If you’re looking to create a slideshow on your iPhone, you might be able to do that right now without downloading another app. That’s because the native iPhone Photos app has a built-in slideshow maker . Many iPhone users aren’t aware of this, but once you learn how to use it it’s easy.

With Photos, you can make a slideshow and change the speed, add themes, and even add music from your music library. If you need a simple slideshow right now without advanced features, you can make your slideshow in the Photos app.

3. Google Photos

Many iPhone users use Google Photos as it makes it easy to back up your files to your Google Drive account. While iCloud is great, sometimes having photos on your Google account too makes you feel sure you won’t lose any. You can even create locked folders in Google Photos . Transferring photos from your iPhone to Google also makes it easy to download pictures on your computer.

Google Photos also makes a quick slideshow with your imported photos. You can do so in the app. Once you make a slideshow, you can broadcast it to a Chromecast or a PC.

While the Google Photos app does make an easy slideshow, there aren’t any extra features. For example, you can’t add music or edit the photos after you create a slideshow. You also can’t change the transition time. Some users also have a hard time finding this feature, as Google Photos calls it a ’Movie’ and not a slideshow. However, If you want a simple slideshow you can broadcast on a Chrome-supported device, consider using Google Photos.

Create a slideshow for your photos and videos on iphone.

Thanks to the iPhone's built-in Photos app , you can make a slideshow and have your photos and videos play one after another without manual interaction. You can choose a custom background music track, theme, and even the speed of the slideshow.

The Photos app only lets you play your content as a slideshow; you can't save these slideshows to play at a later time on another device. However, as a workaround, you could record a video of your iPhone's screen while it plays and save it, or stream it to your Apple TV using AirPlay .

To start making your multimedia slideshow , launch the Photos app on your iPhone .

In the Photos app, select the photos and videos you'd like to include in your slideshow.

When you've selected your photos and videos, in the bottom-left corner of your screen, tap the share icon.

In the share menu, tap "Slideshow."

Your iPhone will automatically create and play a slideshow containing your photos and videos.

To customize this slideshow, then tap on the slideshow and then select "Options" in the bottom-right corner.

On the "Slideshow Options" page, choose the item you'd like to change for your slideshow. Your options are:

• Theme : Use this option to change your slideshow's theme.
• Music : Change your slideshow's background music with this option. You can load music from the Music app as well.
• Repeat : To play your slideshow in a loop, enable this option.
• Slider : Use this slider to change your slideshow's playback speed. Dragging the slider to the left decreases the speed, while dragging it to the right increases the speed.

When you've specified custom options, save your settings by tapping "Done" in the top-right corner.

And that's it. Enjoy the customized slideshow of your favorite photos and videos!

Create a presentation in Keynote on iPhone

To create a new presentation, you first choose a theme to use as a starting point. Themes use coordinated fonts and colors for a unified look and often include placeholders that you can replace with your own content.

Create a presentation from a theme

Note: If you’d like the ability to format table and chart data using the conventions of another language, choose the language before choosing a theme. See Format a presentation for another language .

In the theme chooser, tap the category names at the top of the screen to view different themes, then tap a theme to open it.

Some themes aren’t downloaded to your device until you choose them or open a presentation that uses one. If your connection is slow or you’re offline when this happens, placeholder images and slide backgrounds in the presentation may appear at a lower resolution until you’re online again or the theme finishes downloading.

Each slide layout offers a different arrangement of text and images that you use as a starting point for your content.

Whenever I'm looking to create video content for Instagram Reels, TikToks, or YouTube, CapCut is my first choice without a second thought. It's super easy to use compared to the clunky, intimidating video editing apps I've dealt with in the past. Those apps often had me hitting delete before I could even get the hang of them. However, CapCut feels like it was made for anyone. It seamlessly fits into my video editing workflow, whether on my iPhone, desktop, or web browser.

