How to Keep Your Pets Safe During the Solar Eclipse

T he solar eclipse set to cross North America on Monday, April 8, has humans aflutter with anticipation, but the phenomenon, and even more so the crowds it attracts, could be disorienting and anxiety-inducing for pets.

During solar eclipses, when the sky briefly turns dark, dogs may cower, birds stop flying and grow quiet, and nocturnal creatures emerge.

But the bigger concerns for pets, veterinarians tell TIME, are the anticipated mass gatherings. Millions are expected to travel and attend eclipse viewings that will likely provoke strong emotions in humans, which could unsettle animals.

Jerry Klein, chief veterinary officer of the American Kennel Club, tells TIME that veterinarians are “more concerned” with the impact of human behavior and activity on pets during the event “rather than actually what the eclipse is going to do to the animals.”

It’s important for pet owners to plan ahead—think about where you are going to be, the best place for your pet to be, and then prepare to make them safe and comfortable—Rena Carlson, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association, says.

“Make sure that wherever your pet is or your animals are, their needs are met,” Carlson advises.

Here are 10 tips from experts about how best you can protect your pets during the solar eclipse.

Read More : How to Safely Watch the Total Eclipse

Don’t bring pets to large gatherings

Veterinarians tell TIME that their main advice is to avoid bringing pets to eclipse viewing events with big crowds, potentially loud noises, and excitable humans that could stress the animal.

“You really need to think about all the crowds, all the people, all the noise, and that’s the biggest concern I have with the pets. Honestly, they’re going to be reacting to our excitement and all the commotion that’s happening during the eclipse, rather than the eclipse itself,” Carlson notes.

“Most animals are going to be unphased” by the physical phenomenon, the veterinarian adds, explaining that what they will react to most is human behavior.

Keep pets inside

Experts say the best thing to do is to keep your pets inside, at home, to avoid unnecessary stress: “Really that is the best advice, just keep them inside,” Carlson says.

Klein says dogs “might not be as excited about this phenomenon as we are,” but they take their cues from humans because of our closely interviewed behaviors and actions.

“I would say try to keep things as regular as possible, and if they're in their own environment, they feel more safe and secure,” Klein says.

Try and ensure your pets don’t stare at the sun

Looking directly at the sun can be harmful to animals, as it is to humans, but experts say pet owners shouldn’t worry during the eclipse because animals do not naturally look at the sun—and we shouldn’t encourage them to.

“We shouldn’t force our pets to do something that’s potentially dangerous or personally they don’t want to do,” Klein says. “That’s enough to potentially harm their vision, and you don’t want to do that.”

However, experts say it’s not a good idea, and unnecessary, to put eclipse glasses on your pet.

“Don’t try to put glasses on them, that’s going to be more annoying and they’re going to wonder what the heck’s going on,” Carlson says. “My dog would be the one that would paw them off their head and chew them up and eat half of them.”

Experts reassure pet owners that animals don’t look at the sun naturally, so even if pets are outside they will probably be fine, but if you’re concerned they may look up by accident, keep them inside to minimize the risk.

You can also take an added measure to reduce pets’ stress and exposure to the sun by drawing curtains or moving cat climbing posts or other items away from windows during the eclipse, Leah Ellis, a veterinarian at the Prince Edward Island Humane Society in Canada, tells TIME.

If you leave home, be prepared for long travel

During the last total solar eclipse in the U.S. in 2017, Carlson, who lives in southern Idaho, says that a normal two-hour drive took up to 10 hours due to traffic. Transportation officials this year have warned drivers to brace for heavy traffic and plan extra time getting to and from eclipse destinations, with other 2017 eclipse-viewers also reporting extended travel times.

The veterinarian warns pet owners, if they are traveling with their animals, to be prepared for much longer than expected trips, bring extra food and water, and plan stops to exercise your pet.

If you’ve left a pet at home, “be mindful of the fact that you may not get home as quickly as you thought you would” and “have that contingency plan” that your pets’ needs are met by others in your absence.

If you’re in public, keep your pet on a leash

If you do bring your pet, such as a dog, out to an event, keep them on a close leash, as canines may panic, run away under stress, and could get lost in a large crowd, experts say.

