शिक्षा पर निबंध (Education Essay in Hindi)

किसी भी व्यक्ति की प्रथम पाठशाला उसका परिवार होता है, और मां को पहली गुरु कहा गया है। शिक्षा वो अस्त्र है, जिसकी सहायता से बड़ी से बड़ी कठिनाइयों का सामना कर सकते है। वह शिक्षा ही होती है जिससे हमें सही-गलत का भेद पता चलता है। शिक्षा पर अनेकों निबंध लिखे गयें हैं, आगे भी लिखे जायेंगे। इसकी अहमियत का अंदाजा इसी बात से लगाया जा सकता है, एक वक़्त की रोटी ना मिले, चलेगा। किंतु शिक्षा जरुर मिलनी चाहिए। शिक्षा पाना प्रत्येक प्राणी का अधिकार है।

शिक्षा पर छोटे-बड़े निबंध (Short and Long Essay on Education in Hindi, Shiksha par Nibandh Hindi mein)

शिक्षा पर निबंध – निबंध 1 (250 – 300 शब्द).

शिक्षा शब्द संस्कृत के ‘शिक्ष’ धातु से लिया गया है, जिसका अर्थ होता है, सिखना या सिखाना। शिक्षा एक महत्वपूर्ण उपकरण है, जो हर किसी के जीवन में बहुत उपयोगी है। प्रारंभिक शिक्षा प्राप्त करना हर व्यक्ति का संवैधानिक अधिकार है।

शिक्षा की परिभाषाएं

गीता से अनुसार, “सा विद्या विमुक्ते”। अर्थात शिक्षा या विद्या वही है जो हमें बंधनों से मुक्त करे और हमारा हर पहलु पर विस्तार करे।

महात्मा गांधी के अनुसार, “सच्ची शिक्षा वह है जो बच्चों के आध्यात्मिक, बौद्धिक और शारीरिक पहलुओं को उभारती है और प्रेरित करती है। इस तरीके से हम सार के रूप में कह सकते हैं कि उनके मुताबिक़ शिक्षा का अर्थ सर्वांगीण विकास था।”

स्वामी विवेकानन्द के अनुसार, “शिक्षा व्यक्ति में अंतर्निहित पूर्णता की अभिव्यक्ति है।”

शिक्षा का उद्देश्य

शिक्षा का उद्देश्य केवल रोजगार प्राप्त करना नहीं है अपितु मानव का सर्वांगीण विकास है। शिक्षा एकमात्र ऐसा धन है जिसे एकबार अर्जित करने पर वह कभी खर्च नहीं होती बल्कि बढ़ती ही रहती है। शिक्षा हमें आदम से मनुष्य बनाती है, यह हमें अन्य जीवों से श्रेष्ठ बनाती है।

शिक्षा मनुष्यों को सशक्त बनाती है और उन्हें जीवन की चुनौतियों का कुशलता से सामना करने के लिए तैयार करती है। शिक्षा को सुलभ बनाने के लिए देश में शैक्षिक जागरूकता फैलाने की जरूरत है। सरकार को नई शिक्षा नीति को जल्द से जल्द सभी शिक्षण संस्थानों में लागू करने की आवश्यकता है।

शिक्षा का अधिकार – निबंध 2 (400 शब्द)

शिक्षा के माध्यम से ही हम अपने सपने पूरे कर सकते हैं। जीवन को नयी दशा और दिशा दे सकते हैं। बिना शिक्षा के हम कुछ भी मुकाम हासिल नहीं कर सकते। आजकल जीविकोपार्जन करना हर किसी की जरुरत है, जिसके लिए आपका शिक्षित होना अत्यंत आवश्यक है। आज की पीढ़ी का बिना पढ़े-लिखे भला नहीं हो सकता।

शिक्षा से ही रोजगार के अवसरों का सृजन होता है। आज वही देश सबसे ताकतवरों की श्रेणी में आता है, जिसके पास ज्ञान की शक्ति है। अब वो दिन गये, जब तलवार और बंदूकों से लड़ाईयां लड़ी जाती थी, अब तो केवल दिमाग से खून-खराबा किए बिना ही बड़ी-बड़ी लड़ाईयां जीत ली जाती हैं।

