Auburn High hires national coach of the year to lead volleyball program

Auburn High School has hired Brian Wheatley to be its new volleyball coach, according to a news release from the school system. Wheatley is the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s current National Coach of the Year.

Wheatley will be coming from Venice (Fla.) High School where he coached for 30 years. He started at Venice, a city of 27,000 just south of Sarasota on the Gulf Coast, after graduating from Auburn University in 1994. He led Venice to the playoffs in 29 of his 30 seasons. Venice has been to the state playoffs final four 13 times with six state championships. Ten of his teams have finished in the national top 20.

The coach has produced 97 players who have signed college scholarships and more than 20 have become volleyball coaches. In 2023, MaxPreps named Venice one of the Top 100 Volleyball Dynasties in America.

Wheatley has been named Florida Coach of the Year four times and was Coach of the Year for all sports in the state in 2022. He is a member of the USA Volleyball Hall of Fame, the Florida High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame and the Venice Sports Hall of Fame.

For the past two summers, he has been selected to coach college players internationally in a Global Challenge tour in Europe. He is a coach with USA Volleyball as a National Team Development Program coach, developing talent in the Olympic pipeline with some of the top college coaches in America.

“Auburn felt like the right place at the right time,” Wheatley said in the release. “I don’t think there is another high school in the country that I would have moved to besides Auburn High School. I love Venice High School. Venice has been great to my family. It is a wonderful community and a top-notch school system, but ever since I transferred to Auburn University as an undergraduate, Auburn has felt like home.

“My wife and I have dear friends in Auburn. There are churches we love in Auburn. Our daughter just graduated from Auburn University and our son is there currently. We just love the Auburn Community. It’s a cliché but we believe in Auburn and love it.

“Auburn City Schools have a reputation of academic and athletic excellence and they have shown they are willing to do what it takes to compete at the highest levels, so we are excited to come immerse ourselves here and build a program that reflects the greatness of Auburn.”

Wheatley played volleyball at Long Beach State University and San Jose State University in California, and he was an undergraduate assistant at Auburn University under coach Liz Bitzer Underwood. It was at Auburn University where Wheatley met his wife, Lisa, who has had a distinguished career as an Elementary School principal in the Sarasota County Florida School System.

Grand Canyon softball again opens NCAA Tournament against UCLA

For a third consecutive year, Grand Canyon's softball team will play UCLA in Los Angeles to open the NCAA Tournament.

The Lopes found out their fate Sunday during the softball selection show.

Last season, they pulled off one of the biggest upsets in school history with a 3-2 win at No. 2 UCLA.

But they lost the next two games after that and their season was over. They've failed to get out of the last two Los Angeles regionals.

Friday's game starts at 5:30 p.m.

GCU (48-11) is the No. 4 seed with Pac-12 champion UCLA (37-10) again No. 1. The Lopes set a season record for wins this year, breaking last year's 47-win season.

UCLA is the sixth overall seed in the national tournament. Mountain West champion San Diego State (31-18) is the No. 3 seed in the L.A. Regional and will play No. 4 and overall No. 15 Virginia Tech (39-12-1) at 3 p.m. on ESPNU on Friday.

The Lopes face a UCLA team that is on a roll. The Bruins have won their last eight games and 15 of their last 16, led by two-time Pac-12 Player of the Year Maya Brady, who is hitting .403 with 15 home runs and 61 RBIs.

GCU power hitter Ramsay Lopez, a graduate player, has 69 career home runs, which is tied with Brady for the fourth-most active Division I players.

The stunning 3-2 win over UCLA last year was short-lived, as the Lopes then lost to San Diego State and Liberty to end their season.

Garcia Tabbed for SEC Community Service Team

COLUMBIA, Mo. –  University of Missouri  baseball graduate infielder Matt Garcia was one of 14 players selected for the Southeastern Conference's Baseball Community Service Team, which was announced Wednesday by the league office.

Garcia has logged the Tigers' top total in community service hours over the past two seasons since joining the Mizzou program as a transfer from Bethune-Cookman. Most recently, he completed a mission trip to Nicaragua through Athletes in Action this past December.

A graduate student from Orlando, Florida, Garcia has volunteered with Columbia Public Schools, in addition to taking part in numerous on-campus service opportunities, including Mizzou's Tree Service project, Homecoming and Move-In Day. Last year, Garcia was named to the SEC's First-Year Academic Honor Roll and completed his bachelor's degree in general studies in December.

This season, Garcia has hit .250 while tallying the third-best RBI total (28) on the squad, despite missing 11 games due to injury. The middle infielder has excelled as one of the Tigers' top defenders as well, turning in a sparkling .977 fielding percentage with just three errors in 133 total chances.

The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams for all 21 league sponsored sports. The Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.

UP NEXT Mizzou will open its final SEC series of the regular season Thursday (May 16) evening with a 6 p.m. (CDT) contest against Mississippi State at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville.

Ryan McKenna let go by Baltimore Orioles. Here's what happens now for St. Thomas grad

Ryan McKenna, a 2015 graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover, learned Monday he was designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles. This means he was removed from the club's 40-man roster. Within seven days, the Orioles must either trade McKenna or place him on outright or unconditional release waivers.

If McKenna, 27, a fourth-round selection by the Orioles in the 2015 draft, is claimed off waivers by another club, he will be assigned to his new team's 26-man roster because he no longer has minor league options. If he clears waivers, he would be free to join another organization, or return to the Orioles' minor league system.

McKenna was called up to Baltimore on April 26. He appeared in nine games and went 3-for-8, including two solo home runs. Austin Hayes, who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list after missing three weeks with a strained calf, took McKenna's spot on the roster.

McKenna appeared in the majors with the Orioles for the fourth season. He began this season at Triple-A Norfolk , batting .244 with two homers and five RBIs before being called up to the majors.

Last year, McKenna appeared in 89 games in the regular season and had career highs in several categories, including batting average (.254), on-base percentage (.316), slugging (.677), RBIs (18), and stolen bases (five).  

The Orioles won the American League East last year with a record of 101-61, and were swept by the Texas Rangers in the American League Division Series. McKenna, who was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk in the final week of the regular season, was not on the postseason roster .

McKenna appeared in 291 games with the Orioles since he made his debut in 2021. He had eight home runs and 45 RBIs, and a batting average of .224. His first career MLB hit was a triple in 2021 against the Boston Red Sox off Nick Pivetta at Camden Yards.

A video of the NFL player's commencement speech at Benedictine College last weekend has attracted heaps of backlash on social media.

In his 20 minutes on stage at the private Catholic liberal arts school in Atchison, Kansas, Butker expressed his views against Pride Month and transgender people, among other topics, according to  USA Today .

"Not the deadly sins sort of Pride that has an entire month dedicated to it," the Georgia native said, "but the true God-centered pride that is cooperating with the holy ghost to glorify him."

Butker also took the opportunity to speak out about the coronavirus pandemic and its relation to "degenerate cultural values and media." The prospect of women choosing careers over homemaking was also under scrutiny by Butker.

"I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and a mother. I’m on this stage, and able to be the man I am, because I have a wife who leans into her vocation," Butker said.

In the speech, the Chiefs' player quoted a lyric from Taylor Swift's song "Bejeweled" while criticizing some priests for being too close to their parishioners, per  The Sporting News .

"As my teammate's girlfriend says, 'familiarity breeds contempt,'" the 28-year-old said, referring to Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce's high-profile relationship with Swift.
