About this program

This degree will help you take your first step on the road to becoming a doctor. Through a combination of Team-based learning, small group practical and clinical skills sessions, plus extensive clinical placements and considerable online resources, you will develop the skills, knowledge and attributes necessary to succeed as an intern. As a graduate, you will be caring and competent and have a fundamental understanding of the science of medicine.

You will develop communication skills and learn about the art and science of medicine in its wider social and ethical context. You will take part in extensive clinical placements in healthcare facilities ranging from rural settings through to the Gold Coast University Hospital and the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service. You will also develop an understanding of the importance of lifelong learning and learn how to be resourceful in seeking information and adapting to new technologies.

The Doctor of Medicine is an AQF Level 9 Masters Extended degree.

MD / PhD pathway

This pathway will allow a small number of MD students (5 to 10 students) to complete the first two years of the program before commencing two years of full time PhD work in clinical research related to a range of fields such as neuropsychiatry, pathology, neurology, primary health care, health economics, cardiology, indigenous health, medical education and medical ethics. The program will incorporate clinical/bedside teaching plus reintegration to the MD component while they are doing the PhD research project. Candidates would then recommence the normal MD program to complete Medicine 3 and Medicine 4 of the MD whilst completing the PhD part-time. Students will be eligible for PhD scholarships.

Attendance information

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) program is offered full-time, on-campus at the Gold Coast campus and the Sunshine Coast Health Institute during Phase 1, and in community and clinical placements in a variety of locations during Phases 2 and 3.

As a full-time student, you will need to be available to attend between 0700 and 1800 on Monday to Friday (Years 1 and 2) and during the clinical years (Years 3 and 4). Your attendance may be required after hours and on weekends and including public holidays.

In this program, you must maintain a full-time study load. You will be required to comply with the Doctor of Medicine Attendance policy (contact the School of Medicine and Dentistry for details).

This program starts in January and ends in December (requiring attendance between 40-43 weeks in the year).

The School of Medicine and Dentistry delivers electronic assessment via ExamSoft's Examplify application. Students enrolled in this program are required to have access to a portable computer device (laptop or tablet) that can be taken on campus to complete examination and assessment activities. This device must meet the minimum system requirements for Examplify .

The School has a small number of loan devices that may be available to students who do not have access to a personal device. Students must apply for access to loan devices in the lead up to an examination or assessment. Please note the School cannot guarantee a loan device will be available for every applicant.

The MD is offered full time, on-campus at Gold Coast campus and the PhD component is offered full-time for the first two years of study and part-time during the completion of years 3 and 4 of the MD .

Managing study interruptions

Leave of absence: Students will require approval from the Dean of Medicine to take a leave of absence.

Readmission: A student who has discontinued enrolment in the MD program and who is not on an approved leave of absence is required to seek approval for readmission to the program from the Dean of Medicine or nominee.

Student Income Support

To be classed as a full-time student, you are required to enrol in a minimum number of credit points each standard study period. The minimum credit points for full-time enrolment in this program is 30 credit points.

Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 are deemed standard study periods. As Trimester 3 is a non-standard study period, continuing students moving from one year to the next will not be required to study during this trimester to be eligible for student income support.

Domestic students who commence in Trimester 3 may be eligible for student income support from the onset of study provided they are enrolled full-time in this study period.

Work-integrated learning

Work-integrated learning activities (professional placements) integrate theoretical learning with its application in the workplace. The inclusion of work-integrated learning activities in the degree program demonstrates Griffith's commitment to preparing its graduates for success in their working life.

In this program you will spend time in the work/professional environment undertaking unpaid placements at various locations. This will increase from an average of one to 20 hours per week, over a maximum of 42 weeks in Years 1 and 2; to an average of 30 hours per week over a maximum of 43 weeks per year, in Years 3 and 4 (2844 hours). Placements may be at a community organisation, general practice or hospital each week of your degree and may be outside of the Brisbane metropolitan/Gold Coast area including northern New South Wales and (by negotiation) interstate or overseas.

Additional work-integrated learning opportunities are available through the clinical research facilities for students undertaking the PhD component.

My career opportunities

You will be prepared for multiple careers, including in specialist clinical practice, primary care medicine, rural medical practice, medical administration, medical research and medical education.

Graduates of this program will normally be eligible for limited registration and will receive full registration by Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) upon successful completion of a subsequent one-year internship in the Australian hospital system.

After completing at least one further year of residency in the Australian hospital system, graduates will usually be eligible to start postgraduate specialty training in the clinical environment.

Completion of MD / PhD pathway will prepare graduates for a research career in clinical medicine, as well as postgraduate training and University teaching positions.

Program accreditation

The graduate entry medical program at Griffith University is accredited by the Australian Medical Council .

Professional recognition

The Medical Board of Australia will recognise graduates of this award from the end of 2014.

The China Scholarship Council (CSC) and Griffith University have established the "China Scholarship Council - Griffith University Joint Funding Program". CSC and Griffith collaborate on providing scholarship opportunities and placements to selected Chinese graduate students who wish to complete a PhD degree at Griffith. CSC and Griffith will jointly sponsor selected Chinese students each year to undertake Griffith's PhD program.