शिक्षा का अधिकार

वैसे शिक्षा पाना हर किसी का अधिकार है। लेकिन अब इस पर कानून बन गया है। इसका तात्पर्य यह हुआ कि अब हर किसी को अपने बच्चों को पढ़ाना अनिवार्य है। ‘निःशुल्क एवं अनिवार्य बाल शिक्षा अधिनियम’ के नाम से यह कानून 2009 में लाया गया। शिक्षा का अधिकार’ हमारे देश के संविधान में वर्णित मूल अधिकारों में से एक है।

46वें संविधान संशोधन, 2002 में मौलिक अधिकार के रुप में चौदह साल तक के सभी बच्चों को मुफ्त और अनिवार्य शिक्षा देने का नियम है। शिक्षा का अधिकार (आरटीआई एक्ट) संविधान के 21अ में जोड़ा गया है। यह 1 अप्रैल, 2010 से प्रभावी है। आरटीआई एक्ट में निम्न बातें बतायी गयीं हैं।

इस विधान के अनुसार अब किसी भी सरकारी विद्यालयों में बच्चों को मुफ्त और अनिवार्य शिक्षा देने का प्रावधान है।
शिक्षा का अधिकार कानून विद्यार्थी-शिक्षक-अनुपात (प्रति शिक्षक बच्चों की संख्या), कक्षाओं, लड़कियों और लड़कों के लिए अलग शौचालय, पीने के पानी की सुविधा, स्कूल-कार्य दिवसों की संख्या, शिक्षकों के काम के घंटे से संबंधित मानदंड और मानक देता है।
भारत में प्रत्येक प्राथमिक विद्यालय (प्राथमिक विद्यालय + मध्य विद्यालय) को शिक्षा के अधिकार अधिनियम द्वारा निर्धारित न्यूनतम मानक बनाए रखने के लिए इन मानदंडों का पालन करना है।
जो बच्चे किसी कारणवश उचित समय पर विद्यालय नहीं जा पाते, उन्हें भी उचित कक्षा में प्रवेश देने का नियम है।
साथ ही यह प्रशिक्षित शिक्षकों की नियुक्ति भी करता है।

यह संविधान में उल्लेख किए गये मूल्‍यों के हिसाब से पाठ्यक्रम के विकास के लिए प्रावधान करता है। और बच्‍चे के समग्र विकास, बच्‍चे के ज्ञान, सम्भावना और प्रतिभा निखारने तथा बच्‍चे की मित्रवत प्रणाली एवं बच्‍चा केन्द्रित ज्ञान प्रणाली के द्वारा बच्‍चे को डर, चोट और चिंता से मुक्‍त करने को संकल्पबध्द है।

शिक्षा पर आधुनिकीकरण का प्रभाव – निबंध 3 (500 शब्द)

हमारा देश प्राचीनकाल से ही शिक्षा का केंद्र रहा है। भारत में शिक्षा का समृद्ध और दिलचस्प इतिहास रहा है। ऐसा माना जाता है कि प्राचीन दिनों में, शिक्षा को संतों और विद्वानों द्वारा मौखिक रूप से दिया जाता था और एक पीढ़ी से दूसरी पीढ़ी तक जानकारी को प्रेषित किया जाता था।

पत्रों के विकास के बाद, यह ताड़ के पत्तों और पेड़ों की छाल का उपयोग करके लेखन का रूप ले लिया। इससे लिखित साहित्य के प्रसार में भी मदद मिली। मंदिरों और सामुदायिक केंद्रों ने स्कूलों की भूमिका बनाई। बाद में, शिक्षा की गुरुकुल प्रणाली अस्तित्व में आई।

शिक्षा पर आधुनिकीकरण का प्रभाव

शिक्षा समाज में एक महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाती है। शिक्षा ही हमारे ज्ञान का सृजन करती है, इसे छात्रों को हस्तांतरित करती है और नवीन ज्ञान को बढ़ावा देती है। आधुनिकीकरण सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक परिवर्तन की एक प्रक्रिया है। यह मूल्यों, मानदंडों, संस्थानों और संरचनाओं को शामिल करने वाली परिवर्तन की श्रृंखला है। समाजशास्त्रीय दृष्टिकोण के अनुसार, शिक्षा व्यक्ति की व्यक्तिगत जरूरतों के हिसाब से नहीं होती है, बल्कि यह उस समाज की जरूरतों से उत्पन्न होती है, जिसमें व्यक्ति सदस्य होता है।