With CapCut, I can effortlessly cut, trim, and piece together clips in just the right aspect ratios for any social media platform. No wonder the app has climbed into the top three in the photo and video category. The app was made with mobile phone users in mind. Editing is so simple you only need to use your thumb. Add slick transitions, sync music, and sprinkle in subtitles. The customization options feel endless, and I've been amazed by the final cut. Hands down, Capcut is the best free video editing app I've stumbled upon.

11. Threads, An Instagram App

The idea of adding another social media app to the mix might seem overwhelming. However, many are seeking refuge in less toxic spaces than X , formerly known as Twitter. Threads is emerging as a promising haven and has even taken the top spot in the social networking category. A Meta product, Threads has mainly been onboarding Instagram users, inviting them to engage in more fluid and relevant conversations and share beyond just images and Reels. 

It isn't all great, though. A noticeable pinch felt by its users is the impact Threads seems to have on their Instagram engagement. Some are concerned that their content isn't reaching as many followers as before, hinting at a possible algorithm shake-up. Despite this, Threads' overall vibe is similar to that of a friendly town hall meeting where everyone's voice matters. Threads is attempting to reset how we engage online, offering a platform centered around community and conversation.

WhatsApp is the second most downloaded free iOS app in the social networking category. The app isn't just popular in the States -- there's a high chance your international friends use it as well. Still, WhatsApp is my personal go-to messaging app. It's virtually replaced my phone, messaging, and work correspondence. It syncs with the desktop app and makes it super simple to send files, images, and videos, make phone and video calls, and even send voice notes. I used to have an Android phone and it was easy enough to move my WhatsApp chats from Android to my iPhone .

WhatsApp's simplicity and user-friendliness are unmatched, making it a faithful companion for travelers worldwide. Even though it is widely popular, WhatsApp has been criticized for privacy concerns , particularly regarding its data-sharing policies with its parent company, Meta. This has made some users wary, considering the trade-offs between convenience and privacy.

9. YouTube: Watch, Listen, Stream

YouTube is my go-to whenever I have free time or am looking for a quick solution, travel ideas, sports highlights, documentaries, or just to enjoy some Shorts. Thanks to its endless stream of diverse content, the YouTube app sits front and center on my iPhone's home screen. The massive content library can keep one entertained for eternity, so it's no wonder it's second in the photo and video category.

The video streaming service isn't without its flaws, though. It's a mixed bag of privacy concerns, inappropriate content, the unpredictability of what's new, issues with video lengths, and copyright troubles. Not to mention navigating the emotional rollercoaster with creators or trying to keep up with the constant deluge of videos.

Despite these challenges, YouTube has changed over the years, becoming a sophisticated platform that really gets what its viewers are into. It personalizes your feed, mixing content with new discoveries tailored just for you. The app also has YoutTube Shorts, giving both TikTok and Instagram Reels a run for their money.

8. Facebook

Facebook often gets described as the digital town square for internet users of a certain age, abuzz with political debates, cooky theories, or the oversharing of personal drama. Even so, it remains a frequently used app to check in on the lives of family and friends. Facebook is a great platform for finding specific interest groups, keeping up with favorite pages, scoping out local deals in the marketplace, and discovering new and interesting content. It's a great way to connect from the digital to the real world.

Despite its position at number three in the social networking category, Facebook has its drawbacks. The Gmail app allows me to search for attachments and keywords to access important info easily. Even though I've been using Gmail for quite some time, there are many tips and tricks to unlock even more Gmail features . The app is highly rated for its reliability, security, and user-friendly design. If you haven't downloaded it yet, what are you waiting for?

Instagram has changed a lot since I first started using it, evolving from a simple photo-sharing app to a more expressive outlet for individuals to share personal snapshots of their lives via Reels, Stories, and direct messages. Beyond personal use, Instagram is also an app for creators and businesses to showcase their products and services and engage with audiences creatively. Despite many users who want to keep Instagram how it used to be instead of trying to compete with the likes of TikTok , the app still takes the top spot in the photo and video category.

