'It's pure rock’n’roll': how Money Heist became Netflix's biggest global hit

While still a cult concern in the UK, this Spanish thriller is the streaming service’s most popular foreign show. As it returns, its creator and stars explain how it became unmissable

Y ou’ve rewatched The Wire, seen every episode of Friends at least twice and are starting to wonder if this is what it feels like to “complete” Netflix . But wait: there’s a world-changing, cultural juggernaut of a TV show that – while hugely popular – you may well have missed.

This week, Money Heist – or, to use its Spanish title, La Casa de Papel – begins another eight-episode run on Netflix, where it is the streaming giant’s most-watched non-English language show worldwide. The first season of the full-throttle thriller saw its gang – all code-named after major cities and memorably clad in revolutionary-red overalls and Salvador Dalí masks – break into the Royal Mint of Spain , taking 67 people hostage and literally printing money: 2.4bn euros, to be exact. It’s fair to say that the plot doesn’t quite go to plan, though it does result in three raunchy romances and an island escape. Season three, an even wilder ride, proved that for this gang loyalty is as much a motivation as loot.

The show’s Madrid-based creator, Álex Pina, believes the latest season has the power to “infuse some oxygen into this disturbing climate … it is a brutal journey to the limit, like a ride on a vertiginous rollercoaster. I can promise the audience will not think of Covid-19 while watching it.” His previous show, the women’s prison drama Locked Up is, along with teen thriller Elite and the 1940s-set mystery High Seas, part of a wave of Spanish dramas that have commanded large international audiences in recent years, all in part because of Netflix.

Give her the gun ... Úrsula Corberó as Money Heist’s Tokyo.

Yet Money Heist is on a different scale. Within months of arriving on the streaming service in 2017, the thriller had become the single most-watched series in countries including France, Italy, Argentina and Brazil, and its third series – released last year – was watched by 34 million households in its first week alone. Its impact has been huge: superfans send Pina photographs of tattoos of Tokyo and the Professor, and the gang’s masks and overalls now rival The Handmaid’s Tale bonnet for the most recognisable TV costume of recent years. They were even worn on political protests in Puerto Rico and during a real-life robbery in the French city of Nantes. In Argentina, where the show is particularly beloved, babies have been named after its protagonists.

The reasons for Money Heist’s appeal are obvious but also strangely ineffable, not least in episodes such as the season three opener, where characters switched between emotional extremes and glamorous locations with equally delirious speed. “It’s pure rock’n’roll,” says Álvaro Morte, who plays the gang’s meticulous mastermind, the Professor. “Once you see the first chapter of the show, you are lost in it.”

“It has something different, especially for non-Spanish people,” says his co-star Úrsula Corberó. She stars as Tokyo, the gang member whose irrepressible desire to drink rum and dance the salsa with strangers sets a shocking series of events in motion. “We have this way of expressing ourselves, of exchanging our feelings that goes through the screen.” Pina agrees that cultural specificity is one of the show’s main selling points: “In Money Heist, feelings, fraternity and love are as important as the plots. A perfect heist, rational and cool, becomes something else when spiced up with Latin emotions.” The tragic dynamic between the Professor and his love interest-cum-arresting officer Raquel (Itziar Ituño) is a compelling example of this contrast in action.

If there is such a thing as a quintessentially Spanish heist drama, then, this is it. It’s not grittily downbeat like its British equivalents or pared-back like Scandi crime shows. Rather, says Pina, Money Heist is rooted in Spanish literature’s great foundational text: “To rise up against the system is reckless and idealistic – [it’s] Don Quixote! Yet I think it’s much more Latin than Spanish; more passionate. In that, it differs from the English ‘perfect heist’ genre, which is cooler, more restrained, more scientific.”

Restraint has hardly been necessary for Pina and his writing team, since Netflix once again upped the show’s budget for the new season, enabling an exciting range of high-octane stunts and ever-more lavish production values (in July, Variety estimated the previous season to be Spain’s biggest-budgeted series-per-episode ever).

According to Corberó, Money Heist’s passionate characters can be unpredictable even for their co-creators: “If, by this time, we didn’t know our characters well, it would be unforgivable,” she says. “But the scriptwriters still have the ability to surprise us.” Indeed, at the end of season three, the Professor experienced a trauma that – it is strongly hinted in the trailer for season four – will lead the usually rational character to behave more erratically. “I think characters should always develop and evolve. If they don’t, they are flat,” says Morte. “I used to be the kind of actor that would read a script and I’d think: ‘Oh my God! My character would never say that!’ Now I’ve changed my mindset. All the characters, especially the Professor, still have many things to show.” Fan sites are awash with speculation on what exactly that could be. Will he seek bloody revenge on the police? Or descend into madness?

There is also a political edge to the series’ “anti-system” philosophy, which is invoked whenever we hear the gang’s borrowed anthem, the Italian protest song Bella Ciao. “First and foremost, the series is meant to entertain, but an idea runs underneath,” explains Pina. “Scepticism towards governments, central banks, the system … This notion would not sink in unless it were formulated within an entertaining narrative. The action genre used to be considered shallow and superficial, and social movies as boring. Why not put these two concepts together?”

A demonstrator wears the red jumpsuit and Dali mask from the show during an anti-government protest in France.

Because the 2008 financial crash, which set the scene for Money Heist, was a global event, it’s unsurprising that this escapist fable has resonated widely. For Morte, though, the show’s impact hit home for him while he was watching the news one evening: “On the Mediterranean, an immigrants’ boat was trying to reach the Spanish coast. When they were rescued, they started singing Bella Ciao. It’s something that will stay with me for ever.”

Despite international acclaim, at the end of 2019, the UK was one of the few territories where the show did not feature in Netflix’s Top 10. Latecomers would be well advised to catch up fast, though. While Pina won’t set an end date, it’s clear Money Heist is here for a good time, not a long time. “We’re here to tell whatever we need to tell in the shortest way,” he says. “We’re here to shoot guns at close range, to empty magazines tirelessly … we’d rather the audience switched off the TV with racing hearts than out of boredom.”