एक स्थिर समाज में, शैक्षिक प्रणाली का मुख्य कार्य सांस्कृतिक विरासत को नई पीढ़ियों तक पहुंचाना है। लेकिन एक बदलते समाज में, इसका स्वरुप पीढ़ी-दर-पीढ़ी बदलते रहता हैं और ऐसे समाज में शैक्षणिक व्यवस्था को न केवल सांस्कृतिक विरासत के रुप में लेना चाहिए, बल्कि युवा को उनमें बदलाव के समायोजन के लिए तैयार करने में भी मदद करनी चाहिए। और यही भविष्य में होने वाली संभावनाओं की आधारशिला रखता है।

आधुनिक शैक्षणिक संस्थानों में कुशल लोग तैयार होते हैं, जिनके वैज्ञानिक और तकनीकी ज्ञान से देश का औद्योगिक विकास होता है। व्यक्तिवाद और सार्वभौमिकतावादी नैतिकता आदि जैसे अन्य मूल्यों को भी शिक्षा के माध्यम से विकसित किया जा सकता है। इस प्रकार शिक्षा आधुनिकीकरण का एक महत्वपूर्ण अस्त्र हो सकता है। शिक्षा के महत्व को इस तथ्य से महसूस किया जा सकता है कि सभी आधुनिक समाज शिक्षा के सार्वभौमिकरण पर जोर देते हैं और प्राचीन दिनों में, शिक्षा एक विशेष समूह के लिए केंद्रित थी। लेकिन शिक्षा के आधुनिकीकरण के साथ, अब हर किसी के पास अपनी जाति, धर्म, संस्कृति और आर्थिक पृष्ठभूमि के बावजूद शिक्षा प्राप्त करने की सुविधा है।

आधुनिकीकरण का असर विद्यालयों में भी देखा जा सकता है। आधुनिक दिन के विद्यालय पूरी तरह से तकनीकी रूप से ध्वनि उपकरणों से लैस हैं जो बच्चों को अधिक स्पष्ट तरीके से अपनी विशेषज्ञता विकसित करने में मदद करते हैं। प्रभावी सुविधाएं विकलांग व्यक्तियों के लिए बाधा मुक्त साधन प्रदान करती हैं, स्वास्थ्य और पर्यावरणीय खतरों से मुक्त होती हैं, छात्रों और शिक्षकों के लिए पर्याप्त स्थान प्रदान करती हैं, और कक्षा और निर्देशात्मक उपयोग के लिए उपयुक्त तकनीक से लैस होती हैं।

वर्तमान शिक्षण प्रणाली को एक कक्षा प्रणाली की तुलना में कक्षा के स्थानों में अधिक लचीलेपन की जरुरत होती है। उदाहरण के लिए, छोटे समूहों में एक साथ काम करने वाले छात्र, जिले के कुछ नए प्राथमिक विद्यालयों में कक्षाओं के बीच साझा स्थानों का उपयोग कर सकते हैं।

Every year in October we have a Literary and Cultural Festival. In this, students from different schools come to participate. Furthermore, it was a three-day function. The chronological approach (sometimes called the cause-and-effect approach) is probably the simplest way to structure an essay. It just means discussing events in the order in which they occurred, discussing how they are related (i.e. the cause and effect involved) as you go.

A chronological approach can be useful when your essay is about a series of events. Don’t rule out other approaches, though—even when the chronological approach is the obvious one, you might be able to bring out more with a different structure.

Essays with two or more main subjects are often structured around comparing and contrasting . For example, a literary analysis essay might compare two different texts, and an argumentative essay might compare the strengths of different arguments.

There are two main ways of structuring a compare-and-contrast essay: the alternating method, and the block method.

Alternating

In the alternating method, each paragraph compares your subjects in terms of a specific point of comparison. These points of comparison are therefore what defines each paragraph.

This is just what it sounds like: You define the problem, characterize a method or theory that may solve it, and finally analyze the problem, using this method or theory to arrive at a solution. If the problem is theoretical, the solution might be the analysis you present in the essay itself; otherwise, you might just present a proposed solution.