About scholarship

Griffith will provide tuition fee scholarships to cover the full cost of tuition for up to 48 months and Overseas Students Health Cover for 42 months, as well as other economic support, such as providing teaching assistant or research assistant positions. CSC will provide a living allowance by the Chinese Government for up to 48 months, a return international airfare, and visa application fees.

Scholarship Eligibility

Applicants must meet candidate eligibility requirements as prescribed by CSC and Griffith in accordance with their rules and policies. The favoured areas of study for this program are drug discovery, environmental studies, nanoscience, and water science; however, this program is extended to all research areas. Candidates must fulfil all relevant academic entry requirements , including the prescribed level of English language proficiency for PhD admission and scholarships at Griffith. Candidates are required to hold a bachelor degree with first-class honours or second-class honours (Division A), or a masters degree incorporating a significant research component, from a recognised institution; or equivalent. Candidates must meet the selection criteria set out by CSC.

How to apply for these scholarships

Apply to Griffith Applications must be received no later than 15 January. Apply to the China Scholarship Council Candidates who have obtained an offer letter from Griffith must submit an online application and supporting documents to CSC for funding. The deadline for application will be specified on the CSC website.

Accepting an offer Candidates who are successful in obtaining scholarship funding from CSC will forward confirmation to Griffith by the date specified in the Griffith offer letter. Candidates will be required to commence in one of the appointed  commencement intake dates below.

Key Information

The Swansea University International Postgraduate Research Excellence Scholarship (SUIPRES) is a competitively awarded scholarship scheme open to overseas PhD and Professional Doctorate applicants, who are  eligible for the international rate of tuition fees and  can demonstrate excellence in academic achievement.

Eligibility

To apply for this scholarship, applicants must:

• Be applying for an eligible PhD or Professional Doctorate programme at Swansea University. Click here for the full list of eligible courses
• Have achieved, or be expecting to achieve, a 1st class or 2:1 UK undergraduate degree (or equivalent international qualification, and/or a Distinction in a UK master's degree (or international equivalent)
• Be classed as an international student, and eligible to pay the international rate of Swansea University tuition fees

Please note that these are minimum entry requirements; excellence must be demonstrated beyond academic qualifications as part of your application for your chosen course.

• The scheme is not available to current PhD/Professional Doctorate students
• The scheme is not open for master’s level courses
• Candidates who are fully sponsored by a third party are not entitled to receive a SUIPRES scholarship

The SUIPRES Scholarship covers the difference between the International and the Home tuition fee rate for the duration of the PhD/Professional Doctorate programme.

Successful candidates will be charged fees aligned to the UK rate per year. This is currently £4,786 for 2024/25, increasing annually in line with UKRI (United Kingdom Research and Innovation) regulations, usually at a rate of 3% per year.   

The scholarship is offset against your tuition fees, and the scholarship value will be deducted from your tuition fees.

Applicants must confirm that they have sufficient funds to cover the remaining fees for the whole period of registration, as well as to cover their living costs.

Celebrating Graduate Excellence in Research, Mentorship, and Scholarship at UCF

Recognizing students and faculty for their outstanding contributions to the UCF community.

Each year, students and faculty at UCF demonstrate incredible dedication to their work. Many go above and beyond to produce high-quality research while helping others reach their potential. The College of Graduate Studies recognizes students and faculty members annually for their exceptional teaching, research, and service through the Graduate Awards for Excellence.

At the awards ceremony during Student Research Week, several graduate students were recognized for their exceptional achievements in teaching and research. Additionally, other students and faculty members were acknowledged for their academic excellence during Founders’ Day.

This year, the awards expanded to include greater recognition of the arts – an area that may not always receive the attention it deserves. The new Award for Outstanding Graduate Creative Work, spearheaded by Graduate Student Advisory Council (GSAC) member and MFA Feature Film Production student Tolulope Ogunrinde, recognizes the merit of creative scholarship and the incredible value art brings to our community.

This award aims to acknowledge and celebrate the significant creative contributions made by graduate students in various fields, including but not limited to film, visual arts, performing arts, literature, and digital media. The award also provides a platform for graduate students to showcase their talents, gain recognition for their achievements, and receive support and encouragement as they pursue their creative endeavors.

“The inspiration behind creating the Award for Outstanding Graduate Creative Work stemmed from one of my goals as a member of the Graduate Student Advisory Council, which is to promote creative works among graduate students at the university,” says Ogunrinde. “By highlighting the outstanding creative work of graduate students, I hope to inspire future generations of scholars and artists to push the boundaries of creativity and make meaningful contributions to their respective fields. I believe that by recognizing and honoring excellence in creative work, we can foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and artistic expression within our graduate community and beyond.”

The Graduate Student Advisory Council also presents the Award for Excellence by a Graduate Student Researcher. This self-nominated award recognizes outstanding graduate student-level research and creative scholarship at UCF, allows students to share their research with the UCF community, and provides an opportunity for the GSAC to acknowledge and reward exceptional students.

Award for Outstanding Graduate Creative Work – Njeri Kinuthia, College of Arts and Humanities.

Njeri Kinuthia is a graduate student in the Studio Art and Design MFA program . She is an immensely talented artist who creates multidimensional pieces representing her Kenyan heritage and feminist values. Her artistic style is multifaceted and uses various mediums, including fabric, canvas, and everyday objects. Kinuthia uses her art to raise awareness of gender and racial inequality while advocating for change. She loves incorporating bright and colorful fabrics from her hometown, and her background in fashion design enhances the visual appeal of her pieces, all while seamlessly integrating important social messages into her artwork.

Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Teaching – Hannah Bevan, College of Sciences.

Hannah Bevan is a graduate student in the Conservation Biology doctoral program . She is a graduate teaching associate in the Mammalogy Lab, where she is dedicated to creating a welcoming environment for students to learn and enjoys sharing her passion for biology. Her course focuses on the theoretical and methodological aspects of modeling species distributions through habitat suitability and connectivity analyses to inform effective conservation management decisions.

Award for Excellence by a Graduate Teaching Assistant – Mousam Hossain, College of Engineering and Computer Science.

Mousam Hossain is a doctoral student in the Computer Engineering Ph.D. program and teaches Computer Organization. As a graduate teaching assistant, she guides students on assembly language programming using the MARS simulator and Verilog coding using design and simulation tools. Besides her teaching responsibilities, she conducts research in the Computer Architecture Lab focusing on reconfigurable and evolvable hardware. Her love for computer engineering is channeled into her teaching as she helps students better understand computer organization and build a solid foundation in the subject.

Award for Excellence by a Graduate Student Researcher (Doctoral – Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities) – James Rujimora, College of Community Innovation and Education

James Rujimora is in the Counselor Education doctoral program , conducting research on the potentially traumatic experience of caring for a child with a chronic medical illness, specifically among parents and guardians. He found that raising a child with a serious diagnosis can take a major psychological toll on caregivers, leading to concerning levels of secondary traumatic stress and vicarious trauma. Now, he plans to utilize his research findings to enact meaningful change. By partnering with local organizations to develop targeted on-site interventions that provide parents and guardians with the support they desperately need during this challenging time, sharing his findings through peer-reviewed journals across multiple disciplines, and connecting with family advocacy organizations to inform caregiver-centric policies on the federal and state levels, he aims to support parents going through such struggles.

Runner Up (STEM) – Joseph Goode, Biomedical Sciences PhD, College of Medicine

Honorable Mention (STEM) – Edwin Davidson, Chemistry PhD, College of Sciences

Award for Excellence by a Graduate Student Researcher (Master’s – Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities) – Melanie Cedeño-López, College of Sciences

Melanie Cedeño-López is in the Feature Film Production MFA program. For her thesis, she produced a feature-length documentary film called “La Buena Cosecha” which explores the remarkable contributions of Latino business owners in the United States. The film’s exploration of the economic impact of Latinos in the U.S. revealed their high entrepreneurship rates, job creation, and substantial contributions to consumption and capital formation, reflecting their growing wealth. She aims to continue sharing positive stories about Latinos making a meaningful impact on society.

Joint Runner Up – (ASSH) Njeri Kinuthia, Studio Art and Design MFA, College of Arts and Humanities

Joint Runner Up (STEM) – Manisha Thenuwara, Counselor Education MA, College of Community Innovation and Education

Award for Outstanding Master’s Thesis (Engineering, Physical Science, Mathematical Sciences, and Life Sciences) – Tajnuba Hasan, College of Engineering and Computer Science

Tajnuba Hasan is from the Mechanical Engineering master’s program and mentored by Dr. Tuhin Das.

Hasan’s thesis is titled: “Control of the Spar-Buoy Based Wind Turbine Floating Platform Through Mooring Line Actuation.”

Hasan’s thesis focused on a critical challenge within the burgeoning field of offshore wind energy, specifically addressing the stability of floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) platforms in challenging ocean environments. Her research proposes a novel approach to stabilize FOWTs by concurrently designing the mooring system and control strategy. Unlike conventional methods that exclusively focus on control design, this work recognizes the interdependence between platform dynamics and mooring configuration, thereby advancing the field of renewable energy.

Award for Outstanding Master’s Thesis (Social Sciences, Humanities, Education, Business, Fine Arts, and Health Sciences) – Jason Pagan, College of Health Professions and Sciences

Jason Pagan is from the Kinesiology master’s program and mentored by Dr. Matt Stock.

Pagan’s thesis is titled: “Resistance Training Adaptations in Older Adults Exhibit Task Specificity.”

Pagan’s thesis focuses on examining how exercise and movement specificity determine the extent of improvements in strength and mobility in older adults. Adults lose muscle strength as they age, which can lead to gradual loss of mobility, chronic pain, and poor quality of life. Pagan found that strength training can help mitigate and even reverse these effects. His findings have important implications for designing senior community exercise programs when equipment access may be limited. His primary thesis manuscript is currently undergoing peer review in a top gerontology journal.

Honorable Mention – Cole Taylor, College of Arts and Humanities

Award for Outstanding Dissertation (Engineering, Physical Science, Mathematical Sciences, and Life Sciences) – Ce Zheng, College of Engineering and Computer Science

Ce Zheng is a graduate of the Computer Science doctoral program and mentored by Dr. Chen Chen.

Zheng’s thesis is titled: “Reconstructing 3D Humans from Visual Data.”

Zheng’s dissertation focuses on artificial intelligence-based solutions for human pose estimation (HPE) and human mesh recovery (HMR). At the time when Ce started his doctoral studies, the challenges posed by HPE and HMR were significant. Ce recognized the need for a more efficient and cost-effective solution, leading to the development of groundbreaking techniques for accurate 3D HE and HMR directly from images and videos. These advancements have not only eliminated the dependence on costly motion capture systems but have also significantly impacted the broader research community.