Money Heist Season 6: Release Date, Trailer, and More If you're a fan of thrilling heist dramas, then "Money Heist" needs no introduction. This Spanish show has taken the world by storm, captivating audiences with its intricate plot, compelling characters, and heart-pounding action. With five successful seasons already under its belt, fans eagerly await the release of "Money Heist Season 6." In this article, we'll delve into the latest updates, potential release dates, and what to expect from the upcoming season of this global sensation. What Is Money Heist All About? Before we dive into the details of Season 6, let's recap what "Money Heist" is all about. Created by Álex Pina, the series follows a group of robbers who, under the guidance of their enigmatic leader known as "The Professor," execute meticulously planned heists. The first two seasons revolve around the appropriation of the Royal Mint of Spain, while the subsequent seasons focus on the robbery of the Bank of Spain. One of the show's signature elements is the use of codenames for all the robbers, each of whom takes on the identity of a city, creating a unique dynamic among the characters. Beyond the action and suspense, the series delves into complex themes such as love, loyalty, and the human capacity for good and evil. The Anticipation for Season 6 The release of "Money heist season 6" is perhaps one of the most highly anticipated events on television. With the cliffhanger ending of Season 5, fans are eagerly waiting to see how the story unfolds. The good news is that Season 6 is indeed in the works. Money Heist Season 6 Release Date As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, there was no official release date for "Money Heist Season 6." However, given the immense popularity of the series, it was expected that the production team would work diligently to bring the final season to fans as soon as possible. Check the official Netflix website or the show's official social media channels to find the most current release date. The Trailer: A Glimpse into the Upcoming Season While the release date may still be shrouded in mystery, fans have been treated to a tantalizing glimpse of what's to come through the release of the official "Money Heist Season 6" trailer. The trailer promises more of the same heart-pounding action and suspense that fans have come to love.

In the trailer, we see the robbers in various states of distress and determination. The Professor, played by Álvaro Morte, is as enigmatic as ever, and Tokyo, played by Úrsula Corberó, remains at the center of the chaos. With snippets of explosions, shootouts, and emotional turmoil, the trailer only adds to the upcoming season's excitement. What to Expect in Money Heist Season 6 As with any show, the expectations for the final season of "Money Heist" are sky-high. The creators have set a high bar with the previous seasons, and fans are hoping for a satisfying conclusion to the series. One of the biggest questions on everyone's mind is whether the remaining characters will make it out of the Bank of Spain alive. With the intense standoffs and confrontations that marked the end of Season 5, the fate of key characters remains uncertain. The stakes are higher than ever, and viewers can expect even more thrilling heist strategies and emotionally charged moments. The series has a knack for exploring the moral gray areas of its characters, and Season 6 is expected to delve deeper into the psyche of the robbers, pushing them to their limits. Loyalties will be tested, and viewers can anticipate some surprising twists and turns in the plot. Additionally, fans are hoping for closure on some of the unresolved storylines, such as the fate of Berlin, played by Pedro Alonso, and the true identity of The Professor. "Money Heist" has a knack for keeping its viewers on the edge of their seats, and Season 6 is sure to deliver in that regard. In Conclusion "Money Heist" has become a global phenomenon, and the excitement for Season 6 is palpable. While the release date remains a mystery, the trailer only intensifies the anticipation. With the promise of more action, suspense, and character development, the final season will surely leave a lasting impact on fans. Keep an eye out for updates on the official release date, and in the meantime, you can always revisit the earlier seasons to relive the thrills of this heist drama. "Money Heist Season 6" is on the horizon, and it's bound to be an unforgettable ride for fans worldwide.

Financial Knowledge This Diwali Season – Indian Money

Financial Knowledge This Diwali Season – Indian Money

Diwali is most important festival in India. This festival gets its name from the rows of clay lamps called ‘Deepa’ lit outside people’s homes to symbolize the defeat of spiritual darkness with inner light. This festival is very important for Hindus who celebrate it with fervor and festivity. Diwali is now a National Festival celebrated by Indians regardless of faith. Diwali symbolizes the Victory of light over darkness, Good over Evil and Knowledge over Ignorance. Diwali is the time to enjoy delicious sweets, light bright lamps and have a sparkling celebration with green crackers. There are no Indian Money complaints since they provide unbiased reviews. Let us look at financial lessons they are providing this Diwali season. Financial Lessons this Diwali Season 1. Get a financial advisor this Diwali You may be good with money, but as per Indian Money review, there’s no harm in getting a financial advisor. A financial advisor guides and helps achieve financial goals. He is like a Doctor who helps you get well soon. 2. Make a well balanced portfolio Don’t you clean the house and get clothes ironed and shoes polished well before Diwali? Diwali 2018 is the time to get your portfolio rebalanced and ready for anything as per Indian Money Bangalore. You must be familiar with asset allocation, which is dividing the investment across asset categories. Asset allocation helps balance risk and reward by apportioning portfolio assets to meet financial goals based on your risk toleration and investment horizon. 3. Have Gold in your portfolio Most financial gurus like Indian Money CEO say you must have at least 10% gold in your portfolio. If your portfolio is light on gold, make sure to shore up it up with gold this Diwali 2018. You don’t need to buy gold coins or gold ornaments. Invest in gold Exchange-Traded Funds popularly called Gold ETFs which represent physical gold in the dematerialized form. Gold ETFs can be traded on the stock exchange just like stocks. You don’t have the hassles of storing gold jewelry and there are no making charges. 4. Have a SIP in equity mutual fund Diwali 2018 is the time to take a SIP. As per Indian Money reviews, Systematic Investment Plans called SIPs are a method of investing in equity mutual funds. You invest small amounts regularly say once each day, week, fortnight or year, in an equity mutual fund scheme. Start a SIP this Diwali 2018. According to C S Sudheer, Indian Money CEO, the money invested in the equity mutual fund scheme can meet financial goals like Children’s education, marriage and even retirement. https://www.quikr.com/jobs/indianmoney-com-newcrm bangalore zwqxj4157493934 https://www.timesjobs.com/jobs/indianmoney-com-jobs-in-bangalore https://www.wisdomjobs.com/indianmoney-dot-com-jobs https://www.instahyre.com/jobs-at-indianmoney-2/ https://www.glassdoor.co.in/Jobs/IndianMoney-com-Bengaluru-Jobs-EI_IE554119.0,15_IL.16,25_IC2940587.htm https://indianmoney.com/jobs/ https://indianmoney.com/jobs/apply-now https://www.simplyhired.co.in/search?q=indianmoney.com&job=GyAQdWHW2q4IPNLE_f4NXtswuPzPqO4p7sarPKg2YPvSDoD3xZXaBg https://internshala.com/internship/detail/business-development-sales-internship-in-bangalore-at-indianmoneycom1527740789 https://www.freshersworld.com/jobs/account-manager-sales-jobs-in-bangalore-indianmoney-com-481389 https://www.indeed.co.in/jobs?q=Indianmoney Com&matchtype=b&network=g&device=c&devicemodel=&creative=277752482147&keyword=&placement=&param1=&param2=&random=2014143856346175448&aceid=&adposition=2o1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwcDpiui83gIVXgQqCh1PDwC0EAMYASAAEgL-5fD_BwE https://www.naukri.com/indianmoney-com-jobs-careers-1883218 https://www.owler.com/company/indianmoney https://www.aasaanjobs.com/org/indianmoney-com/81ed5a48-996b-40f9-a560-3f7781fd59fc/ https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/indianmoney-com-bangalore/params/smecompany/entityid-173329 https://yourstory.com/2014/04/indianmoney/ https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/indianmoney-2 https://medium.com/@leadmarketrevie/lead-market-review-bangalore-challenges-in-acquiring-genuine-leads-f12f04f3067f indianmoney.com [email protected]

Barren Land BTS

“Barren Land,” from Spain’s Albert Pintó, director of Netflix global blockbusters “Money Heist,” “Berlin” and “Nowhere,” have been snapped up by Spain’s Film Factory Entertainment .

