The Department of Psychology offers four-year programs of study leading to a BA or BSc (Honours) Psychology, a BA or BSc with Major Psychology, and a three-year BA Pass degree program. Programs are designed to provide students with a broad introduction to the field of psychology including research methodology, psychological theory and application. In addition, the 20-credit degree programs give students the opportunity to prepare for admission to professional and advanced degree training in a variety of fields. Students interested in pursuing graduate study specifically in psychology should complete the Honours program.

Students wishing to major in Psychology must apply to declare their major. Declare or Change Major forms are available in the Registrar’s Office and online at  brocku.ca/registrar/forms . The Department believes that a broadly-based liberal arts and science background is appropriate in conjunction with a major in Psychology. It is required that Honours students acquire some background in other disciplines as part of their undergraduate program by taking elective courses in areas outside of Psychology. Students wishing to pursue an Honours (Research) degree must complete a  PSYC 4F91    Application. Applications are available in the Department of Psychology. Students wishing to pursue an Honours (Comprehensive) degree must complete a University Application for Year 4 Studies form (available on the Registrar’s Office website).

Students wishing to take  PSYC 3F40    and  PSYC 3P39    require a minimum 77 percent major average. Students wishing to take  PSYC 4F91   ,  PSYC 4P93    and  PSYC 4P95    require a minimum 80 percent major average and permission from the Department. Students wishing to take PSYC 4P08    require a minimum 70 percent major average.

The requirements for graduation with a BA or BSc (Honours) are a minimum 70 percent major average and a minimum 60 percent non-major average. The requirements for a BA or BSc with Major and a Pass BA are a minimum 60 percent major average and a minimum 60 percent overall average.

Program Notes

  • Prior to graduation, students completing a four-year degree (Honours, BA with Major or BSc with Major) must choose 8.0 credits from disciplines outside of Psychology. As well, students completing a Pass BA must choose 5.0 credits from disciplines outside of Psychology. 
  • Students wishing to take  PSYC 3F40    and  PSYC 3P39    require a minimum 77 percent major average. Students wishing to take  PSYC 4F91   ,  PSYC 4F97   ,  PSYC 4P93    and  PSYC 4P95    require a minimum 80 percent major average and permission of the department. 
  • Students enrolled in  PSYC 4F91    must enrol concurrently in  PSYC 4P93   .  PSYC 4P95    is strongly recommended for students registered in  PSYC 4F91   . 
  • If a student has completed  PSYC 3F40    and wishes to complete an Honours Comprehensive stream, BA with Major program, or BSc with Major program,  PSYC 3P30    will not be required. 
  • Students completing the Honours Comprehensive stream program must take a minimum one-half credit from each of the Applied Psychology, Social Processes, and Brain and Cognition categories. 
  • Students enrolled in Co-op programs (BA, BSc, honours and with major) who  complete PSYC 0N90 can choose to take PSYC 2P01 or one-half elective credit.
  • In 20 credit Honours degree programs a maximum of eight credits may be numbered 1 (alpha) 00 to 1 (alpha) 99; at least three credits must be numbered 2 (alpha) 90 or above; at least three credits must be numbered 3 (alpha) 90 or above; and the remaining credits must be numbered 2 (alpha) 00 or above. In the 20 credit BA with Major degree and BSc with Major degree program a maximum of eight credits may be numbered 1 (alpha) 00 to 1 (alpha) 99; at least four and one-half credits must be numbered 2 (alpha) 90 or above; at least one and one-half credits must be numbered 3 (alpha) 90 or above; and the remaining credits must be numbered 2 (alpha) 00 or above.

Graduate (MA, PhD) Program

The graduate programs allow for study and directed research with a concentration in behavioural neuroscience, life span development, or social/personality. For further information, including faculty interests, see the current graduate calendar or the Psychology Department website.

The Master of Arts in Physical Education and Single Subject Teaching Credential program equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to teach physical education and coach at the K-12, junior college, and four-year university levels.

Admission Requirements—Domestic Applicants

The  university graduate  and program admission requirements below must be met before an application is considered complete.

  • Graduate application for admission
  • $45 nonrefundable application fee
  • Official transcripts from all institutions leading to and awarding the applicant’s bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and all postbaccalaureate study An official transcript is one that Azusa Pacific University receives unopened in an envelope sealed by the former institution and that bears the official seal of the college or university. A cumulative minimum 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) grade-point average on the posted degree is required for regular admission status. Provisional admittance may be granted to individuals with a lower GPA if competency can be shown through multiple measures.
  • Two recommendations that assess competence and character. Appropriate recommendations include those who have supervised the applicant’s leadership or teaching experience with children/youth in public or private settings, an employer who directly supervised the applicant, or one faculty/academic reference. References from neighbors, friends, and relatives are not appropriate, unless they have served as supervisors. Additional letters are optional.
  • Résumé (preferred) or statement of experience including the most relevant work and volunteer experience
  • One- to two-page personal statement addressing the following topics: experiences from the applicant’s background that may enhance the teaching experience; the most rewarding and challenging aspects of working with youth; why the applicant wants to teach; preferred grade level and content areas and why; and how the applicant envisions supporting the success of all students and contributing to the profession. Written communication skills will be assessed along with content.
  • Proof of Certificate of Clearance (COC). Applicants for Summer or Fall Terms must have a COC valid through January 31. Applicants for the Spring Term must have a COC valid through June 30. Applicants are encouraged to begin this step as soon as possible to allow time for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing to process your information.
  • Proof the Basic Skills Requirement has been satisfied
  • Proof of subject matter preparation or proof of paid registration for the next appropriate California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) administration (view  teacher test preparation resources )

What to expect.

