Council seats.  Incumbents Sandra Kelly and Drew Davis are running for re-election.  Bryce Blankenship, Joe Campbell, Evan Holmes and Nathan Tupper are also running for city council.  The top three vote getters in November will earn Moscow City Council seats.  Councilwoman Maureen Laflin is not running for re-election.

Elsewhere in Latah County the race for Juliaetta Mayor has three candidates.  Mayor Richard Groseclose is being challenged by Jeff Lohman and Eric McDowell.

No one filed for mayor and a council post in Onaway.
