OeAD Scholarship Programmes and further grants for Austria 2023/2024

The OeAD offers grants and scholarships to students and researchers from all over the world. The programmes range from grants aimed at broad target groups to more specific ones aimed at applicants from certain fields of study or regions. Below, please find an overview of open calls for incoming programmes and the direct link to the online application tool.

We kindly ask you to spread the information in your academic networks, and if applicable, at your academic institutions. 

The  Ernst Mach Grant – worldwide  invites applications from PhD students, Postgraduates, Postdocs and young lecturers from universities outside of Austria. Students and academic teaching staff from all fields of study can apply for a grant period of 1 to 9 months, extensions are not possible. 

Deadline: 01.02.2023

Undergraduate and graduate students from non-European countries (conducting a degree on Bachelor or Master level) can apply for the  Ernst Mach Grant for Studying at an Austrian University of Applied Sciences , which allows research visits of 4 to 10 months at an  Austrian University of Applied Sciences . Extensions are not possible. 

Deadline: 01.03.2023

The  Ernst Mach Follow-Up Grant  is aimed at post-doctoral researchers and lecturers from non-European developing countries, who work at higher education institutions/universities and have in the past received an OeAD scholarship. At the beginning of the grant period, at least 3 years must have passed since the last funded research visit to Austria.

Deadline 01.02.2023, 01.09.2023

The Franz Werfel Grant is intended for persons with above-average qualifications, preferably with teaching experience and employment at a university, who focus on Austrian literature. The duration of the scholarship is four to nine months; an extension to up to 18 months is possible. Persons who consumed at least 12 scholarship months can apply for the follow-up support programme.

Deadline: 01.03.2023, 15.09.2023

The  Richard Plaschka Fellowship  is open to applications from young university teachers of historical sciences with a focus on Austrian history. It enables them to work as visiting researchers at university departments and carry out research in libraries, archives or at research institutions. The fellowship is awarded for 4 to 9 months and includes follow-up measures (financial and material). 

More programmes under  Ernst Mach  for applicants from Asia:

Applications to the  Ernst Mach-Grants – ASEA-UNINET  are open to Graduates in the field of music, Postgraduates with a master degree (including master thesis), and Postdocs with a doctoral degree (or equivalent). Currently, applications from  ASEA-UNINET member universities  in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam are accepted. Depending on their type, the grants are awarded for up to 9 months to up to 36 months.

Bachelor’s and Master’s Students Eligible to Apply

ISTA welcomes students with different academic backgrounds who can bring their skills and experiences to the scientific setting.

Students with a  Bachelor’s  or  Master’s  degree in  biology , chemistry , neuroscience ,  mathematics ,  computer science ,  physics , data science and scientific computing, astronomy , earth science and related areas are encouraged to apply.

How Do I Apply?

ISTA processes applications to its PhD program once a year. To apply , you have to create an online account, which will allow you to track your application through its various stages. We do not accept applications and documents received outside of this system.

Please fill out the form using a web browser on a desktop computer. Web browsers on mobile devices (i.e. Android, iPhone, iPad, etc.) are not supported.

What Application Materials Are Required?

We ask you to upload the following documents to the application portal:

Please structure your Statement of Purpose by first addressing the general points above, and finish by addressing the following specific questions:

• An important goal of the first year in the Graduate School is to find an academic home by affiliating with a research group. Taking into account that a successful affiliation does not depend only on your own preferences, you might consider multiple options. Based on your research interests and background, which group(s) would be relevant for you, in what order, and why? Please specify up to three research groups at ISTA’
• During the first year in the Graduate School you need to complete three rotations in three research groups. Explain which groups you would choose and why. The Graduate School encourages students to consider one rotation outside of their field of expertise; should you decide to explore this option, which research group would you consider and why?
• University transcripts and diplomas  of all degree programs and all years you have attended and/or are currently enrolled in (in English and in original language)
• Contact information of 3 referees who can assess your academic and research performance

All documents have to be submitted in English and copies of university transcripts also in their original language.

What Are the Selection Criteria?

The selection committee uses a collection of indicators to evaluate the applicant’s preparedness, motivation, and potential. The following will be considered:

• undergraduate performance : overall, with a special focus on relevant field-specific courses
• reference letters  provided by professors and senior scientists: one letter from industry is acceptable, but letters from an academic background are given priority; referees are asked to address analytical capabilities, technical proficiency, ability to work independently and motivation/commitment;
• statement of purpose : the applicant’s past research experience and motivation for applying to this particular PhD program: is it a good academic fit? how does the program contribute to the candidate’s future career plans?, etc.;
• additional relevant skills  (field-specific): demonstrated in, e.g., internships and/or participation in research projects, participation in science Olympiads, programming languages, lab techniques, etc.
• transferable skills : e.g. communication skills, experience with working in teams, previous mobility and international experiences, leadership experience as demonstrated in student organizations, etc.;
• diversity : e.g. a woman in computer science/math/physics; an applicant who switched fields, etc.;

Application and Selection Timeline

The call for the 2025 PhD program will open in the second half of October 2024. The first review process will be completed in the course of February. Candidates will notified about their status by the beginning of March.

Shortlisted candidates are invited for interviews, to take place in March/April Interviews may be conducted either remote or onsite. Offer letters will go out after the interview period, and candidates can accept or decline the offer of admission by 30 April. The start of the PhD program is uniformly on 15 September.

Austria is another well-known European country where scholarships are available to study. Also, Austria Scholarships 2024 are available for international students studying full-time PhD/doctoral degree programmes in Austria. Over 500 scholarships are available at Austria’s leading schools for international students for the academic year 2024-2025, and Austria is the geographic centre of Europe. As a result, more than 102,000 international students study in Austria, on scholarships funded by the Austrian government and Austrian universities. Furthermore, many courses are exclusively taught in English. There are also several Austrian universities where you can apply and study without having to take IELTS.

Furthermore, Austria permits you to work part-time to augment your income, and you may be able to get a job in Austria by applying for Direct Jobs in Europe. So, the Austrian government pays a monthly stipend, tuition costs, accommodation and board, health insurance, and a travel allowance in terms of scholarship coverage. In addition, students in every Austria scholarship programme of the Institute of Science and Technology participate in an academic training course where they will learn about research tools, innovative abilities, and learning teaching aspects.

Furthermore, international professors would coach and advise students throughout the scholarship program’s tenure. As a result, students engaged in this fully funded scholarship scheme will rotate throughout their subject of study of interest. In addition to their thesis and research topic, students will receive teaching skill training and participate in international conferences. Austria scholarship Europe, on the other hand, offers a wide range of programmes on a wide range of themes, and graduate and master’s degree students are encouraged to apply for Austria scholarships in Europe. Eligibility Criteria

• Students must have each a Master’s or a Bachelor’s degree.
• In addition, their previous degree course GPA should have been in the top quartile in their respective disciplines.
• There is no need for the GRE or IELTS/TOEFL.