Google also features Discover, a way to stay up-to-date with topics personalized to your interests. The app just keeps on getting better and better and is a must-download for those who are ever-curious.

OpenAI's ChatGPT is all the rage these days, and it isn't a surprise that it's ranked first in the productivity category. When I'm having my morning coffee, it's a great tool to rattle off voice notes or post-shower thoughts to kickstart a brainstorming session. The app is different from its web browser counterpart, with the ability to chat in voice mode. It's surprisingly fluid and makes for a great companion—not to be confused with the movie "Her." The voice does, however, sound very similar to Scarlett Johansson's.

The free app uses GPT 3.5, a version that is less than the current GPT 4, so there are limitations to consider. If you are already a paid subscriber to ChatGPT, you can link your account and access all the special features, like getting up-to-date replies from online searches and uploading photos and files for ChatGPT to consider or scan and read when crafting a response. The sky's the limit with ChatGPT, and the app allows me to get that extra boost of creativity, better structure my thoughts, and make plans. It's an essential app that every iPhone owner should have .

How an iPhone Powered by Google’s Gemini AI Might Work

Apple and Google are reportedly in cahoots to integrate features from Google's Gemini generative AI service into iOS . Bloomberg broke the news , which was later corroborated by The New York Times . If the deal pans out, it will be a huge collaboration between two tech giants who have long duked it out in the hardware and software space.

It also raises lots of questions about how Gemini would function on Apple’s devices—and which company would remain in control. Neither Apple nor Google have publicly addressed the news, and neither company responded to requests for comment before this article was published.

There's also the possibility that the deal could fall through, seeing as how the hype around such a collaboration is drumming up some unwanted attention. “In the past, this leak would have killed the deal,” says Michael Gartenberg, a technology analyst and former director of marketing at Apple. “The first rule of doing a deal with Apple is don’t talk about Apple.”

But in this case, Gartenberg says, it’s highly likely the deal will in fact pan out. For one, Apple needs it to happen. When all the most breathless tech innovations over the past year and a half have been related to AI, Apple needs to prove that it’s in the game, too. Not to mention that Google has announced it is bringing its on-device AI service, Gemini Nano, to the Pixel 8 very soon, a signal that the mobile AI explosion is set to take off.

Apple has languished behind the other big gen-AI players like OpenAI , Microsoft, and Google. The company has big plans for its own internal large language models, but whatever tools it's cooking up are not yet ready to be released into the world. That slowness, Gartenberg says, puts Apple in a position of looking like it has been caught off guard by the broader generative AI movement.

“The competition is fierce,” says Patrick Moorhead, founder and principal analyst of Moor Insights & Strategy. “You've got all of Silicon Valley competing for this hardcore talent, and Apple missed this one.”

There's a ticking clock putting pressure on the company, too. WWDC , Apple's big software development conference and product announcement showcase that usually takes place in June, is looming. As it approaches, those simmering expectations about the company's generative AI strategy will reach a boil.

“An Apple response of just focusing on face computers or adding more widgets is going to feel fairly hollow,” Gartenberg says, because when it comes to AI, “Apple really needs to have something it can show by June 2024. There is a deadline here for people looking at Apple and saying, what is your story?”

Apple clearly feels that pressure. It recently scuttled its self-driving car plans to refocus those resources on its internal generative AI efforts. And now it's partnering with Google to bring new AI capabilities to its most popular device.

So, assuming the deal does go through, what might Gemini look like on the iPhone?

First off, Gartenberg says it will likely manifest with a distinctly un-Apple label.

“It would probably be something Apple couldn't hide under its own brand,” he says. “Perhaps it would be a setting where you could select your assistant, where it could be Siri classic or Siri the sequel. And if I'm Google, I'm going to hold out for some kind of branding on this.”