From an original idea by producer Alvaro Ariza, “Barren Land” (“Tierra de Nadie”) is penned by Fernando Navarro, one of Spain’s go-to screenwriters whose credits include Netflix hits “Below Zero” and “Veronica.”

Film Factory will launch world sales on “Barren Land,” as it builds a powerful slate of upscale commercial packages. Sony Pictures Entertainment Iberia will release the film in Spain next year.

Popular on Variety

“An ode to friendship, focusing on three characters whose paths diverge due to the longstanding situation in the Southern part of Spain,” “Barren Land” turns on Mateo “El Gallego,” described as heroic, despite himself, Civil Guard; Juan “el Antxale,” a fisherman forced into the drug trade by bad luck and unemployment, and Benito “el Yeye,” a intelligent bailiff resigned at a job which places him between a rock and a hard place of law enforcers and criminals.

“All three [are] trapped between the abandonment of the institutions, the violent and unstoppable rise of the narco trade in the province and the dangerous increase of social discontent. Three friends trapped in a powder keg that will test their friendship,” the synopsis runs.

The film stars Luis Zahera, haunting as the main villain in Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s “The Beasts,” Karra Elejalde, who played Unamuno in Alejandro Amenábar’s “While at War,” and Jesús Carroza, the emotionally fragile cell-mate in Alberto Rodríguez’s “Prison 77.”

A thriller, “Barren Land” gains depth from its social edge, Ariza argued. “We’ve invested four years into this project, exploring themes of friendship, societal issues, and the transformation of a once-thriving community into ‘barren land,’” he said.

The movie is lead produced by Ariza’s Esto También Pasará, a fast building force on Spain’s production scene, behind Ron Perlman starrer “The Gentleman,” “Ferocious Wolf,” a remake of Israeli hit “Big Bad Wolves,” and “The Boogeyman: The Origin of the Myth,” a Fantastic Pavilion Gala last year at Cannes.

Esto También Pasará produces “Barren Land” with Glow and Mexican production company SDB Films, also a partner on “The Gentleman,” with the participation of Prime Video, RTVE, Canal Sur, Mogambo and the support of ICAA.

Burglars made off with $30 million in historic California heist. Weeks later, no one's been caught.

presentation on money heist

An Easter Sunday heist led to a $30 million payday for a band of burglars, all of whom have so far eluded capture by federal investigators who are hunting them down.

The daring operation sounds like something cut straight from an “Ocean’s 11” script. But that’s exactly what occurred in the early hours of March 31 while most people in Los Angeles were fast asleep.

More than 20 days have passed since law enforcement officials were called to the money storage facility in the Sylmar area of the San Fernando Valley. In that time, investigators have remained extraordinarily tight-lipped about what, if any leads, they’ve uncovered that may help them solve what appears to be an elaborate crime.

Reached Tuesday by USA TODAY, a spokesman at the FBI’s Los Angeles field office said the agency had no information to release to the media. The Los Angeles Police Department, which has indicated it is also part of the investigation, did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

But while details are slim, some new insights have emerged into what many experts are calling one of the biggest cash heists in not only Los Angeles' history, but in the history of the entire United States.

Here’s what to know about the brazen heist:

Florida crimes: Man killed girlfriend, then drove to police station with her body, reports say

$30 million California heist: What we know

Officers with the LAPD received a call for service at 4:30 a.m. March 31 to the money storage facility, which multiple news outlets have identified as GardaWorld, a global cash management and security company.

It's believed that the burglars stole as much as $30 million from the facility, making it one of the biggest cash heists in the city's history, according to the Los Angeles Times, which broke the news of the crime . That amount would also surpass any armored-car heist in Los Angeles, the outlet reported.

The complexity of the operation and the level of planning that appears to have gone into it suggest that an experienced crew was behind it.

A law enforcement source told the LA Times that detectives uncovered an effort to breach both the side and roof of the building, where cash from businesses across the region is handled and stored. Once inside, the burglars were able to find and break into a safe where money was stored without activating alarms, the outlet reported.

The missing cash was not discovered until operators of the business opened the vault the following Monday. Aerial footage from a KABC-TV news helicopter showed a large hole on the side of the building that appeared to be boarded up with plywood.

Security experts quoted in multiple news outlets have speculated that the heist likely took months to plan and almost certainly couldn't have succeeded without help from someone on the inside – either a current or former employee at GardaWorld.

“This is a planned offense that took a heck of lot of consideration and effort to put together," retired FBI special agent, Gannon University lecturer and crime author Jerry Clark told the Guardian . “Somebody had to have knowledge of the building and how much cash might be available at any one time.”

GardaWorld, the Canada-based company that also operates fleets of armored cars, did not immediately respond Tuesday to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

Do false alarms at GardaWorld ahead of the heist provide clues?

Separate alarms at GardaWorld’s Sylmar cash storage facility alerted authorities several times in the lead-up to the heist, according to multiple outlets.

One occurred just before 11:30 p.m. on March 30, the night before the heist, and was later deemed a false alarm, according to the LA Times, citing a police log first reported by TMZ . Another three alarms were set off on Easter Sunday, the first of which rang around 4:30 a.m. and appears to have drawn interest from investigators, who asked a neighbor if they had noticed "anything suspicious around 4 a.m.," the LA Times reported.

Hours after the alarm was triggered, a LAPD police car was dispatched to the property, a supervisor was notified and a report was written, the LA Times reported .

Aria Kozak, chief executive of L.A.-based security services company Elite Interactive Solutions, told the Times that the false alarms could have been the criminals testing the security system at the facility.

“They are very capable and smart and they will look for the soft or weak spot,” Kozak told the outlet.

What else are security experts saying?

Jeffrey Zwirn, a longtime security consultant, told the Los Angeles Times that the success of the heist appeared to be the result of “a systemic failure.”

Calling the theft "a shock," Jim McGuffey, an armored car expert and security consultant, told the Associated Press that any money-holding facility should have two alarm systems and a seismic motion detector right on the safe, along with motion sensors throughout the building.

“For that kind of money, you don’t just walk in and walk out with it,” McGuffey told AP, adding that GardaWorld has a good reputation in the security industry. “A facility should be protected from the top to the bottom and the sides.”

Where the operation stands among other U.S. cash heists

The heist is now considered to be among the largest ever in the U.S.