Signposting means guiding the reader through your essay with language that describes or hints at the structure of what follows. It can help you clarify your structure for yourself as well as helping your reader follow your ideas.

The essay overview

In longer essays whose body is split into multiple named sections, the introduction often ends with an overview of the rest of the essay. This gives a brief description of the main idea or argument of each section.

The overview allows the reader to immediately understand what will be covered in the essay and in what order. Though it describes what comes later in the text, it is generally written in the present tense . The following example is from a literary analysis essay on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein .

Transitions

Transition words and phrases are used throughout all good essays to link together different ideas. They help guide the reader through your text, and an essay that uses them effectively will be much easier to follow.

Various different relationships can be expressed by transition words, as shown in this example.

Because Hitler failed to respond to the British ultimatum, France and the UK declared war on Germany. Although it was an outcome the Allies had hoped to avoid, they were prepared to back up their ultimatum in order to combat the existential threat posed by the Third Reich.

Transition sentences may be included to transition between different paragraphs or sections of an essay. A good transition sentence moves the reader on to the next topic while indicating how it relates to the previous one.

It was the first day in school after first term examination when school picnic for this year was announced in the class. Everyone has been excited since then. This year’s picnic was destined to be at Vananchal resort which is located in the forest of Jambughoda. Luckily for me and my group permission of our parents has never been a problem, so we were set to go since the day of announcement.

It was a cold winter morning, the school bus departed at sharp seven in the morning. Almost two hour long route to the resort felt like a matter of few minutes as we played fun games with fellow classmates. We reported to the resort at around 9, we were all provided welcome drinks. Then we left for nature walk where we saw varied types of trees and birds. After the nature walk it was time for the most exciting part of the picnic.

Yes! It was pool time which unfortunately couldn’t last whole day. That’s the thing about pool, no matter how long you get to be in it, it’s never enough. Then we had lunch, followed by some fun activities such as rappelling and zip-line which too was fun. The time passed so soon that we couldn’t even realize the day was over. On the day of the picnic unlike every other day we reported to the school earlier than our regular timings, due to excitement, obviously! Our class was divided into four groups of ten students each. We reached the destination at 10am and were given half an hour to collect our swim suits take a shower and get ready for the real fun. Water Park was full of amazing water rides namely Demon’s hole, lazy river, Amazonia, free fall, loop hole, etc. Demon’s hole and Amazonia were my favourite. Demon’s hole was a dark cylindrical water slide with utterly thrilling twists and turns and Amazonia was a super large water slide which took us through an artificially created jungle, which gave a feel of passing through the streams in Amazon rain forests.

In lunch, we were served lip-smacking Punjabi food with gulab jamuns in dessert. Then, there was a wave pool, besides which there was a beautiful artificial waterfall. We checked out from the park at 5pm in the evening and returned to our school at around eight.

I remember almost nothing from the return journey as we were all tired till the end of the day. Our legs were paining as they had exercised hard while climbing those steps for the slides, and thus out of exhaustion almost everyone was asleep in the bus while returning. It was a day well spent.

The happiness that we gained in the most simple things in life, bursting into laughter after playing pranks on our fellow classmates and that momentary anger of the one who had been pranked, those tired yet smiling faces at the end of the day and many more tingling moments are the memories to cherish forever.

Memories of this day will always hold a cosy corner in my and all our hearts. Somewhere I still wish if I could go back to this day again and feel that same thing with those same people all over again.

I was in standard 3 rd when my school had arranged a picnic to Kamla Nehru zoo situated besides Kankaria Lake, Ahmedabad. Being a kid, I was extremely excited for the picnic. A day before picnic I went to the nearby shop with my father to buy some snacks for the picnic. I bought a packet of chips, cookies, soya sticks and few packets of chewing gum.

Singing, dancing, playing we travelled the road till the destination. We were served ice-cream as soon as we got there. We were all excited to step in the zoo.

First of all we had to enter the bird section where we saw a number of varied and beautiful birds. Toucan, a black and yellow coloured bird with a large beak, kingfisher a little bird with most vivid colours, Hornbill a beautiful bird with a horn like thing on its head and albatross a fine white and black coloured with aquatic habitat were some of the birds we saw. We also saw deer, hippopotamus, fox, wolf, alligator, crocodile, wild ass, yellow python snake, bear and many more. But our favourite ones were still left, where we had to visit after the lunch.