“Changes in the environment may trigger stress, confusion, or fear in your dog. Concerned owners should keep an eye on their dog during the eclipse, checking for signs of worry so they can provide their dog with reassurance,” Bill Lambert, a dog health expert at The Kennel Club in the U.K., tells TIME in an emailed statement. “Sometimes stressed or fearful dogs may try to run away, so do ensure your property is secure and your dog has a collar with an ID tag, and their microchip details are up to date.”

Watch out for and respond to stress signs

Signs of stress for dogs include panting, pacing, and changes in facial expressions, such as eyes bulging to show eye whites, experts say. They warn pet owners to recognize these signs early, and if you notice them, remove your animal from the stress trigger and soothe them in the best way you know how.

If you’re at a large event, it could be wise to bring your dog back to your car or another quieter place to hang out and ensure they don’t get frantic, Ellis says.

“When animals get frantic, that’s when accidents happen and they get into a fight or flight mode and end up just trying to run away from what they’re scared of,” the veterinarian continues. “The sooner that you notice those more subtle signs, and try to de-escalate from there, you’re generally going to have better results and hopefully a better outcome.”

“The best thing to do is just to avoid these very stressful situations in general,” she adds.

If needed, provide distractions

If your pet is stressed, the Toronto Humane Society recommended distracting your animal with toys or treats. You could absorb your canine with a training session with their favorite treats, the American Kennel Club suggested. If your pet is particularly prone to anxiety, talk to your vet in advance about management strategies, which could include anti-anxiety medications, The Ohio State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine proposed.

Be prepared your pet may be hungry or tired

Animals are creatures of habit who follow visual cues, so some pets may ask for dinner a lot earlier than normal because they think it’s nighttime, Ashley Travis, spokesperson for the Prince Edward Island Humane Society, says. Pets also may become a little bit more lethargic because they think it’s time to go to sleep.

Minimize risks around outdoor animals

The reactions of larger outside creatures, such as horses or farm animals, will depend on the personality of the animal and their circumstances during the eclipse, Isabelle Louge, clinical assistant professor of food animal field services at Texas A&M University, tells TIME. Some animals may spook, be more on edge, and potentially group together, while others might not react at all.

The veterinarian’s advice for people who own large animals is to avoid working with them during the eclipse for personal safety.

“If you have a 1,000-pound horse and they get distraught by the event or they get spooked, and move very rapidly or suddenly, especially if they can’t see you, they might be prone to injuring you even if they don’t intend to,” Louge says.

The veterinarian recommends keeping larger outside animals in their most comfortable environment during the event.

“Just keep them in an area they’re very familiar with that doesn’t have any big hazards, so they’re not going to do things like step in pot holes or fall down ravines during that time, because the daylight change will impede their ability to see,” Louge says.

Avoid traveling during the eclipse with larger animals, but if you have to, you could provide a light source in a trailer, for instance, to avoid injuries, Louge adds. Inspect animals after the eclipse to make sure they’re not injured and if so, seek care.

Stock up on supplies

Some experts suggested making sure you have enough food, water, medications, and any other items you need for your animal in advance of the eclipse, especially if you’re traveling, as large crowds are expected that could potentially put a strain on supplies in popular destinations.

While it’s always best to be prepared, though, experts say not to worry about any kind of pandemic-level shortages: “I don’t perceive this being that extreme,” Klein says.

As pets become much-loved family members, the way we say goodbye has intensified

A woman holds a white scruffy dog up to her face, church stained glass windows in background

Nadia Nobili gently lifts her miniature poodle out of the pet stroller for a walk along the Sydney Harbour foreshore.

"We're best friends," she says.

It's one week until her dog Coccola will be euthanased, and Ms Nobili is making the most of their precious time left together.

Ms Nobili originally adopted Coccola, named after an Italian term of endearment, for her father on the advice of his geriatrician. After the death of her parents, it was just the two of them.

"I'm single, divorced, no children, and she filled that role of a partner. Coccola and I are soulmates."

With very little eyesight and her hearing failing, 17-year-old Coccola's decline in quality of life prompted Ms Nobili to make the hard decision to say goodbye to her closest companion.

Ms Nobili generously allowed Compass to follow her and Coccola during their final week together.

"I know what I'm going to see ... [it's] whether I'll be prepared for it or not," Ms Nobili said.

"Even though I've been a nurse all these years, when it comes to somebody that you love so desperately, it's never easy.

"But in saying that, I think we should also have that opportunity of being euthanased at a stage where our quality of life isn't right.

"It's my last act of love for her."