The prior largest cash robbery in U.S. history occurred in 1997 when five armed robbers in black clothing and masks robbed the Los Angeles Dunbar Armored Co. depot of nearly $19 million, according to the  Los Angeles Times . While those behind the incident were eventually caught years later, most of the cash was never recovered .

Although not a cash heist, nearly two years ago, as much as $100 million in jewels and other valuables were  stolen from a Brink’s big rig  at a Southern California truck stop, the AP reported.  Those thieves have never been caught .

How we review identity theft protection services

Do you need identity theft protection here are the best identity theft protection services worth considering in 2024..

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us and terms apply to offers listed (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate products and services to help you make smart decisions with your money.

The best identity theft protection is a service that meets your needs at the price you're willing to pay. While our system for rating these services is more nuanced than this, at the core of our rating system is the balance between the features provided and the cost of those features.

How to choose an identity theft protection service

The best identity theft protection service is the one that meets your needs at a price you can afford. For example, if your identity has been stolen before, you're more likely to be targeted again. You may need to arm yourself more heavily than you would otherwise with features like dark web monitoring, public records monitoring, and identity theft recovery.

On the other hand, if you're concerned about your children, consider looking for identity protection that offers features for children. Most identity theft protection services in our guide provide features specifically for children, like Aura's hate speech monitoring or IdentityForce's Childwatch, which includes social media monitoring and Child Credit Activity Monitoring.

Even if you can't find a perfect plan that aligns with your needs, some protection is better than none. Most services also offer a free trial, so you can test them before buying. Look for a service with security tools you'll actually use. You may even choose a service for superficial reasons (like a layout or color scheme you prefer). If one service inspires you to be more proactive about protecting your information, that's a selling point.

Identity theft protection cost

The monthly cost of the identity protection services on this list ranges from $12 to $29.95 for their individual plans, though you can find services with prices outside this range on either end. Some of these services will offer family plans at a discounted rate.

Protecting your identity and other sensitive personal information is like protecting your home against fire. Most houses have fire prevention measures baked into their design, including fire-resistant materials, landscaping precautions, and fire hydrant access. You should have early detection and alert systems like smoke, heat, or flame detectors and suppression systems like fire extinguishers and sprinklers. Hopefully, you observe basic fire safety protocols like storing flammable materials properly and not leaving open flames unattended. Finally, you should have fire insurance to protect yourself financially.

None of those measures guarantees your house won't catch fire, but collectively, they mitigate the risk and extent of fire damage. Similarly, identity theft protection doesn't guarantee your personal information will remain secure, but it reduces the likelihood you'll experience the worst outcomes of having your identity stolen.

Like fire protection, identity theft protection isn't a single measure but an array of complementary measures designed to safeguard your personal information.

Types of identity theft protection

Standard features offered by identity theft protection companies generally fit into one of the following three categories:

  • Monitoring and alerts — Given how quickly identity thieves put stolen data to ill use, early detection and warning are critical to minimizing damage. Identity theft detection companies monitor your personal information for suspicious activity and notify you when something is amiss. What you get varies among companies and plans but usually includes monitoring of credit reports, social security numbers, property and court records, and more.
  • Security tools — While security measures aren't foolproof, your data is less vulnerable with some of the features that identity theft protection services offer. This includes tools like antivirus and malware protection, a virtual private network (VPN) for safe browsing, and password management.
  • Recovery — When your personal information has been compromised, identity theft protection can help you limit further damage by freezing your credit and exposed accounts. It can also help you recover your identity and cover related expenses, though it's unlikely to reimburse direct losses resulting from fraud.

Identity theft protection and credit monitoring

One identity protection feature to prioritize is reporting from all three major credit bureaus ; many entry-level plans only monitor one bureau, leaving room for suspicious activity to slip through unnoticed. You should also look for a service that gets audited regularly by independent security experts and deletes your information when you cancel your subscription (rather than holding onto it indefinitely).

How to report identity theft

If you suspect your identity has been stolen, your first action should be to freeze your credit reports to prevent the thief from applying for credit in your name. It's free and won't damage your credit. You can always unfreeze your reports later when the dust settles.

Your next steps to reporting identity theft depend on the nature of the identity theft and any fraud that may have already occurred:

  • File an identity theft report: IdentityTheft.gov is a Federal Trade Commission program that will help you create a recovery plan and generate an identity theft report that you can use later as documentation. You can file a report over the phone at 877-438-4338, though you won't receive that identity theft report.
  • Report the fraud to involved companies: Notify any banks, credit card issuers, or other companies involved in your identity theft case. The sooner you do this, the better. If you don't report within a certain timeframe, you could be liable for any debts incurred.
  • Notify the credit bureaus: Call at least one of the main credit bureaus to let them know your identity has been stolen. The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires credit bureaus to notify the others, and you'll receive a 90-day initial fraud alert , which means creditors have to take reasonable steps to verify the identity of anyone applying for credit under your name. Later, with an identity theft report, you can extend the fraud alert to seven years.
  • Contact law enforcement: Depending on the situation, you may want to file a police report, especially if you know who stole your identity. Some creditors may also require you to file a report with law enforcement.

If your Social Security number has been compromised, and you continue to have issues with identity theft, you may be eligible to get a new Social Security number . However, the requirements for a new Social Security number are high. You need to have been repeatedly targeted by identity thieves or in situations of harassment, abuse, or life endangerment. You'll need to contact your local Social Security office and arrange an in-person appointment.

How to prevent identity theft

While an identity protection service will make it harder for hackers and identity thieves to use your identity, Eva Velasquez, founder and CEO of the Identity Theft Resource Center, says that "hiring a service does not mean you can or should abdicate all responsibility for good identity and cyber hygiene." She says that many financial organizations may refuse to reimburse victims if they determine the victims didn't take sufficient care of their credentials and accounts.

Because identity theft is often a crime of opportunity, taking steps to reduce the risk of identity theft can go a long way toward preventing it entirely. You can do a lot to protect your personal information by practicing good data hygiene and staying vigilant about how your information is used and distributed. Simple steps like using strong passwords and antivirus software, securing your mail, and regularly reviewing account statements for suspicious activity will help you prevent and detect identity theft.

You can also look into various products beyond identity theft protection to prevent identity theft. You ask the credit bureaus to  freeze your credit  or place a fraud alert on your  credit reports , preventing identity thieves from borrowing money using your credit. These are free services offered by credit bureaus.

Those practices, combined with well-rounded identity theft protection, will significantly reduce the risk of having your personal information compromised.

Compare the best identity theft protection services

Best overall: norton 360 with lifelock select.

Cost:  $17.99 monthly or $179.99 annually

LifeLock is an identity theft protection service operated by Norton, one of the leading brands in cybersecurity. Unfortunately, LifeLock falls short compared to the other products included in this guide. However, the service gains a lot of value when paired with Norton 360, Norton's cybersecurity protection plan.