Honorable Mention – Swarnadeep Seth, College of Sciences

Award for Outstanding Dissertation (Social Sciences, Humanities, Education, Business, Fine Arts, and Health Sciences) – Corey Seavey, College of Medicine

Corey Seavey is a graduate of the Biomedical Sciences doctoral program and mentored by Dr. Bradley Willenberg.

Seavey’s dissertation is titled: “New Tools and Platforms for Mosquito Behavior, Control, and Bite-Site Biology Investigations.”

Seavey’s research focused on using technology to create new methods of studying mosquito-borne diseases and ultimately mitigate their impact. Through his work, he developed two innovative tools to help deepen our understanding of mosquito behavior and enhance control strategies. The first tool is a unique flight chamber designed to study spatial repellents – specific airborne chemicals that form an invisible barrier, deterring mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases away from humans. The second tool is a model system called BITES that mimics a mosquito biting a human, which can be used to study the mosquito-bite site more closely and potentially better understand disease transmission. These new tools can lead to improved mosquito control strategies, thereby reducing mosquito-borne diseases worldwide.

Honorable Mention – Ratna Okhai, College of Community Innovation and Education

Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching – Debbie Hahs-Vaughn, College of Community Innovation and Education

Debbie Hahs-Vaughn is a professor and academic program coordinator in the Department of Learning Sciences and Educational Research. She teaches a subject known to be challenging for many people – quantitative statistics. “Statistics is an integral component of graduate education but at the same time is also difficult for many students to understand,” Hahs-Vaughn says. “On top of this, not everyone learns the same so it’s important to present material in multiple ways to reach students.”

Despite the demanding nature of her subject matter, she is regarded as an excellent instructor who makes herself available to students and offers highly constructive feedback. Her recognition with this award is a testament to her exceptional teaching abilities. Her passion for statistics, eagerness to teach her students, and supportive nature have allowed her students to succeed under her direction. “Being recognized through the Excellence Award for Graduate Teaching is an incredible honor and is incredibly motivating to continue to work on improving my instruction.”

Award for Faculty Excellence in Mentoring Postdoctoral Scholars – Mubarak Shah, College of Engineering and Computer Science

Mubarak Shah is a trustee chair professor of computer science and the founding director of the Center for Research in Computer Vision. The Pegasus professor has mentored more than twenty postdoctoral scholars during his tenure at UCF, many of whom have gone on to work for prominent universities, companies, and organizations such as Meta and Nvidia. Two co-founded startups and three are now successful faculty members at UCF.

“My philosophy always has been to mentor postdocs to achieve their goals of getting faculty jobs in highly ranked universities or jobs in top tech companies with strong R&D. I mentored them how to publish in a top-quality venue, and how to write successful proposals and how to guide research projects of graduate and undergraduate students,” Shah says. Watching his pupils find success is one of the most fulfilling aspects of his career.

Two exceptional faculty members are selected each year who show great dedication and guidance in the mentorship of doctoral students for the Award for Faculty Excellence in Mentoring Doctoral Students in the following disciplines: Health Sciences, Engineering, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, Education, Business and Fine Arts.

This year, the two faculty members recognized for their excellence in mentoring doctoral students are Ahmad Elshennawy and Robert Dvorak.

Award for Faculty Excellence in Mentoring Doctoral Students (Health Sciences, Engineering, Physical Sciences, and Life Sciences ) – Ahmad Elshennawy, College of Engineering and Computer Science

Ahmad Elshennawy is a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems and Director of the UCF Quality Institute. Elshennawy has over thirty years of experience as a researcher, academic, and consultant in the United States and abroad. His areas of teaching expertise include quality and reliability engineering, quality systems and management, six sigma quality, and statistical process control.

Award for Faculty Excellence in Mentoring Doctoral Students (Social Sciences, Humanities, Education, Business, and Fine Arts) – Robert Dvorak, College of Sciences

Robert Dvorak is a professor in the Clinical Psychology program and director of the REALE-TIME Lab. His work focuses on cognitive, affective, and behavioral self-regulation in health-compromising behaviors, such as substance use and eating pathology. In his lab, he works alongside his students to develop mobile and web-based interventions to reduce involvement in health-compromising behaviors.

Mentoring his students and seeing them grow into wonderful scholars and people is what drives him to continue his work. “I’ve found that the key to being a good mentor isn’t teaching, or guiding, or providing opportunities, or support,” says Dvorak. “Those are all important, but the most important thing, at least from my perspective, is helping these amazing people see in themselves what I see in them.”

RiteCare Center, communication disorders students receive financial awards from Scottish Rite Masons

Georgia Southern University’s RiteCare Center for Communication Disorders recently received a boost from the Scottish Rite Masons when the organization made an $11,500 donation to the center. The group also awarded two scholarships to graduate students in the Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSDS) program. 

Madison Morgan and Jessica Grim each received a $1,000 scholarship based on their outstanding academic and clinical abilities to put toward their tuition expenses.

“Receiving this scholarship meant so much to me,” Morgan said. “The Scottish Rite Masons do so much for the Rite Care Center, so to receive a scholarship from them was such an honor. It also showed me that my hard work has paid off and it encouraged me to keep working hard throughout this program.”