'No different to losing a human'

As our pets have become bigger parts of our lives, treated as much-loved members of the family, letting them go has become much harder.

"When people say losing a dog is no different to losing a human, that is absolutely true," celebrity dog behaviourist Laura V says.

"So, it's important that we as a society start to evolve in our thinking of pet loss and understand that there are many of us that see our dog as family."

A woman smiles with a stuffed cat and dog on a table in front of her.

When Georgina Morrison's beloved Rhodesian ridgeback Vegas was diagnosed with two tumours, it was a devastating blow.

She created a bucket list of Vegas's favourite things, ticking them off during the months that followed.

"That was really cathartic for us, because it wasn't just about his treatment — ticking off all those things really helped us with our goodbyes because we knew we'd done everything that we could."

After enjoying a cheeseburger and some whipped cream, a specialist palliative care vet administered the drugs to put Vegas to sleep in the backyard.

Ms Morrison says adjusting to life without Vegas has been "just unbearable".

A woman and a dog with backs to camera look out onto a mountain range.

Not everyone understood her grief. One friend asked if it could be linked to the death of her father years ago.

"Why can't this grief just be about my dog? Why does it have to be associated or attached to a human death?"

Ms Morrison estimates it took about eight months to feel like she was OK again.

Farewelling Coccola

Ms Nobili also chose home euthanasia for Coccola.

In the lead-up, she took Coccola to visit friends for some final pats and farewells.

A woman holds a white scruffy dog in front of a church.

The religious Ms Nobili also took Coccola to church for a blessing from Reverend Bill Crews at the altar.

"Coccola is not much longer for this world," Reverend Crews told the congregation.

"May God bless you, darling, and may peace and all that's good shine on you, and shine on your mum."

A woman lies next to a white scruffy dog on the couch, petting her.

Coccola spent her last morning in October last year sleeping on the recliner.

"I just spent time caressing her until the vet came," Ms Nobili recalls.

After the vet administered a pre-medication, Ms Nobili held her beloved Coccola for the last time.

"I just held her and felt her spirit, she felt mine, and then he gave [the drug] to her and she just went so peacefully."

A dog rests his head on a woman's arm.

Memorialising a pet

In the weeks that followed, Ms Nobili had several items, such as a candleholder, made to memorialise Coccola.

"One of the most beautiful things I've had made of Coccola is this glass candleholder and those silvery bubbly streaks in there are her ashes."

Laura V says doing this can help keep the connection going.

She herself has a couple of plush toys that resemble pets that have died recently.

"During my grieving process, having their ashes in there has helped me," she says.

"There will be some people that think this is absolute madness. Everyone's different and this was the right thing for me to do."

A candle, photo of a dog and other mementos on a table.

She cautions that people should only buy what they can afford.

"It can be expensive, and this can lead to huge guilt in that. People think, you know, if I really love my dog as much as I say I do, then I will buy this and this and this, and not everyone can do that."

Ms Nobili estimates she has spent about $800 on items memorialising Coccola, and for her it is well worth it.

"I never felt any pressure because I felt it was my send-off for her. When I walk around the house, it gives me great pleasure looking at everything."

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Solar eclipse, how to keep pets safe during the solar eclipse, whether at home or on the road.

A dog tries on eclipse sunglasses in London in 2015. Experts say pets don't need eclipse sunglasses — in fact, quite the opposite.

The solar eclipse is a can't-miss event for millions of Americans, whether or not they'll be viewing it from the path of totality . But what does it mean for our many furry friends?

Dr. Rena Carlson, the president of the American Veterinary Medical Association, got a firsthand view of how animals responded to the total eclipse in 2017.

Her veterinary practice, in Pocatello, Idaho, closed down for several minutes so staff members could watch the eclipse outside, along with many of their dogs.

What you need to know to watch Monday's total solar eclipse

What you need to know to watch Monday's total solar eclipse

"Honestly, the animals were probably more anxious because of our excitement than anything else," she remembers.

Carlson says while certain dogs may exhibit some of the behaviors they normally do when it starts to get dark outside, the eclipse is unlikely to directly affect pets in a significant way.

But things like crowds and traffic can, which is why experts recommend leaving animals at home to be safe.

Carlson says there are steps that their humans should take to look out for them on such a hectic day — especially if anyone involved is traveling .