He points out that the default search engine on iOS now is Google Search, and it isn't rebranded as an Apple service there. Any AI features powered by Gemini would probably warrant the same flashing neon lights, especially at a time when Google is very motivated to show off its AI chops.

Apple will also likely keep focus on its own ambitions. Siri, the occasionally helpful and much maligned voice assistant, has long lagged behind other digital assistants. Don’t call it a glow up, but Apple will likely be looking to Gemini-infused AI advancements to breathe new life into its floundering digital helper.

“I think that they will double down on Siri and be like, ‘This is the Siri we had envisioned when we introduced it 10 years ago,’” Moorhead says. “Essentially, it’s going to do the same thing, with a higher degree of value. It’ll be something that actually works.”

This juiced-up Super Siri could become a fully fledged chatbot, with integrated conversational AI that can stare deep into your life . It’s likely to power real-time language translations, however fraught that may prove . Apple could also use Gemini to power advanced photo and video editing techniques, such as swapping out backgrounds, combining multiple photos to get everyone's face just right, or using AI-powered editing tools to manipulate photos more wholly.

Image creation capabilities will probably be on the table, like something generated with Dall-E or Midjourney . Moorhead suggests Apple could even incorporate this kind of feature into Siri, such as using a voice command to ask the digital assistant to “make that background blue” or to “make this picture a sunny day,” and then see the results right there in your photo roll.

One big feature that Moorhead says is expected on AI-powered phones across the board—not just iPhones, but Android phones too—is enhanced AI snapshots of your life. The idea here is that on-device AI could make a record of everything happening on your phone throughout the day, then compile all that information and keep it at the ready to be recalled later.

“The runaway hit is going to be snapshots,” Moorhead says. “For people like me who don't remember anything and have to write everything down, this is going to be great.”

These are, of course, all features that companies like Google and Samsung have touted before, or are at least already working on. But Apple is Apple, and while it is often not the first company to bring new innovations to market, it has a way of making its execution of an idea more enticing or easier to use—even when it's forced to incorporate another company's technology.

“There's an opportunity here for Apple to talk about how the new generation of artificial intelligence meets Apple and Siri, and produces something better,” Gartenberg says. “It's not going to be enough for them to just deliver the basic generative AI stuff. They've got to be able to say they've taken the Google stuff and are actually going beyond that.”

Once she tagged in, Cargill ran wild like a house afire with impressive offense including a Stinger Splash and a Michinoku Driver. Cargill made her WWE SmackDown debut when she officially signed with the brand on the March 29 broadcast. Cargill’s AEW exit dealt a crushing blow to AEW and its talented-yet-struggling women’s division, similar to Cody’s departure from the promotion during WrestleMania season in 2022 and CM Punk’s exit in 2023.

AEW is currently struggling to build identities for its high-priced free agents , while WWE—more often than not—has made bigger stars out of its free agent signings. Jade Cargill is very early in her wrestling journey, and even earlier in her WWE journey. But the promotion is all in on the former TBS champion, who continues to receive superstar entrances and is making her WrestleMania debut in a plum spot alongside top star Bianca Belair and fellow free agent Naomi. The trio challenged Damage CTRL, who are currently part of WWE’s Women’s World Title storyline.

Whether Cargill is embraced as a top babyface she is currently being pushed as, or the top heel that she’s already proven she could be in AEW, Jade is simply too big of a star to fail. This theory was put on full display during Friday’s WrestleMania media day, where WWE PR was forced to cut off Cargill’s enormous line of eager wresting media personalities (including myself) waiting for their chance to speak with her.

Cargill has an enviable list of connections in the sports and entertainment space (her first pro wrestling match was alongside Shaq), but even without it, Cargill’s look and charisma alone make her a perfect fit for WWE. WWE crowds are far nicer and more forgiving than they were to stars perceived as “favorites” of WWE officials. Cargill will benefit from that change in fan philosophy, and if she needs to pivot into a heel role, this generation of WWE leadership has proven it is more than capable of doing so in a moment’s notice through The Rock’s abrupt, and brilliant, heel turn.