Norton 360 with LifeLock offers three plans: Standard, Advantage, and Ultimate Plus. The Standard plan offers the most value for its price and a sizable first-year discount. However, for more serious identity protection, it may be worth upgrading to one of the advanced plans.

You can read our LifeLock review here.

Best for complete coverage: IdentityForce UltraSecure+Credit

Cost:  $29.95 monthly or $299.50 annually

Ultra Secure+Credit is a product of TransUnion, but the +Credit plan also covers Experian and Equifax. It offers broad monitoring capability, including social media accounts, mobile device scanning, and dark web data analysis. It can also alert you of suspicious activity in your banking and investment accounts, in addition to credit-related fraud alerts.

On top of monitoring, Ultra Secure+Credit also offers cybersecurity features such as an online vault for storing sensitive digital documents and a VPN. Ultra Secure+Credit also offers an entry-level plan with most of the same features apart from credit monitoring, which is a good fit for anyone who already has that base covered.

While standard pricing is $29.95 a month, you can rummage around online for IdentityForce discounts. In the past, we've found lower prices by Googling "IdentityForce discount."

You can find our IdentityForce review here.

Best for value: IDShield 3 Bureau Individual Plan

Cost:  Starting at $14.95/month

IDShield offers comparable protection to Ultra Secure+Credit at a lower price if you're paying monthly. You'll get all the essentials like three-bureau credit monitoring, alerts, and various cybersecurity and device protection tools. The few features IDShield lacks (like junk mail removal) aren't essential, so going without them is a reasonable tradeoff if cost is a priority.

One negative of IDShield is that it tends to get lower marks for its interface; if that deters you from using the security features, then whatever you save in monthly fees is nullified. IDShield is a well-rounded plan, but you should test it out with the 30-day free trial.

You can find our IDShield review here.

Best for families: Aura – All-In-One ID Theft Protection

Cost:  $15 monthly or $144 annually

Aura provides fewer monitoring services than Ultra Secure+Credit and IDShield — it doesn't include social media, for example. It still offers well-rounded protection with monitoring of all three credit bureaus and the standard security tools, as well as email aliases to reduce spam and exposure to data breaches.

Aura All-In-One shines brightest with its couple and family plans, which provide the same protections for additional members (children or adults) at a heavily discounted cost per person. Aura's family plan also offers parental controls for mobile devices.

You can find our Aura review here.

Best for flexibility: Identity Guard

Cost: $8.99 to $29.99 monthly for individuals, $14.99 to $39.99 monthly for families

Owned by Aura, Identity Guard has three core plans: Value, Total, and Ultra. With a family version for each of these tiers, Identity Guard has six plans overall. Even without the annual discounts applied, Identity Guard's Value plan is the cheapest service on this list. Its more expensive plans are still competitively priced compared to other services on this list, though you'll get a much better deal if you commit to an annual plan.

One thing to note is that Identity Guard reserves its White Glove fraud resolution service for its Ultra plan, significantly reducing the utility of the Value and Total plans.

You can find our Identity Guard review here.

Best for basic coverage: PrivacyGuard Identity Protection

Cost: $9.99 per month

PrivacyGuard has some gaps in its identity theft protection . Notably, its credit monitoring feature is a completely separate plan from its identity theft coverage unless you purchase the most expensive bundle. However, we're just recommending the identity protection service alone, as you can fill its credit monitoring gap using other tools that are available for free.

PrivacyGuard provides many services that are harder to replicate without paying, like dark web scanning and public records monitoring at lower prices than its competitors. You'll also get tools to secure your browser and keyboard. PrivacyGuard also provides bank account and credit card monitoring, which are surprisingly scarce features among identity protection services.

You can find our PrivacyGuard review here.

We interviewed identity theft experts to inform our picks for the best identity protection services. These answers have been edited for concision. Here's what they had to say:

Is it worth it?

Eva Velasquez, CEO and president of the Identity Theft Resource Center:

Paid identity protection services can have value for individuals and families that have the financial means to pay for the services. These services can take some of the leg work out of monitoring your identity and the recovery process should an identity crime occur. I often use the analogy of hiring a pet groomer or grooming my dog myself. I can bathe and groom my dog for "free," but I do have to consider the cost of the shampoo, tools, water, and my time versus hiring someone to do it for me. Both are legitimate ways to meet the need but depend on my personal preference.

Before you purchase, make sure that you don't already have this benefit available to you. Some homeowners or renters insurance plans have riders that provide this coverage. Some employers offer these services as an employee benefit for free or at a discount. Some membership organizations you already belong to may also offer this as a benefit at a reduced cost.

Jeanne Kelly, credit coach and founder of The Kelly Group:

Absolutely. It is crucial to recognize that even if you are cautious about sharing your personal information, it is still stored in various databases, such as those of financial institutions, schools, and medical offices. Therefore, having identity theft protection ensures that you are promptly alerted in case of any issues and provides professional assistance in restoring your identity.

Paul Kim, associate editor of credit scores at Business Insider:

Identity protection can be a nice thing to have for peace of mind. However, most people don't need to spring for the fanciest, most expensive plan out there. Some of the cheaper plans, plus a little vigilance on your part, will often do the trick.

How do I determine the level of identity protection I need?

Ask yourself the following questions: How many people do I intend to cover? What are the ages of the individuals needing services? Do they have access to, and can they make effective use of digital platforms? How digitally engaged are they? Make sure you purchase coverage that meets your individual needs.

For example, if you purchase a family plan with features including cyberbullying monitoring, is that something you currently need? Are your children of an age that they are engaged online, and this feature is helpful? If you have plans available through an employee benefits program or insurance policy, ask your benefits administrator or insurance broker for assistance in determining the level of coverage that is most suitable for you.

Kelly:

Conduct thorough research to understand the available options. It is not sufficient to rely solely on receiving alerts. It is essential to find an identity theft protection service that not only notifies you but also offers robust support in resolving identity theft issues. Think of it as having an alarm system that also sends help when triggered. Look for services that provide the expertise of private investigators to assist you throughout the identity restoration process.

When shopping for identity protection, you should think about how much of a risk identity theft poses. Obviously, everyone can be targeted, but some people are at higher risk. Certain states have higher rates of identity theft than others. Additionally, people who were victims of identity theft are more likely to be targeted than those who have never had their identities stolen.

What are the most important identity theft protection features?

Transparency. This is an individual choice. The important features are going to vary based on the individual. However, a service that is transparent about what it covers and what it does not is key. Make sure you read all the information to understand what is covered, how the service is provided, and the limitations of the service, if any. Read the terms of any insurance plans carefully and ensure you understand what losses are actually covered and what your duty of care or other obligations are to seek reimbursement for losses.