Thinking of taking a last-minute drive to see the eclipse? Here's what to know

Thinking of taking a last-minute drive to see the eclipse? Here's what to know

"My bigger worry is there was so much traffic and so many people coming through our area that a drive [that] typically would take us two hours took over eight to 10 hours," Carlson says. "So if you're traveling with your dog, please be prepared for long wait times."

Here are some expert tips for protecting your pet during the eclipse, whether they're right in the thick of it or waiting for you at home.

Consider: Should Fido come or stay?

The first step is to decide whether your pet even needs to come with you for outdoor eclipse viewing, whether it's close to home or out of town.

Most of the time, Carlson says, the answer is no.

"It's quite an amazing phenomenon for us to experience," she explains. "And so that can be pretty stressful when dogs are with large crowds and a lot of noise, they don't quite understand the excitement. They're going to be much more nervous about 'What's going on?' and 'How should I react?' "

She says the same guidance applies to all pets, even though cats and birds are not as likely to be traveling in the first place.

"They're going to be better off at home, in their normal environment," she adds.

Prepare for commotion and contingencies if you're traveling

If you do decide to bring your dog, plan ahead for what to do if things get overwhelming.

That includes bringing extra food and water in case the journey takes longer than expected, and getting them out of the car for walks or bathroom breaks if you're stuck in traffic.

Once you're at your destination, Carlson says, "always be thinking about" how to keep your pet safe and comfortable. Keep them on their leash, make sure they're hydrated and pay attention to their body language.

For April's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'OMG' might mean just driving across town

For April's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'OMG' might mean just driving across town

"You know your pets' behaviors better than anybody else," she says. "And so watch for any kind of a change in how they're reacting."

Signs of distress may include panting, pacing and whining. If you notice any of these behaviors, Carlson advises removing your pet from the situation as soon as possible, because "the more worked up they become, the harder it is to calm them down."

"I know there's a lot of activity going on and there's a lot of things to see, and excitement," she adds. "But if you have ... a pet with you, make sure you're really paying attention to them and watching their signs of stress so that you can respond appropriately."

How to make the most of next week's solar eclipse

How to make the most of next week's solar eclipse

If you're traveling sans pets, make sure there's someone back home you can call to feed and let them out while you're away, especially if there's a chance you may get home later than normal.

The ASPCA recommends keeping pets busy with a food puzzle toy or other form of enrichment while you're away. But Carlson says not to worry more than usual about leaving your pet alone that day.

"They're not going to be worried about the eclipse happening," she says. "They're just going to think it's a normal day where you're gone."

Don't waste your eclipse glasses on your pet

Any human who plans to look directly at the eclipse needs to wear special sunglasses , except for those few brief minutes when the moon is fully blocking the sun. Pets, however, do not.

"They're outside every day and don't look up at the sun, so there's no reason to think they're going to do that at this point," Carlson explains.

In fact, trying to put glasses on your pet — even for a photo opp — could likely do more harm than good, Carlson says. It could stress dogs, leading them to paw them off and even chew them up.

The physical sensations of watching a total solar eclipse

Why watching the 2024 total solar eclipse might change your life

"Keep the glasses for yourself, because we're the ones that are going to be looking up at the sun and need that protection for our eyes," she says. "They're just going to be looking around like they normally do every day and feeding off of your emotions and your excitement."

Dr. Lori Bierbrier, the senior medical director of ASPCA Community Medicine, told NPR over email that while it's unlikely that animals will look right at the sun, their eyes could be damaged if they do so long enough.

Symptoms of eye damage include squinting, closing one eye or pawing at their eyes, redness, inflammation or cloudiness and watery eyes or discharge. She recommends contacting your vet as soon as you notice them.

Everything you need to know about solar eclipse glasses before April 8

Everything you need to know about solar eclipse glasses before April 8

But what about vet offices that are closed for the eclipse — as Carlson's briefly was — or hard to get to on the day of the eclipse?

Carlson says you should be aware of heavy traffic and figure out back roads you can take.

Ideally, worried pet owners could call their vet to explain the situation and get advice first. Carlson says that's just one example of why strong client-patient relationships are so important.

"Whether there's an eclipse or not," she says, "emergencies happen."

Piscataway preschoolers are drawing on their skills to help homeless dogs. Here's how

PISCATAWAY - Adorable children and adoptable dogs − what could be a better combination to bring attention to the importance of pet adoption?