Morgan, who is from Brooklet, Georgia, received her undergraduate degree in special education from Georgia Southern while Tybee Island resident Grim earned an undergraduate degree in communication sciences and disorders. 

Grim was also grateful to be selected as a scholarship recipient. 

“Receiving this scholarship from the Scottish Rite meant the world to me,” she said. “I was incredibly grateful to be nominated for the scholarship by our clinical coordinator at the RiteCare Center (RCC). I am genuinely thankful to the RCC and the Scottish Rite Savannah chapter for what they do for our campus clinic and the ability to get hands-on experience immediately during my first semester of graduate school.”

The RiteCare Center for Communication Disorders at Georgia Southern is the primary RiteCare facility in the Savannah area and is supported by an annual contribution from the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Savannah Valley in keeping with the national philanthropic program of the Scottish Rite Masons to support speech and hearing clinics. 

The support of the Scottish Rite allows the Center to offer speech therapy services to the Savannah community. Additionally, services offered by the RiteCare Center for Communication Disorders are provided by graduate students in the CSDS program who are supervised by experienced licensed and certified speech-language pathologists.

Clinical Internship/Practicum Experience Update

Many of the clinical programs offered by the Waters College of Health Professions require a clinical internship or practicum experience to fulfill degree requirements.  Pursuant to the University's legal agreements, participants in clinical experiences are required to abide by the workplace rules of the clinical site. The University is aware of recent federal requirements that would mandate vaccination against COVID-19 for those working in certain settings, including health care. At this time, we expect that these new requirements may significantly impact our ability to locate a placement for students who remain unvaccinated. As always, WCHP will continue to make every effort to place students at clinical sites. However, please be aware that we may be unable to locate a site to accept unvaccinated students, which may cause a delay or inability to progress and complete the program of study.

Graduate student recognized by traffic safety organization

Norran Novat

KALAMAZOO, Mich.— Norran Novat , a Western Michigan University graduate student in civil and construction engineering, is one of just 19 students nationally to be named a 2024 Lifesavers Traffic Safety Scholar by the Lifesavers Conference on Roadway Safety.

“I am deeply honored, humbled and excited to receive this recognition as a recipient of the 2024 Lifesavers Conference Traffic Safety Scholars Program scholarship,” says Novat. “This acknowledgment reaffirms my dedication to promoting road safety and underscores the significance of my ongoing thesis work.”

The 19 students received scholarships to attend the Lifesavers Conference on Roadway Safety, which was held April 7-9. All are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in civil and construction engineering and were selected through a competitive application process.

“I believe I was selected for the 2024 Lifesavers Conference Traffic Safety Scholars Program scholarship based on my demonstrated interest, commitment and passion for enhancing safety for vulnerable road users which aligns closely with the objectives of the Lifesavers Conference,” says Novat.

As part of the application process, Novat shared his research on pedestrian safety at roundabouts, which is part his thesis work at Western.

That thesis, titled “Evaluation of Pedestrian Safety at Roundabouts: Examining the Effects of Channelized Right Turns,” involves a study that assesses pedestrian safety at roundabouts in Michigan, focusing on the impact of channelized right turns. A channelized right turn such as those in roundabouts are designed to nearly free-flow, right-turn . Novat’s research aims to explore how these configurations influence pedestrian safety within roundabout environments.

The Lifesavers Conference showcases the latest research, evidence-based strategies, proven countermeasures, and promising new approaches for addressing the nation’s most pressing traffic safety problems. During the conference, Novat will learn about career opportunities from a panel of young traffic safety professionals working in the public and private sectors and meet with state and national traffic safety leaders.

This is the ninth year of the Traffic Safety Scholars program, which provides college students the opportunity to attend the Lifesavers Conference, the largest gathering of traffic safety professionals in the U.S. The program’s goals are to showcase the diversity of opportunities in traffic safety and encourage students, regardless of discipline, to pursue a career in a dynamic field that draws from a variety of disciplines from engineering, education and enforcement to communications, business, marketing, medicine, public health, political science, counseling and more.

The 2024 Lifesavers Conference presents three plenary sessions and over 80 workshops featuring leading experts in the fields of distracted and impaired driving; child passenger, pedestrian, bicycle, motorcycle, teen, and aging driver safety; occupant protection; vehicle technology; law enforcement and criminal justice; public health, commercial motor vehicles; roadway design; and more.

Griffith Graduate Research School

The Commonwealth Government’s Research Training Program (RTP) provides funding to universities to support the research training of both domestic and international higher degree research (HDR) candidates. The funding provided through the RTP offers the provision for universities to administer and award a number of stipend scholarships known as Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships. These awards are governed by the Commonwealth Scholarship Guidelines (Research) 2017 .

Griffith University awards RTP Stipends via a competitive application process to candidates commencing or enrolled in a HDR program. RTP Stipends are provided to assist with candidates’ general living costs and do not cover program tuition fees. This website sets out the allowances and conditions attached to the RTP Stipend award.

Conditions of Award 2024

(1) To be eligible for an Australian Government RTP Stipend Scholarship, an applicant must:

• be commencing or enrolled in a HDR program (for which RTP support is available) at Griffith University.
• not be receiving income from another source to support the candidate’s general living costs that provides a benefit greater than 75% of the GUPRS stipend rate to undertake the proposed program. Income unrelated to the candidate’s HDR program, or income received for the candidate’s HDR program but not for the purposes of supporting general living costs, is not to be taken into account.