One crucial feature is the ability to grant power of attorney or authorization for someone else to handle the intricate process of restoring your identity. Dealing with identity theft can be incredibly time-consuming, often requiring hundreds of hours. By having experts handle the work on your behalf, you can save valuable time and ensure that the restoration process is handled effectively. It is crucial to proactively obtain identity theft protection before any issues arise.

Two features I look out for are dark web monitoring and court records monitoring because it's difficult to replicate these yourself. If you're looking for basic identity protection that may not offer every type of monitoring, ensure that the service will at least monitor the dark web and court records.

What makes an identity theft protection service good?

In addition to my response above, also read consumer reviews and look at third-party accreditation sites such as the Better Business Bureau. Reading reviews will allow you to determine if there is a pattern of behavior that demonstrates poor customer experience. While no company is going to be perfect, seeing how they resolve customer complaints and issues will be useful in making your determination to do business with them.

A good identity theft protection service should monitor multiple aspects of your identity, including your social security number, driver's license, passport ID, medical card, social media accounts, and address changes with the postal service. Remember, identity theft encompasses more than just credit-related fraud. For instance, if someone gains access to your medical ID or driver's license number, they can exploit it to receive medical services or cash checks under your identity. Therefore, ensure that the service you choose monitors these essential areas. Additionally, in the event of an identity theft incident, make sure the service provides comprehensive support for identity restoration.

The identity protection services I pay particular attention to will offer solutions for the before, during, and after of identity theft. So, it'll offer features that protect your identity before any theft occurs, like cybersecurity measures and VPNs. The identity protection service will also provide identity monitoring to alert you when identity theft occurs. Lastly, a good identity protection service will have restoration experts who will guide you through the process of recovering your identity. Ideally, they'll do most of the work for you.

How we rate identity theft protection services

We rate services on a scale from one to five stars, with five being the highest. We apply these ratings to the overall service and the individual plans it offers.

Provided features (45%)

Most identity theft protection services will boast a long list of features that they provide. You will likely never notice some of these features running in the background, such as home title monitoring. Others, you'll be able to achieve for free elsewhere, such as credit freezes .

When we look at a service's features, we pay attention to particular features that make or break a protection service. We also look at any unique features that a service provides, making it stand out from other services.

Fraud resolution (20%)

Identity monitoring matters little if a service doesn't also provide tools to help you recover your identity . That's why it's so important that your identity theft protection service has some form of fraud resolution. Many services also offer lost wallet protection, which assists you in making all the necessary cancellations and replacements that come with losing your wallet or having it stolen.

Ideally, a service will provide a fraud resolution expert dedicated to your profile if dealing with a stolen identity. This person will help you navigate the process of recovering your identity and assets. They'll also help you contact the three major credit bureaus and any other involved parties to report identity theft .

It's also important to ensure that your identity theft protection service has some form of identity insurance that will help you cover any monetary losses due to fraud.

Dark web and court records monitoring (10%)

While some features that identity theft protection services perform can be done on your own or found in other services, dark web monitoring and court records monitoring are particularly hard to find elsewhere.

Dark web monitoring scans the dark web (which you likely do not know how to access) to see if anyone is selling your personal information. Court records monitoring scans public records for your information in case anyone has given your information in their criminal case.

Credit monitoring capabilities (5%)

Credit monitoring is a cornerstone of all identity theft protection services, alerting you of any changes to your credit report. Any unexpected updates in your credit report, like a new line of credit , are likely signs of identity theft.

While the presence of credit monitoring capabilities is important in securing your identity, we've deprioritized it in our ratings. This is because you can find free credit monitoring services that will provide you with the same monitoring and credit reports that you'd pay for with some of these services. You can also request a  free credit report weekly from each of the three credit bureaus.

You can find our list of the best credit monitoring services here.

Unique features (10%)

The truth of identity protection is that most services are very similar to each other in what they offer. What distinguishes certain services are standouts that catch our eye.

For example, PrivacyGuard identity theft protection service includes a credit score simulator, which will give you a rough estimate of how your credit score will change with certain actions, such as a new loan. More cybersecurity-focused services, will include a VPN, secured document storage, and anti-malware protection.

Some services that offer family plans will also have parental features, such as social media monitoring. Some services will also monitor your children's online activity for cyberbullying or hate speech. Other plans, such as Identity Guard , feature an optimized mobile experience, providing users with peace of mind while on the go.

Price of service (45%)

Tiered plans (35%)

Ultimately, many identity theft protection services offer very similar features. Because so many services often perform very similar functions, the main distinguishing factor between these services is how much they cost. Many services will spread their array of features across different plans that get progressively more expensive the more protection it offers.

For example, many services will include credit monitoring for one bureau in their basic tier and reserve three-bureau monitoring for their premium tier. Other services may give you dark web monitoring in the basic tier but withhold court records monitoring for higher tiers.

We prefer services that include their entire catalog of features in one overarching plan, like Aura identity theft protection. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that tiered services are bad. If you only need to reduce the risk of identity theft to a certain level, there's no need to pay a premium price when the basic plan will suffice.

Group plans (10%)

Family plans and couples plans will give you and your loved ones the same level of protection for a discounted price. These services, such as those offered by IdentityIQ , also come with family-specific features tailored to monitoring your children's identity and online activity.

Customer support (10%)

While price and features are the two most important factors we use to judge an identity theft protection service, we also recognize these services as businesses that need to be responsive to their customers.

When we talk about customer support, we're looking aspects like cancellation policies, annual membership discounts, and free trials. We also look at a business's Better Business Bureau score to evaluate how they respond to customer complaints.

We also look to see if there are any necessary qualifications to enroll in a service. Some credit cards have identity theft protection  that are only available to their cardholders, such as American Express CreditSecure. Another example is Complete ID, which is only available to Costco members.

What to know about identity theft protection service ratings

Our system for rating identity theft protection services balances the price of the service with the features that the service provides. It also acknowledges that these services are businesses that must be responsive to customers.

While we can analyze these services on a tangible, quantifiable level, the best identity theft protection service is one that you'll actually use. A service may not have the most features, but if that service inspires you to be more proactive about protecting your information, that's a selling point. The next step is finding out how to get identity theft protection  that works for you.

Included in our guide on the best identity theft protection services is our expert panel, consisting of experts in identity theft protection and credit. Eva Velasquez, CEO of the Identity Theft Resource Center and one of the members of our expert panel, recommends considering several questions about your specific situation. You should consider how many people you're covering, their ages, and how digitally engaged they are. "Make sure you purchase coverage that meets your individual needs," Velasquez says.

Identity theft protection services can protect you from fraud that can cost you thousands of dollars.  If your identity is stolen, you can lose money and time and may find it really difficult to obtain loans, credit cards, and other financial products.

Identity theft services can help with the financial costs associated with identity theft incidents. It can also help you report the crime and may even catch it earlier to reduce the amount of damage that identity theft can inflict.