Pre-K students at the school district's Children’s Corner Preschool have been using their talents to draw portraits of dogs in need of a home. The young artists have been creating their artwork based on photos from the Edison Animal Shelter.

Art teacher Paige Berkowitz initiated the project, as well as a pet food drive, to allow her students to work on their drawing skills while making a special connection with the animals waiting to be adopted."I was inspired to create this project because my students are learning about the Pet Vet theme, so one of their centers is pet adoption," she said. "I thought it would be a great idea to have them draw pictures of actual dogs in our area who need to be adopted. There are so many amazing animals right here in our county that need a loving home, so I wanted to raise awareness about that."

The art project is a way for the preschoolers to learn to draw what they see, while making a connection with the dogs at the shelter.

"My students loved drawing the dogs," said Berkowitz. "They thought all the dogs were cute and renamed them to whatever they wanted. Some students drew multiple dogs on their papers so each dog had a friend. Other students made their dogs rainbow because we have been learning about the colors of the rainbow."

Children’s Corner Principal Jennifer Sernotti said that Pet Vet is one of the school’s theme-based centers that allows students to learn about the world and their place in it. During this theme, students learn about different pets and how to take care of them.

She credited Berkowitz’s unique project for supporting the students’ learning while also working toward a wider objective.

"It’s inspiring to see our students learning the value of kindness and giving back," Sernotti said. "Even our youngest learners can help our community."

Rebekah Sterlacci, Piscataway’s supervisor of visual and performing arts, also praised Berkowitz’s work.

"I think this is an amazing way to build community connections and tap into our department's belief that art changes everything,” Sterlacci said.

Berkowitz, an animal lover who has an adopted pit bull/lab mix named Teeq, also started a pet food drive at Children’s Corner to benefit the Edison Animal Shelter. Students and families can bring in dog and cat food, treats, toys, blankets, or towels until April 12.

"I’m a huge animal lover so being able to help our local animals and animal shelter was important to me," Berkowitz said.

Berkowitz reached out to the Edison Animal Shelter because she wanted to help a local pet adoption center. The shelter gave her the photos of the dogs waiting for adoption.

And now the shelter plans to use the children's drawings on its website and social media.

"I loved this art project and am excited to have full boxes of pet food donations to give to Edison Animal Shelter," she said.

Berkowitz also hopes the project could instill in the preschoolers a lifelong love of animals and of helping others.

"I hope my students go home and tell their families about dogs and cats that need homes in our area, and I hope that they will have a passion for helping out in our community by giving back, whether it is food for animals or people in need," Berkowitz said.

Children’s Corner has expanded in recent years thanks to New Jersey Preschool Expansion Aid, and now offers free preschool at three locations, serving more than 600 3- and 4-year-olds. Classrooms are designed with learning centers that focus on literacy, blocks and puzzles, science exploration, dramatic play, music and art.

"We have a very robust preschool program in Piscataway," said Superintendent Dr. Frank Ranelli. "It sets that foundation of understanding so many areas of communication. It helps teach interaction, problem solving, teamwork, and really an understanding of socialization. Ms. Berkowitz’s unique project fits in perfectly with that mission, helping our youngest learners develop their art skills as well as empathy and a sense of community."

Solar eclipse: How will the wildlife in Southwest Florida react when the light dims?

powerpoint presentation on animals and their homes

With all the attention to the upcoming solar eclipse, it's a safe bet that humans won't be caught off-guard by the daytime darkening of the sun But what about animals?

Woodland critters without internet access may well have no idea what's going on when the moon's shadow moves over the sun on the afternoon of April 8, naturalists say. Even in Southwest Florida, where it'll be only a little more than half obscured (52% to be precise), the day may confuse wildlife.

Here's what we may be able to expect from our animal neighbors, starting at about 2:15 p.m.

Things may get quiet

"As it's getting darker some animals may stop singing like the songbirds," said Joanna Fitzgerald, director of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida's von Arx Wildlife Hospital in Naples, "because it's their instinct to be quiet in the dark if you're a daytime animal."

"So overall maybe the neighborhood will get a little bit quieter when the eclipse is occurring."

More: When is the solar eclipse in Fort Myers, Lee County? Search by ZIP code

Animals may be on the move as the eclipse darkens

Fitzgerald said some may decide it's time to return to their nests, "but nothing too drastic and luckily since it's gradual, if they're in the middle of something important like diving for fish, once they notice it's starting to get darker, they may take a spot to go roost."