After all admission materials have been received by the  Student Services Center , the faculty or department chair reviews the applicant’s file. The applicant is notified in writing of the admission decision.

Admission Requirements—International Applicants

Azusa Pacific University is authorized under federal law by the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services and the U.S. Department of State to enroll nonimmigrant, alien undergraduate and graduate students. APU issues and administers both the I-20 and DS 2019 (F-1 and J-1 status documents respectively).

To apply for a graduate program at APU, the following requirements must be fulfilled in addition to meeting the domestic applicant and  program-specific admission requirements  specified above.

International applicants must also:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in English through a placement test with the  Academic Success Center , or through a TOEFL/IELTS score that meets program-specific requirements. Refer to APU’s  English proficiency requirements  to learn more. Request that official test scores be sent to APU. All other forms of proof indicated in the English proficiency requirements must be submitted directly to International Services.
  • Provide a  Graduate Affidavit of Financial Support (PDF)  and a bank statement from within the last six months proving financial ability to pay for education costs through personal, family, or sponsor resources.
  • Submit a copy of a valid passport showing biographical data, including your name, country of citizenship, date of birth, and other legal information.
  • Get foreign transcripts evaluated. International credentials (transcripts, certificates, diplomas, and degrees) must be evaluated by a foreign transcript evaluation agency. View our policy and a list of approved  Foreign Transcript Evaluation Agencies .

Physical Education Scholarships

This scholarship is in honor of Kyle Ian MacDonald, MS ’15, a graduate of APU’s   MS in Physical Education program . The intent of this scholarship is to financially support students in the pursuit of teaching and mentoring students through coaching, physical education, exercise science, and sport management. Awards range from $2,500-$2,800. To apply, fill out the   Kyle Ian MacDonald Memorial Scholarship Application (PDF)   by August 1 and email the completed form to   [email protected] .

Physical Education MOU Partner Discounts

Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) are agreements between Azusa Pacific University and various entities (such as cities, counties, and businesses) that allow for employees of those entities, their spouses, and their children (up to age 26) to receive a tuition discount for select Azusa Pacific programs. MOUs are a great way for employers to promote the professional development and advancement of their employees.

The   School of Education   and the   School of Behavioral Sciences   offer a 10 percent tuition discount for eligible employees of the following districts, counties, and charter schools who will start in a   graduate education program   through the School of Education or a   graduate physical education program   through the School of Behavioral Sciences.

Please note:   The School of Education’s doctoral program (Ed.D. in Educational Leadership) is not eligible for any MOU discount. The discount cannot be combined with other institutional aid.

School of Behavioral Sciences Alumni Tuition Discounts

APU’s   School of Behavioral Sciences   offers an alumni tuition discount for APU alumni starting in the following graduate programs:

Students must be in good academic standing and maintain satisfactory academic progress with a minimum cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0. Students must be enrolled at least half-time. If qualifications are met, the discount may be renewed each term. APU will pay $500 per term (up to $2,000 over the course of the program). Note: Award and eligibility are applicable for the 2022-23 academic year and apply to students admitted beginning fall 2020. The discount is subject to change.

About This Track

The Exposure Sciences and Environmental Epidemiology (ESEE) track offers research and training opportunities in key topic areas relevant to environmental and occupational health. These include air, water, the food system, exposures across the life course, metals and synthetic chemicals, environmental microbiology, the built environment, global environmental health, molecular and integrated epidemiology, and the investigation of susceptibility factors and effective interventions. Graduates from the ESEE track work in academic research institutions, health agencies, health departments, public health advocacy organizations, and private industry organizations that are leaders in environmental and occupational health in the United States and around the world.

While the exact course sequence for each student is customized on an individual basis dependent on their background and research interests, coursework generally centers around one of several topic areas as illustrated below. This coursework is designed to achieve in depth and experiential training to complement the core instruction.

Exposure Sciences: Evaluating and preventing or minimizing exposure from airborne, waterborne or foodborne physical, chemical or biological pollutants, and promoting health and safety in occupational and non-occupational environments are major strategies to protect public health. Using principles of chemistry, biology, physics, engineering, epidemiology, risk assessment and mathematics, we develop innovative solutions to environmental contamination problems. We develop techniques to measure contaminants in various media, develop strategies and conduct studies to assess the levels of exposures in populations, evaluate the impact of a hazard, offer solutions on treatment or containment, promote regulations and policies to prevent human or environmental contamination, and perform quality control checks.