Most importantly, Jade Cargill is a winner. When Cargill was in AEW, her entire run was defined by a two-year undefeated streak punctuated by a 508-day run as TBS champion. Cargill graduated from Jacksonville University, where she obtained a bachelor’s all while being named Atlantic Sun Preseason First Team in her senior year. Cargill then went on to obtain a Master’s degree in child psychology Cargill is owner of the 2023 World Professional Fastpitch champions the Texas Smoke.

All she does is win.

Under any circumstance, Jade Cargill is inevitable. Fortunately, WWE realizes this, and Cargill—a client of Endeavor—is set to become one of WWE’s biggest stars who will almost certainly leverage a successful wrestling career into a movies and television similar to John Cena, The Rock and Batista.

The total solar eclipse is just three days away — and it’s sure to amaze and delight the millions who see it.

Everyone in the Lower 48 states will be able to view at least a partial solar eclipse, assuming cloud-free skies .

To savor the eclipse, you don’t need special equipment. Even if you can’t get your hands on eclipse glasses , there are old school, low-tech ways to see it. If you’re crafty and canny, the eclipse can still be a memorable experience.

2024 total solar eclipse

Safety first

The first rule of enjoying the eclipse is to avoid looking directly at the sun without eye protection. Even brief glances can cause permanent damage.

The only exception to this rule is for lucky spectators in the path of totality during the few minutes of the total eclipse, when the sun is fully blocked by the moon.

For those witnessing the partial solar eclipse, even when most of the sun’s surface is blocked, the remaining, visible crescent is still intensely bright and cannot be safely viewed without eye protection.

But, if you don’t have eye protection, here are some safe ways to experience the partial eclipse through indirect means:

Make a pinhole projector

A way around looking directly the sun is to make your own eclipse projector using a cereal box. It’s a safe and terrific way to capture the eclipse action.

Clear the kitchen table and find the craft scissors. In addition to the cereal box, you’ll need a piece of aluminum foil, tape and a small nail or pushpin.

First, eat your Froot Loops — or whatever toasted grain you prefer — and keep the box. On a white piece of paper or white cardboard, trace the bottom of the box. Then, clip out the traced rectangle from the paper and put it in the bottom of the opened box. That’s your screen that images of the eclipse will project onto.

Cut out two squares (1.5 inches should suffice) on the lid of the box and then tape the lid back together. For one square, cover the hole in foil and tape it down. Gently put a pushpin or small nail hole through it, as that is the lens that the sun’s light will pass through. The smaller the hole, the sharper the projected image.

When using your personal box theater, turn away from the sun — and let the sun’s rays shine through the tiny pin hole. Look through the other hole in the lid to see the eclipse action — during the eclipse you’ll see the moon biting a chunk from the sun.

Other kinds of small boxes — such as shoe boxes or small package boxes — work well, too. And your kids can decorate them for fun.

Looking to the trees

If you’re not inclined to make a projector box, you can also view the partial phases of the eclipse in the shadows of trees and plants.

The small gaps in between leaves, branches and pine needles act as miniature projectors. When light passes through, a small image of the sun is cast onto the ground. As the partial eclipse progresses, you’ll see the small circles evolve into sickle-shaped crescents, eventually waning to a sliver.

You may consider holding a white piece of paper or poster board beneath a tree or plant to make it easier to spot the shadows.

Gadgets and fingers

Leaves aren’t special — they just happen to be good at producing tiny projections. But realistically, any hole that’s about a quarter inch wide, give or take, will do the trick. That means you could even parade around outside with your pasta colander, cheese grater or serving spoon with holes in it and look at its shadow. Place white paper or poster board on the ground to see the projection more clearly.

You could also just hold your fingers out and crisscross them to make for half a dozen or so small openings between. Just extend your fingers on both hands as if you’re trying to make a W , and then overlap them.

Simple, yet elegant.