Other animals who become active after dark may begin their rounds, said Fort Myers' Calusa Nature Center Naturalist Maxx Chadwick. "These changes may cause unexpected behaviors such as reptiles beginning to search for a source of heat, birds returning to their nests, or rats showing an increase in night-time activities such as foraging," he wrote in an email.

Creatures who aren't eclipse veterans may be alarmed

Consider the first-timers, Chadwick said.

"These animals likely have not experienced an eclipse before, let alone have the mental capacity to comprehend something like it.

"Just as it is with many animals experiencing a thunderstorm for the first time (they often are quite scared of the loud noises and flashing lights), we could expect an eclipse to potentially confuse animals and throw off their day-to-day activities."

More: When is the solar eclipse in Naples, Collier County? Search by ZIP code

Because Southwest Florida isn't in what's called the path of totality — the swath that becomes completely dark — the reactions likely won't be as dramatic, Chadwick notes, "but that is not to say that we will not notice any effects." Even slight environmental changes can cause changes in the way animals feel and behave, he said.

Citizen scientists may have a role to play: "Perhaps during this eclipse we can encourage people not only to check out the eclipse with their eclipse glasses, but to also try to pay attention to any wildlife around you and see if they begin to show any signs of behavioral changes," he said.

That's what the Naples Zoo will be doing, says director of animal programs, LeeAnn Rottman.

"We will be monitoring our animals for signs of stress or unusual behaviors throughout the event," Rottman said.

Goat standing in a field

Get your goat: Italian island overrun by the animals offers to give them away

Mayor makes offer after number of goats on Alicudi reaches six times human population

The mayor of a remote Italian island overrun by wild goats has offered to give the animals away to anyone willing to take one in.

Riccardo Gullo came up with the novel idea after a recent census estimated the number of goats on the five-square kilometre Alicudi, the smallest of Sicily’s Aeolian archipelago, was six times the island’s year-round population of 100.

The animals, adept at navigating Alicudi’s steep cliffs, once lived harmoniously alongside the human inhabitants and became as much of a tourist attraction as its dormant volcano.

But their number has grown so rapidly in recent years that they started to gravitate from their usual abode at the top of the island towards the inhabited area, damaging lush green vegetation, causing havoc in gardens and allotments, knocking away portions of stone walls and even wandering into people’s homes, prompting demands for a solution.

Alicudi, which is a two to three-hour boat ride from mainland Sicily, falls under the administration of the larger island of Lipari.

The “adopt a goat” initiative was deemed to be the best way of managing the issue in the most compassionate way.

“We absolutely do not want to even consider culling the animals, so we are encouraging the idea of giving them away,” said Gullo. “Anyone can make a request for a goat, it doesn’t have to be a farmer, and there are no restrictions on numbers.”

People have until 10 April to make their request. “We have already had several phone calls, including from a farmer on Vulcano island who would like to take several goats as, among other things, he produces a ricotta cheese which is much appreciated,” added Gullo. “If someone has the capacity to domesticate a goat, it could be a beautiful and more humane way to control the issue.”

Goats were first brought to Alicudi 20 years ago by, it is believed, someone who intended to breed the animals. But the plan fell by the wayside and the goats were left to their own devices. The problems caused by their growing population were first highlighted by Paolo Lo Cascio, a former councillor, in 2008.

“There needs to be a solution as the threat to the island’s vegetation is serious,” said Lo Cascio, who estimates the goat population at 800 rather than 600. “But Alicudi is a very complicated island, first you have to access it and then try to capture all the goats. There should have been an intervention 10 years ago.”

Gloria, who owns Golden Cafe Noir at Alicudi’s port, said the animals had become “unmanageable”. “They move around in packs and cause damage, there are just too many of them.” One used to come and sit under the table in her bar. “It was a bit of an attraction, but then you worried whether it might bite someone.” While she welcomed the initiative, she questioned its feasibility. Reaching the top of Alicudi, where the village is, involves a steep climb. “How will they bring the goats back down? Perhaps they would need a helicopter to transfer two or three at a time. It’s a nice proposal, but there is no logistical solution yet.”

Will my pets be safe during the April 2024 solar eclipse? What experts say.

powerpoint presentation on animals and their homes

Editor's note: An updated cloud forecast for the April 2024 total solar eclipse is in. Read the latest eclipse forecast and news as of Wednesday, April 3 .