(2) To be considered for an Australian Government RTP Stipend Scholarship, an applicant must:

• hold a Bachelor Degree (AQF 8) with First Class Honours (Class I) or be regarded by Griffith University as having an equivalent level of attainment, as specified on the Equivalent qualifications for HDR program admission webpage.
• have not completed a degree at the same or higher level as the HDR program to which the applicant is commencing or enrolled in.
• if seeking recognition for prior candidature in the HDR program, have not completed more than 12 months (equivalent full-time) of candidature at Griffith University or another Australian or overseas institution.
• have not previously held the same or an equivalent scholarship for which they are applying unless it was terminated within six months of the scholarship’s payments commencing; it was held for a degree at a lower level to which the applicant is applying; or the applicant is applying to transfer the scholarship (refer to Section 3.6 of the HDR Scholarship Procedure ).
• have not held a Commonwealth Government Australia Award scholarship in the two years prior to the point of commencing the award, unless approval for this course of action has been granted by the appropriate branch of the Commonwealth Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Applications for research scholarships as part of the Continuous Scholarship Round at Griffith University are firstly processed within the Griffith Graduate Research School. It is at this point that applications are initially reviewed for eligibility for entry into Griffith research programs.

Following this initial review, applications are then forwarded to the appropriate schools, departments or research centres for academic staff to assess applications for both entry into Griffith research programs, and for consideration for a scholarship. All applications are then assessed by the Dean (Research) of the relevant Group and the Dean, Griffith Graduate Research School, to arrive at an outcome against the eligibility and selection criteria.

Applications that meet the criteria for scholarship consideration are then assessed and ranked in an order of merit, as outlined in Section 3.2.7 of the  Higher Degree by Research Scholarship Procedure and takes into consideration:

• Academic merit, with emphasis on the results attained in the qualification with the substantial research component but also taking into account the grades of any other eligible qualification, or evidenced equivalence of research excellence capability as applicable
• The international standing of the institution at which the qualification with the substantial research component was completed
• the quality of the eligible research outputs included as evidence in an application, as well as the applicant's contribution to these outputs
• the level and duration of sustained research experience and evidence of how the research activity undertaken bears upon and enhances the applicant's research capacity, with regard to the proposed research
• The compatibility/fit between the applicant, research environment, and the supervision team.
• The compatibility/fit of the proposed research with university/academic group research priorities

The University's HDR Scholarship Committee considers applicants and awards scholarships based on the University-wide Order of Merit List.

3.1 Stipend

(1) A full-time RTP Stipend Scholarship carries an annual stipend of $33,480 (2024 rate). The stipend rate for any particular year may be the same as that for the preceding year, indexed annually.

(2) Income derived by way of a Scholarship by a candidate receiving full-time education at a University may be tax exempt. It is the responsibility of the scholarship holder to assess the tax liability of their scholarship.

(3) The stipend will be paid into an account in a bank, building society or credit union, on a fortnightly basis, as per the University’s payment schedule. Payment will be calculated from the date of commencement of study, except where an awardee is already enrolled in the program, in which case payment may commence from the date of advice of the grant of the award (or from 1 January for offers made in November of the preceding year).

3.2 Relocation allowance

(1) An awardee who is required to relocate, either within Australia or from overseas, specifically to undertake the program and take up the award is entitled to receive a maximum of $515 for each eligible adult and $255 for each eligible child to an absolute maximum of $1,485 for the following on provision of receipts to the GGRS, verifying the costs of this travel:

• travel expenses equivalent to the economy/student airfare for the candidate, spouse and dependents to Brisbane or the Gold Coast via the most direct route. Where a candidate elects to travel by car, a per kilometre allowance up to the equivalent airfare for the candidate will be calculated. Candidates cannot claim for accommodation or meal costs if they elect to travel by car; and
• removal expenses.

(2) Any relocation allowance must be claimed within 6 months of commencement of the award. Relocation allowances are not payable for travel undertaken after the completion of studies, or termination of the award.

3.3 Leave entitlements

(1) The table below describes the leave that awardees are entitled to within the tenure of the award.

(2) International candidates seeking leave will need to meet the conditions of their visa to be entitled to the leave provisions described below and are advised to check with Griffith International.

(3) Leave is not permitted within the first 6 months of candidature, unless in exceptional circumstances. Such applications will require approval of the Dean, Research.

(4) Parental leave: up to a maximum of 12 weeks paid parental leave, where the candidate is the primary carer of a new-born child or of a newly adopted child under 16 years of age, upon the provision of appropriate certification. Parental leave will not be approved within the first 12 months of award commencement. Candidates requiring paid parental leave within the first 12 months of award commencement are encouraged to contact the GGRS Scholarships team for advice.

Candidates enrolled on a part-time basis will be entitled to paid leave calculated on a pro rata basis. The paid parental leave is normally only available to the candidate (birth parent / non-birth parent / adoptive parent) who is taking on the primary care giver role within the first twelve months of the child coming into their care. Parental leave for pregnant candidates would normally commence no later than 3 weeks prior to the expected birth date unless medical evidence is provided to certify that the pregnant candidate is fit to continue normal study for a further period that extends to no later than the expected birth date.