Finally, after the lunch it was the time for which we were all so excited about – to see the fastest animal cheetah, the national animal tiger and of course the king of the jungle, lion. We also saw jaguar and leopard. We were done with the zoo at around 3 in the afternoon, and we had time until 5 pm so the teachers decided to take us all to have a look around at Kankaria Lake. It was a beautiful place.

We sat on a mini toy train there which took us on a ride around the lake. After everyone completed the ride, it was almost 5 which was the time to leave for home. Teachers started counting the number of students, which brought them to the conclusion that one kid from our class has been missing. The teachers panicked however they were finally able to find Hussain, the lost one after 10 minutes of search operation.

Today, it might be a mere picnic to a zoo, but when I remember back I realized how these little things used to make me happy.

There were different buildings build for different purposes. There were offices, factories and many other places where we can work and get salary in Kidzos. The kids are divided in different groups for different jobs as per their age. First of all, I and my friends went to the dentist and learnt some skills for removing the tooth having cavities. Not only this, we also did check up of other kids with different instruments. At the end of that, the head dentist made us understand about how crucial it is to do proper brushing. After that, we went to the bakery and made our very own delicious donuts.

We also did the wall painting on a very huge wall besides the road. Then, we got to know that there is a fashion show and we can walk on the ramp wearing those beautiful clothes. I and my friends couldn’t control our excitement and we immediately went for that. We walked through the ramp and it was an amazing experience. I learnt few notes on guitar and that was my first time on any musical instrument. After learning all this new stuff, we thought to try our hands on gadgets also. So, we went to the gadget store nearby where we were given information about the technology used in mobile phones and laptops. It was real fun.

To end our tour, there was a series of folk dances and music where all the kids had prepared something of their own for the entertainment of the audiences. I was also a part of a group with whom I performed Bhangra. This made us interact with other kids more and that is where I made my new friends who were basically from Amritsar, my birth place. All of the shows, including the singing event, helped us know how amazingly talented other kids were. After all of this there was a thank you speech by the staff members with whom we were also connected now.

All of this experience of being part of this amazing world was beyond words. It was the world where we not just used the amenities but also helped in creating them. The joy of making something on your own was just beyond words. Every kid should once visit Kidzania in their childhood and make long lasting memories there.

“I just can’t think of anything,” my student said.

After 10 years of teaching college essay writing, I was familiar with this reply. For some reason, when you’re asked to recount an important experience from your life, it is common to forget everything that has ever happened to you. It’s a long-form version of the anxiety that takes hold at a corporate retreat when you’re invited to say “one interesting thing about yourself,” and you suddenly believe that you are the most boring person in the entire world. Once during a version of this icebreaker, a man volunteered that he had only one kidney, and I remember feeling incredibly jealous of him.

I tried to jog this student’s memory. What about his love of music? Or his experience learning English? Or that time on a summer camping trip when he and his friends had nearly drowned? “I don’t know,” he said with a sigh. “That all seems kind of cliché.”

Applying to college has always been about standing out. When I teach college essay workshops and coach applicants one on one, I see my role as helping students to capture their voice and their way of processing the world, things that are, by definition, unique to each individual. Still, many of my students (and their parents) worry that as getting into college becomes increasingly competitive, this won’t be enough to set them apart.

Their anxiety is understandable. On Thursday, in a tradition known as “Ivy Day,” all eight Ivy League schools released their regular admission decisions. Top colleges often issue statements about how impressive (and competitive) their applicant pools were this cycle. The intention is to flatter accepted students and assuage rejected ones, but for those who have not yet applied to college, these statements reinforce the fear that there is an ever-expanding cohort of applicants with straight A’s and perfect SATs and harrowing camping trip stories all competing with one another for a vanishingly small number of spots.

This scarcity has led to a boom in the college consulting industry, now estimated to be a $2.9 billion business. In recent years, many of these advisers and companies have begun to promote the idea of personal branding — a way for teenagers to distinguish themselves by becoming as clear and memorable as a good tagline.