An eclipse itself isn't dangerous for domestic animals such as dogs and cats, but experts say it's probably best to not bring pets to experience the April 2024 total solar eclipse .

Experts' biggest concern is not what’s happening in the sky but on the ground as crowds of excited and anxious people gather , said Dr. Rena Carlson, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

“Rather than the effects of the eclipse, I would be more worried about the excitement and all of the people,” she said.

Dogs especially will take their cues from their owners rather than the celestial event.

Solar eclipse warnings pile up: Watch out for danger in the sky, on the ground on April 8

Dr. Jerry Klein, chief veterinarian of the American Kennel Club, said dogs that are sensitive, that have anxiety or are strongly affected by storms are likely to pick up on the emotions of people gathering to watch the eclipse

That’s especially true for pet owners who might be traveling a long distance to see the eclipse .

“They're going to react more to our reactions, our excitement and our anxiety than the actual eclipse, ” said Carlson.

What to do if you have to bring your dog to see the April 2024 total solar eclipse

If you must take your dog with you to an eclipse viewing event , make sure they are your primary concern.

“Make sure that they’re not stressed and that you give them a time out if they need it,” Klein said.

“If you have any concerns about how your dog might react you should leave them indoors. That’s the easiest solution,” he reiterated.

For those who won’t or can’t leave their dogs at home, he gave this advice:

“Make sure they have plenty of fresh water, that they’re not overly crowded, that they’re kept on a leash and that they have a way to be recognized if they bolt off and get lost,” he said.

Carlson cautioned that pet owners need to plan for the possible aftermath of any eclipse-viewing excursions they take their pets on.

In 2017 there were massive traffic jams after that year's solar eclipse ended as thousands of people all tried to leave often narrow country roads at once. Carlson was working in Idaho at the time. Some of the best viewing in the nation was a little bit north of her clinic.

"What would have typically been a two-hour drive took some people seven and eight hours to make," she said. “You need to make sure you have extra water for them and that you can get them out to eliminate,” she said.

Some dogs bark, some don't. Cats don't care.

There's not a great deal of research on how pets respond to eclipses . But what there is seems to indicate they're not strongly affected. The most recent study was released earlier this month and was conducted during a partial eclipse on October 14, 2023. It reported behaviors in more than 200 animals, mostly dogs.

“About half of the people wrote that their dogs started barking or howling during the eclipse but half of the people said their dogs stopped barking and howling,” said Adam Hartstone-Rose, the professor of biological sciences at North Carolina State University who conducted the research and who studies animal behavior during eclipses.

The responses could simply be based on a given dog's personality, he said.

People who were farther away from the main path of the 2023 eclipse, in areas where the effect would have only been a short period of dimness, didn’t see any noticeable changes in their animals.

“The closer you were to full darkness, the greater the reaction,” he said. “But the reactions went in both directions.”

There were no reports of dogs running or scrambling around and cat owners didn't note any responses at all.

“The cats couldn’t be bothered, at least enough to give us data," Hartstone-Rose said. Then he added, "But maybe they were thinking deeply about it."

That study's sample size is too small to draw definitive conclusions from so he’s hoping to get thousands of pet owners to send in observations on April 8 as part of his Solar Eclipse Safari citizen science project.

“We need much more data,” he said.

You don't have to worry about pets' eyes in an eclipse

There’s no need to worry about your pets’ eyes during an eclipse, Carlson said.

Dogs typically only look up at an owner or if there's a treat. “They have no instinct to look up at the eclipse ," she said.

As excited as you might be about seeing the eclipse , the experts were unanimous – don’t make your dog look at it.

“They have an aversion to bright light. They will tend to not look at it unless we force them to do something that’s not beneficial to them naturally,” said Klein, who practiced as a small animal emergency veterinarian for over 35 years.

There's no need for eclipse glasses because there’s no fear of dogs harming themselves by looking at the blocked sun, he added.

Where to get free eclipse glasses: Sonic, Jeni's, Warby Parker and more giving glasses away

“I’ve never had any emergencies because of problems or lesions to eyes because of dogs staring at eclipses, he said. “Animals are too sensible to do something they can feel isn’t good for them.”

Any type of eye covering is likely to simply bother them, said Carlson. “ Glasses , or any kind of protection for their eyes, is going to be more annoying and stressful than just letting them be with their owners."