4.1 Commencement of study

(1) Awardees must accept both a place in the HDR program (if not already commenced) as well as the RTP Stipend Scholarship by the date specified in the offer letter. The RTP Stipend Scholarship must be taken up between the dates specified in the letter of offer. Where exceptional circumstances prevent an awardee from taking up the award by the date specified in the offer letter, they may apply for a delayed commencement. Full details of the reasons for the request will be required. If an awardee cannot commence by the approved date the University may withdraw the award.

4.2 Mode of attendance – Remote candidature

(1) Awardees are required to maintain an on-campus enrolment.

(2) In exceptional circumstances, an application to undertake the award predominantly away from the University may be considered for domestic candidates where they have a high likelihood of success as evidenced by qualifications and research experience. Requirements are detailed in Section 3.8 of the HDR Scholarship Procedure and section 3.3 of the HDR Admission Procedure.

(3) International candidates must maintain an on-campus enrolment.

4.3 Study load

(1) Awardees are required to maintain a full-time study load, unless approval for part-time study load and award is approved.

(2) A full-time study load commitment is at least the equivalent of the standard five day working week (e.g. 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, 48 weeks per year). The actual pattern of research and study is to be negotiated by the candidate and their supervisory team. Refer to Section 3.5.4 of the HDR Enrolment and Variations to Candidature Procedure .

4.4 Employment and other funding

(1) Awardees are permitted to undertake work, paid or otherwise, that is unrelated to their research project. However, it must not affect their ability to maintain their study load commitment, nor interfere with the timely progression and completion of their research project. Employment commitments will not be considered as a reason for an extension of the award. Requirements are detailed in Section 3.5.4 of the HDR Enrolment and Variations to Candidature Procedure .

(2) Awardees should consult with their principal supervisor in regards to the decision to undertake employment while in the HDR program.

(3) Awardees are permitted to:

• obtain funds for fieldwork, equipment or other expenses not covered by the award; and
• obtain funding for overseas travel costs from other Australian Government awards or other funding sources.

(4) Holders of a RTP Stipend Scholarship with dependent children may be eligible for the Family Payment paid by Centrelink. Enquires must be directed to Centrelink.

4.5 Part-time award

(1) Applications to undertake the award on a part-time basis may be considered where the applicant has significant caring responsibilities or a medical condition or disability limiting their capacity to undertake full-time enrolment. Part-time awards will not be considered based on employment limiting capacity to undertake full-time enrolment. Requirements are detailed in Section 3.7 of the HDR Scholarship Procedure .

(2) The award will be 50% of the full-time stipend rate, part-time scholarships are not tax exempt.

(3) The award duration will be calculated on a pro-rata basis based on periods of full-time/part-time enrolment.

(4) Holders of a part-time award may convert to full-time enrolment and scholarship award at any stage, subject to seeking approval for full-time enrolment. The University may also require part-time scholarship recipients to convert to full-time if the reasons for which the part-time award was granted no longer apply.

(1) The tenure of a full-time RTP Stipend Scholarship is, from date of program commencement, up to two years (full-time equivalent) for a Masters (Research) candidate and up to three years (full-time equivalent) for a Doctoral candidate.

(2) Continuation of receipt of the RTP Stipend Scholarship during the tenure of the award is dependent upon evidence of the awardee’s satisfactory progress in the HDR program, through the timely completion of candidature milestones and satisfactory progress reports.

(3) The tenure of a RTP Stipend Scholarship will be reduced by any period of study undertaken:

• towards the research project and/or degree prior to the commencement of the RTP Stipend Scholarship; or
• towards the degree during suspension of the RTP Stipend Scholarship.

(4) A Doctoral candidate making satisfactory progress may apply for an extension to the RTP Stipend Scholarship tenure for up to a maximum of six months. An extension will only be approved where the grounds for the extension:

• relate to the study and are beyond the control of the candidate, and could not have been reasonably anticipated at the commencement of the program; or
• are on the basis of the candidate undertaking an industry placement, research internship or professional practice activity of more than 30 days duration, approved by the Dean Research as part of the HDR program, as per Section 4.8 of these Conditions of Award.

A request for an extension should be made within a reasonable period before (and at least one month) before the expiry date of the award. Awardees enrolled in a Masters (Research) program are not entitled to an extension of award.

4.7 Change to HDR program

(1) Applications to transfer candidature from one HDR program to another will be in accordance with Section 3.6.7 of the HDR Enrolment and Variations to Candidature Procedure . If an awardee is permitted to transfer from a Masters (Research) to a Doctoral program or from a Doctoral to a Masters (Research) program, the maximum duration of the award will be adjusted accordingly.

(2) The maximum tenure of a transferred award becomes that for the new HDR program minus the period of study undertaken towards the previous program prior to the conversion.

(3) A request for a major change to the thesis topic can be considered as per Section 3.6.4 of the HDR Enrolment and Variations to Candidature Procedure . If it is established through this approval process that the recorded field of research (FoR) and/or field of education (FoE) for the thesis topic have changed, the Griffith Graduate Research School will update these fields in the candidate’s record.

4.8 Industry placements, research internships and professional practice activities

(1) Recipients of a RTP Stipend Scholarship may undertake industry placements, research internships and professional practice activities that are approved by the Dean Research as part of their eligible HDR program.