Environmental Epidemiology: Understanding the role of the environment in human health is critical to improve health and quality of life in human populations, especially among vulnerable and marginalized groups. Using an epidemiologic approach, we conduct population-based research that incorporates state-of-the art exposure and outcome assessment to evaluate the role of the environment in disease, disability, and other health outcomes and to develop strategies for health promotion and disease prevention and control. We engage with diverse populations nationally and internationally, employ classic and cutting-edge epidemiologic methods, and investigate a broad range of environmental exposures including the natural and built-environment.

Occupational Health: Protecting workers from disease and injury is vital nationally and internationally and is an important component of environmental health. We address work-related health problems and design solutions to control and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, psychosocial, and biological threats. Our goal is to promote and maintain the health of worker populations, particularly those who are most vulnerable, to ensure healthy and productive working lives. Our research includes occupational exposure assessment, industrial hygiene, occupational nursing, development and validation of sensors and biomarkers, epidemiology, population health management, health promotion, policy analysis, and intervention studies focused on disease prevention.

Tuition and Funding

Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the JHU PhD Union, the minimum guaranteed 2025-2026 academic year stipend is $50,000 for all PhD students with a 4% increase the following year. Tuition, fees, and medical benefits are provided, including health insurance premiums for PhD student’s children and spouses of international students, depending on visa type. The minimum stipend and tuition coverage is guaranteed for at least the first four years of a BSPH PhD program; specific amounts and the number of years supported, as well as work expectations related to that stipend will vary across departments and funding source. Please refer to the  CBA to review specific benefits, compensation, and other terms.

Need-Based Relocation Grants Students who  are admitted to PhD programs at JHU starting in Fall 2023 or beyond can apply to receive a need-based grant to offset the costs of relocating to be able to attend JHU.   These grants provide funding to a portion of incoming students who, without this money, may otherwise not be able to afford to relocate to JHU for their PhD program. This is not a merit-based grant. International Doctoral Student Award (IDSA)

An IDSA will be provided automatically to eligible international students registered full time in a doctoral program at the University of Waterloo. Students must meet the academic progress requirements of their program, not have outstanding probationary admission requirements, and not be concurrently receiving tuition awards (e.g., PSI or Lazaridis Tuition Awards) or funding which exceeds the  minimum PhD funding  value from any government/industry sponsorship (except in the cases where an explicit MOU (or MOA) exists that specifies IDSA inclusion (e.g., Conacyt), or self-funding.

International Master’s Award of Excellence (IMAE)

Effective May 1, 2019 (spring 2019 admissions cycle), the International Master’s Award of Excellence (IMAE) will be awarded to eligible international master’s students normally entering a research-based graduate program at the University of Waterloo. The award will be valued at $2,500 per term for a maximum of five terms. Faculties will nominate eligible students based on their award allocation and select recipients based on academic excellence as demonstrated through their application for admission to the graduate program and other criteria as identified by the Faculties.

Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS)

The OGS program is funded by the provincial government to encourage excellence in graduate studies at the  master’s  and  doctoral  levels. It is a merit-based scholarship and awards are available to students in all disciplines of academic study. A small number of these awards are available to international students. Interested students can refer to our  OGS web page  for eligibility criteria and Waterloo’s internal application process.

Trudeau Foundation Scholarships

The Trudeau Scholars Program grants up to fifteen new scholarships every year to outstanding doctoral candidates in the social sciences and humanities. The Foundation supports doctoral candidates pursuing research of compelling present-day concern, touching upon one or more of the four themes of the Foundation: human rights and dignity, responsible citizenship, Canada in the world, and people and their natural environment. Trudeau Scholars are actively engaged in their fields, in which they are expected to become leading national and international figures.

Trudeau Scholars are selected through a process that involves nomination by a university, an application supported by references and transcripts, internal and external review and selection panels, an interview, and the formal approval of the Board of Directors.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS)

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) program was created to attract and retain world-class  doctoral  students and to establish Canada as a global center of excellence in research and higher learning. Vanier Scholars demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health-related fields. Canadian and international students are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier Scholarship, which is valued at  $50,000 per year for up to three years . 

The scholarships are administered by Canada's three federal granting agencies: the  Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) , the  Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)  and the  Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) .

Students wishing to apply for a Vanier CGS must do so through the Canadian university to which they are applying for doctoral studies. In an effort to support students in broadening their research horizons and seeking new challenges, the Vanier CGS program strongly encourages candidates to pursue their studies beyond the university that granted their undergraduate and graduate degrees. Based on university-assigned allocations, universities forward a limited number of nominations to the appropriate federal research granting agency (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC) annually.

If a student is successful in the Vanier CGS competition, they  must  hold their award at the university that nominated them. The Vanier CGS cannot be taken to another university as it is not transferrable.