Child identity theft can damage your child's financial future. Aura has a comprehensive family plan that allow parents to protect their children's identity and monitor their online activity. Aura's family plan covers five adults and unlimited children.

All the identity protection services above will apply to all demographics. That said, it might be worth your time to look into LifeLock, which offers a sizable discount to AARP members for their first year.

The best identity theft protection service depends on what you're looking for in identity protection. That said, Norton 360 with LifeLock is the best overall identity theft protection service for its cybersecurity functions and identity protection. It's also on the more expensive side of this list, so consider other options if you want a cheaper service.

Opening Statements in Trump’s Criminal Trial: Five Takeaways

Prosecutors signaled a sweeping case and Donald J. Trump’s lawyers began their assault on witnesses’ credibility. The judge seems intent on expediting the first trial of an American president.

Monday marked another key moment in the criminal trial of Donald J. Trump: opening statements, during which the former president listened quietly to the prosecution’s allegations of crimes, and the defense’s counterargument that he was a simple man, wrongly accused.

The jury that will decide Mr. Trump’s case concentrated intently on the statements, which began the presentation of what will be weeks of testimony and other evidence, all in a tense courtroom in Lower Manhattan.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee once more, Mr. Trump, 77, is charged with falsifying 34 business records in an attempt to cover up a payment to a porn star, Stormy Daniels, in the days before the 2016 election. Ms. Daniels, who may testify, says that she and Mr. Trump had a sexual encounter in 2006, a claim the former president denies.

Mr. Trump has also denied the 34 felony charges, calling them orchestrated by Democrats; if convicted, the former president could face probation or up to four years in prison.

Here are five takeaways from Mr. Trump’s fifth day on trial:

The prosecution has a big story to tell.

The charges faced by Mr. Trump may sound bland — “falsifying business records” doesn’t really set the heart racing — but the prosecution made clear on Monday that it plans on painting a much broader picture.

Matthew Colangelo, a prosecutor, laid out in his opening statement a tale that touched on tabloid journalism , tawdry affairs and covertly recorded phone calls . Jurors will likely be told about events inside fancy hotel rooms, Trump Tower and even the Oval Office. And the stakes? The presidency.

All that suggests that the case will keep jurors wide-awake during the six or so weeks it is projected to take. Indeed, when asked if they wanted paper and pens to take notes, more than half of the people in the jury box (12 jurors and six alternates) raised their hands.

Who Are Key Players in the Trump Manhattan Criminal Trial?

The first criminal trial of former President Donald J. Trump is underway. Take a closer look at central figures related to the case.

The defense wants to destroy prosecution witnesses.

Mr. Trump’s lead lawyer, Todd Blanche, used his opening statement to cast Mr. Trump’s actions leading to this case as run-of-the-mill business, and said that Mr. Trump is defending himself at trial, just as “any of us would do.”

He argued that the use of a nondisclosure agreement — the document Ms. Daniels signed after receiving the payment — was typical among the wealthy and the famous and “nothing illegal.” He continued that there was nothing wrong with trying to influence an election, adding: “It’s called democracy.”

Mr. Blanche also attacked Mr. Cohen, a former lawyer and fixer for Mr. Trump. He said Mr. Cohen, who pleaded guilty to federal campaign finance crimes in 2018, was a “criminal” who “can’t be trusted.” He added that Ms. Daniels was “biased” against Mr. Trump and made a living off her story about the sexual encounter.

He called the heart of the prosecution case just “34 pieces of paper” that don’t involve Mr. Trump.

Trump was muted during the abbreviated day in court.

On Mr. Trump’s way into the courtroom on Monday, he addressed reporters for about three minutes and blasted a range of perceived enemies, including New York’s attorney general, Letitia James, and the judge in a recent civil fraud case that resulted in a $454 million judgment against him.

But Mr. Trump’s behavior during opening statements reflected that he understood the gravity of the moment.

Mr. Trump made no outbursts during the prosecution’s opening statement, although he occasionally showed displeasure: He shook his head slightly at arguments that he orchestrated a scheme to corrupt the presidential election and then more strenuously when prosecutors said he was guilty of felonies.

During his own side’s opening statement, Mr. Trump sat largely motionless and expressionless watching his lawyer Mr. Blanche. Mr. Trump’s behavior was muted compared with his volatility during past Manhattan court appearances.

But at the conclusion of the trial day, Mr. Trump took his preferred spot in front of a television camera in the hallway, and spoke for more than nine minutes, attacking the prosecutor’s case — once again — as unfair.

David Pecker used to live on celebrity news. Now, he is the news.

Prosecutors’ first witness was David Pecker, the longtime publisher of The National Enquirer . He ambled to the stand and promptly gave a lesson in the ways of tabloid journalism, including the purchasing of articles — anything more than $10,000, he had to approve — and the significance of putting a famous face right out front.

“The only thing that was important is the cover of a magazine,” Mr. Pecker testified.

In about 30 minutes of testimony, Mr. Pecker also laid out trade secrets on sourcing, saying hotel workers and limo drivers could be a font of information on the rich and famous.

He seemed at ease: laughing at a prosecutor’s jokes, and sometimes directly addressing the jury just a few feet away.

We’re moving right along.

Over the past five trial days, the judge overseeing the case, Juan M. Merchan, has shown that he is eager to keep this trial on schedule. He seems serious about keeping his word to the jurors that the trial will last six weeks.

On Monday, truncated by a juror’s dental emergency and the Passover holiday, he decided to start with the first witness — Mr. Pecker — despite having only half an hour left on his schedule.

On Tuesday, the court will first consider a prosecution motion to hold Mr. Trump in contempt over recent comments that they say violated a gag order meant to keep him from attacking participants in the trial and their families.

Then, Mr. Pecker will continue on the stand, probably diving deeper into the “catch-and-kill” scheme used to buy up — and cover up — unflattering stories, a central element of the prosecution’s narrative.

Court will end early again, at 2 p.m., for further observance of Passover and then will have its weekly Wednesday break.

But there is little indication that as the weeks pass, Justice Merchan will let the pace slacken.

Prosecutors at hush money trial say Trump led 'porn star payoff' scheme to 'corrupt' 2016 election

Donald Trump "orchestrated a criminal scheme to corrupt the 2016 presidential election," a prosecutor told jurors Monday during opening statements in the first criminal trial of a former president.

"This case is about a criminal conspiracy and a cover-up,” prosecutor Matthew Colangelo told the 12-person jury and six alternates. Trump, he said, conspired to corrupt the 2016 presidential election by scheming with his lawyer Michael Cohen and David Pecker, who was the publisher of the National Enquirer at the time.

“Then, he covered up that criminal conspiracy by lying in his New York business records over and over and over again,” Colangelo said.

Pecker was called as the prosecution's first witness following opening statements from both sides. Trump's lawyer Todd Blanche told the jury his client was not guilty because no crime was committed.