(2) Ongoing receipt of a RTP Stipend Scholarship at the rate set out in Section 3.1 of these Conditions of Award may be available for the duration of an approved industry placement, research internship or professional practice activity if:

• The RTP Stipend Scholarship awardee has not exceeded the maximum duration of their HDR program;
• The awardee has sufficient RTP Stipend Scholarship tenure remaining;
• The awardee has not submitted their thesis for examination; and
• The industry placement, research internship or professional practice activity will run for at least 30 days and no more than six months duration.

(3) The undertaking of an approved industry placement, research internship or professional practice activity does not constitute grounds for extension to the RTP Stipend Scholarship tenure beyond the provision for extension set out in Section 4.6 (4) of these Conditions of Award.

(1) Where necessary, awardees will abide by the National Health and Medical Research Council codes on animal and human experimentation, Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research and National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research , and the University's safety practices.

4.10 Repayment of scholarship

(1) An awardee is required to repay any scholarship payment if:

• the payment is made in error or overpaid (as determined by the University);
• the awardee is no longer enrolled in the period the scholarship is paid;
• the awardee does not meet the conditions of the scholarship; or
• the awardee has provided false information; or
• the awardee has been made a scholarship offer in error.

4.11 Termination of award

(1) A RTP Stipend Scholarship will be terminated in any of the following circumstances:

• at the end of the period of tenure provided for by the award or when the awardee lodges a thesis for examination, whichever is earlier;
• if the University is satisfied that the program of study is not being carried out with competence and diligence or in accordance with the offer of award, and no suitable arrangements can be made for continuation of the degree;
• when the candidate ceases full-time enrolment when approval has not been obtained to hold the RTP Stipend Scholarship on a part-time basis;
• if the awardee commences a period of leave without formal approval, or fails to maintain an on campus enrolment without the approval for remote candidature status;
• if the award holder does not resume study at the conclusion of a period of leave, or does not make arrangements to extend that period of leave;
• if the candidate ceases to meet the eligibility criteria specified in Section 1 of these Conditions of Award, other than during a period in which leave has been approved;
• if the University determines that a candidate is guilty of serious academic or student misconduct in accordance with the Academic Misconduct Policy – Higher Degree Research Candidates and the Student Academic Misconduct Policy ; and/or
• if the candidate fails to maintain satisfactory progress, as determined by the University in accordance with Section 3.9 of the HDR Academic Progress Procedure .

(2) If an award is terminated, it cannot be reactivated unless the termination occurred in error.

4.12 Transfer of Award between Institutions

(1) Awardees may request the transfer of their RTP Stipend Scholarship between Higher Education Providers. Awardees who transfer to another institution may continue to receive their RTP Stipend only if their new institution agrees to its continuation and subject to the new institution having sufficient RTP funding available. Transfers to Griffith University are managed in accordance with the scholarship selection process set out in Section 3.6 of the HDR Scholarship Procedure .

4.13 Acknowledgement Requirement

(1) The Commonwealth Government’s support via the provision of the Australian Government RTP Stipend Scholarship must be acknowledged when, at any time during or after completion of the HDR program, the awardee, their supervisor or any other party, publishes or produces scholarly material and/or artistic works which relate to the research project carried out by the awardee. This acknowledgement must take the form of a statement included in the published material mentioning the support received through an ‘Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship’.

(1) A decision by the University made in respect of an application for scholarship is final and not reviewable, as per the University’s Student Review and Appeals Policy.

(2) A candidate who is dissatisfied with a decision to terminate the scholarship may request a review of the decision in accordance with the Student Review and Appeals Policy .

Griffith Earns AACSB Influential Leader Recognition

Jennifer Griffith, an associate professor of organizational behavior and management and the Morrison Fellow of Diversity, was recently recognized by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International as a 2024 Influential Leader.  

Griffith is among 22 business school faculty honored by AACSB International — the world’s largest business education alliance — as the 2024 Class of Influential Leaders. The annual initiative recognizes notable alumni and faculty from AACSB-accredited business schools whose work inspires positive change in the business world and society.  

“Jenn Griffith’s record of research and related practical interventions for improving workplace equity made her an obvious choice to nominate for this recognition. She also regularly involves undergraduate students in her research efforts, inspiring the next generation of scholars and changemakers,” said Victoria Parker, Paul College associate dean for graduate education and faculty administration, who nominated Griffith for the honor.  

Griffith’s research focuses on increasing equity in the workplace. Most recently, her studies have centered on workplace policy and institutional interventions, both pre-and post-hire, to prevent and remedy the social and individual costs of identity-based bias and sexual misconduct. This work includes research and applied projects related to the prevention of sexual harassment and assault and research on diversity, equity, and inclusion, mainly focused on interventions to address and reduce bias in organizational decisions.  

“It’s a privilege to be recognized in the 2024 AACSB cohort of Influential Leaders, and it’s especially gratifying that this recognition stems from my efforts in promoting workplace equity,” Griffith said. “My goal in doing this work is to uncover the resources and tools needed to create more inclusive and innovative workplaces where everyone can thrive. The organizational decisions made every day, from the metrics and methods of how we assess job applicants to the workplace cultures and expectations we reinforce, play a part in ensuring that everyone has a fair opportunity to flourish.”