While this approach often leads to a strong application, students who brand themselves too early or too definitively risk missing out on the kind of exploration that will prepare them for adult life.

Like a corporate brand, the personal brand is meant to distill everything you stand for (honesty, integrity, high quality, low prices) into a cohesive identity that can be grasped at a glance. On its website, a college prep and advising company called Dallas Admissions explains the benefits of branding this way: “Each person is complex, yet admissions officers only have a small amount of time to spend learning about each prospective student. The smart student boils down key aspects of himself or herself into their personal ‘brand’ and sells that to the college admissions officer.”

Identifying the key aspects of yourself may seem like a lifelong project, but unfortunately, college applicants don’t have that kind of time. Online, there are dozens of lesson plans and seminars promising to walk students through the process of branding themselves in five to 10 easy steps. The majority begin with questions I would have found panic-inducing as a teenager, such as, “What is the story you want people to tell about you when you’re not in the room?”

Where I hoped others would describe me as “normal” or, in my wildest dreams, “cool,” today’s teenagers are expected to leave this exercise with labels like, Committed Athlete and Compassionate Leader or Environmentally Conscious Musician. Once students have a draft of their ideal self, they’re offered instructions for manifesting it (or at least, the appearance of it) in person and online. These range from common-sense tips (not posting illegal activity on social media) to more drastic recommendations (getting different friends).

It’s not just that these courses cut corners on self-discovery; it’s that they get the process backward. A personal brand is effective only if you can support it with action, so instead of finding their passion and values through experience, students are encouraged to select a passion as early as possible and then rack up the experience to substantiate it. Many college consultants suggest beginning to align your activities with your college ambitions by ninth grade, while the National Institute of Certified College Planners recommends students “talk with parents, guardians, and/or an academic adviser to create a clear plan for your education and career-related goals” in junior high.

The idea of a group of middle schoolers soberly mapping out their careers is both comical and depressing, but when I read student essays today, I can see that this advice is getting through. Over the past few years, I have been struck by how many high school seniors already have defined career goals as well as a C.V. of relevant extracurriculars to go with them. This widens the gap between wealthy students and those who lack the resources to secure a fancy research gig or start their own small business. (A shocking number of college applicants claim to have started a small business.) It also puts pressure on all students to define themselves at a moment when they are anxious to fit in and yet changing all the time.

In the world of branding, a word that appears again and again is “consistency.” If you are Charmin, that makes sense. People opening a roll of toilet paper do not want to be surprised. If you are a teenage human being, however, that is an unreasonable expectation. Changing one’s interests, opinions and presentation is a natural part of adolescence and an instructive one. I find that my students with scattershot résumés are often the most confident. They’re not afraid to push back against suggestions that ring false and will insist on revising their essay until it actually “feels like me.” On the other hand, many of my most accomplished students are so quick to accept feedback that I am wary of offering it, lest I become one more adult trying to shape them into an admission-worthy ideal.

I understand that for parents, prioritizing exploration can feel like a risky bet. Self-insight is hard to quantify and to communicate in a college application. When it comes to building a life, however, this kind of knowledge has more value than any accolade, and it cannot be generated through a brainstorming exercise in a six-step personal branding course online. To equip kids for the world, we need to provide them not just with opportunities for achievement, but with opportunities to fail, to learn, to wander and to change their minds.

In some ways, the college essay is a microcosm of modern adolescence. Depending on how you look at it, it’s either a forum for self-discovery or a high-stakes test you need to ace. I try to assure my students that it is the former. I tell them that it’s a chance to take stock of everything you’ve experienced and learned over the past 18 years and everything you have to offer as a result.

That can be a profound process. But to embark on it, students have to believe that colleges really want to see the person behind the brand. And they have to have the chance to know who that person is.

Perry High School students win 2024 Perry Optimist essay contest

Perry Optimist Club handed out medals to the local essay contest winners during its meeting on Wednesday, April 3 at the Hotel Pattee.

Linda Andorf, who facilitated the contest, said DMACC VanKirk Career Academy's Linda Kaufman assigned a writing assignment to her Perry High School/DMACC students. The assignment was graded and was then judged anonymously by Perry Optimist Club members. This year, 32 essays were submitted and four places were awarded.