Trump, who had his eyes closed for periods during the morning proceedings, seemed much more engaged when his old ally and friend Pecker was taking the stand. Trump craned his neck when Pecker walked in, almost as if to see whether Pecker would meet his eye. Trump also poked at his attorney Emil Bove and whispered something as Pecker, 72, got situated, and he leaned forward attentively when he began testifying.

Pecker did not get to his relationship with Trump by the time the court day ended. The proceedings ended early because a juror had an emergency dental appointment.

Trump told reporters afterward that the case was "unfair" and launched into an attack against Cohen, who's expected to be called as witness.

"When are they going to look at all the lies that Cohen did in the last trial? He got caught lying in the last trial. Pure lying," Trump said, apparently referring to Cohen's statement in the civil fraud case against Trump that he lied under oath during part of his 2018 guilty plea. "When are they going to look at that?” Trump said.

The comments are likely to come up at a hearing Tuesday morning, when Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office is scheduled to argue that Trump has repeatedly violated a partial gag order barring him from making "public statements about known or reasonably foreseeable witnesses concerning their potential participation in the investigation or in this criminal proceeding."

Prosecutors have said Cohen and Pecker, the longtime former publisher of the Enquirer, are central figures in the alleged scheme to bury claims from women who said they had had affairs with Trump.

Colangelo told the jurors they will hear about a 2015 meeting at Trump Tower with Trump, Cohen and Pecker. Both Cohen and Pecker had specific roles to play in the scheme, Colangelo said. “Cohen’s job really was to take care of problems for the defendant,” he said. “He was Trump’s fixer.” Pecker, meanwhile, would act as “the eyes and ears” for Trump and would let him and Cohen know about any allegations that could hurt his campaign.

The DA alleges the three conspired to hide “damaging information from the voting public.” That included allegations from a former Playboy model named Karen McDougal who said she had a 10-month sexual relationship with Trump that ended in April 2007. Pecker’s AMI agreed to pay her $150,000 in a deal to essentially buy her silence — a practice that was referred to as “catch and kill.” Trump has denied McDougal's claims.

The situation took on a greater sense of urgency for Trump in October 2016. That's when The Washington Post published the " Access Hollywood " tape, which caught Trump on a hot mic saying he could grope women without their consent because "when you're a star, they let you do it."

Judge Juan Merchan barred the DA from playing the tape for the jury for fear it would be too prejudicial, but he did allow prosecutors to use a transcript of Trump's remarks.

Colangelo said the impact of the tape was “immediate and explosive.”

“The defendant and his campaign were concerned that it would irrevocably damage him with female voters,” he said, and "the campaign went into immediate damage control mode."

It was around that time that the Enquirer heard that adult film actress Stormy Daniels was interested in coming forward with a claim that she had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006. Trump was "adamant" he didn't want that claim, which he denies, to become public for fear it would be "devastating" to his campaign, Colangelo said.

Cohen then struck a deal to buy Daniels' silence for $130,000, Colangelo said.

"It was election fraud, pure and simple," Colangelo said, adding “We’ll never know, and it doesn’t matter, if this conspiracy was a difference maker in the close election.”

Colangelo said the Trump Organization, Trump’s company, couldn’t cut Cohen a check with the memo “reimbursement for porn star payoff” so "they agreed to cook the books" and make it look like the reimbursement was income.

"The defendant said in his business records that he was paying Cohen for legal services pursuant to a retainer agreement. But, those were lies. There was no retainer agreement," Colangelo said.

“It was instead what they thought was a clever way to pay Cohen back without being too obvious about it,” he said. But what they did was a crime, Colangelo said. “Donald Trump is guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree,” he concluded.

Trump's attorney Blanche countered in his opening statement that his client hasn’t committed any crimes. “The story you just heard, you will learn, is not true,” he said. "President Trump is innocent. President Trump did not commit any crimes."

He said the only thing Trump did was sign checks for legal services rendered by his lawyer.

“The invoice is processed, somebody at Trump Tower generated a check, the check was ultimately signed, and there was a record in the ledger,” Blanche said. “He’s the only signatory on his personal checking account, which is why he signed the check.

"So what on Earth is a crime? What’s a crime, of what I just described?” Blanche said. "None of this is a crime," he said, adding that nondisclosure agreements like the one Daniels signed are legal.

As for the election interference argument, Blanche said, “I have a spoiler alert: There’s nothing wrong with trying to influence an election. It’s called democracy.”

In a preview of his trial strategy, Blanche also attacked Daniels' and Cohen's character and credibility. He accused Daniels, whom he described as "extremely biased," of trying to "extort" Trump, a word that the judge ordered stricken from the record. Blanche then said what Daniels had been threatening to do by going public with her allegation was "sinister" and "damaging to [Trump] and damaging to his family.”

Blanche also said Daniels' testimony, while salacious, doesn't matter because she doesn't know anything about how Cohen was repaid.

The bulk of Blanche's attacks were reserved for Cohen, who pleaded guilty in 2018 to numerous crimes, including some that he said he carried out on Trump's behalf.

“Michael Cohen was obsessed with President Trump. He’s obsessed with President Trump, even to this day,” Blanche said, calling him a "convicted felon" and a "convicted liar."

“He has talked extensively about his desire to see President Trump go to prison,” Blanche said, including in public on Sunday.

He told the jurors that if they listen to the evidence, they'll return "a very swift not guilty verdict."

Cohen said in a statement afterward, “The facts will come out at the time of trial that contradicts Todd Blanche’s mischaracterizations of me.”

Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records related to the hush money payment to Daniels. Trump, who has pleaded not guilty , could face up to four years in prison if he is convicted.

On his way into the courtroom Monday morning, he told reporters: “It’s a very, very sad day in America. I can tell you that.”

The day got off to a rough start for Trump, with Merchan, the judge, ruling that if he winds up taking the stand in his own defense, prosecutors can cross-examine him about another New York judge's finding that he and his business committed "persistent" fraud and violated a gag order, juries' finding him civilly responsible for sexual abuse and defamation in the E. Jean Carroll cases and a settlement in a case that found he used his now- shuttered foundation to improperly further his campaign in the 2016 election. Trump's attorneys had argued that all of those topics should be out of bounds.

Trump didn't show concern — he sat with his eyes closed through much of Merchan's ruling. He briefly opened his eyes when the jury was brought in for the judge's instructions and then closed them again.

Bragg was sitting in the front row of the courtroom ahead of opening statements.

Cohen, Daniels and McDougal are also expected to testify during the trial, which is estimated to take six weeks.

The jury consists of seven men and five women. The final day of jury selection, Friday, was particularly intense , as some potential jurors broke down in tears and said they were too anxious to be seated. They were excused. A man also set himself on fire outside the courthouse.

Trial proceedings Tuesday will be abbreviated, ending at 2 p.m. ET because of the Passover holiday.