Erika Guardado won first place while Jennifer Ramos received second place. Mia Munoz and Kain Killmer tied for third place.

The prompt for this year’s contest was "Optimism: How it Connects Us."

Guardado’s essay has been sent to the district level. She will also receive a $500 scholarship during the senior awards assembly in May.

Reviewing my application reminded me how far I have come as a student.

"Brian spoke so fast it was electrifying."

This was the first quote from my Yale interviewer. She wrote those words in my admissions file, a document I finally got my hands on three years after being accepted into Yale University .

I remember that interview like it was yesterday. It was a Zoom call — my application cycle happened at the crux of pandemic remote learning — and I was wearing my father's old, oversize dress shirt. The interviewer was lovely. Some of my answers to her questions probably didn't make sense, and she was right. I definitely forgot to breathe in between my sentences.

But viewing my admissions file years later gave me a peek into what my interviewer was actually thinking that day, and I learned what really got me into Yale.

I reviewed my application as a junior with the registrar

Every student in the US can review their college admissions file under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. I emailed my university registrar, and within 45 days, a member of their support staff reached back out to schedule a virtual meeting. Picture-taking and recording were not allowed, so I jotted notes by hand.

There was very little verbal interaction between me and the staff member. She screen-shared my admissions file and let me read in silence. Something told me she understood the emotional weight of this moment for students, and I appreciated that. It is intimidating for any teenager to package their identity into a 650-word common application essay and a questionnaire — but it is arguably even more so to witness retrospectively how everything was judged.

I got a behind-the-scenes look into Yale admissions when they read my application

Each aspect of my application was rated out of nine points. My readers gave me a six for my extracurriculars and for my first teacher recommendation. They gave me a seven for my second teacher recommendation and my counselor's recommendation. I received an "outstanding" for my interview and a 2++ for my overall rating. The overall rating is given on a scale from 1 to 4, with 1 being the highest, and pluses were a good sign.

The process reminded me how far I have come

Coming from an underserved household where no one had gone to college, I had always looked at the Ivy League application process skeptically.

Without the resources to enroll in SAT test prep and the financial safety net to pursue unpaid leadership positions and resume-boosting activities at school, I had doubted the "holistic" admissions process many colleges boast. My critiques about Yale remain numerous.

But at least in their comments, the admissions committee gave me grace in that they reviewed my application in light of my circumstances. I might never know exactly what happened in that reading room. Still, a couple of lessons ring true, based on my own viewing experience and my conversations with others who had done the same: Good character and potential are the key; I didn't need to be perfect.

And finally, I — not anyone else — needed to give me the fighting chance of applying in the first place.

"GPA is outstanding, especially in context," an admissions officer said. "This is a home run."

Swastika-wearing gunman kills 15, wounds 24 in school shooting in Russia

A swastika-clad gunman opened fire at a school in central Russia on Monday, killing at least 15 people, 11 of them children, before he turned the gun on himself, authorities said.

Another 24 people, 22 children and two adults, were wounded in the attack on School No. 88 in Izhevsk, the capital of Udmurtia, about 600 miles east of Moscow, Russia’s Investigative Committee said.

The gunman was identified as Artem Kazantsev, 34. Udmurtia Gov. Alexander Brechalov said he was registered as a patient at a psychiatric facility.

The Investigative Committee released video purporting to show the gunman’s body in a classroom. He appeared to be wearing nearly all black, including a balaclava covering his face and a T-shirt with a red swastika drawn on it.

The video also showed the word "hate" written in Russian on all the gun clips.

“I express my deep, sincere condolences to the relatives and friends of those who died as a result of the cynical and ruthless attack on the school in Izhevsk,” Investigative Committee Chairman Alexander Bastrykin said in a statement.

“The monstrous crime claimed the lives of children, including very young ones, and adults. This is a terrible tragedy, a heavy loss for all of us.”

The gunman was armed with two pistols and an additional large supply of ammunition, the Russian state news agency Tass reported .

Monday’s attack was the latest in several recent school shootings in Russia.

Seven children and two adults were gunned down in May last year in an attack in Kazan.

And in April, a man killed two children and a teacher at a kindergarten in Veshkayma, a town in the central Ulyanovsk region, before he died by suicide.
